ONE of the United Kingdom’s biggest and best known sporting goods retailers is set to open its third outlet in Alicante it was announced last week. JD Sports plans to open its doors in the Alzamora shopping centre in Alcoy by the end of August, joining the existing branches in Alicante and Elche. There are also two other stores in the Valencia Community, in Castellon and Valencia, and more than 50 across Spain. JD Sports has become the European leader in the sportswear sector (trainers and tracksuits etc.) since it opened its first branch in 1981. Last year it turned a profit of just under €400 million, a 15% increase in 2017.
The elusive otter is back AFTER fears that the otter population may have left Elche’s Hondo Natural Park a specimen was caught on infra-red cameras one-night last week. Notoriously shy animals, none had been spotted for two years and it was feared they

had been driven out altogether. The area has also seen an invasion of Cyprinus Carpio, a species of carp not native to the waters. Plans have been put in place to control
the carp population, including the reintroduction of otters which help control their numbers. Hopefully, this latest sighting means that the animals have returned to a place where they used to live in large numbers.

Explicit video led to suicide

A man has handed himself into police in Madrid following the death of a young mother of two who killed herself after an explicit video featuring her began circulating among work colleagues. The 32-year-old worked in a car factory in Madrid and killed herself last Saturday within days of finding out about the film. She was married with two children and told a friend she was terrified about her husband finding out about the film which she had made when she was much younger. A family member has said that her husband did find out about it, the day before the woman took her own life.

Colleagues at the factory, which employs 2,500 people, expressed their grief in a special gathering convened at the workplace in memory of the deceased. Andoni Andean, president of the Spanish Foundation for Suicide Prevention, said that the power of social media to damage lives was underestimated and people should always think before posting or sharing. Management at the factory had said they were aware of the film being circulated but considered it a personal not workplace matter and took no actions.
However, an employment lawyer has said it should be treated as a workplace accident and that the company could be held criminally accountable. Teasing and comments from co-workers were also putting the woman under severe stress and should have been dealt with. The man who handed himself in was believed to be the individual who circulated it at work, but not who first posted it on the internet, which is thought to be an ex-partner of the victim. He has been released while a judge decides whether to file charges against him or anyone else involved in the incident.

THE IMPORTANCE OF MAKING SURE YOUR FINANCES ARE TAX EFFICIENT In this article, I am going to illustrate the importance of making sure your finances are best positioned for tax here in Spain and highlight the real benefits of holding investments in a Spanish Compliant product. I am going to compare the Spanish income tax position, for a Spanish tax resident, between a tax compliant policy and a non-compliant policy So what is a Spanish Compliant Policy? Well firstly, don’t be confused by it being titled ‘Spanish’, it is sometimes presumed that this means the investments are held in Spain or have an investment focus on Spain. This is not the case, A Spanish Compliant Bond is a tax compliant policy which has to meet a number of technical conditions. For example, the funds available for selection must be EU UCITS fund. A UCITS fund is a collective investment scheme established and authorised under a harmonised EU legal framework, allowing investors to access cross border investments, which all have to fall under the UCITS product rules.
In addition, a Spanish Compliant policy provider must appoint a fiscal representative in Spain with responsibility for reporting on and the payment of personal income tax on savings income as I will explain later in the article. One of the main benefits of investing in a tax compliant policy is that the growth in the policy is not taxable until the policy is surrendered or when a withdrawal takes place, even if you make changes to the investments. So it is not until money is taken from the policy and again is realised that the policyholder will incur a liability to income tax. The process is then simplified further with basic tax calculated and sent to the Hacienda on behalf of the client. The income tax authorities in Spain have specifically exempted owners of compliant policies from disclosing the policy on their Modelo 720 declaration of overseas assets, another great feature of the policy. So how does this compare to a noncompliant policy? Well to start with, the non-compliantpolicy does not provide
the same tax deferral benefits, instead, the policyholder must declare the annual growth in their policy and pay income tax at the respective rate, even if there have been no withdrawals from the policy. Non-compliant policies must be also be disclosed on the Modelo 720. The taxation of savings income in Spain Savings income is currently taxable at the rates shown below. A Spanish Compliant policy will deduct 19% tax from the total gain which the fiscal representative will then pay to the tax authorities. If the policyholder receives savings income in excess of €6,000 in the tax year, they must pay the additional tax due, 2% on savings income up to €50,000 and a further 2% on the savings income over €50,000. Comparing the tax position of the two policy types The following example compares the position between a non-compliant policy and a tax compliant policy for
the tax years 2016, 2017 and 2018. It is presumed the investor has no other savings income taxable in Spain. The non-compliant policy €150,000 was invested into a noncompliant policy and the investor has no other savings income. The policyholder must declare each year the growth as savings income and pay tax on the total amount. The tax compliant policy €150,000 was invested into a compliant policy. Until such time as withdrawals are taken or the policy is surrendered, no tax is payable on the growth in the policy. However, if the policyholder was to withdraw the growth each year the tax payable would be as follows. This clearly illustrates that on the same investment over a three year period, if you were to withdraw the growth year on year, the investments held within the non compliant policy, would have a tax liability of €6,670 over this 3 year period, however on the tax compliant version, the tax liability would only be €842, this is a difference

