VALLEY DESTINATION GUIDE

SANTA YNEZ VALLEY Endless P o ssibilities

THE SANTA YNEZ VALLEY HAS BEEN A HORN OF PLENTY TO LOCAL INHABITANTS FOR MORE THAN A DOZEN MILLENNIA. THE CHUMASH INDIANS WERE THE FIRST TO EARN A LIVING FROM THIS FRUITFUL PLACE, WHICH IS FRAMED BY THE SAN RAFAEL MOUNTAINS ON THE NORTH AND THE SANTA YNEZ Mountains

on the south, with the Santa Ynez River meandering on its east-west path to the sea. Spanish, Mexican, American and Danish inhabitants came in turn, raising cattle and sheep and planting crops and fruit orchards. In the past twenty years, wine has become the leading crop, thanks to ideal growing conditions characterized by cool, foggy nights and warm, sunny days. Dozens of microclimates within the valley’s five American Viticultural Areas provide ideal growing conditions. The valley also yields outstanding organic produce, honey, lavender, boutique olive oils, and on the numerous thoroughbred horse ranches, prize equine stock graze in fields studded with deep-green oak trees, beneath broad stands of manzanita-sage chaparral. Each of the six thriving towns that are considered part of the valley, Los Olivos, Ballard, Santa Ynez, Solvang, Buellton and Los Alamos, are within a short drive of each other, and each has its own unique character that keeps visitors coming back. The more northerly stop is Los Alamos, which is technically separated from the Santa Ynez Valley proper by the Santa Rita Hills. Never mind, because you’d be hard-pressed to find any town with more cool businesses selling more sophisticated comestibles than “Little L.A.” has on its one 200 yard-long commercial strip. The recently coined nickname for the former stagecoach stop plays on Los Alamos’ own initials and on the stream of successful Los Angeles refugees who in recent years have set off a culinary explosion, establishing excellent,

quirky restaurants, wine tasting rooms, a bakery, a tap room and more. This new gastro-center is attracting foodies from far and wide, and many are staying the night. With more than thirty tasting rooms on its one main commercial street and some excellent restaurants, charming Los Olivos is the central hub of the valley wine industry. Here, you can spend a day tasting and lounging between visits to the many boutiques, antique stores and art galleries that span Grand Avenue and spill over onto the side streets. Lately, the town has evolved to include a pleasing mix of styles ranging from down home to country chic to urban-influenced wine-country cool. The tiny burg of Ballard, situated midway between Los Olivos and Santa Ynez, also began life as a stagecoach stop and has since become a highly prized bedroom community. As the appealing setting for the Ballard Inn and Restaurant, and little else, it’s the perfect place to disappear for a couple of days while still having easy access to any valley attraction. If you do come, don’t miss a short walk to the Little Red School House. Built in 1882, it still operates today at its picturesque location on the end of a big field of grass. A couple of miles south, Santa Ynez is a tiny town that offers an array of attractions. From a distance, it looks like an Old West stage set, but once you arrive, the town’s authentic character reveals itself. You’ll find boot-stompin’ bars featuring country rock on weekend afternoons, as well as farm-totable restaurants serving upscale Mexican, perfected traditional Italian, and contemporary American winecountry cuisine. And with several low-key hotels and inns here, just a few miles from Solvang, it makes a great base camp for daily strikes all over the valley. Solvang, of course, is the world-famous “Little Denmark” founded in 1911 by a group of Danish immigrants looking for a suitable place to build a school for their children. Danish names handed down from early Solvang settlers are still prevalent, as are Danish festivals and fraternal organizations, halftimbered buildings, decorative windmills, Danish sausages, Danish pastries and the ever-popular aebleskiver. No one leaves Solvang without digging in to a plate of the sweet, delightfully diet-busting little spheres topped with raspberry jam and dusted with powdered sugar. A couple of miles west of Solvang, unexpected surprises await in Buellton. On the unpromisingly named Industrial Way, you can visit a huge wine enterprise, a fantastic brewery and brewpub, a craft distillery and a fine restaurant within a Frisbee throw of each other. Settle in here near the Santa Ynez River for some easygoing wine-country fun. As for the Chumash, they’ve come full circle, working to preserve their culture while generating income from their lively lux hotel-casino. Spending time there or anywhere else in the valley, you quickly come to know what the tribe has known for some 13,000 years: the Santa Ynez Valley provides. 16

