MOUNTING ANGER

PROTEST organisers claim that 400 people took to the streets of La Zenia over poor services on the Orihuela Costa. Last Friday’s demonstration was organised by La Zenia Citizen’s Movement, backed up by local associations, with protestors

by ALEX TRELINSKI

calling for the resignation of Orihuela’s Partido Popular mayor, Emilio Bascuñana. Movement leader, Felix Arenas, said that the Orihuela Costa was the poor relation of the municipality, with the bulk

of budgets going to the Orihuela City area. A large number of demonstrators were British and German, with placards written in Spanish and English, chastising Orihuela council for broken promises and asking where local tax revenues are being spent.

The march from Cala Bosque beach went to La Zenia roundabout on the N-332, with some protestors trying to block the road, but that attempt was quickly stopped by the presence of Guardia Civil and local police officers.

Investment Choices – where should you begin? Three main investing are:

possibilities

when

• making deposits; • buying fixed interest securities; and • buying equities. Each must bear a relatively stable rate of return relationship to the other for the economy to function. Let’s look at how they compare.

Cash Deposits

By Tracy Storer

Senior Partner Chorus Financial The world of investing can be very complex and confusing. Making the right investment choices however is absolutely paramount to ensuring your long term financial goals can be met. Most people seek a professional Financial Adviser or a Discretionary fund manager to select and manage their investments, but it is always good (and sometimes interesting) to getting a better understanding of the main areas of investing.

Deposits generally yield less than fixed interest securities for a similar degree of risk, and rarely achieve much real growth over time once tax is taken into account, but funds can be accessed more easily.

Fixed interest securities Fixed interest securities generally yield lower overall returns than equity investments, but have higher returns than deposits; however, they will rarely beat inflation by a significant amount. They tend to be lower risk than equities.

Equities

Equity investments will generally achieve returns that are higher than both fixed interest securities and cash deposits

over the longer term. The dividend yield on equities is, however, usually low compared to the yield on fixed interest securities, but both dividends and share prices have the potential to grow over time to compensate. There may be a higher level of risk.

is almost certain to have repercussions in the others, i.e. a reduction in interest rates could encourage a rise in both fixed interest and equity values, but lower returns from deposits.

Different Roles

There is, therefore, a fixed hierarchy of returns that is unlikely to be breached for any substantial period. In assessing the choices that are available, the following points should also be considered: Investors’ money tends to move to those areas where it will achieve the best results, in relation to both the risk that is involved and how long investors are prepared to tie up their funds. There are separate financial markets in each of the main types of investments (cash deposits, fixed interest securities and equities). However, a change in one market, such as an interest rate change,

ABANDON SHIP!

Two British families escaped uninjured after a one-million-euro luxury motorboat hit rocks off Cala de Portixol in Javea on Sunday afternoon. The skipper of the 19-metre-long boat, named only as Jason, said that everybody on board, including two children, got “very scared” when the vessel struck the rocks, some 250 metres from the shore of La Barraca beach at around 4.00 pm. “It all happened in a matter of minutes”, added Jason, as the holidaymakers were rescued by a jet ski and boat manned by the Cruz Roja and the local police. “We heard a large bang, and we went below to see the cabins filling with water very quickly”. The two families were forced to leave their personal effects,

including their mobile phones, on the boat, which then sank. Once ashore at La Barraca, the six-strong group were looked after by the owners of a local bar, who helped them dry out their clothes, and supplied a phone so that Jason could call the authorities at Dénia Marina, where the boat had been moored, in addition to notifying the insurance company. The boat was said to be three-years-old, with the skipper Jason, reported to be an experienced navigator who knows the local waters well. A salvage company was commissioned on Monday to deal with the sunken vessel, with concerns over possible pollution, since the boat had up to a thousand litres of diesel in the fuel tank.

SIX ARRESTED FOR TRAVELLING ON FALSE DOCUMENTS

In a week which saw the first drop in passenger figures at Alicante Airport in six years, specialist Border Security officers arrested six people illegal passports. The detainees, who entered the country on flights from different countries, were of different ages, failed to convince the agents, trained in spotting forged documents, that their passports were genuine. Border control officials are aware that people try to take advantage of increases in passenger traffic at this time of year to attempt to enter the country illegally, so more of the specially trained staff are put n place during the peak months. Alicante-Elche airport registered a 2% decrease in year on year passenger numbers during the month of July, the first negative figure for more than six years. A fall in number, of over

by Andy Mansell

10,000 travellers saw July’s figure reach 1,598,795, a fall of 1.8% on the same figures last year. The figures echo those of hotels, apartments, campsites and other tourist facilities in Benidorm, which have also seen a dip in fortunes during the same period.

