Issue 3? THAT’S WHAT I’M TALKING BOUT. So proud to say that we made it to a full volume! This started out of boredom and now it really has become my passion project. So much love for all of my talented friends for making this zine a joy to make. All of their artwork is amazing and I get to the honor of compiling and sharing it FOUNDER with y’all. A lot more of these EDITOR-IN-CHIEF + DESIGNER spreads in this issue are just abstract ideas without any real purpose. My overall goal was to make this the ultimate issue since I feel like the last one was sort of rushed as a result of midterms! So a lot of the visual branding is renovated since the last two. Thanks for sticking with me and I hope you enjoy. Happy new years my dudes. I truly appreciate all of you. 2017 was a good one.

VIVID VISIONS
Alex Lustig “U Sense
Interpretation 1: Late night in the city and it is lively as ever. Each step you take there are neon lights that light up the floor beneath you. Interpretation 2: Hot shower running on a cold day. Reminds me of a hot breath that you can see on a cold day. There is a lot of water, humidity in a rainforest with plants growing. Interpretation 3: Rain is falling and drums beating and every time the drumstick hits the drum water droplets bounce. Like taking a shower.
17
Whethan & Oliver Tree “When I’m Down” Single
Interpretation 1: Speeding down the freeway in the middle of the day. The last day of school and the first day of summer. Interpretation 2: The Intro is like the sun is rising. Reminds me of my friends. Reminds me of a musical where a character is singing and walking through the neighborhood and saying hi to everyone. Interpretation 3: Sidewalks that are really hot from the heat of the sun on a summer day. Sprinklers are going off with yellow umbrellas.
18
Snakehips ft. Tory Lanez “Dímelo” All My Friends - EP
Interpretation 1: The color magenta. Interpretation 2: In a music video driving a nice car and he’s the passenger and he’s standing up and dancing in like a tunnel. All with cut out shots. Interpretation 3: It is an eerie night. You and your friends have snuck out to meet out in the woods. They bring their flashlights and travel kits. Just looking to have fun.

L JORDAN BETWEEN
Majid Jordan burst onto the scene in 2013, when they were featured on Drake’s “Hold On, We’re Going Home,” which peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100. The duo is composed of Majid Al Maskati and Jordan Ullman, singer and producer respectively. They met at a party while studying at the University of Toronto and started working together, releasing singles and EPs on SoundCloud until they were discovered and signed to OVO Sound, Drake’s record label.
s ince, the unique R&B duo has
released a handful of highlysuccessful singles and two fulllength LPs, including their most recent entitled, “The Space Between.” “The Space Between” has been a crowd-pleaser since it’s release in October, as it stays true to their atmospheric, kick-heavy, R&B sound but has a more refined flavor than their prior releases. In the track “Phases,” a simple piano progression leads with clear, isolated vocals leading the audience to expect a strippedback ballad. Yet, the production slowly builds until about a minute in when Ullman brings in a series of hard-hitting kicks and claps with rounded synths, creating a more seamless version of the classic Majid Jordan sound.
On this record, both Al Maskati and Ullman seem to have leaned more into their respective talents, allowing them to meld together more smoothly. In “What You Do to Me,” producer Jordan keeps his percussion part slightly more subdued in an effort to allow his partner’s lyrics and vocals to shine. In turn, Majid gives his partner free reign to distort and filter his vocals on the “Intro” and “Outro” to create the exact atmosphere that is called for leading into and out of the polished record that is sandwiched in between. With star features from their label-mates PARTYNEXTDOOR and dvsn, Majid Jordan also underscored their ability to expand their sound to accommodate collaboration. In “One I Want” featuring PARTYNEXTDOOR. The distorted and funk-esque bass synth is characteristic of the duo’s sound and is paired with a strong, downbeat-heavy drum part allowing Al Maskati and Jahron Brathwaite (more commonly known as PARTYNEXTDOOR) to follow a clean beat but create unexpected but incredibly pleasing melodic and rhythmic choices.
21
As Al Maskati and Brathwaite sing about the ageold theme of money failing to buy happiness, Ullman’s ingenious production proves to be both pointed and purposeful as he mimics the sound of a heartbeat in his drum part. The collaboration allowed the duo to prove to their loyal fans that working with other artists would never take away from their creativity, but rather add layers and new textures to their discography. Complete with everything from smooth ballad-like love songs, like “You,” to percussive and radio-ready tracks like “Gave Your Love Away,” Majid Jordan’s sophomore LP “The Space Between” easily avoided the widely-feared sophomore slump and rose above any of their previous releases. By showcasing the talents of lyricist and vocalist Majid Al Maskati and the production genius of Jordan Ullman, the duo continues to win over the hearts of contemporary R&B fans worldwide.

