NEW-LOOK beach bars are being rolled out across the Orihuela Costa by franchise holder Chiringuitos del Sol. After the contractual paralysis last year which saw Orihuela council not opening up the popular bars until late into the summer season, Orihuela´s beaches councillor, Luisa Boné launched the improved facilities, along with Chiringuitos del Sol boss, Thomas Herteux. The chiringuitos have a distinctive blue and white design with an Orihuela Costa logo, and have already been installed in six

A young woman died instantly, when a transfer bus carrying newly arrived holidaymakers, ploughed into her on a busy corner of a Benidorm old town street earlier this week. The victim, described as a Portuguese national aged between 25 and 30, had been walking with a friend, when the driver of a transfer coach, with bold livery saying, NICE2MEETYOU, appeared to lose control while travelling downhill in busy, Calle Ruzafa in the heart of the resort. The incident occurred at the
central point where pedestrians cross from Avenida Emilio Ortuno into Plaza de La Creu, an area known locally as the Benidorm Walking Street at around 22.30h last Wednesday evening. FRIday 24TH May 2019 the UK, enjoying an evening stroll at one of the busiest times of the day in Benidorm, were drawn to area, as the scene of the collision descended into chaos. Pedestrians ran up to unaware drivers who were becoming increasingly impatient, blaring their horns in a rapidly forming queue behind the bus, pleading for them to move aside to allow ambulances and police vehicles to pass. Meanwhile, the driver of the bus, unable to speak, sat alone on the pavement in a state of extreme shock, as his equally distressed passengers remained in their seats, or stood up in the aisle, unsure of what course of action to take. As curious onlookers milled around the body, local police officers arrived on the scene by foot, followed a few minutes later by an ambulance crew and National Police vehicles.
Paramedics administered CPR to the body, while police cordoned off the vicinity of the accident, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The exact cause of the accident and reasons for the brake failure, remain unclear, as investigating officers scan CCTV footage from nearby cameras and wait to interview the driver who was too distraught to give his account of events immediately afterwards. Meanwhile, the bus passengers were transferred to another vehicle to continue their onward journeys to their holiday accommodations. The area remained cordoned off to allow technicians time to assess the damage to the shop front and balcony above. Trained councillors were made available by Benidorm City Hall, to support relatives of the victim and witnesses to the accident.

TWO BRITISH men have been found not guilty of kidnapping a waitress outside a night club in the Costa del Sol resort of Puerto Banus in September 2014. A Malaga court ruled that Latvian waitress Agnese Klavina had not been forced into Westley Capper’s car, and also cleared fellow defendant, Craig Porter, of Agnese’s Missing Agnese. illegal detention. THE ongoing inquest into the London Bridge terror attack in 2017 this week heard how the Spanish victim in the atrocity was killed. Ignacio Echevierra, aged 39, had been skateboarding with a friend when they saw the attack while cycling home across the bridge. The friend, Guillermo Sanchez, said that Ignacio immediately ran at the attackers who were stabbing two other victims. He used his skateboard as a weapon but was overcome by the terrorists and dies of
stab wounds. Talking about his friend Mr Sanchez said he was “all about trying to help people” and was still carrying a toy he had bought earlier for his little sister back in Spain. Last October Mr Echevierra’s parents received the posthumous George Medal for bravery from the Queen that was awarded to their son. His parents have chosen not to attend the inquest saying they have “complete Ignacio Echevierra faith in the English justice system”. A total of eight people either stabbed or men who carried out died in the attack, run over by the three the atrocity.

A WOMAN who lived on the Costa del Sol, but plundered almost 88 thousand pounds in UK benefits, has be ordered to pay back the money, but at just £7.65 per month, in addition to getting a suspended 12 month prison sentence. Jayne Kitching, 53, will need to stay alive for another 958 and a half years to repay the money, in a payment plan agreed with the DWP, In Grimsby Crown Court, the mother of two admitted cheating the public revenue between July 2013 and August 2016. She obtained income support, disability living allowance and carer’s allowance having failed to tell authorities she had moved to Spain, with her postings on Facebook drawing attention that she had left the UK. Kitching also admitted taking tax credit from HMRC between September 2013 and April 2017 and failing to failing to let agencies in the UK know that her children had been taken into care in Spain, though they were returned to her custody two years ago. The judge imposed the lenient sentence in the hope that she would not lose custody of her children again, one of whom she has to act for as a full-time carer.