As visitor numbers from the UK show the most notable losses, tourist officials believe the hot weather experienced during the early part of the summer encouraged travellers to abandon plans to fly abroad and instead remain closer to home for their annual holiday. However, despite the drop in July, annual figures still show a positive trend, as

the figures from AENA, the airport operator, revealed 7,919,047 passengers used the facility during the first seven months of the year, which represents an increase of 1.1% in the number of passengers compared to the same period of 2017 and the airport remains the fifth busiest in Spain calculated on passenger numbers.

Festival horror

OVER 300 people were injured, five seriously, after a section of wooden platform collapsed at an urban sports and music festival in northern Spain on Sunday night. It had been packed with people watching a rap artist at the two-day O Marisquiño event in the north-west city of Vigo, in Galicia. Witnesses reported scenes of panic as people - many of them teenagers tried to scramble to safety, with some falling into the sea. Several emergency teams attended to the injured, and divers were sent into the sea to check that no-one was trapped beneath the

by Alex Trelinski

structure. The incident happened shortly before midnight on Sunday as a crowd was listening to the Mallorcan rap artist Reis B. According to eyewitnesses, the wooden platform gave way during the first song of the concert as Rels B, who had just started his performance, told the crowd to jump. It is not clear whether the platform collapsed because there were too many people on it, or because the structure itself was weak, or whether other factors were involved. O Marisquiño is a free

outdoor festival that takes place in Vigo every August,

which is attended by some 160 thousand visitors.

Water shortages hit the Marina Baixa

The prolonged period of extreme temperatures combined with a lack of rain across the Alicante Province have caused water supply problems for two areas around Altea recently. Residents living in the inland mountain village of Tarbena have will have a restricted overnight service between the hours of 22.00h and 07.00h from this coming Sunday August 19th, whilst those residing in the13,000 homes on the exclusive Altea Hills development have been advised not to drink or use tap water for cooking purposes. Tarbena town hall warned its residents of the impending

by Andy Mansell

cuts in supply, through a social media announcement last week. The overnight cuts will affect both properties within the town and those in the surrounding rural areas. The reasons given were purely due to a lack of water in the Murtawell which serves the town, owing to a lack of rain in recent weeks and the extra usage caused by summer visitors, which double the population of the municipality. The cuts come only days after homes were left without water last week following an

electrical fault, which took three days to rectify. Angry business owners of the municipality have complained that their livelihoods are being affected, even though a proposed plan to transfer water from another well six kilometres away, Picassaries are halfway to completion. Meanwhile, the situation in the Altea Hills Urbanisation has left homeowners and residents complaining bitterly about the service offered by their water supplier Apobersa, as the problems of contaminated tap water occurs most summers. They have already been

experiencing water cuts and been prohibited from using tap water to fill their swimming pools. They say the situation is unacceptable, as they pay their taxes and IBI just like the rest of the population, but the problems only seem to affect them, accusing the Altea council of looking the other way, whilst a 2.7 million projected plan to connect the development to the mains water supply sits on the table. One member of the residents association said “All we are asking for is that we can open a tap and water comes out for consumption, just like in the rest of Altea”

Albir Fiesta Starts Friday

Crowds of partygoers are expected to pack in toAlbir’s shady Eucalyptus Park this weekend, for the annual summer fiestas which begin on Friday August 18th. For the duration of the fiestas, which end on Sunday, the park is completely taken over by the dozens of ‘penyas’ or social clubs who are allocated a few square feet each within the park to make their own. A total of around 41 penyas with approximately 750 associated members, including 120 minors

by Andy Mansell

are expected to take part in this years event. Organisers, encouraged by a good weather forecast are looking forward to welcoming a bumper crowd of residents and tourists to the three days of activities. Friday’s inauguration party includes a performance by folk group The Boys of the City and continues with music from Ivan Deejay. On Saturday, apetanque

championship will be held at the Retirement and Pensioners Club of l’Albir, aquatic attractions set up for the little ones on ÓscarEsplá Avenue, a Flower Power party will take place at the Eucalyptus Park, and a scary mascletá nocturnal organised by the Ricasa pyrotechnics will bring a touch of drama to the Albir market car park continuing with live music from the Gamma Live orchestra and, finally, a foam party with DJ Jes Set takes place back in the Eucalyptus park.

Browser blackmail

THE NATIONAL POLICE have warned about a big blackmail plot which looks to expose web users’ porn site history unless they cough up to two and a half thousand euros. Blackmailers are sending emails to their targets in which they reveal victims’ personal passwords and claim their computers have been hacked. ‘They claim to be in possession of personal intimate pictures or videos obtained through the computer’s webcam when the user was visiting pornographic sites,’ the National Police

by Alex Trelinski

said in a statement. They then demand payment in bitcoin or other virtual currencies within 24 hours to stop them from publishing them. Sums of between 350 and two and a half thousand euros are being asked for by the blackmailers, as they threaten to send videos to families of their marks. The National Police say they are getting around a hundred complaints a day, and that the demands should be ignored as they are a bluff, especially since no videos exist because the computers were not hacked in the first place.

