NAUGHTY OAK

A Mighty Good Pint

Meet Emily and Steve Kitts, proprietors of craft brewery and taproom Naughty Oak Brewing Company. The couple recently branched out and opened a second taproom in downtown Santa Ynez. With an expansive industrial interior and homey vibe and a solid line-up on tap, plan on staying for a pint or two. We got a chance to talk with Steve, the man behind the brew, about all things Naughty Oak. What inspired the leap from garage home brewing to launching a 2,400-square-foot commercial brewery/bar and now a second taproom? A: A drive to live life doing something that we enjoy. Naughty Oak - the oak seems rather obvious given your geographic location, but how about the “naughty”? A: Right on with oak symbology. The 'Naughty' has to with our decision to do things our way. The essential ingredients; water, yeast, hops, and malt - locally sourced or secret supplier from afar? A: We use high-quality ingredients grown in all corners of the world - what’s fresh & the best for the style. Given the full range of styles on tap, do you have a signature brew or one that captures the essence of Naughty Oak? A: We focus on lagers and flavorful ales because we love them and they're perfect for our locale. Our lagers match the easygoing California lifestyle, year-round sun, & cuisine - BBQ and Mexican food specifically. Our ale selection is flavor-forward and balanced rather than being overly extreme in any direction. With your flagship and rotating brews, what’s the best way for customers to sample the variety offered? A: We have five core beers that are always on tap and seven other rotating styles that keep things interesting. We offer taster flights - choose four beers or a flight of the 12 available beers. What else would you like for customers to know about Naughty Oak? A: Our motto is 'Comradery through Quality', which keeps the focus on enjoying quality beer in a relaxing atmosphere. Our weekly schedule of events maintains the vibe; live music & trivia are highlights, and special events spot the calendar. Bring in your own food and never feel rushed.

WHAT, WHEN & WHY IN THE SYV: Two hours north of Los Angeles, and a scenic four-hour drive south of San Francisco, the Santa Ynez Valley is home to six distinct communities in California’s Central Coast region. 1. T H E TO P T E N SANTA YNEZ VALLEY

1. WINE COUNTRY The Santa Ynez Valley is famous for its wineries. With a unique, transverse mountain range that funnels cool air from the Pacific Ocean, our micro-climates and terrains result in one of the most diverse grape growing regions in the world. Take a day to explore the wineries and see the vineyards firsthand.

2. TAKE A SELFIE IN SOLVANG No trip to the Santa Ynez Valley is complete without a visit to Solvang. This quaint little village is famous for its Danish bakeries and architecture and filled with photoops. Perfect the art of the selfie in front of the little red clog or one of the town’s many windmills. 3. CULINARY CRAVINGS There are so many great places to dine in the Santa Ynez Valley it can be hard to choose! Italian food aficionados will be pleased to find a handful of eateries serving up Italian favorites. Lovers of traditional American cuisine are well catered for with top-notch sandwiches and classic American steaks. If you’re looking for something with a more modern and creative flavor, the town of Los Alamos boasts innovative flavors, while the towns of Ballard and Los Olivos continue to offer romantic, candle-lit fine dining options.

4

4. CRAFT BEER If you can drag yourself away from the wineries, why not sample some of the superb local craft beers? From sours to stouts, three major breweries in the area offer award-winning brews sure to please a wide spectrum of beer connoisseurs. 5. TAKE IN A LOCAL EVENT From food-driven to family friendly, the Santa Ynez Valley hosts a number of events to bring everyone together. Regular events include painting in the vineyard at various wineries, kid crafts at local museums, and live music in the evenings on heated patios. Visit from September through December for some special events that celebrate each town’s unique history.

7.

10

6. IMMERSE YOURSELF IN LOCAL CULTURE Drop in and visit one the Valley’s museums. Discover local history and lore at the Elverhøj Museum of History and Art and The Santa Ynez Valley Historical Museum, or pop into Wildling Museum to appreciate works of art that draw inspiration from nature. If you’re looking for something a little more niche, find vintage and rare motorcycles at the Solvang Vintage Motorcycle

Museum, be dazzled by fairytales at the Hans Christian Anderson Museum, or feast your eyes on one of the west coast’s largest petroliana collections at the Mendenhall Museum. 7. DISCOVER YOUR HOME AWAY FROM HOME Seeking something different from your hotel stay? Santa Ynez Valley hotels offer a more intimate and distinctly local experience. Most hotels here could be better described as Inns, some of which have a unique Danish feel, some provide rich luxury, while some even provide a safari glamping experience. With over 30 unique lodging properties, the Valley has a price and style fit for everyone. 8. ENJOY THE GREAT OUTDOORS Need some fresh air? There’s no better way to clear your mind and relax than getting out and enjoying some of the local countryside. Figueroa Mountain is a great place to unwind and enjoy a picnic in the glorious Californian sunshine. Or if you’re feeling energetic, take a stroll through the adjacent Sedgwick Reserve by appointment, where volunteer staff guides you through the local terrain. If a family picnic is what you have in mind, head over to Nojoqui Falls Park down Alisal Road.

