his year is a very special one for our region as we commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast. To help us celebrate, we’re inviting our local community, and our millions of guests, to enjoy a calendar of outstanding events which align closely with our vision to be Australia’s most sustainable region – healthy, smart, creative. Our Sunshine Coast continues to attract a range of spectacular major events thanks to our region’s natural and beautiful surrounds, its friendly and welcoming community and our vibrant tourism offerings. Major events are an important economic and tourism driver for our region and we know the economic impact of those events can be broad and far reaching. Our region benefits economically from increased visitor numbers and also the localised expenditure associated with holding an event. Successful events are also strong motivators that encourage event participants and their guests to return for holidays or business. Throughout 2017, I encourage you, and your family and friends, to come participate in our calendar of events and warmly welcome our guests. I’m sure you will have a memorable time.
he Sunshine Coast officially turns 50 this year and will celebrate the anniversary with a series of major and community events across the region. Over the past year, the Sunshine Coast has proven it can successfully host largescale events with an impressive staging of the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships, Va’a World Outrigger Sprint Championships and the World IRONMAN 70.3 Championships. Events provide the perfect opportunity to not only showcase our region as a tourism destination but also position the Sunshine Coast as the regional events capital of Australia. In addition, the economic impact of major events is broad and far-reaching. They are worth tens of millions of dollars to our local economy each year. Research indicates three-quarters of event attendees would not have gone to a destination, if not for an event. Also, for 57 per cent of first-time visitors to the region, the event is the main reason for visiting and likewise for 69 per cent of repeat visitors. We look forward to more exciting events in 2017 including but not limited to the Velothon, Queensland Garden Expo, Caloundra Music Festival and Horizons Festival of Arts and Culture. Together with our volunteer ambassadors, tourism operators, council and wider community, we look forward to providing top-class service and invite the community to be part of the thrilling action here on the Sunshine Coast.

erformance, community and sporting venues are a valuable asset of our Sunshine Coast. They are versatile, vibrant hubs for community, cultural and commercial activities including theatre, concerts, sporting stadiums, cinema, major touring productions, cultural initiatives, recreation activities, programs and workshops. School-based activities, conferences, expos, meetings and key community events such as formals, weddings, graduations and eisteddfods are also staged in these venues. These venues are places for interaction and participation in the community and in cultural life. Watching a show extends beyond the stage and communities can become enlivened by vibrant and diverse arts and cultural experiences. Economically, performance and community venues attract investment, growth and economic development. Sunshine Coast Council has five key venues: Caloundra Indoor Stadium The Caloundra Indoor Stadium is the Coast’s only four court indoor multipurpose stadium. Set within a larger outdoor sporting precinct, the stadium also has five outdoor netball courts and a meeting space for hire. The venue

