DODGY MUSSELS THE Spanish Food Agency has traced around 40 cases of food poisoning to mussels consumed in a hotel in Javea. Although two people were hospitalised, all those affected have recovered but new cases are still possible, said the Ministry of Health. The shellfish have been on sale to the general public and the Food Agency has given details of what they believe is the product responsible for the outbreak. The frozen mussels are the Star Polar brand

and labelled “Mussel Half Shell Super” with a batch number of 010DOP18, a production date of 01/01/18 and a consume by date of January 2020. It is recommended, unsurprisingly, that if you have this product in your house that you don’t eat them. The strain of infection has been identified as the norovirus - sometimes called the winter vomiting bug -which can be particularly serious for the elderly, very young, infirm and pregnant women.

Nazi victim’s tribute

DENIA is organising tributes to four local men, three of whom perished in Nazi concentration camps in World War II. Denia citizens Asensio Rosello, Jaime Vengut, Jose Grimalt and Vicente Bolufer were staunch defenders of the Republican cause during the Spanish Civil War. When their faction lost the war they fled to France, fleeing persecution.

However once France fell into German hands they once again found themselves on the wrong side and ended up in confinement in the notorious Mauthausen and Gusen concentration camps. Only Vicente Bolufer survived the camps, being released by the allies in 1945 at the age of 31. He remained in France, as a return to the fascist led Spain would almost

certainly have led to his death or re-internment. He was eventually reunited with his family when they joined him in his adopted country but sadly he died in 1956 aged just 42, never having returned to the city he loved. However his children ensured that his ashes were scattered in a plot in Denia. The tributes being planned include on 27 April a photo

exhibition of the AuschwitzBirkenau death camp at the Casa de la Cultura which will be on display until 11 May. Also on 27 April there will be a lecture by Adrian Blas Minguez about the four Denia citizens involvement in both wars. This will be at 8pm in the Casa de la Cultura auditorium while Mr Minguez will also be holding talks with local students on the subject.

Finally at midday on 29 April a plaque will be unveiled as a tribute to the men in Denia’s municipal cemetery. There will be a musical tribute by local musician Jaume Ginestar and speeches by surviving relatives of the men. The events are to mark the 80th anniversary of the Civil War, something Mayor Vicent Grimalt has said “it is our duty to remember”.

Womans Lucky Escape, after falling from ambulance ...From Front Page When he stopped he saw that it was a young woman lying in the road, badly injured but breathing faintly. Mass evacuation after fire

by Matthew Richards

FIRE crews ordered the evacuation of 40 people after a fire broke out on the ground floor of a three storey building in the Bahia de Xabia area. The property where the blaze started was occupied by three people and their dog at the time, although all escaped unhurt and no neighbours suffered any effects. Javea’s Local Police were first on the scene and they were soon joined by three vehicles from the Denia Fire Brigade who quickly got the incident under control. However the ground floor of the property was badly burnt.

a stretcher, ignoring the driver’s call for the police and saying that the fall was the woman’s fault and that “she was crazy”. The Ministry of Health has opened an investigation into the incident and has said that the woman suffers from a mental illness. The Ministry also said she was accompanied although it is not clear how she left the vehicle or why this seemed to go unnoticed.

Nine thousand call outs for police JAVEA’S Local Police by Simon Russell force has presented a full breakdown of their workload incidents a day. Of the 8,779 in 2017, with their services cases they handled 43% were being called on almost 9,000 administrative, 20% involved times last year, around 25 traffic, 16% welfare and 21%

matters of public safety and security. Regarding manpower there are now 70 trained officers who have access to a fleet of seven cars and three motorcycles.

These vehicles are all leased which means they are always in good working condition and have a quick turnaround for any upgrades. The marine unit has a jet-ski and new

motor boat for inshore patrols regarding fishery issues, environmental issues and other nautical matters. Last year also saw the implementation of a new

mediation service for issues such as disputes between neighbours. 65 people used this service and 43 of these cases have been resolved to date.

