The release of the spring edition of the Truro Guide is one of the highlights of our calendar. The worst of the winter weather is behind us and we can look forward to longer days and warmer weather. In the city, spring is everywhere. The award-winning gardens are beginning to bloom; restaurants, bars and cafĂŠs are introducing their springtime menus and shops have shed their wintry displays. Blooming Marvellous
T
hey say spring comes early in Cornwall, which is especially good news for anyone visiting Truro. Carefully nurtured and tended to all year long, the city’s award-winning parks and gardens burst into life with floral displays to brighten any day, from the picture-perfect formal beds and bandstand of Victoria Gardens, to the incidental blurs of colour in plantings at roadsides and roundabouts. All the devotion and labour from council staff and community groups is bringing its reward. Having won gold in the Large Town category of the annual national RHS Britain in Bloom awards last year, Truro is taking a step up in 2018. The city has been invited to take its place as one of just six destinations in the Champion of Champions

category – the Premier League of civic horticulture. The Parks Department at Truro City Council will be working closely with volunteer group Truro in Bloom on the city’s entry, along with Truro Business Improvement District (BID) and other community and Friends groups. The elevated status calls for an extra focus on improving the look of street furniture, such as seats and bollards, and new signs highlighting the city’s main historic features. This spring, Truro City Council will also be refurbishing the eight tennis courts at Boscawen Park, providing a hard-wearing, all-weather playing surface, with further plans to create a new pavilion and cafe. What does your typical day look like? No day at Truro City Council is typical! I start in our yard at Boscawen Park in the morning, speaking to all the staff and working out the day’s tasks. Then it’s looking at ordering or dealing with specific works. I’m very much involved in the design and ordering of the bedding displays throughout Truro, getting very little time to actually work in the gardens these days. What’s your favourite part of the job? My job is very rewarding. I love to see people sitting in Boscawen Park enjoying the flower displays during the summer months. I also enjoy designing and planting the perennial displays. The mixed borders we plant at Boscawen Park always give me satisfaction and they’ll be there for many years to come.
Favourite outdoor space in Truro? I think Kenwyn Churchyard would be my favourite open space. This area has many happy memories from my childhood. Right next door was Truro Cathedral School, where my father was Head Gardener. I would go to work with him during the school holidays and was amazed how I could get plants to grow from seeds and cuttings. Along with an abundance of wildlife, the churchyard has some fantastic views of both the countryside and the city.

his spring marks the Royal Cornwall Museum’s 200th anniversary. Founded on a passion of learning and culture, the museum has stood as a testament to Cornish ingenuity ever since. To date, more than half a million objects have been collected and exhibited there – showcasing the outstanding contribution Cornwall has made over the centuries to science and the arts. From February 2018 the museum will be re-opening its doors to the public following an interiors refresh, made possible by a grant from the Department for

Cornish Astronomy Heritage/Dark Skies Project 13 APRIL The refurbishment includes the addition of a giant Ordinance Survey floor map of Cornwall from 200 years ago and digitally created underground mining maps. The World Wide Wonders exhibition is a fascinating collection of weird and wonderful objects including the bones of a giant Moa, African fertility masks, and much more! RIC200 will see curation at the Royal Cornwall Museum turned on its head, shining a spotlight on local talent and empowering the community to share what Cornwall means to them as part of its Hireth: Changing the Cornish Landscape exhibition.

ST PIRAN’S DAY
St. Piran’s Day on the 5th March is a key date on Cornwall’s cultural calendar. Hundreds gather and celebrate our famous Cornish saint.
O
riginally observed by the mining community, St. Piran’s Day was re-established in the late 19th century and is now widely acknowledged as a day to celebrate Cornwall’s history, heritage and culture.
According to legend, Irish born St. Piran was able to perform miracles, leading to him being thrown into the sea with a millstone round his neck at the command of jealous tribal kings. Instead of sinking to his demise, he floated to safety, landing on the sandy shores of Perranporth where he established a church. Events and parades take place across the county, with Truro hosting the longest running parade of its kind. Expect to see participants dressed in traditional Cornish tartan, and faces painted with the black-and-white Cornish flag. The parade begins at 1pm from St George’s Road and will pass through the streets to High
Cross. Once at the Cathedral Steps the Dean of Truro and Bishop Chris will lead a discussion on the life and values of Piran before a rendition of Cornwall’s “Trelawny” anthem.

