MASSIVE BUS BOOST
NEW BUS services will serve the Vega Baja region, after an amended plan was green-lit and advertised by the Valencian government, in what amounts to a public transport revolution for the area. A draft plan was unveiled nearly a year ago, and now a decade-long contract to provide a service using 16 buses has been announced. The tender has been published in the Valencia Official Gazette, with routes taking in Torrevieja and Orihuela City, in addition to the Torrevieja and Vega Baja Hospitals. The services will include
by Alex Trelinski
all 27 municipalities across the Vega Baja region from Albatera in the north to Pilar de la Horadada in the south, giving everybody a guaranteed bus connection to a hospital, in addition to first-time direct and indirect links across the Vega Baja. For example, the L5 route will link up the Pilar municipality with the Orihuela Costa, San Miguel de Salinas, and Orihuela City, whilst the L7 route will run from Orihuela City to Jacarilla, before going to Los Montesinos, Torrevieja, and then back inland
to San Miguel. Because of their central location, Quesada and Algorfa feature on three routes, with the San Fulgencio area being on a service that includes Almoradi, Benijofar, and Quesada, Local councils were asked for suggestions and amendments to the original plans unveiled in May 2018, and a number of changes have been made to the final package, which will now include a direct connection on the L7 service to the Entre Naranjos urbanisation in the Orihuela municipality. It´s unclear when the services are expected to start.

A VIOLENT gang of robbers that operated on the Orihuela Costa and used social media to lure one victim, have been arrested by the Guardia Civil. Two men and a 37-yearold woman, all of Spanish nationality, were detained in their home Murcia region town of Las Torres de Cotillas and put in front of a Magistrates Court in Molina de Segura. On the instruction of an Orihuela court, the woman was remanded into custody, whilst her two accomplices were bailed. The Guardia Civil in Pilar de la Horadada launched an

investigation after a 34-yearold Spaniard was stabbed last month, after arranging to meet the woman that he had been in contact with via social media. The woman arrived with two men, and besides stabbing their victim, they took his money and mobile phone. The trio also struck at an
Orihuela Costa property, where they assaulted a 21-year-old Spaniard, and stole a computer, a games console, and money. The gang were all charged with two counts of robbery with violence, with the woman getting an extended rap sheet, as when the Guardia swooped on her, they discovered her behind the wheel of a car, despite being disqualified from driving.

SPAIN goes to the polls on Sunday in the General Election, with voters spoilt for choice in the Valencia region, as the regional government election will be held on the same day. Nationally, barring a shock result, the PSOE socialists, under current prime minister Pedro Sanchez, are set to be easily the largest single party in Madrid, according to opinion polls. The PSOE though will need to do a deal with the left-wing
by Alex Trelinski
Podemos party and a regional grouping, perhaps from the Basque region, to form a majority government. An opposition coalition of the Partido Popular, the far right Vox, and the centrist Ciudadanos party would still fall short of a majority, according to a survey published last weekend by the El Pais newspaper. A PSOE-Compromis-led coalition has been in charge of
the Valencia government since 2015 under PSOE president Ximo Puig, and polls suggest that the PSOE numbers will rise in the region, If the surveys are correct, the PSOE and Compromis will remain in power, with the Partido Popular set to suffer further losses in what would be their worst-ever regional result, whilst Vox could get up to six people elected for the first time, whilst Ciudadanos is also set to see an increase in representation.

Roman relics turn up in Spain
THREE valuable and historically important statues that were stolen in Rome have surfaced in Spain. One of them, a second century white marble depiction of a female worth €200,000 was stolen from the garden of a private residence belonging to well known Italian comedian Roberto Benigni, Another, a statue of Emperor Septimus Severus from the same era and worth around €45,000 was taken from a public park and was found on sale in a Barcelona antique shop. The third was also on sale in a Catalan antique shop, an 18th century work “Diana Cazadora” which by Simon Russell was stolen from the Rome’s Villa Borghese public park. dedicates itself to recovering A unit of Italy’s stolen historical property Carabinieri Corps that known informally as the Art

ing outside with his eight year old brother when the weapon was discharged at about 11.00 in the evening. The emergency ser-
vices received several calls from the public and were quickly in attendance but the boy was declared dead at the scene. The family and the victim are Portuguese nationals who were
staying with friends in the town. It is unclear how the children got hold of the shotgun and why youngsters of that age were allowed to be playing with a loaded weapon.

All my readers should consider attending one of these essential events
Every week Chorus publish articles to help Brits here in Spain navigate safely and securely through areas such as investing, retirement planning, pension transfers, succession planning, tax and legal matters. This week I felt my column inches would be even better served by telling you all about a very important series of seminars that are returning to our area on May8th, 9th and 10th, which cover all these important subjects. One of the most common pieces of feedback I’ve experienced over the years from thousands of expats here in Spain is that sometimes it’s hard to know
who to believe when it comes to vital information regarding your pensions, investments and tax planning. You can ask 3 people a question and you get 3 different answers, and often this means people are getting information on critical subjects from social media or a guy at the bar! The Finance Tour returns to Spain for the third year, bringing experts from FTSE listed UK institutions, to answer your questions directly. The seminars start with a short presentation from each company, followed by an open Q+A. At the end of the session, you can enjoy a
coffee whilst having the opportunity to speak one-on-one with the panel of experts. For those who already hold investments like ISAs, UK bonds/ platforms, QROPS/Spanish Investment Bonds, this gives you a great opportunity to ensure your product is appropriate and working for you in the best way. For those considering a new pension transfer or investment or trying to understand matters such as Wealth Tax or IHT here in Spain, this is an unprecedented opportunity to speak directly with the product providers before you go ahead
and seek independent advice. I appreciate there seems to be a different seminar, breakfast meeting or event nearly every week in Spain, but The Finance Tour is truly unique in that it gives you the chance to hear directly from a group of trusted companies who manage the pensions and investments of over 25 million customers worldwide. Look out for The Finance Tour’s adverts in page 15 of the Weekender or visitwww.thefinancetour.com for bookings and information. We really hope to see as many of you as possible at these essential events.

