news TOURISM RESTARTS: 40% OF DESTINATIONS HAVE NOW EASED TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS The responsible restart of tourism is underway around the world as growing numbers of destinations ease COVID-19 related travel restrictions and adapt to the new reality. According to the latest analysis from the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), 40% of all destinations worldwide have now eased the restrictions they placed on international tourism in response to COVID-19. The United Nations specialized agency for tourism has been monitoring global responses to the pandemic from the start of the crisis. This latest outlook, recorded on 19th July, is up from 22% of destinations that had eased restrictions on travel by 15th June and the 3% previously observed by 15th May. It confirms the trend of a slow but continuous adaptation and responsible restart of international tourism. At the same time, however, of the 87 destinations that have now eased travel restrictions, just four have completely lifted all restrictions, while 83 have eased them while keeping some measures such as the partial closure of borders in place. This way, global tourism can gain people's trust and confidence, essential foundations as we work together to adapt to the new reality we now face. Responsible restart is possible UNWTO Secretary-General ZurabPololikashvili said: “The restart of tourism can be undertaken responsibly and in a way that safeguards public health while also supporting businesses and livelihoods. As destinations continue to ease restrictions on travel, international cooperation is of paramount importance. This way, global tourism can gain people's trust and confidence, essential foundations as we work together to adapt to the new reality we now face.” According to the UNWTO report, destinations with a higher dependency on tourism are more likely to be easing restrictions on travel: Of the 87 destinations that have eased restrictions recently, 20 are Small Island Developing States (SIDS), many of which depend on tourism as a central pillar of employment, economic growth and development. The report also shows that around half (41) of all those destinations that have eased restrictions are in Europe, confirming the leading role of the region for the responsible restart of tourism. news WTTC launches Insurance Guidelines for the Travel & Tourism sector London, UK: The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has unveiled its Insurance Guidelines to rebuild global consumer confidence to help encourage the return of travelling. The guidelines are designed to drive the return of safe, healthy and responsible travel and ensure the insurance sector is fit for purpose to operate for travellers in the 'new normal' of the COVID-19 world. Insurance is a vital part of the Travel & Tourism experience, providing peace of mind and risk mitigation to consumers, suppliers, and organisations across the Travel & Tourism sector. These new guidelines were compiled based on input from leading companies, many of which have partnered with trusted experts in public health and governments to support safe, healthy, and responsible travels. The guidelines aim to promote consistent standards across all relevant functions with an increased focus on health and safety, in line with what travellers need and expect. They provide practical insights and guidelines around insurance for the Travel & Tourism private sector to equip them with the knowledge of risks, what insurance coverage they need to look for, and how to attain appropriate coverage for their needs. Gloria Guevara, WTTC President & CEO, said: “Insurance is vital for travellers to have peace of mind and confidence to travel and it is now more important than ever to create confidence for consumers travelling in the 'new normal' of COVID-19. “We have worked closely with key players across the travel insurance industry to make recommendations to ensure individual travellers, groups and organisations can feel safe and confident enough to travel, sure in the knowledge they have the protection they need. “The measures outlined in our Insurance Guidelines should help guide travel insurers to create products which contain every contingency needed offer reassurance to enable travel to recommence to those countries which have relaxed their border controls and travel restrictions.” Robin Ingle, MSH Ingle International, Travel Navigator and Novus Health CEO, said: “The survival and growth of Travel & Tourism is important in many ways, particularly for the global economy and for promoting crosscultural understanding transcending borders. “The COVID-19 global pandemic has made governments, travellers, and the Travel & Tourism industry across the world experience how deeply integrated and interdependent we are on each other. “Insurance protects and supports the operations of these stakeholders and thus plays a key part in the successful transition of the industry into the 'new normal'. WTTC and its insurance, risk management and travel assistance members have worked closely to develop guidelines and an FAQ to address insurance-related issues and considerations. “These guidelines will be an evolving document, and we will be on hand to answer questions to help guide and assist the industry toward a successful restart.” 10

