THE SHORTLIST EDITION ONE 2020
Welcome
Welcome to the first edition of The Shortlist - a quarterly magazine written especially for incentive travel and event professionals. It’s fair to say that 2020 has not been business as usual. As we re-open our doors to events, The Shortlist will keep you up-to-date with what’s happening across the Sunshine Coast - from the best new bars, hottest event trends, locally made gift ideas and insider tips from our industry’s superstars. With the new international-standard runway now open at Sunshine Coast Airport, additional luxury suites at Spicers Clovelly Estate and more bespoke food experiences than before, we’re looking forward to welcoming groups who want to reconnect, recalibrate and inspire their best performers. Like the rest of the world, we’ve had an opportunity to pause, reflect and truly define our events offering. A key part of this is bringing to life our connection to place, community and local food producers. You’ll see this as a recurring theme in The Shortlist including an interview with Ryan Fitzpatrick, Chef and Co-Founder of The Ohana Group. Kylie Stever of Spicers Retreats also shares her personal experience of visiting the Hinterland and becoming part of its local community and natural environment. Don’t forget to take part in the Sunshine Coast Quiz at the end of the magazine. There’s three questions from this month’s Quizmaster, Josh Donohoe of Creative Tours, who has inside knowledge of our local watering holes. Email through your answers and you could win a pack of goodies from Noosa-based Saya Skincare. Enjoy this inaugural issue and we look forward to your feedback! There’s an abundance of craft breweries on the Sunshine Coast, stretching from Caloundra’s Moffat Beach Brewing Co to Land and Sea Brewery in Noosa. Eumundi Brewing at the Imperial Hotel are also introducing a gin distillery in the coming months and have plans to offer exclusive use for 600 guests. Creative Tours take groups behind the scenes to learn how to brew beer. They also have some very cool pop-up bars, including a vintage mobile caravan, that can be hired for events. creativetours.com.au

Event stylists across the coast are reusing disregarded palm fronds and dried plants in big hanging installations. Nicole at Splash Events says groups want earthy tones that suit the focus on the outdoors for most events on the Coast. splashevents.com.au
Tony from Noosa DMC is seeing hot demand for stand-up paddle yoga on the Noosa River. With the sounds of the birds and water, the river becomes a floating yoga studio. Tony assures us that no experience of either SUP or yoga is required. noosadmc.com.au
TribalLink, an Aboriginal owned cultural experiences company, has joined forces with Saltwater Eco Tours to create a journey through the Mooloolaba canals. Maroochydore city centre has welcomed its first open air rooftop garden bar. Groups can take in views across the cityscape, to the ocean on the east and the Hinterland in the west, whilst devouring cocktails and canapes. There’s a retractable roof that provides shade from sun and rain when needed, and the venue can be hired exclusively for events between 30 to 100 cocktail style (depending on COVID restrictions in place at the time). facebook.com/ therooftopbarsunshinecoast
#7 Australia's premier artisan markets

Food and drink is a big part of the Sunshine Coast business event experience. Here’s a round up of what we’re eating and drinking on the Coast.
#1 Gelato year round
Hello Gelato has just wheeled into town offering locally made treats at events year round, thanks to the Coast’s climate. The specially made bikes can hold up to 300 servings of gelato made locally by Maleny Food Co. Our favourite flavour is salted caramel and hazelnut roche. Dairy free, gluten free and vegan options are available. hellogelato.com.au

#5 Wild and edible plants
Sunny Coast local Nick Blake is the founder of Wild Forage Australia. He calls himself a ‘Foraging Chef’ who supports his peers by supplying them with edible native, wild, and indigenous plants such as wild elderflowers, baby watercress, raspberries and lemon myrtle. Nick only picks what is ordered by restaurants and event caterers, like Ryan Fitzpatrick from The Ohana Group. wildforageaustralia.com.au theohanagroup.com.au
#2 Chocolate and cheese grazing Yes, it’s a thing! The team at Kokopod have created a grazing chocolate, with specially created flavours to combine with cheese. Flavours include lemon myrtle infused dark chocolate with macadamia nuts perfectly paired with cream cheese or goat’s chevre. There are 10 flavours including vegan friendly options. kokopod.com.au
#3 Fruity beers
Brouhaha brewery in Maleny is a must for locals and corporates alike. We love the strawberry rhubarb sour beer that is both dry and sharp. Local strawberries and rhubarb are pureed and added into the fermenter in secondary fermentation. Brouhaha have also developed some very cool experiences for business events including a mobile bar, brewer for the day experience and master classes. Companies can even put their own brand on Brouhaha beer cans, or better yet, create their own company brew. brouhahabrewery.com.au
#4 Fraser Isle Spanner Crabs