NESTLED IN THE STA. RITA HILLS, BUELLTON IS ONE of the fastest growing cities in the region. Long known for worldfamous split pea soup and now on THE RADAR OF SERIOUS BEVERAGE AFICIONADOS who come to imbibe not only wine, but awardwinning craft beer and premium spirits as well. Several top tier breweries, the largest custom crush wine facility between Los Angeles and San Francisco and the first craft distillery in Santa Barbara County, are putting this valley destination on the map. There are many great restaurant options to choose from, particularly along Industrial Way. In the middle of town, tucked away on a little side street is a unique museum, which houses one of the West Coast’s largest petroliana collections, including gasoline pumps, globes, and porcelain gas, oil and road signs. The impressive collection also includes race cars, racing memorabilia, license plates and other interesting antiques. Buellton is home to the Santa Ynez Valley Botanic Garden, a 2 ½ acre site, which highlights plants native to the Santa Ynez River watershed. Perhaps you have seen the Academy Award-winning movie, Sideways? Along with a few talented actors, the film co-starred the Santa Ynez Valley and the popular Buellton restaurant, The Hitching Post II.

It all began nearly 150 years ago, in 1875 when Rufus T. Buell came to the Santa Ynez Valley and purchased a portion of the San Carlos de Jonata Ranch. He established a general store, post office, bunkhouses, a blacksmith shop and family homes. Eventually Mr. Buell bought the entire ranch and during a drought period, sold 10,000 acres of it to the Santa Ynez Land and Development Company. Settlers soon followed and the area blossomed, but it was not until 1920 when a United States Post Office was opened that the town was officially named. Strategically located at what was once the crossroads of state highways 101 and 246, Buellton thrived as automobile traffic grew, bringing car-loads of travelers right through town and up the main street, Avenue of the Flags. Although the busy freeway was moved to its current location in the 1960s, visitors still come to Buellton to experience the food and wine scene as well as the libations and lodging possibilities. BUELLTON IS HOME TO a variety of unique festivals and events. ONE OF the most POPULAR is THE Buellton Brew FesT. GUESTS ARE INVITED TO sample craft beer from over 40 brewers, enjoy a variety of food options, live music, and games. This 21 and over event takes place at River View Park. Buellton Wine and Chili Fest: Some of the best Valley chefs compete in a chili cook-off and salsa competition. Enjoy live entertainment, wine tasting, a tri-tip lunch and sample beer, wine, salsa, and chili from local vendors. This tasty event takes place at Flying Flags Resort and

FIRESTONE WALKER BARRELWORKS the New Old World of Brewing

One of the most unique corners of the ever-expanding U.S. microbrewery universe awaits at the Firestone Walker Brewing Company in Buellton. Here, you can step into the mainstream Taproom, a great place for excellent pub faire and a dozen or so Firestone craft beers on tap. But things get really interesting in the adjacent Barrelworks, which offers 3-ounce tastes of some of the most diverse, interesting, idiosyncratic small-batch beers you’ll ever taste. Each of the 15 or so rotating beers on tap is made in the “sour” Lambic style, which has been associated with Brussels, Belgium, for hundreds of years. The “wild ales” are fermented slowly using wild yeast strains and then aged for up to 48 months in oak wine barrels. The barrels host favorable bacteria and other beer-friendly living entities - “that produce esters and acids that you don’t find in other beers and add flavor and character,” says master blender Jim Crooks. On weekends, you can walk through the barrel rows. Some have a wine-like essence with almost no effervescence. Others are Champagne-like, pink and flavored with raspberries. Others offer citrus notes and cereal tones. Among the “strong ales,” don’t miss “Velvet Merkin,” with its robust flavors of coffee and chocolate. Welcome to the brave new world of old-world brewing. 620 MCMURRAY ROAD