Beth Godlin, President, Aon Affinity Travel Practice, and member of the WTTC Task Force said: “The benefits that Travel Insurance and Assistance products offer have always been an important part of the travel experience. WTTC divided the new guidance into four pillars including operational and staff preparedness; ensuring a safe experience; rebuilding trust and confidence; innovation; and implementing enabling policies. Highlights of recommendations announced today include:
·All organizations to provide risk management plans, including how they aim to combat COVID-19, to insurers ·Organizations to make sure their plans are thorough, practical, and simple to follow ·All staff to be informed of protective measures being taken, which include insurance products that will cover them
·
Insurers to ensure audits identify and plug gaps in and source the right partners and providers to ensure appropriate coverage
·Insurers to create blanket insurance and crisis management coverage to give comfort to customers ·Ensure there is enhanced awareness of the terms and conditions, restrictions, and coverage limits of insurance products/policies
·Insurers to provide a minimum base of mandatory coverage for risks posed by COVID-19 ·Educate travelers who are unfamiliar with the risk they could be exposed to and what coverage to look for. WTTC recently unveiled its Safe Travels protocols for hospitality, outdoor retail, airports, airlines, tour operators, convention centers, meetings and events, which were widely endorsed and supported by top CEOs and business leaders globally. Backed by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the new protocols recognize businesses and governments worldwide which have adopted them to rebuild confidence among consumers, encourage the return of 'Safe Travels' and enable the Travel & Tourism sector to reopen for business. ICONS OF ANAMALAIS – THE ASIAN ELEPHANT By Papyrus
T
he Anamalais range of hills that forms a part of the mighty Western Ghats is a treasure house of bio-diversity and home to a spectacular array of wild species. The Anamalais, literally translates as “The Elephant hills”.
The Asian Elephant, with its characteristic long nose (trunk); large, floppy ears, honey colored bead like eyes – is the most iconic animal in the rich forest landscape of the Anamalais. A proud host to India's 2nd largest Elephant population, this 952 sq. km bio-sphere is home to and the traversing ground for more than 1500 elephants. Flanked by Parambikulam to its east, Eravikulam to its west and Chinnar to its South, The Anamalais and its adjoining forests support elephants across varying habitats ranging from riverine, scrub jungles to dry / moist deciduous forests, tropical rainforests and sholas. Indeed, such a mosaic of habitat types is one of the main reasons for the high density of elephants seen in the Anamalais. The Valparai range of the Anamalais is also one of the very few places in India where one can spot Elephant herds in verdant, lush green tea gardens.

visittamilnadu As tranquil as this may seem, the vast expanse of lush green acres of tea that look so soothing and captivating to our eyes, doesn't support the diet preferences of Elephants, making it hard for them to find food and shelter. With small isolated patches of native rainforest fragments remaining, Elephants at Valparai have to walk long distances in search of food while passing through large plantations and human settlements enroute, leading to conflicts. Elephants mostly eat grasses, roots, fruit and treebark. Elephants, as mega herbivores, act as “the farmers” of our forests. Elephant dung acts as a nutrient-rich manure that replenishes depleted soil and allows birds pick through the droppings for undigested seeds. Some seeds will not germinate unless they have passed through an elephant's digestive system. Hence, their seeddispersing activity constitutes an essential element for regeneration of forests. Observing an elephant herd in their natural habitat and witnessing interactions amongst the herd members while maintaining a safe distance, is one of the most cherishing wildlife moments one can experience inside a forest. So, here are a few things to notice, the next time you see elephants in the wild.
“A group of elephants is called a herd and the social structure within the herd varies by gender, Image Shan Sarvan and population dynamics. However, the herd is usually led by a matriarch, though other individuals make decisions as and when there is a need for it. While adult males are usually solitary and wander on their own, the matriarch forms the backbone of the elephant family unit and she provides stability and guides the rest of the family. The male elephant (bulls) visit various herds in a year, the herd also meet and interact with other herds as well. ” The Gentle Giants : Elephants are extremely social creatures and when keenly observed, one can witness a lot of interesting interaction among the herd members. Elephants interact in a lot of ways.

“They 'hug' by wrapping their trunks together in displays of greeting and affection. Elephants are also very protective of their young. A newborn calf taking its baby steps or exploring its environment is always under the watchful eyes of its mother. If a baby elephant complains, the entire family will rumble and go over to touch and caress it. They have a sense of compassion that projects beyond their own kind and sometimes extends to others in distress. Elephant Emotions : With a well-developed forebrain, elephants exhibit a range of emotions like joy, anger, love, grief, compassion etc., When in distress, elephants comfort one another by placing their trunk on the other's head or mouth. Elephants also tend to help one another in adversity and miss the absence of a loved one. One of the most moving displays of elephant emotion is the grieving process. Because elephants live in closeknit herds for about as long as humans do (approximately 70 years), they form strong bonds with those around them.