9. FIND ARTISAN TREASURES With specialty shops located in almost every town, you’re bound to discover a hidden treasure. Shops in Santa Ynez Valley stock a range of local artisanal products like jewelry, glassware, handcrafted shoes, leather goods, porcelain, clothing, and a range of traditional and contemporary crafts. 10. RELAX AND SAY SPAAA Why not treat yourself to a visit to one of the Santa Ynez Valley’s spa and wellness centers? Enjoy a range of wellness services including aromatherapy, Swedish massage, and hot stone therapy. The best way to enjoy these treatments is to book yourself into one of the inns that offers a spa service in their accommodation package. Now that you know what delights await you in the Santa Ynez Valley, you’ll probably need more than a weekend to take it all in! With our doors always open, you can return time and time again. The Valley will always be that special place to you and yours for years to come.

EACH OF THE SIX THRIVING TOWNS THAT are considered part of the valley, Los Olivos, Ballard, Santa Ynez, Solvang, Buellton and Los Alamos, are within a short drive of each other, and each has its own unique character that keeps visitors coming back. LOS OLIVOS: With more than thirty tasting rooms on its one main commercial street and some excellent restaurants, charming Los Olivos is the central hub of the valley wine industry. Here, you can spend a day tasting and lounging between visits to the many boutiques, antique stores and art galleries that span Grand Avenue and spill over onto the side streets. The town is the perfect mix of styles ranging from country chic to urban-influenced wine-country cool. BALLARD: The tiny burg of Ballard, situated midway between Los Olivos and Santa Ynez, began life as a stagecoach stop and has since become a highly prized bedroom community. As the appealing setting for the Ballard Inn and The Gathering Table, it’s the perfect place to disappear for a couple of days while still having easy access to any valley attraction. Don’t miss a visit to the Little Red School House. Built in 1882, it still operates today at its picturesque location on the end of a big field of grass. SANTA YNEZ: A couple of miles south, is the tiny town of Santa Ynez. From a distance, it looks like an Old West stage set, but once you arrive, the town’s authentic character reveals itself. You’ll find boot-stompin’ bars and a craft brewery featuring live music on the weekends, as well as farm-to-table restaurants serving upscale Mexican, traditional Italian, and contemporary American wine-country cuisine. And with several low-key hotels and inns here, it makes a great base camp for daily strikes all over the valley. SOLVANG: This town is the world-famous “Little Denmark” founded in 1911 by a group of Danish immigrants looking for a suitable place to build a school for their children. Danish names handed down from early settlers are still prevalent, as are Danish festivals, half-timbered buildings, decorative windmills, Danish sausages and pastries and the ever-popular and delightfully diet-busting sweet treat aebleskiver. BUELLTON: A couple of miles west of Solvang, unexpected surprises await in Buellton. On Industrial Way, you can visit a huge wine enterprise, fantastic breweries and brewpubs, a craft distillery and fine restaurants within a Frisbee throw of each other. Dining options in Buellton are plentiful and offer up everything from steaks cooked to perfection on an oak fire pit, to restaurants focusing on locavore inspired dishes, and exceptional wood-fired pizza. LOS ALAMOS: The more northerly stop is Los Alamos, which is technically separated from the SYV proper by the Santa Rita Hills. However, this gastro center is attracting foodies from far and wide and cool businesses selling sophisticated goods are sprinkled along the 200 yard-long commercial strip. The nickname "Little L.A." plays on Los Alamos’ own initials and on the stream of successful Los Angeles refugees who in recent years have set off a culinary explosion, establishing excellent, quirky restaurants, wine tasting rooms, a bakery, a tap room and more. 14

COUNTRY TOWN CITY WINE FOOD & SHOPPING CALIFORNIA HISTORY MELDS WITH MODERNDAY WINE TASTING ROOMS, ART GALLERIES AND UPSCALE SHOPS IN THIS PICTURE-PERFECT COUNTRY TOWN in the northeast part of the valley. Centered by an iconic WWI memorial flagpole monument, Victorian homes and businesses cluster nearby around the community hub at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Alamo Pintado Avenue. Vineyards, lavender farms, orchards, ranches and horse trails surround Los Olivos. It’s a laid-back place where locals sit on wooden porches and chat with friends and visitors. In the early 1860s, the town was a welcome stagecoach stop on the route that ran from San Francisco to San Diego. County Historical Landmark Mattei’s Tavern, which still stands today, was built in 1887 to house and feed those passengers. Don’t be deceived by the Victorian vibe because behind the historic doors the offerings are distinctly modern and sophisticated - elegant clothing and jewelry boutiques, antiques, art galleries, and gourmet dining. And then there’s the world-class wine tasting. Sip local vintages at FIRESTONE WALKER BARRELWORKS a tasting room - choose among more than 30 within a PHOTOS: NICK GINGOLD 5-block area. Los Olivos has something to offer the most discriminating of visitors. 16

ON SYV STYLE Santa Ynez Valley Style is unique in the sense that it is a combination of vacation retreat and wine country ease with a western/equestrian twist. It’s a whole lot of amazing wrapped into one of the most beautiful valleys on the central coast.

INTERVIEW WITH AMBER LEASE OWNER OF

WILDFLOWER WOMEN Amber Lease is one busy woman. She's a mother of two, personal stylist and owner of Los Olivos boutique Wildflower Women and adorable store-within-a-store Sandbox Kids. And she manages to artfully curate a covetable collection of clothing, accessories and lifestyle goods for women, babies and children. Here she offers insight into one of the SYV’s essential fashion stops.

Damselfly Collective - the original soy based quote candle

Kinsley Armelle natural gemstone bracelets with agate and geodes

A well - curated selection of eyewear from Diff Eyewear and Tom Ford is available

THE INSPIRATION As a single, on the go mom of two boys, I understand the need to develop a fashionable yet effortless look. I have always been a fashion enthusiast, so I took my mid-western values along with my California girl approach to life and started creating stylish wearable looks for the everyday woman.