FUGITIVE FOUND by Simon Russell
AN ITALIAN drug trafficker was arrested by the National Police, as he calmly walked down an Orihuela City street. The 48-year-old man had been wanted by Swiss authorities for six years to face charges, and was the subject of a European Arrest Warrant. After being on the run since 2013, police were tipped off that he was in the Orihuela area, and he was hauled off to a Madrid court to face an extradition hearing.
AIRPORT ATTACK by Simon Russell
A MAN attacked two people with a knife in the early hours of Monday morning in the departure area of Madrid´s Barajas airport. The 30-year-old Spaniard lunged at a 25-year-old Mexican woman close to the check-in desks, and then tried to knife a 48-year-old Romanian man who rushed to her aid. Both victims were treated in hospital for minor injuries, whilst the attacker was arrested by the National Police, who later said that he had been arrested before on multiple occasions, as well as been the subject of various restraining orders.
Three Vehicle Colision by Alex Trelinski
A MOTORIST died in a three vehicle collision on the CV-91 in the Vega Baja region on Tuesday morning. The accident involving two cars and a van happened shortly before 11.00 am in the Benejúzar area, with firefighters from Almoradi and Orihuela having to free the injured driver, who was trapped in his car. The man suffered severe chest injuries and died later in hospital.
Minor arrested in sex blackmail case POLICE have released details of a case of blackmail that they think may not be an isolated incident due to the nature of the crime. The case occurred in Gandia after a man arranged a meeting with a woman he met through a dating app. When he arrived at the rendezvous address the young woman said her husband was present and the man would have to pay him €50 before they
by Alex Trelinski
had sex. He handed this over and started undressing but the alleged husband then entered the room, saying that the girl was under-age and if more cash was not handed over they would report him to the police. Photos were also taken of the victim in a state of undress and of the ID he was carrying.
The man was allowed to dress and then frogmarched to an ATM where he withdrew €110. When the group returned to the house the victim was told to leave and he later reported the incident. Police identified the girl as a 17 year old who had recently escaped from a juvenile detention centre while her 35 year old accomplice is already well known to them and has a
long criminal record. Both were arrested and charged with theft and threatening behaviour while police are also looking into whether the dogs they have - which they threatened the victim with - are dangerous breeds. They are also investigating whether the pair have carried out similar crimes but the victims have chosen not to come forward.

AN EFFIGY of Catalunya´s former president, Carles Puigdemont, was burnt and shot at in a town in the southern region of Andalucia, amidst controversy as the footage went viral. Coripe in Sevilla Province has an annual Easter Day fake execution of a figure meant to represent “what is negative for society”, which they call “setting Judas on fire.” This year, several men, including local police officers, shot at an effigy of Catalan separatist Puigdemont dozens of times, with the act being condemned by Spain´s foreign minister, Josep Borrell on Monday. The real Puigdemont is currently living abroad in self-exile after fleeing Spain following a failed secession bid in October 2017. The socialist mayor of Coripe, Antonio Perez, defended his town´s tradition:“We make a figure that represents evil.
What we’re killing is evil. That’s it,” he told reporters, before citing others who had been mock-executed in the past -- “politicians, bankers, Arabs...” Puigdemont, who is still wanted in Spain over his role in the secession bid, slammed the mock execution. He said they were making “mockery of the struggle for the freedom of political prisoners and exiles,” in reference to jailed or exiled separatist leaders like himself.”

TAX CON ARRESTS SPANISH TAX authorities have been ripped off to the tune of nearly 50 thousand euros in a scam involving the sale high-end value cars. Seven Spanish nationals have been arrested in Torrevieja, Alicante, and Benidorm, after authorities noticed something suspicious about a Guardamarbased company that registered two cars to one owner, and then just two days later, the vehicles were transferred again. The gang bought

the expensive cars in Germany, and avoided paying IVA both in Germany and Spain, helped by false invoices and changing documents. 12 high-end cars were processed this way, with the Guardia Civil detaining five men and two women, on charges of using fake documents. Authorities have already recovered three of the vehicles, with the location of the other nine, also known.
Woman laid dead
for five years QUESTIONS are once again being asked about the changing face of Spanish society after the mummified corpse of an elderly woman was found in her home an estimated five years after she died. Her body was found in the affluent Salamanca district of Madrid when authorities had been alerted after a niece, who lives in Israel, was unable to contact her aunt. The National Police went to the property and saw her body lying on the kitchen floor through a window. An autopsy confirmed the likely timeline of her death and that she

probably died from natural causes. Her only family were several nieces and nephews who all lived abroad and neighbours had assumed that she had joined them after not being seen for a while. An increasing amount of elderly Spanish are living alone and many have no family or have lost touch with them. This also sadly means that many are dying alone and sometimes it is several days before people are aware although five years is an extreme case.

Fisherman’s blues A landowner in Javea who built a staircase on the cliffs for his personal access to fishing grounds has been denounced by IROX, the Javea Oceanographic Institute. Former Barcelona president Sandro Rosell has been acquitted of money laundering charges after spending nearly two years in prison. Court officials in Madrid said on Wednesday that there was not enough evidence for a guilty verdict on charges related to the sale of television rights for matches involving the Brazilian national soccer team. coming from the sale of TV rights and the organization of friendly matches featuring Brazil as well as from a sponsorship contract between Nike and Brazil. They said he helped launder nearly 20 million euros related to commissions for Brazil matches.
SCAM CALL WARNING
SPAIN´S consumer association, FACUA, has warned people not to answer phone calls with one of five country prefixes, since they could end up with a huge bill. Those who know someone in any of the countries listed and normally speak to them by phone should check the number on their screen before picking up, and ignore it if they do not recognise it. FACUA has had numerous reports of calls from numbers with the country codes 225 (Côte
d’Ivoire, formerly the Ivory Coast), 233 (Ghana), 234 (Nigeria), 355 (Albania), and 387 (Bosnia), who end up getting charged just for answering. Where a mobile or landline customer does fall victim to one of these additional-tariff number scams, FACUA says, they should notify their operator in writing to advise them and request an itemised bill which breaks down the cost of the rogue call, and the customer can opt not to pay that portion of the bill.

