2018 Farm Seed
CATALOG
Thank You For Farming! Thank you for growing crops that feed us and for taking care of your soil for future generations.
“My grandfather used to say that once in your life you need a doctor, a lawyer, a policeman, and a preacher, but every day, three times a day, you need a farmer.” Brenda Schoepp, Canadian farmer, author, and speaker.
With the current low commodity prices, we know that farmers like you are looking for ways to minimize costs and increase profitability. That’s why we focus on providing you the best available seed varieties and the information you need to plant the right seed at the right time on the right acre.
VIKING CONVENTIONAL NON-GMO AND ORGANIC CORN PERFORMS
Our 100% focus on conventional non-GMO corn and soybeans is already showing results. Viking hybrids such as 57-01, 42-05, 89-99, 63-05, and 49-09 won and placed in FIRST, State, and Country plots from South Dakota to Pennsylvania (take a look at the trials page of our website for more information). On-farm performance was also outstanding, with comments such as: “I had one field that was split-planted with 40-03 and 63-05 and they averaged 222 bu/ac dry. It was just average ground, not the best, but not the worst either. That 63-05 if you put it a decent ground and manage it well, that thing will put out a lot of yield. And the 40-03 has a lot of test weight and yielded right with the 63-05. I was very pleased with those two numbers.” - Hampton, IA
VIKING ULTRAPURE AND PURE CORN AND SOYBEANS
Because you can’t grow non-GMO grain if you don’t start with pure seed, we are continuing to expand our UltraPure (99.9% GMO-free) and Pure (99% GMO-free) seed options to include more organic and conventional Viking Corn varieties. In 2018, we also are offering UltraPure soybeans for the first time!
RESEARCH AND PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT
Our research and product development efforts continue to expand. We are 100% focused on identifying and purifying the best nonGMO corn and soybean varieties for conventional and organic farmers. Our replicated research network provides us data from 15 states. And we are now the proud owners of a plot planter and plot combine that we’ll be using to conduct our own on-farm research.
HYBRID CEREAL RYE AND OTHER SMALL GRAINS
We believe that KWS Hybrid Cereal Rye could be a game-changer in the Upper Midwest, if we are able to integrate rye back into animal rations. KWS Bono yielded 145 bu/ac in two different University of Minnesota locations this year. We are showing our commitment to rye with a 5-year, $50,000 gift supporting the U of M cereal rye evaluation trial. KWS has just started a four-year swine-feeding study with cereal rye at the University of Illinois.
COVER CROPS CONTINUE TO GROW
We’re still learning the best ways to manage cover crops successfully, but there is no doubt that they are here to stay. Innovative farmers are finding ways to use cover crops to prevent erosion, improve soil health, and perhaps most importantly to improve farm profitability. Check out our cover crop section or give us a call! Thank you so much for what you do, and thank you for picking up this catalog and letting us be a partner in your success! By Mac and Tom Ehrhardt

Organic Floury, Leafy Silage Corn NEW! Premium Quality Silage-Specific Hybrids Viking floury, leafy corn silage hybrids have been bred to meet the complex agronomic and nutritional requirements of the dairy and beef industries. They offer a superior balance of effective and digestible fiber, more rumen-available starch and boast silage-specific agronomics such as total-plant yields and long harvest windows. They need less time in the silo before they can be fed and produce highquality milk and beef dependably and economically. Viking LF hybrids have more leaf area per plant and above the ear than conventional corn hybrids Agronomic Basics • Plant at 28,000 – 30,000 seeds/acre • Harvest at 50% milk line (65% moisture) • Suitable for high moisture corn; do not harvest for grain • Isolate in the field (by at least 300 ft) • Do not interplant with other corn hybrids for silage • Harvest and store separately (ready to feed in ~ 30 days) • Reduce concentrate corn in TMR when feeding LF hybrids

