WHAT, WHEN & WHY:

Welcome To THE SANTA YNEZ VALLEY

Two hours north of Los Angeles, and a scenic four-hour drive south of San Francisco, the Santa Ynez Valley is home to six distinct communities in California’s Central Coast region. With more than 100 wineries, incredible food, special events and an authentic, relaxed vibe, it’s no wonder so many friends, families and couples converge here to sip, savor, and soak up all the valley has to offer. With so much to do, planning the perfect itinerary can be overwhelming. We’ve taken out the guess work to provide you with a Top 10 list of things you must do to treat yourself to an unforgettable experience in the Santa Ynez Valley. 1. WINE COUNTRY

The Santa Ynez Valley is famous for its wineries. With a unique, transverse mountain range that funnels cool air from the Pacific Ocean, our micro-climates and terrains result in one of the most diverse grape growing regions in the world. Take a day to explore the wineries and see the vineyards firsthand.

2. TAKE A SELFIE IN SOLVANG

No trip to the Santa Ynez Valley is complete without a visit to Solvang. This quaint little village is famous for its Danish bakeries and architecture and filled with photo-ops. Perfect the art of the selfie in front of the little red clog or one of the town’s many windmills.

3. CULINARY CRAVINGS

There are so many great places to dine in the Santa Ynez Valley it can be hard to choose! Italian food aficionados will be pleased to find a handful of eateries serving up Italian favorites. Lovers of traditional American cuisine are well catered for with top-notch sandwiches and classic American steaks. If you’re looking for something with an eclectic vibe, the town of Los Alamos boasts innovative flavors, while the towns of Ballard and Los Olivos continue to offer romantic, candle-lit fine dining options.

4. CRAFT BEER

If you can drag yourself away from the wineries, why not sample some of the superb local craft beers? From sours to stouts, three major breweries in the area offer award-winning brews sure to please a wide spectrum of beer connoisseurs.

5. TAKE IN A LOCAL EVENT

2020 SANTA YNEZ VALLEY DESTINATION GUIDE

From food-driven to family friendly, the Santa Ynez Valley hosts a number of events to bring everyone together. Regular events include painting in the vineyard at various wineries, kid crafts at local museums, and live music in the evenings on heated patios. Visit from September through December for some special events that celebrate each town’s unique history.

6. IMMERSE YOURSELF IN LOCAL CULTURE

Drop in and visit one the Valley’s museums. Discover local history and lore at the Elverhøj Museum of History and Art and The Santa Ynez Valley Historical Museum, or pop into Wildling Museum to appreciate works of art that draw inspiration from nature. If you’re looking for something a little more niche, find vintage and rare motorcycles at the Solvang Vintage Motorcycle Museum, be dazzled by fairytales at the Hans Christian Anderson Museum, or feast your eyes on one of the west coast’s largest petroliana collections at the Mendenhall Museum.

7. DISCOVER YOUR HOME AWAY FROM HOME

1.

Seeking something different from your hotel stay? Santa Ynez Valley hotels offer a more intimate and distinctly local experience. With over 30 unique lodging properties, the Valley has a price and style fit for everyone.

8. ENJOY THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Need some fresh air? There’s no better way to clear your mind and relax than getting out and enjoying some of the local countryside. Figueroa Mountain is a great place to unwind and enjoy a picnic in the glorious California sunshine. Or if you’re feeling energetic, take a stroll through the adjacent Sedgwick Reserve by appointment, where volunteer staff guides you through the local terrain. If a family picnic is what you have in mind, head over to Nojoqui Falls Park down Alisal Road.

WELCOME TO

LOS OLIVOS Los Olivos is named after a nearby ranch made up of 5,000 olive trees.

