FARM SEED GUIDE HOME OF VIKING CORN & SOYBEANS
YOU NEED MORE THAN SEED Support When You Need It: Meet our Agronomists!
Jake Hansen Corn & Soybean Product Manager & Conventional Agronomy
Bairet Eiter Cover Crops Lead & Organic Farming Support
Helping you farm profitably is the key to our continued growth and success. It is our guiding principle. And we understand that we need to provide more than seed if we are going to help you be successful. Quality seed of the right variety is just part of what you need. You need to know when, where, and how to plant new varieties, or even new species. You need support when you encounter new challenges in the field, whether it's weed and disease pressures or a late spring snow storm that forces replanting decisions. That's why we also invest in staff to help our customers succeed. When you call to ask which Viking corn hybrid will work best on your sandy ground or why your oats are short or which cover crop mix is best before soybeans, you're connecting with knowledgeable agronomists – all of them with on-farm experience. And, of course, we continually hear from farmers like you about what works and what doesn't. We maintain close relationships with universities and with organizations like Practical Farmers of Iowa. It's a strong network.
Margaret Smith Forage Agronomist
Matt Leavitt Organic & Transitional Farming Lead
As an example, that large network is buzzing around the topic of cover crops. Nearly every day we're learning (and sharing) something new about best practices and variety selection within cash crop rotations. They aren't a 'silver bullet', but they are proving to be another valuable tool in the farmer's toolbox.
On a personal note, this is our first Spring Catalog without George Ehrhardt, who passed away in August 2018. We strive to honor his memory by delivering quality seed and outstanding service to farmers. Albert Lea Seed is proud to help farmers like you address complex crop challenges while improving soil health and your bottom line. We sincerely thank you for your continued business, and we wish you a very successful 2019!

VIKING CONVENTIONAL CORN YIELDS! In spite of a tough Spring in 2018, Viking conventional non-traited corn hybrids performed well across the Midwest. In fact, Viking corn took four first-place finishes in FIRST Trials - and an additional 14 top-ten finishes. And, more often than not, Viking corn hybrids were consistently the highest-yielding non-traited hybrids for the trials in which they were entered.

GRAIN/SILAGE HYBRIDS Organic dual-purpose grain hybrids also produce exceptional quality and/ or tonnage for silage. We test our hybrids—in the field and the lab—for silage quantity and quality against leading silage hybrid genetics at similar maturities. Only those hybrids that show consistently excellent tonnage and quality get the GS designation. Why GS? Our GS hybrids are highyielding grain hybrids, resulting in a lot of grain for your silage, which means more energy. GS hybrids have an optimal grain-to-stover ratio and have excellent standability compared to low-lignin specialty silage hybrids.

Soybean seed increase in Chile, winter 2018.
ORGANIC & CONVENTIONAL SOYBEANS AND GMOS We understand that seed purity is extremely important to farmers growing grain for a Non-GMO contract. We have not only committed the Viking Brand to seed purity, we have made significant investments to establish the seed industry’s first Non-GMO Purity Guarantee. All Viking soybeans labeled with the Ultra-Pure label are guaranteed to be 99.9% GMO-free. We are able to meet this high standard on select soybean varieties through purification, isolation, and stringent testing. All Viking soybeans not labeled with Ultra-Pure are produced under the Minnesota Crop Improvement Association’s Non-GMO Seed Program, which traces, inspects, and verifies that the seed in the bag is 99.5% GMO-free. We do not guarantee that any of these varieties are 100% free of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). We do not guarantee that grain harvested from this seed will be marketable as non-GMO grain or meet contractual agreements. 22

On-Farm Organic Soybean Purity Inspections & Replicated Varietal Testing We are so pleased to have connected with organic farmers Sara and Bob Pearson of Prairie Sky Farm in Wesley, IA. (The photos on this page were taken at Prairie Sky Farm in October 2018.) The Pearsons are both experienced plant researchers, and they’ve helped purify soybean varieties for us. Last year, they grew single rows of six different soybean lines, pulled out offtypes, and tissue-tested each plant to eliminate any plants that tested positive for GMO. Sara told us, "those seed lots become like children to us." Now, that’s commitment! We then sent that pure seed to a company in Chile that specializes in Identity-Preserved seed production. They grew little half-acre fields of these six varieties, which we had tested, and all six lines were 0.0% GMO. This seed became the pure source we used to produce registered seed. It’s a slow, cumbersome process, but these efforts mean that farmers will have more Ultra-Pure soybean seed for 2020 planting. The Pearsons also helped us establish our first in-house organic soybean replicated trials on their organic farm, the results of which will help us identify soybean varieties that perform well in organic farming systems.