Monday shaker

THE MOST powerful earthquake to hit Alicante Province in 58 years struck on Monday afternoon, with the epicentre between Albatera and Crevillente. The tremor, which happened at 4.40 pm, lasted for 20 seconds and measured four points three on the Richter Scale, and was felt across a large part of Alicante Province, as well as the adjoining Murcia region. Experts say that it was the fourth largest quake in the area since 1919, but because of its 11-kilometre depth, no structural damage was caused. Besides being felt in the immediate

area including locations like Almoradi, San Fulgencio, Benferri, Orihuela, Dolores and Callosa, the tremor reached areas like Elche, Villena, Sant Joan, El Campello, Aspe, and Santa Pola. Valencian emergency services say that got around a hundred phone calls concerned about the quake, which

was also felt in Alicante’s Gran Via shopping centre. As a means of comparison, the earthquake that caused destruction in the Murcia town of Lorca back in May 2011, measured 4.5 on the Richter Scale, followed an hour later by a strong aftershock an hour later of 5.1. Those quakes, however, were just four kilometres below ground.

Trend Reversed ALICANTE-ELCHE airport has seen the first drop in passenger numbers over an annual July to July period, since 2012. After many consecutive months of increasing growth, the facility at El Altet logged a drop of just over two per cent last month, compared to figures for July 2017, with one point six million passengers using the airport. Over the first seven months of 2018, Alicante-Elche airport

by Alex Trelinski

has seen a rise of one point one per cent in passenger numbers compared to 2017, with UK travellers dominating with over 40 per cent of the market. However, domestic flight numbers are accounting for most of the small passenger growth this year, suggesting that tourists are being tempted by cheap holiday packages in North Africa, Turkey, and the Middle East.

A MAN who syphoned off 20 litres of fuel from a lorry being repaired in an Alicante City garage, and who then tried to run over a mechanic who blocked his escape, has been arrested by the National Police. The mechanic called the police last Friday to report the incident after catching the fuel thief in the act, before trying to run him over in his car. The worker threw himself

by Alex Trelinski

to the ground to avoid being struck and then filed a report with the authorities. National Police agents didn’t take long to find the getaway car in the area, along with the stolen fuel in the canister, ahead of promptly arresting the 48-year-old thief, who was charged with committing a crime of robbery with violence and intimidation.

Albir Bike Show Hundreds of custom bike owners and enthusiasts are heading to Albir at the end of the month to parade their magnificent machines through the streets of town. The Costa Blanca Custom Bike Show, now in its eighth year, has become a major event on the resort’s calendar, proving popular with bike lovers and anyone who likes to get up close and personal with these glorious pieces of engineering. Meeting place and arena for the show, which takes place on Sunday August 26th, is the towns

Eucalyptus Park, just behind the Hotel Kaktus in Avenida Oscar Espla. The event, which comes at the end of a busy month for the town, following on a week after the Albir Fiestas, is free to enter and bikes of all types and makes are welcome to be entered into the show, with prizes given for outstanding machines. The fun kicks off at 10am with the highlight of the day undoubtedly being the spectacular parade of bikes along

the seafront and major streets of the town, bringing traffic to a halt and gasps of awe from onlookers. Throughout the day, a line-up of live rock bands and musicians will entertain the crowds, whilst a full bar service will provide refreshment and food stalls will feed the hungry hordes as they wander around the park, gaze at the amazing bikes and chat to other enthusiasts. Organisers expect a huge turnout for the show, which has grown in popularity year on year and requested visitors to get to the event as early as possible.

HOW DARE THEY?

A BRITISH grandmother has hit out at travel company Thomas Cook, for putting her in a Benidorm hotel which had “too many Spaniards” in it! 81-year-old Freda Jackson from Blackburn had a fortnight booking with a friend in May at the Poseidon Playa Hotel in the Poniente area of Benidorm and has since tried to claim a refund of over eleven-hundred pounds for the holiday or a free trip. Thomas Cook initially offered a 75-pound holiday voucher, but have since made a goodwill offer of over 500 pounds, which Freda and her fellow traveller have still to

by Alex Trelinksi

decide on whether to accept. According to the Lancashire Telegraph, Thomas Cook was hit by a list of complaints from Mrs Jackson including the “steep” location of the hotel, and that not enough was offered for British visitors. She said the tour company had ignored her request to put her in a hotel that was “on the flat” because of mobility issues, and that the holiday date was moved a day forward, which they discovered with just six days remaining before the original flight date to Alicante-Elche airport.