LOS OLIVOS WINE MERCHANT AND CAFÉ

CALIFORNIA HISTORY MELDS WITH MODERN-DAY WINE TASTING rooms, art galleries and upscale shops in this picture-perfect country town in the northeast part of the valley. Centered by an iconic WWI memorial flagpole monument, Victorian homes and businesses cluster nearby around the community hub at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Alamo Pintado Avenue. Vineyards, lavender farms, orchards, ranches and horse trails surround Los Olivos. It’s a laid-back place where locals sit on wooden porches and chat with friends and visitors. In the early 1860s, the town was a welcome stagecoach stop on the route 20

2020 SANTA YNEZ VALLEY DESTINATION GUIDE

that ran from San Francisco to San Diego. County Historical Landmark Mattei’s Tavern, which still stands today, was built in 1887 to house and feed those passengers. Don’t be deceived by the Victorian vibe because behind the historic doors the offerings are distinctly modern and sophisticated - elegant clothing and jewelry boutiques, antiques, art galleries, and gourmet dining. And then there’s the wine tasting - and world-class wine tasting. Sip local vintages at a tasting room - choose among more than 30 within a 5-block area. Los Olivos has something to offer the most discriminating of visitors.

TOP PICKS

GUEST EDITOR

Meet Irene Salas, curator-extraordinaire, globetrotter, and owner of The Fabric Merchant and Company. A recent move from Santa Fe brought Ms. Salas to the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley, where she set up shop with her elegant collection of hand-hewn goods, vintage textiles, linen by the yard, jewelry, clothing, and more. She also brought along over 30 years of international buying, retail, and design experience with textiles, couture fabrics, and home furnishings. When not out in the field discovering another treasured collection, you'll find this passionate proprietress in the store consulting with customers about custom projects and musing about her travels and the amazing heartfelt connections she's made with artisans all over the world. 2920 Grand Ave. • 505.489.3300 • thefabricmerchant.store ECO-INSPIRED I adore spending time with my "fairy" up in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains near Truchas Peak in New Mexico and watching her ecodye textiles for the store. I love wrapping up in her cashmere scarves or adding one of her subtly printed pillows to a bedding mix.

PASS IT ON Wherever I land, be it Mexico, Peru, France, or Italy, I find myself exploring the art of the people. I cherish the experience of acquiring something that, like an African mud cloth I used to reupholster this wingback chair, has probably passed through many loving hands.

BIEN NACIDO AND SOLOMON HILLS

LOCAL LIBATIONS

Visitors enjoy a delectable pour in the Los Olivos tasting room; Tasting Room Manager Jason Villalobos; Four of the many award-winning vintages produced by Bien Nacido.

Anyone familiar with Santa Barbara County wines knows the magic words “Bien Nacido”, the name of the renowned vineyard located in the Santa Maria American Viticultural Area (AVA). It’s also the name of the venerable Bien Nacido & Solomon Hills Tasting Room in Los Olivos. In 1973, brothers Bob and Steve Miller, whose family had been farming the Central Coast for 100 years, planted 300 acres of cool-weather-loving Burgundian varieties Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. These many years later, grapes from the acclaimed vineyard — now 900 acres and including Syrah as well — remain in tremendous demand. Consistently highly-rated varietal wines born of the vineyard are available at the tasting room in Los Olivos, a

relaxed, pedestrian-friendly town focused on wine, food, antiques, art and good times in the heart of Santa Barbara wine country. Novices can gain wine knowledge in the tasting room, experts will find benchmarks of the Santa Maria AVA style, and on Saturdays, everyone can enjoy music that enhances the experience. If you’ll be gathering with friends, consider reserving the back room, which seats 15, for a private tasting. With a pedigree that includes the Ritz-Carlton Bacara, new Tasting Room Manager Jason Villalobos is infusing the tasting experience with a full dose of Southern California energy and style.

LOS OLIVOS GENERAL STORE ONE STOP (TREASURE) SHOP

Meet CHRISTINA LARNER, artist, winemaker, mom, and proprietor of the retail cornerstone, LOS OLIVOS GENERAL STORE. We recently caught up with her in the store, and below is what she had to say about a modern take on a classic concept, juggling roles, her happy place, and more. Everything Old is New Again

In addition to owning the Los Olivos General Store, my family owns Larner Vineyard and Winery near town. In 2012, we were looking for a location to sell our wine and were lucky to find the historic Los Olivos Garage space. It was founded in 1904 and was the oldest active gas station in California, with 97 years of continuous service. The general store theme was inspired by an old general store building on our family's property. We decided to create a modern interpretation of the traditional general stores of the past. The Larner wine tasting room is adjacent to the store so customers can shop and sip. We're always bringing in new merchandise, so the store continues to feel fresh. This year we've been focusing on wellness and positivity by carrying items such as aromatherapy, CBD tinctures, and inspirational books. We still have our practical staple products as well, such as artisan food products, cookbooks, and home goods.

