EDITOR'S WORD

For Volume 2 Issue 5 !

Sometimes I question why I even do this. I thought that with my new internship, I'd be inspired to create more, design more, or work harder. Instead I've found myself making excuses to not design on my free time since I already do it all day. My productivity and motivation usually derives from a lot of different places. This is the first time I've found myself in a rut with no Jessica Wei legitimate excuse like school to bail myself out. However, I know I can always count on music to bail me out of any negative headspace I'm in. I mean thats why I even do this. I absoutely did take more risks in the sense of designing without a purpose or content in mind. A lot them don't even make any sort of sense, not even to me, oops. Thanks for readin' n supportin'. Mad love to you all.

ALBUMANALYSIS august 10 2018

KHAN

The name Ben Khan is one you’ll definitely be hearing more of in the near future. The underground electronic artist released his first debut full-length record on August 10th; his first since 2015. The intensely experimental sound coupled with his vibrant and complex visuals work together to build, not only a soundscape, but an entire universe. Khan’s sound has always been unique as he couples wobbly synths with flanging guitars and bass lines that shake your car mirrors. His 2015 EP, entitled 1000, incorporated the most unexpected sounds that somehow worked. He uses cowbell heavily in the same song that utilizes a hi-hat and snare heavy drum part, sultry vocals, and guitar riffs that are reminiscent of 70’s disco and funk. However, with his debut release, he completely turned the tables. From the very first track on his self-titled LP, you can hear how much Khan has honed his skills in production and built his own sound. “2000 angels” includes the same interesting synths and guitars that were present on 1000, but they’ve become much more intentional and match the intensity of his raspy vocals. As the lyrics say, you can “feel it in [your] belly, feel it in [your] soul.”

Yet, amongst this chaos, if you zoom out and let your ears take you where they may, you can almost follow a path that the Englishman has laid down. The key is to listen to the elements he introduces one at a time and, at the end, you’ll find that he has built up a new planet of sound for you to visit and learn from. As he comes into his own as an artist, we’re learning that Ben Khan’s music is just a new world that we’re all living in.

ARTIST rialda mustic / WRITER YARYN CHOI

Khan’s sound has always been unique as he couples wobbly synths with flanging guitars and bass lines that shake your car mirrors. His 2015 EP, entitled 1000, incorporated the most unexpected sounds that somehow worked. He uses cowbell heavily in the same song that utilizes a hi-hat and snare heavy drum part, sultry vocals, and guitar riffs that are reminiscent of 70’s disco and funk. However, with his debut release, he completely turned the tables. Khan tones down the production and gives you a chance to breathe with songs like “ruby” and “the green.” He distorts his vocal with a complex rack of effects, managing to make the listener feel as though his voice is spin-ning in circles around their head. This creates heavy contrast with the instrumentation, which tends to be more focused on a simple but catchy bass-line. By creating that juxtaposition, he gives our ears a break and prepares us for the more experimental tracks. The organized chaos that round out a Ben Khan universe is showcased in tracks like “monsoon daydream,” “dntwnturluv…,” “merchant prince,” and “waterfall." It’s almost hard to listen at first, solely because your ears don’t know what to focus on. The dizzying drum parts into which he slips new samples and elements constantly— some samples sound, to me, like a can opening or crumpling paper— or the wobbly, effervescent synths.

Though this release was much more experimental and eccentric than his prior works, Khan’s sound has become much more intentional and cohesive. Production:

CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY STYLE? Urban romanticism. I hope that my photos can encapsulate the energy of youthfulness and love that I find everyday across the city. I’m purely creating as a way of documenting the adventures that I find myself apart of, whether it be running down a subway tunnel or shooting a music festival, these are all just small moments that I shoot to remember what my 20-year-old self was doing on a day to day.

WHAT PROJECTS DO YOU HAVE COMING UP? I recently created a series called Chop It Up for Universal Music Group where I’ve been interviewing artists in an open door helicopter above NYC, asking them vulnerable questions while they hang out of the chopper. The first episode for that just dropped. I also am working on a few music videos and continuing to go out and shoot the streets of NYC every day.

22 “DOWNTOWN”

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO CREATE? Photography and filmmaking saved my life at some of my lowest moments and it’s given me some of my best. Since I found it, it’s all I’ve wanted to do and that’s best way I can describe it really.

