Solvang “California’s Little Denmark” n 1911, three Danish-American educators discovered a place in the Golden State where land was plentiful and their culture could prosper—and founded Solvang (sunny field in Danish) Only two hours up the coast from Los Angeles, and adjacent to the 1804 Old Mission Santa Inés (now a National Historic Landmark District), Solvang thrived and settlers carried on Danish traditions of language, folk dancing, music and cuisine. Learn more at the not-to-be-missed Elverhoj Museum of History & Art and the Hans Christian Andersen Museum as well as the Solvang Vintage Motorcycle Museum. Be on the lookout for the Wildling Museum celebrating art and nature (opening in Spring 2013). As the 20th century progressed and Solvang’s population grew, more buildings began to reflect the Dan-

ish farm-style architecture—the cross-beamed bindingsvaerk, timbers framing either brick or stucco, handsomely carved eaves and doorways, and roofing of blue-green copper or thatch made of wood shingles cut jagged at the edges. Just as it does in Copenhagen, Denmark’s national symbol the “Little Mermaid” bronze sculpture (in ½ size authorized replica) welcomes visitors at the intersection of Mission Drive and Alisal Road. Windmills of all sizes catch the first and last light throughout the village. Danish tradition holds that the presence of a stork on a rooftop wards off lightning and brings good luck—that continues to smile on Solvang and all its visitors still. After the conclusion of World War II, idyllic Solvang was “discovered” by the media and described as a “spotless Danish village that blooms like a rose” and enticed travelers to experience it for themselves. More to Explore Ballard The smallest of the regions’ towns with a population of 467, Ballard still holds some of the valley’s most treasured gems. A “Little Red Schoolhouse” has been educating young Ballard residents since 1883. Today it’s one of the topperforming schools in Santa Barbara County and the bell still rings to summon students. Plus, it’s home to The Ballard Inn & Restaurant—one of the most romantic B&Bs in the region where delectable wine-country fusion meal are savored. It’s well worth a brief visit to Ballard to see historic homes, churches, a charming miniature donkey farm and petting as well as experience the serenity and charm of a well-preserved country burg.

California history melds with modern-day wine tasting rooms, art galleries and upscale shops in Los Olivos, a picture-perfect country town in the northeast part of the valley (population 1,132). It’s a laid-back place where locals sit on wooden porches and chat with friends and visitors; and most people wear jeans, cowboy boots and casual attire. The town dates back to the 1860s, when the stagecoach route began to pass through. Historic Mattei’s Tavern was built to house and feed those passengers and is currently under a complete redevelopment as a luxury resort. Centered by a flagpole, Victorian homes and businesses cluster nearby around the community hub at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Alamo Pintado Avenue. Vineyards, lavender farms, orchards, ranches and horse trails surround the town. This is a fantastic place to visit for a one-stop wine country experience. Many historic structures hold distinctly modern enterprises art galleries and clothing boutiques. Sip local vintages at a tasting room (choose among more than 30 within a 5-block area) and sample locally grown olive oils (Los Olivos means the olives). The annual Jazz & Olive Festival every June attracts name performers and creative olivecentric cuisine from local chefs. Dine at a casual café or gourmet restaurant. Shop for contemporary art and locally made gifts—and discover special annual events such as the Quick Draw Artists Festival (August), Day in the Country (October) and Olde-Fashioned Christmas (December.)

Santa Ynez In the vintage township of Santa Ynez (population 4,418), it’s sometimes hard to tell if it’s the year 2013 or the late 1880’s with the period-style false-front building facades housing shops, saloons, feed stores, and places with horses hitched to posts in the front. However, this rather sophisticated cowboy town also boasts plenty of conveniences for modern-day trail riders. A variety of restaurants serve up delicious options for diners, from casual pancakes and waffles (beloved by locals) to steaks and seafood, Italian fare, LatinMexican fusion cuisine and high-end locavore feasts. Modern shops and galleries line streets with horse-shoe embedded crosswalks. Don’t miss the Santa Ynez Valley H istorical Society Museum and Parks-Janeway Carriage House for a fascinating dose of Old West heritage and myriad events year-round. The Chumash Casino Resort is adjacent to the township with 24/7 gaming, live entertainment, dining and a luxurious hotel. Old Santa Ynez Day every June is just one wonderful time to visit, when the town celebrates its heritage with a street fair, parade and country-western entertainment. Cyclists gravitate to Santa Ynez as well for the world-class training center, cycling tours or just the chance to ride a bike along serene country roads—there’s plenty to see and do in the town that gave the Valley its name (Saint Agnes in English.)

