NURSE left victim in the road A nurse is facing legal action after running over a cyclist and then leaving him lying in the road. Francisco Romero, aged 40, was cycling back from work and hit by the nurses car, fairly close to Elda University Hospital. He was thrown high into the air and landed badly, unable to move but conscious. The driver left the car, identified herself as a health care professional

by Simon Russell

and said she was going to park and get help. However the driver did not return and Francisco called for help on his mobile; a Local Police car located nearby was first on the scene, closely followed by an ambulance. The victim had a fractured hip which required screws being fitted and he is now at home and

recovering. Doctors said that he was lucky not to be paralysed as a vertebral bone had slipped so a special brace also has to be worn by Francisco until his spine has healed. He admits he is both bewildered and shocked that the nurse did not return, especially considering what she does for a living. A nursing assistant at Elda University Hospital has been identified and is awaiting charges.

Scaremongering by UK press HOLIDAYMAKERS getting ready for a trip to Benidorm last week may have been alarmed to see a national UK paper loudly announcing the beach was closed. However the Expresses’ headline “SPAIN JELLYFISH WARNING:

Tourist beaches including Benidorm and Alicante CLOSED” was slightly disingenuous as Benidorm’s beaches remained open during the alert. As the article went on to say nearby Altea beach did have the red no bathing flag flying, although at

the time the council said this was partly due to the jellyfish risk but also dangerous sea conditions. The sightings of the Portuguese men o’ War also led to the temporary closure of Alicante’s San Juan beach, as the paper correctly reported.

Adopt a duck

THE colony of ducks at the pond in the Gorg de l’Omet Park in Canals has become something of an attraction for tourists and locals at the inland town, which is located near Xativa. However, partly helped by people feeding them, the duck population is starting to get out of control and is threatening the local eco-system. The birds are not native and though no-one knows for sure how they got there it is likely that someone released some pet birds – or didn’t have the heart to turn them into dinner. The local council has now asked Canals residents if they

want to adopt a bird to help ease the problem. People can have no more than four ducks and must sign up to pledges that they will care for the birds and that duck a la orange, for example, won’t be on the menu. The ducks droppings are starting to taint the waters they live in and driving out native birds while flora is also suffering. Uneaten food thrown in by members of the public is also rotting and causing potential health problems as the weather warms up. It has also attracted rodents and other pests to the large pond.

Sporting solidarity ORGANISERS of the “miBalon International Cup” donated €1,000 to AASD, the Downs Syndrome association, after the event. The cup was held at the Teulada City of Sports and the money was raised through ticket sales. A miBalon spokesman stressed the organisations commitment to supporting people through the game of football.

The cheque was handed to the AASD President, Maria Hurtado who was accompanied by her vice-president and director. Also present were several TeuladaMoraira councillors and Inmaculda Cholbi, the manager of La Caixa in Telulada-Moraira which helped stage the event.

A local deceased soldier and Guardia Civil officer were among those recognised for their achievements and bravery in a special awards ceremony this week in Valencia. Guardia officer Jorge Albadalejo was rewarded with the Grand Cross of the Order of San Cristobal for saving the lives of two children in rough waters off Torrevieja last year. The youngsters were swimming when the red flags were

flying and the conditions were so bad even the lifeguards refused to enter the water. However at great personal danger Jorge went into the sea and saved both children. The cross with distinction was awarded posthumously to Aaron Vidal, a Spanish soldier from Valencia who was killed on duty in Iran last year.

Aaron’s mother received the award on her son’s behalf. Two members of the Military Emergency Unit, Jose Marco and Jessica Velascoose, received the same award. The couple are married and, as well as serving their country with distinction, have set up a charity to help battle a rare form of cancer. This was after their young son died of the disease, called diffuse brain stem glioma.

Robot Olympics A team of pupils from the Trenc d’Alba School in Javea narrowly missed out on a place in the finals of the Robotics Olympiad after the regional phase was held last Sunday. This was staged in Valencia and the young robotics engineers finished runners-up in their section with only the winner progressing. The challenge was to create a robot that can reduce food waste by

arranging produce by expiration date and appearance. The products close to expiration can then be transferred to areas of the business that can use it immediately, minimising waste. The team received a diploma for their efforts and were told they were unlucky to miss out on the national finals in Gerona later this year. The international final will be held in Thailand at the end of 2018.