“CITY HALL”

STARTING OUT, WHAT WERE SOME OF YOUR BIGGEST MISTAKES? When I first started shooting, I reached out to a lot of people, pretty much everyone that inspired me when I first picked up a camera. I had the right idea by trying to connect with my inspirations, and I still do that today, but the way I went about it was all wrong. I asked them to take me along to certain places where they shot, instead of going out and discovering them on my own. Now that I’m fortunate enough to be in a position where people who are starting out send me messages, I can still see people do it the right way and the wrong way. I highly encourage anyone who’s starting out to send their inspirations messages, but make sure its in a respectful way that doesn’t ask for anything aside from advice.

IN THIS DAY AND AGE WHERE EVERYONE HAS ACCESS TO A CAMERA, WHAT DO YOU THINK

SETS YOU APART?

I think that what sets me apart as an artist is my fluidity between the different mediums. I started as a landscape photographer, but now spend most of my creative energy capturing photographs and behind the scenes moments with artists. However, that fluidity that helps me stand out is a double-edged sword because

WHAT INSPIRED YOUR @FLASHING.LIGHTS HOW DOES IT TIE IN WITH YOUR PERSONAL BRAND? Back when I first started posting my rooftop photographs on Instagram in 2014, the police were cracking down on anyone in the rooftopping scene. They were calling people, showing up to houses, and pulling people into the stations for interviews about how they were able to access these fragile, liminal spaces across the city. If you made your account in that period, then you had to make a moniker and protect your identity so you wouldn’t be a target of law enforcement. The way I came up with Flashing Lights was because at the time was in high school when I first started taking the train from New Jersey to NYC to shoot. The train ride would take an hour at least and I would only be able to make it in after dark on the weekdays. Almost all of my photos from the first six months of shooting were at night time and I thought flashing lights was a cool way to reference my original nighttime style and also give a little nod to the police force that I was trying to avoid by using the secret name.

24

“...in the

art world everyone is looking for someone’s niche and hoping to align their branding with that artist's look .

When you’re making music videos, shooting street photos, and covering concerts, then it’s hard to be known as that person for any one thing, but I much rather continue to explore the art world and continue to walk through whatever door I found open that looks like fun.. Maybe in a few years I’ll find the one thing that does it for me, but knowing myself, I doubt it.

WHAT GEAR DO YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO HAVE WITH YOU? A Vivitar Point and Shoot

from 1984. Its technically a terrible camera but its quick, small, and gives a really unique look that I love.

WHAT GOES INTO PREPARATION FOR A SHOOT? Lots of preproduction no matter what kind of shoot it is. If it’s a rooftop, then we research the building to death so we know how to get in, what stairs to take, and what visibility levels are. For a film shoot its weeks of location scouting, structural planning, and working through the concept until its solid.

WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN A PERFECT SHOT? OR WHAT STANDS OUT TO YOU? Anything unique, with the age of Instagram there’s a lot of similarity in style and composition. It’s impossible to avoid that with how saturated the photography community has become, but it just pushes everyone harder to step outside the box.

With fast-tracked banger, “Caroline," it was

easy to assume that Aminé would remain in

the industry as a one-hitter. He quickly proved

everyone wrong by dropping successful project,

Good For You. Even following that album, Aminé

would go on to drop iconic singles and a surprise

EPLPMixtapeAlbum. Bossed up moves like this prove that Aminé is not falling off the grid as a onehit-wonder anytime soon. Dropping ONEPOINTFIVE unexpectedly was a smart move. By doing so, he was able to pack an ever bigger punch. Aminé certainly is not one to back down or be afraid to put a lil glitter on the lids. He is unapogetically himself in his vision of his style and music.

FESTIVAL RECAP

BLURRY VISION IN OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA WILL BE FOREVER FROZEN IN TIME IN MY MIND. From the stacked line-up to the unique venue location, it was that weekend’s mecca for hip-hop pop culture. Everywhere you looked, there were people making fashion statements; Supreme bags and Yeezy sneakers flooded the fan pits. Whether you were with a significant other, or with a group of friends, the music was loved by all. While in the pit, all hate seemed to fade. All there was, was love and happiness because of the music, and I think those are the qualities that make the Bay Area a gem.