Spain's most polluted river In a recent survey by the group Ecologists in Action, the river Jucar has been given the unwanted title of Spain’s most polluted river, something many Valencianos are unhappy about. THE 500km River Jucar has its source in Castilla La Mancha, but much of it runs through the Valencian Community, terminating in Cullera near Valencia City.

by Simon Russell

The survey was based on rivers that were analysed for 57 pesticides; 34 were present in the Jucar, 22 of these now banned. Farmers are concerned that reports such as this may damage their sales of fruit and vegetables in an ever more ecologically aware world. Valencia’s Tourism Department is also angry at

this labelling of one of the Communities great natural tourist attractions. Farmers insist that they follow regulations regarding pesticides and either someone else is responsible or the data is flawed. As for the use of approved chemicals if these were banned, making all crops effectively organic, would the consumer be willing to pay the extra costs?

Two people caught on camera dancing on moving car by Simon Russell

A video has gone viral on social media which shows girls dancing on the roof of a moving car in Javea. The vehicle is filmed driving along Calle Virgen

del Angeles to Denia and for a distance the youths performed various dance moves on the roof of the BMW 4x4. The footage was shot by a local resident

who was driving behind the BMW who asked the online community if he should denounce those taking part. Obviously the practice is extremely dangerous and,

although there has been no official comment from them yet, the authorities may well look into the case. The vehicles number plates are clearly visible in the video.

Fossils on display A Javea woman has won a two year battle to extend the breast cancer screening programme for women in the Valencia Community. Maria Ferrer fought specifically for people under the age of 45 with a family history of breast cancer to receive mammograms, something which currently starts at 45. Maria’s mother died of breast cancer at

only 42 years old and Maria also had an early onset of the disease although thankfully she is now cured. She campaigned vigorously and collected over 200,000 signatures in support of the cause, which she submitted to the Valencian Generalitat as well as holding meetings with the Ministry of Health. This week they

voted overwhelmingly in support of the proposal. Maria and her family were present at the vote and she admitted to being “super nervous” but was overwhelmed with happiness after she saw nearly everyone raise their hands in favour. She later said “If only one person is saved by having an early mammogram, then I have won

Death Slide

THE company that runs the zip wire in Venezuela where a Valencian resident died earlier this year has hit further controversy after two more people died on the ride this month. To make matters worse, the attraction was not even supposed to be in operation as the Venezuelan authorities had ordered it be closed while the death of Nathaly Salazar in January was investigated. The latest tragedy occurred on 3 April when tourist Milushka Pacheco and assistant guide Vincer

Reyes were killed. The ride is situated in the jungle treetops near the tourist trap Cuzco and is popular with tourists because of its views of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Apparently it was common knowledge that it was still being operated. despite warnings of it being unsafe, after this latest accident two individuals have been detained. Nathaly was missing for several days and, despite

extensive media coverage, the zip wire company did not admit any responsibility initially. When it became clear due to CCTV that the last trace of her had been with them, two operators admitted she had died on the ride and said that they had dumped her body in a river out of fear of consequences, They also both confirmed that they broke

her phone with a stone when it started ringing. Nathaly’s family are asking Peruvian authorities to look further into the case, particularly whether her death was a tragic accident or something more sinister.

Sculpture coming home A giant sculpture by a renowned local artist that used to be a landmark in Calpe may be returning to its original site. “Cosmos 62” by Andreu Alfaro was created in 1960 and located near what is

now the N-332 northern access. This was part of a development owned by Jose Huget and, as he also owned the statue, he opted to sell it to the Institut Valencia d’Art Modern (IVAM) about 30 years ago. Calpe council have been trying to bring back the statue which, according to them and Alfaro’s heirs, was always created with the Calpe backdrop in mind such as the iconic Ifach. Sources have said that the IVAM are open to the idea of returning the piece which, if it does come home, will be placed close to its original site which is now a petrol station.

