Hold stylish celebrations in unique country locations where rustic and rural settings abound along with traditional values and professional standards. This book will give you ideas for your celebration – an intimate get-together or a large event. The suppliers here cover a wide range of services including country halls and venues, catering, flowers, accommodation, transport, entertainment and more. All work together or with your choice of providers to ensure your event is exactly what you are looking for.

The Mary Valley invites

You, your family and friends...

To join us in Celebration! Depending on the type of 'Celebration' and whether it is casual or formal, large or small, the following details on an invitation can be helpful for both guest and host. Timing of invitations – For all but the most casual dinner parties, make sure you send out invitations at least a month in advance. For formal occasions like a wedding or significant anniversary six – eight weeks should be su cient. ‘Save the date’ – It may be appropriate to send out a ‘save the date’, followed later with the real invitation. This applies when people may need to travel long distances or take time off work in order to attend. To bring or not to bring – Let your guests know what they should – or should not – bring: ‘BYO beverages’, ‘bring a plate of food’ or ‘No gifts’. This can save a huge amount of embarrassment. Food & drink – If supplying the food yourself or through a caterer, make sure you ask your guests to advise of any food allergies or other dietary restrictions. Directions – If you live somewhere hard-to-find, include a map or directions. Dress Code – It is important to let your guests know what may or may not be appropriate – this can include a dress theme – eg. Cartoon characters. Make it obvious as to whether it is formal or casual. This can save your guests a lot of uncertainty and will help shape the atmosphere you want. Social media – By all means use social media, but it may be most suitable for large gatherings, in which case you can create ‘an event’. If you choose to invite guests through Facebook, send invitations using a private message. Be aware that for formal occasions such as weddings it is appropriate to send the invitation by regular mail.

Information to include

Include the time, date, place and if the Celebration marks a special occasion.

RSVP Make sure there is a suitable contact for replies and a date by which replies will be accepted.

ELSIE OF IMBIL

"Welcome home..." 'Elsie' is a modest worker’s cottage built somewhere in the early 1900s, ...the earliest photo of the house dates to 1916. Elsie of Imbil holds a special place in our hearts. In 1945 our Grandparents purchased the home, in 1985 our Grandfather passed away, but Grandma continued to live there until 1995 when she moved to Gympie to live with her daughter Thelma. In 2012 we were fortunate enough to buy her back, Elsie has been re-roofed, and polished till she sparkles again as the home of our fondest childhood memories. Please enjoy your time in Elsie, treat her as your own.

IMBIL COUNT RY CABINS

"Welcome home..." Say goodbye to ‘Cabins by the Creek’ and hello to the newly refurbished ‘Imbil Country Cabins’. It’s not only the name that’s new - new kitchens, new bathrooms, new flooring, new beds, all new new new. But not new-toImbil owners! Karen and Donna have been coming to Imbil since the 60’s and 70’s, visiting their grandparents home in Elizabeth Street. That home is “Elsie of Imbil” and was originally purchased by Ted and Elsie Zillmann in 1945 now lovingly restored and available for holiday accommodation. On those special visits to Imbil the girls loved spending time on “the farm”. A property owned by their Uncle and Aunt, Ray and Thelma Myers. So by God’s grace this property is now in the care of the girls whose love for Imbil as children has led them back home. Now they welcome you. Imbil Country Cabins are perfectly located on the Yabba Creek looking over the Imbil weir. Surround yourself with six hectares of land, enjoy a swim in the pool or canoeing on the Yabba.

SOFT DRINKS Don’t 'Celebrate' without them! Not all of your guests will choose to drink alcohol and some will prefer to limit their alcohol consumption. Perhaps they are driving themselves and others elsewhere after the event or limiting consumption for health reasons. Maybe they just do not enjoy the taste. So keep your celebration safe and in order and make everyone feel included by adding a selection of soft drinks to your beverage list. There are lots of options available: LEMONADES AND COLAS Traditional mixers including ginger ale and tonic water can be served alone or as part of a ‘fruitpunch’ or ‘mocktail’. Add a slice of lemon or lime, a touch of bitters and Celebrate with a difference. JUICES Try something different by offering up cranberry, grape or maybe even pomegranate instead of the standard orange, apple or pineapple. MOCKTAILS & NON ALCOHOLIC PUNCH These make the perfect accompaniment to a celebration and put your guests in the party mood. CORDIALS AND ESSENCES Spice up your softdrinks with cinnamon, cherry, mint or a host of other fascinating flavours. COFFEE & TEA WATER Sparkling or still. Tap or bottled. Always have it available at the bar.