But Freda’s big blast came at the actual fellow-residents at the Poseidon Playa. “The hotel was full of Spanish holidaymakers, and they were so rude. One evening, a Spanish guy nearly knocked me flying and he just walked off without apologising”. “The entertainment in the hotel was all aimed at and focused on Spaniards. Why can’t the Spanish go elsewhere for their holidays?” Despite popular misconceptions in the UK, the Benidorm area attracts more domestic tourists throughout the year, as opposed to foreign visitors.

As previously reported in The Weekender, Callum was rushed to hospital a month ago, after he and his stepfather collapsed after having some drinks in Villamartin. Callum’s mother Helen told The Mirror that the pair had drunk spirits mixed with cola at a bar, with medics diagnosing that they had pesticides in their bloodstream. Helen, a housing support worker, said: “We don’t know if their drinks were spiked or if it was some accident with cleaning products.” Callum, who may have to take epilepsy drugs for the rest of his life, said: “I would say to everyone be careful with their drinks.” Investigations are still continuing over what was the cause of the poisonings, whilst over two and a half thousand pounds was raised through a crowd-funding appeal to compensate for lost wages, as Helen and her family stayed in the area, until Callum was discharged from hospital.

The magic of Pablo Alboran in Alicante by Andy Mansell

One of Spain’s most popular performers takes to the stage of Alicante’s Plaza de Toros on Saturday night August 18th. Pablo Alboran, who at the age of 29, has a string of hit singles and albums behind him, will be showcasing songs from his latest album ‘Prometo’, which has been at the number one spot on the Spanish charts for the last eight weeks. Famous for uploading his songs onto Youtube, whilst he was recording them for his first album, the 2010, self entitled ‘Pablo Alboran’, the young Malagueno singer became one of the biggest internet hits in the country, with millions of views of his videos. Eight years, four albums and multiple hit singles

later, the modest performer has become a favourite with music fans of all ages, who love his self penned ballads and upbeat numbers, such as ‘Solamente Tu’, ‘Tanto’, ‘El Beso’ and ‘Quien’, which have all reached number one in Spain and throughout Latin America. Following the highly

successful South American leg of his tour, Alboran landed in Spain earlier this year to perform for the first time in two years on home soil. Organisers of the event announced in the last few days that a few tickets for Saturdays concert were still available, by visiting the singers website www.pabloalboran.es

result of the explosion with two Marbella fire crews being called in to put the blaze, with the plumes of smoke seen over a large distance. An electrical fault or an overheating car battery are said to be the likely causes of the explosion, which caused initial concern amongst some people who feared it might have been a car bomb.

FOUR THIEVES resorted to throwing everything they could at the police, bar the kitchen sink, after being rumbled in a house robbery by Pilar de la Horadada officers. The Spaniards were robbing a villa in Torre de la Horadada in the early hours of Saturday morning, but were unaware that neighbours had heard the noise and had called the authorities. The thieves, all aged in their twenties, were surprised by the officers coming through the front door to arrest them, as they were rifling through the property. The quartet ran to the top floor and then started to throw chairs, appliances, broken glass, and even knives at the police officers, who with reinforcements, then went upstairs and found the men all in one room. They were arrested and handed over to the Guardia Civil, ahead of a court appearance.

AN OWL was saved from almost certain death, as it was rescued by a falconer, after falling into an irrigation basin in Benejúzar. The owl apparently hit the basin’s fence, and was unable to climb back out to safety on the slippery slope, or to fly away because its feathers were wet. The owner of the farm, where the basin is located,

spotted the owl in trouble and called in falconer Evaristo Rodriguez of the recentlyformed Friends of the Sierra de Benejúzar Association. Evaristo used a lassoed rope to hook onto one of the owl’s legs, and pulled it to safety. It was none the worse for wear after being trapped for several hours, and after a health check, it was released back into the locals.

The sound of silence

IT’S the second anniversary this weekend of 61-year-old expat Rob Sneddon being mowed down by a British-plated car on the AP-7 in Guardamar, but nobody has still been bought to justice. Mr.Sneddon, a former psychiatric nurse who worked in Eastbourne, before retiring to the Costa Blanca in 2001, was fatally injured at around 10.40 pm on Sunday August 21st 2016, as he was hit by a

British-plated white Land Rover, as he crossed the highway. The vehicle was abandoned next to the scene by the driver and at least one other passenger that was with him. The story caused outrage within the local British community at the time, with reports that the Land Rover Discovery was

registered to a UK firm, but two years later, no arrests have been made in either Britain or Spain, let alone any progress reports on the inquiry to find the driver of the car. His daughter Mandy made countless appeals on social media two years ago to bring her father’s killer to justice, as she graphically described how he was left to die “like a piece of meat” on the road. “You wouldn’t leave a

La Mata move THE POPULAR Wednesday market in the La Mata area of Torrevieja will definitely be moving to a new site this autumn, after a July switch had to be postponed. Torrevieja councillor Fanny Serrano said that the green light has now been given for the site transfer, after the July 4th transfer date came and went, because the council had not come up with a emergency plan, after green-lighting the switch back in April.