Dual Purpose Grain/Silage Corn Viking GS Hybrids What are Viking GS hybrids? Simply put, these are organic dual-purpose grain hybrids that also produce exceptional quality and/or tonnage for silage. We test our hybrids, in the field and in the lab, for silage quantity & quality against leading silage hybrid genetics at similar maturities. Only those hybrids that show consistently excellent tonnage and quality get the GS designation. Why GS? Because grain has energy. Our GS hybrids are very high-yielding grain hybrids, so you are going to get a lot of grain in your silage, which equates to higher energy. GS hybrids have an optimal grain-to-stover ratio and have excellent standability compared to low-lignin specialty silage hybrids.

Organic & Conventional Soybeans & GMOs We understand that seed purity is extremely important to farmers growing grain for a Non-GMO contract. We have not only committed the Viking Brand to seed purity, we have made significant investments to establish the seed industry’s first Non-GMO Purity Guarantee (Viking Ultra-Pure). All Viking soybeans labeled with the Ultra-Pure label are guaranteed to be 99.9% GMO-free. We are able to meet this high standard on select soybean varieties through purification, isolation, and stringent testing. All Viking (organic and conventional) soybeans not labeled with Ultra-Pure are produced under the Minnesota Crop Improvement Association’s ‘Non-GMO Seed Program’, which traces, inspects, and verifies that the seed in the bag is less than 99.5% GMO. We do not guarantee that any of these varieties are 100% free of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). We do not guarantee that grain harvested from this seed will be marketable as non-GMO grain or meet any contractual agreements.

Alfalfa ALFALFA BEST PRACTICES 1) Planting recommendations: a. Spring seeding: April 15th to May 15th or Fall seeding: August 1st to 15th. b. Seed alfalfa into a firm seed bed ¼-inch to ½-inch deep. c. Plant 15-20 lbs/acre. 2) Optimum pH between 6.7 and 6.9 (soil test and lime accordingly 12 months prior to seeding) 3) Maintain phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) levels throughout life of stand. Soil test in fall and supplement as needed.
ALFALFA VARIETY SELECTION Our alfalfa line up has been developed to help farmers maximize their yield and quality across diverse management practices and unique environmental challenges. When selecting an alfalfa variety, the key considerations are; how long will the field be in production, how many cuttings a year do you hope to take, what is the end use for the hay (quality needs), what are the unique challenges for the field location (disease / insects).
ALFALFA VARIETY KEY HD: Highly Digestible Alfalfa lines with the HD distinction are tested for quality from the very first selection by the breeders. These lines are “low lignin” resulting in milk/ton numbers that are first in class. HQ: High Quality Highest Quality alfalfa lines from WL, one of the largest alfalfa breeding programs in the world. AP: Aphanomyces Race 2 Resistance Farmers in northeast Iowa, southeast Minnesota, and southwest Wisconsin face challenges with Aphanomyces root rot in alfalfa. If you are in one of these regions choose a variety with race 2 Aphanomyces resistance. These varieties also have resistance to race 1. LH: Leaf Hopper Resistance These varieties maintain strong yields and forage quality under heavy pressure from leafhoppers.

Organic Alfalfa "WL358 was really big and leafy. We have had good quality off that field, and the cows really milk well on it. I can tell you it was very tall and healthy and consistent between all four cuttings. We have been very pleased with that variety over the years." Chris Lutteke, Wells MN
IMPROVE ALFALFA HAY THE OLD-FASHIONED WAY University of Minnesota field tests show that seeding an alfalfa/grass mix comprised of 30% to 40% grasses achieves higher yields in the final stand. In fact, orchardgrass or tall fescue mixtures with alfalfa had approximately 15% more milk production potential per acre compared to alfalfa alone.
BENEFITS OF ALFALFA-GRASS MIXTURES • Yield. Alfalfa-grass mixtures will often provide greater yield than direct-seeded alfalfa. • Drying rate. Grasses like orchardgrass, tall fescue, smooth bromegrass, and timothy produce hay that dry faster. • Feeding value. Grasses add higher fiber (NDF) digestibility than alfalfa to increase relative forage quality (RFQ). • Weed suppression. Grasses provide competition and cover to edge out weeds.

