So… what is this? I’ve always had an interest in layout design, and I just really wanted to conceptualize one of my ideas. I did not realize how simple it was to publish online, and this really gave me the push to create a zine myself. Honestly, this entire process came into fruition as a result of my boredom this summer. I admit that I am not the strongest writer, so I am FOUNDER EDITOR-IN-CHIEF + DESIGNER appreciative of all the help from my talented friends. This entire issue contains some of my all time favorite songs and artists, but I have so much more content that extends beyond this. Hopefully there will be more issues to come and this concept won’t end at this issue, or better yet get to volume 2. My greatest hope is that you find a new artist to listen to when you read through this. I hope you discover a new favorite song of your own that you can associate your own personal memories with.

VIVID VISIONS
Nick Hakim “Cold Where Will We Go Pt. 1
Interpretation 1: Sitting by the fire with a hot beverage during the holidays while it is snowing outside. Peaceful and cozy. Interpretation 2: A couple going from a nice candle lit dinner out together to laughing and slow dancing in their kitchen before slowly retreating up the stairs.
8
Glass Animals “Gooey ZABA
Interpretation 1: A neon rainforest with glowing geckos and leopards. Purposefully trippy. Interpretation 2: A beautiful woman emerging from a tub, the water clinging to her skin as she runs her hands down her hair. She gets out and shrugs on a silk robe before sensually walking around the lux, penthouse apartment before laying on the bed and enjoying herself. 9
Cold War Kids “Hospital Beds Robbers & Cowards
Interpretation 1: Everything is in black and white. Alone in a prairie field with overgrown grass up to your knees. Interpretation 2: Protesters marching through the streets, young and old all unified under one cause; proud, confident, and unwavering.

Alex Crossan, more commonly known as Mura Masa, is a Londonbased electronic producer known for his use of eclectic sounds and instruments. Though he is still an up-andcoming artist, Crossan has managed to land several big names to feature on tracks on his self-titled debut. This is a testament to the fresh appeal of his musical style.
Prior to Mura Masa,
Crossan released a handful of EPs and singles featuring vocals from a range of smaller names, including soulful and funky NAO and new-wave electronic pop artist Shura. Though their vocal styles are at opposite ends of the spectrum, Crossan manages to make those differences the focal point by putting his own spin on their sounds. In the latter track, “Love For That,” amidst cuts and samples of Shura’s vocals, Crossan intertwines warm strings with reverberating flutes and bells. His instrumentation is completely different in “Firefly,” the track he birthed with NAO, which features chimes and bells alongside wooden xylophone and marimba sounds.
The extensive range of instruments in Mura Masa’s employ is the most significant commonality across his releases. The same bits of marimba riffs from “Firefly” can be found in songs on the self-titled record like “What if I Go?” featuring Bonzai. He brings back the flutes in “Second 2 None” featuring Christine & The Queens. New instrumentation like the use of bouncy steel drums and shimmering synths can be heard in tracks like “1 Night.” Over the past five years, Crossan has become wellrecognized for his unique style of production and arrangement, setting himself up for nothing but success. The debut album featuring A-List artists such as A$AP Rocky, Desiigner, and Charli XCX has charted on the Billboard 200.

R AT I N G S U M M ARY Production: Crossan’s use of an array of instruments including Japanese flutes, steel drums, and refreshing synths is unmistakable in itself. His ability to mix the hodgepodge of sounds with very current percussive kicks and snares is evidence of his impeccable skill.
5/5
Lyrics: Unlike the dance anthems relentlessly played in circles on air, the lyricists highlighted on Mura Masa have poured their heartfelt experiences and depicted scenes from days in their life into these tracks. Crossan does, in instances, fall victim to the repetitive nature of lyrics in dance music, but otherwise, he and his peers have managed to focus their words to match the production.

STANDOUT SONGS lotus eater
This song has been sampled and added onto many DJ sets. The track highlights the Asian soundscapes he typically pairs with his beats. The main flute was not even sampled. He wrote that portion.
love$ick ft. a$ap rocky Although the original song appeared on this previous album, Someday Somewhere, adding a$ap rocky to the remix was the perfect cherry on top to make this a standout song.
messy love
While most of this album has a lot of collaborations with other artists, I think one of the underrated songs is MM's opening track that really features his own personal talent and style.

Healy, first name Ethan. Based in Memphis, Tennessee.
RECOMMENDED TRACKS 1. TUCSON 2. Unwind 3. $150 / roll widdit Reckless 4. winse (feat. YOG$) 5. Chaparral 6. LFTM (feat. Felly) 7. No Vacation / Outside Dem My Dogs 8. shalom (feat. PLC)
Each song consists of half mellow rap, half singing, and all Healy. With nostalgic vibes and a mellow voice, the rolling beats lend perfectly to the tone of Healy's voice. He may be bordering on beach house but there is something about the way that the verses and vocals flow together that make him a genresplitter. The mix of Producer YOG$'s beats and Healy's talent comes out to an honest match made in heaven.