Lake Kawana Community Centre The Lake Kawana Community Centre is a modern performance, community and cultural venue with 15 different spaces available for hire. Set on the picturesque banks of Lake Kawana, this multi-purpose venue is ideal for a wide range of activities from community yoga classes through to gala events for up to 1000 people. Maroochydore Multi Sports Complex The Maroochydore Multi Sports Complex is the Sunshine Coast’s premier AFL facility and is also the region’s largest outdoor netball facility. Located only 15 minutes from the Sunshine Coast Airport across from the picturesque Maroochy River, the complex has three flood-lit AFL ovals and 26 netball courts. Sunshine Coast Stadium The Sunshine Coast Stadium is the premier venue for sport, leisure and entertainment for the Sunshine Coast region. The precinct has hosted many large scale events including the 2016 Australasian Police and Emergency Games, Va’a World Outrigging Championships, National Dragon Boat Titles, Touch Football National Youth Championships, AOCRA (outriggers) and the Nitro Circus Show. An innovative partnership has been formed between the Melbourne Storm NRL club and Sunshine Coast Council, with the Sunshine Coast Stadium now the home base for the Storm Under 20s National Youth Competition (NYC) team and Academy. Queensland Cricket, Sunshine Coast Falcons and Sunshine Coast Fire also continue to utilise the stadium as their local home base and administrative hub. Nambour Showgrounds The Nambour Showgrounds is centrally located within the Sunshine Coast region, ideally situated close to the Bruce Highway. Celebrating a milestone
T
he 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast will be officially commemorated on 1 August, 2017. Together, Coast residents, business people and political leaders plan to celebrate our region’s identity and showcase the history and future. The exciting milestone is also being used to celebrate and commemorate the people who have shaped and defined the Sunshine Coast. A special community concert, a poetry trail, a sand sculpture festival and a women’s AFL carnival are just a few of the ways the Coast will celebrate the region’s naming anniversary, with events funded by the 50th Anniversary grants endorsed by the Sunshine Coast Council. Mayor Mark Jamieson says the council is enthusiastic to endorse the diverse range of events and activities planned for the celebrations. “These exciting events will appeal to a broad range of ages and interests,’’ he says. “This anniversary milestone also allows us the opportunity to celebrate our region’s unique identity and showcase of past, present and future.” A major celebration will take place on 6 August, and this Sunshine Coast community concert is being touted as a musical spectacular, drawing together local artists and community groups to create an event to commemorate the historic occasion. Conducted by Kim Kirkman, the concert will be the work of a 100-piece orchestra, 200-voice choir, children’s choir and dancers. The free event will be held at the Sunshine Coast Stadium on Sportsmans Parade, Bokarina. Gates will open at 1pm. The story behind the name The Sunshine Coast name was launched in December 1958 at the
inaugural dinner of the Sunshine Coast Branch of the Real Estate Institute of Queensland, held at the Hotel Caloundra. The branch had begun a drive to popularise and obtain recognition for the name, to replace the term ‘near North Coast’, which was not considered distinct enough, and had “no significance for southerners”. The Sunshine Coast name was officially endorsed by the then Landsborough, Maroochy and Noosa councils in November 1966 when it was agreed to utilise the name to cover the three shires. The name tied in with the decision to also form the Sunshine Coast Promotion Bureau to promote the district. A Notification of Decision to Adopt a Place Name under the Queensland Place Names Act of 1958 appeared in the Queensland Government Gazette in July 1967. The name was endorsed by the Minister for Lands, Alan Fletcher, who advised that the decision would take effect from 1 August 1967.

Surfing the wave of success
The Sunshine Coast event will kick off this season’s regional surfing calendar, which will include the HIF Queensland Masters and Women’s Surfing Titles, and the Queensland Grommet Titles. All events are well established and draw spectators and competitors from all cultures of surfing. The Queensland Surfing Series includes nine events ranging from junior events right through to masters.

an the Sunshine Coast secure a hat-trick? This is the question on the lips of those in the surfing community who are gearing up for the annual QCC Sunshine Coast Pro. The best on the circuit will take to the surf on 27-28 May in the hope of catching that wave of success. If a local surfer takes out the win, it will be the third year our region has retained the title on home turf. Alexandra Headland’s Jack Reginato took out the 2016 Pro in marginal conditions at Coolum. Showing experience beyond his years, Reginato’s display of power surfing was evident as he posted the best single wave score of the final, an 8.57 out of a possible 10. Meanwhile, Mt Coolum’s Kai Hing claimed victory in 2015 following a stellar performance. The Sunshine Coast Pro is the region’s most coveted title and forms part of the premium Queensland Championship Circuit Series, which boasts a number of surfing events held throughout the state.

ONE FOR THE DIARY… Be sure to mark 9-10 December in your diary to check out some of the best surfing action from the country’s youngest boardriders. Regarded as one of the major stepping stones in the development of young Australian surfers, the nine-event Wahu Surfer Groms Comps series is for surfers from under 8 to under 14.
Did you know? The Sunshine Coast has been home to some of the world’s best surfing legends including 2012 WSL world champion Joel Parkinson, former Australian Pro Junior Wade Goodall, WSL world champion Julian Wilson and world champion Steph Gilmore.

he Etchells class was designed in 1966 by Skip Etchells, a yacht designer and boat builder from the US. Following a competition held the previous year, the International Yacht Racing Union (IYRU) was looking for a new three-man Olympic keelboat. The Etchells won the trials but was not selected, but it didn’t take away from one fact – that the Etchells class was born. The boat was named E22 because the design is 22 feet on the waterline. As time moved forward, the league continued to grow and by February 1973, the E22 Class Association of Australia was formed. As they say, the rest is history. The Mooloolaba Yacht Club is now gearing up to deliver the 21st year of the iconic Etchells Australasian Winter Championship in June 2017. The winter championship is a