Behavioral Traits : Elephants use their feet to listen, and pick up subImage Shan Sarvan sonic rumblings made by other elephants, through vibrations, by putting their trunks on the ground and carefully positioning their feet. Using a long range infra-sound, they communicate through sounds we never hear and have an incredible memory that matches or even surpasses us. When it gets too hot, elephants use their trunks like a hose to spray water, smear wet mud or dust across the body which not only helps them to cool-off but also protect their skin from parasites and biting insects.
visittamilnadu Threats: Increasing human activities inside these forests in the form of construction of residential spaces, dams, mines, farms, and plantations, huge acres of forest lands have been cleared, degraded and reduced to fragments scattered like islands. Due to the growing human population, the encroachment of elephant habitat has not only fragmented the forest landscape but has also led to the degradation of available land. Dependence on the forest for fuel, timber, livestock grazing and conversion of natural forest into monoculture plantation of tea, coffee, etc. have also severely affected the habitat of the elephants.

Conservation Status: With small isolated patches of native rainforest fragments remaining, elephants who have lost a major part of their habitat to coffee and tea at the Valparai plateau are left with no choice but to traverse through large plantations and human settlements en route and sometimes leading to negative interactions with humans.

But today, the people of Valparai are adopting measures to co-exist peacefully with the pachyderms. Thanks to the efforts of Nature Conservation Foundation, a mysore based NGO, that initiated the project “The Elephant Hills”. Over the years, the project has led to a better understanding of Human-Elephant conflicts, resulting in ingenious solutions that have minimized conflicts dramatically. With the Asian Elephant currently listed as 'Endangered' (IUCN Red List 2010), the conservation of Anamalai's and its adjoining forests hold a significant importance.

DVARA KODAIKANAL A BLISSFUL ABODE ABOVE THE CLOUDS By DivyaChandran Acharming weekend at the Dvara resort in Kodaikanal exceeded my expectations as it was filled with luxury, comfort, great food, and engaging activities. I am no stranger to Kodaikanal in the Palani Hills, as I do frequent it often to visit friends and connect with nature. An impending stay at the newly launched Dvara resort in Kodaikanal got me excited as it seemed to promise newer things to see and experience. Eager to explore the new property and its surroundings, I packed my bags and drove up the Palani-Kodaikanalghat road. With the North-east monsoon still active, the mountains were lush with greenery and the looming rain clouds looked imposing. At the end of a four-hour-long drive, we pulled into Dvara, Kodaikanal to be greeted by the manager and his team. The property was well decorated with a sense of modern charm and the staff appeared warm and attentive. Within minutes of arriving, I felt at ease and relaxed knowing that the experience was going to be exclusive. We were ushered to our room on the first floor which had a spectacular view of a valley ahead and rows and rows of mountains beyond.

visittamilnadu The Dvara, Kodaikanal is a small property with just a handful of rooms ensuring a unique boutique feel compared to the larger resorts. It has all the comforts needed to make one's stay pleasant and memorable. Cozy slip-on shoes, the right kind of adapters to charge your phone or batteries, soft and fluffy pillows and a comfortable quilt that was just right for the winter weather; these are the little things that go a long way in making a stay perfect. The rooms and common areas are filled with large canvases, collectible art, and curios, making the dĂŠcor very elegant. The well-manicured garden was another welcoming space for us to hang out and soak in the surroundings. The view ahead was the same as from our room but it was all the more breathtaking surrounded by the fresh mountain air and the birds chirping about in the garden. Every niche inside the building and in the garden was curated tastefully and we could make any space our own oasis of calm. Time flew by watching the birds in the garden and the mountain peaks play hide and seek behind the mist and monsoon clouds.