The Lawrence classic straw hat from Banner Hats

THE GOODS I do all the buying for the stores and am very selective regarding what I bring in. As a personal stylist, I know how to edit each collection to include a wide array of women. I typically go for the classics and timeless earth tones, simple cuts and timeless fits and take pride in offering quality and value in every item. The heavenly soft cashmere and dreamy silk pieces from Repeat cashmere, an exclusive to Wildflower Women, is an excellent example of that!

THE GOAL My goal is to offer a taste of the experience of a bygone era - like the traditional department stores and women’s boutiques my mother and grandmother used to take me to. They were kind, sweet, and unique to their time and respective places. At Wildflower Women I hope to offer a sense of what it was like to shop at these stores in their heyday.

Shop from a full collection of boots and handbags from The Frye Company

A LITTLE HISTORY My family owned Johnson's For Children clothing store, so I grew up in retail. There I learned the ins and outs of the retail world. Because children’s clothing was second nature to me, I first opened Sandbox Kids in 2009 and a few years later developed the women’s concept, which became Wildflower Women. YNEZ COWBOYS, CULTURE & CUISINE IN THE VINTAGE TOWNSHIP OF SANTA YNEZ, WITH ITS PERIOD-STYLE FALSE-FRONT BUILDING FACADES, FEED STORES AND RANDOM HORSES HITCHED to posts, it’s sometimes hard to tell if it’s 2018 or 1884. However, this sophisticated cowboy town boasts plenty of conveniences for modern-day trail riders. The streets, with horse shoe-embedded crosswalks, are lined with a variety of clothing boutiques, home decor stores, galleries, restaurants and even an original California honky-tonk saloon. If you have an appetite, this is the place to be, as the dining options range from classic burgers, pancakes and waffles, to steaks, seafood, regional Italian fare, Latin fusion and locavore cuisine. Don’t miss the Santa Ynez Valley Historical Society Museum and Parks-Janeway Carriage House for a fascinating dose of Old West heritage and to see one of the finest collections of authentic horse-drawn vehicles in the West. The Chumash Casino Resort, adjacent to the township, offers 24/7 gaming, live entertainment, dining and luxurious accommodations. Cyclists gravitate to Santa Ynez for a world-class training center, tours or just the chance to ride a bike along quiet country roads. There’s plenty to see, do and eat in the town that gave the Valley its name. 30

S

OME MEN DON’T LIKE TO SHOP; THEY CLEARLY HAVEN’T BEEN TO RANCH MEN’S STORE. LOCATED IN DOWNTOWN SANTA YNEZ,

this apparel and specialty shop definitely goes beyond the basics and then some. It’s a head to toe hearty smorgasbord of style - raw Wranglers, washed Levis, North Face jackets, buttery soft polos from Faherty, rugged sandstone duck cloth workwear from Carhartt, button-downs from Johnnie-O, Frye boots, Timex watches, Jack Black grooming products, and so much more. Then there’s the big boy toys for the avid outdoorsman - an impressive assortment of Helle and SOG hunting knives, Hults Bruk hatchets, Nordic pocket saws and other cool guy gear. There’s also a small section devoted to apparel for boys and babies. While the offerings are diverse, from classic, iconic brands to under-the-radar up and coming fresh collections, they all share a common thread of down-to-earth quality. Ranch Men’s Store is a retail gamechanger in the Valley area, as it strikes a level balance between form, function, fun, and fashion. Be it a hard day’s work on the ranch or a night out on the town, they’ve got you covered.

SIBLING CHEFS HONOR VALLEY HISTORY & COMMUNITY G ROW I N G U P I N A M E S , I OWA , and spending time on the family farm and in their home garden, Jeff and Matt Nichols learned some things about community, tradition, and good ingredients. Last year, the chef-owners behind Brothers Restaurant the Red Barn in Santa Ynez and Sides Hardware and Shoes in Los Olivos celebrated twenty years as restaurateurs in the Santa Ynez Valley. Their first endeavor was The Storybook Inn in Solvang, followed by a decade of operating Mattei’s Tavern in Los Olivos. They’ve seen the valley grow - the Vintners Association had a few dozen members in 1996 and now has more than two hundred - while honoring its past, emblematically housing their restaurants in historic buildings. “It seems right to embrace the history of the area,” Jeff says. “There are so many families, ranches, and farms that have been here for so long, and these buildings have been part of the community’s evolution.” “One thing we learned early on is that every historic space we went into needed work - maybe a haircut and new clothes - but none of them needed their personality changed,” says Matt. “We tried not to force anything onto them.” The brothers reflect the community right down to their cuisine. “We’ve always leaned toward offering our guests what they seem to enjoy most,” Jeff says. “Our simple upbringing combined with sophisticated experience in the restaurant industry somehow created what our style is,” Matt adds. “We take great ingredients and keep it simple, and we work hard at being consistent, so that when someone orders their favorite dish, it’s exactly the same every time.” Some of their loyal staff have been with them a decade or more. “They’re part of our family, and we couldn’t succeed without them,” Jeff says, adding, “I remember having this moment once. After growing up in Iowa and living in France and L.A. and other places, I was thinking, Wow, this is home. This is where I’m meant to be.” That identity with place translates into warm and welcoming dining for all.