Last year beaches across the Valencian Community were closed on several occasions after sightings of the creatures. While often referred to as deadly, in the overwhelming amount of cases the man o’ war will just cause severe
irritation and pain, also sometimes quite severe. Of course they should be best avoided if you do see one, even if they are washed up on the beach. You should also report sightings to the duty lifeguard or the local police if there is no lifeguard.

THE mayor of Alicante and other Partido Popular officials have been criticised after attending a paella contest rather then a memorial service for the 300 plus victims killed at the cities main market during a bombing raid in the Spanish Civil War. The event had already been pushed back by a week due to the local elections and many feel that the right wing PP would rather it did not go ahead

at all, being a stark reminder of the atrocities carried out during the war by Falangists who have strong links to the early days of the PP. The bombings took place on 25 May 1938 by Italian fascist planes but, it is believed, with the full approval of General Franco as the city was one of the last Republican strongholds.
Many women and children were among the dead and thousands were injured, with people who were present on the day recalling the horrors during the memorial. Flowers were laid out at the end of the ceremony, held at the main entrance to the market, while some people shouted out “where’s the mayor?”. The answer to that was at the Alicante City of Rice competition in nearby Plaza del Ayuntamiento.

British tourist dies in Hotel balcony fall by Andy Mansell
A little over two years on from the tragic death of newlywed Kirsty Maxwell, another British tourist, on a stag weekend, has lost his life after falling fifteen floors from a Benidorm apartment balcony. News of the death emerged on Benidorm social media pages, earlier this week, although the exact circumstances of the incident remain unclear and no police report has been issued. A 71-year-old Danish man who was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his ex-wife before going on the run has been arrested in Calpe’s luxury boat racing club. Named as Leonardus Lei Beaumont the sentence was passed by a Belgian

A MAN has been given a jail sentence and hefty fine for a YouTube video where he humiliated a homeless man in Barcelona, by giving him an Oreo biscuit filled with toothpaste. Kan-Hua Ren, known as ReSet, was found guilty by a Barcelona court of an offence against moral integrity in his video that was posted over two years ago on his YouTube channel and has since been removed. Ren, who was 19 at the time, videoed himself removing cream from inside some Oreo biscuits and replacing it with
toothpaste, which he then gave to a Romanian beggar along with a 20 euro note. He was sentenced to 15 months in jail, which he will not serve as he is a first-time offender, and was also ordered to pay 20 thousand euros in compensation to the man, who threw up after eating the unpleasant Oreo. “Maybe I went a little far, but let’s look at the positive side, it will help him clean

UNINSURED CONSEQUENCES A BRITISH tourist, who suffered serious injuries in an accident on the Costa del Sol last month, has been left stranded at a Malaga hospital because he didn´t take out any travel insurance. Haydn Atwood´s family will have to shell out up to 30 thousand euros to bring him home to Wales in an air ambulance and have been told by British consular officials that they cannot help financially. Atwood was with his girlfriend and son when he tripped and fell into the

