HEARTLESS FRAUDSTERS

A TORREVIEJA couple who left an 83-year-old disabled woman with just 28 euros in her bank account, as well skipping rental payments on a property, have been arrested by the Guardia Civil. A 43-year-old Spaniard and a 42-year-old Polish woman were detained, after the Guardia discovered that defrauding their landlord was only the tip of the iceberg. The property owner filed a complaint after the couple had quit her rental home, owing several months of rent.

by Simon Russell

She also brought in a number of items that they had left behind, including a bank book that did not match their name, but that of an 83-yearold woman. The only person that had easy access to the lady´s house was the Polish woman, who was employed as a carer and cleaner. She and her partner took the bank book and used it themselves, with the elderly lady not noticing that it

was missing, as due to her disability, she rarely left her home. Guardia officers took her to the bank, where she discovered that she only had 28 euros left in her account, with a total of 12-and-a-half thousand euros being stolen, and her utilities like water and electricity about to be cut off for non-payment. The Guardia stepped in to make sure that her services continued as normal by contacting the supply companies.

The Polish caregiver admitted to making withdrawals from the bank book on a regular basis since June 2018, with the account getting a monthly pension of 656 euros, which was the woman´s sole income. The uncaring duo have been charged with theft and bank fraud, whilst the Spaniard was also charged with breaking a restraining order. Both were granted bail after appearing before a Torrevieja judge.

ONE of the United Kingdom’s biggest and best known sporting goods retailers is set to open its third outlet in Alicante it was announced last week. JD Sports plans to open its doors in the Alzamora shopping centre in Alcoy by the end of August, joining the existing branches in Alicante and Elche. There are also two other stores in the Valencia Community, in Castellon and Valencia, and more than 50 across Spain. JD Sports has become the European leader in the sportswear sector (trainers and tracksuits etc.) since it opened its first branch in 1981. Last year it turned a profit of just under €400 million, a 15% increase in 2017.

the carp population, including the reintroduction of otters which help control their numbers. Hopefully, this latest sighting means that the animals have returned to a place where they used to live in large numbers.

Explicit video led to suicide

The factory where the victim worked.

A man has handed himself into police in Madrid following the death of a young mother of two who killed herself after an explicit video featuring her began circulating among work colleagues. The 32-year-old worked in a car factory in Madrid and killed herself last Saturday within days of finding out about the film. She was married with two children and told a friend she was terrified about her husband finding out about the film which she had made when she was much younger. A family member has said that her husband did find out about it, the day before the woman took her own life.

by Simon Russell

Colleagues at the factory, which employs 2,500 people, expressed their grief in a special gathering convened at the workplace in memory of the deceased. Andoni Andean, president of the Spanish Foundation for Suicide Prevention, said that the power of social media to damage lives was underestimated and people should always think before posting or sharing. Management at the factory had said they were aware of the film being circulated but considered it a personal not workplace matter and took no actions.

However, an employment lawyer has said it should be treated as a workplace accident and that the company could be held criminally accountable. Teasing and comments from co-workers were also putting the woman under severe stress and should have been dealt with. The man who handed himself in was believed to be the individual who circulated it at work, but not who first posted it on the internet, which is thought to be an ex-partner of the victim. He has been released while a judge decides whether to file charges against him or anyone else involved in the incident.

Finance Feature provided by...

THE IMPORTANCE OF MAKING SURE YOUR FINANCES ARE TAX EFFICIENT In this article, I am going to illustrate the importance of making sure your finances are best positioned for tax here in Spain and highlight the real benefits of holding investments in a Spanish Compliant product. I am going to compare the Spanish income tax position, for a Spanish tax resident, between a tax compliant policy and a non-compliant policy So what is a Spanish Compliant Policy? Well firstly, don’t be confused by it being titled ‘Spanish’, it is sometimes presumed that this means the investments are held in Spain or have an investment focus on Spain. This is not the case, A Spanish Compliant Bond is a tax compliant policy which has to meet a number of technical conditions. For example, the funds available for selection must be EU UCITS fund. A UCITS fund is a collective investment scheme established and authorised under a harmonised EU legal framework, allowing investors to access cross border investments, which all have to fall under the UCITS product rules.

In addition, a Spanish Compliant policy provider must appoint a fiscal representative in Spain with responsibility for reporting on and the payment of personal income tax on savings income as I will explain later in the article. One of the main benefits of investing in a tax compliant policy is that the growth in the policy is not taxable until the policy is surrendered or when a withdrawal takes place, even if you make changes to the investments. So it is not until money is taken from the policy and again is realised that the policyholder will incur a liability to income tax. The process is then simplified further with basic tax calculated and sent to the Hacienda on behalf of the client. The income tax authorities in Spain have specifically exempted owners of compliant policies from disclosing the policy on their Modelo 720 declaration of overseas assets, another great feature of the policy. So how does this compare to a noncompliant policy? Well to start with, the non-compliantpolicy does not provide

the same tax deferral benefits, instead, the policyholder must declare the annual growth in their policy and pay income tax at the respective rate, even if there have been no withdrawals from the policy. Non-compliant policies must be also be disclosed on the Modelo 720. The taxation of savings income in Spain Savings income is currently taxable at the rates shown below. A Spanish Compliant policy will deduct 19% tax from the total gain which the fiscal representative will then pay to the tax authorities. If the policyholder receives savings income in excess of €6,000 in the tax year, they must pay the additional tax due, 2% on savings income up to €50,000 and a further 2% on the savings income over €50,000. Comparing the tax position of the two policy types The following example compares the position between a non-compliant policy and a tax compliant policy for

the tax years 2016, 2017 and 2018. It is presumed the investor has no other savings income taxable in Spain. The non-compliant policy €150,000 was invested into a noncompliant policy and the investor has no other savings income. The policyholder must declare each year the growth as savings income and pay tax on the total amount. The tax compliant policy €150,000 was invested into a compliant policy. Until such time as withdrawals are taken or the policy is surrendered, no tax is payable on the growth in the policy. However, if the policyholder was to withdraw the growth each year the tax payable would be as follows. This clearly illustrates that on the same investment over a three year period, if you were to withdraw the growth year on year, the investments held within the non compliant policy, would have a tax liability of €6,670 over this 3 year period, however on the tax compliant version, the tax liability would only be €842, this is a difference