“We’ve always leaned toward offering our guests what they seem to enjoy most.” -Jeff

RD SMALL TOWN BIG CHARM THE SERENE VILLAGE OF BALLARD IS THE OLDEST AND SMALLEST OF THE REGION’S TOWNS AND HOLDS SOME OF the valley’s most treasured gems, including two Santa Barbara County Historical Landmarks. The Ballard Elementary School, also known as the “Little Red Schoolhouse” has been educating local children since 1883. The other noteworthy landmark is the picturesque Ballard Presbyterian Church - now Ballard Country Church - erected in 1889 the church is replete with a classic steepled belfry, stained glass windows, and fish-scale shingles. The community is also home to The Ballard Inn & The Gathering Table – one of the most romantic and luxurious B&Bs in the region where delectable award-winning French-Asian cuisine is savored. It’s well worth a visit to Ballard to experience the serenity and charm of a well-preserved country burg. 36

ALAMOS OLD WEST HERITAGE NEW FOODIE SCENE SURROUNDED BY RANCHES, FARMS AND VINEYARDS AT THE NORTHERN “ENTRY” TO THE SANTA YNEZ VALLEY, LOS ALAMOS IS LOCATED AT THE JUNCTION of US Highway 101 and State Route 135. Bell Street, the main thoroughfare, is only seven blocks long yet reflects as much Old West heritage as any small town on California’s Central Coast. Founded in 1876 and named in Spanish for “the cottonwoods” that still grace the area - it looks and feels vintage yet boasts a burgeoning food, wine, arts & antique scene. One-of-a-kind lodging includes a Victorian-style bed & breakfast with six themed suites and a modern motor court with a view. Buildings old and new house art galleries, antique shops, and wine tasting rooms along with a surprising variety of restaurants for every type of taste from locavore to carnivore. During the last weekend of September, Los Alamos Old Days honors the town’s western heritage with a celebration including an arts & crafts fair, BBQ, car show, dance, and parade – an excellent time to wrangle a visit with free fun for the whole family. 38

Expert Opinion

IS FOR

HIKE

WE ASKED local hiking expert and founder of Santa Barbara County Hikers, Curt Cragg, to share one of his favorites hikes. Lover’s Loop Trail is part of the Midland Schools Trail system and rewards with lovely grass and oakstudded hillsides and views. Hikers can do a small portion of this trail for a leisurely hike or the entire loop for a more challenging trek. The stats - Distance - 0.8 miles for the easy short loop; a moderate 1.2 miles to end of meadow; 2.7 miles across and down to the creek; a moderately strenuous 3.65 miles for the entire loop. Permit required. For permit information, directions to the trailhead and other great hikes go to sbtrails.org/maps/Midland-TrailMap-2016.pdf

Hiking is one of the best

ways to drink in the beauty of a region, and the SYV’s extensive network of trails affords hikers of all ages and abilities a perfect taste of the area’s splendor. Area trails are bursting with natural beauty and provide access to everything from wildflower-blanketed hillsides and commanding ocean views to more mellow walks through the endless acres of vineyards.

Walk the Vines

IF BELLYING up to a tasting room bar is not your thing, and you’d rather raise your heart rate along with a glass, then consider a vineyard hike. Buttonwood Farm, Winery & Vineyard (buttonwoodwinery.com) offers two annual treks around their beautiful, sustainably farmed vineyard. Taste grape varietals right off the vine, sample the current vintage and then make your way to the vineyard pond and enjoy a seasonal, farm-fresh lunch. There’s even an option for your four-legged companions as Zaca Mesa (zacamesa.com) hosts annual spring and fall Dog Hikes in the Vineyards. Bring your furry friends and accompany the winemakers on a walking tour of the vineyards and enjoy wine and a catered BBQ lunch.

HORSING AROUND T H E VA L L E Y

LONG BEFORE CARS AND ROADS transported people around Valley and into the surrounding backcountry, horses and trails did. The western heritage, still honored today, remains deeply ingrained in the SYV culture. It’s not unusual to see a few trusty steeds hitched to a post outside of a local restaurant while their riders enjoy some farm fresh fare. And thankfully, for visitors who didn’t happen to ride into town on horseback, Santa Ynez Valley has a variety of top-notch, qualified local outfitters and guides to introduce everyone, from first-time “city-slickers” to seasoned equestrians, to the joys of exploring the local landscape in true Valley fashion. Enjoy a relaxing ride through breathtaking vineyards and working ranches, picnic in style with a gourmet lunch, take an early morning ride into the hills and cozy up to a crackling campfire for an authentic western breakfast, or end the day with a ride off into the sunset and a glass of local wine.

WORLD CLASS GOLF, SPECTACULAR GREENS IN AN OLD CALIFORNIA SETTING.