path of an oncoming car. His 17-year-old son was forced to watch his father being thrown into the air before paramedics fought to save his life at the roadside. Haydn is now in Malaga´s Hospital Clinico Universitario, where he requires operations and suffers from memory loss. After being resuscitated, Haydn was left with internal bleeding and was put on life support for five days.
Himalayas claim more victims
LAST week the “Weekender” reported on the high death rate on Mount Everest this climbing season, and since then another eight climbers in the region are feared to have perished, including four Britons. Indian air force spotter planes confirmed the presence of five bodies on Nanda Devi, the countries second highest mountain and a notoriously difficult ascent. Unlike Everest, which due to ladders and other aids can now be tackled by relatively inexperienced climbers, Nanda Devi is only suitable for very experienced climbers. “Those who tackle Everest wouldn’t even be able to place a foot on it,”

said one mountaineer. While the missing group are all top-level climbers, it is believed that they were caught by an avalanche, something that pays no heed to the experience of those in its path. Searchers have assumed, though not confirmed, that the bodies were part of the stricken group and have described the chances of the three people still missing being found alive as almost non-existent. Eleven climbers have died on Mount Everest in the last few weeks, many freezing to death as they queued in the “death zone” to reach the summit.

REMAINS ON HOLD THE SUPREME COURT has suspended this Monday´s planned exhumation of the remains of dictator General Francisco Franco from a state mausoleum, pending the result of appeals by his family. The plan to move the remains away from the Valley of the Fallen site, decided in March by the PSOE Socialist government, has divided opinion in a country still conflicted over the dictatorship that ended with Franco’s death in 1975. The Socialists have

long sought to turn the Valley of the Fallen just outside Madrid, seen by many as a monument to fascism, into a memorial to victims of the 193639 civil war in which around half a million people died. The court said that its decision was meant to avoid Franco’s remains being be moved before appeals against the exhumation were examined in full. The plan was for Franco’s remains to be reburied next to his wife in a family tomb.

Laying toxic substances in public spaces is a criminal offence and carries a penalty of up to four years in jail and a fine of between €6,000 and €18,000.

A TORREVIEJA restaurant will fly the flag for the Costa Blanca in the Netherlands this month, as it won a Valencian contest for creating the region´s best tapa. The Rincón de Capis on Calle San Gabriel, just around the corner from Torrevieja´s salt museum, saw off over 60 challengers to earn a place at the World Tapas Day event at The Hague on Thursday, June 27th, which is being run by Valencian tourist chiefs. A professional jury gave the award in the eight-strong final to a creation from Rincón chef, José Luis Cases. The dish was a combination of fish along with seafood-seasoned rice and artichoke. His speciality showed the elements that the restaurant has built up a reputation for over the last 20 years, using a mixture of local Vega Baja produce and flair in presentation.

The Bay Leaf Tandoori restaurant became an almost instant success since it opened its doors two years ago in Albir. Head chef, Sekhar Kharel and Tandoori chef ,Gaurav Puri are the proud owners and they were happy to welcome old and new customers to recently enjoy their second anniversary party in true Bollywood style. The Bay Leaf not only serves up the best Indian and
Nepali cuisine in Albir, but the special celebration night offered guests the chance to join in with some Bollywood dancing! Upon arrival we were greeted by the friendly staff, as new and regular diners came to enjoy the experience of the Bay Leaf, with fun already underway as we sat down to see the decorated tables and a choice of poppadoms with dips. I love a cold beer with my curry and so it was perfect to settle in with the cold sensations against the spicy heat of the dips. The beer is served in frozen glasses that makes it last longer at the ice-cold temperature. Now with the warmer months ahead, the Bay Leaf is ideal, to not only enjoy the ice-cold beer with a quality curry, but also to enjoy the large outside-seated terrace area. This Bollywood adventure started with the dancers presenting themselves in traditional dress, as three went outside and the three performed inside for the opening dance. During this time, we were served a mixed starter of Onion Bhaji and Vegetable Pakora, served with a salad garnish and presented along with a three sauce selection - with the mint sauce displayed as a bay leaf to give that added touch of class! Our main course was Chicken Tikka Masala, featuring tender tandoori chicken pieces in a thick tomato and cream sauce. The other main was a traditional Himalayan
recipe called Lazies, which can be either lamb or chicken which is cooked in a thick spicy sauce with a creamy texture .
This dish is made from a secret recipe that has been devised thanks to the extensive culinary knowledge and experience of the Nepali head chef. Whilst we enjoyed the amazing tastes of Nepal, we also experienced the dancing and traditional Indian music that got a few of the customers up on their feet to join in with the professionals, who made it fun and entertaining for everyone. Javea U3A May Ball a glittering success!
Javea U3A’s big annual May Ball – this year dubbed the Glitter Ball – prove to be a huge success, not only for members and guests but for charity too! More than 150 people attended the ball at Salones Carrasco in Javea and helped raise over €900 for the association’s nominated charity of the year, Help of Denia and Marina Alta. The evening began with a cava reception in the sunshine outside, followed by a slapup meal and dancing to the excellent Black Glitter band. Special thanks go to the organisers, particularly Helen and David Whybrow and their team of helpers including Lorraine Allin, Jacqui Rogerson, Barry and Margaret Elsden, Linda Coughlin, Julie Robson and Krystyna Stefanczyk. Thanks also to Mike Oxley-Brown, who organised the printing, and those members who helped sell tombola tickets. The tombola was also a big success,