Franco lives on THE Paternina School in Calpe is one of 80 across Spain that is still named after prominent figures in the Franco era dictatorship. All of these are being sent letters by the Ministry of Education urging them to consider altering their names, which they say pays undeserved homage to Franco era figures. The Paternina School was

by Simon Russell

inaugurated in 1946 by Jose Maria Paternina, A l i c a n t e ’s governor between 1944 and 1948. Partly his

position was due to his active participation in the Spanish Civil War and he was seen as being largely instrumental in the introduction of fascism to

the

province. When the school moved from its original site in 2009 many saw that as a chance to change its name, but in the end it stuck with its controversial title.

Road death worries

Twenty Five people were killed on the Valencian roads in the first quarter of this year, an 80% increase on 2017 and the highest rise in any Spanish region.

Some people are blaming the lack of spending on road infrastructure for the rise, with the Valencian highways agency running a spending deficit of an

estimated €270 million. The body has spent around €36 million a year on roads over the last nine years; up to about €30 million a year less than they calculate

they needed to properly maintain the road network. This in turn leads to an on-going deterioration of the communities roads, compromising safety.

During many years of working in television “compliance” lawyers used to visit us production teams and remind us about the swear words we shouldń t permit on TV and how we shouldń t promote products, ie mention sellotape. Or be offensive. Funnily enough, the last time a compliance lawyer turned up to preach to one of my team, my naughty comedian boyfriend was the main star of the lawyeŕ s show reel, and the lawyer clocked him at the back of the room, and didn’t have the nerve to press play. Perhaps because of this background the lack of policing of the internet really bugs me. Last year You Tube displayed a film clip of a suicide victim in Japan. A journalist using traditional media could not have done so. You Tube ignored its own stated guidelines against gory or graphic content despite public outcry and ultimately it was the original creator that removed the clip. The fact that the French President recently declared that giants like Twitter, Google, Facebook and their ilk were too powerful for any single state to tackle is pretty chilling. Newspapers and other media have always been responsible for their content alongside the actual author. ‘If Facebook’s products are free, how does Facebook make its money?’

Can it be right to allow criminal activities such as bomb making or obscene images of human torture and degradation to be published without any responsibility?

84 year old Senator asked ‘If Facebook’s products are free, how does Facebook make its money?’ The answer delivered with condescension was “Senator, we sell ads.” He thought that made him look innocent, but actually this is not the case. Quite the reverse, if you also sell information about your customers to politicians. Then another apparently simple question was posed to Zuckerberg “Would you be comfortable sharing with us the name of the hotel you stayed in last night?” Slam dunk – he squirmed. As he ducked the question. Given that Facebook knew the precise whereabouts of literally millions of its users the previous night his avoiding that simple question gave the lie to all his other glib answers. He would not put himself in the shoes of the very people who had made him rich and powerful beyond belief. Then came his statement which in time to come may be seen as the defining moment when the unfettered actions of the internet giants began to be tamed. Mark Zuckerberg admitted that he was

Hate speech is illegal across Europe so how can it be acceptable online? Says Hugh “So last week we saw the founder of Facebook sitting on a booster cushion being grilled about the very ethos of his fortune making baby. That Mark Zuckerberg looks so like a teenage class swot only added to the bathos and irony as he was caught up in questions many of which seemed utterly naive particularly when set against his smooth answers crafted and instilled in him by his cohort of sharp suited 1000$ an hour attorneys and PR people.” Zuckerberg looked patronising as an

We may never know whether he became rattled under the relentless pressure of the hearing and ‘lost the plot’ or if there is a plan to fundamentally change the business model of Facebook. However by that simple statement he put Facebook and to an extent himself into the legal shoes of all publishers. Will that mean that the other giants of the web all find themselves having to take a responsibility that surely must be theirs? Fingers crossed. fiona@weekender.news

Schoots was not home at the time and witnesses have said that the animals were almost uncontrollable when he was not around. As well as the state prosecution the defendant is facing a private prosecution and compensation of €175,000 is being requested. GARDENING ON THE COSTA BLANCA 35 Going back to the concept of ‘beneficial insects’, an important aspect of organic gardening is biocontrol. This employs the use of beneficial insects, as well as companion

planting, to naturally repel or control pest populations. As chemical pesticides are indiscriminate, they tend to kill beneficial insects, as well as the pests. This can cause an

imbalance between the number of pests and that of their natural predators, leading to waves of different pests invading the now insect-free area. Another important point to

for more information.

take into consideration when deciding whether to use chemicals or natural solutions is that large numbers of insects are starting to show signs of immunity against com-

mercial pesticides. Some insects, such as the Parasitic Wasps below are produced on an industrial scale, for release in fields and greenhouses as a pest control.