The unnamed 43-year-old said that the blaze had got out of hand after he lit a small fire to burn rubbish. High winds and the dry ground helped fan the flames, which led to the mobilisation of three helicopters near Nerja in a hilly area known as Cerro de San Isidro.

THE driver of a car which had been clocked doing 185 kmph (115 mph) in Valencia City early last week before crashing in spectacular fashion has died in hospital 48 hours after the incident. He was seen tearing down Gran

However, as the world shrinks and tourists look for something different from sun, sea and sangria, Japan is seeing a year on year in-crease in foreign visitors - and not all the locals like it. The famous dunes in Tottori which are at-tracting increasing numbers of tourists illustrate this well. The breath-taking sand mountains stretch for almost 20 kilometres along the coast and undulate dramatically, reaching heights of up to 50 meters. However, there is an increasing problem with “sand graffiti”, basically people carving out messages, pictures and whatever takes their fancy, defacing the formerly pristine dunes.

SHERPA Kami Rita completed his 24th ascent of Mount Everest on Tuesday, a new record and, in-credibly, his second trip to the summit in just a week. 49-year-old Rita has been working as a guide for 25 years and is vocal in letting people know the importance of Sherpa’s role in helping less experienced - or even highly experienced - climbers achieve their dreams. He told the BBC “Sherpas fix ropes all the way to the top, so they make their way fixing the ropes and the foreigners give
interviews saying Everest is easier, or talk about their courage. But they forget the contribution of the Sherpa. We have struggled a lot to make it happen. MAY´S LAST STAND
Prime Minister Theresa May could resign later today, after a hostile reaction to her fourth attempt to bring back the EU Withdrawal Bill, which would include votes on a customs union and a second referendum. After a tense Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, May gave a speech which outlined her plans, and then repeated the details to MPs on Wednesday. A lot of her MPs either sat in stony silence, or just didn´t bother to go to listen in the first place, with hours later the Leader of the House Commons, Andrea Leadsom, resigning her post, saying that she did not agree with the changes over the customs union and referendum.

The executive of the 1922 Committee of Conservative backbenchers voted on Wednesday night on whether to allow a new confidence vote that could oust Theresa May from her premiership. The only certainties are that the UK is due to leave the European Union on October 31st, and that currently the House of Commons has failed to agree on anything, except for the fact that they don´t want to leave the EU without a deal. It´s hard to see how a new Prime Minister can change the parliamentary arithmetic, with an early general election a distinct possibility, whilst Theresa May´s last stand spectacularly blew up in her face within a matter of hours, leading to the almost certain end of her tenure of Downing Street.

Spanish Inheritance Tax! If you are a Spanish Tax resident or deemed a Spanish Tax Resident, or are non-resident but own property or assets in Spain, your spouse/beneficiary could be liable to Spanish Inheritance Tax upon your death. This tax is known in Spain as Impuesto