ALFALFA ALFALFA VARIETY SELECTION
When selecting an alfalfa variety, the key considerations are: how long will the field be in production, how many cuttings a year do you plan to take, what is the end use for the forage (quality needs), and what are the unique challenges for the field location (disease / insects)?
ALFALFA VARIETY KEY CHARACTERISTICS HD: Highly Digestible Alfalfa lines with the HD distinction are tested for quality from the very first selection by the breeders. These lines have low lignin levels resulting in milk/ton numbers that are first in class. HQ: High Quality Highest quality alfalfa lines from WL, one of the largest alfalfa breeding programs in the world. AP: Aphanomyces Race 2 Resistance Farmers in northeast Iowa, southeast Minnesota, and southwest Wisconsin face challenges with Aphanomyces root rot in alfalfa. If you are in one of these regions choose a variety with race 2 Aphanomyces resistance. These varieties also have resistance to race 1. LH: Leaf Hopper Resistance These varieties maintain strong yields and forage quality under heavy pressure from leafhoppers.
ALFALFA: PLANTING BEST PRACTICES Seed alfalfa into a firm seed bed ¼-inch to ½-inch deep. Spring seeding: April 15 to May 15 (southern Minnesota) Fall seeding: August 1 to 15. Adjust these dates accordingly further north and south. Plant 15-20 lbs/acre for alfalfa alone; 15 lbs/acre mixed with grasses

IMPROVE ALFALFA HAY AND HAYLAGE University of Minnesota field tests show that seeding an alfalfa/grass mix comprised of 30% to 40% grasses achieves higher yields in the final stand. In fact, orchardgrass or tall fescue mixtures with alfalfa had approximately 15% more milk production potential per acre compared to alfalfa alone. ALFALFA-GRASS MIXTURE OPTIONS See premixed options in our Hay & Pasture Mixes section or individual grass varieties in the Cool Season Grasses section. Ask about our custom mixing! BENEFITS OF ALFALFA-GRASS MIXTURES • Yield. Alfalfa-grass mixtures will often provide greater yield than direct-seeded alfalfa.
Optimum pH: 6.7 - 6.9 (soil test and lime accordingly 12 months prior to seeding)
• Drying rate. Grasses like orchardgrass, tall fescue, meadow fescue, smooth bromegrass, and timothy increase hay drying rates.
Maintain phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) at optimal levels throughout life of stand. Soil test in fall and supplement as needed.
• Weed suppression. Grasses provide competition and cover to edge out weeds.
• Feeding value. Grasses add higher fiber (NDF) digestibility than alfalfa which increases relative forage quality (RFQ).

*Variety not stated Winter Survival Index (WSI)—Measures ability to withstand severe winters. Varieties are rated from 1 (superior) to 4 (adequate). If a variety does not have a WSI rating, you can use the Fall Dormancy as a guide. The most persistent alfalfas are those with low WSIs and good pest and disease resistance. Fall Dormancy (FD)—The measure of how tall an alfalfa plant grows after the last cutting and before going dormant for the season. An alfalfa with a lower number goes dormant earlier in the fall. A higher number indicates later dormancy, faster regrowth after cutting. Disease Resistance Index (DRI)—30 = highest, 6 = lowest
Disease & Pest Resistance—Poorly drained fields require alfalfas with better disease resistance (especially Phytophthora and Aphanomyces). Select varieties with superior disease resistance to ensure a long, productive stand. Resistance HR = Highly Resistant R = Resistant MR = Moderately Resistant LR = Low Resistance S = Susceptible Forage Quality—Varieties with a high Relative Feed Quality (RFQ) are designated with either HQ or HD (WL 365HQ & Viking 372HD).