RANCHO SAN MARCOS Designed by legendary golf architect Robert Trent Jones Jr., Rancho San Marcos became the talk of the community by offering a world class golf course on 300 spectacular acres. This course is both a treasure to behold and a strategic challenge that no golfer can resist. The 6,939-yard course offers stunning views of the Santa Ynez River Valley, distant furrowed peaks, and eagles soaring above Lake Cachuma without a trace of urban development in sight. Rancho San Marcos, tucked deep into the valley floor of the Santa Ynez Mountains, has kept the essence of the old ranch, which was located here since the Spanish land grant of 1804. Gentle mounds define the manicured fairways and bentgrass greens accented by mature live oaks, native sycamores and elderberry trees, creating a "must play" golf experience for all. At 6,830 yards the layout is challenging, but not punishing. The strategic placement of a variety of hazards rewards length & accuracy without severely penalizing recreational golfers. A challenging test of skill and character, La Purisima at 7,105 yards rewards the bold and leaves the recently-hooked newcomer loving the game even more. A BRIEF HISTORY OF

W I N E IN THE SYV

Horses and cattle were once the main cash crops of the Santa Ynez Valley, a legacy of the Spanish rancho days. But when visionary winemakers began planting vinifera and exploring the area’s varied terrain in the 1970s, a sea of change was quickly afoot. Oh sure, you can still see thoroughbred horses running in green pastures here, as well as lavender farms and some of the best organic produce anywhere. But these days, wine is king - and queen and president and prime minister, too. Vines flourish from the valley floor to mountainside plots 1,500 feet above it. Tasting rooms and restaurants in the towns of Santa Ynez, Solvang, Los Olivos, Ballard, Buellton, and Los Alamos attract visitors from around the world, who come to taste spectacular wines and enjoy this gorgeous part of the planet.

1956: Jim and Mary Dierberg begin renovating one of the oldest vineyard properties in Missouri prior to moving west and establishing their SB County vineyards in 1996.

1993: On Thanksgiving a year after their tiny inaugural harvest of grapes from Viognier vines planted accidentally on their land, the Sunstone family enjoys their first bottle of estate wine.

1989: Artist Seburn Zorthian paints the first Buttonwood label. She has painted every one since.

1962 Pierre Lafond opens Santa Barbara Winery, the first winery since Prohibition.

1970 Central Valley grower Louis Lucas partners with Al Gagnon and Dale Hampton to establish the 800-acre Tepusquet Vineyard, one of the earliest in the region.

1964 UC Davis horticulturalists Uriel Nielson and Bill De Mattei establish the county’s first commercial vinifera vineyards in the Santa Maria Valley. Ten years later, major Northern California producers are purchasing their Chardonnay grapes.

1782 Father Junípero Serra plants the area’s first grapevine cuttings, establishing mission vineyards in what is now the city of Santa Barbara. 50

LAY OF THE LAND Most mountain ranges run in a north-south direction, but the coastal San Raphael and Santa Ynez mountains that form the Santa Ynez Valley and the greater Santa Barbara County wine region run east to west. As such, they act like a funnel for cool air and fog from the Pacific Ocean, creating myriad micro-climates at various elevations suitable for a wide range of varietal grapes. Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and other grapes that like hot days and cold nights predominate in the eastern region, while consistent, cool weather to the west favors such Burgundy grapes as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Both regions provide long growing seasons and extended “hang time” for the fruit, allowing their sugars and acids to develop slowly and fully, essential for great wines.

2007: Lucy the black Labrador retriever is born, later to serve as the GoPro-wearing namesake videographer on the Wandering Dog website video.

2016: Kalyra Wines opens Helix in Buellton, a tasting room focused on pouring sparkling and dessert wines.

2015: First release in Standing Sun’s Wine Art Music Project with artist Felipe Molina and Counting Crows front man, Adam Duritz.

2012 Richard Sanford, who discovered that the Santa Rita Hills were ideally suited for Pinot Noir, becomes the only Santa Barbara County winemaker to be inducted into the Culinary Institute of America’s Hall of Fame in Napa.

1983 The Santa Barbara Vinters Association is founded in a decade that sees epic growth in terms of vineyards and new wineries. 1973 Brothers Stephen and Bob Miller plant Bien Nacido vineyard, today one of the valley’s most-famous and enduring sources of superb cool-weather grapes.

2004 The wine-centric romantic comedy Sideways puts Santa Barbara wine country on the map for millions and gives local Pinot Noirs, in particular, their place in the Hollywood sun. VISITSYV.COM

BUTTONWOOD WINERY & VINEYARD A 50-year-old family-run organic farm, 106 acres of grapes and estate-grown varietals made from them - that’s Buttonwood Winery & Vineyard, a relaxing place that has long been operating according to the vision of the late Betty Williams, who purchased the property in 1968 and worked the land according to “good practices for people, animals and the earth.” They have a great tasting room and outside garden seating areas, and note that wine club members get first crack at specialty wines and events, including seasonal chefs’ farm dinners, the bi-annual crawfish boil in May, the July Rockin’ our Roots concert, and plenty of other draws that will make you want to do as they suggest at the farm and “Come on in.” buttonwoodwinery.com 52

DIERBERG VINEYARD

KALYRA WINERY

SAARLOOS + SONS

With deep roots in one of Missouri’s oldest vineyards, Jim and Mary Dierberg moved west to grow the European grape varieties they love. Now, with Dierberg Vineyard in the cool Santa Maria AVA and Drum Canyon Vineyard in the adjacent nearly-as-cool Sta. Rita Hills AVA (where vineyards rise 400 feet above their tasting room), the Dierbergs have roots in some of the best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay terroir in the nation. Add Star Lane Vineyard in the warmer Happy Canyon AVA, and they also produce great Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Sauvignon Blanc. Pursuing a “250-year” plan, they are dedicated to providing careful stewardship of the land, working with winemaker Tyler Thomas to pursue the fullest expression of grapes and terroir, and bottling the results proudly under the Dierberg and Star Lane labels. dierbergvineyard.com