CANCER RESPITE

A DRUG which keeps metastatic breast cancer in check and provides almost two-and-a-half years of grace before resistance sets in has been developed in Spain and has been on sale since last month. Until now, women with breast cancer with positive hormone receptors which had spread were given a hormonal treatment which kept the cancer controlled for around a year, after which the tumour would become immune to it. But 400 Spanish

women with an HERpositive strain of breast cancer which had come back and spread have been taking Abemaciclib, along with the standard hormonal treatment, via clinical trials, and are responding well, according to researchers. Now available as a pill and branded as Verzenio, the medication stops cancer progressing for an average of just over 28 months.

The channel is actually the convergence of two different water sources and, while it seems to originate from the construction sites, it is not entirely clear that they are to blame. too tall. Some say that the site has been discharging water for a year and this is the cause of the channel. Not holding back with their criticism, in a statement the ACEC said “the constant greedy construction on the beach front, often of dubious legality, shows that contempt for the law has

become normal in Calp”. Whatever the origin or make up of the water, it is generally agreed that the best advice for the moment is for you and your children to avoid paddling in the channels. Thankfully Calpe still has one of the longest stretches of beach on the Costa Blanca so there is plenty of space for everyone.

Last year beaches across the Valencian Community were closed on several occasions after sightings of the creatures. While often referred to as deadly, in the overwhelming amount of cases the man o’ war will just cause severe

irritation and pain, also sometimes quite severe. Of course they should be best avoided if you do see one, even if they are washed up on the beach. You should also report sightings to the duty lifeguard or the local police if there is no lifeguard.

Mayor opts for paella rather than bombing commemoration THE mayor of Alicante and other Partido Popular officials have been criticised after attending a paella contest rather then a memorial service for the 300 plus victims killed at the cities main market during a bombing raid in the Spanish Civil War. The event had already been pushed back by a week due to the local elections and many feel that the right wing PP would rather it did not go ahead at all, being a stark reminder of the atrocities carried out during the war by Falangists who have strong links to the early days of the PP. The bombings took place on 25 May 1938 by Italian fascist planes but, it is believed, with the full approval of General Franco as the city was one of the last Republican strongholds. Many

by Simon Russell

women and children were among the dead and thousands were injured, with people who were present on the day recalling the horrors during the memorial. Flowers were laid out at the end of the ceremony, held at the main entrance to the market, while some people shouted out “where’s the mayor?”. The answer to that was at the Alicante City of Rice competition in nearby Plaza del Ayuntamiento.

Totally stoned THE NATIONAL POLICE have seized nearly a tonne of cocaine, which was found hidden inside fake stones. Eleven people have been arrested after a raid at a warehouse in the Madrid area.

by Simon Russell

The investigation began more than a year ago when detectives noted meetings between known drug traffickers, some of whom had contacts

with a company dedicated to the stone business. Officers tracked a shipment coming from Ecuador with 12 containers of stones, with an approximate gross weight of 188 thousand kgs. After passing through Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, the vessel arrived at Barcelona and was moved to Zaragoza, later arriving at the Madrid warehouse.

Beach masseurs arrested Around twenty-five, police officers swooped onto the beaches of Benidorm last week in a coordinated clampdown on illegal beach traders. During the late morning raid on the Levante and Poniente beaches, the officers detained seven people of Chinese nationality, who were offering massage services to sunbathers. Authorities in Benidorm have become concerned, following a huge increase in the number of vendors using the beach to sell food and

pre-mixed cocktails, often prepared in makeshift, unhygienic surroundings, such as garages or toilets. In addition, they also hope to stop unqualified masseurs plying their trade to unsuspecting sunbathing holidaymakers on the beaches of the resort. The swoop was part of a season-long clampdown by National and local police forces in Benidorm to prevent theft and

robbery occurring on the crowded beaches of the resort. Last week’s operation, specifically aimed at untrained masseurs, resulted in the arrest of two women and five men, all Chinese nationals, all charged with infringements of Spain’s immigration laws. Following their transfer to Benidorm police station, the seven detainees were released pending an expulsion file decision by Alicante Provincial court. Acting city councillor responsible for citizen security, Lorenzo

Martinez, said that this operation, “is the result of coordinated work between our Local Police and the Police Station of the National Police of Benidorm.” “Our aim is to control and eradicate illegal activities on our beaches, especially those that can damage the health of people such as performing massages by people without accreditation or proper training, which can sometimes cause very serious health problems to the people who receive them.” Seven beach masseurs were arrested

TAKING THE BISCUIT

A MAN has been given a jail sentence and hefty fine for a YouTube video where he humiliated a homeless man in Barcelona, by giving him an Oreo biscuit filled with toothpaste. Kan-Hua Ren, known as ReSet, was found guilty by a Barcelona court of an offence against moral integrity in his video that was posted over two years ago on his YouTube channel and has since been removed. Ren, who was 19 at the time, videoed himself removing cream from inside some Oreo biscuits and replacing it with

toothpaste, which he then gave to a Romanian beggar along with a 20 euro note. He was sentenced to 15 months in jail, which he will not serve as he is a first-time offender, and was also ordered to pay 20 thousand euros in compensation to the man, who threw up after eating the unpleasant Oreo. “Maybe I went a little far, but let’s look at the positive side, it will help him clean

his teeth, I don’t think he has often brushed his teeth since he became poor,” Ren told his followers, according to a court document.