Cool Season Grasses
* = variety not stated
Orchardgrass A bunch-type, tall-growing, cool-season perennial grass. It is one of the most commonly used and productive cool season grasses, tolerant to shade, fairly drought resistant with good winter hardiness. It regrows quickly and is a common component in pasture and hay mixtures. Best Use: Suitable for hay or pasture. Begin grazing at 6-8”; stop when grass gets to 3-4”. Adaptations: It is better adapted to well-drained soils and is especially well adapted to mixtures with legumes such as alfalfa or red clover. Requirements: Generally persists longer than most cool-season grasses in frequently cut, properly managed alfalfa mixtures. Close grazing in the fall is consistently associated with winter-kill so leave 3-4”. Its high palatability to all classes of livestock makes it susceptible to over-grazing. A minimum requirement is a re-growth period of no less than 28 days when rotational grazing. Planting Date: March-May, August 15th-30th. Seeding: 8-12 lbs/acre alone or 3-5 lbs/acre in a mix Suggestions: For alfalfa-orchardgrass mixtures, carefully select both varieties. The alfalfa variety should be a quick recovery type (high FD) to help it compete with the fast-growing orchardgrass. Select later-maturing orchardgrass varieties (HLR, Echelon, Luxor, Niva) for mixing with alfalfa.

Bromegrass A leafy, deep-rooted, sod-forming, perennial grass that is very persistent. Forage quality compares well with other cool-season grasses. It matures somewhat later in the spring than orchardgrass and makes less summer growth, but is much more winter hardy. Best Use: Suitable for hay or long term pasture. Begin grazing at 8-10”. Stop when grass is 4”. A re-growth period of 28-35 days between grazing periods is optimal. Adaptations: Grows best on well-drained silt-loam or clay-loam soils. Requirements: Slow to establish. Rarely provides a productive crop until the second year. Low tolerance to 3 and 4-cut hay systems. Will survive but go dormant during periods of drought and extremes in temperature. Brome requires early spring and fall applications of N to maintain high yields in a pure stand. Planting Date: March-May, August 1st-30th. Seeding: 15 lbs/acre alone or 2-5 lbs/acre w/ alfalfa. Suggestions: Seed meadow brome or Alaska brome for haying applications, smooth brome for long-term pastures

Timothy A shallow-rooted, perennial, cool-season grass well adapted to the Upper Midwest. Very winter hardy and very palatable. Best Use: Its energy storage pattern makes it a better hay crop than a pasture species. It is usually mixed with alfalfa or clover for hay or pasture. Preferred grass in horse hay. Frost seeds well. Adaptations: Best production is on heavy ground and cooler climates. Requirements: Its shallow root system makes it a poor choice on droughty soils. Sensitive to high temperatures and its mid-summer growth may be limited. Planting Date: March-May, August 1st-30th. Seeding: 8 lbs/acre alone or 1-2 lbs/acre in a mix. 26

Tall Fescue The best alfalfa companion grass because they establish and mature at similar rates. It is a deep rooted, hardy, bunch-type grass. Its extensive root system helps it withstand drought conditions. It is more productive in midsummer than brome, timothy, or orchardgrass. New varieties have finer, softer leaves, a trait that improves palatability and digestibility. Can provide 2-3 cuttings of hay annually. Very tolerant of intensive grazing. Best Use: Suitable for hay or pasture. Can be seeded in pure stands or in combination with other grasses or legumes. Ideal for winter stockpiling as cut hay or pasture. Begin grazing at 6-8” and remove animals when grass gets down to 3-4”. Adaptations: Well adapted to all soil types from drought prone soils to poorly drained soils and wet areas. Requirements: When used as an alfalfa companion, time the first cutting according to the maturity of the fescue, rather than the alfalfa. The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th cuttings can be timed with the alfalfa. Use only low-endophyte varieties. Planting Date: March-May, August 15th-30th. Seeding: 20-25 lbs/acre alone or 4-12 lbs/acre in a mix. Suggestion: Seed meadow fescue with your tall fescue to improve palatability in pasture mixes.