You’ll find these sustainably sourced Queensland Spanner Crabs on the menu at some of the Sunshine Coast’s best restaurants and catering companies. Make the dream a reality with First Class Functions and escape to this exclusive luxe tipi on Noosa Beach. Melinda from First Class says it’s one of their most popular offsite event settings as groups can take in the natural magic of the region. That magic includes golden sand beaches, lush Hinterland, Noosa National Park and the Noosa Everglades - one of only two Everglades in the world. More than four walls
A natural choice for companies wanting to recalibrate
16
Fortunately for Spicers Retreats, it seems social distancing and COVID safe events come naturally at their two Sunshine Coast Hinterland properties where privacy, space and exclusivity have long been a drawcard for corporate groups.
“Exclusive use of Tamarind is really popular and well suited to groups of up to 22 people who can have their private villas and come together for wellness activities, team building, fine dining, meetings and executive training.”
Spicers Tamarind Retreat in Maleny, a one-and-a-half-hour drive from Brisbane, has 22 rooms split across 14 private villas, making it popular with board retreats and executive training groups, who seek out time together and time away. Kylie Stever, Group Director of Sales at Spicers Retreats, says the luxury of space and tranquility of the rainforest setting is a no brainer for companies who want to recalibrate after a rocky start to the new decade.
Kylie, who regularly visits Tamarind from Spicer’s head office in Brisbane, says she feels an instant connection to the surrounding community and natural environment. “As soon as you start to drive up the hill towards the Hinterland, you feel a connection to this region. It’s a world away from the hassles of everyday life and that’s why corporate events work so well. Groups can get away from it all to gain a fresh perspective,” she said.
THE SHORTLIST EDITION ONE 2020
“The nearby township of Maleny has an eclectic feel with its quirky and unique shops, restaurants and cafes. Tamarind is part of a strong local community along with nearby food producers like Maleny Dairies. The locals, and our team at Tamarind alike, have an enormous connection and respect for the nearby natural environment too - with Gardner Falls just on our doorstep,” she explains. The Tamarind restaurant and the retreat’s food offering is at the centre of that community connection with fresh ingredients sourced locally. Led by Head Chef Daniel Jarrett, The Tamarind was awarded a Chef Hat in the 2020 National Good Food Guide for its signature sweet, sour, and spicy flavours. Food throughout each corporate event has no resemblance to traditional hotel catering and instead the menu is carefully tailored and bespoke. Kylie also tells us an increasingly popular choice for groups is to spend one night dining at The Tamarind and the other a 15-minute drive away at Spicers Clovelly Estate in nearby Montville. Clovelly offers a French inspired menu at their acclaimed restaurant, The Long Apron - giving groups two vastly different dining experiences. Keeping with the food theme, Tamarind’s purposebuilt cooking school is a winner for team bonding, as small groups work together to create and share a four-course meal. Groups can also learn how to make a decent brew of coffee by working with local baristas, or better yet, brew their own beer at nearby Brouhaha (where you can also put a company name and logo on the beer cans). Yoga classes on the lawn are a popular activity to start the day. You can also arrange photography and art classes on-site and a guided tour of the grounds with an expert horticulturist who will teach groups about the native plants and ingredients grown onsite. With helicopters able to land at Tamarind, small groups can be flown across the Hinterland and up the coast to Fraser Island for a scenic ride like no other. Likewise, helicopters from Brisbane or Sunshine Coast Airport provide the ultimate arrive in style experience.

ARRIVE IN STYLE Arrive in a convoy of deluxe kombi vans from Sunshine Coast Airport. Beyond Experiences say Kombi vans are bright, fun, and beachy - the perfect way for groups to ease into the Coast. LOCAL LUNCH After you’ve checked into the Sofitel Noosa Pacific Resort, head to Peter Kuruvita’s Noosa Beach House Restaurant & Bar for fresh local oysters, Mooloolaba prawns and Moreton Bay bugs. GET ACTIVE A short walk from lunch, groups can take part in a specially created team building challenge. Tony from Noosa DMC says ‘Great Race Noosa Style’ or ‘Beach Olympics’ are perfect half day or full day specially created events to get the heart pumping. WOODLANDS WONDERLAND Gather around the pool at the Sofitel for cocktails and canapes before walking to the Noosa Woods for a magical off-site dinner with fairy lights twinkling on the river, fire twirling and fresh local produce. Melinda at First Class Functions says the woodlands have become a popular alternative to dining on the beach.

The Great Beach Drive ADVENTURE It’s time to head north of Noosa for a fourwheel drive adventure on The Great Beach Drive where you might spot dolphins, whales, turtles, and rare birds. The drive takes in two UNESCO Biosphere Reserves, a World Heritage area, national parks, and Fraser Island - the largest sand island in the world. Noosa DMC say it’s a once in a lifetime experience and we believe them!

MORNING STRETCH Start the day with a pop-up yoga class with healthy breakfast stations on Noosa Main Beach.

