F R E S C O VA L L E Y C A F É Great Options, Dog Friendly

L O O K I N G A R O U N D T H E S O LVA N G F O O D S C A P E , Matt Raab, owner of Fresco Valley Café, noticed a lack of unique breakfast menus, so he created one. Before that, he says, “It was pretty much pancakes.” Nothing wrong with that, of course, and the café has them, but here, the choices include lemon ricotta pancakes with mixed-berry compote. You can get classic eggs and bacon, or Eggs Rascal - kalamata olive toast topped with artichoke spread and poached eggs - or the killer avocado toast, with chili flakes, feta, lemon and olive oil, and enjoy it in Solvang’s prettiest garden patio. For a truly great start to the day, add a tangerine mimosa, a classic mimosa, or the “Pink Rascal,” a mix of sparkling wine with raspberry lemonade. Got a group? Then get a pitcher. And over a sunny lunch, it’s hard to beat a cold shandy - beer, lemonade and muddled mint - to go with halibut fish and chips, a West Coast Reuben sandwich on marbled rye, or fish tacos with corn tortillas, cabbage, avocado, sriracha aioli, pickled red onion and pineapple pico de gallo. And who doesn’t love a place that’s so dog friendly it has a menu that includes Beastly Bits and Sophisti-Bits (“for the sophisticated beast.”) Two legs or four, breakfast or lunch, the café has you covered seven days a week.

WHAT, WHEN & WHY: Two hours north of

Los Angeles, and a scenic four-hour drive south of San Francisco, the Santa Ynez Valley is home to six distinct communities in California’s Central Coast region. With more than 100 wineries, incredible food, special events and an authentic, relaxed vibe, it’s no wonder so many friends, families and couples converge here to sip, savor, and soak up all the valley has to offer. With so much to do, planning the perfect itinerary can be overwhelming. We’ve taken out the guess work to provide you with a Top 10 list of things you must do to treat yourself to an unforgettable experience in the Santa Ynez Valley.

1. WINE COUNTRY The Santa Ynez Valley is famous for its wineries. With a unique, transverse mountain range that funnels cool air from the Pacific Ocean, our micro-climates and terrains result in one of the most diverse grape growing regions in the world. Take a day to explore the wineries and see the vineyards firsthand. 2. TAKE A SELFIE IN SOLVANG No trip to the Santa Ynez Valley is complete without a visit to Solvang. This quaint little village is famous for its Danish bakeries and architecture and filled with photo-ops. Perfect the art of the selfie in front of the little red clog or one of the town’s many windmills. 3. CULINARY CRAVINGS There are so many great places to dine in the Santa Ynez Valley it can be hard to choose! Italian food aficionados will be pleased to find a handful of eateries serving up Italian favorites. Lovers of traditional American cuisine are well catered for with top-notch sandwiches and classic American steaks. If you’re looking for something with a more modern and creative flavor, the town of Los Alamos boasts innovative flavors, while the towns of Ballard and Los Olivos continue to offer romantic, candle-lit fine dining options. 4. CRAFT BEER If you can drag yourself away from the wineries, why not sample some of the superb local craft beers? From sours to stouts, three major breweries in the area offer award-winning brews sure to please a wide spectrum of beer connoisseurs. 5. TAKE IN A LOCAL EVENT From food-driven to family friendly, the Santa Ynez Valley hosts a number of events to bring everyone together. Regular events include painting in the vineyard at various wineries, kid crafts at local museums, and live music in the evenings on heated patios. Visit from September through December for some special events that celebrate each town’s unique history. 6. IMMERSE YOURSELF IN LOCAL CULTURE Drop in and visit one the Valley’s museums. Discover local history and lore at the Elverhøj Museum of History and Art and The Santa Ynez Valley Historical Museum, or pop into Wildling Museum to appreciate works of art that draw inspiration from nature. If you’re looking for something a little more niche, find vintage and rare motorcycles at the Solvang Vintage Motorcycle Museum, be dazzled by fairytales at the Hans Christian Anderson Museum, or feast your eyes on one of the west coast’s largest petroliana collections at the Mendenhall Museum.

Or if you’re feeling energetic, take a stroll through the adjacent Sedgwick Reserve by appointment, where volunteer staff guides you through the local terrain. If a family picnic is what you have in mind, head over to Nojoqui Falls Park down Alisal Road.

9. FIND ARTISAN TREASURES With specialty shops located in almost every town, you’re bound to discover a hidden treasure. EACH OF THE SIX THRIVING TOWNS THAT are considered part of the valley, Los Olivos, Ballard, Santa Ynez, Solvang, Buellton and Los Alamos, are within a short drive of each other, and each has its own unique character that keeps visitors coming back. SOLVANG: (PAGE 20) This town is the world-famous “Little Denmark” founded in 1911 by a group of Danish immigrants looking for a suitable place to build a school for their children. Danish names handed down from early settlers are still prevalent, as are Danish festivals, half-timbered buildings, decorative windmills, Danish sausages and pastries and the ever-popular and delightfully diet-busting sweet treat aebleskiver. BUELLTON: (PAGE 42) A couple of miles west of Solvang, unexpected surprises await in Buellton. On Industrial Way, you can visit urban tasting rooms, craft distillers, a flagship brewery and fan-favorite restaurant within a Frisbee throw of each other. Dining options in Buellton are plentiful and offer up everything from steaks cooked to perfection on an oak fire pit, to restaurants focusing on locavore inspired dishes, and exceptional wood-fired pizza. LOS OLIVOS: (PAGE 50) With more than thirty tasting rooms on its one main commercial street and some excellent restaurants, charming Los Olivos is the central hub of the valley wine industry. Here, you can spend a day tasting and lounging between visits to the many boutiques, antique stores and art galleries that span Grand Avenue and spill over onto the side streets. The town is the perfect mix of styles ranging from country chic to urban-influenced wine-country cool. LOS ALAMOS: (PAGE 60) The more northerly stop is Los Alamos, which is technically separated from the SYV proper by the Santa Rita Hills. However, this gastro center is attracting foodies from far and wide and cool businesses selling sophisticated goods are sprinkled along the 200 yard-long commercial strip. The nickname "Little L.A." plays on Los Alamos’ own initials and on the stream of successful Los Angeles refugees who in recent years have set off a culinary explosion, establishing excellent, quirky restaurants, wine tasting rooms, a bakery, a tap room and more. BALLARD: (PAGE 64) The tiny burg of Ballard, situated midway between Los Olivos and Santa Ynez, began life as a stagecoach stop and has since become a highly prized bedroom community. As the appealing setting for the Ballard Inn and The Gathering Table, it’s the perfect place to disappear for a couple of days while still having easy access to any valley attraction. Don’t miss a visit to the Little Red School House. Built in 1882, it still operates today at its picturesque location on the end of a big field of grass. SANTA YNEZ: (PAGE 66) A couple of miles south, is the tiny town of Santa Ynez. From a distance, it looks like an Old West stage set, but once you arrive, the town’s authentic character reveals itself. You’ll find a boot-stompin’ bar featuring live music on the weekends, as well as farm-to-table restaurants serving upscale Mexican, traditional Italian, and contemporary American wine-country cuisine. And with several lowkey hotels and inns here, it makes a great base camp for daily strikes all over the valley. 18

