HORROR A patient who fell out of the back of an ambulance when travelling at around 100 kmph on the AP-7 motorway near Ondara (Marina Alta). This week a driver who had been following the ambulance filed a denuncia, along with a photo of the vehicle which he took at the time. Mass evacuation after fire

FIRE crews ordered the evacuation of 40 people after a fire broke out on the ground floor of a three storey building in the Bahia de Xabia area. The property where the blaze started was occupied by three people and their dog at the time, although all escaped unhurt and no neighbours suffered any effects. Javea’s Local Police were first on the scene and they were soon joined by three vehicles from the Denia Fire Brigade who quickly got the incident under control. However the ground floor of the property was badly burnt.

Busy night for police TWO men are facing multiple charges after a series of incidents in Denia last Saturday night were linked to the pair. The most serious was what appeared to be the intentional running over of a National Police officer, who had been trying to stop the car which was being driven

Victory in mammogram fight

A Javea woman has won a two year battle to extend the breast cancer screening programme for women in the Valencia Community. Maria Ferrer fought specifically for people under the age of 45 with a family history of breast cancer to receive mammograms, something which currently starts at 45. Maria’s mother died of breast cancer at only 42 years old and Maria also had an early onset

She campaigned vigorously and collected over 200,000 signatures in support of the cause, which she submitted to the Valencian Generalitat as well as holding meetings with the Ministry of Health. This week they voted overwhelmingly in support of the proposal.

Maria and her family were present at the vote and she admitted to being “super nervous” but was overwhelmed with happiness after she saw nearly everyone raise their hands in favour. She later said “If only one person is saved by having an early mammogram, then I have won my battle.” Maria now plans to step back and spend more time on herself and her own family.

Bus blaze on AP7 A bus caused major traffic problems after it caught fire last Friday travelling on the AP-7 motorway in the Benissa municipality. blaze. The cause of the fire is not known and is under investigation. On the same day a fire crew from Sant Vicent del Raspeig had to rescue three women trapped in a car after an accident with a lorry near the Alicante town. All were hospitalised but their conditions are not thought to be serious.

New help centre opens

THE MABS Cancer Support Group has opened a centre on Javea’s Arenal to help local people with cancer. Residents Councillor Doris Courcelles attended the inauguration with a group of MABS workers and volunteers. Along with MABS President Jacqui Phillips she cut the ribbon to declare the new space open where it will help cancer sufferers and their family.

A group of 26 pupils and three teachers from Denia’s Maristas School recently spent a week in the Irish city of Kilkenny, in the Leinster province of the country. The trip was so that the students and teachers could immerse themselves in English for the week of their stay. However it was also a chance to learn more about this historic town in south-east Ireland such as its famous castle, cathedral and top level hurling team. The travellers stayed with Irish

families on the stay, attending English classes in the morning and then doing other activities in the afternoons. The Maristas de Denia School is committed to multilingualism and English is an important part of this,

with several subjects being taught in the language. The centre also has a native English speaker on its staff who helps different levels and ages of students with conversational English.

From the kitchen to the garden T HE Santa Maria Magdalene School in El Poble Nou de Benitatxell has installed a new composter to deal with bio-waste. The machine will be fed with leftovers from the school canteen and the end product will be compacted and used to fertilise the schools gardens. This is part of the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s promotion of ecology and serves to educate the children on

waste management and recycling. Long term the town hopes to turn itself into a benchmark for household and commercial recycling, said Environment councillor Manolo Segarra.

TWO dogs have been reported as abandoned in a house in Els Poblets (Marina Alta). It is believed that the petsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; owners had been squatting illegally in the property and when they were evicted left the animals behind. A local resident has reported the issue to the town hall, saying that the house is in a squalid condition, full of rubbish and dog excrement. It is hoped that the dogs can be moved to an animal shelter.

HE Xabia Folk 2018 is due to start on 20 April, offering a range of folk and traditional music over a fortnight of programming. The event starts next Friday with a performance by the group

Criatures at the Casa de Cultura, starting at 8pm. There is a gap until the next concert which features Spaniard Carmen Paris and Moroccan performer Nabyla Maan who together mix vocal styles from their

native countries. This is on a specially constructed stage in Plaza de la Constitucion, starting at 10.30pm on 4 May. The next day, Saturday 5 May, sees a double bill with the Quamlibet group performing on the Plaza de la Constitucion stage at 7pm followed by the Balkan Paradise Orchestra at 10.30. The festival

WTF ON THE BEACH?