The Kalyra Winery is for people who like their wine with a generous helping of friends and fun. With Australian expat winemaker Mike Brown at the helm, the “She’ll be right,” attitude pervades the property. “There’s a laid-back feeling to the tasting room,” says RaeLynn Milley. “If you’re new to wine, this is a great place to learn about it. We’re not uptight. You can bring your dog and your kids, hang out all day and unplug from the world.” Kalyra has events going all the time. The summer-night film series on the lawn always end with Sideways, the romantic comedy that featured the bar at Kalyra. There are kids’ movies, too. The annual Great Grape Stomp is a harvest tradition, with music, food trucks and plenty of grapes for everyone to stomp with purplefooted passion. kalyrawinery.com

In a world where bedrock values can be hard to find, Saarloos + Sons offers a welcoming embrace of what matters. “Honor + Prepare” is their motto. It refers to honoring the past, the family (three generations here so far), the future, the land, hard work, well-made wine, and even failure when it comes along. What started as a Fuji apple farm is now planted with 100,000 vines, hand picked every harvest. The resulting wines - terroir-driven, 100-percent estate grown, including ports and distinctive special occasion wines - are available at the tasting room on Grand Avenue in Los Olivos. There you’ll also find a lemonade stand, a photo booth, and treats for sale from Enjoy Cupcakes. The wine labels - sepia photographs of Saarlooses - are small, distinctive works of art. saarloosandsons.com

2018 SANTA YNEZ VALLEY DESTINATION GUIDE

SANTA MARIA VALLEY AVA (1981): Fog and wind keep temperatures cool, especially in the western part of this near-coast AVA, Santa Barbara’s first. Known for cool-weather-loving Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, it also produces excellent Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Nebbiolo and Cabernet Franc.

HAPPY CANYON AVA (2009): The most eastern growing region is also the warmest, with hills reducing ocean breezes and fog. Cabernet Sauvignon and warm-weather styles of Sauvignon Blanc predominate, with extensive plantings of Syrah as well.

SANTA YNEZ VALLEY AVA (1983): The largest AVA in SB County contains four sub-AVAs. Predominantly east-west oriented, it is cut by hills that produce numerous microclimates. World-class Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grow in the cooler western part of the AVA, while Rhône and Bordeaux varieties thrive in the warmer, eastern areas.

BALLARD CANYON AVA (2013): Windy, foggy, and with wildly shifting temperatures, Ballard Canyon occupies a middle ground between the coolest and warmest parts of the valley. The Rhône grape Syrah rules here, accounting for more than half the planted acreage, and local Syrahs are every bit the equal of the French counterparts.

STA. RITA HILLS AVA (2001): The odd spelling of “Saint” is the result of a settlement involving a Chilean AVA of the same name. Slightly warmer than the adjacent Santa Maria AVA. This is Pinot Noir country, which makes up nearly two-thirds of the vineyard acreage, followed by Chardonnay.

LOS OLIVOS DISTRICT AVA (2016): Containing the towns of Los Olivos, Solvang and Santa Ynez. Generally lower in elevation and less precipitous than other SB County AVAs, its moderate climate and microclimates allow a range of grapes to thrive, including Italian and Spanish varieties.

WANDERING DOG WINE BAR

Standing Sun Wines owner John Wright likes it when people gather over wine, art and music, so he offers all three at his winery in a burgeoning industrial corner of Buellton. “I want people to have an experience,” he says. “Wine is more than what’s in the glass. It’s a process, and here you can watch production while tasting wine.” Or while listening to bands Wright brings in from around the country. Ticket prices are reasonable, food trucks provide the grinds, and the stage is a professional setup amid the barrels. You can also sip while checking out equally wide-ranging art in the gallery; October featured works by Felipe Molina, album cover artist for Counting Crows. Got kids? Dogs? Bring ’em. Everyone’s welcome. And the wine? It’s good, with the grapes in every varietal bottle sourced from a single vineyard. standingsunwines.com

Sunstone Winery has been a valley landmark since the Rice family planted their first organic vineyard in 1990. It has one of only three underground cellaring caves in the valley. Its villa was built with 85-percent reclaimed materials, including French limestone from the 18th and 19th centuries. “There is a sense of authenticity here,” says Anna Rice. “People feel a sense of calm and escape, of being transported.” The winemaking team focuses on perfecting estate varietals Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Viognier, plus Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from vineyards closer to the ocean in the Santa Maria and Sta. Rita Hills AVAs. A great way to enjoy the results is at a private tasting experience with a wine host, maybe in the cave or the lavender courtyard. Sip, learn, and love for an authentically good time. sunstonewinery.com

In a co-op winemaking space in Lompoc, Angela Soleno turns fine local grapes into exquisite smallbatch Bordeaux and other red blends. Because this dynamo single mom is essentially a one-woman company, the tasting room is open only on weekends from 11-6 or by appointment. She offers private winemaker-led barrel tastings, a Library Tasting Experience, and Winemaker for a Day, or the “Blending and Bottling Boot Camp.” Guests take wine from the barrel, put it into vials and make their own blends. “It can be casual and fun, or they can dig in and learn,” she says. “I enjoy seeing them understand what they’re looking for and how to taste properly.” Her wines are a cut above. She uses no artificial tannins or fining agents and doesn’t release them for at least five years. This is quality - deep, red and rich. turiyawines.com