SANTA YNEZ

2017 SANTA YNEZ VALLEY DESTINATION GUIDE

Classic Old Western movie set or thriving Valley town, filled with a cornucopia of culinary delights, outstanding shopping and premium wine tasting? Santa YNEZ is obviously the latter, and so much more. While much of the region’s history lives on in this vintage township, in the form of periodstyle western building facades, Santa Ynez is firmly rooted in the present. The streets, with horse shoeembedded cross walks, are lined with fabulous clothing boutiques, luxury home stores, quaint coffee shops, bakeries, a world-class casino, one of the last original, booming California saloons and a host of restaurants. If you are hungry, Santa Ynez is definitely the place to be! Choose from critically acclaimed farm to table regional fare, classic burgers, inspired Mexican food and magnificent margaritas, tasty Italian, fresh seafood and steaks. There is definitely something to satisfy a full range of taste buds or preferences. Santa Ynez was founded in 1882, after Bishop Francis Mora received Congressional approval to sell a large land parcel called College Ranch. The land was located just east of Mission Santa Inés and a mere mile from the historic San Marcos Pass stagecoach route, which traversed the Santa Ynez Mountains, between Santa Barbara and Los Olivos. Tracts of land sold for between $6 and $15 per acre. Although the fledgling town did not become the urban center its founders once hoped for, as the Southern Pacific Railroad bypassed Santa Ynez for a coastal route, it has blossomed into one of the Valley’s most inviting communities and continues to proudly serve the surrounding ranches, farms, residents and visitors to the region. The town’s historic roots are tended to at the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley Historical Museum and Parks-Janeway Carriage House.

OME MEN DON’T LIKE TO SHOP; THEY CLEARLY HAVEN’T BEEN TO RANCH MEN’S STORE. LOCATED IN DOWNTOWN SANTA YNEZ,

this apparel and specialty shop definitely goes beyond the basics and then some. It’s a head to toe hearty smorgasbord of style - raw Wranglers, washed Levis, North Face jackets, buttery soft polos from Faherty, rugged sandstone duck cloth workwear from Carhartt, button-downs from Johnnie-O, Frye boots, Timex watches, Jack Black grooming products, and so much more. Then there’s the big boy toys for the avid outdoorsman - an impressive assortment of Helle and SOG hunting knives, Hults Bruk hatchets, Nordic pocket saws and other cool guy gear. There’s also a small section devoted to apparel for boys and babies. While the offerings are diverse, from classic, iconic brands to under-the-radar up and coming fresh collections, they all share a common thread of down-to-earth quality. Ranch Men’s Store is a retail gamechanger in the Valley area, as it strikes a level balance between form, function, fun, and fashion. Be it a hard day’s work on the ranch or a night out on the town, they’ve got you covered.

LOS OLIVOS

2017 SANTA YNEZ VALLEY DESTINATION GUIDE

once a bustling stagecoach and railroad stop, Los Olivos is now a thriving community, filled with outstanding restaurants, beautiful art galleries, lively wine tasting rooms and fabulous shopping. Located just off of the scenic highway 154 (which runs from Santa Barbara over San Marcos Pass), this historic town is surrounded by golden rolling hills, horse ranches, acres of vineyards, weathered oak and of course olive trees - all features that have come to define the Santa Ynez Valley. While rich with old California history, today’s Los Olivos is well established as a must-stop for wine lovers, foodies, art and antique collectors, and savvy shoppers. Los Olivos was once not much more than a welcome stop along the stagecoach route, which ran from San Francisco to San Diego. The Overland Coast Line Stage Station was established in Ballard, just south of Los Olivos in 1861. This along with the impending arrival of the Pacific Coast Railway, prompted an Italian-Swiss immigrant named Felix Mattei to build a hotel and restaurant in 1887, in order to accommodate weary rail and stage coach travelers. In 1887, land auctions were held and this tiny, yet vital village was born. Its namesake was inspired by a parcel of around 157 acres of land, over looking Alamo Pintado Creek, which sold for eight thousand dollars to Albany, New York native, Alden March Boyd. The recent transplant subsequently planted five thousand olive trees on the property and named it Rancho De Los Olivos, thus giving the town its name.