Parasitic wasps (Hymenoptera)

Hoverflies (Diptera)

Ladybirds (Coleoptera)

These wasps of the family Ichneumonidae do not sting. They lay their eggs on or in other insects. Although their life cycle is gruesome - after the egg hatches, the parasitoid larva eats the host alive before emerging as an adult - these insects have an important role to play. They kill enormous numbers of garden pests, from brassica-munching

Often confused with wasps because of their similar yellow and black colouring. However, unlike wasps, hoverflies also do not sting (nor do they have long antennae or a bulgy abdomen with a wasp waist). More than 85 species have been found in a single garden. The adult hoverfly feeds on nectar and pollen and their larvae are voracious

Ladybirds are known to everyone - with regard to the name, it is generally considered likely that bird simply refers to the insect’s winged nature and flying abilities while lady apparently refers to the seven spots of the most common species in Europe which were popularly supposed to symbolize the seven pains of the Virgin Mary. (The Americans call them ladybugs but, technically, they are not bugs either!) These beetles are carnivores, feeding almost exclusively on aphids (green and black fly)

When they hatch, the ladybird larvae will eat up to 5,000 aphids before they mature. A ladybird can live up to 3 years. Its distinctive shell is often red or orange, and the number of spots can vary from 2 to 18.

Spanish home sales rise 18% in February as market recovery continues www.spanishpropertyinsight.com There were 37,412 Spanish home sales inscribed in the Land Register in February, and 41,480 if you include homes subsidised by the Government, known as VPO, all according to the latest figures from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), based on sales inscribed in the Land Registry. Home sales have grown by double digits in most months since March 2014, when the Spanish housing market recovery started. That said, sales are still down by 44% compared to the peak year of 2007. Sales in the boom years were exaggerated and

unsustainable, so not a normal benchmark, but there still looks like room for more growth. Bear in mind these figures lag are based on sales inscribed in the Land Register, not sales completed in the month. As such they lag the market by a few months. More timely figures from the Association of Spanish Notaries for home sales that took place in February were up 2.7%. New home and resale transactions were up 17% and 16% respectively in February, showing that the recover is now firing on both pistons, having relied almost exclusively on resales

between the start of the recovery in 2013 and May last year. New home sales have increased by double digits almost every month for the last year, driven by the recovery in demand for new homes in Spain. Looking at the evolution of sales by region with a focus on areas that attract foreign buyers in significant numbers, year to date sales have increased strongly almost everywhere except Extremadura (where foreign demand is not a big part of the picture) and Catalonia, where the constitutional crisis and political uncertainty are discouraging foreign buyers. Sales

were up 59% in Castellรณn province, home to the Costa del Azahar, in what looks like the first signs of recovery in a coastal market that has suffered the crisis

longer and harder than most. The overall picture is one of surging sales in most areas of Spain that attract foreigners in significant numbers, with the exception

of the Catalan provinces of Barcelona, Girona, and Tarragona. But even in those regions sales were positive, despite the political turbulence.

The Member's Golf Society

Pego Golf Society Stableford Competition

Captain´s day at La Marquesa. A full complement of members prepared themselves to do battle with the never ending cold wind on Captain´s day at La Marquesa. The course was found to be playing a little on the difficult side especially the greens, however 2 members did birdie a couple of the par 3´s to share the €58 resulting in only one member winning an N.T.P. As the Captain had lots to organise in his hast to get to the first tee, he forgot to give the Vice-Captain the N.T.P.´s for the back 9! Of course here at La Marquesa we always begin from tee 1 and tee 10. In the clubhouse later he put the blame for this fairly and squarely on our Vicecaptain´s shoulders, saying that she should have asked him for them!! He didn´t shout this out loud because our Vice-captain´s partner is a Viking of 2m tall!! We always celebrate our Captain´s day with a meal (paid for from Society funds) and present the Trophies to the winners of our annual competitions. The results and photos of which can be found on our website. The meal was of the quality that

