news Don't be afraid of Tamil Nadu's Covid-19 numbers, says, Dr. C. Vijayabaskar The coronavirus spokesmen in the country are making no secret of the fact that they are spooked by the numbers now. In New Delhi, Lav Agarwal said the people have to learn to live with the virus. In Karnataka, minister Suresh Kumar said “the numbers are not good” before revealing that 48 fresh cases had turned up in the state on Friday. Here in Chennai, the prefatory statement by Tamil Nadu health minister Dr C Vijayabaskar was: "Don't be frightened by the Covid-19 numbers.” And here they are: 600 new Covid-19 positive cases in the past 24 hours, nearly 400 of them from Chennai alone. In the past three days, each new day has brought in 771, 590 and 600 cases, and the total has doubled in five days from 3029 on May 3 to 6009 on May 8. Tamilnadu is now up to fourth on the coronavirus table in the country, and is clearly revving to move up higher. Vijayabhaskar was clear what is needed to be done: “It will be sufficient if the public cooperates with the government," he said during his briefing to reporters on the overall situation in Tamil Nadu. DrVijayabhaskar said Dr. Harsh Vardhan appreciated Tamil Nadu's efforts in battling the coronavirus in terms of better treatment, isolation, containment and coordination. Particularly, the state has the lowest mortality rate of 0.68 per cent in the country.

visittamilnadu The remarkable thing about Tamil Nadu's corona surge is that almost 80 per cent of the cases are asymptomatic. This, the fiat to tell the mild cases to stay at home and take care of themselves, is part of the updated guidelines issued by the government of India. This, the fiat to tell the mild cases to stay at home and take care of themselves, is part of the updated guidelines issued by the government of India. In Tamil Nadu, such home quarantine patients will be given a 'kit' containing dos and don'ts. This DIY coronavirus kit will have the nostrum KabasuraKudineer to improve immunity, Zinc Plus, vitamin C, vitamin D tablets, herbal powder, soap, face masks and hand sanitizer. Tamil Nadu's sudden spurt in the past three days is an outcome of more vigorous testing, especially in hot spots like the Koyambedu market in Chennai, which has contributed 1,589 cases, or roughly 26.50 per cent, to the total corona cases of 6,009 in Tamil Nadu. This is because of the intense, 'tracking, tracing and testing' of people associated with the 'primary persons' who tested positive in Koyembedu. Vijayabhaskar said: "We are testing more people per day than even Maharashtra."

ICONS OF ANAMALAIS – THE GREAT PIED HORNBILL By Poornima Kannan
L
ocated in the Anamalai Range of the Western Ghats, Valparai is one of the most pristine spots in Tamil Nadu. The huge trees that reach out to the sky with creepers clambering over them accompanied by the ferns and wild flowers form a wall of greenery on the mountains. As the rain mellowed down to a drizzle, I stepped out to experience rain. The occasional chirping of the birds and butterflies nectaring on tiny wildflowers strewn amongst the moist forest floor made the walk a pleasant one. Suddenly I heard a loud cackling sound and my attention gripped on to a pair of Hornbillson a fig tree. The male hornbill and the female hornbill were conversing with each other probably discussing which direction to fly or where to have lunch. After a short discussion both flew away in the same direction. Hornbills are one of Asia's most attractive birds. Large, colorful and easier to spot than most other birds, hornbills have become one of the most iconic birds in the tropical forests of Asia. Hornbills primarily feed on fruit, figs and insects. They collect fruit in their neck pouch and have the ability to clasp fruit, insects and other food with the tip of their bill and deftly toss it in the air and catch it like a person catching a piece of popcorn with their mouth.

visittamilnadu These birds are really huge and when they flap their wings to fly they make a characteristic sound. The loud whooshing noise emanating from hornbills as they fly is produced by the air being compressed in the gaps of the hornbill's wing feathers. Large hornbills lack feathers that allow for smooth air flow. The wing beats of hornbills can be heard from half a mile away. As the clouds and the mist constantly compete with each other to change the mood of the landscape, amongst the fern laden trees, I found another hornbill trying to put its beak inside a hole on a tree. I was lucky as this was its nest and the male hornbill was trying to feed the female. Hornbills nest in naturally formed tree cavities. The female hornbill is sealed inside the nest that is shut except for a narrow, vertical slit about half an inch wide. The slit is wide enough to pass food through but narrow enough to seal out potential predators such as Martens and other animals that feed on eggs and young birds. Their long curved bills that are mostly yellow can reach lengths of 13 inches. The bill is an integral part of the hornbill's skull and is used by the bird to feed, fight, preen, make nests and potentially serve as an important means of protection.

