He attributed the high number of positive cases over the last week to increased testing. He also said the rise in the number of deaths across the State could be attributed to co-morbidities of patients. “Today, 68 people died of COVID-19. Madurai has a rapid response team with staff from community medicine and general medicine departments who treat patients. There is a clear division of the number of patients who are symptomatic and asymptomatic. We are also providing proper supply of life-saving drugs to the public, he said. “Most people who tested positive in Madurai had influenza like illness cases and severe acute respiratory illness. ICONS OF ANAMALAIS – ASIATIC WILD DOG (DHOLE) By Arjun Srivathsa

C

arnivores world over have long captivated the fascination of people. The charismatic charm, and sometimes the fear, associated with iconic species like lions, tigers, jaguars and leopards have often rendered them deeply linked with people, cultures, folklore and religions. One such rare carnivore that roams in the varying, dense forests habitats of the Anamalais is the Asiatic wild dog or the 'dhole'. Dholes are among the few carnivore species in the world that live in social groups; they are found in packs with numbers ranging from 2 to 25 individuals. With reddish brown coats and bushy straddling tails, they have mastered the strategic hunting techniques in tropical forests, and have a fascinating social structure. Yet, they have intrigued very few natural historians, biologists and British Indian hunters. Even today, most people confuse them for foxes, jackals, or the friendly neighborhood mongrels. By physical appearance, dholes are not very large; on average they weigh about 20 kilograms and stand at around 20 inches at the shoulder. Historical records of dholes have been few and far between and natural history notes are generally ambiguous or inaccurate. In fact, there is no clear understanding of why the species is called 'dhole' in the first place. Some speculations suggest that it is a misnomer of 'thōla', the Kannada name for wolf. 14

VISIT TAMILNADU  July 2020

visittamilnadu In British India, they were seen as vermin. They were not valuable for their meat nor were they targeted as trophy species. In fact, most historic records present them in a negative light. A quote from renowned game hunter and naturalist Pythian Adams, “Except for his handsome appearance, the wild dog has not a single redeeming feature, and no effort, fair or foul, should be spared to destroy these pests of the jungle (1949), sums up the general perception of dholes through much of the 19th and 20th centuries. Even Rudyard Kipling paints a gory image of the 'red dog' in the Second Jungle Book, personifying dholes as villainous rebels that hunt by the hundreds, willfully defying the law of the jungle. Such wide spread perceptions led to the bounty-hunting of the species until they were brought under strict protection under the landmark Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. Dholes have the distinction of being among the few forest-dwelling carnivores that live in large social groups. The packs typically consist of an alpha male, alpha female, a host of subordinates, and seasonally, the pups of the alpha pair. Their inherently elusive and secretive nature makes it all the more difficult to observe or study them inside the forest habitats.

The adults of the pack partake in coordinated hunts in dense forests and manage to bring down prey such as spotted deer, sambar deer and gaurs, which much larger than the dholes themselves. While on such hunts, the pack members communicate with each other through nasal whistles (dholes are also called 'whistling dogs' for this reason). The lack of their jaw strength to deliver a killing bite on the neck or throat of the prey renders them helpless, and oftentimes forces them to consume their quarry while it is still alive. The sight of a pack of yip-yapping snarling dogs eating their prey while it is still alive only adds to their gruesome image.

visittamilnadu Just like across the most parts where they occur, dholes share space with tigers and leopards here in the Anamalais too. The interplay among the three carnivores, and, the complex mechanisms through which they coexist with each other continues to fascinate carnivore biologists. Despite being an apex predator in forests of South and southeast Asia, dholes have received very little focus in terms of scientific studies and conservation action. India perhaps has the largest dhole population in the world. Yet, there have been few long-term studies that have tried to understand their ecology. With no specific conservation action plans to protect dholes across their range, nature reserves created to conserve the tiger are aiding in their protection.