LOVE TRIANGLE BRITS RELEASED ON BAIL Woman arrested for gender violence by Simon Russell
LOCAL Police in Valencia arrested a 50 year old woman for assaulting her partner while under the influence of alcohol and drugs. The agents were on patrol in the
Monteolivete area when they were called to the incident and tracked the woman to a nearby park. She was clearly intoxicated and became aggressive to the police before being detained when she
admitted to the assault on her male partner. He needed treatment for his injuries and said that he was regularly hit, threatened and insulted by the detainee who has substance abuse issues.

Drivers beware
British duke buying up over here by Simon Russell
by Alex Trelinski
PLANNED new motoring regulations in Valencia City will have the effect of favouring both greener forms of transport and people on foot while bringing in extra regulations for drivers. Two thirds of the cities streets will have a 30kmph limit as all single lane roads will have that as a maximum speed. Disabled drivers will be able to use the dedicated bus-taxi lanes and the issue of loading and unloading is also being looked at. Concerning push-bikes and motorbikes there will be no circumstances where they can use pavements while electric scooters have a maximum speed of 10kmph in pedestrian areas and 15 kmph on bicycle lanes, rising to 20kmph on certain lanes. Last but not least, using your push-bike with a dog tethered to it is also now prohibited. All the new measures, 55 in total, were approved at a plenary session last week and are expected to gain final sign off at the end of the month before coming into force.
NAMED as the richest person in the world under the age of 30, the Duke of Westminster is expanding his already substantial property portfolio by purchasing some prime real estate here in Spain. Hugh Grosvenor, who inherited the title after the death of his father in 2016, is buying large chunks of property in the exclusive Chamberi neighbourhood in Madrid. These include the prestigous Arrando building where apartments sell for up to 1.6 million euros and which he has added to his extensive investments in the Spanish luxury market, a country he has known since childhood. The duke is preparing to invest up to 300 million euros in Spain according to sources although he keeps his finances almost as secret as his private life. The 26 year old duke owns an estimated 0.22% of all properties in the UK (including “about half” of London) and has an estimated personal wealth of around €10 billion. The true figure is probably much higher as Grosvenor Europe, which he heads, manages a portfolio of assets estimated to be worth 2.7 trillion euros.

MIXED BLESSINGS by Simon Russell
THE STORMS that hit Alicante Province over the Easter weekend brought good news for regional reservoirs. The biggest downpours recorded in April since 1946 have filled up reservoirs and left experts saying that there should be no water issues for local farmers for the rest of the year. The downside was that domestic tourism suffered a massive hit over Easter, with numbers of people travelling into the region from across Spain vastly reduced because of the weather and the scrapping of the traditional crowd-pulling processions. With the exception of the Benidorm area, hoteliers reported a large spate of lastminute cancellations.

WASH OUT - Javea
JAVEA found itself at the epicentre of the worst Easter weather to hit this part of Spain in most people’s living memory, with stories of people travelling there for a weekend by the beach ending up in emergency accommodation after being flooded out. Over 300 litres per square metre swamped the Marina Alta’s second town between Sunday and Easter Monday, trapping people inside cars and driving people out of properties. 89 people were housed in a temporary shelter said the Red Cross and 23 had to be rescued from badly flooded properties by the fire brigade.
13
In other parts of the region Saturday had seen the worst of the weather with firefighters being called out more than 180 times across Alicante province. Tree falls, cut off roads, falling walls, overflowing sewage and trapped vehicles were the most common problems. Several vehicles fell into ditches as conditions became virtually impossible to drive in and the Vega Baja was particularly badly hit. Remarkably there were no reports of any serious injuries in what will certainly go down as a memorable Easter break for many, although unfortunately not for the right reasons.

World News World’s most dangerous bird claims a victim A cassowary unlikely killer.
BIRDS kill a handful of people each year, usually after collisions with cars or aeroplanes while avian flu threatened to develop into an epidemic after crossing over to humans. However the sub-category of the bird deaths mortality tables (if there is such a thing, and there probably is) of people killed by actual bird attacks is so small as to be virtually unmeasurable. It now seems that the actuaries or whoever measures these things may have to dust off their records, as this week a 75 year old Florida man was killed
by his pet cassowary, an ostrich type creature dubbed The Worlds Most Dangerous Bird (my capitals). The victim, named as Marvin Hajos, was found in his pet’s enclosure in a pool of blood with deep lacerations caused by the creature. He was still alive but sadly died later in hospital from his wounds. It is believed that the unfortunate Mr Hajos tripped when feeding the cassowary which then attacked him, feeling threatened. They weigh up to 60 kilos and grow to about six feet tall and a spokesman for
a local zoo said that they “can slice any predator open with their talons or even kill them with a well aimed kick”. Despite the somewhat worrying threat of disembowelment or being kicked to death, the only other confirmed cassowary killing was almost a century ago in their native Australia that of a small boy who was teasing one. This case highlights the fact that whatever you think of the good people of America, they are certainly adept at coming up with original ways to shuffle off this mortal coil.

Business & Finance Jumbo bill for giant of the skies
The giant plane dwarves vehicles on the runway.
A Russian Antonov, one of the world’s largest cargo planes, has been parked at Alicante airport since the end of March, something the airport is charging over a thousand euros a day for the privilege of. The plane, from the Ivory Coast, landed on 28 March without cargo and has not yet set a departure
date. “Parking fees” are calculated on the weight of the craft and duration of the stopover, meaning that the owners have clocked up a bill of over €20,000 to date. Apparently the plane is awaiting instructions for loading and is then capable of flying anywhere in the world. The Antonov has a capacity of 150 tons and can
also carry 88 passengers but to give an idea of the size of the cargo an Antonov was used to transport yachts for the Volvo World Tour and can also carry helicopters. This is only the second time an aircraft of this size has been at Alicante-Elche airport although the last visitor, another Antonov, only stayed for a few hours.

