BRIT STEALS COCA COLA TRUCK

A British man was arrested in Benidorm last saturday, after he took a joyride in a Coca Cola delivery truck, hit another vehicle, then refused a police breathalyser test. The incident occurred around 5pm on the busy Avenida de Mediterraneo, artery which runs parallel to Levante beach in the popular Rincon de Loix area of the town. The suspect drove off in the delivery truck whilst the driver and his colleague were away from the vehicle, delivering goods to bars and restaurants, leaving the keys in the ignition. He drove along the dual carriageway, but crashed into a parked car at the junction with Calle Filipinas, causing damage, but no injuries. The van drivers had alerted emergency services, who dispatched National police officers to the scene.

The officers apprehended the culprit as he was attempting to leave the truck, forcibly bringing him to the ground. The incident, which occurred during the early evening rush, was witnessed by crowds of pedestrians, with unconfirmed reports from some of them suggesting the British man had been drinking heavily. After refusing to take a breathalyser test, the man was arrested by the police and taken to Benidorm Police Station, where he was detained for questioning. Police were able to view footage from the truck’s onboard video camera, which recorded the whole incident. Lorenzo Martin, Benidorm city councillor responsible for security, praised the actions of the police officers who brought the incident under control, without injury, “It once again demonstrates the effectiveness of the security force in Benidorm city”, he said.

The well known bus

operator, with many years experience, has been running a similar service between Alicante Airport and Alfas del Pi successfully for the past three years. Speaking at the launch event, Alfas del Pi mayor, Vicente Arques, said the service, which is available seven days a week and 365 days a year, will help to make the town and beach

area, the most accessible in the region for tourists. Tickets cost 12 euros per journey and must be booked in advance by phone or via the bus company’s website. Visitors leaving the town, must plan their departure to arrive at Alicante station at least 45 minutes prior to their train’s departure time. Those arriving at the station will be met by a representative of

Beniconnect, who will guide them to their connecting transport. The maximum waiting time for a connection will be 30 minutes. Director of bus operator ITS, Juan Jose Perez, stressed that Beniconnect was, “ The only operator who provides this service in the whole of the Marina Baixa area from Villajoyosa to Denia”.

“We have 29 buses and minibuses,102 staff and carried 422,000 passengers last year”, he added. IN scenes redolent of 1970’s package holidays, Benidorm still has an issue with tourists using sunbeds to get the best spot. These days it is not the pool but people getting up early to park sunbeds on the front line of the beach before returning to them at a more sociable time and nabbing the prime spot for the day. It is the fact that people are leaving the beds un-occupied that is riling other holidaymakers and there was actually a bylaw passed in the city to prevent this abuse. However in practice the new guidelines are not being enforced and many are calling for it to be applied more rigorously as the season proper starts. There is also clarification needed as to what sanctions should be imposed on offenders e.g. fines or simply removal of the offending sunbeds.

Visitors to Benidorm will be able to take advantage of free Wi-Fi on the beaches and in old town of Benidorm by the end of April. Launching the initiative, in conjunction with Wi-Fi provider Wiongo, at a press conference earlier this week, city mayor Toni Perez said around two million people are expected to benefit from the free service each year. Free Wi-Fi is already available to visitors to the Levante beach area of town and Mirador del Castillo viewpoint and to prove the efficiency of the service,

Joint fiesta weekend ahead for three Marina Baixa towns The fiesta of Sant Vicent Ferrer will be celebrated this weekend by three neighbouring towns. Location for the festivities is the tiny ermita chapel, bearing the saints name, which is situated in the small hamlet of Captivador de La Nucia, sitting on a crossroads joining the towns of La Nucia, Alfas del Pi and Altea. The popular event brings together residents of all three municipalities, to share food, music and dancing for five days, culminating in the patron saint day of San Vicent Ferrer on Monday April 9th.

by Andy Mansall

The dates for the fiesta change every year, as they always take place on the weekend after Easter. Sant Vicent Ferrer died on April 5th 1419, in the town of Vannes in France, which was at the time ruled by Britain. This year is the 600th anniversary of his death, which adds further significance to the celebrations. Following a service in Alfas del Pi on Thursday, a marquee will be erected in the square next to the ermita Sant Vicent Ferrer, which will stay

open for 24 hours throughout the four days, with local Valencian specialities such as paella being served, along with entertainment from bands, dj’s and dance troupes. On Monday April 9th, a service will be held in the small chapel, where the ‘ex ossibus’ relic, from Rome, will be presented directly from the Vatican to begin the official jubilee year of the saint. For more information on the event check out the websites of the participating town’s, whose fiesta committee’s share responsibility and costs for the fiesta.