POLICE are connecting a knife attack on a woman and the body of a man who apparently hanged himself in the El Saler district of Valencia. A shocked local found the woman in a green area with slash wounds to her neck; the body of the man was hanging from a nearby tree. Police are working on the theory that this was a domestic violence incident, with the man attacking the woman before killing himself. However they do not have records of any history of violence between the deceased, aged 50, and the 45 year old stabbing victim and will be launching an investigation. The injured woman has been hospitalised with neck and chest wounds but they are not thought to be life threatening.

Race to the coast by Simon Russell

THE dramatic increase of the Marina Alta population over the last two decades hides a more worrying statistic, the gradual depopulation of the regions inland municipalities. The official population for the Marina Alta has grown by 40,000 people since 1996, but this breaks down as an increase of 72% on the coast and a decline of 7% inland. All of the nine coastal towns have increased to some degree, with Denia for example growing from 27,000 residents in 1996 to nearly 42,000 at the last count. The seventeen municipalities that just sit back from the coast have increased their number by 17% with Pedreguer for example

going from less than 6,000 inhabitants to 7,500. However the seven Marina Alta inland towns have all seen drops, many of them in danger of complete depopulation such as La Vall d’Alcala which had just 168 inhabitants officially registered at the end of 2017. The reasons are varied but while most newcomers, domestic and from abroad, have moved to the coasts, the inland towns have failed to attract them in any numbers. There has also been a gradual move away of youngsters from these towns, chasing work and a bigger social scene on the coastal areas. Many of these have moved to the “pre-coastal” strip such as Pedreguer and Pego where housing is generally cheaper but both the inland and coast are still accessible.

Third annual third age day

THE third “Jornadas Culturales” for the elderly in Pilar de la Horadada is scheduled to take place from 7 to 12 May. Introducing the programme, the Councillor for the Third Age Trinidad Escarabajal said that the town had an obligation to schedule activities for elderly residents, many of whom still have great energy and young minds.

Billed as six days of culture for the town’s senior citizens, there is a variety of talks, workshops and activities lined up. There will be two workshops in the Municipal Theatre, one on crafting and one on laughter therapy. Trips will be laid on to the La Union Mining Park and, as a

contrast, the Liquor 43 factory in Cartagena, both priced at €10 including food. In addition there will be an intergenerational day, theatre, a talk about personal security and other events. For further information go to www.facebook. com/culturapilardelahoradada or to the town hall website.

Beach brigade DATE DARE DANGER

LOCAL Police were notified after a young man climbed one of Javea’s tallest palm trees without any safety equipment or even shoes. Onlookers feared for his safety as the youth shimmied up the tree in Plaza Portal del Clot where a fall would almost certainly have resulted in serious injury or worse. However he seemed to

know what he was doing and got to the top, plucked a date, and came back down safely, all before the police arrived. It is thought that the stunt was done for a bet and that the date was proof of the achievement. The event was filmed and has been viewed many times on social media.

THIS Sunday 6 May, Javea is holding its second annual beach cleaning day. The “Limpieza del Litoral” features several firms involved in nautical activities and other tourist companies as well as members of the public. Each part of the coastline has been split into zones and the team of cleaners will be responsible for their own zone. As the water as well as the sands are set to be cleaned, there will be kayakers and divers allocated to each group while the rest will be done on foot. The Oceanographic by Matthew Richards Research Institute of Javea and the Excursionist Centre working with local children will also be at the event who are taking part in the

clean-up. In addition they will help co-ordinate the safety aspect of the day, alongside the Civil Protection, Red Cross and local police. If

you are interested in taking part you can go to the Tourism Office to register or call them on 965 794 356 or e-mail turisme@xabia.org

T E U L A D A council is putting forward plans to link the Cap d’Or footpath with the SL-CV50 path, better known as the Barranc de la ViudaCala de Lleibeig. This would extend the popular walk in a way that roughly replicates the original Cap d’Or route. As the extension would run through a protected micro-

reserve they will first need to get the permission of the Provincial Environment Department. Last week the towns Environment Councillor, Nieves Rodriguez, met with technicians from the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Development to take them to the area and discuss the plans.

Transport links slammed THE opposition Ciudadanos party in Javea have publicly denounced Javea’s public transport infrastructure. The bus service has come in for particular criticism; something they claim has stayed the same for several years while the city has

by Simon Russell

expanded. A spokesman said “it is worrisome that with a census of 30,000 inhabitants - a number that can double or even treble in the summer – only one bus line is available, just as it was several decades ago.” They went on to

say the existing line has not been modernised, which is inexplicable in somewhere that strives to be a destination resort. The party suggest that more but smaller buses would help solve many of the issues and also be more ecologically friendly. They could

also offer better links to the urbanisations which contains residents “who pay their taxes too” as well as being where many tourists stay on holiday. Regarding taxis this service could also be improved, possibly by granting extra tenders and licences.