SOLVANG

California's Denmark USA TODAY readers named Solvang one of the “10 Best Historic Small Towns in America” for its authentic Scandinavian culture & hospitality; and designated Solvang as the “#1 place to enjoy global Christmas traditions in the USA." Expedia.com travelers named Solvang as one of the 50 “Top-rated Vacation Destination in North America” in 2018. Discover Solvang in the center of the Santa Ynez Valley, just 35 miles from the beaches of Santa Barbara, two hours up the coast from Los Angeles and four hours south of San Francisco. Solvang was 20

2019 SANTA YNEZ VALLEY DESTINATION GUIDE

founded in 1911 by three Danish-American educators who found a place in the central coast of California where land was plentiful and their culture could prosper. Situated on 9,000 acres of land adjacent to the historic 1804 Old Mission Santa Inés, Solvang thrived and settlers carried on Denmark’s traditions of language, folk dancing, music and cuisine. Solvang means “sunny field” in Danish. You can experience living history with the new Solvang Heritage Walking Tour Audio App available for free download at SolvangUSA.com

From Solvang’s beginnings in 1911, over the decades, more village buildings began to reflect Denmark’s farm-style architecture - the cross-beamed bindingsvaerk, timbers framing either brick or stucco and roofing of thatch made of wood shingles cut jagged at the edges. Danish tradition holds that the presence of a stork on a rooftop wards off lightning and brings good luck. Just as it does in Copenhagen, Denmark’s national symbol of the “Little Mermaid” bronze sculpture (a 1/2-size authorized replica) welcomes visitors at the intersection of Mission Drive and Alisal Road. A 1/3-size replica of Copenhagen’s famous 17th-century Rundetårn (Round Tower) at 436 Alisal Road is nestled behind one of the villages’ four large windmills that catch the first and last light. Visiting Solvang is like taking a vacation to Denmark with no passport required! In 1947, idyllic Solvang was “discovered” by the media and described in a Saturday Evening Post feature as a “spotless Danish village that blooms like a rose” and enticed travelers to experience it for themselves. In 2009, Solvang was honored with the prestigious “Preserve America Community” award by the National Advisory Council on Historic Preservation. Solvang celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2011 with yearlong Centennial festivities including a visit from Prince Henrik of Denmark, the fourth such visit by Danish royalty over the last century. Be drawn into Scandinavian culture along Solvang’s flowerlined streets. Stroll in any direction within Solvang’s pedestrian-friendly village into more than 150 oneof-a-kind stores, art galleries and antique centers. Step into five authentic bakeries and more than 35 restaurants and cafes—featuring not only Danish cuisine but also winecountry, international and traditional American favorites. Dozens of wine and beer tasting rooms, wine bars and gourmet food shops tempt palates with the bounty of nearby vineyards and farms. When it’s time to turn in for the night, choose from 18 comfortable inns, cozy bed & breakfasts, luxury resorts or fullservice hotels - each offering rates, amenities, as well as seasonal or themed packages enticing you to stay and rejuvenate.

Festivals are traditional parts of Solvang’s charm. Danish Days annual celebration emerged in 1936 and continues to commemorate Solvang’s heritage every September with artisans, folk dancing, three parades, aebleskiver breakfasts and free entertainment for the whole family. Savor the Taste of Solvang every March, Scarecrowfest and the Solvang (Grape) Stomp Wine Harvest Street Festival in October and Julefest (Yule-fest) during the entire month of December. Solvang was named by Time Magazine as one of the “Most Christmassy Towns in America” and MSN.com honored Solvang as one of the "50 Best Christmas Towns in All 50 States" and “America’s 50 Most Charming Small Towns for the Holidays.” Now in its second century, Solvang’s 5,500+ residents of many cultures still continue to enjoy the same traditions as the founders envisioned - welcoming friends, family and visitors from around the world to share the joys of “California’s Denmark”.

Balance leisure with adventure

SHOP SOLVANG In 2017, MSN.com named Solvang as one of the "Best 'Main Street' Shopping Districts in All 50 States." Discover that treasure you never thought you’d find - or perhaps never even dreamed of - at more than 150 independent and family-owned boutiques (chain stores are virtually non-existent in Solvang). Porcelain figurines, handmade lace, ironworks and music boxes excite collectors. Incredibly chic yet affordable women’s, men’s and kids clothing, fine leather goods, shoes, boots and clogs will keep you strolling. A popular photo op is the giant red clog at the corner of First Street and Copenhagen Drive. A wide range of art and antiques are on display at inviting galleries, all within steps from each other; delight in an array of elegant collectibles, beautifully crafted imports and classic toys.