It’s the end of a battle for some traders and residents who have objected to the move from the existing car park site close to the N-332, to an area on Calle Avenida de Francia. Torrevieja council were ordered to find a new site because of the old area being susceptible to subsidence. The authority have not as yet declared a formal transfer date.

Sources have suggested that the Land Rover had been used for “criminal” activity and that the UK plates were false, but authorities have refused to comment as Mr.Sneddon’s family continue to be left in the dark, and urgently seeking some kind of closure to their personal tragedy.

HELP Vega Baja aims for “green bags”……

Following new legislation that shops (including charities) must charge customers for plastic bags, HELP Vega Baja thought they would look for an alternative solution. After looking for sponsorship, President Michele Masson met up with the José Miguel Perez from Grupo ASV and discovered that both organisations wanted to do what they could to help the environment. “We are keen to do what we can to not only help keep costs down for the charity but to consider the environment too. When we met with José it was wonderful to hear that he shared the same views and we agreed to work together to

produce carrier bags made of paper! Grupo ASV covered the cost of the bags and we were delighted to take delivery of 1,000 bags last week. As charities have to now charge for plastic bags the situation can be a little crazy. For example, we have heard from other charities that in some cases customers insist on new bags as they have to pay rather than accept used bags that are often donated to charities. Sadly this could lead to charities having to purchase plastic bags which obviously negates the whole benefit of the legislation. The sponsorship and support we received from Grupo ASV has been terrific

and the bags are now available in our shop in San Miguel. We still ask that customers bring along their own bags when shopping and any donations for the paper bags will go towards future stocks. The aim of the charity is to go completely “plastic free” for bags and we are working towards this”. If you would like to find out more about sponsoring HELP Vega Baja with any of their projects (bags, leaflets, posters etc), volunteering or if you have a group and you would like the team to come along to give a talk on the charity, please contact their San Miguel Centre on 966 723 733 or Michele Masson direct

THE MAX FACTOR

A Jack Russell dog called Max decided to do it a bit of exploring at his London home, but it didn’t exactly go to plan. He ended up stranded on a ledge two floors up after slipping out the window of his home in Maida Vale. However, despite his precarious position, Max

was rescued by a fire crew from Paddington who were called to the building. London Fire Brigade posted a photo on Twitter that showed Max patiently waiting as firefighters launched the rescue other with mission, members of the crew ready to catch up on the ledge below.

EXPAT CHALLENGE Tel: 671 935 072

British expatriates have launched a fresh legal challenge against the 2016 referendum, arguing that the result has been invalidated by the Electoral Commission’s ruling on leave campaign spending. The judicial review against the prime minister, Theresa May, has been submitted to the high court in London by the UK in EU Challenge group, which represents Britons living in France, Italy and Spain. It argues that the recent Electoral Commission findings on BeLeave and Vote Leave – which

resulted in two officials being reported to the police and punitive fines being imposed – means that the referendum to leave the EU was not a lawful, fair or free vote. The government is resisting the action on the grounds that it is out of time and that a similar challenge has already been dismissed. Nearly 80% of the estimated 1 to 2 million Britons living overseas in EU countries are of working age or younger. Many fear Brexit will threaten their livelihoods and make it far harder to travel across the

continent. Sue Wilson, who is chair of Bremain in Spain and one four claimants in the action, said: “We hope to demonstrate that you cannot win by cheating. If there is another referendum, there must not be a repeat of the illegal activity witnessed last time around.” “We have not taken back control – we have been put in the hands of those that care more about their careers and political party than their country. The UK deserves better, we deserve better, and we will not stop fighting until we succeed.”

ONE of Spain’s biggest hotel chains is having to slash prices to compete with cheap deals being offered by operators in Turkey and North Africa. The Barceló Hotel Group is Spain’s third-largest hotel chain, with over 50,000 hotel rooms spread across 49 hotels in the country, and spokesman Alvaro Paceco said that they have to reduce the prices of their rooms by up to 15 per cent to deal with the extra competition.

by Simon Russell

“This year has seen more competition with Spain from destinations in North Africa, such as Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt or Turkey,” he said. Hotels in Spain are having to compete with offers from places like three-star resorts on Turkey’s Mediterranean and Aegean coasts that are up to 73 percent cheaper than the Balearic Islands, according to one study by the Tourism Intelligence

unit of data specialist Mabrian Technologies. The Turkish Lira has also undergone a record nosedive in worth this year – falling by up to 45 per cent in value – leading to a surge in British holidaymakers flocking to the country due to the beneficial exchange rate. That has seen reduced visitor numbers to Spain during the peak summer period, with Benidorm hotels reporting the worst July occupancy rates since 2010.