GET OFF MY ISLAND!

I

´ve got me knickers in a twist. My favourite place in the world has been sold. My beloved island of Ś Espalmador, Formenterá s little sister in Ibiza, has been sold to a family from Luxembourg. For 18 million euros.

Note how I use the word “my” there, even as I process the news that the island has been sold. Obviously my knickers are

mine, but the island clearly isn´t, never has been and never will be. However, I have spent so much precious time there it feels like I have a huge (even if only emotional) stake in it. Which is exactly how many Brits feel about Ibiza, based on their loyal devotion year in and year out. Like they own the place, basically! The small, stunning island with white, white beaches, turquoise waters and (now) famous mud baths was sold to a Brit by an

Ibicenco back in 1932 for the equivalent of 252 euros. (In the Balearics, back in the day, unfarmable shore-land was inherited by the “unimportant” daughters. Happily when tourism arrived the girls cashed in. The British inheritors of the island Norman and Rosy Cinnamond who have just “sold up” claim that they would have liked Formentera to own it as public property but oddly enough the government didn´t have that kind of money lying around (originally it was priced at 24 million). I suspect that Norman and Rosy knew for sure that they wouldn´t be giving the island back to the people of Formentera. Silvia Tur, a local politician, has been telling the press that the island, being part of the Ses Salinas National Park, is subject to strict protection laws that will have to be observed, with no building or tourism business allowed. It´s ok though, everyone. In case you were worried that the Luxemburg family had blown 18m on nothing, there is a house on the island with 13 bedrooms, and a little church for the Luxies to atone for their sins in. It doesn´t seem right to me that any individual can own such a stunning slice of the world that surely should be respectfully enjoyed by the public. However, we don´t really know what will happen yet. Some say that the local law dictates that its beaches and waterfront remain public, and if they don´t we will see some major protesting in Ibiza and Formentera for sure. And from many “extranjeros” too.

HOME FROM HOME

Why are me and my knickers so twisted about this? In 2002 I bought (with a mortgage and a boyfriend) a hiperformance 5 x 10 m catamaran and set up a charter company which I ran for 12 years. We would take groups of up to 10 sailing with the usual route being from Salinas Beach, where I lived, to Formentera, almost always via S´Espalmador. In those days we would nudge the cat right up to the beach, help our clients literally slide off the boat, and then guide our clients across the magical island to the surreal and then littleknown mud baths. Here we would strip and smother ourselves in the “detoxifying” mud, laugh a great deal, take lots of photos of each other and head back to the sea to wash off. A fantastic time was had by all again and again and again, before we moved on to Formentera to snorkel a bit and then send our clients off for a four-hour lunch before sailing them home as the sun set. Yes, it was a bit of a dream job. Not least because clients were so incredibly happy and grateful at the end of the day. There is also a shallow lagoon on S´Espalmador and being a catamaran with a very shallow drought (not much underneath) we would happily join humble fishing boats, getting well away from the silly superyachts, for camping trips. Quite literally heaven on earth and sea. Over the years the mud baths became better known, and big party boats rocked

by Fiona Jennison

up to unload the masses, overloading the mud and meaning that the sea was saturated in the mud. The authorities have recently curbed licenses for these annoying party boatsand quite a few years ago all boats were made to moor on eco-friendly buoys that had been placed to protect the precious Posidonia algae that keeps the waters of Formentera and Salinas so pure and clean.

CROWD CONTROL

I sold my catamaran to some young guys who are passionately eco-friendly. They installed electric engines, at great expense and quite a lot of maintenance risk, even though we barely used engines as the boat needs hardly any wind. Says Martin “I think people should only be allowed to access S´Espalmador without using any fuel. That would keep the numbers down and the fish and algae happy! We will be trying to contact the new owners to discuss this.” S´Espalmador is an extraordinary place, and the Luxiescouldn´t have bought more luxury in my opinion. For nine months of the year the island is incredibly tranquil, yet a stone´s throw from the exciting party island of Ibiza. They have “luxed out”! I know this for certain because I spent some time googling Private Islands Inc today. This is a website for “the independent with adventurous personality” apparently. Which I think translates as “stinking rich”. For any of you with 20 million dollars or more burning a hole in your pocket there is a surprising number of islands for sale around the world. But none of them compare to my S´Espalmador. For those of you who have a bit less cash I cannot recommend enough a day out on my old boat if you ever get over to Ibiza. Contact www.labellaverde.org. or call 603 807 588. Mention my name and you´ll get a bit of discount. fiona@weekender.news

relic and mass. The festival has special meaning this year as, since Sant Vicent Ferrer died in April 1419, they mark the start of the commemorations leading up the 600th anniversary; these began with a blessing of an image of the saint carved by sculptor Tonico Ballester.