A stroll through Los Olivos reveals many of the original Victorian buildings and residences, most over one hundred years old and still occupied today. The WWI memorial flag pole monument, erected in April of 1918, at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Alamo Pintado Avenue, prominently marks the heart of the town. From there explore the many wine tasting rooms featuring local vintages from the surrounding vineyards. Or perhaps go to the source and hop on the Foxen Canyon Wine Trail, which begins in Los Olivos and winds north, through horse ranches and vine-covered acres, into the mountains. Don’t be deceived by the historical ambiance and Victorian aesthetic, as behind these historic doors, the offerings are distinctly modern and sophisticated - from elegant clothing and jewelry boutiques, antiques and art galleries to world-class wine tasting and gourmet dining, Los Olivos has something to offer the most discriminating visitors. Los Olivos hosts a variety of unique events and festivals throughout the year. If you love world class jazz, wine, gourmet food and supporting an organization that improves the lives of others, then the Los Olivos Jazz and Olive Festival is the event for you. Enjoy tastings

2017 SANTA YNEZ VALLEY DESTINATION GUIDE

Avec Moi Décor A PARISIAN OUTPOST IN THE HEART OF WINE COUNTRY

Q&A with Michele Power

Self-described Francophile and owner Michele Power gives us the scoop on her eclectic home/lifestyle boutique. What was the inspiration for bringing a little touch of Europe to Los Olivos? MP: I was a fashion designer for 30 years, traveled extensively in Europe and fell in love with France. I drew great inspiration from French decor and designers and of course the French women’s sense of fashion and flair for living life to its fullest. Tell us a bit about Avec Moi Décor and the meaning behind the fanciful store name. MP: During my travels in France, a bus passed by with the saying Avec Moi on the side. Just like Carrie from Sex and the City seeing herself on the bus as it passed by, it was like a déjà vu and hence my store name. Dreams do come true! In addition to decor items, antiques, books, women’s clothing, and accessories, what other goods do you offer? MP: I love finding artists that make interesting things. Many of them customize their work to fit whatever theme on which I’m working. In my men’s section, I have a show-stopping bar made from the front end of a 1957 vintage International truck. It was shipped all of the way from Texas and the headlights still work! How do you go about curating and editing the store inventory? What collections or items are exclusive to Avec Moi Décor? MP: We carry a lot of handcrafted items that are made especially for us - hand towels, lotions, candles, French-themed signs, and even key chains made from old silver spoons that say “Los Olivos, CA.” I shop many U.S. markets, and I love antique shows, where I find the most unique items and meet such creative people. What are you tempted to take home from the store right now? MP: I take one of everything home. I can’t resist anything! You think I’m kidding, but I’m not. My home is packed full; it looks like a store. I had a French wasp waist mannequin from 1908 shipped over from France, and I love it like it’s my baby! What else would you like for potential customers to know about Avec Moi Décor? MP: We have the most fantastic selection of wellpriced women’s clothing, and we love hats, jewelry, and accessories. Our unique collections appeal to a broad range of ages, and we are known for our cashmere ponchos in every color, as well as our scarves. They’re so soft and cozy you won’t want to take them off, and they make the perfect gift. For the men in your life, we have a great men’s section with the coolest hats and cashmere scarves. I could go on forever. We truly are a destination stop, a magical place, and we offer a shopping experience like none other. 2906 Grand Avenue, Los Olivos • 805.688.5700 facebook.com/AvecMoiDecorInc

BALLARD

2017 SANTA YNEZ VALLEY DESTINATION GUIDE

THE SERENE LITTLE VILLAGE OF BALLARD HAS THE DISTINCTION OF NOT ONLY BEING THE SMALLEST OF THE SANTA YNEZ VALLEY TOWNS, BUT THE OLDEST AS WELL. NESTLED BETWEEN the surrounding towns of Los Olivos, Solvang and Santa Ynez, this mostly residential community is home to the first public school in the Valley. Designated a Santa Barbara County Historical Landmark, The Ballard Elementary School, also known as the Little Red Schoolhouse, has educated elementary school students since 1883. Early on, it was the only public building in the valley and was often used for church services, weddings, funerals, community meetings and Saturday night dances. Ballard’s beginnings go back to the early 1860s, when New Yorker George W. Lewis homesteaded 800 acres of land, which covered part of the present day towns of Ballard and Los Olivos. Mr. Lewis entrusted his dear friend, William N. Ballard, with the care of his Valley property while he spent stretches of time in Mexico tending other holdings. At the time, Mr. Ballard was the superintendent of the Concord stagecoach line, which ran between San Francisco and Yuma, Arizona. As there was no stagecoach stop between Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo, Ballard built an adobe station, which still stands today and is now a private residence in town. Upon the sudden death of William Ballard in 1881, George Lewis returned from Mexico and founded and named the historic township after his old friend. In its early days, Ballard thrived, as it was home to the only general store, post office and blacksmith shop in the Valley. Tiny Ballard boasts yet another Santa Barbara County Historical