Drop Quotes are similar to cryptograms, in that the goal is for the solver to uncover a hidden quote. A black-and-white crossword-style grid is set up for each quote, with a number of letters “hovering” above each column. Your task is to “drop” each of those letters into the appropriate square in each column, until the entire quote is revealed. All punctuation (commas, periods, dashes, etc.) has been removed. Good luck!

Pego Golf Society

We were 34 players today including five guests, Chris Andersen, Mark Caldwell, Jonathan Park, Ian Camp and Cameron Mitchell at Oliva Nova, playing in very dull and humid conditions. This didn’t stop some players achieving very high scores in a Singles Stableford Competition. The results were: Division 2 1st place with an incredible score of 42 points playing off 31 was Carla Chaszczewski. I hate it when Carla wins as I have to constantly check the spelling of her name! 2nd place with 36 points

was Peter Cornes playing off 33 3rd place with 35 points was David Blakeley playing off 23 Division 1 1st place with a magnificent score of 42 points was the venerable Russ Peters playing off 18, looking forward to a huge cut. 2nd place with another great score of 39 points was Terry Moore playing off 14 3rd place with another great score of 38 points was Penny Barden. Nearest the pin on Hole 5 was John Chessher and on Hole 16 Terry Moore.

There were three twos today, John Chessher, John Nicol and Terry Moore Carla (see the spelling above) won the balls in the water competition, correctly guessing 91. She also put up a bottle of champagne to celebrate her 50th wedding anniversary, won by the lucky Keith Price. Celia Cronin put up 2 bottles to celebrate her birthday, won by John Nicol and Shawn O’Gorman. Next week we have a Texas Scramble, if any guests wish to play please contact pegohandicapsec@gmail. com

San Miguel Golf Society at Vistabella Half past August at Vistabella and forty one players showed up for another round of the Eclectic competition. That was almost double the number from last week at Roda which suggests the summer exiles are starting to trickle back, along with a handful of overseas members taking annual holidays. Either way, a big enough field to merit 3 divisions once more. As Hugh ‘Mr Catchphrase’ Reilly would say, “Nice to see you, to see you, nice!”. Vistabella is now well established as one of the best tracks in the area, the new holes have bedded in well and added positively to the original character and challenge of the course. It was in very good condition and much enjoyed by all on the day but particularly by the winners. Robin Eastman came out the right side of the countback re-

sults this week, pipping John Osborne to the top spot in Gold with 38 points. Darren Hancock was a mere point behind in third. Best score of the day was posted by Ken Flaherty with an excellent 42 points. Hugh Reilly (38 points) and Kevin Albright (36 points) completed the Silver podium alongside Ken. The knife fighting bandits in Bronze continue to carve each other up a treat with Norman McBride ultimately employing age and cunning to overcome the youth and enthusiasm of Kyrre Skarsmoen on countback. Their 39 point scores were sufficient to relegate Norman Padmore to third by one shot. Bronze is clearly no place for those short on balls or shots. Or pacemaker batteries. Eva Pettersson, Bob McKeegan and Joost Boelhouwer were the nearest the pin sharpshoot-

ers, with Noel Stewart and Rod Wilcox taking first and second place guest honours. All receiving a sleeve of balls, sponsored by Moneycorp. Well played everyone. Ralph Tilbrook was the recipient of the Abacus prize this week, a lesson - perhaps the first of many - with Vistabella pro, Adrian Rudge, kindly donated by Adrian himself. Finally, a stewards’ enquiry has been ordered to investigate the result of the football draw prize this week. The football draw will be suspended until the outcome is announced. In its place a competition is being run to come up with a new nickname for Ken Flaherty. The competition will be free to enter and will not be run by Ken. Submit your entries to Tony on the back of a 5 euro note (non refundable).tabella for a very enjoyable day.

Las Ramblas Golf Society

We started the week with a 6x6x6. Played in teams of four, with the best single score to count on the first six, the best two on the middle six and three to score on the final six holes. The final result could not have been any closer, only 2 points separating the top three teams. With 84 points our winners were, Terry Field, Marleen Billen, Mike Mahoney and John Shervell. Wednesday saw a Stablefordcompetition with a couple of jokers thrown in.

In first place (yet again!) was ‘Slimmer’s World’ pin up boy of the month, the Rt Rev Bryan Neal with44 points. Well done Bryan, a great run of form. Lindsay Forbes came in with 43 pointsto take the runner’s upspot and Dave Pulling made a much awaited reappearance on the leader board with 41 points. Ken Robertson took the fourth slot. Andy McDonald was originally 2nd on countback but was disqualified for playing off the wrong handicap!