round 500 enthusiastic players are set to battle it out on the fields of Sunshine Coast Stadium for the inaugural Oztag Tri-Series in June. Oztag Queensland sports development officer Cameron Cashin says the tournament will give competitors a chance to represent their state. “Basically we select a Queensland team every year and we found through that, a lot of good players are missing out on the Queensland team because of one bad tournament. We thought we’d give them a next level tournament where the best of the best of our state could play off.’’ For each division – ranging from under 10 to over 50s – there is a city and a country team. For each of those categories, eight players are named as shadow players.
weekend warriors seeking out the Etchells Winter competition. Mooloolaba is a popular sailor’s destination offering one of the few sailing venues on the east-coast that provides quick, easy access to open water. The competition is fierce, fun and worth checking out.

“Those eight players will go into another side, called the Barbarians,’’ Cashin says. “They play against the city and the country teams, which is where the tri-series comes into it.’’ The open mens and open mixed games are being tipped as the definite go-to matches of the weekend. There will also be a Friday night launch event at Sportsmans Parade with market stalls, rides and buskers.

he objective of the game is simple – score tries. And, chase down the opponent by tagging them instead of tackling. This is the world of Oztag, a sport which has garnered a strong following here in Queensland. This July, around 1000 school students are expected to don their jerseys and head to Sunshine Coast Stadium for the 2017 Queensland Oztag ALL Schools competition. It is expected about 120 teams from 35 schools throughout the state will compete. The players will come from as far west as Cunnamulla, Townsville in the north and the Tweed Coast in the south. The competitors are aged between grades five to 12 and will put on a display of impressive skills and admirable sportsmanship. Be sure to check out all the action.

O
ne of the most hotly-contested events on the state gymnastics calendar will see more than 1200 talented gymnasts from across Queensland and beyond put their sporting prowess on show on the Sunshine Coast between June 23 and 28. Gymnastics Queensland CEO Kym Dowdell says the annual Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) and Men’s Artistic Gymnastics (MAG) State Club Championships will be held at the Caloundra Indoor Stadium, with the much-anticipated Border Challenge competition also scheduled as part of the event. “The Border Challenge competition welcomes clubs from Western Australia, ACT, New South Wales and Victoria, creating some friendly state rivalry as our homegrown gymnasts battle it out for the top spot – and, of course, bragging rights,” Dowdell says.
“We’re also thrilled to have gymnasts from Malaysia joining the WAG competition line-up this year, which will add an international flavour to the event and really heighten the stakes as participants compete for some of Queensland’s most coveted gymnastics medals. “While other state championship events focus on competing as individuals, this meet will see teams from various clubs take to the floor and display their teamwork and group spirit, culminating in the best team being crowned the State club champions.” Dowdell says the competing gymnasts have been working hard to perfect their routines. “Meets such as this one are a great precursor to the 2018 Commonwealth Games, with many of the state’s gymnasts having their sights firmly set on making the national team. “Competitors will have the
opportunity to learn from one another, improve their technique and develop new skills.” “Around 40 clubs are expected to participate, with athletes taking to apparatus such as the vault, rings, parallel bars, horizontal bar, pommel horse, uneven bars and balance beam as well as completing floor routines throughout the six-day event.” Dowdell says with plenty of highenergy routines on display, the gymnastics event will make for an entertaining and enjoyable day out for anyone with an interest in the sport or simply looking for a fun family activity. Members of the public are invited to come along and watch some of the country’s most skilled gymnasts in action as they deliver complex moves and displays of flexibility and strength. Entry is free for children under 18, with adult tickets available at the door and starting from just $10 per session. My Events | May 2017 25

