Our purpose, working collaboratively with businesses, is to develop and promote York - nationally and internationally - as a vibrant and attractive place to live, visit, study, work and do business. The company has worked hard to deliver on its mission to improve York’s competitiveness and effectiveness for the benefit of its communities and businesses. We have pursued our dual objectives to capture more value for the city and its surrounding area by promoting York in a joined-up way and to do this collaboratively, avoiding duplication of effort and resource. We all have a shared interest in the success of York and the Board is committed to fulfilling the ambitions of the York Economic Strategy 2016-2020 and to working closely with our two Local Enterprise Partnerships. The Board welcomed Cllr David Carr who joined as a Director in June 2016 and Charlie Croft as our Client. Mary Weastell joined City of York Council as Chief Executive in August 2016 and we work closely with her to ensure that we are fulfilling the requirements of our Agreement. We also work closely with Andrew Lowson and the Board of the Business Improvement District to ensure collaboration not duplication. We wish Philip Thake well in his new role as Governor with The Company of Merchant Adventurers. We thank him for his contribution to the setting up of Make It York and his service as a Director for two years.

If year one of Make It York was about getting the company firmly established, year two has been about being more ambitious. The taking on and refreshing of Venturefest Yorkshire, the setting up a new Easter festival for families and the creation of the York Culture Awards are just three examples of a more expansive agenda for the city. This ambition reflects a company more confident of itself and absolutely up for the job of marketing the city in a creative, assertive way. This will pick up even more pace in the year ahead. This review sets out some of the things Make It York has worked on over the last 12 months. We have used small case studies to bring to life some of the work that we do. We remain hungry to work with as many different companies and organisations as possible, for the benefit of York and we have listed the range of opportunities and possibilities for collaboration. Once again in the last year, we have had terrific support from a range of partners. Our stated priorities for the next 12 months are all focused on continuing to work on the development and promotion of the city.

Every year the York Residents Festival is organised as a thank you for the warm welcome residents offer to the city’s 6.9 million visitors. Over seventy attractions, shops and restaurants took part in 2017, the biggest festival yet. The International Centre for Birds of Prey at Helmsley was one of the participants, benefitting from an additional 500 visitors over the weekend and introducing new audiences to this fabulous attraction. Taking part in the festival is free for Visit York members and the event is supported by dedicated print and online marketing.

By a process of recommendation from Science City York, in view of their perfect fit with the brief requirements, Bright White Ltd were chosen to represent York at the UNESCO Data Cities exhibition in Paris, 2017. The exhibition features work from all nine UNESCO Cities of Media Arts, bringing these creative pioneers together under one roof. The installation at the Centre des Arts runs until July when the UNESCO Creative Cities all meet up. York’s work will sit alongside powerful works from all over the world including Japan, the USA, The Republic of Korea, Senegal, Austria, Israel, Lyon and the hosts, Enghien Les Bain near Paris. The exhibition has offered Bright White an opportunity to network with the other UNESCO Media Arts creative cities, sharing knowledge and best practice. Early conversations with the other cities have already successfully planted the seeds for future collaboration.

Can you Escape? is an award-winning escape game company, started in Edinburgh in 2014 by Alastair Watson and Lauren Plßss. Over the last 18 months or so, the company has grown and opened an additional escape game venue in York in May last year. When they opened here they didn’t know the city well and wanted to network with businesses from across York and to get the word out quickly to potential customers.

After joining Visit York, the company attended tourism networking events, racked leaflets in the Visitor Centre and their arrival was broadcast to thousands through the Visit York social media channels. Offering promotions as part of the York Pass, as well as being included in other publications has also helped to boost bookings.

In 2016 we introduced Yorkie - ’the Travelogue Dog’, who, through a series of short films, took viewers with him on a series of canine adventures around York and North Yorkshire. The film crew and Yorkie stayed at the Mount Royale and as a result the hotel featured in the Yorkie film, which generated over 12,000 views on YouTube.

SHAMBLES MARKET, CITY CENTRE & EVENTS The city centre team manages the the daily Shambles Market as well as the new Shambles Food Court. Blueberry Hill Preserves is a Yorkshire Company which had already traded on the York Christmas Market in 2015. Whilst they traded well, the owners wanted to achieve even better sales in 2016. Working with the Make It York city centre team, they decided to slightly amend their product and they also invested in a more prominent pitch. This turned out to be a great success and changed their whole business year from ’average’ to ’exceptional’.

Make It York works closely with the Business Improvement District and BID Executive Director, Andrew Lowson, to deliver ongoing enhancements to our city centre. Both organisations work alongside each other and collaborate on projects that benefit York and its businesses. The York Business Improvement District (BID) is a business-led partnership that delivers programmes and services aimed at improving York City Centre’s local economy and environment. BID programmes and services fulfil one or several of the four agreed initiatives: 1. Appearance and environment
1. APPEARANCE AND ENVIRONMENT The BID street cleansing programme delivers enhanced cleaning services to the city centre, including steam-cleaning and power-washing, graffiti, flytipping and gum removal from pavements and a rapid response service available to all BID businesses. In 2017: The street cleansing programme will scale up operations throughout the BID area. The BID will also survey and improve current wayfinding and signage and city centre street furniture that require maintenance.
2. SAFETY AND SECURITY The BID Street Rangers provide a welcoming presence throughout the city centre assisting visitors, engaging with businesses and deterring anti-social behaviour. They also work with local partners and police providing support to address issues such as homelessness and begging. In 2017: The Street Rangers will continue their work with local organisations and agencies to deliver services that contribute to the vision of safety and security in York. This will also include concerns surrounding race days and river safety.

3. EVENTS AND FESTIVALS 4. Business support These were developed after thorough consultations with businesses conducted prior to the BID’s 2015 ballot. Programmes and services are financed and supported by a fund raised through a 1% levy on the rateable value of £12,500 and above from the businesses within the designated BID area.
The BID sponsored the unprecedented winter lights on the city wall bars and supported several city-wide events aimed at increasing footfall to the city centre. Such events included York Ice Trail, Residents Festival and Fashion City York’s ’Six Days of Style’: Following this past season’s success, the winter lights will return to the city centre next year with additional features that will further highlight York’s historic cityscape and serve as a must-see attraction during the winter months.
4. BUSINESS SUPPORT The investment from the BID addresses the identified initiatives and raises the standards in the city centre to draw in visitors, families, professionals and investors to York.
The BID supports projects such as Indie York and those delivered by BID area street trading associations that invest in the development and promotion of York’s local business communities. In 2017: The BID will explore efficient city centre car-parking options, cost-saving service packages and strategies to market York locally as a retail and leisure experience.

YORK HIVE £59,000 RAISED SO FAR… Make It York launched York’s crowdfunding platform in March 2016 at the city’s historic Bedern Hall. This new initiative is a part of Spacehive, a national crowdfunding platform with a mission to make it as easy as possible for as many people as possible to bring their civic environment to life. The York Hive enables local people to see York Projects online and pledge as little as £2 to make a project possible. CASE STUDY: York Arts Barge is just one of a number of local projects that have successfully achieved their crowdfunding goals since the launch of the York Hive. The project consists of a community collective of performers and arts enthusiasts who want to create a unique venue for the arts in York - The Arts Barge. Significant works were needed to help restore the barge and after working closely with the team at Make It York to set a realistic crowdfunding goal, the project met its target and then successfully applied for planning permission.
