According to the traditional Butchulla custodians, the Fraser Coast has always been of such exceptional beauty that a spirit called K’Gari begged to remain there forever. Unable to do so in her spirit form, the gods turned her into Fraser Island. In the Butchulla language, the island is still called K’Gari. Its World Heritage listing is well deserved, with long beaches, 100+ freshwater lakes, lush rainforests and pure dingo populations. The island is a fantastic add-on to any conference or incentive, and Kingfisher Bay Resort is the perfect onisland venue.

Ever since James Moffat built a beach shack 130 years ago on the headland that now bears his name, this stretch of Pacific Ocean has been a favourite with groups seeking a relaxing beachside destination. Long curves of sand, headland cliffs, historic sites, nature reserves and picturesque esplanades make this a laid-back conference choice with options for beach games, water sports and group activities on your doorstep. And there is something cherished and respected as “restful” in the modern, clean and safe towns and villages that line this part of the Sunshine Coast. Less than one hour’s drive from Brisbane, just getting here is calming.

The beachside towns of Marcoola and Twin Waters feature modern conference venues in peaceful surroundings, while Maroochydore boasts funky cafés, multicultural cuisine and a thriving live music scene adjacent to waterfront apartments. This precinct’s vitality reflects the energy being injected into Australia’s newest CBD, which is also being built in Maroochydore. Mooloolaba, three kilometres to the south, features chic beachside venues, galleries, day spas, alfresco eateries, water activities and attractions. All these things combine to make this area an outstanding choice for groups looking for a stylish beach and business blend.

Mooloolaba to Coolum Beach

Cosmopolitan resort villages, enveloped in national a park that faces virgin beaches, line the ocean-side road between Coolum Beach and Noosa. Some offer almost reclusive solitude while others brim with bars, beach-facing eateries and boutiques. With a hinterland as rich as the surrounding oceans, the area reflects its UNESCO Biosphere label and is the gateway to the World Heritage-listed Fraser Island. INDUSTRY STRENGTHS

Aviation & aerospace The Sunshine Coast has evolved into one of Australia’s leading aerospace hubs, boasting many diverse and globally-focused companies which specialise in manufacturing, project management, charter services, mechanical design, emergency services, airline crew training and maintenance. This has fuelled a global reputation and attracted national and international businesses such as Aeromil Pacific and Machjet International. This breadth of local expertise makes the Sunshine Coast a natural choice for aviation, airline and aerospace-related conferences. This is being cemented with a major expansion of the Sunshine Coast Airport to be completed by 2020. The expansion will benefit event organisers with many more direct flights from additional Australian locations, plus from across Asia and the Western Pacific. With the destination’s popularity continuing to soar and the region preparing for more visitors, it is no wonder that the Sunshine Coast Airport is officially Australia’s fastest growing airport.

INDUSTRY STRENGTHS

Clean technologies The Sunshine Coast has become the natural choice for businesses that provide innovative products and services that measure, reduce or rectify negative environmental impacts. World-leading Sunshine Coast green technology companies provide environmental management services, sustainable building design, renewable energy, energy efficient manufacturing, LED lighting innovation, and water management. On the back of this innovation, the Sunshine Coast Council has built a 24-hectare solar farm – a first for an Australian local government organisation. Completed in early 2017, the farm generates sufficient power to offset all of Sunshine Coast Council’s electricity demand - that’s enough to power 15,000 homes for a year. This is already helping attract business people with one eye on their wallet and the other on the environment. One such cleantech business is Nano-Nouvelle, which is developing unmatched nanotechnology to boost lithium ion battery storage capacity by up to 50 percent.

Spotlight on:

Maroochydore – The Bright City The Sunshine Coast has twice been named as one of the world’s Smart21 Communities by a global industry group, and this impressive reputation will be further bolstered as the biggest smart city project in Australia progresses.

The Sunshine Coast’s healthy lifestyle was given a shot in the arm in 2017 with the opening of the new $1.8 billion 450-bed Sunshine Coast University Hospital – a hospital that enjoys co-location with the Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital, operated by Ramsay Health Care, and Best Western Plus Lake Kawana Hotel, a full-service corporate hotel.