Goal Tending

Our goal is to create a vibrant shopping experience with plenty of unique and eclectic gifts alongside beautiful artwork. Our customers often comment on how good the store smells – thanks to our love for candles, local lavender, and all things that smell good! Customers should also expect to find locally made products such as honey, olive oil, artwork, and skincare items. I am also excited to display and sell my original paintings, made with wine, in the store. We’re a great place for visitors and locals to find the perfect gift.

Role-Playing

I take pride in my work but try to be flexible and not too hard on myself if I can't be the perfect boss, mom, artist, wife - I just do the best I can. I'm lucky and grateful to have a very talented store manager who has worked with me for over six years now. Her creativity is evident in the store merchandising, product selection, and overall store vibe. And, as anyone who has shopped in our store knows, her customer service skills are top-notch!

Owner and artist, Christina Larner stands in front of one of her unique wine paintings.

Home Sweet Store

Los Olivos is my happy place. Beyond the small-town charm, there is a great sense of community here. I love that I can say hello to people I know every day. We actually sell shirts, hats, and mugs that say "Happy Place Los Olivos!"

A Win-Win

I feel best about carrying products that give back to charities or provide jobs for people in need. We are proud to carry an eyewear collection that provides reading glasses to people in need, candles that give to St. Jude Children's Hospital and to support a company that employs people with special needs. Also, as a small family-owned business, we like to support similar companies – especially if they are local.

VISIT SOLVANG AND EXPERIENCE AN AUTHENTIC TASTE OF Denmark - literally and figuratively. This Danish-inspired village, the largest of the Santa Ynez Valley towns, known for its old-world European charm, hospitality, and history, also boasts a very au courant food, wine, craft beer, shopping and art gallery scene. Solvang, which means "sunny fields" in Danish, was founded in 1911 by three Danish-American educators who were in search of a place on California's central coast where land was plentiful, and their culture 30

could prosper. Situated on 9,000 acres of land just adjacent to the historic 1804 Old Mission Santa InĂŠs, settlers came and continued to carry on Denmark's traditions of language, folk dancing, music, and cuisine. In January of 1947, the Saturday Evening Post proclaimed Solvang a "spotless Danish village that blooms like a rose in California's charming Santa Ynez Valley," and put Solvang on the map as the "Danish Capital of America." In the following years, Danish provincial style ruled new downtown

Olsen's Danish Village Bakery & Coffee Shop ddd EVER SINCE Bent and Susy Olsen opened Olsen's Danish Village Bakery & Coffee Shop in 1970, visitors to Solvang have been making sweet memories. When a tourist recounts a wonderful bakery they once encountered on a trip to Solvang - and they frequently remember exactly what they brought home - they are almost always describing Olsen’s Bakery. Located on the main street through town, the folding glass doors across the front of the shop give it an unmistakable European ambiance. Indoor and sidewalk seating provide the complete konditori experience as friendly servers bring your pastries to your table. Part of the charm is making a selection from the dozens and dozens of possibilities displayed in the sparkling glass showcases. Everything is of the finest quality, authentically Danish, and indescribably delicious. Order a traditional European breakfast of coffee, juice, hard roll with butter, cheese and jam, along with a flaky Danish pastry. Or choose one (or two) of Bent’s truly exquisite petits fours to enjoy with a cup of coffee. (If you are not familiar with the rich ganache and almond goodness of a Sarah Bernhardt, get acquainted with her namesake immediately.) The lavish expression of traditional Danish baking at its finest is no accident. On most days baker/owner Bent Olsen is working alongside his long-time assistant bakers in the on-site bakery, just as he has for the past 50 years - baking is in Bent’s genes. He grew up on the island Aerø in southern Denmark, where his ancestors established a bakery in 1890. After high school, he attended a Swedish baking academy, graduating as a pastry chef. He then completed the four-year apprenticeship required in Denmark to become a professional baker. Bent immigrated to Solvang in 1965 and met his wife, Susy, a native of Italy, in a class at Santa Barbara City College. They married in the mid-1960s and opened Olsen’s Danish Village Bakery & Coffee Shop in Solvang on August 1, 1970. Take a close look at the framed articles, photos, and awards displayed on the walls for a fairly complete mini-history of the Olsen family's past half century. The dedication and passion to Scandinavian pastry and baking standards shine through. In one article Bent declared, “Baking is my life.” The energy behind that statement is still strong. “We have no plans to retire, we love our bakery,” Bent said recently. “I’m happiest when I’m in the bakery every morning.” 34