In this picture – Harishvara Venkat has edited an image to bring the male and the female bird to Image Shan Sarvan one image with the intention of showing the basic difference in the sexes. Left: Female, Right: Male. Females are smaller than males and have bluish-white instead of red eyes although the orbital skin is pinkish. The most prominent feature of the hornbill is the bright yellow and black casque on top of the massive bill. The back of the casque is reddish in females while the underside of the front and back of the casque is black in males. The males have black marking on white tail and the females have white on black. Hornbills are generally monogamous. Many mate for life. As I watch the hornbill, it makes several trips to its nest with food. Males bring up to 13 meals of fruit a day to nesting females. One male was observed delivering 150 figs in one visit, regurgitated one after another. The females reportedly like some variety to their diet and have refused food if they are brought too much of the same thing. The Great Indian hornbill feed on fruit, primarily figs, plucked from among the foliage. Figs are important to rain forests as they are available when there is little else to eat. This is because fig trees – even those belonging to the same species – follow individual schedules and rarely fruit at the same time. Unlike mangoes and other tropical fruits, a diverse community of fig trees provides food year-round. VISIT TAMILNADU June 2020

Threats : The biggest threats to these farmers of the rainforests are shrinking habitats and pressure from poaching. Habitat destruction and removal of large trees limit the food and nesting space availability. They are targeted for their meat, beautiful feathers and casque by several tribal folks as a symbol of hunting prowess.

restaurant Hotel and restaurant industries urge
Government for resuming operations in green and orange zones As India gears up to enter the 4.0 phase of lockdown, many industries including the hospitality sector are expecting Government's nod to resume services (partially) in a bid to tide over economic crisis posed by coronavirus. Recently, the representatives of hotel and restaurant industry urged the government for giving relaxation for the sector during 'lockdown 4.0', at least in green and orange zones to mitigate crisis. The Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI), has put forth a proposal urging that hotels and restaurants in green zones should be allowed to operate at 100 per cent and in orange zones at 50 per cent capacities. "Even today, containing the spread of the virus remains the country's priority. But we also have to take into account that the hospitality and tourism industry employs over 4.3 crore people. They are relying for their survival. Every lockdown extension is making it difficult for us to keep people employed and to sustain. Since the government is relaxing operations for several industries to keep the wheels of economy moving, we are hoping that it allows our industry some relaxation too," FHRAI Vice-President Gurbaxish Singh Kohli said. It is owing to prolonged lockdown measure, the industry is staring at a potential job loss of around 3.8 crore, which is 70 percent of the total workforce."According to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), as many as 7.5 crore travel and tourism jobs are at risk worldwide, one in eight of them are in India. We hope to resume operations and adhere to all the safety measures and follow the compliance strictly. We stand united with the government for eradicating the virus and together we will show the way to the world in achieving this, Kohli added.

tour Ooty's famous Botanical Garden is all a bloom without tourists in the lockdown Shiva SubramaniamSamraj, The Joint Director, Horticulture, Nilgiris, says the Botanical Garden has never looked more beautiful. Last year, this time, the Ooty roads were chock-a-block with tourist vehicles and long lines snaked up to the gates of the garden waiting to enter. This year, Ooty wears a forlorn look. “I shared the photographs of the garden on Facebook and 10,000 people have liked it,” says Shiva. “This is the best time for us to show off the garden and showcase the hard work that has gone into it. But the lockdown has tied our hands and there is no one to see the extraordinary work we have done,” he laments. “I have been associated with the garden for 30 years, with a brief outing to Coimbatore and Chennai in between. This is the first time in history, that the Government Botanical Garden has been closed officially. Similarly, this is the first time that there may not be a flower show! There are nearly 25,000 potted plants and my team is emotionally hit that there is no one to witness the extravaganza.” They had no way of knowing about the onslaught of COVID-19, so preparations as usual had started by November. “The flowerbeds were prepared and seeds sown from November to January. New flowerpots were acquired, many seeds were imported and no efforts were spared at nurturing them. This year, we were hoping to show off our Begonia-Bada Boom series, Calendula – Gitana Fiesta, Touch of Red, Celosia-Century series, Calla Lily, etc,” says Shiva.