FAMILY PLAYTIME There’s plenty of room to run, jump, play all around the area. All Solvang public parks have free admission and are open daily (sunrise to sunset) including Hans Christian Andersen Park (featuring a rad Skate Park) and the whimsical fort and playground at Sunny Fields Park. Pedal bicycles or four-wheeled “surrey cycles,” available for rental daily at Wheel Fun or from Dr. J’s Bicycle Shop. SYV SHOP TALK

The colorful carpets, home decor goods, jewelry, and gifts range in origin from Turkey, Iran, and all over the Middle East.

Meet Ibrahim Ciftcioglu, owner of Motif Arts Buying an antique rug isn’t always easy unless you are fortunate enough to get it from Motif Arts in downtown Solvang. Friendly owner, Ibrahim Ciftcioglu, is equally knowledgeable and passionate about his collection of fine antique and new, modern and traditional, handmade rugs and carpets and his enthusiasm is infectious. His large multi-level gallery, filled with hundreds of options, is a well-organized riot of color and texture. It’s almost mesmerizing to watch Ibrahim flip and fold back and forth through the heavy stacks of carpets, most of which were handmade by women, in their homes, using natural dyes the wool from their own animals. He’s intimately familiar with the inventory, and it’s captivating to hear him tell the origin story of each piece - the location of the village where it was made, the materials used, the many months of hand tying knots, etc. - as it reveals the humanity and craftsmanship behind these exquisite textiles. We caught up with Ibrahim in his bustling gallery and below is what he had to say about Motif Arts. POINT OF ORIGIN: Our carpets

range in origin from Turkey, Iran, and all over the Middle East. We have family sources who buy from villages and families, and we source some from other rug dealers in Turkey and in the states.

OTHER TREASURE: We also carry lovely Turkish made Ottoman-inspired jewelry from Istanbul, along with colorful Turkish towels, purses, carpet and silk pillowcases, silver jewelry, pottery, kilims, furniture pieces, pashmina scarves, gifts, and other home décor items.

SPECIAL: The most extraordinary rug we have in our store is a fine silk piece on display on our wall. It has gold dipped thread woven into it and is very special. Most of our pieces are antiques that we have collected from people’s homes that they made long ago.

TO TOP IT OFF: We offer rug

appraisals, complimentary in-home consultations, free delivery and installation, and shipping in the continental USA. Motif Arts specializes in finding, delivering, and placing the perfect rug for your home.

TURKISH RUGS IN LITTLE DENMARK: I am a Turkish-born American immigrant married to a Scandinavian/English wife from the Pacific Northwest. After traveling almost all 50 states and selling carpets based out of a shop on a small island off Seattle, we decided to escape the rain and thought Solvang would be the perfect spot. The year-round sunshine reminds me of the wonderful Mediterranean climate of Turkey, and I like meeting the many tourists who come to enjoy this cheery town.

LETS THE GOOD TIMES ROLL Lots of places claim to welcome kids and families. CHOMP, the friendly burger hangout in the heart of Solvang, could write the book on it. This is where pee-wee, junior high, and high school athletes and their friends and families gather after games.

“There are not a whole lot of places that focus on the kids," says proprietor Aaron Petersen. But he is dedicated to doing right by teens. The bussers and servers are all in high school. The youngest are sophomores. The 22-year-old managers are CHOMP’s oldest employees. CHOMP serves classic burgers and milkshakes (and there’s beer and wine for parents), but if you prefer that your kids eat fresh fruit rather than fries, or fruit juice instead of a coke, or you want an awardwinning Jordano’s plant-based burger or a strictly vegan or gluten-free indulgence, they’ll do you a solid at CHOMP. And now a new CHOMP sibling has opened in the same building - the equally kid-, teen- and family-friendly “Coffee House by Chomp.” It’s managed by Petersen’s 23-year-old daughter, Emilie, an art school graduate who has decorated with old desks and comfortable sofas for teens doing laptop time, plus small chairs and tables scaled just right for youngsters enjoying kid-friendly treats like a hot (but not scalding) strawberry milk, along with cookies, cinnamon rolls and other proportionately sized treats.

Chomp offers everything from classic burgers to stricTly vegan and gluten-free indulgences!

LOS ARROYOS Welcomes a New Member To The Family TONY AND MARIA ARROYO opened the first of four Los Arroyos restaurants

in 1999, and Tony has since opened others in Montecito, Goleta, Camarillo and even Carmel, Indiana. These are truly “family” restaurants. At every one, family members are there to make the experience fun and friendly and the food fresh, authentic, excellent and super-satisfying. Tony’s two brothers work with him, and so does Tony and Maria’s 15-year-old son, Diego. The extended family includes many employees who have been together for 12 to 19 years, as well as their children. Now, as the 20-year anniversary approaches, this collection of thriving family restaurants has a new sibling in Solvang, right next to the New Frontiers grocery store in the renovated Merkantile shopping center. The menu has all the familiar handmade, freshly prepared tacos, enchiladas, pozole, tamales, and other beloved dishes that continue to draw patrons from all over SB, California and far beyond. Order at the counter, settle in with a beer or a glass of local wine at the bar, in the dining room, or on the patio, and then let the experience wash over you. You’re among friends - and family. FIRST & OAK

RAREFIED AIR To find First & Oak, you have to wander off Solvang’s main streets. It’s a detour worth making, because this elegant restaurant in the old-worldstyle Mirabelle Inn offers an exquisite dining experience from an ever-changing seasonal menu driven by local ingredients. The kitchen brings precise technique and an obsessive focus on excellence to dishes that are layered with flavor and get the most from every ingredient. A garnish to a main dish might include both roots and flowers of the same vegetable roasted, pureed, and made into chips. It is all done with full awareness of their winecountry location, a wine list offering an even mix of California and European wines, and Thursday-night locals’ dinners. “A lot has gone into the wine industry, and we want to complement that,” says general manager Jonathan Rosenson, whose family owns the property. But for all the concern with flavor and presentation, the overarching goal is to please without pretention. That’s reflected in equally superb vegan, dairy- and gluten-free dishes. “We’re honored that our customers choose to come here,” says Rosenson, “and we want to make sure they can eat here and enjoy themselves.” And if you want to eat “out there,” ask about the First & Oak food truck. SANGER TASTING ROOM A Mediterranean Valley Welcome