Points of Interest There are so many things to see, do, experience and taste throughout the Santa Ynez Valley, plan to stay an extra day or two. Arranged by location, here’s a sampling of just some of the most popular attractions as well as farm stands (marked with symbol {

} below and on the fold-out map). Be sure to call for address, open/closing times

Buellton

Los Alamos Surrounded by ranches, farms and vineyards at the northern “entry” to the Santa Ynez Valley, Los Alamos (population 1,890) is located at the junction of US Highway 101 and State Route 135--the main thoroughfare known as Bell Street. It’s only seven blocks long yet reflects as much Old West heritage as any small town on California’s Central Coast. Founded in 1876, two ranchers each donated part of their land to create the town site. Named Los Alamos (Spanish for “the cottonwoods) that still grace the area, it looks and feels like an 1880s stagecoach and train stop— fortunately both have been preserved as the Union Hotel & Saloon and the Depot Antique Mall & Pub today. Other lodgings include two motels and a Victorian-style Bed & Breakfast. Buildings old and new house art galleries, oneof-a-kind shops, wine tasting rooms and restaurants for every type of diner from locavore to carnivore. In September, Los Alamos Old Days honors the town's 1876 founding with a weekend celebration including a parade—an excellent time to wrangle a visit with free fun for the whole family.

Buellton (population 4,828) is an important gateway to the Santa Ynez Valley. It straddles both sides of US Highway 101 (north-south) at State Route 246 (eastwest), and from this thriving hub, you have easy access to all regional destinations. Buellton provides essential travel/visitor needs—lodging, shops, service stations, grocery stores—plus lots of extras, including a range of restaurants, serving everything from tacos and pancakes to sushi and western-style grilled steaks, a state-of-theart wine making facility that also serves as a restaurant and tasting room as well as two regional craft breweries—and be sure to note that Buellton Brewfest (May) and Bruegala (October) celebrate suds at River View Park. Before US Highway 101 was built, the Pacific Coast Highway (now Avenue of Flags) traversed the town. Starting in 1924, Buellton’s Pea Soup Andersen’s Restaurant lured travelers off the highway with tasty split pea soup. If you dine there, climb upstairs to view vintage photos in the Buellton Historical Society’s free History Room on the second floor. The Oscar-winning 2004 wine-themed road-trip movie Sideways was filmed in various locations around the Santa Ynez Valley and featured some iconic venues—a waitress in a restaurant? Check out Hitching Post II. The motel with the windmill? Days Inn. Funny-looking birds? Head over to Ostrich Land. They’re all in Buellton!

Personifying the rugged tradition of the Valley’s western heritage, the Branquinho family of Los Alamos (three generations are pictured on page 5) lives “the cowboy way” every day—rodeo, ranching, farming, raising horses and teaching all ages to rope and ride for competition and pleasure. Caught in a rare, quiet moment in the barn are patriarch John Branquinho and Casey, one of his and wife Brandy’s three sons.

Western & Cultural Traditions

A

The past is very much a part of the present in Solvang and the Santa Ynez Valley. rts and cultural traditions play important roles—from the western roots of Los Alamos, Santa Ynez, Los Olivos, Buellton

and Ballard—each community has its own authentic personality including colorful histories of ranching, agriculture, and equestrian heritage. The area also proudly embraces its Native American, Spanish and Mexican roots. Discover the Valley’s multi-cultural heritage on vibrant display in Santa Ynez at the Santa Ynez Valley Historical Museum & Carriage House, with eight rooms of intriguing memorabilia from the Chumash Indians through 20th-century days including the largest collection of horse-drawn vehicles west of the Mississippi. The western way also presents itself in Los Alamos at the Historical Display at the Los Alamos Gallery as well the Depot Mall; the last surviving train station of the Pacific Coast narrow-gauge railway, now an antique emporium and wine pub. The Santa Ynez Valley is recognized throughout the equestrian world for its impressive horse ranches emphasizing quarter horses, thoroughbred and Arabian breeds, as well as world-renowned training, breeding and veterinary facilities. Discover ways to saddle up and ride like a vaquero (California cowboy) on page 31. Solvang was founded in 1911 by Danish-Americans with a vision of a place to honor their Scandinavian traditions. Soak up Solvang’s background at the Elverhøj Museum of History & Art in rooms brimming with historic photos, artifacts, arts, crafts and period pieces. Docents periodically dress in authentic Danish costumes to create living history and rotating exhibits throughout the year stimulate the senses. The Hans Christian Andersen Museum honors the multi-talented Danish father of the modern fairy tale. A bronze statue of Andersen graces nearby Solvang Park. Solvang’s Danish provincial-style architecture reflects its roots including treasures such as Bethania Lutheran Church and the Little Mermaid bronze sculpture. At 436 Alisal Road, a 1/3-size replica of Copenhagen’s famous 17th-century Rundetaarn (Round Tower) is nestled behind one of the village’s four large windmills. Take a moment to relax on the sladerbænken (gossip