And even during the lockdown, with requisite permission and minimum staff, they are all being tended to,” says Shiva. He says that would not have been possible without the encouragement and permission of the Collector of the Nilgiris, J Innocent Divya. It has been a collective effort to carry on in these times of adversity.” The garden is so beautiful that people have forgotten their stress and worries in them, says Shiva. “I have encountered so many people who have become so engrossed in its wonder, that they have not noticed that their children have wandered off,” he laughs and hopes the world has slowed down enough to give people time to take stock of their lives and the importance of Nature in it. “We feel happy that the garden affords so much pleasure to thousands of visitors who come here. We hope that they will also be respectful of the plants and the upkeep of the garden. We hope they will not vandalize plants, pluck and destroy them, not mess up the washrooms and stop spitting and littering the surroundings.” The team of the Botanical Garden is impatiently waiting for visitors to start trooping in. There are many new plants and plans afoot, says Shiva. “We will be introducing new varieties of flowers, shrubs and trees. There are plans to set up an exclusive section for orchids. Tourists, when they return, will be in for a treat,” he promises.

t has been listed as one of the must see cities in the world by international magazines and newspapers citing its ancient heritage, its traditional culture, its historic monuments and vast coastline. But Chennai has always beckoned the world to its shores since ancient times. The settlement Madras, now known as Fort St George which was founded by the British is barely 400 years old but the city has in its fold, neighbourhoods that are more than 1000 years old. Each area has its own history like Triplicane, Mylapore, Thiruvanmiyur and Thiruvotriyur. It was the home of Thiruvalluvar, the famous Tamil poet. St Thomas , one of the apostles of Jesus Christ had preached Christianity here and it is believed that he died here. The Portuguese, the Dutch, the French and the Britishhave all besieged its shores, Various Indian rulers have reigned over it. All this melange of cultures can be seen in the many monuments that lie scattered aroundin Chennai. Wandering around the city, you will realize that it has an ageless feel to it. Here are ten reasons why you must visit the city VISIT TAMILNADU ď‚&#x; June 2020

4. The Beach A microcosm of the city, The Marina Beach is the landmark of the city. Go for a walk, watch the fishermen at work or just see the various memorials of the beach. At one end is the estuary where the River Cooum meets the sea while at the other the Lighthouse stands stall. And while you are there, look at some of the most beautiful monuments on the beach road. But it is Elliots Beach which has taken over from Marina as the city's preferred beach. Sunrise, sunsets, moonrise – you cannot ask for a better view.
1.Temples that tell an ancient story There are several temples in the city that are more than 500 years old . Mylapore is however home to one of the oldest temples in the city‐ the 1400 year old Kapaleeshwar temple . Giving it company in antiquity is the Parthasarthy temple in Triplicane, built by the Pallavas in the 8th century and dedicated to Krishna in the form of Parthasarthy, the charioteer of Arjuna in the Mahabharatha. Every temple has its own festival, however if you want to do a temple tour, choose among the 200 temples built here.
2.Churches that are the oldest in Asia If you are interested in taking a tour of the churches, then start with the Asia's first Anglican Church , the only reminder of British Fort St George. The West Minister Abbey of the East, St Mary's Church was built here in the 17th century. In the bylanes of Parry's Corner is a lone Armenian church on Armenian Street dedicated to the merchants who added to Chennai's history. But the oldest churches go back to the Portuguese era. Referred to as KaatuKoil or the temple in the forest by the locals, the 500 year old shrine is referred to as the Church of Lady of Light or the Luz Church. There are also churches that pay homage to St Thomas who brought Christianity to Chennai. besides the Santhome Church which is built over the tomb of St Peters.