visittamilnadu The bonfire pit in the garden was much appreciated and thoroughly enjoyable in the evening when the temperature dropped. A dinner with bar-be-que by the bonfire was the highlight of our first evening at Dvara. The food at Dvara is eclectic with a welltrained chef who was happy to make anything we asked for. Anglo-Indian, Mangalorean, and local cuisines were just a few in his repertoire of culinary skills. The menu changes daily but the chef gladly accommodated our requests based on what we were in the mood for. The breakfast in the morning was elaborate with both Continental and South Indian specialties to choose from. A hot Indian breakfast of crispy podi dosas with sambhar and three varieties of chutneys was the right way to get started on a cold winter morning. Fresh cut fruits and filter coffee rounded off a scrumptious meal. The team at Dvara offered a few interesting itineraries for us to choose from to explore the mountains. Depending on our interests we could choose between a soap-making workshop, visiting a waterfall inclusive of lunch at a nearby local farm, cheese-tasting in a cheese farm or a hike to see ancient dolmens/megaliths. All these activities are worth exploring as they are hand-picked and away from the maddening tourist traps. But if the intention is to just laze and chill, then again there is no better place in Kodaikanal than Dvara to do the same. 22

visittamilnadu After a full day of engaging in activities in Pethupaarai with our guide from Dvara, we returned back weary and ready to put our feet up. The chef pampered us with appetizers like a pepper mutton fry, wild mushroom fry and green chicken bites which were delectable. The warm chappathis with mutton ball curry and railway vegetable curry were also delicious. The rum balls served at the dinner were fudge-like and we ended our gorgeous day on that sweet note. A comfortable stay in a luxurious setting with outstanding service along with food that was fingerlicking good was enough to make me feel gratified with my trip up the mountains. The exciting and fun activities that filled our days were an added bonus and will keep us coming back to Dvara, an abode above the clouds to explore the Palani hills.

The settlement Madras, now known as Fort St George which was founded by the British is barely 400 years old but the city has in its fold, neighbourhoods that are more than 1000 years old. Each area has its own history like Triplicane, Mylapore, Thiruvanmiyur and Thiruvotriyur. It was the home of Thiruvalluvar, the famous Tamil poet. St Thomas , one of the apostles of Jesus Christ had preached Christianity here and it is believed that he died here. The Portuguese, the Dutch, the French and the Britishhave all besieged its shores, Various Indian rulers have reigned over it. All this melange of cultures can be seen in the many monuments that lie scattered aroundin Chennai. Wandering around the city, you will realize that it has an ageless feel to it. Here are ten reasons why you must visit the city VISIT TAMILNADU ď‚&#x; August 2020

4. The Beach A microcosm of the city, The Marina Beach is the landmark of the city. Go for a walk, watch the fishermen at work or just see the various memorials of the beach. At one end is the estuary where the River Cooum meets the sea while at the other the Lighthouse stands stall. And while you are there, look at some of the most beautiful monuments on the beach road. But it is Elliots Beach which has taken over from Marina as the city's preferred beach. Sunrise, sunsets, moonrise – you cannot ask for a better view.
1.Temples that tell an ancient story There are several temples in the city that are more than 500 years old . Mylapore is however home to one of the oldest temples in the city‐ the 1400 year old Kapaleeshwar temple . Giving it company in antiquity is the Parthasarthy temple in Triplicane, built by the Pallavas in the 8th century and dedicated to Krishna in the form of Parthasarthy, the charioteer of Arjuna in the Mahabharatha. Every temple has its own festival, however if you want to do a temple tour, choose among the 200 temples built here.
2.Churches that are the oldest in Asia If you are interested in taking a tour of the churches, then start with the Asia's first Anglican Church , the only reminder of British Fort St George. The West Minister Abbey of the East, St Mary's Church was built here in the 17th century. In the bylanes of Parry's Corner is a lone Armenian church on Armenian Street dedicated to the merchants who added to Chennai's history. But the oldest churches go back to the Portuguese era. Referred to as KaatuKoil or the temple in the forest by the locals, the 500 year old shrine is referred to as the Church of Lady of Light or the Luz Church. There are also churches that pay homage to St Thomas who brought Christianity to Chennai. besides the Santhome Church which is built over the tomb of St Peters.