32

LINEUP OVERVIEW SATURDAY

SUNDAY

With BROCKHAMPTON’s set, the mosh-pits seemed to never stop since they brought so much energy to the crowd.

It would have been amazing to see him perform with Sango. Nonetheless, Xavier Omär reached every note with his impressive vocal range.

Due to family reasons, Smino‘s scheduled performance was replaced by Juice WRLD’s set and he really held his own even though he wasn’t on the roster. Isaiah Rashad's flow and natural rhyme schemes electrified and hyped everyone up for the later sets. Joji's performance was extremely entertaining to watch with his persona was shining through with phrases “WHATS UP BAY AREAAAA” and “unblock me b*tch.”

HEADLINER: SZA Everyone was hyped for headliner SZA. When she popped up on stage, it was pure chaos! The crowd was pushing forward trying to get closer to the goddess. She had everyone singing along as she performed her hits like Supermodel and Wavy. No one was expecting Isaiah Rashad to surprise her to perform Pretty Little Birds so everyone was happy with the surprise appearance. It also ended up being one of SZA’s last performances before her vocal cord damage scare Her set was the highlight of the day and waiting was definitely worth it.

NxWorries created a soulful yet funky vibe of R&B that had you grooving with the beat. It was Healy’s first festival performance (his birthday was also the next day!) and he killed it as a newcomer. His flow was impressive to hear live. The headliner Migos brought forth a performance filled with many of their classics that resonated well with the crowd.

UP N COMING: TEMPOREX

The crowd started off small but the most dedicated fans showed up early! We were able to see Temporex front and center as he played his upbeat songs like Nice Boys. Temporex mentioned that he made his own graphics, proving he’s talented in other areas besides music. He would talk to his fans during songs which made his set even more personal and enjoyable. after his set, many fans got to meet and talk with him, making the festival that much more personal.

BEST SET: SANGO Often times I find it harder to be entertained during DJ sets. Sango showcased what Soulection can bring to the table for the music industry. His mix of contemporary hip-hop, Latin beats, and Brazilian funk creates a unique sound that had the crowd dancing throughout his set. Sango mixed mainstream songs like Nice For What and Nights with his own flair. He also wasn't afraid to step out in front of the table to dance along with the crowd with a flawless shoot. Overall, it was just impressive how Sango was able to capture the energy of the festival.

Mac Miller “2009” Swimming

INTERPRETATION 1

Sitting on a cloud with eyes closed immersed in a convoluted version of everything that has happened. Essentially Black Mirror's “The Entire History of You" concept of being able to rewatch memories.

INTERPRETATION 2

Driving alone on an empty highway which leads to reminiscing on youth. In particular, childhood relationships that have been made and mistakes that are ingrained in your memory.

INTERPRETATION 3

You enter a ballroom where chandelier is luminating the room. Someone is playing a cello in the background. One guy wearing a white suit while everyone else is wearing black.

Joji “worldstar money (interlude)” In Tongues INTERPRETATION 1

Just an animated sketch outline of a person walking through a busy street. On the street there are kids running around, a couple arguing, and cars passing by. No one seems to notice the person.

INTERPRETATION 2

An artist on Hollywood Boulevard performing. They are drawing in a crowd and it gets bigger as the song goes along. They are strumming the guitar with their eyes closed, unaware of the newly formed crowd surrounding them.

INTERPRETATION 3

Set in Angels Knoll park (from 500 Days of Summer) there is the similar couple on the bench. Instead they are overlooking a now apocalyptic version of Los Angeles.

KAYTRANADA “LEAVE ME ALONE” 99.9% INTERPRETATION 1

An unexpected musical guest on a cruise ship. The singer has an alluring voice, similar to the Sirens from the Odyssey. The Siren voices rile up the party and holds everyone in a uncontrollable trance.

INTERPRETATION 2

In a spaceship in a corn field overlooking cows with your pal. The sky is a strange off-putting blue at night. There are clouds covering up the horizon. You run down and fall into the corn field and make a maize angel.

INTERPRETATION 3

You’re at a cute lil picnic on a green hill with one of your first major crush. You two are feeding each other PB&J sandwiches and chocolate covered strawberries. It’s a perfect 73 degrees out and the clouds perfectly obscure the direct heat of the sun. You two laugh, falling back onto the picnic mat.