Historical sporting event on the green
H
undreds of keen lawn bowlers are set to converge on our region’s greens in July for a historical sporting event. The Sunshine Coast Winter Bowls Carnival is celebrating its 55th anniversary in 2017 with around 600 guests expected to visit or participate in the competition. Hosted by some of the best Queensland bowls clubs, and all based on the Coast, the carnival attracts visitors from intrastate, interstate and from New Zealand. The event is one of the biggest lawn bowls competitions in the country and brings around $1 million to the local economy. The carnival boasts a prize pool of
more than $16,000 and is staged at various clubs throughout the region including Caloundra, Club Maroochy, Pelican Waters, Buderim and Mooloolaba. Take a look back This year the Sunshine Coast celebrates the 50th anniversary of its naming. The sport of bowls also has a lengthy history here in the region, spanning back 55 years. Today, with the advent of barefoot bowls and numerous social games and competitions, it is interesting to look back at the beginnings of some of the region’s earliest bowls clubs. Like many clubs and organisations, bowls clubs have played, and continue
to play, an important part in community life and in the development of the tourism industry. From its earliest days, bowls has been a popular sport, producing some great champions too. After World War II, lawn bowls was flourishing in the region as a sport. Members worked hard fundraising and labouring to establish bowls clubs and without them the early clubs would not exist. In March 1919, a meeting was held to form a bowls club at Buderim and G Burrows, who was elected secretary, made some of his land available for a bowling green. At the time, the club joining fee was two pounds two shillings ($5) with an annual fee of half the amount. Initial matches were held in 1921 but by early 1923, the club was wound up and it was not until April 1951 that a new bowls club formed in Buderim. By 1952 a green was under construction in Elizabeth Street and when the green was opened for play in 1955, club membership comprised 24 men and 28 ladies. The original clubhouse was purchased at an auction of army buildings and dismantled and re-erected on the green. Many of the Sunshine Coast’s present bowls clubs formed in the 1930s and rapidly developed.

reen thumbs from across Queensland and beyond are gearing up to get the dirt on all things gardening, landscaping and floristry, with the 33rd annual Queensland Garden Expo set to take place between 7 and 9 July. Event manager Marion Beazley says she anticipates close to 40,000 people will attend the three-day event, with keen gardeners expected to travel from as far as New Zealand for their hit of gardening inspiration. “Over the past three decades, the expo has developed a significant following and has earnt its stripes as the gardening event with the largest and most comprehensive speaker program in Australia,” Beazley says. “This year’s program will feature more than 120 presentations and demonstrations across eight stages, with a range of industry experts getting behind the microphone to share their insights and tips. “We’re delighted to have some well-known faces from Gardening Australia joining the speaker line-up as well as various homegrown experts from the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane.” Beazley says a dedicated team of gardening professionals will be on hand throughout the expo to answer attendees’ questions and offer free, personalised advice. “Whether you’re seeking treatment tips for a sick plant, want help on how to make your garden blossom, or simply wish to identify an unknown plant in your garden, our free plant clinic is the place to go for guidance. “We’ll also have numerous experienced landscapers on site to discuss current trends and outdoor design solutions. “As always, a number of beautifully landscaped gardens will be on display to inspire attendees about the endless possibilities for their own backyard

The who’s who of gardening Garden designer, writer and botanist Michael McCoy is one of the key speakers lined up for this year’s expo. McCoy is the presenter of the new ABC program Dream Gardens, which showcases the making of some of Australia’s most lavish gardens. Joining McCoy will be Gardening Australia presenter Sophie Thomson. A regular face at the Queensland Garden Expo, Thomson has a wealth of knowledge to share.
Expert advice with Sophie Thomson: What would you describe as the perfect garden? I don’t think a garden should be perfect actually. Nature’s not perfect and nature’s about as perfect as you can get. So my perfect garden would be one where I got to play in it every day. You can have a garden by buying the best garden a garden designer can create for you, but if you only look at it from inside, you’re actually not interacting with it. It’s still better than not having green space around you, but to me a garden is a verb, not a noun, so it’s about our interaction with nature, and being outside and noticing the amazing beauty in a single flower.