5. ECR – A road trip Wake up early morning and drive along the East Coast Road or ECR admiring he view. You can head all the way to Mahabalipuram and Pondicherry. Temptation comes in the form of resorts and coffee shops , amusement parks and cultural spaces, but then my favourite would be those little patches of blue peeping out from the groves of casuarina .
3.Walllajah trail Take a heritage walk around Marina Beach, Chepauk and Triplicane tracing the Wallajah legacy around Wallajah Road. This was once the turf of the Nawabs of Arcot. Besides the old mosques built during the period, the Chepauk palace stands here today, which was once the official residence of the Nawabs in the 18th‐19th centuries. Built in the Indo Sarcenic style, the palace has two blocks – the Khalsa Mahal and the Humayan Mahal.

6.Nature parks, birds galore Located right in the heart of the city are the GuindyNational Park and the Snake Park, a favourite for school excursions. This was once a game reserve and a part of tropical dry evergreen forest and is today considered a national park. Migratory birds throng the Pallikarnai swamps near the city. For reptile lovers, there is the Crocodile Bank near Mahabalipuram.
Idli, dosai, sambar and filter kaapi are not the only reason why people flock here. Although this is a vegetarian's paradise there are plenty of meat, chicken, sea food restaurants in the city with spicy Chettinadu food and speciality biriyani outlets leading the fray. There are several restaurants selling Italian, Greek, Mexican, Korean, Japanese and Chinese cuisine in the city besides Indian.
9. Night life For those who insist that Chennai is a conservative city, you have not seen the night life. Here there are clubs and lounge bars that are alive well past the Cindrella hour. From tapas bars to pubs, almost every hotel in the city – from five star to three star beckon you in high spirits.
7. Culture and heritage
10. Shopping
Come December and the city lives up to its tag as the cultural tag of the year. All the sabhas in the city come alive with classical music and dance as concerts and performances fill the air. However it is not just in December. The classical season is throughout the year. After all this is the home of Kalakshetra and the Music Academy. There are also theatre fests around the year, contemporary dance festivals and international film festivals galore .
No trip is complete without shopping but in Chennai, souvenir shopping is all about silk and cotton sarees. One has to just visit T Nagar to get lost in reams of silk and golden zari. Besides Kanchipuram silk sarees, also visit the local handloom outlets where sarees and textiles have been handwoven for ages. So when are you packing your bags to Chennai ?

Parry's Corner ' Wholesale hub of Textiles'' Sowcarpet Little North India '' Located in northern Chennai, Sowcarpet is filled with North Indians. The shopping potential of this area is still a well‐kept secret even from long‐time Chennai residents. The reason is that, unlike T. Nagar, Sowcarpet is not well‐connected by road or by rail. But once you shop there, you can buy lehengas, cholis, or any North Indian or Western outfit anywhere else.
Not satisfied with T. Nagar? Come to 200‐year‐old Godown Street, once the hub of the textile business in South India. This street was once open to only wholesale traders, but with the advent of retail giants, this street is missing customers. You get the same textiles that you can get in T. Nagar, but at a 30‐40% discount. Highlights : Many imported textiles are available from China, Taiwan, Thailand, and Pakisthan.
Highlights : If you are looking for jazzy dress materials with good workmanship, elegant and chic western wear, you won't come back dissatisfied. you can choose the shop by window shopping. Not many people know about this area, so you have more breathing space.
Burma Bazaar ' Imported Kingdom ''
Ritchie Street 'Chennai 's electronics hub'' From nuts and bolts to motherboards and high‐end gaming chips, everything is available in a bunch of cluttered shops along four or five streets off the busy Anna Salai. Thousands of electronics and computer shops, huddled in pigeon‐hole‐ like spaces, have made the street the electronics capital of the city.
This bazaar is along the road side of Chennai beach station. There are so many small shops selling mobiles, tvs, audio, video, dvd players, camera, pen drives, electronic items, dress materials, perfumes, leather items, etc, etc at cheap price. Most items are Chinese made except few Malaysian, Singapore, Taiwan, Korean and Indonesia made. Bargain talent is required. The guys who are selling there really might not be knowing about the fake product qualities. So they may be cheating people knowingly or unknowingly. it is better you have a local person with you or you should be in a group. If you really want to buy an item you have to bargain from half the price.
Highlights: The area has evolved into a place for assembled and branded computers, and now, smartphones, the hottest‐selling products, sold cheaper than at market rates. VISIT TAMILNADU August 2020