PEND TIME IN THE NEW SANGER FAMILY OF WINES TASTING ROOM IN Solvang, and you’ll literally get a taste of the Sangers’ Mediterranean heritage. It starts with their three wine labels: Marianello reflects northern-Italian and Super Tuscan traditions; Consilience is focused on varieties from Burgundy, the Rhône Valley and Bordeaux; and Tre Anelli wines have their antecedents in Spain, Portugal and Italy. Olive oil from the Sangers’ olive farm trees furthers the connection. The family is dedicated to continuing and sharing the Mediterranean lifestyle, in which wine, food and family are paramount and “the family dinner is sacred,” says Bill, a firstgeneration Italian-American. “The wines are phenomenal, but they’re better because they embody our history. Even our winemaker is of Spanish and Italian descent.” At the tasting room, guests are invited to sit, relax, and really enjoy. “The bedrock for us is providing a sense of place and culture, hospitality and joie de vivre,” Bill says. “We’re driven by a vision to create top-tier wines and to reflect the values of connection, balance, integrity and respect. Whether you’re a master sommelier or someone having your first glass of wine, whether you’re here for two hours and drink only one glass of wine - or water - we want you to feel welcome, like part of the family.” SANGER FAMILY OF WINES TASTING ROOM 1584 MISSION DRIVE, SOLVANG • 805.691.1020 SANGERWINES.COM

Evolution Continues

The Los Angeles Times reveals, “Solvang's restaurants have traditionally played it safe (aebleskiver, Danish pancake balls, remain a popular treat), but new establishments are pushing the envelope.” Now, experience the French-Asian fusion of Chef Budi Kazali (The Gathering Table at Ballard Inn); festive Italian fare from third-generation Chef David Cecchini (Cecco Ristorante), Chef Pink of Food Network fame’s seasonal innovations at Root 246 at Hotel Corque; Chef Anthony Endy’s modern western flair (Alisal Guest Ranch & Resort) or Chef Beto Huizar’s fresh takes on food & wine pairings (Mad & Vin at The Landsby). The farm-to-table way of eating has long been a way of life here due to abundant sunshine, a crop-friendly climate and year-round growing season--served in romantic hideaways, family-friendly diners, rustic pubs, casual cafes plus plenty of al fresco dining options and paired with wine from the area’s 125+ awardwinning vineyards as well as locally-brewed craft beers. Specialty food shops feature olive oils and balsamic vinegars, fruit-based vinegar “shrubs” to fresh-made daily sorbets, Swedish Polkagris candies, old-world fudge and authenticrecipe Danish chocolates. On your culinary calendar, include Santa Ynez Valley Restaurant Weeks (January/February); Taste of Solvang (March), Danish Days (September); Solvang Grape Stomp (October) and dozens of wine-maker dinners and events in every season. Held every month, Solvang 3rd Wednesday is a perfect time to walk, shop, wine and dine especially with select restaurants featuring three-course menus and the immensely popular Wine & Beer Walk with two tastings at five places around the village for only $20. For the latest dining and tasting sensations, visit www.SolvangUSA.com

Solvang’s traditional Danish culinary heritage continues with specialties such as aebleskiver (Danish pancake balls served with raspberry jam and powdered sugar), frikadeller (meatballs), medisterpolse (Danish sausage), rødkaal (red cabbage), smørrebrød (open-faced sandwiches) and smorgaasbord (buffet) at longtime favorite places such as Bit o’Denmark, Paula’s Danish Pancake House, Red Viking and The Solvang Restaurant. Be bold and explore all five authentic Danish bakeries that make treats with a lot of love, just as they are in Denmark, such as butter cookies (great-to-go), real whip cream napoleons, chocolate éclairs, traditional kringles (shaped like pretzels), marzipan, almond rings, cakes of all sizes and shapes, hearty breads, even gingerbread houses and of course, mouth-watering flaky pastries.

BRICK BARN WI N E E STAT E

The focal point of the Brick Barn Wine Estate is a mid-century-modern-style barn that was built in the 1970s and has now been transformed with refined style to house a beautiful tasting room, a club members’ lounge, a large patio, and private salons for special events. The stateof-the-art winery was built between the barn and the original training arena and can be seen through the tasting room.

O

ccupying prime land in the Santa Ynez Valley AVA adjacent to the Sta. Rita Hills AVA, the property means clay and limestone soil for some vines and sandy loam for others. It’s a kind of varietal heaven. The 35-acre vineyard was planted in 2012, the first grapes were harvested in 2015, and the first varietals in 2016, with award winners among them. Now, celebrated valley winemaker Rob Dafoe is building on that young legacy. The unique tasting room features the original brick flooring, an inviting bar, and modern chandeliers. Outside, plush seating invites relaxation among ancient oak trees that frame soothing vistas all around. And come evening, lanterns glitter in those same trees, as fire pits carry the day’s warmth into night. Does it get better? OSTRICHES AND EMUS AND GIFTS, OH MY!

f feeding ostriches isn’t already on your bucket list, add it now and head straight to OstrichLand USA. This 33-acre working ranch, home to over 100 ostriches and emus, is a reasonably inexpensive thrill at $5 per adult and $2 for children under 12 for admission and $1 per bowl of feed. Guests enter through the charming gift shop, which is curated with a unique assortment of ostrich-related goods - feathered fans, ostrich leather bags, ostrich jerky, ostrich plush toys, hats, various curios, jewelry, tee shirts, and of course, when in season, ostrich eggs. There’s even a cabinet full of ostrich eggs autographed by famous visitors like Billy Bob Thornton and Ray Romano. Once you’ve made your way through the gift shop, the real adventure begins. Grab a bowl of feed and head out to the main attraction - the big birds! Once you approach the fence get ready because the herd comes in hot. Hang onto the bowl and let the feeding frenzy begin. Although the initial interaction with these enormous creatures can be a little intimidating, just follow the guidelines and enjoy the thrill. For a slightly more subdued experience meander down the path to meet the smaller and conceivably more docile “cousins” of the ostrich family - the emus. These unique creatures are all at once majestic, bizarre, graceful, comical and definitely worth the stop. OSTRICHLAND USA • 610 E HIGHWAY 246 • 805.686.9696 • OSTRICHLANDUSA.COM VISITSYV.COM

Los Olivos was first named after a nearby ranch made up of 5,000 olive trees.