The Barcelona court also ordered Ren to take down his YouTube channel, which features him targetting other vulnerable people, and which bizarrely has over a million followers.

British tourist dies in Hotel balcony fall

by Andy Mansell

A little over two years on from the tragic death of newlywed Kirsty Maxwell, another British tourist, on a stag weekend, has lost his life after falling fifteen floors from a Benidorm apartment balcony. News of the death emerged on Benidorm social media pages, earlier this week, although the exact circumstances of the incident remain unclear and no police report has been issued. A post on the BenidormLoversfacebook page claims the victim, Colin Mcgarry, aged fortyeight, from North Belfast, died in the early hours of Sunday morning, just over 24 hours after arriving in the resort with friends, on a stag weekend. Quoting an unnamed friend of the victim, (the name is known to the author), the report states that Mr Mcgarry, who was ‘drunk’, went ‘crazy’, before ‘jumping’ from the balcony, fifteen floors to his

death. The victim had arrived in Benidorm last Friday 31st May around 23.00h, with eleven friends from a Belfast pub. The group were staying at the Torre Gerona Apartments, in Calle Gerona, situated in the

resorts Rincon de Loix area, close to the famous ‘English Square’. The devastated group left Benidorm last Tuesday evening as planned, while Mr Mcgarry’s family arrange the repatriation of his body once a Post-Mortem has been completed.

A BRITISH tourist, who suffered serious injuries in an accident on the Costa del Sol last month, has been left stranded at a Malaga hospital because he didn´t take out any travel insurance. Haydn Atwood´s family will have to shell out up to 30 thousand euros to bring him home to Wales in an air ambulance and have been told by British consular officials that they cannot help financially.

by Alex Trelinski

Atwood was with his girlfriend and son when he tripped and fell into the path of an oncoming car. His 17-year-old son was forced to watch his father being thrown into the air before paramedics fought to save his life at the roadside. Haydn is now in Malaga´s Hospital Clinico Universitario, where he requires operations and suffers from mem-

ory loss. After being resuscitated, Haydn was left with internal bleeding and was put on life support for five days.

LAST week the “Weekender” reported on the high death rate on Mount Everest this climbing season, and since then another eight climbers in the region are feared to have perished, including four Britons. Indian air force spotter planes confirmed the presence of five bodies on Nanda Devi, the countries second highest mountain and a notoriously difficult ascent. Unlike Everest, which due to ladders and

other aids can now be tackled by relatively inexperienced climbers, Nanda Devi is only suitable for very experienced climbers. “Those who tackle Everest wouldn’t even be able to place a foot on it,” said one mountaineer. While the missing group are all top-level climbers, it is believed that they were caught by an avalanche, something that pays no

heed to the experience of those in its path. Searchers have assumed, though not confirmed, that the bodies were part of the stricken group and have described the chances of the three people still missing being found alive as almost non-existent. Eleven climbers have died on Mount Everest in the last few weeks, many freezing to death as they queued in the “death zone” to reach the summit.

REMAINS ON HOLD THE SUPREME COURT has suspended this Monday´s planned exhumation of the remains of dictator General Francisco Franco from a state mausoleum, pending the result of appeals by his family. The plan to move the remains away from the Valley of the Fallen site, decided in March by the PSOE Socialist government, has divided opinion in a country still conflicted over the dictatorship that ended with Franco’s death in 1975. The Socialists have

by Alex Trelinski

long sought to turn the Valley of the Fallen just outside Madrid, seen by many as a monument to fascism, into a memorial to victims of the 193639 civil war in which around half a million people died. The court said that its decision was meant to avoid Franco’s remains being be moved before appeals against the exhumation were examined in full. The plan was for Franco’s remains to be reburied next to his wife in a family tomb.

Rat poison warning for pet owners

LOCAL Police in Alicante have told pet owners to be vigilant after a number of animal poisoning cases have been reported in the city. Several wild birds, as well as a dog, have died from what seems to be rat poison deliberately laid down, concealed in food. The areas in question are Bari San Nicholas, Parque Avenidas, Calle Olleria and Plaza Pio XII although people

should be careful across the city. The public are also warned against handling discarded food on the streets without gloves and keeping an eye on small children. Laying toxic substances in public spaces is a criminal offence and carries a penalty of up to four years in jail and a fine of between €6,000 and €18,000.

PLENTY OF PINK

THE ANNUAL “Walk for Life” organised by cancer charity fundraisers, Maria and the Pink Ladies, took place in Playa Flamenca last Sunday morning. The tenth staging of the event once again saw money raised from the five kilometre walk going to the AECC cancer charity. After the walk, everybody got some much needed rest on the Playa Flamenca promenade, and were treated to an array of local entertainers giving their services free of charge in a show hosted by Stevie Spit. The final sum raised will be announced later this month.

RICHARD´S AWARD by Alex Trelinski THE QUEEN´S birthday honours list is published tomorrow morning, but it was a throw-back to the New Year announcement for a local man recently, as charity volunteer, Richard Garland, picked up his MBE. Yorkshire-born Richard was presented with the medal by the UK Ambassador to Spain, Simon Manley, at a ceremony in Alicante. Richard has worked for the Help Vega Association for over 25 years, and is currently the organisation´s Charity Secretary.

The

I suppose it is always good to prepare, but I could not believe the hysteria in some of the Spanish media over Saturday´s “invasion” of English football fans in Madrid for the Champions League final. Crazy estimates of up to 100 thousand supporters and the “hooligan” threat popped up in some Spanish papers, yet bar an expected tiny handful of arrests, nothing really happened. We even got extra cops rolling around my drinking haunts in Benidorm, but it was all good-natured stuff between the rival fans. As somebody with no direct interest in either Spurs or Liverpool winning, I was more concerned about the quality of the actual football, which was awful, as we got a pretty bog-standard Premier League clash played in a warmer climate. Not taking anything away from the teams in getting to the final(and the semi-finals were great), but give me a match where you have two representatives from two different counties taking each other on. Carl Barton, Benidorm. I thought that bank charges had been curbed by the government a couple of months ago, but nothing seems to have changed with my account. My bank seems to be determined to continue to charge for anything they can, including using their own ATM machines. Talk about daylight robbery, where you just need to add a man in a mask to shout “stand and deliver!”.