Five rescued from fire by Jon Clarke

FIVE people have been evacuated from a residential building in El Campello after a fire broke out on Monday evening. Before firefighters arrived on the scene the Guardia Civil ensured everybody was safely out of the

building and one climbed to a first floor window to check nobody was trapped. The fire is believed to have been caused by cigarette butts not being properly put out before being thrown into a rubbish bin.

A free sunday morning guided walk along the stunning coastal path to the iconic Faro d’Albir lighthouse is part of a new initiative by Alfas del Pi town hall. The walk, which takes place on Sunday April 15th, starting at 10.00h, is being run in conjunction with the environment and natural spaces department of the Valencian regional government. Participants will be guided along the paved path, with information on key points of interest provided by experts in the flora and fauna of the area, which is part of the

protected Sierra Gelada Natural park. The aim of the event is to create awareness of the healthy environment in the municipality, whilst encouraging people to appreciate these resources in a responsible way. Anyone wishing to take part in the walk, which is expected to last around three hours, must register their attendance in advance by email or phone, as the event also includes a free healthy lunch

provided by the organisers. The walk is suitable for anyone with a general fitness level, as the undulating path is well paved and wide, with plenty of opportunity for rest stops and photo opportunities. Walkers, should wear comfortable footwear, warm clothing, shower proof coat and provide their own water. To register for this free event, send an email to serragelada@gva.es or telephone 629 321 248 during office hours 09.00h to 14.00h to reserve a place.

All editions of “Gardening on the Costa Blanca” can be found at www.weekender.news/CBGC or visit

Although the affect of Hydrogen sulphide on plant growth was discovered some years ago, there does not seem to be, as yet, any direct use in a horticultural context. It is not the only “wonder” substance available, however, and Gibberellic acid is a good example (the name is not as daunting as it looks, its pronunciation starting off like Gibraltar!). Gibberellins (GAs) are plant hormones that regulate growth and many other factors in a plant’s development and were first recognized in 1926 by a Japanese scientist studying bakanae, the “foolish seedling” disease in rice. This is a fungal disease which can have very serious effects on rice production causing seedlings to grow too long and thin so that they topple over (hence foolish!) and produce no edible grains. In gardening, however, Gibberellic Acid-3 (GA-3) is mainly used as a treatment for seeds which are difficult to germinate. Presoaking seeds in GA-3 solution will in many cases cause the rapid germination of many types of highly dormant seeds which would otherwise

need prolonged pretreatments such as cold treatment, after-ripening or aging,. Many different types of dormancy are overcome with GA-3 and excellent results are obtained with many ordinarily difficult seeds. For example, over the past few years, various penstemons have become increasingly popular as garden flowers. These plants grow and tolerate a wide range of temperatures and have a variety of flower types and colours. However, seeds of many species possess a dormancy that limits seed germination. As a result, individual germination requirements vary widely, both among and within species - fresh penstemon seed sown without any soaking will take 4 to 5 weeks to germinate with only a maximum of 50% success rate whereas seeds soaked in a high concentration of GA3 consistently give greater than 50% germination within 2 weeks. Not all seeds respond well, however, and even amateur experiment can produce interesting and useful information. GA-3 kits are readily available through Amazon, for example.

Smoke is another interesting treatment which has been developed quite recently. It has been realised that many Australian, South African and even Mediterranean plant seeds which have proved difficult to germinate in the past, seem to do quite well in their native areas after there has been a bush fire or its local equivalent. Perhaps the seeds respond at this time because the tall vegetation which blocks out the sunlight has been removed.(It has been suggested that the heat may be more important than smoke for the Mediterranean species like Cistus which germinate profusely after fires locally). However, smoke-stimulated germination is not limited to species from fire-prone habitats and a variety of species from fire-free habitats also respond positively. Again suppliers have responded to meet a demand and you can now buy smoke primer paper - absorbent paper impregnated with smoke-saturated water. When dormant seeds need “smoking”, you add some water to the paper in a suitable container and soak the

seeds you want in the smoke-water solution for 24 hours. In order to have the maximum effect in breaking seed dormancy, a range of natural germination stimulators has been added to the smoke solution to overcome other forms of seed dormancy found in many species. That’s more than enough technical stuff for one week – back to more mundane matters next time!

Drop Quotes

Drop Quotes are similar to cryptograms, in that the goal is for the solver to uncover a hidden quote. A black-and-white crossword-style grid is set up for each quote, with a number of letters “hovering” above each column. Your task is to “drop” each of those letters into the appropriate square in each column, until the entire quote is revealed. All punctuation (commas, periods, dashes, etc.) has been removed. Good luck!

