LIVE ENTERTAINMENT

keeps the beat rolling in the Wisconsin Rapids Area as several community organizations host a wide variety of theater, live music, shows and performances all year round. Here you’ll find stages for every show, song and story, inspiring memories that will last long after the final bow.

The Arts Council of South Wood County is a cultural cornerstone of the community, working to bring in a variety of fun and inspiring performances for all ages since 1976. From classical concerts and comedians to upbeat jam sessions, magicians and more, the Arts Council is one of the area’s best connections to extraordinary entertainment. Each season brings new talent for a full schedule of enjoyment.

What’s a show without a stage? The Performing Arts Center of Wisconsin Rapids, one of the area’s premier performance venues, hosts shows not only for the Arts Council, but also several local performances and events. The 833-seat proscenium theatre located on the campus of Lincoln High School is a hub for central Wisconsin arts. This state-of-the-art space brings quality and excellence to every experience with the cherry paneling throughout, a nine-foot Steinway Model D concert grand piano, a Wenger ‘Diva’ acoustic shell, and a full-fly gallery.

Looking to enjoy the sun and musical fun? From June to August, watch as the Wisconsin Rapids City Band - the oldest municipal band in the state - performs under the summer sky at Robinson Park. Since the 1870’s, the Wisconsin Rapids City Band has delighted audience members in parades, celebrations, and their outdoor summer performances.

For over 40 years, live theatre showcasing local talent to central Wisconsin has thrived with the Wisconsin Rapids Community Theatre. Their season consists of four main stage productions, three youth productions, Silver Foxes senior theatre productions and more, encouraging community collaboration and well-being through the performing arts.

The Wisconsin Rapids Area and central Wisconsin region are home to many talented individuals and groups that bring musical fun to events and venues across the community. Whether it’s downtown along the river, popping up in a local pub or tavern, or headlining an area event, local musicians are plentiful. For updates on live music in the Wisconsin Rapids Area, follow the “Friends of Rapids Music” (FRM) Facebook group.

STORIES OF THE PAST

History comes alive in the Wisconsin Rapids Area through landmarks, museums and sacred spaces that invite visitors to connect with the stories that shaped our community.

Standing along the riverfront in Mead Rapids View Park, the 133-year-old Memorial Clock Tower commemorates the great efforts and progress made by the earliest settlers of Wisconsin Rapids and those that followed.

Head south along the Wisconsin River to explore the South Wood County Historical Museum, a beautifully preserved “Quality Row” 1907 mansion, originally home to banker Isaac P. Witter and his wife, Charlotte. Now housing stories of the area’s heritage, the museum displays permanent and traveling exhibits April through September on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. Additional tours can be scheduled upon request and the grounds are available for photographs.

Another stately colonial home lies on the western bank of the Wisconsin River in Port Edwards: The Alexander House – Center for Art & History. A combination art gallery and history museum, the Alexander House showcases exhibits that emphasize the region’s lumbering and papermaking heritage along with rotating art exhibits. Admission is free on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays from 1:00pm to 4:00pm.

A serene and spiritual retreat, the Marian Center for Peace invites reflection and connection. Located on the grounds of Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church, this pilgrimage destination houses a chapel, library, a relic image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, a copy of the Vilnius Divine Mercy painting and Shroud of Turin replicas.

Memorial Clock Tower - Mead Rapids View Park

To the west on the top of a low hill behind St. Philips Church lies another peaceful site: The Rudolph Grotto Gardens and Wonder Cave. Set among meandering paths and crooked bridges, the Grotto consists of over five acres with lush flower beds, numerous shrines, a museum and a gift shop. With intimate areas for meditation as well as more formal memorials and open picnic grounds, the Rudolph Grotto inspires wonder and a sense of timelessness.

Journey back in time to the mid-19th century and experience Historic Point Basse, the only living history museum on the Wisconsin River! Visit during annual events and see the restored home of Robert Wakely, blacksmith shop, schoolhouse and more. Citizen actors bring history to life with demonstrations of traditional skills, crafts and trades, offering a chance to step into the heritage of the Wisconsin Rapids Area.

A WISCONSIN LEGACY

Beautiful memorials and historic landmarks across the Wisconsin Rapids Area tell stories of service, sacrifice and community. Our community honors heroes and heritage with stunning views along the Wisconsin River and beyond.

Pay tribute to firefighters and EMS professionals who’ve dedicated their lives to protecting others by visiting the Wisconsin Fire & EMS Memorial , located in Ben Hansen Park. This moving tribute honors all Wisconsin firefighters and EMS providers, especially those who have fallen in the line of duty. Featuring a Memorial Wall, Final Alarm Bell Tower, Granite Legacy Stones, and the WFEM Visitors Center, the serene setting welcomes all who value service and heroism to visit and reflect.

In the heart of downtown Wisconsin Rapids on the east bank of the Wisconsin River, Veterans Memorial Park is dedicated to the veterans of central Wisconsin. Its peaceful setting offers more than a great view; it’s also home to popular events including Lunch by the River, a weekly summer event featuring local food trucks and outdoor entertainment.

