Wominjeka! That’s how the local Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people, the traditional owners of Narrm (Melbourne), say ‘welcome’.

At this time of year we welcome the signs of spring in nature, from the blossoms in our city gardens to wildflowers carpeting the landscape in numerous locations in regional Victoria.

Our spring calendar is packed with exciting sporting events, such as the Bledisloe Cup, AFL Grand Final, Spring Racing Carnival and ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Come for the event and stay awhile to explore the city’s laneways, bars and alfresco dining options.

Spring is a time of renewal, making it the perfect time to book in for a hot springs, spa or wellbeing experience at one of the many locations around Victoria.

Take the time to travel further and enjoy the great outdoors. Spend a weekend glamping, rent a bike and explore a rail trail, or go hiking to one of our beautiful waterfalls. After the winter rain, they are particularly spectacular at this time of year.

This guide is packed with inspiration to enjoy the best of Melbourne and Victoria. It also explores what makes out city unique, such as the global appeal of Melbourne’s innovative coffee culture and our vibrant music scene, from the post-war jazz era to contemporary rock and pop.

Wherever you travel in Victoria this spring, you're sure to discover the season's best.

Love Melbourne Spring

By Sally Capp, Lord Mayor

It’s a magical time of year, watching Melbourne bounce its way into spring. The weather warms up and so does our city. It has us eagerly looking forward to a season full of live music, fiery sporting events, quaint outdoor dinners and thrilling nights at the theatre. We welcome all from near and far to join in on the vibrancy of the city as we prepare to host a spectacular schedule of events and festivities.

Here are my insider tips for how you can make this season one to remember.

Put away your winter wardrobe

While it feels nice to rug up in a warm winter coat, it feels even nicer to shed a layer and say hello to a fresh, spring wardrobe filled with patterns and beaming brights. Our streets, arcades, malls, markets and boutiques are filled with fresh pieces to build on your collection – and when accompanied by a group of friends or family, a shopping excursion is a fantastically fun outing.

Say hello to an afternoon in the sun

It doesn’t get much better than soaking up the afternoon sun, getting your dose of vitamin D in one of our lush open spaces. From our picnic-perfect parks and world-class gardens to our off-leash dog areas and playgrounds, there’s oodles of space to frolic about in. The grass really is greener in Melbourne – for you and your furry friends.

Treat yourself to a night out on the town

Melbourne is a magical place after dark. Experience a drink at a cityview rooftop bar, a divine outdoor dinner in your favourite laneway, then a breathtaking show at one of our fabulous live music venues, art precincts or underground comedy HQs. Whether filled with food or laughter – hopefully both – no night is ever the same in Melbourne.