Over 40 members made their way to the Pad Thai restaurant in Javea for a tremendous evening. Over welcome drinks, conversations were had, and new friendships made. Benidorm: Pride of the ‘Big Apple’
In a major coup for Benidorm’s LGBT community, a delegation will head to New York later this month to represent the resort at the biggest Pride event of the year. The prestigious World Pride event, which began in 2000, as a celebration of international LGBT solidarity and moves country each year, is considered to be the biggest festival on the community’s calendar. This year, in celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Stonewall riots, widely recognised as the birth of the Gay liberation movement, World Pride will take place in New

Last year, an estimated 20,000 people, mostly gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transsexuals, visited Benidorm to participate in the various programmed

Benidorm National Police officers have arrested the remaining suspect wanted for the robbery of a café in the resort, during early April, in which the protagonists wore clown masks and fired a taser gun at employees. The three suspects entered the premises in the Rincon de Loix area of the resort, during the afternoon of April 7th, wearing clown masks to cover their faces and gloves to avoid fingerprints. When confronted by employees of the café, one of the alleged perpetrators drew a “Táser” type electric weapon, before delivering several electric shocks to their bodies. However, the members of staff were able to overcome and detain one of the thieves until

police officers arrived at the scene. After viewing security camera footage of the robbery and interviewing witnesses to the incident, the officers were able to identify and arrest one of the thieves a few days later. Last Tuesday, police sources confirmed the arrest of the remaining thief, who was detained in the early hours of the previous morning. The three suspects, later appeared before the Benidorm court where they were detained without bail.

Make A Wish charity Rastro in Albir - 9th June
The organisers of a November charity event which aims to raise money towards making dreams come true for terminally ill children are holding a fundraising Rastro in Albir this weekend. The Rastro, which takes place between 12.00h and 18.00h on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th June at the Bar Los Musicos, in Carrer Joaquin Rodrigo 10, Albir, is in aid of the Make A Wish Foundation, a worldwide charity which grants wishes to children between the ages of 3 and 18, who suffer from lifethreatening illnesses. You just need to acquire a little knowledge of the chemicals you are using so you can use them safely. By following our 3 point guide below you will gather all the information you need for opening your pool.