“When you look at the field it looks like a solid stand of alfalfa. But the grass is out there, it is just a little shorter than the alfalfa. People told me that having fescue in there would increase my RFQ by 15%, and after one cutting on the seeding year, I think it’s true.” West Bend, IA
Meadow Fescue
Laura
Barolex
Meadow Fescue A highly productive, very winter hardy, perennial bunch grass. Leaves are long and slender, bright green and succulent. It is softer-leafed and more palatable than tall fescue. More persistent than perennial ryegrass, it has equal nutritive value and stronger summer production under hot, dry conditions. Best Use: A great component in long-term pasture mixes or as an alfalfa companion. Begin grazing at 6-8” and remove animals when the grass is down to 3-4”. Best Adaptation: Grows under cool, moist conditions, and tolerates wet and occasionally flooded soils. On rich soils, it reaches up to 30” in height. Requirements: While yield may be less than tall fescue, animal intake and performance should be higher due to its increased palatability. Planting Date: March-May. Seeding: 20 lbs/acre alone or 6-12 lbs/acre in a mix. Suggestions: Include meadow fescue in any mixture for hay or pasture to improve palatability and tonnage.
Perennial Ryegrass A perennial, cool-season, grass that grows from 1-2’ tall. It establishes rapidly, has excellent wear tolerance, is relatively high yielding, and has high nutritive value. Recovers rapidly and tillers extensively. Careful management and variety selection can help ensure the best results.
Best Use: Used mainly for grazing or haylage in mixture with red clover or white clover. Begin grazing at 4-6” – stop when grass gets down to 3”. Adaptations: Produces best on heavier, moisture-holding soils. Not well suited for sandy ground. Requirements: Slow mid-summer growth. Should be grazed closely and frequently. To maximize winter hardiness, graze or cut to 4-6” going into fall freeze up, apply 50# of N along with sulfur, and maintain good levels of calcium and micronutrients. Planting Date: March-May, August 1st-15th. Can also be frost seeded in early spring to help maintain it as a component of a permanent pasture. Seeding: 25-35 lbs/acre alone or 4-10 lbs/acre in a mix.

Festulolium A cross between meadow fescue or tall fescue and perennial or Italian ryegrass. It combines the quick establishment, high feed value, production, and palatability of ryegrass with the extra persistence and summer productivity of fescue. It has a higher sugar content that is easily digested, allowing animals to gain a high-energy ratio for milk/meat conversion. Provides excellent season long forage. Best Use: Recommended for silage in a mixture with alfalfa or red clover in short-term rotations (2-3 years). Also used in fast-establishing pasture mixes or in over seeding pastures. Begin grazing at 4-6” and remove animals when grass is 2-3”. Adaptations: Likes medium-heavy soils. When mixed with alfalfa or clover, it provides a grass companion that will enhance palatability and quality in the ration. Requirements: Should not be seeded alone due to its susceptibility to cold but has good persistence when mixed with legumes or other grasses. Planting Date: March-May, August 1st-15th. Seeding: 25-45 lbs/acre alone or 5-10 lbs/acre in a mix. Suggestions: Keep using bromegrass or orchardgrass but add festulolium to improve the quality of your pasture or haylage.