But to save India's most fascinating and important predators amidst rapid economic growth and consequent infrastructure developments, a more scientific focus on the species, extensive research on their need to persist, and most importantly, dedicated management actions targeted at Within India, remnant meta-populations of conserving them, are the need of the hour. dholes are mostly restricted to the Western Ghats, Central Indian forests, and few regions in the northeastern states. In the Anamalai Tiger Written By Arjun Srivathsa Reserve of the Western Ghats, the forests and Arjun Srivathsa is a carnivore biologist and artist, adjacent forest plantation landscapes (coffee, tea, currently a PhD student at the University of etc.) of Valparai, the farm interspersed, buffer Florida, USA, and Research Associate with Wildlife forest zones of Sethumadai and the thick, dense Conservation Society-India Program. He studies deciduous forests of the TopSlip and Chinnar large carnivores, with particular focus on dholes, range, support a large dhole population, thereby population ecology and interactions among serving as one of the most important strongholds carnivores in tropical forests of India. He is also a cartoonist, and uses art as a tool for science for the species. communication and conservation awareness.

THE EMERALD LAKE

Weekend At The Kikui Farms By NivedhaSelvaraj Are you someone who pictures your holiday in a lush green valley, sipping your hot cup of tea, soaking in every bit of tranquility that nature can offer and gazing out at the stars at night? If yes, then a camping trip to Kikui Farms, overlooking the Emerald Lake in Ooty, should be on your list! Tucked away in the lush green foliage of Avalanche, Kikui is a campsite that is larger than just a picturesque space for nature lovers to access and pitch a tent at. Carefully crafted in tandem with the interests and ideologies of its owner — Vishanth; the camp embodies a philosophy that is deeply rooted in minimalism and sustainable production. With a Masters in sustainable development in the food system and being part of the slow food movement, Vishanth is a new- age farmer who wants to establish an exciting platform for organic farming and create a hub for other farmers in the country to follow suit.

22

VISIT TAMILNADU ď‚&#x; July 2020

visittamilnadu His aim is to grow 100% organic crops where fertilizers or other products have no role to play. Kikui – a permaculture farm, now flourishes with farm fresh produce and attracts plenty of travel enthusiasts to the campsite overlooking some of the most idyllic hills of the Nilgiris. The rolling hills, abundant natural beauty, and the scenic, panoramic views of the vast Emerald lake, all make for a pleasurable stay without doubt, but the boundless energy of the wonderfully invested host, Vishanth, is what makes the campsite a humbling experience. The organic farm grew to become home not just to the workers but also many farm animals — so be sure to give them a hug when you're there. Evenings here are very special with a pint of beer and a merry bonfire along with a group of like-minded travelers, chatting and singing to their heart's content. As a part of the camp stay, you will also relish the food prepared specially by the host for you. Perks of having a chef as your host! The food provided is of fine quality and the incredible view will simply leave you in awe of this adventure. You will retire for the night in the tent under the star-lit sky and wake up to hear Nature's finest music show as the “dawn chorus” of birdsongs reach a fever pitch at daybreak. On a lucky day, you can also sight the elusive, endemic Nilgiri thrush. Later, explore the area to your heart's content, have breakfast and head back to the city for a fresh start of the week. At Kikui Farms, it is that kind of a holiday, where your soul connects with the universe. Among the nippy mountain air, you can taste the sweetness of the mist on your lips and feel the tender of breeze on your neck. When the hovering monsoon clouds are absent, you can gaze at the starlit skies and the bright, shining moon above that will leave you feeling insignificant in the larger scheme of things. But for an authentic Kikui experience, come, form your own perceptions about it! The Ideal time to visit would be from October – May. The place is shut from June – August during the monsoons.

as part of the health tourism which has immense growth opportunities in Tami Nadu After-COVID