COME TO LIFE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST
Global cycling challenge comes to the Sunshine Coast
I
n July the Sunshine Coast will host Australia’s first Velothon event with riders enjoying a staged race environment in a ‘Gran Fondo’ setting. Velothon is a global series of road cycling events that span across Germany, Wales, Sweden, Canada and now the Sunshine Coast. Not content with setting just one record, the organisers of the first Australian Velothon event have also decided to make this a multi-day version of the worldwide series. Riders will be able to select either a one-day or a three-day ride across the region as organisers put a coastal spin on the traditional European event. Ironman Oceania regional director Rebecca Van Pooss says it is a no-brainer to host the event on the Sunshine Coast as our region has become known as a genuine cycling mecca with truly magnificent and equally challenging roads. “The Sunshine Coast is custom made for cycling and what makes the Velothon truly unique is the combination of the intensely beautiful scenery and how the roads keep the rider both entertained and switched on,” she says. “Just when you are being lulled and feeling comforted by the beauty of the Sunshine Coast hinterland and the long shadow of the Glass House Mountains, you are quickly brought back to reality by the true challenge of Velothon, the consistent rollercoaster undulations and the sharp climbs. “Some riders who have experienced the course have said that Velothon Sunshine Coast walks the line between beauty and brutality. While challenging at times, there is incredible diversity throughout the course and the fast and dramatic stretches of road and stunning descents make it a very achievable experience.” The three-day (361 kilometres) and the one-day (155 or 95 kilometres) courses include:
Stage 1 - 118km hinterland climbing Takes riders across the 118km route from Sippy Downs to Buderim. Riders will encounter relentless short form climbs, fast descents and amazing scenery, reaching close to 500 metres altitude in some sections of the course. The main element of the first stage is the constant undulations. This relentless nature of the course will test riders’ legs more than they may anticipate. Stage 2 - 88km Glasshouse Mountains This stage starts at Moffat Beach and finishes in Woombye. This is the
sprinter’s day. A sprint finish gives everyone a chance to claim enviable bragging rights. Stage 3 - coastal 155km Ride along the beach from Mudjimba to Noosa before heading inland towards Kenilworth where more challenges await. The inland section of this course will be either the highlight or the bane as riders will need to conquer the beast known as Obi Obi Hill, which reaches a scary 27 per cent gradient. Off the bike, every ride starts and finishes in and around Mooloolaba, with a dedicated Velo Clubhouse on the beachfront, open throughout each day
and in to the evening for riders, friends and family to relax and share in the experience. The event is scheduled to coincide with Tour De France so riders can fully immerse themselves in the world of cycling for three days, both on and off the bike. Matt Keenan is a keen rider and had the opportunity to be one of the first people to experience Velothon Sunshine Coast earlier this year. “Putting the event on in July is a smart move,” Keenan says. “The events calendar isn’t as busy at that time of year and it’s a great excuse for those from the southern states to escape the My Events | May 2017 33

depths of winter. Plus there’s the added buzz of the Tour de France in July that just makes you want to get out and ride. “The part I enjoyed the most was riding the rolling roads where you are hitting speeds into the mid-40 kilometres and there are a few climbs in front of you that are short. “You are not sure if it is big or small chain ring and you punch over them. “The big challenge of Velothon is a sense of the fatigue building up but it will give riders a genuine appreciation for what happens to athletes at the Tour De France. “That is what distinguishes Velothon Sunshine Coast from the other Gran Fondos.” Riders can take home the daily King of the Mountain, Sprint, Team or Stage winners’ jerseys or just ride for the love of it.

COME TO LIFE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST has expanded into Wales, Stockholm and Edmonton, all as a one-day event format. Velothon Sunshine Coast is the first multi-day version of this outstanding worldwide series. Velothon is all about immersing yourself in cycling and we will be building a Velo Clubhouse for riders to relax in after their day on the bike, share some banter and enjoy a full immersion cycling experience. The Sunshine Coast will host the first Velothon in Australia. Tell us how that came about. Ironman owns and operates all Velothons internationally so we had the rights internally to decide on the best location and format for the event. We saw an opportunity for a multi-day Gran Fondo mass participation road cycling event during the winter months when the weather on the Sunshine Coast is ideal
for riding. The event is scheduled to coincide with the largest cycling event [on the planet] – Tour de France – on the planet so riders can fully immerse themselves in the world of cycling for three days, both on and off the bike. We decided on a multi-day format as often, for the keen cycling amateur, one day of riding is never enough and people would be more inclined to travel to a multi-day event. We spent months researching options, consulting with stakeholders and working with the Sunshine Coast Council and Tourism and Events Queensland to come up with a stunning course and great hub. Why is the Sunshine Coast an ideal space for this type of cycling event? Quite simple – the Sunshine Coast has everything to make for a great cycling experience, great roads, epic
climbs, ideal riding weather in winter and a great hub in Mooloolaba with ample accommodation and cafes and bars. What will this mean for the Sunshine Coast given the Berlin Velothon event attracts around 15,000 riders? The event is designed to appeal to the travelling rider who is looking to get out of winter from more southern locations around Australia and New Zealand. Accordingly, we expect the event to deliver significant economic benefit from visitors coming to the Sunshine Coast for anywhere upwards of three nights. We expect the event to help support Queensland’s positioning as one of the best endurance sporting capitals of Australia. How many people are you expecting for this first event? We have set modest targets in year
one so as to test impacts on roads, local communities and ensure we deliver an outstanding athletic experience. Following year one, we will review and assess capacities as we look to grow this into a large mass participation multi day ride. How, and why, did you choose the locations or routes for the three days of riding? We wanted to include all the Sunshine Coast has to offer, focusing on using quiet backcountry roads, stunning scenery and providing a variety of riding conditions each day. Day one is focused on climbing in the beautiful hinterland; day two is more a sprint stage and day three takes in some rolling coastline and back into the hinterland and up the mighty Obi Obi climb.