LOS OLIVOS CALIFORNIA HISTORY MELDS WITH MODERN-DAY WINE TASTING rooms, art galleries and upscale shops in this picture-perfect country town in the northeast part of the valley. Centered by an iconic WWI memorial flagpole monument, Victorian homes and businesses cluster nearby around the community hub at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Alamo Pintado Avenue. Vineyards, lavender farms, orchards, ranches and horse trails surround Los Olivos. It’s a laid-back place where locals sit on wooden porches and chat with friends and visitors. In the early 1860s, the town was a welcome stagecoach stop on the route 50

that ran from San Francisco to San Diego. County Historical Landmark Mattei’s Tavern, which still stands today, was built in 1887 to house and feed those passengers. Don’t be deceived by the Victorian vibe because behind the historic doors the offerings are distinctly modern and sophisticated - elegant clothing and jewelry boutiques, antiques, art galleries, and gourmet dining. And then there’s the wine tasting - and world-class wine tasting. Sip local vintages at a tasting room - choose among more than 30 within a 5-block area. Los Olivos has something to offer the most discriminating of visitors.

Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Café - CHILL SPOT

C

hasing your favorite varietal along rural roads in the Santa Ynez Valley can be a blast. But sometimes - like when it’s hot or raining or you just want to chill - it’s nice to settle in someplace where the food is farm-to-table fresh, the welcome is warm, the pretense is non-existent, and wine offerings from Santa Barbara to Mendocino are right at your fingertips. Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Café is just such a place. Choose from the wraparound bar, the comfortable dining room, or the shaded outdoor tables in front, and let the enjoyment begin. Proprietors Sam and Shawnda Marmorstein provide much of the produce from their organic family farm, about a mile away, adding a seasonal signature to “Mary’s chicken,” homemade gnocchi with seasonal vegetables, salads that are fresh-picked crisp and other dishes. Feel like having just a beer and fries? Then get that, or a dessert to share or a whole meal. “It’s about providing the experience the customer wants, whatever it is,” Shawnda says. “That and providing a place where people can meet local winemakers,” which happens here at special monthly events. Happy hour runs from 3-6 pm weekdays, with value-priced bar food, beer and wine. It’s a good time to try the Marmorsteins’ first Bordeaux-style blend, bottled under the Bernat family label. SIDES HARDWARE & SHOES

Sense of Place

"Our philosophy is to use the best ingredients and prepare them for our guests in a way that’s consistent and trustworthy.”

J

eff and Matt Nichols open restaurants looking to connect - with history, tradition, community and the building that houses their enterprise. That’s as true at Brothers Restaurant at the Red Barn in Santa Ynez as it is at the ever-popular Sides Hardware & Shoes in Los Olivos. In fact, the name of the latter - not exactly a culinarily conspicuous one - was borrowed from the store that occupied the site a hundred years ago. Accordingly, the understated dining room, with its high, patterned tin ceiling, has a bit of an old-time feel. Here, you’ll find straightforward, carefully made American food: great sandwiches like “The Hammered Pig” (breaded, fried pork tenderloin with cabbage and pickles), seasonal market salads, house-made desserts, and good-as-it-gets burgers. Tip: try anything with their handcrafted Brothers bacon. Brined, slow-roasted, applewood smoked and then griddled with honey, it enhances the four-cheese grilled cheese, the Sides bacon burger, diver scallops with braised leeks and even the Bloody Bacon Mary. For dessert, don’t miss the upside-down cake with blueberries, peaches or other seasonal stars. “Our philosophy is to use the best ingredients and prepare them for our guests in a way that’s consistent and trustworthy,” says Jeff. Who can’t connect with that? 2375 ALAMO PINTADO AVENUE • 805.688.4820 • SIDESRESTAURANT.COM

2019 SANTA YNEZ VALLEY DESTINATION GUIDE

SYV SHOP TALK

w/ Sue Turner-Cray, Curator Extraordinaire & Proprietress of The Style Junction The most exceptional vintage in Los Olivos doesn’t always come in a bottle. The Style Junction is one of the Valley’s most unexpected treats. Home

to decades worth of coveted vintage designer goods, the looks run the gamut, from rock and roll to Breakfast at Tiffany’s and everything in between. These are definitely not your grandmother’s clothes unless she frequented CBGB in the late 70s or Paris runway shows in the 90s. An edgy-chic vibe permeates the space and the Union Jack painted on the floor gives a nod to owner, Turner-Cray’s British roots. Sprinkled throughout the funky, yet elegant clothing assortment is a mixture of new designer pieces and contemporary street wear. In the back of the store, you’ll find a fabulous selection of safe, high performing, American made, skin care and make up. We chatted with Turner-Cray over a cup of tea recently, and here’s what she had to say about her sartorial adventure.

V Turner-Cray rocked the red carpet at the Grammys last year in these Alexander McQueen stilettos, with her Grammy awardwinning husband Robert Cray and their son.

THE INSPO: I left a successful acting career in Los Angeles behind, as my husband and I relocated to the Valley in search of a more magical childhood for our son. I decided to go back to my early roots in the fashion industry and see if a vintage and new designer women's clothing store would appeal to locals and visitors. To my delight, it has been so well received I had to move to a larger location a few years ago.

CULTIVATING FASHION: My English grandmother loved glamour and my Irish mother, a window dresser in London and Leicester, was also a talented house decorator, so I’ve always been interested in color, clothes, and fashion. Luckily, I was pretty and leggy as a teen and walked the runway for Sonia Rykiel, Junko Koshino, Yohji Yamamoto, Kenzo, and others from 1983-1990.