5. ECR – A road trip Wake up early morning and drive along the East Coast Road or ECR admiring he view. You can head all the way to Mahabalipuram and Pondicherry. Temptation comes in the form of resorts and coffee shops , amusement parks and cultural spaces, but then my favourite would be those little patches of blue peeping out from the groves of casuarina .
3.Walllajah trail Take a heritage walk around Marina Beach, Chepauk and Triplicane tracing the Wallajah legacy around Wallajah Road. This was once the turf of the Nawabs of Arcot. Besides the old mosques built during the period, the Chepauk palace stands here today, which was once the official residence of the Nawabs in the 18th‐19th centuries. Built in the Indo Sarcenic style, the palace has two blocks – the Khalsa Mahal and the Humayan Mahal.

8. Food
6.Nature parks, birds galore Located right in the heart of the city are the GuindyNational Park and the Snake Park, a favourite for school excursions. This was once a game reserve and a part of tropical dry evergreen forest and is today considered a national park. Migratory birds throng the Pallikarnai swamps near the city. For reptile lovers, there is the Crocodile Bank near Mahabalipuram.
Idli, dosai, sambar and filter kaapi are not the only reason why people flock here. Although this is a vegetarian's paradise there are plenty of meat, chicken, sea food restaurants in the city with spicy Chettinadu food and speciality biriyani outlets leading the fray. There are several restaurants selling Italian, Greek, Mexican, Korean, Japanese and Chinese cuisine in the city besides Indian.
9. Night life For those who insist that Chennai is a conservative city, you have not seen the night life. Here there are clubs and lounge bars that are alive well past the Cindrella hour. From tapas bars to pubs, almost every hotel in the city – from five star to three star beckon you in high spirits.
7. Culture and heritage
10. Shopping
Come December and the city lives up to its tag as the cultural tag of the year. All the sabhas in the city come alive with classical music and dance as concerts and performances fill the air. However it is not just in December. The classical season is throughout the year. After all this is the home of Kalakshetra and the Music Academy. There are also theatre fests around the year, contemporary dance festivals and international film festivals galore .
No trip is complete without shopping but in Chennai, souvenir shopping is all about silk and cotton sarees. One has to just visit T Nagar to get lost in reams of silk and golden zari. Besides Kanchipuram silk sarees, also visit the local handloom outlets where sarees and textiles have been handwoven for ages. So when are you packing your bags to Chennai ?

Parry's Corner ' Wholesale hub of Textiles'' Sowcarpet Little North India '' Located in northern Chennai, Sowcarpet is filled with North Indians. The shopping potential of this area is still a well‐kept secret even from long‐time Chennai residents. The reason is that, unlike T. Nagar, Sowcarpet is not well‐connected by road or by rail. But once you shop there, you can buy lehengas, cholis, or any North Indian or Western outfit anywhere else.
Not satisfied with T. Nagar? Come to 200‐year‐old Godown Street, once the hub of the textile business in South India. This street was once open to only wholesale traders, but with the advent of retail giants, this street is missing customers. You get the same textiles that you can get in T. Nagar, but at a 30‐40% discount. Highlights : Many imported textiles are available from China, Taiwan, Thailand, and Pakisthan.
Highlights : If you are looking for jazzy dress materials with good workmanship, elegant and chic western wear, you won't come back dissatisfied. you can choose the shop by window shopping. Not many people know about this area, so you have more breathing space.
Burma Bazaar ' Imported Kingdom ''
Ritchie Street 'Chennai 's electronics hub'' From nuts and bolts to motherboards and high‐end gaming chips, everything is available in a bunch of cluttered shops along four or five streets off the busy Anna Salai. Thousands of electronics and computer shops, huddled in pigeon‐hole‐ like spaces, have made the street the electronics capital of the city.
This bazaar is along the road side of Chennai beach station. There are so many small shops selling mobiles, tvs, audio, video, dvd players, camera, pen drives, electronic items, dress materials, perfumes, leather items, etc, etc at cheap price. Most items are Chinese made except few Malaysian, Singapore, Taiwan, Korean and Indonesia made. Bargain talent is required. The guys who are selling there really might not be knowing about the fake product qualities. So they may be cheating people knowingly or unknowingly. it is better you have a local person with you or you should be in a group. If you really want to buy an item you have to bargain from half the price.
Highlights: The area has evolved into a place for assembled and branded computers, and now, smartphones, the hottest‐selling products, sold cheaper than at market rates. VISIT TAMILNADU June 2020