A DAY IN SOLVANG

J

Breakfast and Lunch Daily 8:30 - 3:00

Morning

Start your day with breakfast at one of Solvang's authentic Danish bakeries. Or head to a restaurant and try the ever-popular aebleskiver - deliciously light and airy Danish pancake balls dusted with powdered sugar and served with raspberry jam. Meander around the pedestrian-friendly village to enjoy flower-lined streets as well as picturesque architecture, including windmills, a tower that plays seasonal tunes plus statues of Hans Christian Andersen and the Little Mermaid. Be sure to look for ornamental wooden storks perched on roofs - they are considered good luck in Denmark and Solvang, too!

local art scene Pavlov Art Gallery offers an exceptional selection of contemporary artwork by acclaimed local artist Chris Pavlov. Born in former Yugoslavia to parents who were both medical doctors, Pavlov developed a natural passion for seeking to understand the world around him and the human psyche. In his life, artwork has become his outlet and tool to explore the principles of nature and express the knowledge he’s gained from his degrees in psychology and philosophy. Natura Naturata (above) is a perfect example of this, as it examines the nature of nature. This painting alludes to the mind-body duality and also to the anticipated superstring theory that may unify the four fundamental forces of physics. In addition to original paintings, the gallery offers a large collection of Pavlov’s fine art prints as well as ceramic work, jewelry and glass work by various guest artists. Pavlov Art Gallery is a compelling space where beauty, art, and philosophy - the love of wisdom - collide and thrive.

FIRST AND OAK

MICHELIN TAKES NOTE

2019 MICHELIN PLATE

First & Oak opened with big ambitions. Now, the elegant, intimate and supremely customercentric restaurant in Solvang’s Mirabelle Inn has been recognized with the only 2019 Michelin Plate award in the Santa Ynez Valley. The famous restaurant guide described First and Oak as “a deliciously old-school restaurant that is coming into its own with ambitious contemporary cuisine…created by a chef who boasts a background in some globally acclaimed kitchens.” Guests are invited to create their own prix-fixe menu by selecting three, four or five courses from a variety of categories. Starting with the best-available seasonal organic ingredients, the kitchen presents carefully considered, meticulously plated selections full of vibrant flavors, often including a single ingredient prepared in numerous ways offering multiple textures, consistencies and flavors. “If we are preparing carrots, we are not going to prepare just roasted carrots,” says proprietor and sommelier, Jonathan Rosenson. “Our goal is to prepare the best carrots you’ve ever had. It’s not about over-manipulation, but rather, the process of creating something exciting and packed with flavor. We want to serve food that you could never replicate on your own.” The Michelin Guide also referred to the restaurant’s “masterful desserts.” Those might include a holiday season pumpkin crème caramel with roasted pumpkin, candied pumpkin brittle and a ginger-bay leaf anglaise presented table-side. tastes. Sample exceptional wines, award-winning craft brews, and experience a refreshing variety of cuisine, prepared with the freshest local bounty. There are plenty of places to stay and lots of ways to play in Buellton. Take a stroll through the Santa Ynez Botanic Garden and learn about the area’s native plants or visit one of the West Coast’s largest petroliana collections. The more you explore, the more you’ll discover about this “under the radar” unassuming city. Where else can you feed an ostrich, play a round of golf and visit a distillery all in one day?