we have now come to expect from the clubhouse restaurant and no one was disappointed. After all of the prizes had been presented the Captain decided to give away our stock of alcohol to all of those members who had not won a prize. Well done John we can now begin our new year with a new stock. Our prizes for the coming season will be taking on a new look so members will need to keep a sharp eye on what they might win. Results: N.T.P. K. Houpalahti hole 15, he and M. Skipperud also shared the 2´s pot. Bronze cat: 3rd L. Holmberg 30, 2nd M. Myhrvold 32, 1st M. Skipperud 37, Silver cat: 3rd O. Rong 34, 2nd A. Rickers 35, 1st D. Sullivan 35 L/H. Gold cat: N. Spaniol 30, 2nd K. Persson 33, 1st K. Aasebo 35. Overall winner for Captain´s day: M. Skipperud 37 points. Keep up to date with what where we are playing and the latest information about our Society by logging onto www.tmgs.org or our Facebook page TMGSGOLF. On the morning when we were due to play golf at Oliva Nova, we were treated to a wonderful day of warm sunshine and gentle breezes to play golf. We were playing a Stableford competition, and the 39 members, were joined by three guests and Jim Hayward, Chris Andersen and Jim Keaveney. The competition itself was played with two divisions for handicap In the competition, the results for Division 1 were as follows:- 1st Place Richard Vass 39 Points playing off 8.9 Handicap. 2nd Place Malcolm Wise 37 Points playing off 9.7 Handicap, 3rd Place Dave O’Conner 36 Points playing off 16.2 Handicap Results for Division 2 were as follows; 1st Place Paul Trigwell 34 Points playing off 20.4 Handicap, 2nd Place Keith Price

33 Points playing off 22.2 Handicap, 3rd David Phillips 33 Points playing off 31.2 Handicap Well played to Richard Vass, with an excellent score of 39 Points. Nearest the pin at Hole No 5 with their second shot was Malcolm Wise with 0.42 meters, and at hole number 16, nearest the pin was Martin Gates with 3.34 meters. There were only two members with a two today and they were Richard Vass and Ken Miller The Balls in the water competition, was won today by Stella Fox, and the amount of balls in the water this week was 109. In the match play, the tie between John Evans and Martin Gates finished “All Square” for the second time, so they must play a third time next week.

Players Needed For Calpe Bowls Group

We are a small bowls group that play at the ‘Colina Club’ Calpe. We are looking for new members to join us - we are not a large club and play for the fun of the game, we do not play tournament games or in a league but are a fun happy group

that play twice a week - it could be 3 times if we had more members. If anyone is interested in further information or where we are located to come and see us - please ring Joy on 669213524 or Julia on 628405112

Pego Golf Society Yellow Ball We had 34 players today in nice weather playing a Yellow Ball Competition. This is a format that can test friendships to the limit, depending on who loses the yellow ball. We had two guests today, Arthur Tear and Peter Twine. The winning team was Carla Chaszczewski, Dave O’Connor, Michel Grin and Stella Fox with a great score of 162 points. Second was the team of Shaun O’Gorman, Donna Green, Keith Price and Jim Hayward with a very good score of 146 points. The rest of us looked on in envy as most of us lost the yellow ball sometime during the competition.

Nearest The Pin on Hole 5, second shot was Simon Fox with 3.2m and on Hole 16 was Malcolm Sharp with 3.5m There were two twos today, Roger Brown and Dave O’Connor but as neither had put into the pot they went away empty handed, the winner with a card draw being Rob Westlands. Balls in the Water today totalled 93, correctly guessed by John Evans. There was one Matchplay today and Terry Langley beat Bill Pike one up. Next week we have a Singles Stableford competition, any guests wishing to play, subject to handicap, contact Penny Barden on pegohandicapsec@gmail.com