TORONTO by Yvonne Hollywood, Worldwide Horizons The city of Toronto is the largest in the state of Ontario, with almost 3 million inhabitants, which is made up of diverse ethnic groups who, in the main speak in English however actually over 160 languages are spoken here.
It is a thriving city for the arts, theatre and music crowds and easily gives its neighbour, New York a run for its money in producing Broadway shows. It is also a city of
legendary sights, including the CN Tower, the largest freestanding for 32 years (beaten by the Burj Khalif in 2007). A trip to this tower is not for the fainthearted, given its glass floor. For those not put off by dizzying heights or see-through floors, the revolving restaurant at the top of the tower offers spectacular views over the city, especially as the sun goes down. For sports fans, a visit to the watch the Toronto Maple Leafs is a must. Getting tickets for the games is quite easy. Matches are usually held in the evening, and with numerous bars and restaurants in the area all dedicated to the theme, it’s a full evening out. For foodies, make sure you visit the Saint Laurence area – there are actual tours dedicated to taking you around this which ensure that not only do you eat at the best places, you also get a running history of the local area too.
As always, the hop on-hop off will give you best value for money in guiding you to all the most interesting places to see as well as being a ‘taxi’ for getting you back home (the stop closest to your hotel) when yoú ve exhausted yourself. Shopping is plentiful in Toronto, make sure you leave plenty of space in your case when you arrive, as, similar to New York, the streets are filled with small boutiques offering all new fashions and at very reasonable prices. If you are a keen walker, try walking a length of Yonge Street, the longest street in the world. The full 56 kilometres though, might be asking a little too much! As a major city, as you would expect, there are exhibitions and festivals being held throughout the year, so always check what is going on locally. If the weather is inclement, it s not really ´ a big deal in Toronto – many of their shopping malls connect underground and are fully heated – to be expected in a city whose winter temperature can drop to -7 degrees (and that s not ´ taking into account the wind-chill factor!). Although yes, it may be cold, it is definitely worth visiting Toronto preChristmas – the city is lit up as each mall tries to outdo the next in a fantastic
display of lights. Having made your way to Toronto, you simply cań t leave without making the quintessential trip to Niagara. Offered by many travel agents and tour operators in Toronto, this can either be a day tour (takes about 10 hours) or you can opt to stay at one of the hotels at the falls. No matter what time of year you visit, the falls are spectacular in real life. Visit the caves underneath them and walk to (almost) the edge or take a trip on the famous “Maid of the Mist” and yoù ll really get a feel for the power of these three horse-shaped falls. For those that prefer a calmer experience, take the ferry out to the Toronto Islands. Centreville Park is an amusement park for younger kids, or visit the petting zoo on Center Island. This is also a popular picnic area and a great swimming area for smaller kids, given the calm and shallow waters. Toronto also excels in cutting edge technology, so doń t miss out on a visit to the Science Museum, innovative in offering effects and interactive fun for all the family. Toronto is a well-connected city offering accommodation in all budgets. If you are planning to travel, doń t forget the new(ish) requisite of a valid Visa for visiting.

More luxury buyers
Tracking power in the home ANALYSIS by energy experts Selectra has found that people in Murcia spend the most on electricity as a proportion of their income, 3.38%. Andalusian residents are just behind at 3.37% while those in Cantabria are the thriftiest at just 2.19%, although this is more to do with higher average incomes
than actual usage. Electra say that this highlights the issue of “power poverty” where the wealthy and the poor pay more or less the same amount but for those less well off it is a significant chunk of their earnings. The average annual household electric bill in Spain is now €800.74, according to Selectra’s latest figures.

Needless to say, most buyers just pull out of any deal. For this reason alone, private landlords are recommended to get legal

Housing growth cap on the table THE UK’s Labour Party are considering controversial measures to cap house growth, something they talked about in more detail this week. Shadow Housing Secretary John Healey said that the Bank of England could be asked to control house prices the same way they now do with inflation. How they would go about that isn’t exactly clear, but restrictions on mortgage lending seem the most likely method. The proposals are a response to the rapid

growth in UK property prices over the last decade or so, effectively pricing first time buyers and those on lower wages out of the market. A recent think tank reported that the Bank of England should be set a target of zero house price growth for the next five years, allowing many peoples income to catch up with the sector. Obviously many who already own their home as well as free market advocates are likely to oppose the idea.

DNA is a fantastic piece of scientific analysis, which of course was sussed out by boffins from Leicester University. It´s not all about tracking down criminals, but can be used for important historical discoveries, like finding out that the ancestors of the people who built Stonehenge travelled west across the Mediterranean from where you would find modern day Turkey, before reaching Britain. Researchers in London compared DNA extracted from Neolithic human
remains found in Britain with that of people alive at the same time in Europe. The Neolithic inhabitants appear to have travelled from Anatolia (modern Turkey) to Iberia before winding their way north, and got to Britain around 4,000BC. The migration to Britain was just one part of a general, massive expansion of people out of Anatolia in 6,000BC that introduced farming to Europe, after travelling across the Mediterranean.
23
DNA reveals that Neolithic Britons were largely descended from groups who took the Mediterranean route, either hugging the coast or hopping from island-to-island on boats before getting to good old Britain. When the researchers analysed the DNA of early British farmers, they found they most closely resembled Neolithic people from Iberia (modern Spain and Portugal). These Iberian farmers were descended from people who had journeyed across the Mediterranean.

BIG SCHOOL BLAZE
SEVERAL classrooms at the Dama de Guardamar school were destroyed by fire in the early hours of Friday morning. Pupils aged between three and eleven were forced to see out the rest of their preEaster lessons in council buildings between Monday and Wednesday. Firefighters from Almoradi, Orihuela, and Torrevieja put out the blaze which started at around 2.00 am, as a number of prefabricated rooms were raised to the ground.
The cause of the fire is believed to be an electrical fault, with the buildings erected as a temporary measure nine years ago, with a new school set to be built in the SUP-7 area of the Guardamar municipality. The project is in the Valencian government budgets for 2019, with Guardamar education councillor Pilar Gay saying that drafting work for the building in the SUP-7 area had been completed and that she hoped that a tender announcement “would be imminent soon”.