Walking Tall AT OSTRICHLAND USA

f feeding ostriches isn’t already on your bucket list, add it now and head straight to OstrichLand USA. This 33acre working ranch, home to over 100 ostriches and emus, is a reasonably inexpensive thrill at $5 per adult and $2 for children under 12 for admission and $1 per bowl of feed. Guests enter through the charming gift shop, which is curated with a unique assortment of ostrich-related goods - feathered fans, ostrich leather bags, ostrich jerky, ostrich plush toys, hats, various curios, jewelry, tee shirts, and of course, when in season, ostrich eggs. There’s even a cabinet full of ostrich eggs autographed by famous visitors like Billy Bob Thornton and Ray Romano. Once you’ve made your way through the gift shop, the real adventure begins. Grab a bowl of feed and head out to the main attraction - the big birds! Once you approach the fence get ready because the heard comes in hot. Hang onto the bowl and let the feeding frenzy begin. Although the initial interaction with these enormous creatures can be a little intimidating, just follow the guidelines and enjoy the thrill. For a slightly more subdued experience meander down the path to meet the smaller and relatively more docile “cousins” of the ostrich family - the emus. These unique creatures are all at once majestic, bizarre, graceful, comical and definitely worth the stop. OSTRICHLAND USA • 610 E HIGHWAY 246 • 805.686.9696 • OSTRICHLANDUSA.COM

WELCOME TO

SANTA YNEZ

Experience the relaxed smalltown charm, natural beauty and cultural history of this Valley town.

FORFRIENDS INN

IN THE VINTAGE township of Santa Ynez, with its period-style falsefront building facades, feed stores and random horses hitched to posts, it’s sometimes hard to tell if it’s 2018 or 1884. However, this somewhat sophisticated cowboy town boasts plenty of conveniences for modernday trail riders. The streets, with horse shoe-embedded crosswalks, are lined with a variety of clothing boutiques, home decor stores, galleries, restaurants and even an original California honky-tonk saloon. If you have 58

an appetite, this is the place to be, as the dining options range from classic burgers, pancakes and waffles, to steaks, seafood, regional Italian fare, Latin fusion and locavore cuisine. The Chumash Casino Resort, adjacent to the township, offers 24/7 gaming, live entertainment, dining and luxurious accommodations. Cyclists gravitate to Santa Ynez for a world-class training center, tours or just the chance to ride a bike along quiet country roads. There’s plenty to see, do and eat in the town that gave the Valley its name.

Brothers serves a variety of prime steaks and offers other classics like New Zealand rack of lamb, pork rib chops and roast chicken, all cooked on a mesquitefired grill.

A SIP AND A STEAK

Brothers has the right wine for any dish on the menu. Matt recommends the local Andrew Murray Vineyards Roasted Slope to accompany their prime filet mignon in Port-wine-Stilton sauce, served with caramelized-onion potato gratin.

SEAFOOD

The brothers are just as serious about seafood as they are about meat, and they work with trusted seafood purveyors to acquire the best for their menu every day.

GRAND FINALES

Longtime pastry chef Stephanie Jackson’s made-from-scratch desserts always include a bread pudding, like the bananas Foster version, perfect with her homemade brown-butter ice cream. Don’t miss the signature mud pie and seasonal fruit pies, too.

LOCAL FLAVOR: BROTHERS AT THE RED BARN

Step into History: Over a century old, the Red Barn retains its historic charm, including in the storied bar. When it was added in the 1960s, local ranchers were invited to burn their brands into the walls and the ceiling. AS JEFF AND MATT NICHOLS edge toward 25 years as valley restaurateurs, their landmark dining room and bar continue to attract loyal locals, ranchers and winemakers, along with lucky visitors who find their way here. Oh how I love POTTERY - old and new. There is something about the various shapes, colors, and textures that I am so passionate about.

“A love of design has always been a part of me - from childhood on, it has defined who I am and formed who I have become.” - Dawn de Bartolo

2.

Nature has always been my muse when it comes to design. Each season I pull inspiration from perfect elements like branches, mosscovered oak trees, and thistle flowers dried to pale shades. And the magic of stones calls to me, especially in the work of my favorite local jewelry maker, SHOP GIRL DESIGNS. Her work, with its organic form and texture, truly captures my heart.