Italian Ryegrass Referred to as the Italian stallion of cool season grasses by our friends at the University of Minnesota due to its quick re-growth, very early development in spring, and a prolonged growing period in the fall. It will not head out in the seeding year unless you get a hard freeze after seed has germinated. This results in high quality forage production without the low quality stems and seed heads. Considered an annual in the Upper Midwest. Recently, it has also been recognized as the perfect rotation crop for plowdown or emergency feed.
Best Use: Best suited as a pasture crop seeded at full rate. When seeded at a lower rate it can be used in hay mixtures and as a nurse crop for alfalfa seedings. Begin grazing at 4-6” and stop when the grass is down to 2-3”. Adaptations: Produces best on heavier, moisture-holding soils. Keep off of droughty ground. Planting Date: March-May, August 1st-15th (for late fall grazing). Seeding: 30-35 lbs/acre alone or 4-5 lbs/acre as an alfalfa cover crop. Suggestions: Use instead of small grain as your cover crop over new alfalfa seedings. Can give you up to ½ ton of additional hay in the seeding year over that of a small grain. Seeding heavier than the recommended amount may smother alfalfa seeding. Seed early spring onto pasture that has been closely grazed the previous fall to improve yield and quality.

Reed Canarygrass
Establishes very rapidly, giving you higher productivity in the planting season. Annual ryegrass is capable of producing forage yields in a very short period of time. Has good cold tolerance. Best Use: Single year forage production, or as green manure plowdown seeded in the fall. Planting Date: March-May, August-September Adaptations: Well adapted to heavier soil types. Requirements: Will head out in early to mid-summer. Will usually winterkill in northern zones. Seeding: 30 lbs/acre alone or 10-15 lbs/acre to beef up pastures.
Annual Ryegrass (variety not stated)
Best Use: It can be harvested as a pasture, silage, or hay, in pure stands or mixed with legumes. Begin grazing at 10-12” and remove animals when 4-5”. Will not tolerate close grazing. For hay, cut at least three times per year. Adaptations: Well adapted to wet soils, tolerant to both poor drainage and drought conditions. Mature stands can persist in standing water. Tolerant of acidic soils. Requirements: Slow to establish. Poor competitor as a seedling. Little forage will be produced in the first year. Rest periods are required for grazing. Delayed harvest can result in poor quality. Planting Date: March-May, August 1st-25th. Seeding: 8-10 lbs/acre alone or 2-4 lbs/acre in a mix. • Low alkaloid variety suitable for grazing or haying Conventional______ $3.00/lb $150/50#bag
Kentucky Bluegrass
Forage Chicory
A short-to-medium height, long-lived, highly palatable, perennial grass. It spreads via rhizomes to form a dense sod. Pastures composed of Kentucky bluegrass mixed with legumes also have higher nutritional values than pure grass pastures. Best Use: Ideal for permanent pastures that are continuously grazed. It tolerates close and frequent grazing better than other cool-season forage grasses. Adaptations: Grows best during cool, moist weather on well-drained, fertile soils. Requirements: It is slightly slower to establish than many other cool-season grasses. However, once established, it spreads quickly via its extensive rhizome production. Planting Date: March-May, August 15th-30th. Seeding: 30 lbs/acre alone for pasture or 4-10 lbs/acre in a mix. 100-150 lbs alone for lawns.