SAN JAVIER mayor José Miguel Luengo has repeated a call to replace the Canal El Estacio bridge linking the Mar Menor to La Manga, with a tunnel. Murcia president Fernando López Miras has now backed Miguel Luengo´s call, and asked San Javier council to produce some plans to replace the bridge, which was opened 16 years ago at a cost of nine million euros.

The Guardia launched an operation in February after a series of robberies were reported in Torre de la Horadada, with the thieves happy to steal from homes close by, including a number on the same street. A range of beds,
furniture, and couches were stolen to fill out the squat, along with officers discovering an array of electric appliances including washing machines, fridges, televisions, toasters, irons, coffee-makers, and DVD players, all of which have been returned to their owners. No further details were provided over the quartet, except for the fact that they are also being looked at for a series of hotel robberies.

PLANE SAILING SAN JAVIER council has been given 200 thousand euros by the Murcia government to advertise the area as a tourist destination based on its aviation connections. After January´s transfer of the regional airport to Corvera, the empty terminal building will be converted to house the 44 vintage aircraft belonging to the Fundacion Infante de Orleans, currently based in the
by Alex Trelinski Madrid area. San Javier council is also looking to create an openair aviation museum, as well continuing with the strong links to the Spanish Air Academy that´s based at the San Javier airfield, which includes the country´s answer to the Red Arows, the Patrulla Águila.
PUIG´S ROAD PLEDGE
The
Postbag Is it just a sheer coincidence but improvements always seem to get done in my area every four years ahead of the local elections? We´ve had some excellent LED street lighting put up, as well as some much-need resurfacing, which has been long overdue for the best part of a decade. On the basis of what´s happened in the last fortnight, can we have a local vote every year? Gareth Hicklin, Los Montesinos. EDITOR:- Many municipalities across Alicante Province are getting some springtime spruce-ups, but as the work signs say across the region, the projects are paid for by grants from the Alicante Provincial Council, and not local authorities trying to “buy” votes.
So we have a potential six extra months dangling on the end of the rope marked Brexit, and probably longer after that, so long as President Macron allows it. Thanks heavens at least that with the Easter holiday, we are getting a break from this non-stop Westminster pantomime, and the recess will allow the politicians to take a deep breath and think about what they are really doing. Puig in Orihuela.
by Alex Trelinski VA L E N C I A N government president Ximo Puig has promised that the CV-95 road between Orihuela and Torrevieja will be upgraded to a dual carriageway, during an election campaign visit to Orihuela City. Puig, of the Socialist PSOE party, is looking for four more years in power in the Valencian regional elections on Sunday April 28th, the same date as the national general election. The president blamed the state of finances inherited
from the previous Partido Popular administration over a lack of progress on expanding the CV95, but promised that the upgrade “would become a reality over the next four years” if he was re-elected. Other election pledges included a 100 million euro investment in a 10 year modernisation plan to improve irrigation and water quality for vegetable and fruit growers in the Vega Baja region, as well as expansion plans for Orihuela´s Vega Baja Hospital.
TAPAS TIME by Alex Trelinski LOS MONTESINOS stages its tenth Ruta de la Tapa this weekend between Friday April 19th and Sunday April 21st. Snacks and drinks will be served up at 20 locations around the town for either two euros, or two euros fifty. As in previous years, people can vote for their favourite snack, with the chance for a free meal for two at the winning outlet.
I watched the latest Open Letter from British ambassador Simon Manley on the Brits in Spain Facebook page, and I honestly wondered why he bothered, as there was nothing really new that he could say(EDITOR:-report on page 16). He just seems to spout the government line, which is so irritating. Mary O´Connor, Denia. EDITOR:- Simon Manley is a civil servant and his job is to reflect the position of the UK government bosses, or otherwise he´d be back in Britain within a few hours! Ironically, Manley finishes his tenure in the summer to be replaced by a former government Brexit department PR guy.
The Easter school holidays back home have brought out families for a break over here, with some of the behaviour leaving a lot to be desired....and I´m not talking about the children. A bar I go to had a few of them in over the weekend, and approaching midnight, some of the kids(barely aged five or six) who should have been in bed many hours earlier, were just running around inbetween some inebriated customers.. That´s not the children´s fault, but I squarely point the finger at their drunken parents who I wondered whether they were even capable of getting back to where they were staying. Am I missing something, or is old age hitting me badly? Marion Allott, Benidorm.