Landmark - The Ballard Presbyterian Church, now known as Ballard Country Church. It was designed by Samuel Lyons, a local resident and justice of the peace, and constructed under his supervision in 1898, by local members of the congregation. In the midst of Mickey Rooney & Ava Gardner a drought, with little rain falling and no crops to tend, people were married in Ballard on volunteered their time and labor to construct the church. The January 10, 1942 original church bell was purchased from Montgomery Ward and Co. and stained glass windows were donated and installed in memory of early settlers to the Valley. The picturesque church with its steepled belfry and fish-scale shingles now serves as a chapel for funerals and weddings. Located in the heart of town is the splendidly romantic The Ballard Inn and Restaurant. This small luxury inn offers award-winning French-Asian cuisine, with an emphasis on fresh local flavors. This sweet spot is the perfect respite from a busy day of wine-tasting and touring in the valley.

LOS ALAMOS

2017 SANTA YNEZ VALLEY DESTINATION GUIDE

Surrounded by oak-studded hills and acres of farmland and vineyards, Los Alamos is only seven blocks long, yet boasts some serious shopping and culinary "cred". From the outside, Los Alamos looks a bit like a town that time forgot, but behind all of the historical buildings and vintage charm, it is obvious the town has kept up with the times and may even be a little ahead of the curve. The streets are dotted with a variety of awardwinning restaurants, wine tasting rooms, one-of-a-kind art galleries, antique shops, and a fun bar dedicated to fine craft beer. Los Alamos was founded in 1876, when ranchers John Bell and James Shaw each allocated a half square mile from their newly purchased land for the town site. It was once a popular stagecoach stop and home to a depot for the narrow-gauge Pacific Coast Railway, which linked San Luis Obispo to Los Olivos. The former railway depot is the lone “survivor” of the Pacific Coast Railway depots and now fittingly houses one of the top ten antique malls in the state. A historic landmark, The Union Hotel first opened its doors to roadweary stagecoach travelers in 1880. Recently renovated, the hotel still welcomes overnight guests and operates a lively wine saloon. Hit the town for a Los Alamos 3rd Saturday Stroll, held every month with seasonal themes, hosted by the town’s merchants, galleries and restaurants. To really experience the town’s Western history, don’t miss the annual Los Alamos Old Days (now in its 71st year) held every fall at the end of September. This weekend-long event aims to honor, preserve and celebrate the town’s authentic Western heritage and includes plenty of free entertainment, a two-day Peddlers Mart, an All American Classic Car Show and the “Greatest Little Small Town Parade.” For a complete listing of events, go to pages 56 & 57.

SYV GOLFING

La Purisima Golf Course 50

2017 SANTA YNEZ VALLEY DESTINATION GUIDE

W

WHILE A MAN’S BATTLE AGAINST HIMSELF IS AT THE HEART OF GOLF’S APPEAL, IT IS THE SETTING IN WHICH IT’S PLAYED THAT IS MOST WONDERFUL. Truer words were never spoken when it comes to describing three of the spectacular golf courses in the Santa Ynez Valley, Rancho San Marcos, the River Course at Alisal, and La Purisima. All three are within a few miles of each other, as you make your way through the valley from Santa Barbara to the Central Coast. Just 15 minutes from Santa Barbara is the 6,939 yard par 71 Robert Trent Jones Jr. course, Rancho San Marcos; a course that Golf Magazine named one of the Top 10 golf courses in California to play and Golf Digest gives a 4 1⁄2 star rating. Set against the backdrop of the spectacular Santa Ynez Valley, the course is steeped in history, with the cart path on hole 17 being part of the actual Pony Express Route. The standout features are a fast pace of play, the post card perfect par 3’s and the firm and fast, undulating and perfectly maintained greens. The back 9 is a must not only for the challenging 18th hole, which has a dramatically elevated tee, but a view of the Valley that will literally take your breath away - pure nature at its best. Further up the road, is the 6830 yard, par 72 River Course at Alisal, an inviting course that is approachable from a player’s standpoint and offers banquet facilities and a renowned restaurant and bar for post-round enjoyment. Designed around four lakes and the Santa Ynez River, it presents its own set of challenges just keeping your ball out of the water. The rough between fairways is modest and still playable with extremely demanding holes, such as the 7th and the 10th. The 7th is a 438 yard, par 4 with a hazard to the right and a lake on the left, which plays into the prevailing winds to a wide and shallow slightly elevated green. The 10th hole is a par 4, No. 2 handicap with a narrow fairway, hazard on the left that generally plays downwind to a narrow green protected by a large bunker on the right. This hole demands two solid shots to get home in regulation. The last four holes showcase the Santa Ynez Mountains, with the 15th, an uphill climb