Adaptation: Well adapted to all soils, productive all summer long. Management: This mix should be grazed or cut prior to the grass heading out. Slower to dry when used for dry hay. Planting Date: April - May, August 1 - 25 Seeding: 25-30 lbs/acre straight or 5-25 lbs/acre with a legume or legume mix. Drill or broadcast and roll. Plant ¼ in. to ½ in. deep. • 10% Smooth Bromegrass* • 20% Meadow Fescue* • 20% Cowgirl Tall Fescue • 10% Fleet Meadow Brome • 20% Spring Green Festulolium • 20% Sierra Perennial Ryegrass Conventional $2.20/lb. $55/25 lb bag
Hay Grass Mix #2
A mix of improved grass varieties with excellent persistence, palatability, and tonnage. Three species mix for maximum versatility. Adding grass to your alfalfa hay consistently gives you higher yields, less crown loss due to winterkill, less insect pressure and better erosion control. Best Use: Best suited as a high quality alfalfa companion. Adaptation: Well adapted to all types of soils. Management: Cut hay based on grass maturity, not alfalfa for maximum feed value. Especially important for first cutting in spring as grass will mature ahead of alfalfa. Cut higher than you would straight alfalfa (3 to 4 inches). Planting Date: April - May, August 1 - 25 Seeding: 25-30 lbs/acre straight or 5-10 lbs/acre with alfalfa or legume mix. Drill or broadcast and roll. Plant ¼ in. to ½ in. deep. • 40% STF-43 Tall Fescue Blend • 30% Elise Orchardgrass • 30% Fleet Meadow Bromegrass Conventional $2.80/lb. $70/25 lb bag
Milkway Mix
Combination of improved Barenbrug tall fescues and meadow fescues. Milkway is the ideal grass blend for total mix ration (TMR) silage production for highproducing dairy cows. It provides stable NDF and NDFd throughout the season so the dairyman can pack different cuttings in the same bunk. Milkway grass blend in dairy TMR can improve milk production 5-15% over traditional wheat straw diets. Best Use: Suited as an alfalfa companion for dairy production. Adaptation: Well adapted to all types of soils. Management: Cut hay based on grass maturity, not alfalfa for maximum feed value. Cut higher than straight alfalfa (3 to 4 inches).

COOL SEASON GRASSES Orchardgrass A bunch-type, tall-growing, cool-season perennial grass. One of the most commonly used and productive cool season grasses, tolerant to shade, fairly drought resistant with good winter hardiness. Regrows quickly and is a common component in pasture and hay mixtures. Best Use: Suitable for hay or pasture. Begin grazing at 6-8”; stop when grass gets to 3-4”. Adaptation: Better adapted to well-drained soils and is especially well adapted to mixes with legumes such as alfalfa or red clover. Management: Generally persists longer than most cool-season grasses in frequently cut, properly managed alfalfa mixtures. Close grazing in the fall is consistently associated with winter-kill so leave 3-4”. High palatability in all classes of livestock makes it susceptible to over-grazing. Minimum required regrowth period of no less than 28 days when rotational grazing. Planting Date: March-May, August 15-31 Seeding: 8-12 lbs/ac alone or 3-5 lbs/ac in a mix Suggestions: For mixes with alfalfa, carefully select both varieties: alfalfa variety should be a quick recovery type (high FD) to compete with fast-growing orchardgrass. Select latermaturing orchardgrass varieties (HLR, Elise, Luxor, or Niva) for alfalfa mixes.