Six ‘2’s today. Well done but I’m not going to mention you! Friday was a 2 ball better ball which went to (Pedro) Dunn and Marleen Billen with 43 points, just pipping myself and that man again, Bryan Neal, by one point. Bryan’s promised the diet plan will follow soon! And finally, in the words of Bob Hope ‘If you watch a game, it’s fun. If you play at it, it’s recreation. If you work at it, it’s golf.’ Pues, hasta la semana que viene

Club Deportivo Torrevieja - New players update CD Torrevieja can confirm that Claudio Fabián Arturi (Buenos Aires, 1971) will be joining the club at the start of the new season as the new coach for the CD Torrevieja reserve team. Claudio is a National Level 3 and UEFA Pro coach, with experience in 1º Regional and 2º Regional. He has also trained Under-18 teams (Infantiles and Alevines) and also boasts a successful career as a professional footballer, having played in the 1º Division and 2º Division in Uruguay, Chile, Columbia, China and Spain.

CD Torrevieja has confirmed that midfielder Nana Kwaku Obeng (Ghana, 1998) has been signed to the club, after reaching an agreement. Nana has a good, well-rounded midfield game and a lot of potential. The African player trained in several of the major clubs in this area, including Elche CF, Hércules CF and Real Murcia CF. He joins CD Torrevieja from Real Murcia CF where last season he played in the reserve team, although a great deal of his training was carried out with the first team.

CD Torrevieja has closed the deal on signing Juan Pedro Navarro Valverde (Murcia, 1998) to the club, after both parties reached an agreement. Juanpe plays in goal. His strengths include his excellent reflexes and his ability to position himself well. He is a great prospect for the future. The Murcian player trained in the Santomera CF youth team and comes to Torrevieja from CD Plus Ultra in the Murcian Preferente league, where last season he was on the verge of ascending into the 3º División. Despite his young age (19 years), he was named the best goalkeeper in the Preferente league for the whole of Murcia, based on his youth career with Ranero CF and ADM Lorqui in First Division.

CD Torrevieja can now confirm the addition of Héctor Catalá Martínez (Elche, 1994) to the club, after reaching an agreement with the player. Héctor plays in right-back position. He stands out for due to his experience, strength and excellent aerial game. Catalá joins CD Torrevieja straight from SF Benidorm CF where last season he was a fixed player on the pitch. After having trained in the junior categories of Elche CF, he made it into Preferente in 2013/2014, and thanks to a spectacular season, he was signed to Crevillente Deportivo where he played three consecutive years in the 3º División with the club.

ALFAZ FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE

The 25th Alfaz Fantasy Football League got off to a flying start last week with the Premier League when there was 25 goals,8 clean sheets,28 yellow cards and 1 red one which was Everton´s Phil Jagielka who was dismissed by Referee Craig Pawson who just happens to be the same Referee who sent off 2 Chelsea players in their 1st game last Season, Wow talk about setting an early marker down! There was plenty of Fantasy points up for grabs and the 1st team to take advantage was Nikki´s Liverpool 94 who rattled up 60 points which took them to the top of the Fantasy League by one point over Winnie´s team Le Hombre Rioja. Both teams are full of Liverpool Players who enjoyed a walk in the Park when they beat west Ham 4-0 at Anfield. Lee´s team Athletico Higgo are right on their tails and are only 1 point behind them.Down at the bottom of the table Susan´s Brazilian Hooligans are joined by John´s Dodgy Dribblers, both on 7 points. The two Ladies are also top of our Mark Carter Ladies Section just ahead of M.A,K. Forever and last Season´s winner of this League Pauline´s Vodka Army who are joint 3rd. At the opposite end of the Table Kim´s Ginger United have got off to a bad start and are 4 points adrift of last Season´s serial Wooden Spoon Winner Laura´s Legends. William & Harry are newcomers to the Fantasy League and they have taken to it like a Duck to water has they have wasted no time in reaching the Summit of our Junior League with a 4 point advantage over young Olly´s team Olly F.C. Roo & Woos Wombles are holding

Brothers together La Liga Returns

British twin brothers Adam and Simon Yates will race together at the Vuelta a Espana for Australian team Mitchelton-Scott. Simon was scheduled to take part in the final Grand Tour of the season and will be the team’s leader in the race. Adam also decided to ride to add to his experience of competing in multiple big races after a modest Tour de France. He will ride in support of his 26-year-old sibling in the race, which starts in Malaga on August 25th.. “The Vuelta a Espana wasn’t originally on my programme,” Adam said. “But, together with the management, we came to the decision

by Alex Trelinski

that doing the Vuelta after the Tour would be another good chance to get some experience in riding multiple Grand Tours in one year.” Adam, who was fourth in the 2016 Tour de France as he won the young riders’ classification, finished in 29th - more than an hour behind winner Geraint Thomas - in this year’s race. Thomas and last year’s winner Chris Froome are almost certainly going to give La Veulta a miss, with this year’s race not coming to the Costa Blanca, but further south it will be taking in the Murcia region and Mar Menor.