SYV GOLFING against a creek and the 17th, a 105 yard gem that is surrounded by water and sand on three sides and demands an accurate wedge shot from the tee. Like Rancho, the setting is stunning; with wine vineyards on the north side of the course and the Santa Ynez River on the south - the kind of course you bring your clubs… and your camera. When you get out of the car to play La Purisima, the pros will tell you, “put on your big boy pants” because hands down this is one challenging track. On this par 72, 7,105 yard course, there are no benign holes and each and every one of them demands your full attention. Designed by worldrenowned

architect,

Robert

Muir

Graves, it’s been described as the “truest test of pure golf that our area has to offer.” The greens are lightening fast and true with some of the best par 5’s of any course, such as the 15th hole, a double dog-leg where power Rancho San Marcos: PHOTO AIDIAN BRADLEY LA PURISIMA GOLF COURSE • 3455 EAST HIGHWAY 246 • 805.735.8395 • LAPURISIMAGOLF.COM RANCHO SAN MARCOS • 4600 HIGHWAY 154 • 805.683.6334 • RSM1804.COM RIVER COURSE AT THE ALISAL • 150 ALISAL ROAD • 805.688.6042 • RIVERCOURSE.COM

hitters may run out of fairway from the tee. Other noteworthy holes are the 9th, a 230 yard par 3, which demands impeccable aim through a narrow stand of eucalyptus trees and the 18th hole, which no matter what time you play, you’re hitting into the teeth of the wind. The hot tip for keeping your score low at La Purisima is to play in the morning before the winds come up. Each course is unique and offers its own challenges, but all three provide an enjoyable and rewarding experience

regardless

of

your

handicap. A two night, three-day golf escape to the Santa Ynez Valley is one golf experience you will never forget. World-class golf, spectacular greens all in a setting you can only find in the Santa Ynez Valley. River Course at the Alisal 52

Velkommen Til Solvang E n d les s P o s s i bi li t I es Visiting Solvang is like taking a vacation to Denmark with no passport required! DISCOVER SOLVANG IN THE CENTER OF THE Santa Ynez Valley, just 35 miles FROM THE BEACHES OF SANTA BARBARA, TWO HOURS up the coast from Los Angeles and four hours south of San Francisco.

PHOTO: SOLVANGUSA.COM

In 2016, USA Today named Solvang one of the 10 best Historic Small Towns in America for its authentic Scandinavian culture and hospitality. In 2014, Solvang was named by Trivago as one of the best “Hidden European Towns in America” Solvang means “sunny field” in Danish; and was founded in 1911 by three Danish-American educators who discovered a place in the central coast of California where land was plentiful and their culture could prosper. Situated on 9,000 acres of land adjacent to the 1804 Old Mission Santa Inés, Solvang thrived and settlers carried on Denmark’s traditions of language, folk dancing, music and cuisine. As the 20th century progressed and Solvang’s population grew, more buildings began to reflect Denmark’s farm-style PHOTO: SOLVANGUSA.COM architecture - the crossbeamed bindingsvaerk, timbers framing either brick or stucco and roofing of thatch made of wood shingles cut jagged at the edges. Windmills of all sizes catch the first and last light throughout the village. Danish tradition holds that the presence of a stork on a rooftop wards off lightning and brings good luck. Just as it does in Copenhagen, Denmark’s national symbol of the “Little Mermaid” bronze sculpture (a 1/3 size authorized replica) welcomes visitors at the intersection of Mission Drive and Alisal Road. A 1/3-size replica of Copenhagen’s famous 17th-century Rundetaarn (Round Tower) at 436 Alisal Road is nestled behind one of the village’s four large windmills. The year-round chiming carillon clock tower atop 486 First Street serves as a reminder that there is always plenty of time to relax here! In 1947, idyllic Solvang was “discovered” by the media and described in PHOTO: TENLEY FOHL PHOTOGRAPHY a Saturday Evening Post feature as a “spotless COVER PHOTO: TENLEY FOHL PHOTOGRAPHY. Discover Hamlet Danish village that blooms like a rose” and Square, home of Bacon & Brine Restaurant, Sevtap Wine Tasting, shops and more at the corner of Copenhagen Drive and Second Street.

