TRURO’S

COSIEST PUBS Crackling fires, hot toddies and comforting roasts.

J

ust ten minutes out of town, towards Falmouth, lies the picturesque Punchbowl and Ladle pub, run by local landlord Graham and his team. With a charming thatched roof and parts of the building dating back to the 15th Century, this stunning building is incredibly snug, with the original feature-fireplace warming up the pub beautifully on a cold winter’s day. Take a book and curl up in an armchair with a coffee, or enjoy a rich glass of red with a top quality, locally-sourced meal from their seasonal menu. 29

F

or fine country dining, head out of Truro towards Newquay and seek out The Plume of Feathers in Mitchell. Head chef, Nat Tallents, was a contestant on Masterchef – The Professionals, so the local produce served is in skilled hands. Their winter menu features their take on classic British pub dishes, all hearty, warming and most importantly, delicious. The exposed stonework and two roaring fires give this fine restaurant a homely, comfortable feel, surrounded by intimate dining tables and spacious sofas that are perfect for whiling away a winter’s day.

T N

estled in a listed building just a short walk from the city centre The Thomas Daniell has got the fusion of old school comfort and new age edge just right. Whether you’re just after a glass of mulled wine by the fire, or a hearty bite to eat (their traditional raclette cheese is a must-have), they’ve got winter evenings covered. They also welcome Christmas parties, offering glamorous cocktails and an extensive wine list that are sure to get you into the festive spirit alongside a generous, locallysourced seasonal menu.

F

or a cosy lunch with a view, head down past Boscawen Park to Malpas and grab a seat at The Heron Inn. This riverside pub boasts gorgeous views out over the estuary, so bring a jumper and sit outside in the fresh air to watch the boats come and go. If the fresh air is a little too fresh, inside you will be able to sink back into one of their leather sofas next to the open fire with a hot drink. This year The Heron Inn will be holding their usual fireworks festivities on November 4th, and their New Year’s Eve fancy dress party is always a hit.

he County Arms is the other side of Truro, past Sainsbury’s as you head out of town, and it is an excellent spot for a relaxed drink or festive group meal. Recently refurbished, this spacious pub has a large decking area that overlooks the green valley behind and plenty of tables – making it ideal for a Christmas get-together with a view. Owned by St Austell Brewery, you can expect their most popular beers like Tribute on tap, as well as great quality local food.

Come and see a dazzling procession of willow-stick-and-tissue lanterns; handmade by artists, schools and community groups, float through the city streets. The parade takes the theme of ‘Glow’ this year. Alongside the visual spectacle, City of Lights is a feast of music and dance including samba, brass bands and pipes and drums. The procession sets off from the Richard Lander Monument, down Lemon Street onto Boscawen Street and along River Street. The lanterns will then loop around Little Castle Street onto Kenwyn Street, go through Victoria Square back to Boscawen Street, and make their way via Princes Street and Green Street to Lemon Quay. See page 62 for a map of the full route. RIVERSIDE WALKS

Embrace the crisp winter air and see the city from a new perspective.

T

ruro’s waterside location is very much ingrained in its history and personality. Its name is believed to have originated from tri-veru meaning ‘three rivers’ in the Cornish language, or tre-uro meaning ‘settlement on the river’. The city sits in an estuarial delta at the confluence of the rivers Kenwyn, Allen and Glasteinan, together forming the Truro River that flows into the Carrick Roads and the River Fal. Throughout the streets, you’ll see glimpses of the Kenwyn and Allen as they flow through and under the 18th century leats system, but if you’d like to enjoy the peace of the rivers in all their winter glory, there are plenty of paths and parks outside of the city for a quiet stroll or jog. Boscawen Park is Truro’s largest

open space, beautifully situated on the banks of the Truro River. The riverside walk goes around the outer periphery of the park and is great for exercising dogs. Wildlife is in abundance, particularly estuary birds like waders, divers, cormorants and ducks – the winter months bring swans and shelducks too. Children will love the duck pond on the opposite side of the road at Trennick Mill. For a circular walk from the city centre to Roseworthy, follow the leats to their source at the River Kenwyn. A 10km-round jaunt will take you through the woods at Treworder, Penrose Water Gardens, and Ninnis at the confluence of streams. The return to Truro is via the historic Victoria Gardens at the foot of the viaduct.

Wildlife is in abundance... the winter months bring swans and shelducks A short drive away is National Trust’s Trelissick Garden. Head down the hill from the car park towards Channals Creek and follow the path that runs along the shores of the steeply-sided Fal River. You’ll be rewarded with beautiful views and an encounter with the King Harry Ferry – one of the top ten ferry crossings in the world! 49

NINE LESSONS AND CAROLS Experience the much-loved Nine Lessons and Carols Christmas service in Truro, the city where it all started.

O

n the evening of 24 December, Christian congregations across the UK and beyond will gather for their traditional Christmas Eve worship. And the order of service they’ll follow will be as familiar to everyone in church as Christmas trees and wreaths of holly. Nine Lessons and Carols – nine Bible readings interspersed with Christmas hymns and carols – has been the basis for the traditional Christmas Eve service for decades. Variations of it are used by churches all over the world, and the best-known version is broadcast annually from King's College, Cambridge. But that’s not where the service originated. For

the first-ever Nine Lessons and Carols, you’d have to travel back in time to 10pm on the Christmas Eve of 1880, and a makeshift wooden chapel in the centre of Truro. It was here that the first Bishop of Truro, and later Archbishop of Canterbury, Edward White Benson was conducting worship while the city’s new cathedral was under construction. He had devised a new, lively, celebratory form of service that alternated short Bible readings with popular hymns and carols. His aim was to introduce a communityled service that could help create some sense of stability and ignite a passion for carol singing. It went down better than he could have expected with the 400-strong

congregation, and became a fixture in the city’s Christmas calendar. Other churches quickly adopted the new format, and in 1928, the new BBC started broadcasting a version of the service from King’s College, Cambridge. Broadcast annually, it is now heard by millions of people around the world. But why listen at home when you can take part in the real thing where it all began over 130 years ago? 23 and 24 December at 7pm Visit trurocathedral.org.uk for more details. 51

PROMOTION

AWARD-WINNING CORNISH CHEESE

For your Christmas table A

fter just 18 months of trading, Cornish cheesemakers, Curds & Croust, have already established themselves as the makers of truly desirable soft cheeses. In such a short time, they have gained an impressive clutch of regional and international awards and their cheeses are enjoyed by shoppers and restaurant-goers both in and out of the county. Curds & Croust was set up when Master cheesemaker, Martin Gaylard, spotted a gap in the market for quality Cornish cheese with truly artisan characteristics. Martin says, “I am delighted that in only 18 months our cheeses have already won so many prestigious awards. From the Global Cheese Awards to the World Cheese Awards, the British Cheese Awards and most recently in the South West Cheese Awards

where our truffle brie was awarded double gold.” In a collection that has been created to be distinctively memorable, the range currently consists of three artisan soft cheeses: a creamy soft brie; a rich bold and buttery camembert; and an earthy truffle brie with a truly unique character – perfect for the Christmas cheeseboard. Testament to the quality of the cheese produced by this fledgling company, is their customer-base which already boasts customers such as Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen and Rick Stein’s Michelin-starred seafood restaurant. Curds & Croust is available in good delis and farm shops throughout the Truro area: Great Cornish Food Store, Thornes Fruit & Veg, Trugian Farm Shop in Probus, and Spar in Carnon Downs. If you haven’t done so already, give them a try!