undreds of competitors are set to challenge themselves and tackle 42 kilometres on foot for the annual 7Sunshine Coast Marathon. People of all athletic abilities will
pound the pavement on 20 August to challenge the course and themselves in the final event of the Community Running Festival 2017, which also includes the McDonald’s Half Marathon, Westpac 10 kilometre run, Love and Partners 5 kilometre run, Queensland Government Family two kilometre Dash and the Cricks Fun Run. Competitors can run as an individual, a school team, a community group or a running group – whatever the format, the end goal is the same – challenge yourself and have fun. This year’s half-marathon event will catch the eye of competitors as the country’s fastest male and female distance runners vie for line honours. They will secure a $25,000 pay day if they break the country’s long-standing half-marathon record. Two-time Olympian Collis Birmingham and Australia’s fastest
current female marathoner Cassie Fien will be the leading runners to take up the challenge of half-marathon records. 7Sunshine Coast Marathon event director and Atlas Multisports founder Jason Crowther says the 21.1 kilometre event has attracted national and international runners previously, but 2017 is the first time event organisers have targeted the ambitious goal. “We’ve seen some extremely fast times across all distances since we started in 2012,” Crowther says. “This course has proven itself to be fast and with an increasing number of elite runner entries we felt it was time to give the half-marathon record a shake. “With a significant financial incentive and the best of Australia’s distance runners on the start line, we’re expecting to see a red hot race.” Since its inception the marathon has raised more than $1 million for charities.

fter nine rounds of fuel-laden adrenaline, it all comes down to the Motul MX Nationals championship decider – round 10, to be held at Coolum. The Coolum Pines Circuit is accustomed to hosting the Australian Motocross Championship’s elite riders, having played host to the series final for several years. If history repeats itself, it will be a close race to the 2017 title and this year’s champion will not be finalised until the last moto crosses the line. With the track located just minutes from the beach, the sandy conditions will be a welcome surface for those riders who like to ride on the edge. Round 10 is the second time in 2017 the Sunshine Coast has hosted the best riders from around the country and New Zealand, with riders hitting up
Connondale’s Green Park for Round 3 earlier this year. While competitors will be doing all they can to succeed, they may also be channelling some of that competitive edge into decorating their bikes and gear pink. The closing round of the Motul MX Nationals will be dubbed the Pink Ribbon round and dedicated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation to raise funds for those suffering from the effects of breast cancer. To secure the best vantage spot on the Coolum circuit, you will need to rise and shine bright and early on 19 and 20 August, with gates opening at 7.30am and the competitive riding kicking off at 8am. But, it will be well worth the effort to see the best of the best in their element.

National Youth Championships to touch down on Sunshine Coast
T
he world’s best youth and masters touch footballers will descend on the Sunshine Coast Stadium in September with the highly popular Harvey Norman National Youth Championships (NYC) confirmed to be held in our region. The NYC, along with the championships’ five-day events program, attracts thousands of visitors to our region during the period and will feature another innovative format to the overall program. In further news, by extension of Touch Football Australia’s long-standing partnership with the Sunshine Coast Council and connection to the region, the event is locked down until 2020 at Sunshine Coast Stadium. The overall five-day events program will feature: The Harvey Norman National Youth Championships; the Harvey Norman School Series Cup; the
Alliance Cup and Masters Trans-Tasman. Touch Football Australia’s Julian Buckmaster says the outcome is positive for both the sport and participants alike. The format will be particularly exciting with four series held in conjunction with the one event. “We are seeing tremendous growth in our schools’ space and nothing but positive feedback on not only the Youth Championships, but also the inaugural Schools Cup and Alliance Cup which also brings a critical open division dimension to the event mix,’’ Buckmaster says. As with the modular nature of this event, the 2017 Masters Trans-Tasman series will add another exciting international dimension with Australia and New Zealand going head-to-head across the five masters divisions.
Sunshine Coast Council’s Economic Tourism, Events and Sport Portfolio councillor Jason O’Pray says hosting the National Youth Touch Football Championships over the next four years will provide plenty of exciting benefits for the Sunshine Coast. “Tourism, sport and leisure is one of seven high-value industries on the Sunshine Coast and in 2016, we played host to more than 60 major sporting, music and lifestyle events that brought an estimated 150,000 guests from all over the world. “So we’re accustomed to hosting major events and providing a warm welcome for our guests. “It’s great that we’re keeping the ball rolling in 2017, which also marks the 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast, by securing more major events like the National Youth Touch Championships.”