3.

FINCH & FERN is more than just a home and garden store. We offer interior and landscape design services and specialize in working with what you have, what you cherish, and creating new spaces that perfectly define you.

TOP PICKS

GUEST EDITOR Guest editor Dawn de Bartolo, owner of Santa Ynez home and garden boutique Finch & Fern, shares some of her favorite things, from local dining spots and musical muses to swoon-worthy vintage goods and au courant finds. This designer is always on the hunt for treasured pieces, both old and new, and like a highly coveted Bordeaux, her signature style is a masterful blend of both.

4.

Well, with so many lovely places right here in Santa Ynez, it’s hard to say which is my favorite, but SY KITCHEN is definitely at the top of my list. Their perfect pasta dishes make my taste buds dance.

Like my design sensibility, my musical taste is diverse and ever-evolving. Music can accessorize the mood. I'm inspired and intrigued by INTERNATIONAL MUSIC, with its unique compositions, instruments, and different languages. Currently on repeat: Nouvelle Vague. Favorite Song: In A Manner Of Speaking

6.

There’s no better feeling than walking into a store that inspires creativity, and believe me, FINCH & FERN is filled to the rafters with inspiration! Sometimes it’s just about discovering a piece of pottery for that empty spot on a shelf, or perhaps scoring a pair of trending chairs that update and transform the whole look and feel of your dining room.

SURROUNDED BY RANCHES, FARMS AND VINEYARDS AT THE northern “entry” to the Santa Ynez Valley, Los Alamos is located at the junction of US Highway 101 and State Route 135. Bell Street, the main thoroughfare, is only seven blocks long yet reflects as much Old West heritage as any small town on California’s Central Coast. Founded in 1876 and named in Spanish for “the cottonwoods” that still grace the area - it looks and feels vintage yet boasts a burgeoning food, wine, arts & antique scene. One-of-a-kind lodging includes a Victorian-style 66

A BRIEF

HISTORY OF

WINE IN THE SYV

HORSES AND CATTLE were once the main cash crops of the Santa Ynez Valley, a legacy of the Spanish rancho days. But when visionary winemakers began planting vinifera and exploring the area's varied terrain in the 1970s, a sea of change was quickly afoot. Oh sure, you can still see thoroughbred horses running in green pastures here, as well as lavender farms and some of the best organic produce anywhere. But these days wine is king - and queen and president and prime minister, too. Vines flourish from the valley floor to mountainside plots 1,500 feet above it. Tasting rooms and restaurants in the towns attract visitors from around the world, who come to taste spectacular wine and enjoy this gorgeous part of the planet.

PC: SB Winery 1782: Father Junípero Serra plants the area’s first grapevine cuttings, establishing mission vineyards in what is now the city of Santa Barbara.

1964: UC Davis horticulturalists Uriel Nielson and Bill De Mattei establish the county’s first commercial vinifera vineyards in the Santa Maria Valley. Ten years later, major Northern California producers are purchasing their Chardonnay grapes.

1962: Pierre Lafond opens Santa Barbara Winery, the first winery since Prohibition.

WINE BY THE NUMBERS

L A Y OF T H E LAND

27,000 Approximate acreage under vineyards in SB County 200+ Number of wineries in SB County 50+ Number of grape varieties grown here $121.3 million Value of the grapes harvested in SB County in 2019 $1.7 billion Estimated annual economic impact of the industry, Santa Barbara County’s most valuable agricultural segment

Most mountain ranges run in a north-south direction, but the coastal San Raphael and Santa Ynez mountains that form the Santa Ynez Valley and the greater Santa Barbara County wine region run east to west. As such, they act like a funnel for cool air and fog from the Pacific Ocean, creating myriad microclimates at various elevations suitable for a wide range of varietal grapes. Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and other grapes that PC: Robbie Kaye like hot days and cold nights predominate in the eastern region, while consistent, cool weather to the west favors such Burgundy varietal grapes as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Both regions provide long growing seasons and extended “hang time” for the fruit, allowing there sugars and acids to develop slowly and fully, essential for great wines. PHOTO: GEORGE ROSE

1973: Brothers Stephen and Bob Miller plant Bien Nacido Vineyard, today one of the valley’s most-famous and enduring sources of superb coolweather grapes.