bench) located at 1518 Mission Drive. Don’t miss the 1804 Old Mission Santa Inés, a National Historic Landmark District and the Mission Mills State Historic Park (being developed by the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation). Solvang’s Vintage Motorcycle Museum pays homage to twowheeled wonders. Solvang’s world-famous chiming carillon clock tower atop the building at 486 First Street plays seasonal tunes—and serves as a reminder that there is always plenty of time to relax here. Art is a strong thread woven into the rich, textured cultural fabric of the Santa Ynez Valley. A vibrant year-round arts community thrives here with exhibitions, events, entertainment, museums and galleries galore. The Wildling Museum (previously in Los Olivos and relocating to Solvang in 2013) is where art and nature meet and is dedicated to presenting and preserving American wilderness art with engaging seasonal exhibitions, nature-related art classes, field trips, films and lectures—and is the sponsor of the annual Santa Ynez Valley Artists’ Studio Tour each autumn. Numerous art shops and collectives grace the region including the Thomas Kincaid Gallery in Solvang. St. Mark’s-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church was founded in 1943 and relocated to its current Arts & Crafts-style building in Los Olivos in 1977 serving as a community center for more than 40 non-profit groups offering a range of spiritual, musical and artistic programs. (See listings on page 16 for more information and cultural points of interest).

Planted, nurtured and harvested with exceptional care, local grapes are lovingly crafted into awardwinning wines that are sipped and savored world-wide. Wine tasting and touring is a memorable, unique and definitely not-to-be-missed experience here in Solvang and the Santa Ynez Valley. is one of four distinct American Viticultural Areas (AVA)—also known as wine appellations—in Santa Barbara County’s vast wine country. The other three AVAs are Santa Maria Valley, Sta. (Santa) Rita Hills and Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara (tucked in the east end of Santa Ynez Valley) with several other designations under governmental review. Together, these four comprise 23,000+ acres of grape vineyards that annually produce more than a million cases of wine—including popular Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah, but also top-notch Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Cabernet Sauvignon, Viognier and dozens of other varietals. The unusual east-west orientation of the area’s coastal mountains creates transverse valleys that funnel cool Pacific Ocean air and fog inland during the late afternoon and evening. The resulting hot sunny days and cool nights are a winning combination for both wine grapes and wine tasters. The Oscar-winning 2004 movie Sideways shone a bright spotlight on the Central Coast wine scene and spurred visitors to explore the region. Wine tasting events, wine-maker dinners and more abound throughout the year—make note of Taste of Solvang (March); Santa Barbara County Vintners’ Festival (April); St. Mark’s Cellar Classic Auction of Rare & Fine Wines (June); Santa Ynez Valley Wine Collectors Month (September); Celebration of Harvest (October); and Solvang Wine About (December). For a list of tasting rooms and wine bars participating in this publication, see the Wine Tasting Guide on page 56.) anta Ynez Valley

Hit the wine trails or design your own itinerary or sign up with a local tour company for a professionally guided tour in a limousine, jeep, van or private sedan. The locally-owned and operated Stagecoach Company Wine Tours and The Grapeline Wine Country Shuttle offer daily wine-tasting excursions or tour/taste by bicycle with Santa Barbara Wine Country Cycling Tours.

On-site vineyard tasting rooms range from rustic converted barns to lavish Mediterranean-style villas. Bridlewood Estate Winery blends rustic, Spanish-style architecture with a modern, artisan winery in a former Arabian horse ranch in Santa Ynez. Since 1983, Buttonwood Farm just outside of Solvang has a 39-acre sustainably managed vineyard planted for Bordeaux and Rhone style wines and a lively tasting room. Foley Estates Vineyard, also in Sta. Rita Hills appellation, is home to a 3,500- square-foot tasting room and event center with spectacular vistas of mountain ranges and oak-studded hills and sister facilities Firestone Vineyard as well as Lincourt Winery offer exceptional on-premises opportunities for sampling premier vintages.

A landscape teeming with tales of romance.

Sometimes, everything comes together beautifully. In one place. On The American Riviera® with European charm, overlooking a California coast facing south. Where restaurants, museums and theaters reside under a skyline of red tiled roofs. And walking, hiking and biking take you far beyond the range of any car. There’s only one place like this, Santa Barbara. This is a place to love. And a place where life’s most romantic moments will always live. YOUR STORY BEGINS AT SANTABARBAR ACA.COM/SY