STANDOUT SONGS u
Unlike the obvious star of the EP, “Her”, the track “U” has a laid back style that shows a softer tone. The track brings you back to a sense of yearning that is hard to forget.
make it work This track has a great intro that punches into the first verse. As the second song on the album, it gauges where the rest of the songs will lead emotionally.
chill pad deluxe
Released under their previous name, Good People, “Chill Pad Deluxe” highlights Majid’s vocal capabilities with minimal production from Jordan.
R AT I N G S U M M ARY Production: The impeccable balance between Majid Al Maskati’s vocals and Jordan Ullman’s blend of percussive drum machines and scintillating synths creates a sound that’s incomparable to any of their musical peers.
5/5
Lyrics: Majid Jordan make the stylistic choice of creating strong lyrical motives and repeating them, which works perfectly for them. However, for a duo that’s categorized in the R&B genre, the pair are definitely less lyric-driven than the giants of their sound-world.

HONNE is a duo from London, composed of Andy Clutterbuck and James Hatcher. The pair create pop-soul music with a fresh electronic twist. They implement live instrumentation on classic soulful electric guitars and live keys, add layers of rich vocals with help from the likes of the renown House Gospel Choir, and then make the classic soul style sound fresh by mixing in

SATURDAY Tyler the Creator
HEADLINER
where this flower blooms, glitter
Everyone was super hyped for Tyler, considering he is the mastermind behind the entire carnival in the first place! His set was the most crowded with people pushing to get closer. Everyone was screaming when he opened with Where This Flower Blooms. He is definitely a performer who is just as good live (if not better) than in the studio. The only thing hindering it from being perfection were the lack of visuals.
BEST SET
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES: Denzel Curry Mac Demarco Vince Staples Syd Kamaiyah Roy Ayers
Mac Miller knock knock, dang!
Mac has been playing flog gnaw every year but has definitely grew within his sound. He brought on a very special guest, Thundercat. Mac’s energy is off the charts and it showed in the audience. There were no fancy tricks or dancing, just his clean flow and stage presence.
BROCKHAMPTON / sweet, palace
I definitely felt a sense of unity within their blue face paints and orange jumpsuits. You could feel the raw energy from each member as they performed their songs. The graphics they had were really cool and different from any other act.

SUNDAY Kid Cudi
HEADLINER
man on the moon, day ’n’ night
It was good to see Kid Cudi happy and running around on stage. The stage setup was gorgeous and it definitely set an ambient mood for his entire set. At the end, he played Surfin’ over and over even though it was not a crowd favorite but I absolutely loved it. It definitely was a bittersweet end to the carnival.
Solange
BEST SET
cranes in the sky, don’t touch my hair Solange is an enigma. No words can fully describe how magical and literally awesome her set was. Her energy and passion is unmatchable, her sound is divine and the control is definitely within the crowd. She lets people feel her pain and happiness. The chemistry between her and her band mates exudes so much love and warmth.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES: Mild High Club Jorja Smith Sam Gellaitry Solange ASAP Rocky The Internet Lil Yachty 2 Chainz

Steve Lacy = c u girl, some
Steve has been performing as a member of The Internet since the beginning. He has a certain flare, his style is impeccable and he seemed very comfortable on stage and with the crowd. His fan base is growing every day and you can tell he’s passionate for his music. Rockstar Steve!