MARY VALLEY VILLAGES As you drive through the valley to or from your celebration destination you can discover local villages, each with their unique features.

Amamoor

Dagun and Lagoon Pocket

A restored train station and great community spirit keep alive the traditions of food production with the Dagun weekly growers' market, along with the timber sawmill that has been operating since the early 1900s. Lagoon Pocket was once the site of a primary school and is a friendly quiet community

Amamoor

Kandanga

Amamoor sits on the edge of the Amamoor State Forest which offers platypus viewing, hiking, waterfalls and great waterholes. This village explodes with activity during the annual country music Muster which attracts people from all over Australia in August.

Kandanga

Come to Kandanga and visit the Save the Mary Museum and River Education Centre, and catch up with a local at the info centre. You might even see a platypus at the Kandanga Creek bridge and you can park your RV here.

Imbil

Kenilworth

The jewel of the Mary Valley, Imbil is its largest town and gateway to the expansive Borumba Dam, providing shops and services for campers and visitors. It hosts a local agricultural show, art festival and two international events – the Easter endurance riding carnival and the International Rally of Queensland.

Brooloo

Now a small community at the base of a rocky bluff, this was once the end of the Mary Valley train line.

Kenilworth

Crystal Waters

The second largest town in the heart of the Mary Valley, Kenilworth is known for saving its cheese factory from closure and turning it into a community business. Its Easter food and wine festival attracts thousands of visitors to Mary Valley Country.

Conondale and Crystal Waters

A short drive from Maleny, Conondale is in the centre of traditional dairy pastures and its school marked its Centenary in 2012. Crystal Waters is internationally respected for its unique shared title arrangement based on permaculture principles.

FLOWERS Having difficulty choosing the style of bouquet for your special day? The list below outlines what you can expect in different styles. Posy – circular in shape, flowers used are generally round in shape and of equal size. Natural Stem – often referred to as a hand tied bouquet, it features visible stems and a variety of size and shaped blooms. Trailing – a slender collection of blooms from top to tip, usually evenly balanced. The bouquet may have either a wide or narrow trail. Teardrop – a posy style top with a narrowing trail of wired blooms to form a teardrop shape. Arm Sheath – a collection of blooms that lie along the forearm or hangs from the hand.

Caring for your flowers.

Flowers are an important element of all celebrations and may feature strongly in photographs of your event. It is important to work with your florist to choose flowers that reflect your style and personality. Your florist will have taken much care in selection and preparation of your flowers whether in an arrangement or bouquet. It is in your best interest to help them last as long as possible. Most floral arrangements last four to seven days or longer, depending on the flowers used and the care they receive. The longevity of flowers varies greatly between the different varieties and is based upon the structure and delicacy of its petals and density. The following tips are provided to assist you in caring for your flowers once you receive them for your special event or occasion:

• Keep the vase filled (or floral foam soaked) with water containing a flower

food provided byyour florist. Flower foods make flowers last longer but it is important to follow the mixing directions on the flower food packet

• Keep flowers in a cool spot away from direct sunlight, heating or cooling vents, directly under ceiling fans, or on top of televisions or radiators (appliances like televisions give off heat, which causes flowers to dehydrate). Most flowers will last longer under cool conditions. Wedding Bouquets.

• Upon delivery, keep your flowers in the coolest part of the house. • Keep bouquets in water or in boxed packaging (keep boxes in car during

transport to hold up bouquets and allow the flowers to drink). A hand towel can be used to wipe off any excess water so as not to mark gowns.

• Only handle bouquets when absolutely necessary and as gently as possible to avoid bruising and displacing blooms.

CAPT URE YOUR CELEBRAT ION Memories may fade, but bring out the pictures and all the excitement, pride and love from the special occasion comes rushing back. But do you need a professional photographer? Probably not for your annual holiday but YES for a special occasion. A professional can create a picture; a work of art which tells your story.