Chlorine compounds may provide organic or inorganic chlorine.
Organic chlorine is trichlorisocyanuric acid (for weekly chlorination) and dichlorisocyanuric acid (dissolves rapidly and is suitable for small pools). Inorganic chlorine is calcium hypochlorite (for daily and shock chlorination) and sodium hypochlorite (liquid). When a pool is dosed with either organic or inorganic chlorine it is free chlorine that attacks bacteria and contaminants. As the chlorine acts it is converted into combined chlorine. Combined chlorine (also known as chloramines) is ineffective, smells of chlorine and may cause irritation of the eyes and mucous membranes. To reduce the combined chlorine, the pool is shock chlorinated with calcium hypochlorite. The high chlorine content that forms temporarily on shock chlorination disappears quite quickly in an outdoor pool, but can also be lowered with chlorine reduction compounds. Chlorine is continuously consumed in the pool, and different factors determine the chlorine consumption, including bathing frequency, water temperature, sunlight and pool size. A test kit is used to measure the chlorine content. Most kits measure free chlorine, but to measure the combined chlorine you need to measure total chlorine. Total chlorine is the sum of free and combined chlorine. If organic chlorine (weekly chlorination) is used, cyanuric acid accumulates in the pool. Where the cyanuric acid content is above 100 ppm (mg/l), chlorine blocking may occur, making the chlorine ineffective. Cyanuric acid can be removed by adding water from the mains supply. Cyanuric acid acts as a chlorine stabilizer, preventing the sunlight from breaking down the chlorine, for example. It is therefore advisable for outdoor pools to have a cyanuric acid level of 30-50 ppm (mg/l). Kuala Lumpur by Yvonne Hollywood, Worldwide Horizons Kuala Lumpur is the capital city of Malaysia, a country in Southeast Asia. The country shares a land border with Thailand and Maritime borders with Singapore, Vietnam and Indonesia, Brunei and the Philippines. Many of these neighbouring countries influences in food and culture can also be found in KL, which, with a population, a little under 2 million people, is the largest city in the country. As with many of the Asian capital cities, KL is ultra modern, with a skyline dotted by high rise buildings, the most famous of which are the Petronas Towers, the tallest twin towers in the world. The towers are 88 floors high and connected by a glass walkway, available by prior booking for visits for those who have a good head for heights. The towers also had a starring role in the film Entrapment, featuring Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta Jones, filmed there in in the 1990s.
The Petronas Towers are located in the area called KLCC (Kuala Lumpur City Centre), which along with the areas of Bukit Bintang and Chinatown, are known as KLĚ s Golden Triangle. Inside this area, you will find night markets, street food, uptown shopping centres (such as at the foot of the Towers) and tourist gift wares readily available. Leaving the shopping behind, you can also visit the Petrosains science exhibition, an interactive museum dedicated to the history
of hydrocarbons. The exhibition is regularly updated by Petronas, the Malaysian oil company, who also display their F1 racing cars here. For the marine life lovers, visit Aquaria KLCC, holding over 150 species of marine life in just under a half a million square meters. After such a visit, you can take some time out in the beautifully landscaped Lake Gardens, located around Lake Perdana. Here you can walk around the Orchid Garden, Hibiscus Garden, Bird Park and Butterfly House. Make sure you give yourself enough time to enjoy – on Sundays, there are free guided walking tours to give you the full history of these Botanical gardens.
With some time on your hands, make sure you visit the Batu Caves, a limestone hill with a series of caves and temples. Behind a stunning golden statue, you must climb some steep steps to gain entrance into this temple, but the interior and the views are well worth the effort. Most hotels have details on booking this day trip. Rock climbing and abseiling are also locally offered from adventure companies. As a city break, Kuala Lumpur has everything to offer, whilst also being in a great location to use as a stop-off to other destinations nearby. For stunning beaches and chill-out locations, take a direct flight to Langkawi. In both places, accommodation is plentiful and for every budget.

Is this the best beach on the Costa Del Sol? The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plane, and mainly before you take off from your chosen airport here in the U.K. There’s a very, very good reason why the Andalusian coastline has been such a magnet for British tourists for so long. During the summertime, this is one of Europe’s warmest corners, with many spots boasting well over 300 days of sunshine per year. The water is clear, the villages in the foothills remarkably unspoilt in comparison with the larger coastal towns such as Benidorm, and you’re only a couple of short hours away from home- so there’s no jetlag, or even fatigue once you land. For the best sunbathing on the Costa Del Sol, though, you have to look a little further from the most famous (and therefore busiest beaches), and to the Los Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo natural area. A protected micro-region that stretches some 1814 hectares, it sits sandwiched by Malaga and Granada, comprising stunning secret coves, beautiful beaches, and
dramatic cliffs, fringed by forests and serene foothills. Driving through this landscape is nothing short of spectacular, and, providing you have decent air con (temperatures around here can easily top 35C during peak season), nothing short of a true pleasure, not least once you pass the town of Nerja. Due east from here, roughly 13KM, you’ll reach a sign for El Canuelo, a somewhat unknown but utterly unmissable cove that is just a few minutes from the N-340 highway. Many factors have been combining over the last year or so to make it the perfect time to buy a Spanish property for either your retirement or a holiday home. Over half a million properties changed hands in Spain last year. This was the first time the milestone was reached since the financial crisis. PROPERTY TAXES IN SPAIN