MOR T E N S E N ’ S BA K E R Y

the sweet heart of Solvang

It’s been forty years since the Frausto family began operating Mortensen’s Bakery in the heart of Solvang. The family bought the business from the original eponymous Danish owner in 1976 and has been sticking to his classic old-world recipes ever since. Here at the delicious intersection of buttery pastry and sweet fillings, traditional glass cases display rack after rack of fantastic pastries. There are strudels, Danish butter rings (the classic coffee cake with custard and almond paste), nut horns, Napoleons, eclairs, apple turnovers, raspberrycream-cheese Danish, blueberry Danish, apple Danish, cinnamon rolls, Florentines, butter cookies, macaroons, petit fours, Danish dessert waffles, cakes and quite a lot more. They ship everything, so if you’re looking for the perfect accompaniment to Christmas-morning coffee, have a pretzel-shaped kringel delivered to your door, pop it into the freezer and then simply reheat it on the big day. Everything is baked on site in the original kitchen, and there are plenty of tables where you can relax with the perfect match: a freshly baked pastry and a cappuccino, latté, or hot chocolate. And because Mortensen’s is open every day except Christmas, this is one bakery you can be sure will never “flake out” on you.

local art scene Pavlov Art Gallery offers an exceptional selection of contemporary artwork by acclaimed local artist Chris Pavlov. Born in Macedonia, Pavlov spent much of his childhood riding his bike in the mountains, enjoying his grandmother’s cooking, and studying. His parents, both medical doctors, spurred his natural passion for seeking to understand the world around him and human psyche. In his life, artwork has become his outlet and tool to explore the principles of nature and express the knowledge he’s gained from his degrees in Psychology and Philosophy. If you are lucky enough to stop by when Pavlov is in the gallery, you might be treated to an engaging academic conversation. In addition to original paintings, the gallery also offers a large collection of fine art prints and impressive ceramic works by various guest artists. 2017 SANTA YNEZ VALLEY DESTINATION GUIDE

GREEK SO REAL IT’S

For eight years, Petros Benekos has been preparing his signature HellenicCalifornia cuisine at Petros Los Olivos, in the Fess Parker Wine Country Inn. Now the widely traveled chef-owner, who was born in Greece, grew up in Italy, and began his culinary journey as a teenager working in the Greek Isles, Monaco, Cannes and Crete, is relocating. His highly regarded restaurant - one of four in Southern California - will open January 1 in Solvang. In Petros’ HellenicCalifornia cuisine, “Hellenic” refers to the authenticity of the Greek dishes he serves, in distinction to Greek restaurants. That may also serve Arabic dishes, such as hummus. The “California” part refers to dishes like the lamb tacos, which, Petros notes, marry “the best of Greece and the best of California.” The produce comes from Petros’ own farm, while the olives, olive oil, Epirus feta and other pantry essentials are imported from Greece. Phyllo, yogurt, dips, sauces and dressings are made daily, and the food is modeled on Petros’ mother’s cooking. The menu dives deep into genuine Greek food, with moussaka, souvlaki, saganaki, spanakopita, tzatziki, fresh fish, a New York steak with Romano beans, and a fetacrusted Colorado rack of lamb topped with tomato olive jus. If you’re ready for something real and true, try Petros. 487 Atterdag Road, Solvang 805.686.5455 petrosrestaurant.com VISITSYV.COM