2004: The wine-centric romantic comedy Sideways puts Santa Ynez Valley wine country on the map for millions and gives local Pinot Noirs, in particular, their place in the Hollywood sun.

1983: The Santa Barbara Vintners Association is founded in a decade that sees epic growth in terms of vineyards and new wineries.

SANTA MARIA VALLEY AVA (1981): Fog and wind keep temperatures cool, especially in the western part of this near-coast AVA, Santa Barbara’s first. Known for cool-weather-loving Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, it also produces excellent Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Nebbiolo and Cabernet Franc.

STA. RITA HILLS AVA (2001): The odd spelling of “Saint” is the result of a settlement involving a Chilean AVA of the same name. Slightly warmer than the adjacent Santa Maria AVA. This is Pinot Noir country, which makes up nearly two-thirds of the vineyard acreage, followed by Chardonnay.

BALLARD CANYON AVA (2013): Windy, foggy, and with wildly shifting temperatures, Ballard Canyon occupies a middle ground between the coolest and warmest parts of the valley. The Rhône grape Syrah rules here, accounting for more than half the planted acreage, and local Syrahs are every bit the equal of the French counterparts.

SANTA YNEZ VALLEY AVA (1983): The largest AVA in SB County contains four sub-AVAs. Predominantly east-west oriented, it is cut by hills that produce numerous microclimates. World-class Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grow in the cooler western part of the AVA, while Rhône and Bordeaux varieties thrive in the warmer, eastern areas.

HAPPY CANYON AVA (2009): The most eastern growing region is also the warmest, with hills reducing ocean breezes and fog. Cabernet Sauvignon and warm-weather styles of Sauvignon Blanc predominate, with extensive plantings of Syrah as well.

LOS OLIVOS DISTRICT AVA (2016): Containing the towns of Los Olivos, Solvang and Santa Ynez. Generally lower in elevation and less precipitous than other SB County AVAs, its moderate climate and microclimates allow a range of grapes to thrive, including Italian and Spanish varieties.

2012: Richard Sanford, who discovered that the Santa Rita Hills were ideally suited for Pinot Noir, becomes the only Santa Barbara County winemaker to be inducted into the Culinary Institute of America’s Hall of Fame in Napa.

A FAMOUS BREWING FAMILY PUTS DOWN ROOTS IN WINE COUNTRY

F

or Andy and Kim Busch, winemaking, like brewing, is a family affair focused on hospitality and, Kim says, “making friends, which is just as easy in the wine business as in the beer business.” It has been that way since 1861, when Andy’s great grandparents, Lilly Anheuser and Adolphus Busch, married during the formative years of what would become the world’s largest brewing company. Andy grew up in the family business and managed Grant’s Farm, the original Busch Gardens, located just outside of St. Louis. Today, he and Kim split their time between Santa Barbara and Folded Hills, located just over four miles from the Gaviota coast. They purchased the property in 2004, and eventually bought the adjacent Nojoqui Ranch. After a great deal of soil-testing, they planted their first Rhône varietals in 2014 and, two years later, released their first estate wine — a crisp, Provençal-style rosé. “We came to winemaking from a desire to preserve the land and add to the crops being grown,” says Kim. “We liked Pinot Noir, but our vineyards are the most coastal and southerly of any in Santa Barbara County. The land is too hot for Pinot Noir and too cold for Cabernet Sauvignon.” They eventually planted the Rhône varietals Syrah, Grenache, Clairette Blanche, Grenache Blanc and Marsanne, and have been working ever since with New Zealand–born winemaker Angela Osborne. Kim describes Angela as “an earth mama who could bring the heart we wanted” to producing wine in a style wholly tied to terroir. The grapes are often crushed by foot, the land is farmed 100-percent organically, and harvesting, bottling and releasing are done according to the biodynamic calendar. You can enjoy many Folded Hills small-production estate wines in the tasting room located in the property’s original farmhouse, which dates back to the early 1930s. Open daily from 11-5, the indoor-outdoor space has been renovated in rustic-chic style and invites guests, as Kim says, to “put up your boots; you can’t hurt anything.” In addition, Folded Hills opened the first and only tasting room in Montecito. Folded Hills is a lovely place to sip some wine, take in the incredible scenery, and enjoy a unique wine-country experience. That starts with “The Farmstead,” a farm shop open weekends from April through October. Visitors will find organic produce for sale from fifteen acres of row crops tended by renowned Santa Barbara organic farmer Tom Shepherd, as well as locally made baked goods, honeys and other good things. Kids will love feeding and petting the animals, among them a miniature jersey cow named Peaches, goats, donkeys, llamas and small Kunekune pigs. Children can also see where their food comes from while picking cherry tomatoes, strawberries, and other seasonal produce straight from field. Some Folded Hills wine names reflect the family’s heritage. For example, the Lilly rosé honors six generations of Busch women, while the reserve labels are adorned with sepia-toned images of ranch locations. Basically, Kim says, “We’ve merged our St. Louis heritage with ranch life.” Here, that also means keeping your eye out for a Clydesdale.