by Yvonne Hollywood, Worldwide Horizons Found in the Pacific Ocean, Hawaii is an archipelago of volcanic islands which make up the 50th State of America. The main islands are on the Southern most tip, the largest being Hawaii itself, (also known
as the Big Island or Hawaii Island, to differentiate from the State of Hawaii). The capital of the state is Honolulu, located on O’ahu. Its location in the Pacific is ideal
Hawaii for beach and surf tourism, attracting millions of persons every year. The islands have a tropical climate, averaging 30 degrees in winter and higher in the summer, with a wet season from October to April and summer May to September, making it an ideal island destination when the hurricane season is taking place in the Caribbean. The tourism industry is one of the main sources of income for the islands, and you can expect to pay a tourist tax. Getting there is a short 6 hour flight from Los Angeles To Maui or Honolulu, but once there, its relatively easy to get from island to island. If you have always wanted to learn how to, there is nowhere better to learn how to surf – professional trainers provide lessons and equipment in most of the main beaches. The islands are also attractive for their abundance of nature reserves – the islands boast 21 natural parks with plenty of guided tours available, including one of the ‘Devastation Trail’, which follows the
path of the lava following the last volcanic eruption, allowing you to get a real feel for the damage that was caused. Wildlife and sea life is in abundance around the islands. There are many diving and snorkeling areas which allow you to see the fantastic underworld habitat. Covered by reefs, the area is home to an array of tropical fish, turtles, parrotfish and the very beautiful, but equally very hard to pronounce humuhumunukunukuāpua´a. Try saying that after a few drinks! If you prefer not to get your hair wet, there are two fantastic aquariums to visit, offering you the possibility of experiencing all the underwater world whilst in dry clothes. Between November and May, the North Pacific Humpback Whales start their annual migration. This can generally be seen from any of the islands, so grab a hat, suncream and book yourself a boat tour to catch sight of these magnificent mammals. Hawaii is rich in customs and folklore, expressed in traditional nights that tourists can participate in. Called a Laua, these nights consist of a traditional feast, accompanied by chanting, singing and storytelling. Traditional crafts such as basket weaving are taught, all accompanied by some exotic cocktails. Hawaii is also known for more recent history, the bombing of Pearl Harbour in Honolulu. Today, there is a memorial center and modern museum, bringing to life the events of December 7, 1941, and that provoked America to officially enter World War II. There are many different tours of the memorial, so
ensure that you check what is included, especially how much time you will be there. If this is not where you are staying, a tour to Pearl Island usually offers some time in downtown Honolulu too, giving you the opportunity to explore this stretch of coastline, including the world famous Waikiki beach, one of the most recognised beaches in the world. Staying in Honolulu itself lets you wander this stretch of the beach, with its designer shops, stunning hotels and, when you need to rehydrate, plenty of bars and cocktail lounges to help you to refresh! If you decide to visit any of Hawaii´s islands, read up on the Dos and Don’ts before you go. Hawaii thrives on its tourism therefore it does everything possible to maintain its infrastructure. This includes a tight control on what substances can and cań t enter, so check if your packet of nuts, seeds or piece of fruit is permissible when arriving at the airport, as the state imposes harsh fines. And, although it shouldn´t need to be said – Don’t Litter! Hawaii does not tolerate litter. Neither is it a great fan of smoking, having banned it on many public beaches. Make sure you find the designated area before you light up. And lastly, Don´t! touch the lava. Yes, it can look pretty and mesmerizing, but touching lava can end up with some devastating consequences. Stick to these (basic!) rules, and enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime destination.
GO FOR A GOLFING HOME
You don´t necessarily have to be a golfer to buy property at a golfing resort, as there are plenty of sensible reasons to look at the option of having a home at one. A golf resort is always impeccably kept and well maintained. The areas around the courses are equally well maintained, with manicured gardens, hedge rows and verges. Roads and street lighting are also kept in tip top shape, all important factors when it comes to buying and selling a property. Golf courses are renowned for being located in privileged positions with spectacular views, like those of mountains, the sea, a river, and the well-kept golfing

fairways. The areas around a golf resort are usually ideal for a long stroll or a jog. Also the air is clean and fresh as here not being much traffic around,. You also have the golf clubhouse, which is usually a place for great socialising and networking, with generally good food and drink standards. Being close to nature is considered to be a great health benefit, as well as pleasing to the eye. A golf course is normally surrounded
by an abundance of flora and fauna, with hundreds of varieties of trees, plants, shrubs and flowers. Whilst golf resorts are generally quiet and do not attract any cause for alarm, developments are usually patrolled at night to ensure no trespassing or vandalism occurs. This means that a patrol car is usually nearby, giving you extra peace of mind. Each golf resort is completely different, but with plenty to go at in the Costa Blanca and Murcia regions, and of course further afield, it´s a property option that is well worth investigating.

