WISCONSIN RAPIDS Originally named “Ah-dah-wa-gam” (two sided rapids) by Native Americans because the once rushing rapids of the Wisconsin River were divided by a great boulder. The county seat of Wood County celebrated the centennial of its name in 2020, consolidating the two early towns of Centralia on the west side of the river and Grand Rapids on the east. Today, Wisconsin Rapids provides the access to services and infrastructure of a city: technology, blossoming industry, recognized education, healthcare, creative retail shops and restaurants along with abundant recreation and cultural opportunities, while continuing the Midwestern charm and hometown hospitality.

The Wisconsin Rapids area is known as cranberry country and proud of it! Our unique agricultural heritage makes the blossom and harvest seasons special to our area. Early settlers thought cranberry blossoms resembled the head of a crane, hence the name “crane berry,” which was later shortened to “cranberry.” Cranberry blossoms are pretty, delicate, pink flowers that bloom in late June through early July. The harvest season is the most picturesque time for cranberries and occurs late-September through mid-October.

In his inaugural season, Coach Pechmann built a winning program with all new players. This season is promising with newly hired assistant coaches, multiple players returning from the 2022-23 Riverkings roster, and players from around the world including the USA, Canada, Italy, England, Czech Republic, and Hungary Coach Pechmann is an advocate for the community – you will find his players working with various charities and community programs throughout the year. He is also very successful in developing young men into leaders. Last season’s successes included eight eligible players receiving offers to advance to higher levels of competition including Pro and NCAA D3 and ACHA D1 Colleges.