OTHER OFFERINGS: I have a showroom of the entire line, available to sample, of American made, high performing, safe skin care, and makeup products from Beautycounter. After years of working with top makeup artists as a model and actress, I know all of the tricks of the trade. I want women to feel beautiful in every chapter of their lives, so by appointment only, I offer makeup and skin care consultations.

THE TRUTH BE TOLD: I am always truthful, if something doesn't work on you I will be honest. I love seeing my clients skip out the door, with items that will be worn and never collect dust in the back of the closet. The store is off the beaten path, down a dusty little road, but definitely worth the walk.

GOOD WARDROBE HUNTING: I get inside leads from several LA stylists I’m still in touch with from my acting years. On trips to London, to visit family I shop for different items not easily found in the US. I drive my husband and son a bit mad by stopping at every estate sale or interesting shop we encounter on trips to visit family and friends in New York or Seattle. I’m virtually always on the hunt for that hidden treasure - a cool Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood or John Galliano piece that I don't have to charge an arm and a leg for. 2948 NOJOQUI ROAD SUITE 4 • 805.455.1008 • THESTYLEJUNCTION.COM VISITSYV.COM

LOS ALAMOS SURROUNDED BY RANCHES, FARMS AND VINEYARDS AT THE northern “entry” to the Santa Ynez Valley, Los Alamos is located at the junction of US Highway 101 and State Route 135. Bell Street, the main thoroughfare, is only seven blocks long yet reflects as much Old West heritage as any small town on California’s Central Coast. Founded in 1876 and named in Spanish for “the cottonwoods” that still grace the area - it looks and feels vintage yet boasts a burgeoning food, wine, arts & antique scene. One-of-a-kind lodging includes a Victorian-style 60

BALLARD THE SERENE VILLAGE OF BALLARD IS THE OLDEST AND smallest of the region’s towns and holds some of the valley’s most treasured gems, including two Santa Barbara County Historical Landmarks. The Ballard Elementary School, also known as the “Little Red Schoolhouse” has been educating local children since 1883. The other noteworthy landmark is the picturesque Ballard Presbyterian Church - now Ballard Country

Mickey Rooney & Ava Gardner were married in Ballard on January 10, 1942

The community is also home to The Ballard Inn & The Gathering Table – one of the most romantic and luxurious B&Bs in the region where delectable award-winning French-Asian cuisine is savored. SANTA YNEZ IN THE VINTAGE township of Santa Ynez, with its period-style falsefront building facades, feed stores and random horses hitched to posts, it’s sometimes hard to tell if it’s 2018 or 1884. However, this somewhat sophisticated cowboy town boasts plenty of conveniences for modernday trail riders. The streets, with horse shoe-embedded crosswalks, are lined with a variety of clothing boutiques, home decor stores, galleries, restaurants and even an original California honky-tonk saloon. If you have 66

an appetite, this is the place to be, as the dining options range from classic burgers, pancakes and waffles, to steaks, seafood, regional Italian fare, Latin fusion and locavore cuisine. The Chumash Casino Resort, adjacent to the township, offers 24/7 gaming, live entertainment, dining and luxurious accommodations. Cyclists gravitate to Santa Ynez for a world-class training center, tours or just the chance to ride a bike along quiet country roads. There’s plenty to see, do and eat in the town that gave the Valley its name.

And thankfully, for visitors who didn’t happen to ride into town on horseback, Santa Ynez Valley has a variety of top-notch, qualified local outfitters and guides to introduce everyone, from firsttime “city-slickers” to seasoned equestrians, to the joys of exploring the local landscape in true Valley fashion. You need only a single word to describe the Santa Ynez Valley food scene: exploding. Gastronomy

S CENE The town of Santa Ynez is home to Brothers at the Red Barn, one of two restaurants owned and operated by brothers Jeff and Matt Nichols. Over time, dominant valley themes have been cattle and horses, cowboys and ranches, organic farms and Vinifera vines. The meat-focused Red Barn is right in step with all that, offering superb mesquite-grilled meats and seafood, and a cellar full of perfect wines. A skip away, the Ballard Inn is the ideal place to relax and enjoy memorable food at The Gathering Table restaurant. Indonesianborn, Santa Barbara–raised, French-technique-trained chef, Budi Kazali, turns out incredible valley-fresh Asian-fusion fare made with the best local ingredients. Naturally, wine plays a big role in enjoying the ever-changing menu, as does super-friendly service and, in winter, a blaze in the big fireplace.

Norman

Grand Avenue in nearby Los Olivos is lined with tasting rooms, galleries, antique shops, boutiques and restaurants. Just off Grand, Sides Hardware and Shoes, the Nichols Brothers’ other local restaurant, is a casual place serving super-fresh, straightforward small bites and sandwiches, beautiful salads, and local seafood and meat dishes - food the brothers like to refer to as “trustworthy.” Just around the corner is Los Olivos Wine Merchant and Café. This relaxed and welcoming place sells a tremendous variety of Central Coast wines, offers winemaker dinners, and turns out delicious food featuring seasonal produce from proprietors Sam and Shawnda Marmostein’s own organic farm. Relax at the bar, in the dining room or on the shaded front porch.

here is growing and evolving in every geographic and culinary direction. Wine was the first recent change agent in the valley, and now the food is catching up, with more diversity and innovation than ever before. Here are a few of the players.