Bromegrasses A leafy, deep-rooted, sod-forming, very persistent perennial grass. Forage quality compares with other cool-season grasses. Matures later in the spring than orchardgrass and makes less summer growth, but is much more winter hardy. Best Use: Suitable for hay or long-term pasture. Adaptation: Grows best on well-drained siltloam or clay-loam soils. Management: Slow to establish; rarely provides a productive crop until second year. Begin grazing at 8-10”. Stop when grass is 4”. Optimal re-growth period of 28-35 days between grazing. Low tolerance to 3- and 4-cut hay systems. Survives but goes dormant during drought and temperature extremes. In a pure stand, requires early spring and fall applications of N to maintain high yields . Planting Date: March-May, August 1-31 Seeding: 15 lbs/ac alone or 2-5 lbs/ac w/ alfalfa. Suggestions: Seed meadow brome or Alaska brome for haying applications, smooth brome for long-term pastures.

www.alseed.com Timothy A shallow-rooted, perennial, cool-season grass well adapted to the Upper Midwest. Very winter hardy and very palatable. Best Use: Better for hay crop than as a pasture species. Usually mixed with alfalfa or clover for hay or pasture. Preferred grass in horse hay. Frost seeds fairly well. Adaptation: Best production is on heavy ground and cooler climates. Management: Shallow root system makes it a poor choice on droughty soils. Sensitive to high temperatures, so mid-summer regrowth may be limited. Planting Date: March-May, August 1-31 Seeding: 8 lbs/acre alone or 1-2 lbs/acre in a mix.

Tall Fescue The best companion grass with alfalfa because they establish and mature at similar rates. It is a deep rooted, hardy, bunch-type grass. Its extensive root system helps it withstand drought conditions. It is more productive in midsummer than brome. All of our tall fescue varieties are endophyte-free. New varieties have finer, softer leaves, a trait that improves palatability and digestibility. Can provide 2-3 cuttings of hay annually. Very tolerant of intensive grazing. Best Use: Suitable for hay or pasture. Can be seeded in pure stands or with other grasses or legumes. Ideal for winter stockpiling as cut hay or pasture. Begin grazing at 6"-8" and remove animals when grass is down to 3"-4". Adaptation: Adapted to all soil types from drought-prone to poorly drained & wet soil. Management: When used as an alfalfa companion, time the first cutting according to fescue maturity, rather than the alfalfa. The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th cuttings can be timed with the alfalfa. Planting Date: March-May, August 1-31 Seeding: 20-25 lbs/acre alone or 4-12 lbs/ acre in a mix. Suggestions: Seed meadow fescue with tall fescue to improve palatability in pasture mixes.

Meadow Fescue Highly productive, winter-hardy, perennial bunch grass with long and slender, bright green, and succulent leaves. Softer-leaved and more palatable than tall fescue. More persistent than perennial ryegrass with equal nutrition but stronger summer production under hot, dry conditions. Best Use: Long-term pasture mixes or alfalfa companion. Begin grazing at 6-8”and remove animals when the grass is down to 3-4”. Adaptation: Grows in cool, moist conditions, and tolerates wet soils with occasional flooding. Can reach 30” tall in rich soil. Management: While yield may be less than tall fescue, animal intake and performance should be higher due to increased palatability. Planting Date: March-May, Aug. 1-31 Seeding: 20 lbs/acre alone or 6-12 lbs/acre in a mix. Suggestions: Include meadow fescue in any mixture for hay or pasture to improve palatability and tonnage.

Italian Ryegrass Quick re-growth, early spring development and prolonged fall growing. High quality forage without low-quality stems and seed heads: will not head out in the seeding year unless a hard freeze sets in after seed has germinated. Behaves as an annual in the Upper Midwest. Recognized as excellent rotation crop for plowdown or emergency feed. Best Use: Best suited as a pasture crop seeded at full rate. When seeded at lower rate, can be used in hay mixtures and as a nurse crop for alfalfa seedings. Adaptation: Best on heavier, moisture-holding soils. Keep off of droughty ground. Management: Begin grazing at 4"-6" and stop when the grass is down to 2"-3". Planting Date: March-May, Aug. 1-15 (for late fall grazing). Seeding: 30-35 lbs/acre alone or 4-5 lbs/acre as alfalfa cover crop. Suggestions: Use instead of small grain as cover crop over new alfalfa seedings. Can produce up to half ton more of additional hay in seeding year than a small grain. Seeding heavier than recommended amount may smother alfalfa seeding. Seed early spring onto pasture that has been closely grazed the previous fall to improve yield and quality.