VARIETY FOR ALL by Alex Trelinski THE Cardenal Belluga Theatre Group have started rehearsals for their September show, Reach for the Stars. The production hits the stage of the San Fulgencio theatre between September 26th and 28th, with the performers currently putting things together for this family show at the cultural centre in La Marina. Big production numbers are planned, including a rousing opening routine danced by the CB tappers in this new show directed by Katie Dell. Local charities will benefit from the proceeds with ticket details to be announced shortly.

Maria Lewis, Torrevieja. EDITOR:- You need to shop around Maria. My own bank didn´t tell me that I could get a “charge-free” account until a friend told me about it, and so I went in and switched and saved a couple of hundred euros a year. It seems simple to me, that if Donald Trump wants Boris Johnson, then Britain needs anybody else but! Max Blanchard, Quesada.

NO DEAL “LUNACY” Britain’s biggest manufacturing organisation has described the prospect of the UK leaving the EU without a deal as “economic lunacy” amid a slump in business investment intentions. Multiple candidates to replace Theresa May as Conservative party leader and prime minister have said they would push for Brexit on October 31st, whether or not a deal has been agreed – against the warnings of every major business lobby group as well as the trade unions. Stephen Phipson, the chief executive of Make UK,

by Alex Trelinski

which represents 20 thousand British manufacturers, said it would be “the height of economic lunacy to take the UK out of the EU with no deal in place”. A survey of 344 Make UK members found that a balance of only six per cent of manufacturers had increased investment in the second quarter of the year, the lowest level since the final quarter of 2016, in the aftermath of the EU referendum in June. Phipson said the manufacturing sector, which

accounts for about 10 per cent of the UK economy, was on a “clear weakening trend, which, if it continues, would push some elements of the industry over the edge before too long”. He said: “Earlier this year there was clear evidence that industry was on steroids as companies stockpiled. Underneath, however, there is now growing evidence of European companies abandoning UK supply chains, while Asian customers baulk at the unknown of what may exist as the UK leaves trade agreements which operate under EU rules.”

Head north to find work THE ten Spanish cities with the lowest unemployment rates in Spain are located in just three regions, Cataluña, Madrid and the Basque Country, according to the latest figures. Sant Cugat del Valles (Cataluña) has the lowest per capita rate at 6.2%, swapping places with

by Simon Russell

Pozuelo (Madrid) from the last list. Barcelona has the lowest rate of the major cities, just outside the top ten with 9.6% unemployment. 126 cities were analysed in the survey and only 13 had unemployment rates below 10%. Raymond Torres from

Funcas which published the figures said that, maybe surprisingly, high rent and property prices is one of the best indicators of high employment. This is down to the fact that this drives up housing prices due to increased demand and in turn, generates more income for the city.

Lowest wages in Marina Alta A survey by the INE (the National Statistics Institute) on wages in towns has put Calpe near the bottom of the national list with an average salary of €7,277, the 17th lowest across Spain. This is the smallest figure in the Marina Alta although two Valencian Community municipalities, Almoradi

by Simon Russell

and Torrevieja, both have even lower average salaries. Of the Marina Alta’s other major towns the figure for Javea is €8,402 and in Denia €9,216. Work that is only seasonal, short term contracts and lack of professional qualifications are all factors

in the low wages in Calpe as well as undeclared “black market” work. The national survey was for the 405 municipalities across the country that have an official population of over 20,000. Pozuelo de Alarco (Madrid) once again had the highest figure at a comfortable €26,000 per person.

REPSOL FINE ENDORSED

PETROL company Repsol has had a 23 million euro fine for price fixing confirmed by Spain´s Supreme Court. The oil giant had the fine imposed on it three year´s ago by Spain´s competition regulator, after it found it guilty of colluding with other firms in rigging pump prices.

by Simon Russell

Repsol decided to appeal, and the Supreme Court supported the original ruling as it backed the findings that showed the company swapped information with rivals over pricing. One of the main factors in the appeal was a technical

matter that Repsol´s rule breaking was actually committed by a sole Spanish subsidiary, as opposed to the main parent company. The Supreme Court said that the ownership point was irrelevant, as in their view a parent company has to carry the can for the behaviour of any of their subsidiaries.

Spanish Inheritance Tax! If you are a Spanish Tax resident or deemed a Spanish Tax Resident, or are non-resident but own property or assets in Spain, your spouse/beneficiary could be liable to Spanish Inheritance Tax upon your death. This tax is known in Spain as Impuesto

De Sucesiones or ISD for short. Each region of Spain has different rates and allowances. However, the Valencian region currently has some of the highest rates of Inheritance Tax in Spain.

If you are deemed a UK Domicile (different from UK Resident) but live in Spain, this can also mean UK Inheritance Tax is payable by your estate (spouse to spouse is exempt in the UK).

Depending on the size of your wealth, ISD tax may apply to married couples on the death of the first spouse and the tax has to be paid within 6 months of the date of death. All joint assets in Spain are frozen on death, this includes Spanish bank accounts. If you are tax resident in Spain, all your worldwide assets wherever they may be located, are included in the calculation.