In the Danish town of Solvang, a whole lot of people like to start their day at the Solvang Restaurant, ordering Danish sausage and some diet-busting aebleskiver, the spherical, pancake-like treats topped with jam and powdered sugar. Tip: ask for translations of the funny Danish sayings painted onto the ceiling beams. Continue the Danish - and more broadly Scandinavian - theme at the Red Viking in Solvang, serving both purely American and authentically Danish fare. The latter includes Danish sausage as well as pork meatballs served with red cabbage, potatoes and gravy. Or indulge in a Swedish-style smorgasborg buffet of hot and cold dishes. They do aebleskiver, too! Solvang locals love Fresco Valley Café for its giant patio, its quiet location and its simple, satisfying and familiar food. Sandwiches, including the pastrami, the chicken salad, the BLT, and the French dip, are true to the classics. Ditto the Cobb salad and the Caesar. Says, owner First and Oak Matt Raab, “It’s what you remember as a kid.” Got family? Then CHOMP has you covered. It’s the local hangout for kids and parents looking for burgers, shakes and fries - or even a vegan burger and juice - after a game, before homecoming, or any other time. CHOMP is run with youth in mind, but moms and dads can get a glass of wine or a beer. Since 1999, Tony Arroyo has been winning fans for the authentic Mexican food he serves at his several Los Arroyos restaurants in and around Santa Barbara. Finally, there’s one in Solvang. The menu has all the familiar handmade tacos, enchiladas, pizole, tamales, and other beloved dishes that continue to draw patrons from far beyond the area. At Root 246 in Solvang’s Hotel Corque, Chef Pink, is raising the bar. She offers brightly flavored 21st-century California cooking that highlights amazing local ingredients, from braised octopus stew, and Niman Ranch osso bucco to grilled steaks and local seafood. Pairing 101

The Gathering Table

With more than 21,000 acres of wine grapes, 200-plus wineries and six American Viticultural Areas, the right wine is always close in the Santa Ynez Valley. Here’s a quick guide to a few common varietals. Keep in mind that different styles of the same wine may pair better with different foods, and that the most important rule is to drink what you like. CHARDONNAY: Great with seafood, pasta or poultry dishes with a rich, creamy sauce. SAUVIGNON BLANC: Fruit, tangy cheese, and anything from seafood to poultry or veal with a tart dressing or sauce.

FARM TO FORK

They say it’s all about the ingredients, and Santa Ynez is awash in them. Every kind of comestible is farmed or raised here, from honey, herbs and olives to organic produce, poultry, pork and beef. Local waters are home to world-class uni (sea urchin), plus spot prawns, halibut, rockfish, sea bass, calamari and more. You’ll find chefs selecting just-picked fruits and vegetables at the Solvang Farmers Market, Wednesdays from 2:30 – 6:30, and nearby Lompoc has another Fridays from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. Organic farms dot the valley, as do producers of wholesome meats, like Rancho San Julian, which has raised grass-fed beef since 1817, and Jimenez Family Farms, which specializes in rabbit, lamb, pork, goat, and chicken.

SPARKLING: Extremely food friendly, especially with salty dishes; great with spicy Asian dishes. VIOGNIER: Spicy food and seafood, shellfish, chicken, veal and pork. FRENCH-STYLE (DRY) ROSÉ: Great with picnics: tangy cheeses and fruit. PINOT NOIR: Versatile, can go with roasted meats, spicy Asian food, tangy cheeses, tagine. SYRAH: This varietal’s spicy notes go perfectly with highly seasoned meats. CABERNET SAUVIGNON: Steak and other red meat with dark reduction sauces. VISITSYV.COM

room for desserts, like the Huckleberry Buckle or the Hard Rootbeer Float. At First & Oak, in Solvang’s Mirabelle Inn, the welcome is warm, and the everchanging seasonal menu reflects perfect ingredients and precise technique. This is carefully considered and prepared food, with layers of flavors and individual ingredients often being treated three or four different ways in a single dish. The wine list is a 50-50 mix of California and European offerings. On a hill in Los Alamos, called “Little L.A.” for the number of Los Angeles refugees who have made this sleepy burg a culinary hot spot, are the mid-centurystyled Skyview Motel and its restaurant, Norman. Cheese plates, charcuterie, burgers, steaks, chicken and seafood are all offered in ingredient-driven farm-totable style. Enjoy it all with good wines and wine-country views to match.

At Solvang Restaurant, Aebleskiver are a favorite!

The Danish Table

Traditional Danish food includes buttery pastries, pork, beef, potatoes, cabbage, pâtés, pickled herring and gravlax. Capers are common and quite a few dishes call for caraway seeds. Danish cheeses include danbo, Havarti and blue. Danish pastries - made from a versatile buttery dough and often featuring marzipan and custard - are referred to collectively as wienerbrød, which means “Viennese bread” and refers to the dough’s Austrian origins. Kruegel and butter ring are two of the most popular varieties. In Solvang aebleskiver are a favorite. The spherical, pancake-like sweets are often filled with apples in Denmark but in Solvang are topped with preserves and powdered sugar. During winter they may be teamed with gløgg - mulled wine with spices and citrus peel. Morning, noon or night, Danish pork sausages, called medisterpølse, are always on the menu; for lunch or dinner, they might be served with sautéed red cabbage, boiled potatoes and gravy, a traditional treatment that also given to frikadelle - flattish

pork meatballs made with onions. Another hearty Danish lunch or dinner entrée is aebleflaesk, cured or salted pork belly fried with apples, thyme and sugar. Lunch is the time for smorrebrod, which are open-face sandwiches made from a variety of cold ingredients arrayed on a table. It is not to be confused with its near cousin, Swedish smörgasborg, which includes sandwiches plus a variety of other hot and cold dishes. Indulge in open-faced sandwiches at Red Viking Restaurant.

WINE

Horses and cattle were once the main cash crops of the Santa Ynez Valley,

a legacy of the Spanish rancho days. But when visionary winemakers began planting vinifera and exploring the area's varied terrain in the 1970s, a sea of change was quickly afoot. Oh sure, you can still see thoroughbred horses running in green pastures here, as well as lavender farms and some of the best organic produce anywhere. But these days wine is king - and queen and president and prime minister, too. Vines flourish from the valley floor to mountainside plots 1,500 feet above it. Tasting rooms and restaurants in the towns attract visitors from around the world, who come to taste spectacular wine and enjoy this gorgeous part of the planet.

200 Approximate number of wineries in SB County 50 Number of grape varieties grown here $151.6 million Value of the grapes harvested in SB County in 2016 $1.7 billion Estimated annual economic impact of the industry, Santa Barbara County’s most valuable agricultural segment

1970:

1962:

Pierre Lafond opens Santa Barbara Winery, the first winery since Prohibition.