www.alseed.com Kentucky Bluegrass A short-to-medium height, long-lived, highly palatable, perennial grass. It spreads via rhizomes to form a dense sod. Pastures composed of Kentucky bluegrass mixed with legumes have higher nutritional values than pure grass pastures. Best Use: Ideal for permanent pastures that are continuously grazed. It tolerates close and frequent grazing better than other cool-season forage grasses. Adaptation: Grows best during cool, moist weather on well-drained, fertile soils. Management: It is slightly slower to establish than many other cool-season grasses. However, once established, it spreads quickly via extensive rhizome production. Planting Date: March-May, Aug. 15-31 Seeding: 30 lbs/acre alone for pasture or 4-10 lbs/acre in a mix. 100-150 lbs alone for lawns.

Organic Oat/4010 Peas Mixture in Freedom, WI. (June 2018)
FIELD PEAS & PEA MIXTURES Field Peas
Winter Peas
Field peas are planted early, grow tall and leafy, and are tolerant to frost & drought. They can be harvested for silage, pasture, hay, or grain. When grown in mixture with small grains, peas add tremendous quality and increase the protein content in forage. Best Use: Forage or grain Requirements: Avoid wet ground. Prefers cool weather. Reduce planting rates when using as a cover crop for alfalfa. Use inoculant on virgin ground. Management: Begin grazing at 4"-6"and stop when the grass is down to 2"-3". Planting Date: March - April or Aug 15 - Sept 10 Seeding: 50-75 lbs/acre along with 75-100 lbs/acre of small grain for forage or 150200 lbs/acre alone for grain. Plant deep and early. Inoculate before planting.
Hampton Field Peas
• Dual-purpose green field pea • Good choice for grain or forage • Medium height, good standing • Very high grain yields • 2,300 seeds per/lb Conventional Uncertified $20/50 lb bag
DS Admiral Field Pea
• Leafy, speckled forage specific pea • Significantly more biomass than DS Admiral Conventional Uncertified $19/50 lb bag
• Tried and true dual-purpose yellow pea for grain or forage • Upright, tall and better standing than most other varieties • Broadly adapted with consistent above average yields • Unmatched food quality because of near perfect round shape Conventional Certified $20/50 lb bag
Organic & Uncertified $26/50 lb bag
Organic & Certified $26/50 lb bag
4010 Field Peas*
Pea Mixes
Small grain and pea mixtures provide excellent forage quality and tonnage (see chart on page 51). The small grain allows the peas to stand more erect making them easier to harvest. Sometimes used as a cover crop for spring-seeded alfalfa to maximize forage production in the seeding year. Can yield 2-4 tons DM/acre. Grows best in cool weather. Best Use: Best suited as a pasture crop seeded at full rate. Drill in early spring to make silage or baleage. In recent years some producers have also tried it as a fall forage (drilled in late July or early August and chopped in October). Requirements: Cannot be used for dry hay. Maximum forage value when small grain is chopped for silage in boot stage. Tonnage will increase as grain heads out, but quality and regrowth will diminish. Protein ranges from 14% to 19%. Management: Begin grazing at 4"-6"and stop when the grass is down to 2"-3". Planting Date: Mar. to Apr. 30 or July 25-Aug. 15 Seeding: Drill 100-150 lbs/acre about 1” deep in early spring. Definitely use the lighter rate if underseeding with alfalfa in the spring.
Barley*/DS Admiral Field Pea
• 60/40 mix of peas and 6-row barley • Swath and combine to produce animal feed with higher protein than small grain alone • For silage try triticale/pea or oat/pea for higher tonnage • Larger pea requires heavier seeding rate of 150-200 lbs/ac Organic
$25/50 lb bag

