100 Steps Sculpture Mandy & Sammi, Mamma Knows West

It’s a scenic corner of Melbourne, and now visitors to Hobsons Bay can see it in a different light on a photography tour.

Whether you live in the area or are visiting for the first time, get a new perspective of the inner west – its coastline, historical facades and parkland – on the Capture Hobsons Bay photography tour. Hobsons Bay City Council, in collaboration with Mandy and Sammi from the website Mamma Knows West, has developed a self-guided itinerary featuring 16 picturesque views and Instaworthy spots.

Where to Start

Water Everywhere

Head to Seaholme Pier. Look over the water and shoot images of yachts or watch for swans who often meander by the shore. Early birds should go to the west side of Cherry Lake in Altona, where you might be able to capture pelicans or other birds perched on the rocks in the foreground as the sun rises. In the parkland surrounding Newport Lakes, you’ll feel as though you’re miles from the city. The most photogenic spot here is the steppingstone bridge in the middle of the lake.

City Views

Those looking to get a shot of the city at golden hour – that beautiful time of day around sunset – should head to the Ferguson Street Pier in Williamstown. From the shoreline, look for a vantage point that allows you to frame up the boats moored at the yacht club in the foreground. You might also want to shoot along the pier to feature the beautiful historical light posts.

Local History

If you’re into architecture, The Substation, built by Victorian Railways in 1915 and now an arts destination, gives you the chance to photograph the neoclassical exterior and the bold artworks at the rear of the building. +hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au/phototour