Further north along the Wisconsin River, the Gift of Life Legacy Garden in Legion Park invites visitors to honor the life-saving practice of organ donation. Central Wisconsin Gift of Life maintains the space to honor living organ donors, recipients, those that have decided to be donors and those families that made the difficult choice to allow their loved ones to continue to live through organ or tissue donation.

Calling all racing fans! Visit the Dick Trickle Memorial Project in Rudolph, WI, childhood home of the racing legend. The statue depicts Dick Trickle forever saluting the crowd. With more than 1,000 victories in about 30 years, he was one of the greatest short track racers in history, going on to race in over 450 NASCAR races and becoming the 1989 NASCAR Winston Cup Series Rookie of the Year.

EXPERIENCE CRANBERRIES

www.VisitWisRapids.com/Cranberries

The Wisconsin Rapids Area is known as cranberry country and we’re proud of it! Our unique geographic and agricultural heritage makes the blossom and harvest seasons special to our area. One of the largest producers of cranberries in the world, the Wisconsin Rapids Area ignites with the “sea of red” cranberries amidst blazing orange and yellow fall color from late-September to midOctober.

The best way to experience cranberry harvest is by taking a tour. Reserve an in-depth tour with Splash of Red Cranberry Harvest Tours in Pittsville; or save your seat at Rooted in Red in Biron, a fifth-generation cranberry farm and event venue that hosts select tours, farm-tofork dinners and specialty events throughout the year.

Want something more relaxed? Take a self-guided drive along the Cranberry Highway TM (pg. 7)! The 50-mile rural route stretches along century-old cranberry beds from Wisconsin Rapids to Warrens, and between Pittsville and Nekoosa. Harvest season is a busy time of year for farmers. Visitors are reminded to stay in their vehicles for their safety and protection of the crop. State Historical Marker #86: “Cranberry Culture” along WI State Highway 54, 0.8 miles west of County Highway GG, provides a perfect photo backdrop of blazing fall color.

Last year’s team ended the season with a division title and an invitation to the USPHL National Championship Tournament held in Utica, NY. This season, the team is focused on repeating its divisional success and to advance deeper in the National Tournament.

The Riverkings are a talented and diverse team, with present and past players coming from all across the US, Canada, UK, Czech Republic, Norway, Italy, Russia, and Hungary.

Coaches Paul Pechmann and Derek Puttick both have extensive resumes. Pechmann was a former captain at South Kent Prep and played with the UConn Huskies. Puttick has been coaching for over forty years with impressive successes in the US, Canada, Australia, and Latvia. Both coaches possess the experience and professional connections to guide players toward higher levels of competition, whether that be NCAA, ACHA, NCDC, or Professional leagues.

While the focus is on hockey, the organization is an advocate for the local community and players routinely work with local charities and area schools.

Where Water Meets Wonder

Lake Wazeecha, the Native American name for “lake of the land of the pines,” lies nestled in South Wood County Park, a popular destination for families and outdoor enthusiasts alike. It features two beach areas – White Sands and Red Sands – plus the trail around the lake, an accessible fishing dock and plenty of space for boating, fishing, water skiing and more. In 2016, Lake Wazeecha hosted the World Waterski Show Championships.

Rapids Aqua Skiers

Catch a show on the water with the Wisconsin Rapids Aqua Skiers Show Ski Team, an award winning, family-oriented organization bringing weekly FREE shows throughout the summer. Shows consist of various acts choreographed to a common theme: a stage show on water! Since 1959, the Aqua Skiers have delighted tens of thousands of spectators with summer performances. The Aqua Skiers host the annual Wisconsin State Water Ski Show Championships, the world’s largest and longest running water ski show tournament, at Lake Wazeecha.

Venture onto the pristine water of Lake Nepco, accessible from Nepco Lake County Park just south of Wisconsin Rapids. Built in the 1920s by the Nekoosa Edwards Paper Co., the park features a boat ramp, benches, picnic area, playground, accessible pier, shelter and nearly 10 miles of multi-use trails. Lake Dexter totals 300 acres surrounded by more than 1,000 acres of wild, natural areas. Dexter County Park, the largest park in Wood County, features two boat launches, an accessible fishing pier, fish cleaning house and more. Going for a catch? In the waters of the #WisRapidsArea you’ll find northern pike, walleye, bass, musky, perch and bluegill.

Further south lies Lake Petenwell , Wisconsin’s second largest body of water (23,040 acres) and home to a variety of fishing tournaments throughout the year. Anglers and boating enthusiasts alike will enjoy putting in at the public boat launches of Lake Petenwell and Lakes Arrowhead, Camelot and Sherwood, all pristine locations for boating, fishing and simply enjoying life on the water.

On its 500-mile journey from its headwaters on the Wisconsin-Michigan border, the Wisconsin River runs through downtown Wisconsin Rapids and continues south through Port Edwards, Nekoosa, and beyond. The hardest working river in the U.S., once full of logging rafts, the river now demonstrates success in both industry and recreation with several scenic parks, trails and boat/kayak launches along the riverbanks of Wisconsin Rapids Area communities.