Small Grains Field day on Tom Frantzen's farm in New Hampton, IA. “The Brasetto Hybrid Winter Rye is the most exciting thing I have seen in 40 years of farming! Suppresses weeds, provides erosion-control and has unheard-of yields. It has many benefits as part of my hog ration.” Customers report yields of 110 - 130 bu/acre. Pictured is farmer Wade Dooley and David Wesiberger, grad student at ISU.
SMALL GRAINS = SIMPLE SOLUTIONS By: Mac Ehrhardt
We are excited about small grains! Small grains offer simple solutions to many challenges that farmers face today such as corn rootworm, nematodes, herbicide-resistant weeds, SDS and anthracnose. Many farmers are aware of the benefits that can come from adding small grain production to their operation. Adding small grain underseeded with a legume (or followed by a cover crop mixture) can spread out the workload, diversify a farm’s financial risk, reduce input costs, improve soil health, reduce erosion, and improve water quality. We all recognize that the challenge of small grains is making it work economically: you can’t pay the rent with an oat crop. But we also believe that this is starting to change. Private companies, universities, and farm organizations are working to make small grains viable again. We are proud to be contributing to this effort. Albert Lea Seed is committed to the advancement of small grains in agriculture. We have provided a $50,000 grant to the University of Minnesota to fund their Winter Cereal Rye Evaluation program for the next five years. We also support Practical Farmers of Iowa and all the great work they are doing to advance the study and development of small grain production. They have been leading the charge on re-introducing small grains into farm rotations. Through a working group involving farmers, researchers, millers, and food companies, PFI is working to “prime the pump” for small grain production in Iowa to help large companies meet their sustainability objectives. www.practicalfarmers.org
SUMO OATS
NEW!
We work closely with multiple university programs and researchers to bring you the best possible genetics and developments as they become available. That’s why we’re excited about an up-and-coming small grain called Sumo oats. Oat breeder Melanie Caffé-Treml (South Dakota State University) developed Sumo oats specifically for organic farmers. This white oat has an excellent test weight and good milling characteristics with a high percentage of plump kernels. They have an early maturity, excellent test weight, good standability, and very good crown rust resistance. Sumo oats will work well for underseeding with alfalfa and is a promising oat for organic food-grade markets. “I raised 75 acres of the Sumo oats this year. It was the best oats I have raised in recent years. I weighed the first couple loads and estimated the field to average about 132 bu / acre. It was standing pretty well. It tested over 38# test weight. I was very happy with the Sumo oats. I got a lot of straw from the field. I would recommend Sumo oats as a good variety to raise.” — Jonathan Olson, Cottonwood, MN
SPECIALTY GRAIN MANAGEMENT Selling grain into a specialty market takes an increased level of management and care for the final product; it also offers a higher rate of return and an opportunity to earn a premium. Oat millers typically have a 36 lb test weight minimum, and start to apply dockage to oats under 36 lbs. Farmers interested in selling oats to food-grade milling companies in the northern Corn Belt have some oat varieties to choose from that yield well and can reach desired milling specifications with good management and a little help from Mother Nature. Grain Millers has increased their purchases of Midwest-sourced organic oats over 300% in the last 3 years. Careful management and proper variety choice can make oats a profitable crop due to their low input requirements and favorable effects on succeeding crops in a rotation. Planting oats before April 15 is recommended for optimal yields and test weight. See our website for more growing tips. 30 Small Grains

HYBRID RYE – GAME CHANGER! We launched our first hybrid rye variety, Brasetto, for the 2016 growing season. Growers had huge yields and success. By customer demand we offer three KWS varieties for 2018, each with their own unique characteristics. But why hybrid rye? 1. It yields up to 140 bu/acre (up to 100% more than open pollinated varieties) 2. Plants are shorter, excellent standing, and uniform in height and maturity. 3. Disease resistant! All have minimal risk for ergot. 4. Excellent winter hardiness. 5. Superior grain quality for milling, distilling, and feed markets. 6. As part of a feedstock, rye has many advantages for livestock health. Seeding: KWS recommends 800,000 viable seeds/acre, which is about 65-80 lbs per acre depending on seed size and germination. Seed ½” to 1” deep. Management: Hybrid rye requires higher management than open pollinated rye. Fertility and disease management should be similar to wheat. About 1 lb of available nitrogen per bushel of grain. Uniform seed spacing is essential. **Cannot save seed, requires license agreement