n 2016, work began to restore the abandoned bakery, and has since become a raw, coolly renovated space that now functions as a welcoming, independent fringe venue. With performers and audiences recognising it as a space that could fill the gap in Truro’s nightlife, it is steadily growing in popularity thanks to its diverse, varied events calendar. The Old Bakery hosts The Comedy Cupboard, cabarets, theatre nights, live music, and silent discos. 2018 sees more exciting events added, including

CENTURIES OF
COINAGE HALL This majestic building in the heart of Boscawen Street is a pivotal landmark in Truro’s history with many rich stories to tell.
I
n 1351, the Duke of Cornwall’s steward was ordered to find, buy or build a house in Truro “pour le coignage et la garde d’estyn” or, “for coinage and the guarding of tin”. This command meant Truro would become a Stannary Town, where tin would be taxed and tested for its quality by having a corner – or “coign” in French – removed and weighed. Because of this, a building close to this site became Coinage Hall. Tin mining was so important that miners were granted their own law and parliament, with courts every three weeks and parliaments, convened by the Duke by request of the Stannators when necessary, sometimes in Truro. The Lord Warden of the Stannaries, who would have been highly regarded throughout all Stannary towns, presided at the parliament – at one point this position was even held by Sir Walter Raleigh. Coinage Hall sustained its importance for many centuries after this, and in the 18th Century it even played host to royalty! Prince William (eventually to be crowned King William IV) was entertained by Lord Falmouth after mooring his ship off Tregothnan. Lord
Falmouth took William to the Coinage Hall, which was also a venue for occasional concerts and performances when not in use for its intended purpose. By 1790, Truro was growing rapidly, thanks, in part, to the passing trade of miners visiting Coinage Hall. Cornwall was producing the most tin and copper in Europe, bringing so much prosperity that Truro was described as “the handsomest town in Cornwall” by a passing traveller. However, in 1838, the Duchy ceased taking the coinage, making Coinage Hall redundant – a decade later it was demolished. Shortly afterwards, a new, Victorian, building was constructed on exactly the same spot, which housed a bank – and this is the building that you see today. It still has a water pump just outside, which was a feature of the old hall, and remains a feature of Boscawen Street. Today, Coinage Hall is home to Charlotte’s Tea Room, which is a far cry from its original purpose, but the building’s regal interiors are an echo of past importance. Call in and allow yourself to be transported back through the decades of prosperity in our great little city.

CATHEDRAL HIGHLIGHTS Whether you’re soaking up the history, enjoying a choral performance or simply finding a haven of calm in the middle of the city, Truro’s most iconic building will welcome you with open arms.

Tickets for this are £12 (under 18’s go free) and can be bought from the Hall for Cornwall, while the organ recitals are free with a retiring collection taken. Additional choral events include Truro Choral Society and Truro Symphony Orchestra performing Mozart’s Requiem (10 March), the St. Mary’s Singers and orchestra performing the St John Passion by Bach (25 March), and The Sixteen’s Choral Pilgrimage, featuring music by Cornysh and Britten (18 May).
The Cathedral rewards its visitors with amazing views of intricate Gothic architecture and a peaceful, warm atmosphere at all times of year, but with Spring approaching you can expect a range of Easter events, special services and choral performances. MUSICAL MAGIC Friday May 9th sees the organ recital series return for 2018. It begins with Joseph Wicks, the Assistant Director of Music at the Cathedral with different players throughout the weeks. Musical delights continue with a concert
SEASONAL SERVICES Combine delicious food with stunning opera on the 3 March, and be serenaded in the Cathedral Restaurant by fabulous singers performing some of the great opera arias. For more details on this, please contact the Cathedral office. Of course, March also brings St. Piran’s day – the day of Cornwall’s patron saint. The Cathedral will hold two services to mark St. Piran’s day, an Evensong on Sunday 4 March, and a Eucharist on Monday 5 March to pay homage to the Cornish saint. Easter and the Holy Week welcome plenty of activity in the Cathedral. Be sure not to miss the Palm Sunday Service and procession around the Cathedral
led by the donkey to remember Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem (25 March). This will be followed up with the Good Friday Service and Evensong sung by Truro Cathedral Choir and its boy choristers, and with plenty of events throughout the Holy Week – keep an eye on the Cathedral website for updates. On Easter Sunday, April 1st, The Easter Festival Service takes place at 10am. With plenty of drama, music and symbol at this service, it is a spectacle to behold as you contemplate what Easter really means.