Viney, low-growing, cool-season annual legume. Excellent forage quality for livestock & deer. Commonly used as a cover crop; can withstand colder temperatures in the fall compared to field peas. Can produce up to 2-4 tons dry matter/acre. Pea residue breaks down quickly. Austrian winter peas can provide from 90 to 150 lbs nitrogen/acre. Best Use: Forage, silage, or cover crop/plow down Requirements: Prefers cool weather and welldrained soils. Does not tolerate acidic soils. Management: Begin grazing at 4"-6"and stop when the grass is down to 2"-3". Planting Date: March - April or Aug - Sept. If spring seeding, seed as early as possible. Seeding: 50-100 lbs/acre drilled. 1-2” deep. Inoculate before planting.
Austrian Winter Pea*
• Can withstand temperatures as low as 10°F with minor injury • Does not overwinter in areas colder than Hardiness Zone 6. Not reliably winter hardy in MN/WI/SD. • Sensitive to heat and humidity Conventional $28/50 lb bag Organic

Ancient Heirloom Grains Identify your market before planting and plan ahead! Emmer and Einkorn thresh with the hulls intact (like oats). Most milling and malting markets will require the grain be dehulled before accepting, so have a plan for dehulling yourself. However, if you plan to save grain for seed, store with the hull intact. Dehulled grain quickly loses its viability to germinate. • Avoid excess nitrogen fertilizer and keep off deep, rich soils to avoid lodging. • Plant 100-150 lbs per acre at 1” deep in the spring. • Because the seeds are planted with attached hulls, watch for flowability issues through the drill. • Swathing/windrowing may be a better choice than direct harvest due to lodging risk. • Expected dehulled grain yields may be as high as 50 bushels per acre.

• Diploid type, the oldest of the ancient wheats • Smallest seed size of the ancient wheats • Higher protein, beta carotene, lutein, and micronutrients compared to modern wheat • Because of lower gluten levels, bread made with einkorn flour will not rise as much as that made with modern wheat • Flavorful! • Though it is not gluten free, some with sensitivity to gluten find that they are able to digest einkorn • Low yield, but can survive on poor, marginal soils • Tetraploid, ancient relative of modern wheat • Large, plump, and highly aromatic grain • When dehulled and cooked whole, this is the wheat most commonly called farro • Gluten content can vary; higher in protein and antioxidants than traditional wheat • Usually has higher mineral content, higher fiber and a lower glycemic index than modern wheat • Higher yielding than einkorn. • Good disease resistance • Heritage variety with taller growth habit and late maturity • Tall height shades out weeds better than modern varieties • Can tolerate poor soils because of a bigger root system • Unique, rich, and complex flavor and excellent baking qualities

LEGUMES & BRASSICAS RED CLOVER Red clover establishes easily and rapidly, but it isn’t as drought-tolerant or winter-hardy as alfalfa. Best Use: Pasture, haylage, dry hay or cover crop Adaptation: Red clover grows on wet and low pH soils that won’t support alfalfa. Better adapted to heavier soils. Pasture & Hay • Difficult to dry as hay but improved varieties (Ruby Red, Freedom) dry down faster • Can cause livestock bloat when heavy stands are grazed Planting Date: February - May, July 15 - August 30. Can be frost-seeded. Seeding: 8-12 lbs/acre straight; 2-5 lbs/acre in a mix. Drill or broadcast and roll. Plant ¼ in. to ½ in. deep. Cutting/Grazing • Medium red clovers recover after being cut; however, mammoth red clover will not • Don't cut after September 1 in the seeding year to allow for overwintering

White Dutch Clover* TRAFFIC TOLERANT • Low-growing clover; good traffic tolerance and persistence • Usable as living mulch in orchards and vegetable gardens • Avoid dry soils Conventional $3.80/lb $190/50 lb bag
6 Benefits of White Clover as a Cover Crop Fixes Nitrogen – ~80-130 lbs N per acre. Resilient – Most resilient of the clover genus. Withstands mowing and high traffic areas. Soil Compaction – Very thick and interconnected root system breaks up soil compaction.
White clover is a perennial legume that is more persistent than red clover. It can withstand heavy field traffic and thrive under shady, moist conditions. Types: Cultivars of white clover are grouped by plant height and leaf size. • White Dutch is short growing but has the greatest persistence and winter hardiness. • New Zealand is intermediate in height, flowers profusely and has some heat tolerance. • Ladino fixes the most nitrogen, is taller and higher yielding, but less persistent than White Dutch. Best Use: Excellent choice for beef or dairy pastures to increase productivity, palatability, intake, protein, and energy. Can be used as a living mulch. Adaptation: Widely adapted, easy to establish, and prefers medium to heavy soils. Avoid droughty soils. Pasture & Hay • Not a good choice for horse pastures. Can cause bloat. • Most white clovers are aggressive; keep seeding rates low.
Grazing – Palatable with a protein content of ~28 percent.
Planting Date: February – May, July 15 – August 30. Can be frost-seeded.
Erosion Prevention – Extensive root system and ground cover keep soil in place.
Seeding: 6-8 lbs/acre straight or 1-3 lbs/acre in a mix. Drill or broadcast. Do not plant deeper than ¼ in. Smaller seed than red clover.
Organic $6.90/lb $172.50/25 lb bag
Weed Suppression – Large root system and biomass production competes well even in adverse conditions.