Spanish Inheritance Tax (ISD) and UK inheritance tax (IHT) are very complex subjects, unravel the mysteries and find out how it could affect you, your family, and/or heirs and what, if possible, can be done to reduce or mitigate it. Kuala Lumpur by Yvonne Hollywood, Worldwide Horizons Kuala Lumpur is the capital city of Malaysia, a country in Southeast Asia. The country shares a land border with Thailand and Maritime borders with Singapore, Vietnam and Indonesia, Brunei and the Philippines. Many of these neighbouring countries influences in food and culture can also be found in KL, which, with a population, a little under 2 million people, is the largest city in the country. As with many of the Asian capital cities, KL is ultra modern, with a skyline dotted by high rise buildings, the most famous of which are the Petronas Towers, the tallest twin towers in the world. The towers are 88 floors high and connected by a glass walkway, available by prior booking for visits for those who have a good head for heights. The towers also had a starring role in the film Entrapment, featuring Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta Jones, filmed there in in the 1990s.

The Petronas Towers are located in the area called KLCC (Kuala Lumpur City Centre), which along with the areas of Bukit Bintang and Chinatown, are known as KLĚ s Golden Triangle. Inside this area, you will find night markets,

street food, uptown shopping centres (such as at the foot of the Towers) and tourist gift wares readily available.

Sundays, there are free guided walking tours to give you the full history of these Botanical gardens.

Leaving the shopping behind, you can also visit the Petrosains science exhibition, an interactive museum dedicated to the history of hydrocarbons. The exhibition is regularly updated by Petronas, the Malaysian oil company, who also display their F1 racing cars here.

With some time on your hands, make sure you visit the Batu Caves, a limestone hill with a series of caves and temples. Behind a stunning golden statue, you must climb some steep steps to gain entrance into this temple, but the interior and the views are well worth the effort. Most hotels have details on booking this day trip. Rock climbing and abseiling are also locally offered from adventure companies.

For the marine life lovers, visit Aquaria KLCC, holding over 150 species of marine life in just under a half a million square meters. After such a visit, you can take some time out in the beautifully landscaped Lake Gardens, located around Lake Perdana. Here you can walk around the Orchid Garden, Hibiscus Garden, Bird Park and Butterfly House. Make sure you give yourself enough time to enjoy – on

As a city break, Kuala Lumpur has everything to offer, whilst also being in a great location to use as a stop-off to other destinations nearby. For stunning beaches and chill-out locations, take a direct flight to Langkawi. In both places, accommodation is plentiful and for every budget.

PROPERTY TAXES IN SPAIN

by Alex Trelinski

When buying or selling a home in Spain, there is the taxman wanting his cut, but the position is relatively straight-forward over what people have to pay. How much, of course, is a different matter! If you buy a property in the country, there are essentially two taxes that you have to pay, namely:IVA(Spain´s equivalent of VAT). This has to be paid by anyone who buys a newly built home in Spain. In general, a home is regarded as new when it is sold directly by the property developer, with some exceptions such as when the property has been rented. The amount of IVA will be calculated as 10 per cent of the

sale value, the final closing price, as it appears in the title deed. 2. ITP (Property Transfer Tax). The ITP is applied to properties to which IVA, which basically comes into play when you buy a second-hand home, or when after the construction or rehabilitation of the property, a person other than the developer sells the property. The ITP is be paid in the Autonomous Community in which the property is located, like Valencia or Murcia. The percentage to be applied to the final price varies by region, as well as your personal tax situation.

This is a tax that must be paid on January 1st each year, and is paid to your local Town Hall. The figure to be paid is calculated based on the cadastral value of the property, which means the percentage the amount of tax you have to pay will be different depending on the place where the property is located and your personal circumstances. IRPF (Personal Income Tax). When an individual who is a resident for tax purposes in Spain Once you own property, you (normally, when he or she resides have to pay the following taxes:- in Spain for more than 183 days) IBI (Tax on Real Estate Assets). is the owner of a property, he or

WHY BUY IN SPAIN?

she is obliged to declare this in their IRPF return. Essentially if you live in Spain, IRPF does not come into play, but if you let out the property or just use it as a holiday home, then there will be tax to pay. 3. IRNR(Non-residents´ Income Tax). When a person who is not a tax resident in Spain is the owner of a home there, they must also pay their taxes by submitting the corresponding forms individually or through a property manager or other representative.

Many factors have been combining over the last year or so to make it the perfect time to buy a Spanish property for either your retirement or a holiday home. Over half a million properties changed hands in Spain last year. This was the first time the milestone was reached since the financial crisis. The number of mortgages granted in Spain rose by 20 per cent last year, and the British continue to be in the vanguard of foreign buyers. According to American International Living magazine’s 2019 Best Places to Retire Index, Spain is in second place in Europe after Portugal. Data was collected from expats living on the five continents and their experiences with life in their chosen country, including healthcare, climate, food, cost of living and bureaucracy. Spain, with over 50 percent of the coastline on the Mediterranean, actually beats

If you are selling a property in Spain, then there is once crucial tax that you need to be across:Plusvalía (Capital Gains Tax). When a property is sold, there is an obligation to pay the “Plusvalía” for the increase in the value of the property. It is a tax that will be paid to the local authorities by the person who sells a property. This tax has some controversy surrounding it because there have been cases where it has been levied despite the owner making a loss on the sale.

Portugal for climate, escaping the strong Atlantic winds. The country has the most sought-after beaches by tourists (669 of which are Blue Flag beaches, many of which are on the Costa Blanca). The magazine says that eating in Spain “is cheap and easy”, particularly eating at bar or restaurant, and it also praises Spanish markets and supermarkets, especially for fresh produce. Spain also has one of the lowest costs of living in Europe, and crucially one of the most lauded healthcare systems in the world. All these points are important in attracting home buyers to the country, and with property prices continuing to rise, though nowhere near the boom levels in the previous decade, now is certainly the moment to make your move in Spain, especially if you have be toying with the idea!