Healthcare training for town’s young CREAMA, the local development agency which helps get people back into the workplace, is organising healthcare training in Denia and Benissa for some of the town’s youths. The

modules are aimed at residents aged between 18 and 30 who are not currently in employment. Elsewhere on the Marina Alta, Creama will also be offering Community

Management training sessions in Javea and Calpe. The registration period is now open; the local Creama offices have further details and are also where you can register.

“No Means No (apparently!)” Several mothers including myself who send our kids to a local Spanish primary school have been a bit perturbed,to say the least, by the incorporation of the “No Means No” into the recent school curriculum. For those of you who doń t know what the slogan “No Means No” means it has originated from many anti-rape campaigns the world over but has escalated here in Spain recently when judges ruled recently that an 18-year old girl who had been gang-raped at a Pamplona bull-running festival a few years ago had been “submissive”. The five in their 20s that had raped her (after knowing her for 7 minutes) contested that they construed her “wailing” as enjoyment. In fact she had been educated to not kick up a fussand she made a life-savingdecision that it she had fought back too hard then she would have wound up dead. She argued in court that her wails were the least that she could emanate given that she was being abused from every orifice; her vagina, her anus and her mouth. I personally am pretty sure that an 18-year-old would not enjoy any element of that kind of group sex, and I am pretty sure that a judge worth his salt should have come to that conclusion. The judge didń t, and the five have got off far more lightly than the Spanish wanted. Spanish women and men have been protesting about this crime and the inappropriately light prison sentence using the spoken sentence “No Means No”. Going back to how this heavy subject matter has creeped into our PRIMARY SCHOOLS one of my friends says “As a grown-up I object to this slogan being used in primary schools. I am pretty shocked by what happened to a young girl in Pamplona” says a mother. “But as a protective mother of children aged 11 and under, I really doń t want

them to be involved in any slogan connected to mass demonstrations about rape. I want them to know nothing about any volatile behavior in a machismo environment. I protect my under eleven year olds from watching the news. It should be MY choice when they learn about the truly evil people in the world, not the choice of teachers.” And I agree with this mum. I doń t let my 8-year old watch the news either.Once in a while I have showed her that Syrian children are desperate for food and shelter and African kids too. I have decided on my own that she needs to know that she is lucky. Going back to the poor 18-yearold that was raped. She was interrogated many times, and the boys were not. Allegedly. How is that fair? Her story against five?? The statistics of reporting rape

hundred percent. There should be “legally policed” welcome centres, not police stations, where women can go, and be dealt with by women only, when they have been raped or sexually abused. It s a bitter sweet thing for me ´ though, the word “no” in certain contexts. As I staggered out of the hospital in Ibiza where I had taken two days to give birth to my little baby, my Mum (she was quite a character) asked me a question. “Fiona” she demanded my attention, as always “Yes, Mum? What is it?” I asked. “Whó s the boss?” I was in a lot of pain. “Dunno, Mummy, who is the boss, Mummy?” She nailed me with an answer and I will never forget it. “You are the boss of her” she told me. “Never take “no” from her” she advised me. My mother was an awesome teacher of primary school kids and she taught

New venue for trade fair THE trade fair, “Denia Stock”, is to be held this weekend, 5 to 6 May in the Marina Alta capital. It has relocated from its previous home of Calle La Via due to traffic access changes and is now on Marques de Campo, Denia’s central shopping street. Organised by the Department of Commerce and the Creama Office the show runs from 10am to 9pm

on Saturday and 11am to 8pm on the Sunday. 89 shops and businesses are taking part this year with 76 stands on Marques de Campo and the rest operating from their own trading premises. Visitors will be able to buy or browse a wide variety of items including sports goods, children’s things, home décor, jewellery, petcare, accessories, clothes and food to name just a few.

New gym kit THE gymnasium which is part of Benissas indoor swimming pool complex has had four new items of equipment added after feedback from users. The new machines are for working on the lower limbs, something many pool-goers like to do as an accompaniment to swimming as part

of their fitness regime. The gymnasium management team said that personal training was one of the most in demand services and these additions reflected that. Other improvements at the centre include an upgrade of the disabled bathroom to allow it to fully comply with regulations.