The Maroochydore City Centre project is the nation’s only greenfield Central Business District development within an existing urban area, representing a unique opportunity to establish a new city heart in one of Australia’s fastest growing regions. The development will unfold over the next 15-20 years, showcasing excellence in urban design and innovation with smart technology embedded throughout the 53-hectare site.

These facilities are part of Australia’s largest project in healthcare infrastructure. More than $5 billion is committed to the construction of the hospitals, hotel, plus the USC Skills, Academic and Research Centre (SARC) and other health facilities within a 100-hectare greenfield health destination known as Oceanside Kawana Health Precinct.

Located just 10 minutes from the Sunshine Coast Airport and five minutes from world-class beaches, the new Maroochydore City Centre will include commercial offices, retail and dining precincts, inner-city apartments, parks, plazas, stunning new waterways, a premium hotel and entertainment, convention and exhibition facilities.

With stress proven to be a health concern, the Sunshine Coast Council is also playing a part in making life restful and comfortable. Plans for a light rail system will see residents and visitors quickly and efficiently transported along the coastal strip between Maroochydore and Caloundra. The first stage, to connect the Maroochydore City Centre with the Oceanside Kawana Health Precinct, is planned for completion by 2025.

Why Sunshine Coast? The Sunshine Coast’s villages and towns are enshrined in nature. The region’s national parks, conservation parks and UNESCO Biosphere boast one third of Australia’s bird species, more than 150 rare or endangered species, and unspoilt wetlands, rainforests and coastal heath. Being enveloped in nature allows for an abundance of nature-based activities. Water pursuits include surfing, sailing, kayaking, jet boating and dinner cruises. For land lovers, there is everything from farm-gate tours, seaside cycling, hinterland hikes and champion golf courses to shopping and day spas.

18 Meeting Planners’ Guide 2017-2018

Waterside parks, al fresco eateries, mountain-top vineyards, botanic ampitheatres and beach ‘ballrooms’ transform into nature-encased offsite venues, each offering a quintessential Queensland experience. Add to this mix accredited tour companies eager to show delegates some rarely accessed sites, then you’ll see why the Sunshine Coast offers a privileged glimpse into nature’s playground.

Nature abounds While less than 60 minutes from Queensland’s capital of Brisbane, nature has provided the Sunshine Coast with plentiful options for exciting and unusual team building, events and group activities. Stretching north from the Glass House Mountains, there is an emphasis on outdoor pursuits, and event organisers revel in the variety of recreational, team building and offsite options available. With over 60 national and conservation parks the region boasts more than one third of Australia’s bird species, more than 150 rare or endangered species, and unspoilt habitats including mangroves, wetlands, rainforests and coastal heath.

WHY SUNSHINE COAST?

Food, glorious food Bountifully blessed, the Sunshine Coast is a natural cornucopia with abundant locally farmed and freshly caught produce. Our university researchers are also playing their part by discovering new ways to extend and expand production to create a more prosperous farming future. With this earth and sea foundation as our backbone, the Sunshine Coast offers a bounty of foodie adventures, tasty attractions and gourmet experiences. Food lovers flock to the flavour-filled touring opportunities, including exciting food trails, hinterland vineyards, paddock-to-plate and trawlerto-table dining experiences, cooking schools, craft breweries, farmer markets, and food trucks. At each location delegates discover fresh produce that is blended, blitzed, minced, mixed, seared and smoked to create gourmet greatness. It is this combination of fresh ingredients, culinary creativity and mixology magic which has resulted in the region becoming one of Australia’s favourite taste destinations.

Spotlight on:

Peter Wolfe ‘The free ranging chef’ Fancy a slice of paperbark damper with wattle seed cream to enjoy while reading this Planners’ Guide? We know just the person to supply it. He is best known as the Free Ranging Chef because for the past 15 years Peter Wolfe has grown, harvested, gathered and transformed Australian native foods into tantalising treats and moreish meals. From his 50-acre Cedar Creek Farm Bush Foods property, Peter and wife, Shauna, craft a mesmerising array of sauces, jams and chutneys from local produce and native foods. It is a gentler life than his former one cooking in Tasmania, as chef in some of Noosa’s iconic restaurants and then as Exec Chef for a hotel chain, but no less busy. You can find Peter at the Original Eumundi Markets, while groups can gain an unmatched native food insight through guided tours and hosted meals thanks to Peter’s association with local experience provider, Live It Tours.