Home&Garden Looking after your pool The most important thing to remember is that you don’t need to be a chemist to look after your pool. You just need to acquire a little knowledge of the chemicals you are using so you can use them safely. By following our 3 point guide below you will gather all the information you need for opening your pool.

is out of this range then it can be adjusted using either pH Increaser or pH Reducer. Following on from this you will need to shock treat your pool by adding a large dose of chlorine to the water. To do this dissolve 750g of Rapid Chlorine Granules (Sodium Dichloroisocyanurate) per 10,000 gallons of pool water in a bucket of warm water then distribute evenly around the pool. If algae are present in the water then you may need to double or even treble this dose in order to remove it. After shock dosing, you may need to add a flocculent to help remove the dead algae. Dilute 250ml of Sparkle per 10,000 gallons in a bucket and distribute around the pool. Remeber to read instructions and directions before using as pool products may be different.

If the pH is above 7, the water is basic; if it is below 7 the water is acid. The optimum pH for pool water is 7.4, since this is the same as the pH in human eyes and mucous membranes. Chlorine compounds may provide organic or inorganic chlorine.

Organic chlorine is trichlorisocyanuric acid (for weekly chlorination) and dichlorisocyanuric acid (dissolves rapidly and is suitable for small pools). Inorganic chlorine is calcium hypochlorite (for daily and shock chlorination) and sodium hypochlorite (liquid). When a pool is dosed with either organic or inorganic chlorine it is free chlorine that attacks bacteria and contaminants. As the chlorine acts it is converted into combined chlorine. Combined chlorine (also known as chloramines) is ineffective, smells of chlorine and may cause irritation of the eyes and mucous membranes. To reduce the combined chlorine, the pool is shock chlorinated with calcium hypochlorite. The high chlorine content that forms temporarily on shock chlorination disappears quite quickly in an outdoor pool, but can also be lowered with chlorine reduction compounds. Chlorine is continuously consumed in the pool, and different factors determine the chlorine consumption, including bathing frequency, water temperature, sunlight and pool size. A test kit is used to measure the chlorine content. Most kits measure free chlorine, but to measure the combined chlorine you need to measure total chlorine. Total chlorine is the sum of free and combined chlorine. If organic chlorine (weekly chlorination) is used, cyanuric acid accumulates in the pool. Where the cyanuric acid content is above 100 ppm (mg/l), chlorine blocking may occur, making the chlorine ineffective. Cyanuric acid can be removed by adding water from the mains supply. Cyanuric acid acts as a chlorine stabilizer, preventing the sunlight from breaking down the chlorine, for example. It is therefore advisable for outdoor pools to have a cyanuric acid level of 30-50 ppm (mg/l). Guideline values for pH 7,4 and a pool temperature up to 35°C: : Free chlorine: Combined chlorine: Total chlorine: Cyanuric acid: Salinity:

0,5-1,6 ppm (mg/l) 0-0,4 ppm (mg/l) Max 2,0 ppm (mg/l) 30-50 ppm (mg/l) Max 250 ppm (mg/l) (0,025%)

bottom of the pool for you. This Polaris Pool 360 ranks middleof-the-road in terms of pricing and consistently receives fivestar performance reviews In addition to skimming, you need to scrub the sides of the pool to prevent algae build-up. Thankfully, that doesn’t need to

be done quite as often. You can get away with scrubbing once every other week. Just look for any growths and go at them with a scrub brush to keep your siding looking fresh and clean. For those particularly stubborn spots that won’t go away with any amount of elbow

grease? Repurpose an old sock. Fill it with chlorine and let it sit on top of the spot for a few hours before scrubbing once more. The chlorine will eat away at the algae and you’ll finally have a use for those socks without pairs. It’s a winwin.

The other side of the Island

Much has been written regarding the return of the fun, frothy, bikini-fest dating show Love Island, but the darker side of life after the cameras stop rolling is never far away. As the latest season of the show gets underway, with its usual cast of wannabees, news emerged that another one of its previous contestants committed suicide, unable to cope with life after the show. Mike Thalassitis died by suicide, an inquest heard on Wednesday morning. Thalassitis was found dead in March at the age of 26, with the inquest taking place more than two months later, at North London Coroner’s Court. Coroner Andrew Walker concluded that Thalassitis took his own life, after consuming a mixture of alcohol and cocaine. Mike’s death – as well as that of fellow Love Island star Sophie Gradon, who a coroner also ruled, had taken her own life – led to a widespread debate about the support offered by the ITV2 reality series after those involved leave the show. This discussion brought about a number of

Thalassitis committed suicide in March changes to their aftercare processes for the new series including new financial and social media training. Contestants on this year’s series will also have to attend a minimum of eight therapy sessions after leaving the Island, while producers have said they will also take a more proactive approach in reaching out to participants. Too little too late in many ways, but Love Island has become the biggest series on ITV 2, so I guess the show must go on at any cost.

Reassuring news for non-dancers like myself, came this week with the revelation that some of the Strictly Come Dancing celebrities enjoy a little pre-show tipple. Paralympian Jonnie Peacock, who appeared on the 2017 series, with partner OtiMabuse, joked that “A little shot doesn’t hurt” to calm the pre-performance nerves. “At the time, I didn’t even dance when I was out and pretty drunk, so to go out and do it sober – or mostly sober – in front of quite a few people was quite tricky,” he told HuffPost UK. Little shot Jonnie? It would take me the best part of a bottle of Jagermeister before I set foot anywhere near a dance floor mister!

Osea Island, nicknamed the English ‘Necker’

Exciting news for fans of Rihanna, who confirmed to her followers on Twitter that she had been up at 5.40am and straight into the recording studio, one day earlier this week. However, the star, who hails from the Caribbean Island of Barbados and could have headed back there to record her material in the sun, has chosen a far more humble venue to lay down her new tracks. She has been renting a state-of-the-art studio on Osea island – which has

Well, it seems, he wasn’t quite as charitable with those a little closer to him, as has been revealed this week, when details of his will emerged. The star has reportedly left his partner

its own gym, cinema and pool as well as quaint little cottages for her entourage. After relocating to the UK last year, the singer has frequently been holed up on the island in an estuary in Essex. Osea Island, nicknamed “the English Necker,” costs £20,000 to rent per day, which is a drop in the estuary for the multi-millionaire singer, but let’s hope she doesn’t bump into The GC on her morning jog. Now that would be a collision worth watching.