Field Peas & Pea Mixtures PEAS FOR FEED OR FORAGE EXCELLENT LIVESTOCK PROTEIN! Forage: Adding peas to your small grain will dramatically boost protein levels of your oats, barley or wheat nurse crop. They are also excellent spring-seeded with small grains as an early cut forage or grazing crop, or seeded in the fall for late-season cutting or grazing. Field pea forage is about 18-20 percent protein. Combined with small grains, peas can raise the protein of forages by as much as 3-5% and raise your RFV by 5-20 points. Grain: Peas contain high levels of carbohydrates and protein, are low in fiber, and contain 86 to 87 percent total digestible nutrients, which makes them an excellent livestock feed. As a dry feed source fed straight, no roasting or processing is required! They are often cracked or ground & mixed with small grains in the ration. Peas for grain are an excellent fit with oats or barley. Swath field pea when the seed moisture content has reached 25 to 30 percent. Straight combine field pea when the seed moisture content has reached 18 to 20 percent.
Field Peas
* = variety not stated
Field peas are planted early, grow tall and leafy, and are tolerant to frost & drought. They can be harvested for silage, pasture, hay, or grain. When grown in mixture with small grains, peas add tremendous quality and increase the protein content in forage. Best Use: Forage (4010/Yellow) or grain (Yellow) Requirements: Avoid wet ground. Prefers cool wet weather. Reduce planting rates when using as a cover crop for alfalfa. Use inoculant on virgin ground. Planting Date: March to April or Aug 15 to Sept 10 Seeding: 50-75 lbs/acre along with 75-100 lbs/acre of small grain for forage or 150-200 lbs/acre alone for grain. Plant deep and early.

Small grain and pea mixtures provide excellent forage quality and tonnage (see chart on page 39). The small grain allows the peas to stand more erect making them easier to harvest. Sometimes used as a cover crop for spring-seeded alfalfa to maximize forage production in the seeding year. Can yield 2-4 tons DM/acre. Grows best in cool weather. Best Use: Drill in early spring and make silage or baleage. In recent years some producers have also tried it as a fall forage (drilled in late July and early August and chopped in October). Requirements: Cannot be used for dry hay. For maximum forage value chop for silage when small grain is in boot stage. Tonnage will increase as grain heads out, but quality and regrowth will diminish. Protein can range from 14% to 19%. Planting Date: Mar. to Apr. 30 or July 25-Aug. 15 Seeding: Drill 100-150 lbs/ acre about 1” deep in early spring. Definitely use the lighter rate if underseeding with alfalfa in the spring.

Medium Red Clover
Red clover is the one of the most widely-seeded forage legumes in the world. It establishes easily and rapidly. Not as drought-tolerant or winter-hardy as alfalfa. Medium red clovers will recover after being cut and mammoth red clover will not. Best Use: Pasture, haylage, dry hay or cover crop Adaptation: Red clover grows on wet and low pH soils that won’t support alfalfa. Better adapted to heaver soils Requirements: Difficult to dry as hay. Improved varieties (Ruby Red, Freedom) dry down faster. Can cause livestock bloat when heavy stands are grazed. Planting Date: February - May, July 15th - August 30th. Can be frost-seeded. Seeding: 8-12 lbs/acre straight; 2-5 lbs/acre in a mix. Drill or broadcast and roll. Plant ¼ in. to ½ in. deep

* = variety not stated
Sorghum-Sudangrass A hybrid cross between sorghum and sudangrass and intermediate in size and yield. Fast-growing, highly productive, multi-cut annual grass to maximize summer forage. High plant rates produces fine stems which dry easier with increased quality. Can grow 8’ tall if left uncut. Protein of 9-14%, but less energy than corn silage because it lacks grain. Best Use: Best suited for grazing, green chop, baleage, or silage. Adaptation: Good soils, but is drought tolerant. Likes hot weather. All hybrids we sell are resistant to downy mildew and anthracnose. Requirements: Harvest between 40"-50" (boot stage) for highest quality feed. Cut 6" above ground for best regrowth. Larger stems make drying for hay more difficult than for sudangrass. Manage potential for prussic acid and nitrate build-up. Planting Date: Mid-May – early July (soil temps 62o+) Seeding: 20-30 lbs/acre drilled, 25-35 lbs/acre broadcast. High end of the rate for hay production. ¾"-1½" deep.