T

he global wellness hospitality industry, worth almost $4.5 trillion, is evolving to dovetail the concept of healing with everyday living. India, the citadel of traditional wisdom, is following suit. The COVID-19 crisis has ensured that we are well-versed with the need to focus on wellness. Not just a medical sort of wellness, but a holistic one, focusing on nutrition, rest, rejuvenation, and centred on everyday wellness. Wellness, then, is a crucial segment that offers hoteliers immense opportunities to grow in the After-COVID world. The GWI (GlobalWellness Institute) projects that wellness tourism will grow at an average annual rate of 7.5% through 2022, considerably faster than the 6.4% annual growth forecasted for overall global tourism. Once the world opens, it is likely to be obsessively focused on wellness and safety. In some sense, wellness will move from the realm of an additional hospitality service that helps hotels earn revenues, to the center-stage. Prominent exponents of the ancient treatment system of Tamil Nadu, Siddha system, are of the view that a renewed effort from the government, with participation from the state tourism development corporation, will largely help in popularizing the centuries old alternative therapy in the national and international spectrum and to get recognition for its incontestable efficacy. The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) is reluctant to focus on the state's own system, Siddha, into the health packages being provided to the holidayers and international tourists, they allege. If traditional curing of ailments through Siddha becomes a component of the tourist packages, it will make the state into a destination for medical tourism or health tourism. 30

VISIT TAMILNADU ď‚&#x; July 2020

visittamilnadu Through tourism health packages, the system of Siddha can be popularized nationally and internationally as well as the state can increase its revenue from the tourism sector. In order to achieve this goal, the tourism development corporation must set up more wellness centres in major tourist places and provide all the healing properties of the Ayush systems such as Panchakarma treatment of Ayurveda and Varma therapies of Siddha as health packages to the tourists. This will undoubtedly help the growth of the tourism market in Tamil Nadu, observe the exponents. Tamil Nadu has emerged as a tourist destination of temple towns, heritage sites & architecture, hill stations and waterfalls, but it is not witnessing a long stay back period of tourists at present. If a rejuvenation therapy through Siddha is promised, the state will get lot of tourists from other countries and also from north India to practice yoga and do Varma therapy which includes massage. Considering the growing fascination for massages, TTDC can establish as many numbers of wellness centres and spas in major destinations in order to woo more tourists. Commenting on the idea of health tourism, Dr Arul Amuthan, Siddha professor at the Manipal Institute of Higher Education in Udupi, said the government can give good medical packages to the tourists combined with the Varma therapy component of the Siddha system to the patients of other countries. Likewise, the tourism development corporation should convert their tourism packages into health tourism or medical tourism packages by providing rejuvenation therapy through Siddha system. This will impact in two ways to the state, on one side it will help for earning revenue to the state and on the other side, it will foster the ancient healing system of Tamil Nadu to grow into national and international levels. According to Dr. Amuthan, the TTDC can give two types of packages, tourist packages and medical packages combined with leisure activities, fun and fitness. Varma therapy of Siddha system is used to treat patients suffering from paralysis, nervous disorder, spondylititis and other conditions. TTDC can market Siddha as part of the health tourism which has immense scope in Tami Nadu. VISIT TAMILNADU ď‚&#x; July 2020

T

he Eco Park is located near Five Falls (Aintharuvi) in Courtallam in Thirunelveli District of Tamilnadu. It is also known as 'Aruvi Poonga'. This Eco Park has been set up over an extent of 37.23 acres at a cost of Rs.5.73 crore. It is touted to be the State's biggest eco-park. This park is located adjacent to the famous 'Five Falls'. The farm belonging to the Tamil Nadu Horticulture Development Agency (TANHODA) has been converted to accommodate the park. Some of the attractive features of the park are adventure-play area, sunken garden, fern garden, royal drive, bamboo avenue, rock garden, children play area, murals, butterfly garden, eco pond and stream walk. The Eco Park, known as 'Aruvi Poonga', has been established with the prime objective of creating awareness on the public on conserving the highly rich biodiversity of the Western Ghats and its highly delicate ecosystem. Specialty of this new facility is that the existing landscape of the Horticulture Farm and its environment has been completely retained while new attractions have been created to lure the visitors. While the eastern boundary of this park is the stream rustling down from the height to reach Five Falls, the elevated western boundary has a range of gardens to add more colour to the Western Ghats. The statues, concrete murals, broad tiled differently-abled-friendly walker's path, sprawling open food court on the northern boundary of the garden and above all, the cool and unpolluted air of the Eco Park will certainly attract huge crowd throughout the year. The entire area of the park, which has been illuminated with colourful lights, has been meticulously used by creating different gardens for sculpture, fern, butterfly, rose, bamboo, rock, lotus and lily, herbal plants, aromatic plants, fountains and children's play area. The highest point of the park has a 'View Tower' from which one can see the entire stretch between Tenkasi and famous Thirumalai Murugan Temple. At no place of this park, electricity is being used to take water to nourish the plants as the land's gradient has been used to effectively distribute water to all parts of 'Aruvi Poonga' through drip irrigation. It also has a food court constructed for the purpose of refreshment of the visitors. Apart from acting as a recreational centre, this park is also a great learning centre for students. Also, the farms of this park have educational and commercial significance. They act as demonstration centers and guide for such purposes. Eco Park is situated 5 Kms away from the bus stand in the western side of the hills.