Life not nice for the Spice

Six shows into their latest comeback tour and The Spice Girls are still getting faint praise and a good deal of moans and groans from their devoted fans who have flooded social media sites to air their grievances. The teething troubles began with sound problems on the Irish leg of their tour when people were left unable to hear the girls sing (could have been a blessing in disguise if you ask me!). Fuming fans demanded a refund on their tickets and even Mel B took to Twitter to issue a grovelling kind of apology, agreeing the sound quality was c**p. Fast forward to their latest gig in the illustrious surroundings of the Ricoh Arena in Coventry and the sound issues appear to

have been ironed out. But, now the fans are moaning about security measures and car park mismanagement that left them sitting for hours in their vehicles trying to leave the venue. One attendee even threatened legal action, as they wrote: ‘@RicohArena don’t even know where to begin explaining how disrespectful and discriminative you have been to those with disabilities this evening! I shall be sending an email but if ignored as you seem to do often I shall be seeking legal advice... I bet Victoria Beckham’s sitting in her sewing room, chuckling to herself, glad she decided to take herself out of the circus and concentrate on running up her latest designer gown.

A blackand-white crossword-style grid is set up for each quote, with a number of letters “hovering” above each column. Your task is to “drop” each of those letters into the appropriate square in each column, until the entire quote is revealed. All punctuation (commas, periods, dashes, etc.) has been removed. The wild boar is the ancestor of the domestic pig. It is common throughout the Iberian Peninsula, except in the arid south-east, where it is relatively rare, though I have seen their tracks in the desert landscape of Cabo de Gata, the driest corner of continental Europe. The absence of water is a limiting factor. This is because all pigs lack sweat glands and cool themselves by wallowing in mud. They are absent from the Balearics and the Canaries. Except in the wolf areas of Northern Spain, the wild boar has no natural predators in Spain, and is in clear expansion, as a result of the abandonment of the countryside and recovery of the forest. This is despite game hunting of some 60,000100,000 animals a year. In some areas (eg much of Catalonia) boars have become a serioius agricultural and the

hunting season is frequently brought forward to try (often in vain) to put a check on them. Boars also come into conflict with ‘man’ in peri-urban areas, such as on the outskirts of Barcelona where over-familiarisation with humans can bring people dangerously close to what is a wild animal, particularly when this is a sow with young. Boars are increasingly attracted to urban edges, lured by easy pickings among rubbish containers and gardens as they lose their fear of man. Boars also have an important ecological role in helping to clear forests, especially since the catastrophic decline of the rabbit. Walk around any Iberian forest or health and you’ll see the larges patches of bare earth scuffed up by boars. They are basically beneficial to woodland ecology, as they root up and overturn earth creat-

ing seedbeds in search of worms and grubs and whatnot. Such areas can be colonised by annuals so attracting insects and these bringing birds, and so on up the food chain. There are, however, losers too:

Erectile dysfunction

Erection problems (impotence) are very common, particularly in men over 40. It’s usually nothing to worry about, but you should see a GP if it keeps happening.

Your GP might recommend sex therapy, either on its own or in combination with other psychotherapy. There’s usually a long wait for these services on the NHS. You can also pay to see someone privately.

If it happens more often, it may be caused by physical or emotional problems. See a GP or go to a sexual health clinic if erection problems keep happening, It could be a sign of an underlying health condition.

Alcohol and the liver

Alcohol-related liver disease (ARLD) is damage to the liver caused by excess alcohol intake. There are several stages of severity and a range of associated symptoms.

The problem is that you don’t usually, get any symptoms until the liver has been severely damaged. When this happens, the symptoms may include: Feeling sick, Losing weight, loss of appetite, Yellowing of the eyes and skin, swelling in the ankles and abdomen Confusion or drowsiness Vomiting blood or passing blood in your stools

Often it is diagnosed when you are being investigated for other conditions, or at a stage of advanced liver damage. If you regularly drink alcohol to excess, tell your Dr so they can check if your liver is damaged.

Preventing ARLD

How ARLD is treated There’s currently no specific medical treatment for ARLD. The main treatment is to stop drinking, preferably for the rest of your life. This reduces the risk of further damage to your liver and gives it the best chance of recovering. If a person is dependent on alcohol, stopping drinking can be very difficult. But support, advice and medical treatment may be available through local alcohol support services. A liver transplant may be required in severe cases where the liver has stopped functioning and doesn’t improve when you stop drinking alcohol. You’ll only be

The most effective way to prevent ARLD is to stop drinking alcohol or stick to the recommended limits: Men and women are advised not to regularly drink more than 14 units a week. Spread your drinking over 3 days or more if you drink as much as 14 units a week. A unit of alcohol is equal to about half a pint of normal-strength lager or a pub measure (25ml) of spirits. Even if you have been a heavy drinker for many years, reducing or stopping your alcohol intake will have important short and long-term benefits for your liver and overall health.

FRIDAY 7TH JUNE 2019

Motoring The Peugeot 508 SW is an attractive estate car which rivals the likes of the Skoda Superb and Volkswagen Passat. Like the Fastback model, the 508 SW is an attempt to move the brand upmarket - which explains why prices start at around £5000 more than the equivalent Vauxhall Insignia or Ford Mondeo.