THE SERIOUS domestic business of La Liga returns this weekend, with champions Barcelona kicking off their title defence this Saturday night against Alaves at the Camp Nou. Barca romped to the title last season, as Ernesto Valderde’s side left the likes of Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid trailing in their wake. There’s one other bonus for Barca with Cristiano Ronaldo’s shock move from Real to Juventus, meaning that Lionel Messi will no longer face off in one of the most thrilling personal rivalries in footballing history. The Argentinian talisman has some new responsibilities this season as he has been named as

the club’s new captain. Ronaldo-less Madrid entertains Getafe on Sunday night and has exChelsea keeper, Thibaut Courtois to boast as one of their summer signings. The tastiest looking match comes on Monday night as Valencia entertain Atletico Madrid, with French striker Kevin Gamiero joining Valencia from Atletico, and he is set to partner loanee, Belgian World Cup star, Michy Batshuayi up front. After last season’s vast improvement, Valencia are certainly making their intentions clear, and need a winning start to make a serious push to break up Barca along with Atletico and Real at the top.

New look Fury British heavyweight Tyson Fury says “the old Tyson Fury is gone” as he continues his comeback when he takes on Francesco Pianeta this Saturday in Belfast. Fury became world champion in 2015 with a shock win over Wladimir Klitschko but

by Alex Trelinski

then spent two-and-ahalf years out of the ring, during which time he says he “ballooned up to 28 stone” in weight. The 30-year-old returned to action with a victory over Sefer Seferi in June.

“To lose that weight has been mentally and physically draining,” said Fury. “To do it there has to be a want in the brain and I have that. That’s why I’m a sick boxer and I win fights. “The old Tyson Fury is gone, never to be seen

again in history. The new Tyson Fury is here now.” Fury says he will not take the challenge of Pianeta lightly ahead of their Windsor Park bout, which is on the undercard of Carl Frampton’s WBO featherweight title defence against Luke Jackson.

all the young ones up at the bottom and are trailing Harrison´s Boden Boys by 3 points. The Golden Boot League this Year is being sponsored Rachell at Accross the Costas. With 25 goals hitting the back of the net it meant it was a good start for this Division which once again Nikki´s Liverpool 94 took advantage by making the top spot for the 2nd time this week with a 5 point margin over 3 teams who are in joint 2nd place. Nick´s Black Cats,Chris´s Anirtak Hotspurs and La Catalan. At the very foot of the table 8 teams have yet to score. Three teams are going into our Monthly Wine Draw and they are our highest scoring team which was Liverpool 94 who clocked up 60 points and Two teams who got a very creditable lowest score of 7 points Brazilian Hooligans & Dodgy Dribblers. ADIOS ALONSO SPAIN’S two-time world champion Fernando Alonso is to retire from Formula 1 at the end of the season. The McLaren driver will end a career that began with a debut for Minardi at the Australian Grand Prix of 2001. Alonso, 37, who is competing in his 17th F1 season, won the 2005 and 2006 championships when racing for Renault. “After 17 wonderful years in this amazing sport it’s time for me to make a change and move on,” he said. “I made this decision some months ago and it was a firm one. There are still several Grand Prix to go this season, and I will take part in them

with more commitment and passion than ever,” he added. “Let’s see what the future brings; new exciting challenges are around the corner. I’m having one of the happiest times ever in my life but I need to go on exploring new adventures.” Alonso has in recent years branched out into other series and in June he won the Le Mans 24 Hours sportscar race at his first attempt.

STOKES ACQUITTED ENGLAND all-rounder Ben Stokes is free to resume his international career unhindered by any legal worries after a Bristol jury found the 27-yearold Durham player not guilty of affray on Tuesday. Stokes played in England’s first test win over India at Edgbaston but missed out on the second test at Lords because of his trial. The England selectors initially decided not to include him in the squad for the third test which starts at Trent Bridge tomorrow, but after the not guilty verdict, they announced that Stokes would join the squad.. Stokes denied the affray charge following the fracas between a group of men last September. Ryan Ali, 28 - who was

knocked unconscious in the brawl - was also found not guilty of the same charge. The fight happened several hours after England had played a one-day international against the West Indies at the County Ground in Bristol. Stokes told the jury he had “stepped in” to defend two gay men who were being verbally abused but then had to defend himself from Mr Ali and Ryan Hale, 27, who was threatening violence. The matter is not over yet for the player, as he is now set to face an England and Wales Cricket Board independent disciplinary committee, where is likely to be charged with bringing the game into disrepute.