“Something for everyone” could be the motto at the Wandering Dog Wine Bar in Solvang, which the Santa Ynez Valley News Press voted the Best Wine Tasting in the valley three years running. You’ll find wines from local vintners to sip by the glass or in flights (all white, all red, as focused as you’d like). There’s also a beer flight, plus high-end imports. Or try one of their custom shrub cocktails. These unique vinegar-based mixers, such as the peach-jalapeño shrub or strawberry-ginger shrub, are served with wine-based spirits and topped off with club soda for a refreshing and unique take on the classic cocktail. “No one else in the valley makes these,” says co-owner Susan Williams. Add cheese and charcuterie, and you can spend an entire afternoon here. wanderingdogwinebar.com VISITSYV.COM

celebrates fifty years as a family-run organic farm, dating to when the late Betty Williams purchased the property in 1968. It’s a family that refers to wine as a the “fifth food group,” and to the farm as “an ecosystem of all the goodness on the table, grown and raised with care and with sustainably in mind. We revere and honor the earth by giving back what we take.” The 39 producing acres yield wines for every season, every palate, and every cuisine. They produce estate-grown Sauvignon Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Viognier (from a single row), Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Grenache and Syrah. Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are sourced in the perfectly cool Santa Rita Hills AVA. Given the upcoming jubilee, 2018 is an especially good time to stop by - and keep in mind that wine club members get first access to a slew of celebratory events and specialty wines. But no pressure. “We encourage visitors to just breathe,” says winemaker, Karen Steinwachs, “to sit in the natural gardens or the patio and enjoy the wines, the ambiance and the hospitality. There is a sense of longevity here from the decades of farming, but in a modern and approachable way, and with no pretense.”

Velkommen Til Solvang California's Denmark

VISITING SOLVANG IS LIKE TAKING A VACATION TO DENMARK, YET PASSPORTS AREN’T REQUIRED! DISCOVER SOLVANG IN THE CENTER OF THE SANTA YNEZ VALLEY, JUST 35 miles from the beaches of Santa Barbara, two hours up the coast from Los Angeles and four hours south of San Francisco. In 2016, USA Today named Solvang one of the 10 Best Historic Small Towns in America for its authentic Scandinavian culture and hospitality. In 2017, Solvang was named by Expedia Travel as one of the top 50 cities to vacation in North America. Solvang means “sunny field” in Danish; and was founded in 1911 by three Danish-American educators who discovered a place in the central coast of California where land was plentiful and their culture could prosper. Situated on 9,000 acres of land adjacent to the 1804 Old Mission Santa Inés, Solvang thrived and settlers carried on Denmark’s traditions of language, folk dancing, music and cuisine. As the 20th century progressed and Solvang’s population grew, more buildings began to reflect Denmark’s farm-style architecture—the the crossbeamed bindingsvaerk, timbers framing either brick or stucco and roofing of thatch made of wood shingles cut jagged at the edges. Danish tradition holds that the presence of a stork on a rooftop wards off lightning and brings good luck. Just as it does in Copenhagen, Denmark’s national symbol of the “Little Mermaid” bronze sculpture (a 1/2-size authorized replica) welcomes visitors at the intersection of Mission Drive and Alisal Road. PHOTO: SOLVANGUSA.COM A 1/3-size replica of Copenhagen’s famous 17thcentury Rundetårn (Round Tower) at 436 Alisal Road is nestled behind one of the four large windmills that catch the first and last light throughout the village. The year-round chiming carillon bells atop 1697 Copenhagen Drive serves as a reminder that there is always plenty of time to relax here! In 1947, idyllic Solvang was “discovered” by the media and described in a Saturday Evening Post feature as a “spotless Danish village that blooms like a rose” and enticed travelers to experience it for themselves. In 2009, Solvang was honored with the prestigious “Preserve America Community” award by the National Advisory Council on Historic Preservation. Solvang celebrated its Centennial anniversary in 2011 with year-long festivities including a visit from Henrik, His Royal Highness PHOTO: ALISAL.COM The Prince Consort of Denmark, the fourth such COVER PHOTO: KEVIN STEELE PHOTOGRAPHY. FROM CALIFORNIA HEAT IN SOLVANG TO ARCTIC COLD ON THE NORTH POLES When Danish adventurer and Solvang resident René Gross Kærskov decided to parachute out of a helicopter over the exact North Pole in 2008 in his own fundraising event to help the struggling polar bears, it started an adventure into a whole new dimension of TIME. Through connections of a wildlife photographer, Kærskov arranged with the Russians, who operate a camp on the Arctic ice, to fly him up to the camp and then continue by helicopter to the North Pole.

Before that, he says, “It was pretty much pancakes.” Nothing wrong with that, of course, and the café has them, but here, the choices include lemon ricotta pancakes with mixed-berry compote. You can get classic eggs and bacon, or Eggs Rascal - kalamata olive toast topped with artichoke spread and poached eggs - or the killer avocado toast, with chili flakes, feta, lemon and olive oil, and enjoy it in Solvang’s prettiest garden patio. For a truly great start to the day, add a tangerine mimosa, a classic mimosa, or the “Pink Rascal,” a mix of sparkling wine with raspberry lemonade. Got a group? Then get a pitcher. And over a sunny lunch, it’s hard to beat a cold shandy - beer, lemonade and muddled mint - to go with halibut fish and chips, a West Coast Reuben sandwich on marbled rye, or fish tacos with corn tortillas, cabbage, avocado, sriracha aioli, pickled red onion and pineapple pico de gallo. And who doesn’t love a place that’s so dog friendly it has a menu that includes Beastly Bits and Sophisti-Bits (“for the sophisticated beast.”) Two legs or four, breakfast or lunch, the café has you covered seven days a week.