Three reasons to hire a professional photographer.

1. Because they are professional. They are experienced and have the knowledge to anticipate; to know where to stand and what angle to shoot from. They can react within a second to identify and capture that elusive perfect moment. 2. All your guests can enjoy themselves – professional photographers know how to put groups at ease and how to capture everyone without spoiling the fun. You are not relying on Uncle Joe to take the pictures you want. 3. To get the best images possible and so you can be in the pictures.

Choose your Photographer.

The importance of choosing a good photographer for your celebration can’t be stressed enough. Your photos will be one of the tangible keepsakes from the day. Don’t be disappointed ‒ just follow these steps: 1. Search the internet for photographer’s websites or portfolios and get an idea of their style of photography. Find what suits your occasion and establish what YOU want. 2. Establish your budget and phone around to get an idea of price range. Then visit three photographers who fit your budget. 3. Make sure you meet with your photographer before the day to avoid personality clashes. Go with your instincts when you first meet the photographer. 4. For weddings, photographers will often offer an engagement portrait – Do it! This a great opportunity to get to know each other and see how you photograph. Also you can make sure your fiancé is better prepared for the day. 5. Get your booking and package written in a contract, explaining exactly what you are getting for your hard earned money. Make sure the terms are fair to you and the photographer. Photography by Bambi

PIZZA, PIES AND PAVLOVA

There’s nothing wrong with serving pizza, pies and pavlova at a celebration but it’s worth thinking about a menu and choosing according to the occasion.

What are you celebrating?

There are many reasons to celebrate and each occasion can be complemented by food. It’s ok to serve pies and pizza at a footie celebration, but perhaps not for a wedding - unless your nuptials are themed around sport!

How will you be celebrating?

This is the where, when and what of your celebration food. Take account of the type of venue as well as the time of day. Will there be a large crowd standing around mingling or a more formal sit down meal? Cocktails or dinner? Breakfast, lunch, brunch, afternoon tea, picnic or perhaps a barbecue? Your menu choices should take into account seasonal availability and likely weather conditions. Hot soups and puddings in winter, salads and parfaits in summer.

Who is coming?

Friends, family, work colleagues, business associates or perhaps your fiancées family! Are they male, female, or a mix? How old? Are there kids? Will grandma be there? Try to find dishes that will suit most of the group. And don’t forget those with significant dietary restrictions. These could be for religious, ethical or for health reasons. So remember to check with your guests in good time so the menu can accommodate everyone.

Choices, choices, choices!

It’s nice to provide a choice, but for a sit down meal this may not be practical for time and cost reasons. A compromise may be an alternate serve menu, where every other person at a table gets a different dish. Guests can swap with each other at the table if they are served something they don’t like. For a cocktail menu, make sure it is varied. All red meat, all pastries - not a good selection. Add variations - chicken, duck, fish and vegetarian. Perhaps a soup. And even a substantial item to soak up the wine, such as a stir-fry and rice or a pasta dish.

Choose local food...

The Mary Valley and its neighbouring regions produce some fabulous fresh food. An abundance of products - fruit, veg, meat, cheese and chutneys - so make sure your menu incorporates local offerings. If you are catering yourself visit a Mary Valley market so your guests can ‘eat local’. It is worth checking with your venue and caterer to confirm they source their food locally.

Final tip.

If you’re planning a big night, make sure you provide plenty of food for your guests; consider a grazing table with breads, meats and cheeses for later in the evening. Bon Appetite!

GET T ING HOME “Wow! This is some celebration, I hope it never ends.” We all know the saying “all good things must come to an end”, so it doesn’t matter how good the party, the time will come when all your guests must depart. As the host you should ensure arrangements have been made for all your guests to depart in safety. Ensure there is su cient transport for all guests to return home or to their Mary Valley accommodation. Arrangements can always be made to return to the venue to collect a vehicle Offer to take the keys from someone who has become intoxicated and arrange for them to be taken to their accommodation by someone you know is not drinking. Make sure none of your guests drink and drive by offering a selection of non alcoholic beverages. In the Mary Valley we don’t have taxis, but we do have transport to help get your guests home safely. For the safety of your guests and for your peace of mind we recommend you use our transport services.

Celebrate with Mary and make sure you leave with only happy memories.