The average house price there is now around £800,000 with estate agents saying that the massive rise is a matter of simple supply and demand while the “bored with Brexit” hous-ing bounce is also a factor as people
return to the market rather than wait until Brexit is resolved. A coastal location in the UK is far from a guarantee of high prices and while places like Sandbanks, Brighton and Padstow (Cornwall) will set you back half a million quid or so, for a family house in the likes of Clacton, Redcar and many Scottish towns they are a quarter of that.
WHAT THE BRITISH THINK
According to a new survey, over half (55 per cent) of Brits considering buying property in Spain aren’t worried about Brexit affecting their future, and still plan to pursue a deal. This is backed up by the fact that more than two fifths (41 per cent of people planning a purchase are either at the serious planning stage, ready to buy, or in the midst of the buying process. Some people still have worries about buying in Spain, however. For instance, a third (33 per cent) are delaying their move over concerns about getting affordable healthcare in the country. Other reasons for a delay include the complex Spanish legal process (30 per cent), being able to maintain a property in the UK (32 per cent), and the current weak pound (20 per cent). The findings come from a survey of 1,500 Brits planning on acquiring property in Spain, which was carried out by advice website Property Guides. The questions spanned a range of topics, each delivering an insight into the hopes, fears, and plans of those considering investing one of the UK’s favourite expat destinations.
For those looking for Spanish property, the most popular regions remain the Costa Blanca (42 per cent) and the Costa del Sol (38 per cent), which have attracted Brits
for decades. However, it seems some traditionally popular areas are in decline, with the Balearics (8 per cent), the Costa Brava (14 per cent), and the Canary Islands (13 per cent) attracting less interest than up and comers like Valencia (17 per cent) and Almeria (31 per cent). When quizzed over what type
of property they were looking to buy, respondents revealed that more than a third (35 per cent) are looking to invest in a villa, while almost a quarter (24 per cent) are looking to buy an apartment. Townhouses (18 per cent) and farmhouses (14 per cent were also fairly popular choices. Chris Nye, senior editor at Property Guides said: “It’s quite
easy to see that, in spite of Brexit, British people remain determined to pursue their dream move to Spain. Even faced with the uncertainties around the process, such as the strength of the pound and healthcare access, many have an unshakeable confidence that they will still be able to enjoy a high standard of life.” “Simply put, the lure of the
beautiful weather and a healthy retirement offered by Spain is too strong to be dampened by Brexit concerns, especially among retirees. Motoring If the Karoq looks distinctly familiar, that’s no surprise given that this is the Skoda version of the SEAT Ateca. With the popular Yeti, a car loved by owners, now gone, Skoda is effectively replacing it with two models - the Karoq and the smaller Kamiq. Of course there’s no shortage of crossovers this size and the Karoq is competing in a very crowded market. So what makes it stand out? Well we wouldn’t say it’s the most distinctive of designs. It’s neat rather than daring but Skoda does offer a Sportline model which looks the part with vRSstyle sports bumpers and bigger wheels. But what the Karoq does offer is plenty of space. The boot is huge at 588 litres - that’s more than a BMW 5 Series Touring and the wide opening and low load lip make it easy to load things like pushchairs in the back. You can also get a double-sided boot mat as a £50 extra which we’d say is a sound investment. Skoda’s ‘simply clever’ features make the Karoq easy to live with too, the ice scraper in the fuel filler cap being one of our favourites, along with a useful hook system in

the boot that means you can bags of shopping. It’s perhaps the quality and feel of the interior which makes the Karoq a level above much of the competition. You can easily stick an Audi badge on the steering wheel and it wouldn’t be out of place. Compared to the Qashqai or Sportage, the Skoda feels far more modern and even the Ateca feels a
little dated when you compare the two. Driving the Karoq is a familiar Skoda experience. And that’s a big positive. It’s undemanding and relaxing to drive with a solid gearchange on manual cars and little noise on the move, even at motorway speeds. It’s not especially exciting but it handles well nevertheless with
good feel from the nicely weighted steering. While there’s no shortage of choice if you’re after a family crossover, the Karoq manages to stand out. It feels a quality vehicle, the interior is excellent and it’s good to drive too. Top models are pricey but the Karoq
competes well with rivals like the Peugeot 3008 on price and standard specification. If you’re buying a crossover - definitely check out the Karoq before making a decision.

BRIDGE STALLED WORK on renovating the historic bridge in Rojales along with the weir and water wheel has been suspended due to an extra 100 thousand euros needed to be spent on buying extra granite. Rojales mayor Antonio Pérez has terminated a 659 thousand euro contract with contractor Aitana, who according to the Informacion newspaper, are willing to finish off the work, but not with the specific material that is only available from one supplier. The project was aimed to restore the historic site, but now everything has been left in limbo, with no work going on for a number of weeks. Local residents have been left frustrated with the various road diversions imposed at a key thoroughfare in Rojales, amidst claims that local businesses are losing trade. Rojales culture councillor Inmacaluda Chazarra Pérez said that work should have been finished on April 22nd, and that the authority were looking to solve the problem through legal channels.
BUZZING SQUATTERS by Alex Trelinski A GRANADA household has got to the bottom of why a buzzing noise was keeping them awake at night for the last two years. Bee-keeper Sergio Guerrero discovered that 80 thousand bees were nestled inside the couple´s bedroom wall, after Granada council in the Andalucia region advised them to call in an the expert. Despite the buzzing, and theories that the noise was coming from an electrical source, it wasn´t until recently that the home owners decided to get close to the wall and then heard the sound of the bees. The young lady driving the car admitted it was her fault, but had taken additional insurance so it seemed like there was no problem. Goldcar will now not accept liability as no form was submitted as I did not have a form in my car. What is it? Haemochromatosis is an inherited condition in which iron levels in the body build up slowly over many years. This build-up of iron, which is known as iron overload, can cause unpleasant symptoms. If it isn’t treated, this can damage parts of the body such as the liver, joints, pancreas and heart. Haemochromatosis most often affects people of white northern European background and is particularly common in countries where lots of people have a Celtic background, such as Ireland, Scotland and Wales. It’s not clear exactly why this is. Complications If the condition is diagnosed and treated early on, haemochromatosis doesn’t affect life expectancy and is unlikely to result in serious problems. But if it’s not found until it’s more advanced, the high iron levels can damage parts of the body. This can lead to potentially serious complications, such as: Liver problems – including scarring of the liver (cirrhosis) or liver cancer Diabetes – where the level of sugar in the blood becomes too high Arthritis – pain and swelling in the joints Heart failure – where the heart is unable to pump blood around the body properly.