Give it a go RECOVERY MORNING After a recovery breakfast on the beach, First Class Functions suggest creating a mini triathlon involving Noosa’s Surf Lifesavers or a guided walk in the National Park. TRY SOMETHING NEW Groups can split between activities to try something new like surf lessons at Coolum Beach or stand up paddle boarding on the Noosa River. LONG LUNCH Let Beyond Experiences create a long lunch in the Macadamia Groves. They work with some of the Coast’s most well-known chefs including Matt Golinski and Peter Kuruvita.
EVENING After this epic day trip, head to the Noosa Boat House for drinks and dinner. Nicole from Splash Events recommends hiring the venue exclusively and theming each of the three levels from nautical, Hamptons and coastal chic.
EASE ANY ACHES Let Ikatan Spa take care of any aches and pains with massage and treatments in their rainforest setting. Katrina at Ikatan says they customise packages depending on a group’s schedule and budget.

Spotlight on
Bringing an ancient concept of togetherness to life with food
“Most of us try to escape our four walls whenever we can thanks to a year of restrictions and lockdowns caused by Covid-19,” - that’s the thoughts of Ryan Fitzpatrick, a Sunshine Coast chef and cofounder of events company The Ohana Group. Ryan spent much of the earlier Queensland lockdown focused on putting together new, immersive food experiences for corporates and organisations who will be looking to reconnect with one another and strategise the way forward.
20
Ryan, and his business partner Rashi, who takes care of the event styling and logistics, says the region is prime to develop its own identity for food experiences. “Food can tell the story of every region in the Sunshine Coast. From the rolling green dairy farms across the Hinterland to wild herbs foraged from the ocean near Noosa; our produce offers a deep, personal and earthy connection to place.” Ryan’s career has indulged his passion for food, foraging, sustainability and the ocean with gigs on luxury and celebrity yachts sailing across Europe, Hawaii and The Pacific Islands (in addition to top Melbourne and Noosa restaurants like The Press Club).
THE SHORTLIST EDITION ONE 2020
He worked with villagers, locals, producers, and foragers to source and create new dishes for guests. In 2018, Ryan returned to Noosa to start something of his own - The Ohana Group - Ohana being the Hawaiian word for extended family. It is this togetherness that Ryan knows board members, corporate groups and staff will seek out in the coming months and years as businesses and organisations face pivotal times ahead. “Nothing connects people together better than food. Our carefully curated experiences on the Sunshine Coast bring visitors together with local food producers from fourth generation beef producers in Maleny to Mooloolaba Fisheries and our many craft beer brewers.”
The storytelling of the region can be experienced with a private glamping retreat in the Glass House Mountains where groups settle under the stars to hear Aboriginal legends, enjoy dance and learn practices from the traditional custodians of the Sunshine Coast - the Kabi Kabi people. Ryan and his team incorporate bush tucker, native ingredients and cooking techniques into a fine dining experience including local whiting cooked in paperbark with cinnamon myrtle or kangaroo fillet with pepper berry and bunya. For those wanting to be closer to the water, The Ohana Group creates a private dining island reached by boat, with cocktails and canapes onboard. Flowing tablecloths, tropical natives and white parasols set the scene as groups are welcomed with a crisp riesling or local craft beer. Ryan and his team serve up spanner crab and beach herb blinis, Noosa scallops with beurre blanc and lemon myrtle, local yellow-fin tuna sashimi with native finger lime ponzu or Mooloolaba prawn remoulade with green apple and champagne vinaigrette. A private sommelier pairs wines whilst the bartenders create cocktails in what is quintessentially the ultimate long lunch. If groups prefer to get active together, there is also a ‘surf and cycle’ option. Starting with a private hot breakfast on one of the region’s many beaches, groups then have the option of taking to the waves with private guides, suited for all levels of ability. After a cold pressed juice, healthy corporates can begin their cycle, either along the coastline or inland to rainforests, cane fields and boutique villages. After all that exercise a cold beer awaits, along with a Mooloolaba tuna poke bowl, or a crisp glass of rosé and grilled local snapper with horiatiki and whipped oregano feta. Any aches and pains can be healed with ice baths, hot stone massages, foot treatments and detoxifying tonics, before retreating to the hotel.

Experiences are also tailor made by Ryan, and his business partner Rashi, whose passion for telling the story of the region through food is unyielding. THE SHORTLIST EDITION ONE 2020

In the
neigHbourhood The undiscovered gem of Buderim
Nestled in the hills behind Sunshine Coast beaches is the lesser known suburb of Buderim. Here you’ll find a quaint town centre, leafy streets, waterfalls, rainforest and locals who enjoy a ‘bush and beach lifestyle’ only a 10-minute drive from Mooloolaba. The area is home to a touch of history too, being the first tourism destination on the Sunshine Coast. Early European settlers harvested much of Buderim’s forests to build crops for ginger, coffee, and bananas. In 1914, a small railway was built to transport the produce to market and in the 1920s, the town became a resort destination with guest houses and spa lodges. Today, two luxury retreats attract corporate groups to Buderim - ‘boho luxe’ Aquila Retreat and Hamptons inspired Malumba Estate. Each property can be hired exclusively, or for larger groups you can book out both properties and travel between them in golf buggies or deluxe kombi vans.