best 10 reasons to visit Chennai by Lakshmi Sharath | Photos by: Vincent Albert

I

t has been listed as one of the must see cities in the world by international magazines and newspapers citing its ancient heritage, its traditional culture, its historic monuments and vast coastline. But Chennai has always beckoned the world to its shores since ancient times. The settlement Madras, now known as Fort St George which was founded by the British is barely 400 years old but the city has in its fold, neighbourhoods that are more than 1000 years old. Each area has its own history like Triplicane, Mylapore, Thiruvanmiyur and Thiruvotriyur. It was the home of Thiruvalluvar, the famous Tamil poet. St Thomas , one of the apostles of Jesus Christ had preached Christianity here and it is believed that he died here. The Portuguese, the Dutch, the French and the Britishhave all besieged its shores, Various Indian rulers have reigned over it. All this melange of cultures can be seen in the many monuments that lie scattered aroundin Chennai. Wandering around the city, you will realize that it has an ageless feel to it. Here are ten reasons why you must visit the city

4. The Beach A microcosm of the city, The Marina Beach is the landmark of the city. Go for a walk, watch the fishermen at work or just see the various memorials of the beach. At one end is the estuary where the River Cooum meets the sea while at the other the Lighthouse stands stall. And while you are there, look at some of the most beautiful monuments on the beach road. But it is Elliots Beach which has taken over from Marina as the city's preferred beach. Sunrise, sunsets, moonrise – you cannot ask for a better view.

1.Temples that tell an ancient story There are several temples in the city that are more than 500 years old . Mylapore is however home to one of the oldest temples in the city‐ the 1400 year old Kapaleeshwar temple . Giving it company in antiquity is the Parthasarthy temple in Triplicane, built by the Pallavas in the 8th century and dedicated to Krishna in the form of Parthasarthy, the charioteer of Arjuna in the Mahabharatha. Every temple has its own festival, however if you want to do a temple tour, choose among the 200 temples built here.

2.Churches that are the oldest in Asia If you are interested in taking a tour of the churches, then start with the Asia's first Anglican Church , the only reminder of British Fort St George. The West Minister Abbey of the East, St Mary's Church was built here in the 17th century. In the bylanes of Parry's Corner is a lone Armenian church on Armenian Street dedicated to the merchants who added to Chennai's history. But the oldest churches go back to the Portuguese era. Referred to as KaatuKoil or the temple in the forest by the locals, the 500 year old shrine is referred to as the Church of Lady of Light or the Luz Church. There are also churches that pay homage to St Thomas who brought Christianity to Chennai. besides the Santhome Church which is built over the tomb of St Peters.

5. ECR – A road trip Wake up early morning and drive along the East Coast Road or ECR admiring he view. You can head all the way to Mahabalipuram and Pondicherry. Temptation comes in the form of resorts and coffee shops , amusement parks and cultural spaces, but then my favourite would be those little patches of blue peeping out from the groves of casuarina .