A baby chimpanzee that had a very public arrival has sadly died unexpectedly at just ten days old. The chimp, of the endangered sub-species pan troglodytes verus, was born in full view of the public at Valencia’s

Bioparc in April. The apparently unforeseen event took the zoo staff by surprise as well and the video of the very public birth soon went viral on social media. However, although

seemingly healthy, veterinarians noticed that the little primate was not developing its mobility functions as expected. The baby was kept under close observation but sadly died last week. He was the first

offspring of breeding pair Moreno and Natalia and the body of the baby will be left in the enclosure to help the colony with their grieving process, a complex rite among the species.

Blood brothers

A special blood donation day organised by the Brotherhood of Jesus Nazareno in Javea at the end of April had a better than expected turn out with 69 people going along to donate. For various reasons only 60 of these could donate in the end but

the Health Councillor Pilar Zamora said this was still twice the number anticipated. There was also a prize draw for all donors which was won by Javier Valles, a regular donor who will be enjoying a free dinner for two at Javea’s Parador Hotel.

Under current health guidelines many British expatriates are not permitted to donate blood in Spain. However if you would like to help, check with your local health centre who hold up to date information on eligible donor groups and current guidelines.

We have all experienced pins and needles, usually in the hands, arms, legs and feet. Pins and needles manifest as a tingling, prickling or numbing sensation. It is not painful. Pins and needles is usually temporary, but can sometimes be long lasting (chronic).

Temporary pins and needles

• diabetes • vitamin B12 deficiency • a compressed ulnar nerve • carpal tunnel syndrome • a condition that damages the nervous system such as a stroke, multiple sclerosis or in extremely rare cases, a brain tumour • exposure to toxic substances – such as lead or radiation • certain types of medication – such as HIV medication, medication to prevent seizures (anticonvulsants), or some antibiotics • malnutrition where the body lacks important nutrients because of a poor diet • nerve damage caused by infection, injury or overuse – for example, a condition known as hand-arm vibration syndrome may be the result of regularly using vibrating tools • alcohol misuse • cervical spondylosis – the bones and tissues of the spine can wear down over time, leading to trapped nerves and occasionally pins and needles

Temporary pins and needles happens when pressure is applied to a part of the body cutting off the blood supply to the nerves. This in turn prevents the nerves from sending important signals to the brain. This is common during the night when you may ‘lie funny’ in bed. It can also When to see your GP be caused by wearing tight shoes or socks. The pins and needles subside once pressure is taken off the affected area. Most cases of pins and needles are temporary and the sensation disappears after the pressure is taken off the Other common reasons for temporary pins and needles affected area. However, always consult your family doctor if you include: • Raynaud’s disease – which affects the blood supply constantly have pins and needles or if it keeps recurring to certain areas of the body, such as the fingers and toes, as it may be a sign of a more serious underlying health and is usually triggered by cold temperatures or sometimes condition. anxiety or stress Treatment • hyperventilating (breathing too quickly) Treatment for chronic pins and needles depends on the cause. For example, if it’s caused by diabetes, treatment will focus on controlling blood glucose levels, if it is a mechanical problem the patient will be referred to an osteopath, if the cause is a vitamin B12 deficiency this can be easily corrected etc. The most important thing is for a Family Doctor to determine the cause then treat accordingly. Hanging Baskets etc

It should be obvious that, almost by definition, growing in containers is going to produce additional problems compared with growing in the open ground. Watering and feeding are the most obvious differences because of the relatively small amount of growing medium involved and the ability of the sun to reach the sides of the pot. Because it can also reach the bottom of the container, hanging baskets are particularly vulnerable. Any container plant needs more water and more food than its counterpart in the ground, and the needs are multiplied when water evaporates quickly. Generally speaking, bigger is better because it provides a greater reservoir for when things go a bit wrong.

It is a short-lived perennial and may last only a few years before fading away but can also be grown as an annual.

Obviously, a lot depends on the situation in which the container is sited. Pelargonium peltatum or Ivy-Leaved Geraniums

Ivy-leaved geraniums have a trailing growth habit and thrive in a south-facing position with full sun exposure. They bloom off and on throughout the year, producing flowers that can be single or double in form. Allow the top of the potting soil to dry before watering and pinch the stem tips occasionally to encourage more full, bushy growth. Because both stems and leaves are stiff and waxy,

they are more resistant to the dreaded Bronze butterfly than the, perhaps more spectacular, zonal types.