Brassicas are a genus of plants in the mustard family (Brassicaceae), also known as cruciferous vegetables or cole crops. More than 30 wild species and hybrids are in cultivation, plus numerous cultivars and hybrids of cultivated origin. Almost all parts of cultivated species contain nutritional value, including the root, stems, leaves, flowers, buds, and seeds. They provide high amounts of vitamin C and soluble fiber. Best Uses • Used to lengthen the grazing season. All brassicas have highly digestible cell walls and very high protein levels. • Excellent for cover cropping (typically as part of a mix). High dry matter production both above and below ground builds organic matter in the soil.
• Good choice for low fertility ground
• Used in deer food plots for their high palatability and late-season Conventional $1.50/lb $75/50 lb bag availability. Organic $2.40/lb $120/50 lb bag

WARM SEASON FORAGES SORGHUM-SUDANGRASS A hybrid cross between sorghum and sudangrass; intermediate in size and yield. Fast-growing, highly productive, multi-cut annual grass bred to maximize summer forage. Can grow 8’ tall if left uncut. Protein can reach 14% but has less energy than corn silage, because it lacks grain. Best Use: Best suited for grazing, green chop, baleage, or silage. Adaptation: Good soils, but is drought tolerant. Likes hot weather. All hybrids we sell are resistant to downy mildew and anthracnose. Management • Harvest between 40”-50” (boot stage) for highest quality feed. • Cut 6” above ground for best regrowth. Larger stems make drying for hay more difficult than for sudangrass. • High planting rates produce finer stems which dry better with increased quality.

BMR Genes for Lower Lignin Levels With reduced lignin content, Brown Midrib (BMR) forage hybrids can be identified by a light to dark brown tint in the stalk and leaf midrib. BMR genes 6 and 12 limit certain enzyme activity that results in about one-third lower forage lignin levels when compared to non-BMR cultivars. These genes, altered with traditional plant breeding techniques, result in the characteristic brown leaf midrib in corn, millets, and sorghum. The BMR 12 gene confers higher carbohydrate levels, slightly lower protein levels and higher whole plant digestibility compared with the BMR 6 gene.

Shade-tolerant blend of organic cover crop species formulated for seeding at last cultivation in corn (~V6 stage). • Excellent small seeded mix for companion planting with corn at last cultivation (~June) • With adequate moisture, will emerge and stay semi-dormant until corn crop starts dying back in fall. Will not impede growth or harvest of corn. • Not recommended for interseeding into soybeans as soybean canopy is too shady • Adapted to many soil types but best suited for medium to heavy textured soils; will likely struggle on sandy soils without irrigation
Mixture specifically formulated for costeffective biomass production for fall grazing. Oats and barley consistently produce the most fall tonnage in the Upper Midwest. Kale and turnips diversify this blend and add highly digestible protein and is palatable late into the fall. • High seeds/lb. & low cost make this an easy choice for fall forage • Well adapted to varied soil types & seeding methods • Excellent fit after hayfield termination, small grains, sweet corn, or silage corn • Grazing livestock often will paw bulbs out of the ground after a frost • Winterkills in Upper Midwest • Not a good fit after full-season grain corn or soybeans Planting Date: Aug. 1 – Sept. 15 Seeding: 75-100 lbs. /acre at 1⁄4 to 1⁄ 2 in. deep.