The most eagerly anticipated movie release of this year for me is Once Upon a Time In Hollywood, due out in the Autumn. Directed by Quentin Tarantino, the movie is set in 1969 and revolves around Leonardo Di Caprio and Brad Pitt, who play two stuntmen buddies earning a living on the big screen. The official movie trailer, whets the appetite nicely and the lead actors appear to genuinely get on well with each other. Touchingly, Pitt and Di Caprio, in a recent Esquire interview spoke of how they both got butterflies on set, as they caught sight of the late Luke Perry, whose performance in the film was the last before his untimely death. “’Oh my God, that’s Luke Perry over there!’” Di Caprio told the interviewer, with Pitt quipping, “‘We were like kids in the candy shop because I remember going to the studios and [Beverly Hills,90210] was going on and he was that icon of coolness for us as teenagers.’” It’s nice to know Hollywood A Lister’s get starstruck too …… Can’t wait for the movie boys.

Madonna waffled on about music uniting people, sung on autocue, then walked off with her million US
dollars. A few Palestinian flags were waved in a half hearted show of solidarity. The UK finished last and the singer blamed Brexit, claiming even Elton John couldn’t have scored any higher. The fact that Holland triumphed 44 years after their last win in 1975, gives countries such as Spain, France and the UK hope that a win may be just around the corner ….. standby Elton John. Unfortunately, the 2 member team found the pressures of having their Stableford scores counting on every hole too much and finished well behind the teams of 3, who staged a very close finish with two points

Hola! Welcome to this week’s Las Ramblas golf report. On Monday we played the ever popular ‘change partners’. With a winning score of 84 points (and beating my team by just one shot) were Trevor Piggybank (sorry Pulleyblank), Mike Chapman, Annemarie Weisheit and FriedelKnebel. Annual maintenance work on the greens meant that Wednesday’s Stableford was played over the back 9 holes twice. Arguably the tougher half of the course this resulted in those of us who play off the yellow tees having slightly more of a disadvantage than normal. Notwithstanding, an excellent score of 38
points saw Olga Douglas take the top spot and she was followed by Terry Cullen with 35. In third and fourth places, separated only by countback, were Tom Hardie and RegAkehurst both with 33 points. Only the one ‘2’ today which went to Nigel Price. Friday saw us compete in a best two to score on each hole and all on the par 5’s. This time round it was the 1st nine holes twice. A great round from my good friend and guest Phil Reeve who notched up 38 points but our winners with 99 points were Geoff Biggerstaff, Ron Phipps, RegAkehurst and Annemarie Weisheit. Defending singles champions Rafa Nadal and Simona Halep are strongly fancied to retain their titles, when the French Open, the second major of the year, starts on the clay of Roland Garros in Paris this Sunday. Nadal will go for his 12th French Open title and 18th Grand Slam in total, and is hot favourite to retain the French crown, despite struggling on his favourite surface this year until winning last Sunday’s Italian Open, where he beat
world number one until January, when Japan´s Naomi Osaka took over. The recent surprise package is Britain´s Johanna Konta, who with no past form on clay and having endured a slump over the last 18 months, reached the Italian final on Sunday before losing to Karolina Pliskova, having made it to another clay final the previous weekend. Konta´s form will now see her seeded for Paris.

Hamilton will be focused on a better qualifying result on the streets of Monaco, where grid-position is everything. If there is a race where Mercedes’ one-two run might end then it’s Monaco, as Bottas has never made the podium, and the longer-wheel base of their car is a big disadvantage around Monaco´s tight streets.