4 steps for a healthier you
When focusing on personal transformation, many hit the gym or focus on eating right and losing weight. Instead of taking on large, difficult-to-maintain goals, there are smaller, simpler steps and habits that can be embraced, resulting in lasting change and a healthier you.
1. Self-care isn’t selfish When too many obligations and plans with family and friends become a burden, it’s OK to take a pass. If needed, spending a night at home or retreating to the comfort of your bed can help keep unintended stress at bay. Everyone needs a break from their social life on occasion.
2. Bring on the breakfast Busy mornings might leave you feeling short on time and skipping out on breakfast altogether. Though it might feel like a huge time saver, skipping breakfast is detrimental to your day. Quick
breakfast options that you can pre- peat. pare ahead of time, like veggie egg Remaining sedentary all day muffins or overnight oats, provide can lead to several physical effects energy and nutrients, like fiber, and pains. To help steer clear of that you need to keep you and your these, set a timer and get up for a body moving all day long.
five-minute lap around the office or house every hour or so. Not only will you minimize potential aches but moving throughout the day can also make you more productive.
With these tips in mind you can be more on top of your health without making any drastic changes. For more information, visit www.preparationh.com.
3. Treat the small stuff If you feel that something is off with your body, no matter how small it may seem, acting from the start can go a long way in preventing bigger issues. Treating minor health conditions can be just as important for overall health as visiting the doctor for more serious concerns, like the flu or chronic pain. Quick relief for bum discomfort, such as itching and burning, is achievable with Preparation H Totables Irritation Relief Wipes. They deliver relief and on-the-go cleansing in a discreet, convenient travel pack - so you can easily treat symptoms and get back to your day in comfort no matter where you are.
4. Work, walk, work. Re-
Hepatitis C (The Silent Epidemic) Hepatitis C is a blood-borne virus which affects the liver. It can cause inflammation, scarring and even cirrhosis of the liver. Liver cirrhosis can increase the risk of developing liver cancer and liver failure. The incubation period can be from 2 weeks to 6 months. The problem with having Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is that you will not necessarily know you have it. The symptoms can be vague and often common to all of us. Symptoms include tiredness, insomnia, depression, skin problems, abdominal pain and digestive problems. Approximately 20%-30% of people who have contracted HCV will have
symptoms. We know 20% of people with HCV will fight the virus and clear it within the first 6 months of contracting it. Unfortunately for the remaining 80%, it will become a chronic condition. Chronic HCV infection is often asymptomatic and the virus may be present for years. Unfortunately, these people will have liver damage ranging from mild to severe. HCV is a tough resilient virus that can survive outside the body in very small droplets of blood. If in room temperature it can remain infectious from 16 hours to 4 days on surfaces. In a confined container like a syringe, it can survive up to 4 weeks.
Blood has the highest concentration of the virus thus a small trace of blood may have enough viruses in it to cause infection. Sharing intravenous drug equipment is especially high-risk behaviour. Before we all think it is only drug addicts at risk, we need to understand other areas of risk where it can be contracted.
Less common ways to have contracted HCV • Infected mother to baby before or during birth • Unprotected sexual intercourse with someone who has HCV (low risk) • Medical and dental treatment in highrisk countries where unsterile equipment may be used • Tattoo, piercings, acupuncture, electrolysis and semi-permanent make up where unsterile equipment may be used • Sharing razors, toothbrushes that may have been contaminated with blood from an HCV positive person
Who should get tested? • People who have injected illegal drugs
even if only on one occasion years ago • People who have received blood transfusions or blood products in the UK before July 1991 • People who received blood products in the UK before 1986 • People with HIV • Healthcare workers after needle stick injuries with known HCV positive blood • Patients with symptoms of liver disease e.g. abnormal liver enzyme tests • Children born to HCV positive mums The test for HCV is a blood test. Early, prompt diagnosis improves prognosis. HCV is treatable. Unfortunately, there is no vaccine to protect us against it (unlike Hepatitis B). Treatment can take from 6 months to a year. Different medications are used, some injectable and some orally. The medication encourages an immune response to fight the virus. An antiviral will also be used to stop the virus replicating. There are side effects, some people being affected and some not. Lifestyle changes have to be made and alcohol intake at least reduced, preferably stopped completely.

You know, when you switch on Netflix, planning to watch something specific, but your eyes fall on the,‘Trending Now‘ bit at the bottom. Well that happened to me twice last week and I ended up sitting on the sofa well into the wee small hours binge watching both of the series from start to finish. The first is called, ‘Special’, written and starring memoirist Ryan O’Connell as a young gay man living with cerebral palsy, the show sees his character attempting to take the reins of his life, and dealing with the way he’s viewed by those around him.
Stars In Black Summer Special
FRIday 26TH aPRIL 2019
Now that might not sound much like a ‘must watch’, but I urge you to give it a go as it’s moving, hilarious, touching, naughty and even better, you can binge the whole thing in a couple of hours. At the extreme opposite is Black Summer, which takes Zombie series to such a new level, that you actually feel like you are in the middle of the flesh eating chaos. Again, I binge watched the lot, alternatively screaming and pulling the cushion in front of my face …… It’s like The Walking Dead on streroids. Watch it!

e g r a l t i g n i v i L ’s t o D For the ‘Snooze’ Ellie Goulding appears on the album
Having already admitted to being one of the few people alive that Game of Thrones has passed by, I’ve been greatly amused by the furore that last weekend’s opening episode of the 8th and final season generated across social media. From friends issuing spoiler alerts, threatening to unfriend anyone giving the plotlines away before they got a chance to watch it, to actor Kit Harrington, following mixed reviews from fans, telling critics they can, “go f**k themselves”, the media circus has been relentless. For us non GOT fans, justas we feel it may be safe to venture back onto social media, news
emerges that an album of ‘thrones’ inspired music is about to be released …..What? Featuring appearances by A$AP Rocky, Ellie Goulding, Joey Bada$$, Lil Peep, Muse’s Matthew Bellamy, Mumford & Sons, SZA, The Weeknd, Travis Scott, The National, and Ty Dollars $ign, the album, entitled ‘For the Throne’, is apparently out next week. With lyrics like, ‘I saw the footprints in the white of the snow. I counted thousands of hours just to ride all along. 18 degrees and 80 miles from home, oh no!’, I think we know where this album is going and even the thought of it is sending me straight to sleep …….Zzzzzzzz!

Madge and Beyare back
Music fans have been in a right old tizzy this week, with news that one iconic Grand Dame of the pop scene, is set to launch the first single off her forthcoming album, whilst the other is rumoured to be about to enter the recording studio to lay down some new material. Let’s start with Madonna, fresh from confirming a million dollar appearance at next month’s Eurovision Song Contest final in Tel Aviv, where she will sing 2 numbers during the voting section. She will perform one of her mega hits and the first single from her new album Madame X, on which the sixty plus chanteuse adopts yet another new alter ego. A generation apart, but no less successful and eccentric, Beyonce, last week premiered her Netflix documentary, Homecoming, chronicling her
acclaimed performance at last year’s Coachella Festival in the States, where she became the first black musician to headline the event. Just hours before the documentary appeared on Netflix, rumours of a new album release from the singer began circulating, after the lyric website, Genius listed a new album, titled B7, under Beyoncé’s discography. Initially, there were rumours that a live-album from her Coachella performance would be released, although this remains unconfirmed, but rumours now point to an entirely new release of studio recorded music, but this too, remains just speculation as no official announcement has been made. All very intriguing ….. these divas know just how to keep us on our tiptoes don’t they.