FRIDAY 6TH APRIL 2018

Sport

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

With all the Internationals out of the way until next June when we can all look forward to the young England team having a good run in the World Cup in Russia as long as we don’t freeze like we did when we played Iceland in the Euro.Championship. The Premier League & the Alfaz Fantasy Football League was back to normal after the break. The Easter Bunny brought plenty of points to the A.F.F.L. when a full Premier League programme gave the Fantasy 29 goals,5 clean sheets,33 yellow cards and 1 red one which was Leicester City’s Nigerian Mid-Fielder Wilfred Ndidi who received a 2nd yellow from Referee Chris Kavanagh. The Referees were in a giving mood at the Weekend by awarding 5 penalties of which one was missed when Leicester’s Keeper Kasper Schmeichel saved Brighton’s Glen Murray’s kick which helped the 7 Fantasy Managers who selected him to a welcome 5 points. At the top of the A.F.F.L. Darren’s team Daz XI are showing no signs of easing up as we go into the final stages of the Season. This week they increased their lead at the Summit over Pauline’s Vodka Army to 51 points which is quite a lot to pull back with 8 weeks to go but it has been done before. Joe’s Keith Lard F.C.(3rd), Ryan’s team My Gylfi Pleasure(4th) and Dominic’s Barnsley Braves(5th) are all in contention and are waiting for the Leaders to slip up.Down at the foot of the table, Laura’s Legends can’t seem to make up any ground on Reggie’s Rejects as the gap now is 70 points. We have new leaders at the top of our U.K.T.V.SPAIN Junior League as Wade’s team Ali Barber have sneaked

ahead of former leaders Kieron’s Clowns F.C. by 2 points.George’s side I Love Heather are in with a chance but they may be concentrating on our K.O.Cup Competition which they take part in this weekend against the favourites Barnsley Braves. At the other end of the table, Harley’s Ginger Ninjar pulled a few points back on Gian Luca’s Messi or Tidy but not enough to give them any hope of avoiding the drop at the end of the Season. Pauline’s Vodka Army have had our Mark Carter Ladies Section wrapped up since Christmas so the only interest is who finishes runnersup.Isobel’s team The Bluebells have been in 2nd place for the last 13 weeks but just 10 points behind them are Karen’s Ceasar’s Blackcats who have clawed their way into contention by replacing Rachel’s Mrs.Max & Paddy in 3rd place. No change at the bottom where Laura’s Legends are waiting for the trap door to open. Wayne’s team Two Years Running, Maybe have been top of our Golden Boot League since week 4 and they don’t look likely to relinquish their grip at the Summit.Daz XI are making a brave attempt to catch up to them but I think the 69 points will be a bridge too far them. Len’s team Nelson’s Flagship are still managing to keep their head above water at the foot of the table and are only 6 points adrift of Laura’s Legends. Our Top Manager of the week is Gill whose team On a Wing & a Prayer waded in with a 60 point tally. Her top Player was under fire Spur’s Dele Alli who silenced his critic’s with a brace of goals against Chelsea. One of his goals a real stunner.Gill’s team

will go into our Wyndham’s Monthly Wine Draw along with our lowest scoring team which was Richard’s High Fivers who funnily enough only scored 5 points. Manager of the Month for March has been kindly sponsored by The Hotel Moli in Alfaz who have recently opened a top class Restuarant as well as refurbishing the Old Hotel Moli. The lucky winner of this meal for 2 has been won by Terry whose team Coblanca Cruisers left Ryan’s team My Gylfi Pleasure 20 points behind in 2nd place. Danny’s team Bobbyz Beautiez have won this weeks Breakfast for 2 sponsored by Nikki at the Bar Code in Alfaz after leaping up 35 places from 166th place to 131st spot. This week the Quarter Finals of our Weekender K.O.Cup Competition takes place with 3 of our Junior Managers hoping to make it through to the Semis as they have avoided one another in the draw.Marcus’s Salford Sausages will play Rachel’s Mrs.Max & Paddy, Luca’s Already Won It will have a lot to live up to with a with a name like that to beat Karen’s team Ceasar’s Blackcats whilst George’s team I Love Heather will have to be at their best to beat the 5th placed team in the main League Barnsley Braves. The other tie is between 2 outsiders Lee’s Pineapple Chunks (105th) and Arthur’s team Arfa N’That who are our lowest ranked team in the 141st spot.Any ties finishing up level the replays will take place the following week.By the way, the last time a Junior Manager won this Competition was 10 years ago when Elly’s Real Gucci lifted the Trophy. C’mon you young ones!