Millets Japanese Millet*
Hybrid Pearl Millet*
Foxtail Millet*
Upright annual grass that grows quickly with adequate moisture and fertility. Much finer stems than pearl millet or sorghums. When cut before heading the protein can range from 14-20% and customers report that it is very palatable. Can be cut 2 or 3 times. In a single-cut system it can reach 5’ in height. Best Use: Hay, pasture, and silage. Excellent feed for cattle, horses, and sheep. As with all grasses, earlier cutting leads to higher quality, lower yields, and more drying time. No prussic acid problems. Adaptations: Best growth on good soils and requires good fertility. Tolerant to wet soils and will survive standing water. Requirements: Cut before heading and leave 6” of stubble for faster recovery. Does not perform well on droughty or low fertility soils. Not frost-tolerant. Planting Date: Mid-May – early June (soil 62o+) Seeding: 25-35 lbs/acre ½”-1” deep. Conventional Untreated______$44/50 lb bag
Erect annual bunchgrass can grow up to 4'-8' tall. Used as a multi-cut, warm-season forage grass. Much coarser stems than Japanese Millet, but can produce more tonnage. The forage can be high in protein, is highly digestible and has no prussic acid problems. Best Use: Hay, pasture, and silage. Most frequently used in beef cow/calf and dairy operations. Adaptations: Likes good ground but can produce under low rainfall and low soil fertility. Requirements: Leave 6” of stubble for faster recovery after cutting or grazing. Planting Date: Mid-May – early July (soil 62o+) Seeding: 12-20 lbs/acre ½”-1” deep.
Commonly used as a single-cut emergency hay crop because it can be ready to cut in 50-60 days. Fast growing annual grass growing to 5’. Fine quality forage easy to hay. Harvest in boot stage. Milkweed: Save The Monarch Butterfly!
RESTORE MONARCH BUTTERFLY HABITAT AND AVOID NEEDLESS DITCH MOWING.
The monarch butterfly population has declined by about 90 percent in the last ten or fifteen years. Meanwhile, milkweeds, which are the required host plants for monarch butterflies, have been disappearing from the Midwest landscape. Midwesterners can restore butterfly habitat by planting milkweeds and other flowering plants. Roadsides are one of the best remaining habitat for monarchs, but only if they are not mowed. In Minnesota most eggs are laid on the milkweeds in July and August, and once the eggs are hatched the adults rely on nectar of flowering plants through September. 46 Native Grasses & Wildflowers

Home And Garden Wildflower Mixtures These mixes contain 10 to 20 perennial and annual species providing natural beauty and pollinator habitat all season long. Plant 8-12 lbs. per acre or 4 oz. per 1000 sq. ft. into weed free soil in spring. A late fall dormant seeding is a second option. Weeds are inevitable during establishment and should be pulled or mowed off before they go to seed or become too competitive with the flowers. Mowing in the fall knocks the seed out of annual seed heads for self-sowing.

Wildlife
“We planted Buckshot August 8th. It was seeded, lightly dragged, then rolled, fertilized well and was green in a week. The deer didn’t use it too much through the summer but started to hit it hard after our first hard frost, which was expected. They loved the tops of the turnips and radishes. There were actually three bucks shot off that plot during first slug season.” Andrew Knudtson, Lake Mills, IA.
DIVERSE MIXES FOR GOOD STAND We specially formulate food plot mixes for every season and game. The high diversity in each mix ensures success for a good stand and attractiveness. Big Rack is the go-to perennial legume mix. Feather Flush is planted in late spring and will be sure to please turkey and pheasant appetites. For fall choose our Buckshot Brassica Mix or Frosty Suite winter grain mix for the ultimate hunting plot.