Peugeot 508 SW

It certainly looks the part thanks to its lower and sleeker design, while frameless doors are offered for the first time in an estate of this size. The interior feels equally special, taking a similar approach to the excellent 3008 and 5008. There’s Peugeot’s trademark tiny steering wheel, a 10-inch wide HD touchscreen (on all but entry-level models) and a configurable 12.3inch digital head-up display. Toggle switches help it stand out, while plenty of soft-touch materials make it feel more premium than mainstream alternatives. The 508 SW’s 530 litres of boot space falls short compared to the Skoda Superb, but it’s a useful shape with easy access. Folding the rear seats using Peugeot’s Magic Flat feature is easy, should you need more space - leaving a generous 1780 litres of space. There’s a variety of petrol and diesel engines available, with even the lower-powered models offering more than adequate performance for a car of this type. The 180PS entrylevel petrol is particularly good, although the majority of buyers will opt for a diesel. The entire diesel

line-up is strong, combining impressive fuel economy with a refined drive. Most models are paired with a very good eight-speed automatic transmission, although the entry-level diesel is available with a sixspeed manual gearbox. A plug-in hybrid is set to follow

late in 2019. Few buyers will be convinced the 508 SW is a genuine alternative to premium brands - and, with top-spec models nudging £40,000, it’s certainly a bold choice. But it’s a good one, with an excellent interior and plenty of room for the family.

Jaguar Land Rover and BMW join forces on electric cars

BMW and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) are to join forces on developing electric car technologies. The car giants said they would work together to develop electric motors, transmissions and power electronics. Both firms have struggled to

maintain profit margins amid falling car sales and higher costs as well as the need to invest in future technologies. Car firms are being forced to make low emission vehicles to meet more stringent antipollution rules. There have been a number of

similar tie-ups aimed at sharing the costs of developing electric cars. Volkswagen and Ford, for example, are working together on new vehicles. Meanwhile, rivals FiatChrysler and Renault are exploring a $35bn tie-up.

A field of 21 players all enjoyed the day, with the presentation to the winners being held at the course, due to our later than normal start time. The nearest the pins winners were; Alastair Quinn on

his last game with us for a while, Mick Cook, and Geoff Ettridge our Vice-Captain collecting 2! The 2’s pot was collected by our serial roll over winner Mick Cook. The Gold division was won by Mick Cook with 37 points and the winner of the Silver division also with 37 points was one of our Found-

er and senior members, Bill England, who on countback won the FOUNDER’S TROPHY. Well done to all the winners. Our next game is on Thursday 13th June at Las Colinas, the entry sheet for this game is on the notice board at the Sport’s Complex in La Marina Urbanisation.

Las Ramblas Golf Society Just ½ a point separated our top three teams in Monday’s Texas Scramble. By a whisker and with a nett score of 59.375 our winners were Ron Phipps, Mike Mahony and Mike Chapman. (Seems like Mike Chapman is mentioned a lot just lately)! Onto Wednesday and it was round 5 (of 6) for the Club Championship Stableford. John Shervell and Alan Douglas both managed a ‘2’ today but went home empty handed after RegAkehurst (at the ripe old age of 89) scored a hole in one on the 6th. Now a hole in one is a rare thing indeed but not long afterwards Andy McDonald also managed to get one! This time it was on the tricky 14th. Thanks for

the beers boys! Ken Robertson took the honours on the day with a resounding 42 points. Hot on his heels, with 41, was Geoff Biggerstaff and in third place with 38 points was Olga Douglas. It was the ‘counter game’ on Friday and in first place with 96 points (which is 10 less than our record) were John and Ellen Drakesmith, Heinz Lei and the ever faithful ‘Albert’. Por ultimo, in the words of the great William Wordsworth himself ‘Golf is a day spent in a round of strenuous idleness.’ Pues hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell

FIRED UP KONTA by Alex Trelinski

Johanna Konta is playing “better tennis than anybody” and can win her maiden Grand Slam title at the French Open, says 1976 champion Sue Barker. The British number one, 28, meets Czech teenager Marketa Vondrousova in a last-four match pushed back to today(Friday) by bad weather in Paris. No British woman has reached the Roland Garros final since Barker won her only Grand Slam in Paris 43 years ago. “Jo is playing the best tennis I have ever seen her play,” Barker said. American great Billie Jean King agreed with Barker, saying Konta was now a better player than she was when she reached the 2017 Wimbledon semi-finals. Konta would become the first British slam finalist since Virginia Wade went on to win Wimbledon in 1977.

Britain´s Anthony Joshua says he has no excuses for his shock defeat by Andy Ruiz Jr, in which he lost his IBF, WBO and WBA world heavyweight titles. The weekend loss in New York was the first of Joshua’s 23-fight professional career and he has dismissed suggestions anything was wrong with him. “I had no panic attack,” the 29-year-old said in video posted online on Wednesday. “I have to take my loss like a man. No blaming anyone or anything.” Joshua’s promoter

Eddie Hearn announced on Tuesday that a rematch with United States-born Mexican Ruiz, part of the contract for Saturday’s fight, would take place in the UK in November or December. “I am the one who went in there to perform and my performance did not go to plan. My gameplan didn’t go to plan,” added Joshua. “I have to readjust, analyse, do my best to correct it - and get the job done in the rematch.”

Lopetegui, 52, was controversially sacked by Spain two days before the start of the 2018 World Cup after he was named as the new Real manager. LOTS MORE AHEAD

lenge is this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix, which he has won six of the past 11 times it has been held. A victory at Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Sunday would put him level with German great Schumacher as the driver with the most wins on the historic track on the Ile Notre Dame.

WELCOME RETURN

Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer have welcomed the prospect of Britain’s Andy Murray returning to top-level tennis at Queens Club. Murray, 32, has not played since hip surgery following the Australian Open. He described his doubles appearance alongside Spain’s Feliciano Lopez at the Fever-Tree Championships later this month as “the next step” in his return. Nadal said:- “It’s great news for, first, for him and for his team and family, and then for the tour by itself. I’m happy for it, and especially happy for him.” Roger Federer commented:“I think all of us top guys would be thrilled to see him back on the tour.” Murray is in no hurry to return to singles play, but could yet pop up in the doubles at Wimbledon.