When buying or selling a home in Spain, there is the taxman wanting his cut, but the position is relatively straight-forward over what people have to pay. How much, of course, is a different matter! If you buy a property in the country, there are essentially two taxes that you have to pay, namely:IVA(Spain´s equivalent of VAT). This has to be paid by anyone who buys a newly built home in Spain. In general, a home is regarded as new when it is sold directly by the property developer, with some exceptions such as when the property has been rented. The amount of IVA will be calculated as 10 per cent of the
sale value, the final closing price, as it appears in the title deed. 2. ITP (Property Transfer Tax). The ITP is applied to properties to which IVA, which basically comes into play when you buy a second-hand home, or when after the construction or rehabilitation of the property, a person other than the developer sells the property. The ITP is be paid in the Autonomous Community in which the property is located, like Valencia or Murcia. The percentage to be applied to the final price varies by region, as well as your personal tax situation.
This is a tax that must be paid on January 1st each year, and is paid to your local Town Hall. The figure to be paid is calculated based on the cadastral value of the property, which means the percentage the amount of tax you have to pay will be different depending on the place where the property is located and your personal circumstances. IRPF (Personal Income Tax). When a person who is not a tax resident in Spain is the owner of a home there, they must also pay their taxes by submitting the corresponding forms individually or through a property manager or other representative.
If you are selling a property in Spain, then there is once crucial tax that you need to be across:Plusvalía (Capital Gains Tax). When a property is sold, there is an obligation to pay the “Plusvalía” for the increase in the value of the property. It is a tax that will be paid to the local authorities by the person who sells a property. This tax has some controversy surrounding it because there have been cases where it has been levied despite the owner making a loss on the sale.

Wild boar in Spain
The wild boar is the ancestor of the domestic pig. It is common throughout the Iberian Peninsula, except in the arid southeast, where it is relatively rare, though I have seen their tracks in the desert landscape of Cabo de Gata, the driest corner of continental Europe. The absence of water is a limiting factor. This is because all pigs lack sweat glands and cool themselves by wallowing in mud. They are absent from the Balearics and the Canaries. Except in the wolf areas of Northern Spain, the wild boar has no natural predators in Spain, and is in clear expansion, as a result of the abandonment of the countryside and recovery of the forest. This is despite game hunting of some 60,000100,000 animals a year. In some areas (eg much of Catalonia) boars have become a serioius agricultural and the hunting season is frequently brought forward to try (often in vain) to put a check on them. Boars also come into conflict with ‘man’ in peri-urban areas, such as on the outskirts of Barcelona where over-familiarisation with humans can bring people dangerously close to what is a wild animal, particularly when this is a sow with young. Boars are increasingly attracted to urban edges, lured by easy pickings among rubbish containers and gardens as they lose

Walk around any Iberian forest or health and you’ll see the larges patches of bare earth scuffed up by boars. They are basically beneficial to woodland ecology, as they root up and overturn earth creating seedbeds in search of worms and grubs and whatnot. Such areas can be colonised by annuals so attracting insects and these bringing birds, and so on up the food chain. There are, however, losers too:

Much has been written regarding the return of the fun, frothy, bikini-fest dating show Love Island, but the darker side of life after the cameras stop rolling is never far away. As the latest season of the show gets underway, with its usual cast of wannabees, news emerged that another one of its previous contestants committed suicide, unable to cope with life after the show. Mike Thalassitis died by suicide, an inquest heard on Wednesday morning. Thalassitis was found dead in March at the age of 26, with the inquest taking place more than two months later, at North London Coroner’s Court. Coroner Andrew Walker concluded that Thalassitis took his own life, after consuming a mixture of alcohol and cocaine. Mike’s death – as well as that of fellow Love Island star Sophie Gradon, who a coroner also ruled, had taken her own life – led to a widespread debate about the support offered by the ITV2 reality series after those involved leave the show. This discussion brought about a number of