Drop Quotes Drop Quotes are similar to cryptograms, in that the goal is for the solver to uncover a hidden quote. A blackand-white crossword-style grid is set up for each quote, with a number of letters “hovering” above each column. Your task is to “drop” each of those letters into the appropriate square in each column, until the entire quote is revealed. All punctuation (commas, periods, dashes, etc.) has been removed. Good luck!

Millions of people love their pets and spend lots of money to keep them happy and healthy. But being a pet owner also has a lot of benefits for the human half of the relationship. According to the U.S. National Institutes of Health, there are the physical boosts, like lower blood pressure, lower heart rate and lower cholesterol. Being with your pet also reduces your response to stress and helps you to recover from it faster. Having a pet benefits kids in many ways, including helping them develop empathy. A pet can give you the same emotional connection as a human friend. And studies show that the more people benefit from their pets, they closer they tend to be to other people. Dog owners of all ages are more likely to be physically active and less likely to be obese. For older people, having a dog can keep them socially connected. And that’s been shown to help people live longer, and avoid physical and mental decline. Some dogs have special training to safeguard your health,
Fido or Fluffy Can Bring You a Big Health Boost like warning you before a seizure. So how do you choose the right dog for your family? Start by thinking about your living space, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals suggests. Do you live in a house or a small apartment? Do you have a yard or live close to a dog park? Next, think about your lifestyle. If you spend a lot of time indoors, you might want a dog that also enjoys being inside with people, like a Pug. If you’re looking for an exercise companion or your family loves outdoor activities, a dog that loves being outside, like a Retriever, may be a good choice. Think also about who’ll be caring for your dog. Is that person up for long walks every day or will your dog be getting most of its exercise in your backyard? If you’ve got kids, make sure any dog you’re considering loves having kids touch and play with him or her. Also talk about kids’ role in caring for the new family member. Having a pet is a great way to instill a sense of responsibility.

La Marina Golf Society @ Font del Llop A cool and unusually windless day greeted us on our return to Font del Llop with probably a record number of members picking up awards. The Twos Pot was shared amongst no less than 6 different players, namely Alan Swanson,Noel Danaher,Bill Stobo, Alistair Quin,Lindsay Merchant and Mark Pope. Nearest the Pin prizes went to Sarah McCabe,Garry Garbett, Bill Stobo and
Mark Pope. The Silver group award went to one of the few members who ,being over the age of 70, has opted to play off the Ladies tees. The winner was Roger Honey with 39 points and he will happily be accepting a handicap cut for his success. Winner of the Gold award was Captain Bill Stobo with a monumental 41 points and ,of course , he will also be pleased to be similarly cut.
Three matches were played in the Knockout Trophy with wins for Elspeth Craig , Mick Cook and Bill Stobo. Our next game is at Alenda on 2nd May 10.00 first tee when we shall be playing a Texas Scramble for the Optica Optima Trophy. The list is on the board at the La Marina Club or contact Alan Craig on a100ac@ yahoo.co.uk.y
Seven members and one guest made up the numbers for El Plantio 2’s Joker competition. The unfortunate guest, Jason Mainwaring, ended up winning a threeway tie for second place but was not able to claim his prize due to not having membership..The other two ended up with identical scores for the eighteen holes and the back nine but Jason’s father-in-law Ray
Housley shaded the last six holes. Nearest the pins - Hole 1 Henry Mellor and Hole 8 David Swann. Third Place – Handicap 8, Henry Mellor – 35 points Second place – Handicap 10, Ray Housley – 35 points C/B. First place – Handicap.10, David Swann – 38 points... If anyone would like to
join our Society, we play at El Plantio Golf Club every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. We use both courses - the Par 3 nine hole course and the main 18 hole course, so we cater for all abilities. BACK TO BAKU
JOY OF LA VILLA
by Alex Trelinski
The fourth round of the 2019 Formula One World Championship sees a return to street circuit action this Sunday with the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on the Baku City Circuit. Lewis Hamilton returns to Baku as the defending Azerbaijan Grand Prix champion, and will be aiming for a third straight victory, with Mercedes dominating the podium this season, with Hamilton and Sebastian Bottas finishing first and second in each of the three races to date. The two-time defending Formula 1 champion Hamilton maintained the torrid pace that earned him last year’s F1 Drivers crown with a decisive victory earlier this month at the Chinese Grand Prix, outpacing Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas by over six point five seconds, and he will certainly be the man to beat in Baku.

ITALIAN SWITCH
The end of season men´s tennis event, the ATP Finals will move from London to Turin after the Italian city was named as host of the event from 2021 to 2025. Manchester, Singapore and Tokyo were also on a five-city shortlist to stage the season-ending tournament. It has been held at London’s O2 Arena since 2009 but will move to the Pala Alpitour stadium.
by Alex Trelinski
“We believe that Turin has all the ingredients to take the event to new heights,” said the ATP’s executive chairman Chris Kermode. The ATP Finals feature the world’s best eight singles players and doubles teams of the season and will boast a record prize fund of 13 million euros in 2021. Turin will be the 15th city to host the event, and will be the first in Italy, since it was first staged in 1970.
TIGER ROARS BACK
Villajoyosa CF gave themselves a big boost to book a play-off place in Preferente Group Four, as a 57th minute Botella goal gave them a one-nil win over leaders CF Intercity. It was Intercity´s third one-nil defeat in four outings, but they remain five points clear at the top, ahead of Hercules B who drew one-all away to play-off contenders CD Almoradi. Villajoyosa remain third, but a point clear of CFI Alicante, who thrashed Alicante University six-one. At the other end of the table, CD Benidorm still remain just above the drop zone after a disappointing three-two defeat at bottom side Villena
CF, who recorded only their fifth win of the season. CD Torrevieja remain second-bottom, three points behind Benidorm, after drawing four-four with Callosa, whilst Aspe UD continue to occupy the third relegation slot, after a four-nil drubbing away to UD Horadada. This weekend´s matches include CF Intercity at home to Redovan, Hercules entertaining UD Horadada, and Villajoyosa away to struggling Aspe, with CD Almoradi on the road to Elda Industrial. At the bottom, Benidorm CD go to Orihuela B, and there´s a Saturday trip for Torrevieja to Alicante University.
MILLER DRUGS HITCH Anthony Joshua’s next opponent Jarrell Miller has returned an “adverse finding” in a drug-testing sample, says Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn. American Miller is due to fight the Brit at Madison Square Garden in New York on June 1st, with Joshua defending his IBF, WBA and WBO heavyweight titles against the undefeated Miller, who has never fought for a world title.
Tiger Woods completed one of the great comebacks in sport on Sunday, and says his Masters triumph at August was “right up there” with his greatest achievements, having faced “serious doubts” he would ever contend again. since having four operations on his back. The 15-time major winner said he “could barely walk” before surgery and his children had seen golf cause “pain”. “We’re creating new memories for them and it’s just very special,” he said.
“I was very lucky to be given another chance to do something that I love to do. I had serious doubts after what transpired a couple of years ago. “I couldn’t lay down, I couldn’t do much of anything. I had the procedure which gave me a chance of having a normal life. “All of a sudden I realised
I could swing a club again. I felt if I could somehow piece this together I still had the hands to do it. The body is not the same but I still had good hands.“To have the opportunity to come back like this, you know it’s probably one of the biggest wins I’ve ever had for sure. It’s got to be right up there, with all the things I’ve battled through.”