3.Walllajah trail Take a heritage walk around Marina Beach, Chepauk and Triplicane tracing the Wallajah legacy around Wallajah Road. This was once the turf of the Nawabs of Arcot. Besides the old mosques built during the period, the Chepauk palace stands here today, which was once the official residence of the Nawabs in the 18th‐19th centuries. Built in the Indo Sarcenic style, the palace has two blocks – the Khalsa Mahal and the Humayan Mahal.

8. Food

6.Nature parks, birds galore Located right in the heart of the city are the GuindyNational Park and the Snake Park, a favourite for school excursions. This was once a game reserve and a part of tropical dry evergreen forest and is today considered a national park. Migratory birds throng the Pallikarnai swamps near the city. For reptile lovers, there is the Crocodile Bank near Mahabalipuram.

Idli, dosai, sambar and filter kaapi are not the only reason why people flock here. Although this is a vegetarian's paradise there are plenty of meat, chicken, sea food restaurants in the city with spicy Chettinadu food and speciality biriyani outlets leading the fray. There are several restaurants selling Italian, Greek, Mexican, Korean, Japanese and Chinese cuisine in the city besides Indian.

9. Night life For those who insist that Chennai is a conservative city, you have not seen the night life. Here there are clubs and lounge bars that are alive well past the Cindrella hour. From tapas bars to pubs, almost every hotel in the city – from five star to three star beckon you in high spirits.

7. Culture and heritage

10. Shopping

Come December and the city lives up to its tag as the cultural tag of the year. All the sabhas in the city come alive with classical music and dance as concerts and performances fill the air. However it is not just in December. The classical season is throughout the year. After all this is the home of Kalakshetra and the Music Academy. There are also theatre fests around the year, contemporary dance festivals and international film festivals galore .

No trip is complete without shopping but in Chennai, souvenir shopping is all about silk and cotton sarees. One has to just visit T Nagar to get lost in reams of silk and golden zari. Besides Kanchipuram silk sarees, also visit the local handloom outlets where sarees and textiles have been handwoven for ages. So when are you packing your bags to Chennai ?

Parry's Corner ' Wholesale hub of Textiles'' Sowcarpet Little North India '' Located in northern Chennai, Sowcarpet is filled with North Indians. The shopping potential of this area is still a well‐kept secret even from long‐time Chennai residents. The reason is that, unlike T. Nagar, Sowcarpet is not well‐connected by road or by rail. But once you shop there, you can buy lehengas, cholis, or any North Indian or Western outfit anywhere else.

Not satisfied with T. Nagar? Come to 200‐year‐old Godown Street, once the hub of the textile business in South India. This street was once open to only wholesale traders, but with the advent of retail giants, this street is missing customers. You get the same textiles that you can get in T. Nagar, but at a 30‐40% discount. Highlights : Many imported textiles are available from China, Taiwan, Thailand, and Pakisthan.

Highlights : If you are looking for jazzy dress materials with good workmanship, elegant and chic western wear, you won't come back dissatisfied. you can choose the shop by window shopping. Not many people know about this area, so you have more breathing space.

Burma Bazaar ' Imported Kingdom ''

Ritchie Street 'Chennai 's electronics hub'' From nuts and bolts to motherboards and high‐end gaming chips, everything is available in a bunch of cluttered shops along four or five streets off the busy Anna Salai. Thousands of electronics and computer shops, huddled in pigeon‐hole‐ like spaces, have made the street the electronics capital of the city.

This bazaar is along the road side of Chennai beach station. There are so many small shops selling mobiles, tvs, audio, video, dvd players, camera, pen drives, electronic items, dress materials, perfumes, leather items, etc, etc at cheap price. Most items are Chinese made except few Malaysian, Singapore, Taiwan, Korean and Indonesia made. Bargain talent is required. The guys who are selling there really might not be knowing about the fake product qualities. So they may be cheating people knowingly or unknowingly. it is better you have a local person with you or you should be in a group. If you really want to buy an item you have to bargain from half the price.

Highlights: The area has evolved into a place for assembled and branded computers, and now, smartphones, the hottest‐selling products, sold cheaper than at market rates. VISIT TAMILNADU  July 2020