A shopper’s paradise, Solvang’s streets are filled with more than 150 stores for excellent retail therapy. To learn more about Solvang’s heritage, visit the Elverhøj Museum of History & Art with its delightfully decorated period rooms, the Wildling Museum of Art & Nature, the Hans Christian Andersen Museum, the Solvang Museum of Amber and Great Hall of the Danes at The Copenhagen House as well as the national historic landmark 1804 Old Mission Santa Inés.

xperience Solvang’s culinary evolution helmed by imaginative chefs offering innovative palate-pleasers. The Los Angeles Times reveals, “Solvang's restaurants have traditionally played it safe (aebleskiver, Danish pancake balls, remain a popular treat), but new establishments are pushing the envelope.” The chefs of Solvang are not only offering tempting sweets but also the most savory meats, fishes, charcuterie and decadent dishes. So, what’s on the menu? Consider . . . hand-made pasta “Bolognese” made with ragu of washimi short rib, wild boar and tomato (Cecco Ristorante) from third-generation Chef David Cecchini, one of Solvang’s early 2000’s culinary “evolutionaries”; who, along with the creative chefs at Root 246 at Hotel Corque continue to proffer cutting-edge cuisine such as "lamb lollies” with chimichurri, market salad and shaved parmesan. How about some butter fish marinated in tequila with agave nectar (Alisal Guest Ranch & Resort)? Or sous vide and butter roasted filet of beef with truffle puree (First & Oak at The Mirabelle Inn) by Chef Steven Snook who worked with Gordon Ramsey in London. Capture an octopus sashimi with squid ink vinaigrette and spicy yuzu aioli (The Gathering Table at Ballard Inn) from the French-Asian fusion mind-meld of Chef Budi Kazali. Private Chef/Caterer Louise Smith is known for her menu creativity and beloved for her gourmet cheesecakes - think marbled pumpkin with caramelized gingersnap crust or peanut butter with chocolate wafer crust. Slurp a seafood hotpot with Pacific white shrimp, clams, scallops, linguiça sausage and saffron broth (Mad & Vin at The Landsby) or buttermilk marinated fried chicken with mac n' cheese (Succulent Café Wine Charcuterie). From the inspired, stylish and tasty, there’s much more seasonal, fresh fare to experience now. With agricultural roots dating back to Solvang’s founding families in 1911, abundant sunshine and a crop-friendly climate with a year-round growing season; the farm-to-table way of eating has long been a way of life here. Served in romantic hideaways, family-friendly diners, rustic pubs, casual cafes plus plenty of al fresco dining options - all paired with wine from the area’s 125+ awardwinning vineyards as well as locally-brewed craft beers - Solvang’s culinary opportunities have attracted top chefs who are creating foodie inspirations every day. And don’t miss specialty food shops which include everything from olive oils and balsamic vinegars, fruit-based vinegar “shrubs” to fresh-made daily sorbets, Swedish polkagris candies, old-world fudge and authentic-recipe Danish chocolates at Ingeborg’s. On your culinary calendar, be sure to include Santa Ynez Valley Restaurant Week ( January); Taste of Solvang (March), Danish Days (September) and dozens of wine-maker dinners and events in every season. Held every month, Solvang 3rd Wednesday is a perfect time to walk, shop, wine and dine especially with select restaurants featuring three-course menus and the immensely popular 3rd Wednesday Wine & Beer Walk offers a tasting opportunity where you can enjoy two tastings at five places around the village. For the latest dining and tasting sensational destinations of the culinary evolution, visit www.SolvangUSA.com

Solvang’s traditional Danish culinary heritage continues with specialties such as aebleskiver (Danish pancake balls served with raspberry jam and powdered sugar), frikadeller (meatballs), medisterpolse (Danish sausage), rødkaal (red cabbage), smørrebrød (open-faced sandwiches) and smorgaasbord (buffet) at longtime favorite places such as Bit o’Denmark, Paula’s Danish Pancake House, Red Viking and The Solvang Restaurant. Be bold and explore all five authentic Danish bakeries that make treats with a lot of love, just as they are in Denmark, such as butter cookies (greatto-go), real whip cream napoleons, chocolate éclairs, traditional kringles (shaped like pretzels), marzipan, almond rings, cakes of all sizes and shapes, hearty breads, even gingerbread houses and of course, mouth-watering flaky pastries.

ENJOY THEATER UNDER

THE STARS Professional theatre has been a part of Central Coast life for over five decades thanks to PCPA – Pacific Conservatory Theatre and the myriad of performing arts enthusiasts who continue to support the arts.

NEWSIES

PCPA was founded in 1964, and the Marian Theater was built in Santa Maria in 1968. Three years later, the company was invited by Roger Neilsen of the Solvang Businessmen’s Association to stage a production of Hamlet in Solvang’s Hans Christian Andersen Park. It played to sold out performances that year, and the next. Support to establish a permanent theatre in the valley quickly grew. Nelisen assembled a passionate committee consisting of Earl Petersen, Royce Lewellyn, Erling and Sue Pohls, Johannes Jaeger, John and Jan Severson, Vince Evans, together with the Santa Ynez Valley Arts Association and many others, they began to lay the foundation for the Festival Theater. In the summer of 1974, through an astounding outpouring of civic initiative, fund raising and hard labor, the Solvang Festival Theater BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
