Planetary Travel

In 2008, a collective of artists created a scale model of the solar system along Hobsons Bay between St Kilda and Port Melbourne. Now, for every metre you cover on the self-guided Solar System Trail, you’re covering about a million kilometres. Walk the almost six kilometres from the Sun at the Marina Reserve lighthouse to Pluto at Sandridge Beach, and it’s like hurtling through 5.9 billion kilometres of space. Along the way, visit the eight planets, each scaled for size and distance. +stkildamelbourne.com.au

Artistic Vision

Stretching 17 kilometres from Brighton to Beaumaris is the Bayside Coastal Art Trail. For those interested in Melbourne’s creative heritage, tackling it on foot or by bicycle is a must. Along the path are more than 40 interpretive signs featuring artworks inspired by the coastal landscape. See where Arthur Boyd imagined Boats at Half Moon Bay or where Clarice Beckett took her portable studio to paint Sandringham Beach. There are also in-situ sculptures by Jeffrey Wilkinson and Lenton Parr. +bayside.vic.gov.au

Great Garden Walk

If you love strolling in the Royal Botanic Gardens on St Kilda Road, why not become acquainted with the epic Cranbourne Gardens in Melbourne’s southeast? Join a guide to explore the highlights of the Australian Garden on the Great Southern Land Walk; otherwise, set your own path. There are 300 hectares of remnant bushland here, with 10 kilometres of walking tracks and a landscape that’s home to more than 25 rare or threatened animal species. +rbg.vic.gov.au