ronman 70.3 Sunshine Coast is set to return in September. Last year was a historic year with the first ever Ironman 70.3 World Championship event coming to the southern hemisphere with Sunshine Coast chosen as the host destination. Ironman 70.3 Sunshine Coast was launched in 2013. When entries opened for the event it took less than two hours to sell out – the first time this had ever happened globally. And this year is set to be bigger and better with a world-class course taking in highlights of the region from country to coast. Competitors from all over Australia will take in the best that Mooloolaba has to offer, starting with a swim off the surf beach followed by a fast bike course.
The run will tie up the day’s exciting events with a two-lap course around Mooloolaba’s Esplanade cheered on by thousands of spectators. Details for this year’s course include: Swim: 1.9km The ocean swim consists of a one-lap course that follows an anti-clockwise direction and starts and finishes at Mooloolaba’s Loo with a View. The fortunate ones will ride a nice wave into shore before transition on Beach Terrace, a similar layout to the World Championship. Swim cut off time is one hour. Bike ride: 90km An exciting legacy of the 2016 Ironman 70.3 World Championship course, the

There is one significant difference with the removal of the sharp 16 per cent climb on Upper Rosemount Road. At the completion of the second lap, athletes will head back onto the motorway and into T2 adjacent to the beach at Mooloolaba. The cut-off time for this is four hours and 30 minutes from the starting time.

The cut-off time for this is seven hours and 30 minutes from the start time. The finish line is at Mooloolaba Esplanade. Ironman 70.3 Sunshine Coast provides a fitting warm-up for athletes heading over to Kona, Hawaii to take on the Ironman World Championship in October.

says fans have high expectations when it comes to the musical line-up. “Over the past 10 years, CMF has built a strong reputation for nurturing and showcasing some amazing local talent and providing countless
opportunities for many local artists. “In recent years we’ve run the CMF Emerging Youth Artist Mentoring and Promotion program, which allows us to take advantage of the high calibre musicians in town for CMF who would otherwise be unreachable for mentoring opportunities. “We’re always looking at ways to enhance the knowledge, experience and networks of our local emerging artists and help them moving forward in their careers,’’ he says. Sunshine Coast Deputy Mayor Tim Dwyer says CMF’s support of local artists and musicians is an important legacy of the festival. “CMF has contributed a number of outstanding legacy items to the local community including new infrastructure, ground-breaking sustainable initiatives and amazing opportunities for local artists,’’ he says.
Who’s playing? Eighty-three bands are tipped to perform at the 2017 festival. Joining the line up will be: • Ronan Keating • Art Vs Science • Clairy Browne • Drapht • Jon Stevens • Spiderbait • Thundamentals • The Black Sorrows More artist announcements to be made in coming months.

t’s estimated that Australia’s clothing, textile and footwear industry is valued at close to $3 billion. Throw in another $7.5 billion for retail and wholesale sectors and the employment of more than 200,000 people. Impressive isn’t it? The Sunshine Coast has contributed its fair share to this industry and the region’s reputation for being fashion forward is growing as a direct result of the melting pot of local designers and fashion events. The annual Sunshine Coast International Fashion Festival is, without a doubt, the shining light on the scene. In the 10 years since its inception, festival director Jacinta Richmond has brought a number of high-profile designers to the region to show their creative wares. It has become the perfect runway for emerging designers to showcase their
collections in the company of established designers. The event also provides visitors and residents alike the chance to celebrate the best that the industry has to offer. In 2016, Czarina Kaftans, Indi Stone, Opera, Sunflair and Nicola Finetti were among the line-up. And, this year will be no different. Experience a glittering weekend of fashion, encompassing couture, ready to wear, swimwear and ethical design. A ticket grants entry to the catwalk shows and the trade lounge (where you can shop wholesale straight off the catwalk). To mark the 10-year anniversary, organisers have launched a new event to the festival calendar. The Sustainable Fashion Industry Q&A will kick off the October festival with a panel of industry leaders answering questions on manufacturing, purchasing and your global footprint.