1964:

UC Davis horticulturalists Uriel Nielson and Bill De Mattei establish the county’s first commercial vinifera vineyards in the Santa Maria Valley. Ten years later, major Northern California producers are purchasing their Chardonnay grapes.

1782:

Father Junípero Serra plants the area’s first grapevine cuttings, establishing mission vineyards in what is now the city of Santa Barbara.

2019 SANTA YNEZ VALLEY DESTINATION GUIDE

Central Valley grower Louis Lucas partners with Al Gagnon and Dale Hampton to establish the 800-acre Tepusquet Vineyard, one of the earliest in the region.

SANTA MARIA VALLEY AVA (1981): Fog and wind keep temperatures cool, especially in the western part of this near-coast AVA, Santa Barbara’s first. Known for cool-weather-loving Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, it also produces excellent Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Nebbiolo and Cabernet Franc.

HAPPY CANYON AVA (2009): The most eastern growing region is also the warmest, with hills reducing ocean breezes and fog. Cabernet Sauvignon and warm-weather styles of Sauvignon Blanc predominate, with extensive plantings of Syrah as well.

SANTA YNEZ VALLEY AVA (1983): The largest AVA in SB County contains four sub-AVAs. Predominantly east-west oriented, it is cut by hills that produce numerous microclimates. World-class Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grow in the cooler western part of the AVA, while Rhône and Bordeaux varieties thrive in the warmer, eastern areas.

BALLARD CANYON AVA (2013): Windy, foggy, and with wildly shifting temperatures, Ballard Canyon occupies a middle ground between the coolest and warmest parts of the valley. The Rhône grape Syrah rules here, accounting for more than half the planted acreage, and local Syrahs are every bit the equal of the French counterparts.

STA. RITA HILLS AVA (2001): The odd spelling of “Saint” is the result of a settlement involving a Chilean AVA of the same name. Slightly warmer than the adjacent Santa Maria AVA. This is Pinot Noir country, which makes up nearly two-thirds of the vineyard acreage, followed by Chardonnay.

LOS OLIVOS DISTRICT AVA (2016): Containing the towns of Los Olivos, Solvang and Santa Ynez. Generally lower in elevation and less precipitous than other SB County AVAs, its moderate climate and microclimates allow a range of grapes to thrive, including Italian and Spanish varieties.

2012:

Richard Sanford, who discovered that the Santa Rita Hills were ideally suited for Pinot Noir, becomes the only Santa Barbara County winemaker to be inducted into the Culinary Institute of America’s Hall of Fame in Napa.

1993:

1973:

Brothers Stephen and Bob Miller plant Bien Nacido Vineyard, today one of the valley’s most-famous and enduring sources of superb cool-weather grapes.

On Thanksgiving a year after their tiny inaugural harvest grapes from Viognier vines planted accidentally on their land, the Sunstone family enjoys their first bottle of estate wine.

2004:

The wine-centric romantic comedy Sideways puts Santa Ynez Valley wine country on the map for millions and gives local Pinot Noirs, in particular, their place in the Hollywood sun.

LAY OF THE LAND Most mountain ranges run in a north-south direction, but the coastal San Raphael and Santa Ynez mountains that form the Santa Ynez Valley and the greater Santa Barbara County wine region run east to west. As such, they act like a funnel for cool air and fog from the Pacific Ocean, creating myriad micro-climates at various elevations suitable for a wide range of varietal grapes. Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and other grapes that like hot days and cold nights predominate in the eastern region, while consistent, cool weather to the west favors such Burgundy varietal grapes as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Both regions provide long growing seasons and extended “hang time” for the fruit, allowing there sugars and acids to develop slowly and fully, essential for great wines. ANCH COURSE AT THE ALISAL

The River Course at the Alisal presents golfers with breathtaking panoramas of the brilliant hues of the foothills and the Santa Ynez Mountains and Valley. The Course features four lakes and often follows the meandering path of the Santa Ynez River. Gentle mounds define the manicured fairways and bentgrass greens accented by mature live oaks, native sycamores and elderberry trees, creating a "must play" golf experience for all. At 6,830 yards the layout is challenging, but not punishing. The strategic placement of a variety of hazards rewards length & accuracy without severely penalizing recreational golfers. 150 Alisal Road, 805.688.6042 rivercourse.com

Designed by legendary golf architect Robert Trent Jones Jr., Rancho San Marcos became the talk of the community by offering a world class golf course on 300 spectacular acres. This course is both a treasure to behold and a strategic challenge that no golfer can resist. The 6,939-yard course offers stunning views of the Santa Ynez River Valley, distant furrowed peaks, and eagles soaring above Lake Cachuma without a trace of urban development in sight. Rancho San Marcos, tucked deep into the valley floor of the Santa Ynez Mountains, has kept the essence of the old ranch, which was located here since the Spanish land grant of 1804. 4600 Highway 154, 805.683.6334 rsm1804.com

Designed by legendary Billy Bell, the Ranch Course, open since 1955, is exclusively for Alisal Guest Ranch & Resort guests and members. This par-72 course stretches for 6,500 yards and is distinguished by tight fairways. It is surrounded by venerable oaks, sycamores and eucalyptus and features an imposing barranca that winds through the entire course. The Ranch Course offers a wellappointed pro shop, full-service restaurant for breakfast and lunch, professional instruction and excellent practice facilities. Electric carts, handcarts and clubs are available for rent. 1054 Alisal Road, 805.688.6411 ranchcourse.com La Purisima Golf Course 88

what to pack

Layers, layers, layers. Warm, sometimes downright hot sunny days and refreshingly cool mornings and evenings demand lightweight jackets or sweaters to put on and take off accordingly. Comfortable shoes are essential as you explore the rows of vines and stroll downtown for shopping time. Top off your look with a hat to keep you cool; remember those hot sunny days we mentioned? Keep your reusable water bottle on hand because the sun + wine tasting + walking (a lot) = dehydration. Unless it’s a wedding, no suits or ties required in the casual comfort of the SYV.