WHY SUNSHINE COAST?

Clean & green Enjoying one the most naturally beautiful places on the planet comes with a certain responsibility, one which residents and visitors fully embrace. A major outcome from this nurturing nature approach was the establishment of the Noosa Biosphere. The first in Queensland, the biosphere is committed to innovative approaches to conservation and sustainable development. Innovation was also behind the development of the region’s Living Smart and ecoBiz programs which help residents and businesses to reduce their ecological footprint and save money. This commitment has played a role in the region attracting cleantech and renewable energy businesses. These companies provide solutions that protect and promote the region’s – and the world’s – ecosystems and resources. With an army of volunteers acting as custodians of our clean and green environment, the future of the Sunshine Coast is guaranteed to be environmentally and economically successful.

WHY SUNSHINE COAST?

Abundant creativity Creativity is salve for the soul. This might help explain why so many artists, artisans, architects, actors and musicians have sought solace in the peaceful, relaxing environs of the Sunshine Coast. Thanks to this incredible talent pool, our arts scene thrives and much of our built environment blends in with nature. Noosa, Eumundi and the hinterland towns of Maleny and Montville are renowned arts centres, and boast a high concentration of galleries, home studios, boutique venues and performance spaces. There are also a number of large venues that attact national and international talent, such as The Events Centre in Caloundra and The J at Noosa, with smaller live music venues and fine art galleries dotted throughout the region. With such an abundance of creativity close at hand, delegates benefit from innovative conference-matched activities, workshops, interactive team building and site visits.

Retail goldmine From handcrafted, one-of-a-kind trinkets to highend luxury brands, who could pass up a dose of Sunshine Coast-style retail therapy? Step off the sand and onto boutique-lined Hastings Street or beachside Mooloolaba – both offer plenty for lovers of beautiful design. Or wander the leafy boulevard of mountaintop Montville to discover more than 40 unusual, original shopping outlets. Weekends see more than 20 markets pop up across the region, including Australia’s largest “make it, bake it, grow it, sew it” markets at Eumundi. The array of handmade garments, original artworks, artisan furniture, homewares, jewellery and gourmet indulgences makes the Sunshine Coast a veritable goldmine for delegates looking for a special memento to take home.

Nutworks

Ginger Factory

Macadamias are big on the Sunshine Coast. In fact, the region is the epicentre of Australia’s macadamia industry and home to some of the largest nut farms in the southern hemisphere. So it’s no wonder that they also boast Australia’s best macadamia processor, Nutworks. Taking raw kernels straight from their farms, Nutworks roasts the nuts and transforms them into delectable delicacies.

Did you know that historians believe that gingerbread men were first baked in the kitchens of Queen Elizabeth 1, who loved offering the then-exotic sweet to foreign diplomats? The allure of this aromatic root has not diminished over 500 years. Ginger is eaten in almost every country across the globe and the Sunshine Coast boasts the world’s largest ginger factory.

Grab macadamias in flavours that include hickory, wasabi, honey-roasted and chocolate. The Nutworks’ Tourism Range has been designed for the specific needs of international visitors who want to take a slice of Queensland home. The onsite and online shop also features macadamia oils and cosmetics for event organisers looking for something completely different.

Within the Ginger Factory’s nine-hectare grounds you’ll also find a significant tourist attraction, specialty retail outlets, educational tours, glorious gardens, ornamental flowering ginger and heliconia plants, dining options, as well as a sizeable shop that sells everything ginger. There’s ginger tea, marmalade, perfumes, cosmetics, tenderisers, toppings – even spiced ginger for sushi! For those who are a little ‘ginger’ about buying food gifts, the shop abounds in gardening gadgets and kitchen kitsch.

Andrew Lofthouse

Noosa Food Festival

It should be no surprise that a local man who loves the beach, runs marathons, enters triathlons and has a passion for music has played a big part in the Sunshine Coast attracting many national and international sports, music and cultural events. That is where the predictable factors end though, as there are many astonishing aspects to Andrew Lofthouse. He is one of Queensland’s leading television personalities, a nightly news presenter for the Nine Network, a former rock band musician and school teacher, and the patron of a male choir. Importantly, Andrew is also a founding member of the Sunshine Coast Events Board, and loves his Sunshine Coast life. It is his willingness to patiently espouse the benefits of hosting events here and enthusiastically sharing secrets that prove this is an ideal events destination that has been a lynchpin in the region’s major event success.