LONG BEFORE CARS and roads transported people around the Valley and into the surrounding backcountry, horses and trails did. The western heritage, still honored today, remains deeply ingrained in the SYV culture. It’s not unusual to see a few trusty steeds hitched to a post outside of a local restaurant while their riders enjoy some farm-fresh fare. Thankfully, for visitors who didn’t happen to ride into town on horseback, Santa Ynez Valley has a variety of top-notch, qualified local outfitters and guides to ensure everyone, from “cityslicker” novices to seasoned equestrians, experiences the joy of exploring the local landscape in true Valley fashion. Enjoy a relaxing ride through breathtaking vineyards and working ranches, picnic in style with a gourmet lunch, take an early morning ride into the hills and cozy up to a crackling campfire for an authentic western breakfast, or end the day with a ride off into the sunset and a glass of local wine. SAN MARCOS R ANCHO Designed by legendary golf architect Robert

RANCHO SAN MARCOS

Trent Jones Jr., Rancho San Marcos became the talk of the community by offering a world class golf course on 300 spectacular acres. This course is both a treasure to behold and a strategic challenge that no golfer can resist. The 6,939-yard course offers stunning views of the Santa Ynez River Valley, distant furrowed peaks, and eagles soaring above Lake Cachuma without a trace of urban development in sight. Rancho San Marcos, tucked deep into the valley floor of the Santa Ynez Mountains, has kept the essence of the old ranch, which was located here since the Spanish land grant of 1804. 4600 Highway 154, 805.683.6334 rsm1804.com

COURSE AT THE ALISAL R ANCH Designed by legendary Billy Bell, the Ranch

Course, open since 1955, is exclusively for Alisal Guest Ranch & Resort guests and members. This par-72 course stretches for 6,500 yards and is distinguished by tight fairways. It is surrounded by venerable oaks, sycamores and eucalyptus and features an imposing barranca that winds through the entire course. The Ranch Course offers a wellappointed pro shop, full-service restaurant for breakfast and lunch, professional instruction and excellent practice facilities. Electric carts, handcarts and clubs are available for rent. 1054 Alisal Road, 805.688.6411 ranchcourse.com

Gentle mounds define the manicured fairways and bentgrass greens accented by mature live oaks, native sycamores and elderberry trees, creating a "must play" golf experience for all. At 6,830 yards the layout is challenging, but not punishing. WHAT TO PACK

Layers, layers, layers. Warm, sometimes downright hot sunny days and refreshingly cool mornings and evenings demand lightweight jackets or sweaters to put on and take off accordingly. Comfortable shoes are essential as you explore the rows of vines and stroll downtown for shopping time. Top off your look with a hat to keep you cool; remember those hot sunny days we mentioned? Keep your reusable water bottle on hand because the sun + wine tasting + walking (a lot) = dehydration. Unless it’s a wedding, no suits or ties required in the casual comfort of the SYV.

Economy: Agriculture, ranching, the equine industry, and tourism drive the SYV economy. Emergency Services: Dial 911 to reach police, fire or ambulance at any time.
