Family Fun
After a fun day out in the city with the kids these school holidays? Look no further! Melbourne has everything to entertain children of all ages no matter the weather.
ACMI
DreamCity
DreamCity is a high-tech venue where children are inspired to learn through fun career activities. It’s an amazing world where science, technology, engineering, the arts and maths collide in an explosion of fun. From operating flight simulators and fighting virtual fires to performing surgery and producing podcasts, kids aged three to 13+ will have a fun time and be inspired by the possibilities. +dreamcity.com.au
ArtPlay
ArtPlay brings together children up to 13 years of age and artists to explore and create innovative arts experiences that encourage self-expression and playful exchange. These are creative encounters that are by, for and with children and can be experienced at ArtPlay or in your own home. After, venture to the Birrarung Marr playground, a family favourite with tube slides, swinging hammocks and rock and rope climbing. Make sure you have a picnic packed and enjoy one of the city’s tranquil parks to wind down. +melbourne.vic.gov.au
ACMI
Navigate the universe of film, TV, videogames and art. One of the most visited moving image museums in the world, ACMI curates stories, films and objects to excite and challenge preconceptions. Check out the Story of the Moving Image, with its six zones exploring global cinema history, as well as travelling exhibitions, commissioned artworks and screenings in its theatres. While you’re there, use the Lens app to ‘gather’ your favourite artworks and objects so you can explore them further when you get home. +acmi.net.au
ArtVo
This immersive art gallery, or ‘trick art’ gallery, is the first of its kind in Australia. Unlike a traditional art gallery or museum, visitors are encouraged to touch and interact with the artworks, photographing themselves and becoming part of the art. In its 11 themed zones, visitors can explore large interactive 3D artworks painted directly onto the walls and floors. Additional sculptural elements allow them to immerse themselves into scenes, locations and famous paintings. +artvo.com.au

In the nineteenth century, a popular source of entertainment was magic lantern shows. As part of the exhibition, Light: Work From Tate’s Collection, ACMI is hosting Magic Lantern Show (9–11 September). This contemporary take on the original style of performance, combining familiar stories, glass slides and special optical effects, comes complete with a live musical accompaniment. +acmi.net.au