GOING OFFSITE

Noosa Main Beach One of Australia’s most popular beach destinations is also one of the nation’s favourite places to hold an extraordinary offsite event. Noosa’s world famous beach and adjacent Noosa Woods parkland are premium offsite options. One of only three north facing beaches on Australia’s east coast, Main Beach brims with dolphins as the late afternoon sky fills with the chocolate box colours of dusk. This is the perfect location for delegates to drink in cocktails and the sunset while wriggling their toes in the warm sand. Less than 100 metres from Hastings Street is Noosa Woods parkland, a water’s edge park with sandy foreshore and large trees that is ideal for a marquee or tipi dinner. From this waterside location guests can watch night lights twinkle across the tranquil Noosa River.

Queensland Signature Events Born from the knowledge that business visitors want to experience the true magnificence of the Sunshine Coast, Queensland Signature Events turns unique and iconic locations into stunning event venues. It took Managing Director, Liz Rivers, one of Australia’s most experienced business events professionals, more than three years of planning and 12 months of intense research before Queensland Signature Events led the charge to take offsite functions onto beaches, along waterside reserves, up mountain ranges, atop floating platforms and into beautiful parklands. The business satisfies a niche as unique as the events Liz and her team produce. Imagine a silver-service breakfast at a lighthouse, a sand island lunch or barefoot beach ball. Everything needed for these premium marquee, tipi and open-air events is arranged for you. The extraordinary has now become a breeze, giving event organisers the personal gift of time. Noosa Boathouse “Ooh, that’s beautiful. What is it?” asks a delegate from Melbourne as her group glide by a three-storey floating edifice on their vintage ferry tour along the Noosa River. THAT is the Noosa Boathouse – a magnificently positioned, multi-faceted bistro, bar and exclusive-use venue that nudges the sandy shore and stretches across the water to provision guests with far more than just stunning food. It is fitting that this venue that draws accolades from afar should have one of the nation’s most accomplished Exec Chefs at its helm. Shane Bailey has felt the salt on his skin ever since he started his apprenticeship along Victoria’s southern coast. A long and admired stint in seaside Melbourne followed, and was halted when a Noosa family holiday resulted in relocation. Shane’s Asian-influenced menu is light, tangy, flavoursome and incredibly fresh, and is a perfect reflection of the venue’s commitment to the values that embody the Sunshine Coast. It even has its own garden. Fancy finding that on a floating restaurant!

Spotlight on:

Australian Event Awards and Event Symposium When the Australian Event Awards wanted to find a ‘home’ for three years that would host an event that was as spectacular as the event professionals being honoured, they chose the Sunshine Coast. Sydney-based Managing Director, Ian Steigrad, knew the Sunshine Coast provided a great opportunity to not only showcase a magnificent stretch of Australian coastline, but also to demonstrate that regional destinations can offer the same level of service and industry innovation as any capital city. With the Awards’ 10th anniversary in 2018 coming up, he also wanted somewhere that understood big celebrations. The fact that the Sunshine Coast was set to host more than 50 major events that year created synergy and a focal point for the national events industry. The region’s breathtaking landscapes and nature-inspired activities, such as a group breakfast on a sandbar or swimming with the whales, were bonus benefits. The truth is that the Awards’ team knew everyone would have a whale of a time. eventawards.com.au

The Noosa Fesitval of Surfing is a week-long event that incorporates amateur and pro longboard surfing plus a range of other surfing disciplines, including stand-up paddle, tandem and finless. The ever-popular Surf Dogs Spectacular event is a sight not to be missed. The event also includes cultural entertainment and an event exclusive beach bar.

Why is the Queensland round of the national rally championship also the longest running? Because it plays out amongst towering eucalypts, fern-encircled lagoons and scenic landscapes. There is no better place to drive or watch fast cars race over dirt roads than in the beautiful Sunshine Coast hinterland. No wonder this is the most popular destination on the rally calendar.

After successfully hosting the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships in 2016, Mooloolaba will again welcome competitors for a qualifying event for the World Championships. Competitors will take in the best that Mooloolaba has to offer, with a swim off the surf beach, followed by a flat and fast bike course, finishing up with a two lap course of The Esplanade.