was just pondering what to write about when a news story on the radio very kindly offered up some inspiration (along with a certain amount of perspiration). Benidorm will soon have free wifi on its beaches, a spokesperson from the Benidorm Ayuntamiento was boasting. And really good internet too. Checked by those lovely guys at Google. Well what a relief eh? No need to pack the buckets and spades or snorkels or those novels that friends have raved about. Everyone can lie on their towel and Tweet, Facebook and Instagram about the lovely holiday they are having with their beloved phone. The kids can watch The Little Mermaid or Shark´s Tale instead of having to actually pretend to be mermaids or sharks. Maybe I am over reacting (assuming that you have detected my sarcasm) but let´s face it for anyone who actually needs to send an urgent Whatsappwhilst on holiday there´s always a café with free wifi2 minutes from the beach. Benidorm Spotlight applauds the move as helping disabled people. “No longer any need to make your way to a bar that has wifi or be chained to your hotel. You can now head down to the beach with your mobile device (mobile phone or tablet) and hey presto! You’re online!” Is it just me, or is this not just a tad

patronising to disabled people? I don´t mean just the explanation of a mobile device, I mean the whole shebang. I am pretty sure that mostwheelchair users don´t struggle too much to get to bars along the flat streets of Benidorm (and surely more than any of us know what a mobile device is, as you and I know that we are not actually talking about wheel chairs here!) It is both sad and dangerous that we suffer this world of impatient instant gratification, being bombarded by technology and allowing it to happen to ourselves. If we can´t unplug at the beach then where can we? Just Tibetan monasteries? Many believe that fast communication makes our lives easier but it´s well documented that adults are suffering from stress, sleep loss and depression because of modern technology.Artificial light from TV and computer screens affects melatonin production and throws off circadian rhythms meaning we don´t sleep properly. Nor, in my opinion, do we socialise properly any more. Someone´s birthday? Slap a message on Facebook. Don´t call and actually find out how they are. I often have lunch with a friend Hugh Robertson who is a retired London corporate lawyer (he normally pays!) and is a writer of historical fiction (The Fool´s Crowns). Hughfeels that living in an instant world negates time for thinking things through. He remembers being a messenger after school and enjoying the camaraderie of face to face deliveries, and later onunwieldy Telex and Faxes. “The use of Fax gave

AFTER pledging their full support to help catch those responsible for the recent spate of dog poisonings in the area, the Benissa and Senija Guarda Rural have offered the use of drones to help with the search. The club has sent out a letter confirming “its absolute indignation and disgust for these actions” and has put itself at the disposal of the authorities for any help they may need. This includes a drone and thermal imaging camera, something they think could be crucial in catching the perpetrator. Spanish house price data published in March 2018 www.spanishpropertyinsight.com The SPI House Price Index Tracker plots the progress of the six mostwatched house price indices in Spain, and brings them together in the chart above. The following residential property price indices were released in March 2017 (all figures show year-on-year percentage change):

anything about local markets, but they do at least give us an idea of where we are in the property market cycle. It’s clear from the chart above that Spanish house prices are on the road to recovery, whichever index you choose.

Tinsa Spanish House Price Index

The Spanish house price index published by Tinsa – one of Spain’s biggest appraisal companies – also shows house price changes by area, with the big cities (mainly Barcelona and Madrid) up 5.9% in February, the Mediterranean coast up 4.4%, and the Balearic and Canary Islands up 6.8%. With house prices rising across the board, many Spaniards will now see property as a good investment again, These national indices don’t tell us which is likely to attract more buyers.

NUTS ABOUT LOS ALMENDR0S DEL MONTGO

o more stropping at the Mas y Mas fruit and veg section when all I find are rock-hard avocadoes for me! When I need my avocado urges sated and don´t have a week to wait until my purchases ripen I will head to the Los Almendros Del Montgo Restaurant on the Jesus Pobre road to feast on one of their starters “Avocado and Salmon Pie”. It´s not a pie at all, and I don´t want to give you too much of a spoiler but it is a very clever and delicious combination involving the perfect avocado. Another endearing “near-translation” on the menu is an “omelette at your taste” which sounds a bit like the omelette is going to salute you from the plate. But these teeny-tiny aberrations can be completely forgiven as this restaurant is close to perfection on many levels. I ate there last Sunday in the early evening with sunlight streaming into the main restaurant which has a beautiful dry-stone wall at one end, a wooden beamedroof cleverly covered in greenery and has a natural feeling beige and cream colour scheme. The combination whispered the

word “classy” as I sat down and admired the good quality plates and modern wine glasses. Vegetarians will be pleased to know that a separate menu is provided so not only is there plenty of choice but those avoiding meat and or fish don´t even have to read about them. The menu is very varied in terms of prices; it would be easy to push the boat out here for a special occasion but also very possible to dine here economically. They offer a “special menu” of luxurious dishes for 20.50 but also a “menu del dia” for only 14.50 which has an impressive 9 starters and 9 mains to choose from and includes bread, wine, dessert and coffee. There is also a comprehensive tapas menu and I was astonished to see that (minimum 2 persons as normal) “paella mixta” here is only 9.00 per person! Beat that in a lovely environment if you dare! Firm favourites here are the lamb chops (finger lickingly fabulous), duck with orange and the sole stuffed with prawns.

KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY The restaurant is run by Jose Moises,

who devotedly runs the front of house, with his wife Encarni who is the very talented chef. Jose Moises´ parents set up the restaurant in 1971, so Jose has actually been working there since he was 16 but so far shows no signs of flagging, spending plenty of time explaining the menu to guests. The clientele is very international, and the waitresses speak perfect English.

NUTS ABOUT LAS ALMENDRAS

The restaurant is named after the almond trees, as previously the surrounding area was famous for almond terraces which

have now largely gone. There are several dishes on the menu with sauces made with “las almendras”– almonds. Note, Spanish students, that the nuts are feminine in Spanish whilst the nurturing trees are masculine .Interesting! In fact almonds aren´t nuts. Yep, that was news to me too. Officially speaking they are actually seeds. And very good for you. Almonds are a high-fat food, but they are largely a monounsaturated fat which helps to protect the heart by maintaining levels of (good) HDL cholesterol. They are a great source of fibre and protein, and vitamin E, selenium, zinc, calcium, magnesium and B vitamins. Good for your heart and your brain. Almonds do contain a teeny bit of cyanide but you would have to makes someone eat 50 ounces in one day to kill them, so not the easiest murder weapon! Why don’t squirrels have any friends? Because they drive everyone nuts. I have been wondering why it is that we so rudely call people “nuts” when they act a little crazy. Etymology Online contends that “nuts was influenced by the metaphoric application of nut to refer to

one’s head. To be off one’s nut dates from 1861 as an expression for “to be insane”. Of note: nuts to mean “crazy” predates the usage of the same to mean testicles (1846 and 1915, respectively).” A contributor to Etymology Online has added “Perhaps it also means people who are unpredictable with a “nutter” being the type of person who might unexpectedly “nut you” (give you a Glasgow kiss).” Speaking of violence, and of bad taste now, “NUTS” is apparently a military term standing for “Neurologically Unfit To Serve”. Mmm. I see what some twit did there. I´d like to send him a cyanide omelette“ at his taste.” I cannot recommend Los Almendros Del Montgo enough. My family will now be visiting once a week. The restaurant is open Mon to Sat 6 30 pm to 10 45 (closed Wednesdays) and Sundays 1 pm until 3 then 7 30 to 10.45. Tel 965 790 104. NB be aware of the speed limit on the Carretera Jesus Pobre. The Pego Golf Society Meeting April 10th 2018 We had 34 players today in nice weather playing a Yellow Ball Competition. This is a format that can test friendships to the limit, depending on who loses the yellow ball. We had two guests today, Arthur Tear and Peter Twine. The winning team was Carla Chaszczewski, Dave O’Connor, Michel Grin and Stella Fox with a great score of 162 points. Second was the team of Shaun O’Gorman, Donna Green, Keith Price and Jim Hayward with a very good score of 146 points. The rest of us looked on in envy as most of us lost the yellow ball sometime during the competition.

With such fierce competition amongst the Costa Blanca bowling community it is extremely unusual for three top tournaments to be won by the same people. But this is exactly what Paul and Jan Brown, Chris Evans and Clive English have managed to achieve during the 20172018 bowling season. Their impressive series of wins in the Javea Saturday Triples, Benitachell Saturday Rinks and

the El Cid Friday Pairs has seen them enter the record books as the first to manage this feat. Each tournament took place over several months and with help from some of their fellow team mates they won all three competitions with a game to spare, but the one common denominator was that these four bowlers were in all three winning teams.

Benitachel Bowls Successful Year! Benitachell Bowls Club has achieved many successes this year. Our Berleen Team have won the League this season the first time for eight years. They were just one point ahead of local rivals Javea Green. The first game was at home against Bonalba back in October 2017 and the season ended with an away game at San Miguel on Wednesday 28th March 2018. A total of sixteen games have been played with ten wins and one draw, how vital that one point for the draw proved to be! They used twelve different players during the season to make the team of four required for each match. They were John & Lynne Avey, Bob & Margaret

Bailey, Dave Buttell, Richard Chamberlain, Vivian Erridge, Iris & Richard Gardiner, Viv Humble Rebecca Langan and Lynda Warnes. Further successes were the Northern League Championship, the Premier 20-20 and some of our members have also managed the semi-finals of the Javea Green Easter Trips and the semi finals of the Finca Guila trips. Sunday saw a large turn out for the Last Man Standing (many of us ladies feel is should be last person standing) two ladies made the finals but the game finished with Alex Fisher winning with Rod Warnes as runner-up. An entertaining and competitive morning enjoyed by all