Six shows into their latest comeback tour and The Spice Girls are still getting faint praise and a good deal of moans and groans from their devoted fans who have flooded social media sites to air their grievances. Sports & Local News Montgo Golf Society 31st May Report Today 31stMay we played a Magic 3 fun competition our sponsor was Celia Cronin. The winner with the Magic 3 touch was Simon Fox with 39 points, beaten on countbackinto 2nd was George Braddick with 39 points and 3rd was Glenys Cuming with 38 points. We had separate Ladies &Men’s nearest the pins with the 2nd shot on the 5th Hole, the men’s winner was Tom Atkinson unfortunately none of the Ladies hit the green with their 2nd shot therefore we had a card draw which was won by Julia Hall. We also had separate Ladies &Men’s NTP’s on the par 3 11th, the Ladies winner was Sally Burrowes however the men failed to hit the green in 1 so another card draw was made, Nigel Siddall was the lucky winner.
We had a singles Knockout match between John Feek & Russ Peters which was won by John 6 & 5. Following the recent course maintenance at Oliva Nova the greens are now starting to improve although it will be a least a couple of weeks yet until they return to normal. Next week is the 3 Clubs & a Putter competition which will be sponsored by John Day.
Just 11 members played a singles Stableford game at the Oliva Nova course on Monday the 3rd June 2019. On another beautiful morning for playing golf with the temperature about the 28C mark and the course recovering well from the recent tining of the greens. Just two prizes today due to the low attendance and it was the day of the two Allan’s. Today in 1st place it was Allan McManus with a whopping 40 points off a 28 handicap. This win takes Allan into first place in the Player of the year table with a six point lead and with only two games to go. Can the players in second and third place catch up and overtake Allan. Watch this space because they will be trying hard to do so. Now my bet is on!.
In second place was Alan Tissington with a nearly whopping 39 points off a 22 handicap. NTP. Again just two winners, John Roscoe on hole 5 in two shots while David Downes did likewise in two on hole 18. There was one two’s today, Peter Gardiner on hole 16. The Marina Alta Golf Society is a small but friendly group of players who play every Monday at the Oliva Nova course with first Tee time being about 10.40. If you want to join this friendly group of golfers as a guest then a warm welcome will be waiting for you. More Great Racing for SAMM With strong winds forecast from lunchtime onwards on May 26th, the Race Officer, John Down, decided to change the day’s format and run a 60 minute race and a 75 minute race back to back. With some of the regulars away there was a chance for some new talent to shine among the 13 competitors, sailing 8 boats. Due to much improved sailing during this series with most boats getting good starts, everybody was warned that the officials would be watching out for boats ‘jumping the gun’. However, after this praise, in a very light wind, the start of the first race was a disaster and it took more than 11 minutes for everybody to cross the line. The race was very strung out and slow and the wind only lifted slowly during the last laps.
mention should be made of Julian on his Topaz, who was out on his trapeze, and Norman on his Laser, both trying to keep their boats level in the gusts, also the Sailfish crews who had some new members and first time racers aboard. It was also great to see Tug and Kerry, aboard the Omega, flying around the course lapping boats on numerous occasions. However the good winds meant all the boats performed well and this was reflected in the results with Mistral first, 2 seconds ahead of Rosita, herself 4 seconds ahead of the Radial. A special thank you was given to all the volunteers who make sure the racing a success by taking the entries, manning the support boat, to the ‘Timing Team’ ladies who check the stop watches and record the lap times.

Johanna Konta is playing “better tennis than anybody” and can win her maiden Grand Slam title at the French Open, says 1976 champion Sue Barker. The British number one, 28, meets Czech teenager Marketa Vondrousova in a last-four match pushed back to today(Friday) by bad weather in Paris. No British woman has reached the Roland Garros final since Barker won her only Grand Slam in Paris 43 years ago. “Jo is playing the best tennis I have ever seen her play,” Barker said. American great Billie Jean King agreed with Barker, saying Konta was now a better player than she was when she reached the 2017 Wimbledon semi-finals. Konta would become the first British slam finalist since Virginia Wade went on to win Wimbledon in 1977.

Eddie Hearn announced on Tuesday that a rematch with United States-born Mexican Ruiz, part of the contract for Saturday’s fight, would take place in the UK in November or December. “I am the one who went in there to perform and my performance did not go to plan. ENGLANDS WORLD QUEST The Women’s World Cup 2019 starts in France tonight, with the final taking place on Sunday July 7th. The competition will be held across nine cities, with the semi-final and final being played in Lyon. There are 24 teams playing in the competition and they are split into six groups. The teams play everyone in their group before heading to the knock-out phase.