Hearn said Joshua’s “preparations continue” for his US debut and said he had been informed by the the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (Vada) about the finding from a sample collected last month. Joshua’s manager Freddie Cunningham said they “will 100% be looking at replacement options” if Miller is not allowed to fight.

ALEX RINS SUPREME
There was no shock in Texas last Sunday when there was Spanish success in the latest MotoGP contest, namely the Grand Prix of the Americas. The rabbit out of the hat though was the name of Alex Rins from Lleida in Catalunya claiming a surprise maiden MotoGP victory, as fellow-countryman and hot favourite, Marc Marquez

crashed out when he was in control of the race. Marquez, aiming for his seventh win in a row in Austin, was leading by almost four seconds when he lost control of his Honda on the ninth lap. The Spaniard was unable to continue and Rins edged out Valentino Rossi to win by 0.462 seconds.
Overall championship leader Andrea Dovizioso finished fourth. Italy’s Rossi is second in the standings, three points behind leader Dovizioso, and Rins is third with 49 points. “I beat Valentino, this is unbelievable for me. He was my idol when I was very young,” Rins, 23, said. The next race is the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday May 5th at Jerez.
Billy Vunipola has been given a “formal warning” by the Rugby Football Union after the England player defended Australian player, Israel Folau’s social media post claiming “hell awaits” gay people. The 26-year-old number eight liked the bigoted post by Folau and called

for people to “live their lives how God intended”, and was booed by some supporters when he came on for Saracens during their defeat last weekend at Bristol. Vunipola, who has also been warned by his club Saracens, has been “reminded
of his responsibilities” by the RFU. During a meeting, the RFU said Vunipola had “expressed genuine regret”. “The warning will be retained on his disciplinary record for a period of five years and may be taken into account in future disciplinary proceedings,” the RFU said in a state-
ment. Vunipola said he had not intended to “cause suffering”, and that his intention was to “express my belief in the word of God.” Rugby Australia took swift action against Israel Folau by terminating his contract for a “high-level” breach of contact.

roar forced a change in the La Liga plan, but now Spanish Soccer Federation president, Luis Rubiales says playing in the Middle East is one of the options being considered for the Super Cup, as well as a new “final
four” format featuring the top finishers in La Liga and the Copa del Rey. The competition has been played in a one-game final between the champions at the beginning of the season, with the idea being to play the new Super Cup in January.
The proposal will be made during the federation’s general assembly next week. Rubiales did not confirm reports the deal will be worth 30 million euros a year for six seasons, saying “it will be difficult” to reach that value.

CAPITAL´S BIG RACE The Premier League fixture list has thrown up some two big clashes this weekend affecting the top and bottom, and none more dramatic than Sunday´s match in South Wales as Cardiff City welcome leaders Liverpool, or an instant Champions League reunion at the Etihad between Manchester City and Tottenham. With four matches remaining, Cardiff are still alive in their battle against relegation, thanks to a Tuesday night win at Brighton, who appear to
be falling apart, and go to Wolves on Saturday.. Neil Warnock´s side though have it all to do as they are still two points behind the Seagulls, with four matches remaining, plus they´ve played an extra game, which continues to be the same scenario for Klopp´s Liverpool in their top-of-thetable scrap with Manchester City.. It´s tough stuff for City, with the quick Spurs rematch this Saturday lunchtime, and
then that match in hand over Liverpool, which just happens to be a visit next Wednesday night to Old Trafford! Two wins for City would put them back in the driving seat, whilst there´s a battle royal for a Champions League slot, with just a point separating the London trio of Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea, with Barcelonabeaten Manchester United, two points off the pace, and needing a Sunday win at Everton, who themselves are smarting from a shock defeat at relegated Fulham.
has been placed in the opposite side of the draw to O’Sullivan, meaning the two can only meet in the final. Mark Selby, whose only ranking tournament success
this season was the China Championship, is perhaps O’Sullivan’s most likely opponent but also faces competition from the likes of Mark Allen and Judd Trump.

GREEN BAIZE TIME
The 17-day feast of snooker that is the 2019 World Championships at Sheffield´s Crucible Theatre gets underway this Saturday, with Welshman, Mark Williams looking to defend his crown. Unsurprisingly, Ronnie O´Sullivan heads to the Crucible as the World No.1 and favourite for victory. But the likes of Judd Trump, Neil Robertson and defending champion Williams will all be keen to stop him in his tracks. ‘The Rocket’ heads the world rankings, but is handed the number two seeding behind Williams whose victory last year hands him the privilege of being top seed. Robertson, who won the China Open earlier this month, is the fourth seed but fortunately