Spiritual wonder

here in the world can you find a mindful living festival built on the combination of yoga, music, food and sustainability? The answer is nowhere other than on the Sunshine Coast. Wanderlust is believed to be the only event of its kind in the world. It is a 360-degree yoga lifestyle platform that includes multi-day festival experiences and mindful triathlon events. The celebration features internationally renowned yoga instruction, guest speakers and leaders in green-living, music from world-class musical acts, top chefs, craft brewers and winemakers. It’s about living a life of practice, sharing life with others in person – not in front of a screen; consuming food locally, organically, and ethically; preserving and protecting our planet for future generations; and appreciating and fostering the creative spark in ourselves and others. It provides people the chance to embark on a journey with like-minded people to learn about their bodies, their minds, their world and how their actions affect our environment. Do yourself a favour, get in touch with your spiritual self and get along to Wanderlust.

Don’t miss a visit to one of the many picturesque waterfalls in the area including: Gardeners Falls, Kondalilla Falls, Mapleton Falls, Boolumba Falls, Wappa Falls, Serenity Falls or Nambour Falls. 4. If adventurous walks are your style, challenge yourself on a hike of the 58 kilometre Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk or the 102 kilometre Cooloola Great Walk, both recognised as part of the Great Walks of Queensland. These will take you through some of the area’s most scenic and little known locations.

2. Sunshine Coast beaches are rimmed with wide stretches of clean, white sand, with a choice of surf or calm bays sparkling with warm water. Whether you’re searching for a secluded patch of sand to sink your toes into and soak up the sunshine, a family-friendly spot where the kids can make friends with other sandcastlemakers or the best dog-friendly spots, the Sunshine Coast has dozens of safe and picturesque beaches to choose from. Of note, Kings Beach ranked 18 in TripAdvisor’s top 25 beaches in Australia, while Mooloolaba Beach, number eight, is one of few northern facing beaches on the east-coast of Australia, where the water is calm and enticing year-round.

1. The Glass House Mountains are an awe-inspiring landscape. Let the magic wash over you as you take a leisurely drive through the National Park, stopping at picturesque lookouts along the way, or get the blood pumping with some hiking, rock climbing or abseiling. We suggest you visit the new, worldclass Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve Rainforest Discovery Centre at Maleny. Offering spectacular views of the Glass House Mountains, the $4.7 million Discovery Centre features an elevated viewing platform, boardwalk and the education centre has interactive displays, multi-sensory experiences and exhibits.

8. With talented buskers sawing away on their violins and pavement artists creating their next masterpiece, if you wander through the bustle and buzz of a market in this corner of Queensland, it won’t take you long to realise why the Sunshine Coast ranks as one of the top market destinations in Australia. From the famous Original Eumundi Markets, which are the largest artisan markets in the southern hemisphere, to the tasty treats at Caloundra Street Fair, a stroll around the stalls is a great way to glean a sense of the Sunshine Coast’s character and meet the real locals behind the goods. 9. There’s no better way to soak up the beauty of the Caloundra region than by strolling or cycling along the coastal trail. Take on the entire 25 kilometre stretch from Golden Beach in the south to Point Cartwright in the north or enjoy strolling along sections of the walk at a leisurely pace. If you’re travelling with children, be sure to stop at the familyfriendly Kings Beach where the kids can play in the water park or explore the rock pools. 10. Mount Coolum National Park, especially the green-cloaked dome of Mount Coolum, dominates the skyline of the Sunshine Coast lowlands. After rain, waterfalls cascade down steep craggy cliffs to open eucalypt forest skirting the lower slopes. Towards the summit, rare montane heath grows. The park also protects coastal wallum, paperbark wetlands and rainforest remnants. Climb the steep, rough 800 metre trail up the mountain’s eastern side from the carpark to the summit. Be rewarded with 360 degree views – most spectacular at sunrise. Look for peregrine falcons nesting along cliff faces. In winter and spring, photograph wildflowers. See how many different types of banksia you can find.
