Ferrari 488 GTB: Extreme Power For Extreme Driving Thrills Forty years on from the unveiling of Ferrari’s first ever mid-rear-engined V8 model, the 308 GTB, the Prancing Horse opens a new chapter in its 8-cylinder history. The 488 GTB provides track-level performance that can be enjoyed to the full even by non-professional drivers in everyday use. Its response times, nimbleness and on-thelimit driving guarantee a unique sense of exhilaration and unparalleled driving pleasure. 09 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM Ferrari 488 GTB.indd 2

The new berlinetta brilliantly encapsulates Ferrari’s experience in both F1 and the WEC, where the 458 GT holds the World Championship title and has won its category in the last two editions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The new model also exploits to the full the know-how gleaned by Ferrari technicians over the last decade through the XX programme which makes extreme track-only cars available to gentleman test-drivers. The data yielded has made a significant contribution to the refinement of the electronic and vehicle control systems so that drivers can make the most of the incredible performance of this new car.

Powertrain

The Ferrari 488 GTB’s new 3902 cc V8 turbo is at top of the class for power output, torque and response times, making it the new benchmark for this kind of architecture. The engine unleashes 670 cv at 8,000 rpm along with 760 Nm of maximum torque in seventh gear and a response time to the accelerator of just 0.8 seconds at 2,000 rpm. These figures are sufficient to allow the 488 GTB toaccelerate from 0-200 km/h in an astonishing 8.3 secondsand, when combined with the radical innovations introduced on all aspects of the car’s performance, lap the Fiorano track in just 1’23”. The gearbox features Variable Torque Management which unleashes the engine’s massive torque smoothly and powerfully right across the rev range, while specific gear ratios deliver incredibly progressive acceleration when the driver floors the throttle. As is always the case, Ferrari’s engineers have dedicated great attention to perfecting the Ferrari 488 GTB’s sound, creating a new soundtrack that is full, clear and totally distinctive, as expected from any Prancing Horse engine.

Aerodynamics

The car’s aerodynamics also made a pivotal contribution to performance: its 1.67 efficiency figure is a new record for a production Ferrari and is the fruit of 50 per cent more downforce than the previous model and reduced drag. 11 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM Ferrari 488 GTB.indd 4

2/28/15 11:11 PM

The greatest challenge was achieving these two goals simultaneously. Several innovative elements were specifically developed to do so, not least a double front spoiler, base bleed side intakes and, at the rear, active aerodynamics coupled with a blown spoiler. The aerodynamic underbody, which incorporates vortex generators, is highly sophisticated, too.

Vehicle dynamics

The Ferrari 488 GTB’s subsystems and electronic controls make its power and performance instantly available and controllable. It is, in fact, the most responsive production model there is, with razor-sharp response times comparable to those of a track car.

The evolved version of Ferrari’s side slip angle control system (Side Slip Control 2 – SSC2), is more precise and less invasive, providing greater longitudinal acceleration out of corners. Aside from integrating with car’s F1-Trac and E-Diff, the SSC2 now also controls the active dampers which renders the car’s dynamic behaviour during complex manoeuvres even flatter and more stable.

2/28/15 11:11 PM

Exterior design

Designed by the Ferrari Styling Centre, the new 488 GTB features very sculptural flanks which are the key to its character. Its large signature air intake scallop is a nod to the original 308 GTB and is divided into two sections by a splitter. The wide front spoiler features a double profile to improve the thermal efficiency of the radiators positioned at the sides. At the centre two pylons are combined with a deflector which channels air towards the flat underbody.

13 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM Ferrari 488 GTB.indd 6

2/28/15 11:11 PM

The broad, low tail is also dominated by aerodynamic solutions, including an innovative blown spoiler which generates downforce without increasing drag. This works in conjunction with an aggressive ramp angle for the diffuser which features active flaps. The greater height required for the diffuser was achieved by repositioning the exhaust tailpipes. The circular LED tail lights have also been redesigned.

2/28/15 11:11 PM

Interior design In the cabin, the seamless integration of the new satellite control clusters, angled air vents and instrument panel heightens the sense that the cockpit is completely tailored around the driver. Usability was the key word in the design, leading to an extremely sporty ambience that in no way compromises on comfort.

15 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM Ferrari 488 GTB.indd 8

2/28/15 11:11 PM

There are plenty of classic Ferrari styling elements too, such as the clear separation between the dashboard and tunnel, the multifunctional steering wheel, the control switch bridge and wraparound seats. The graphics and interface of the infotainment screen have also been completely redesigned while the design of the Ferrari 488 GTB’s new key takes its inspiration from the car’s cylinder banks and allows keyless starts. The 488 GTB will make its world debut at the International Geneva Motor Show in March.

2/28/15 11:18 PM

Mercedes-AMG and Cigarette Racing joined forces for the fifth consecutive year to present the all-new 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT S and Cigarette Racing 50 Marauder GT S Concept. As the most powerful production twin engine performance boat, the Cigarette Racing 50 Marauder GT S Concept marries the characteristic styling and thoroughbred motorsport technology of the Mercedes-AMG GT S. Incorporating a stunning AMG Solarbeam Yellow painted exterior with custom matte black accents, the new concept boat was designed to mimic the dynamic character of the Mercedes-AMG GT S that will be on display alongside it. With the launch of the Mercedes-AMG GT S in April, Mercedes-AMG is introducing a highly compelling new pure-bred sports car that combines driving dynamics and first-class racetrack performance with a stunning design. Its front mid-engine design and use of intelligent aluminum lightweight construction form the basis for a highly dynamic driving experience. The newly developed AMG 4.0-liter V-8 biturbo engine underscores the hallmark of AMG driving performance and develops 503 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque, propelling the car from 0 – 60 mph in a breathtaking 3.7 seconds. 25 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM Mercedes-AMG GT S.indd 4

2/28/15 11:18 PM

“With its technological substance the Mercedes-AMG GT S meets our high demands on driving dynamics, agility and performance”, says Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG. “The GT S is built according to the motto ‘Handcrafted by Racers’. We are glad that this spirit and our brand-typical driving performance inspired our long-time partner Cigarette Racing to create this powerboat.” “We are thrilled to partner with the Mercedes-Benz high-performance brand again this year to design our fastest powerboat yet,” said Skip Braver, President and CEO of Cigarette Racing. “Featuring the all new AMG-inspired Mercury racing engine, the 50 Marauder GT S Concept embodies our brand’s commitment to innovation and craftsmanship.” Mercedes-AMG and Cigarette Racing have been collaborating since 2007, primarily for organizing joint customer and marketing activities. Whether on land or water, performance is what unites Mercedes-AMG and Cigarette Racing. Similar to its Mercedes-AMG super sports counterpart, the 38’ to 55’ (11.6 to 16.8 meters) long powerboat from the American specialists is amongst the world’s fastest and most exclusive machines.

The track-dedicated 1000PS McLaren P1 GTR will debut at the 85th International Geneva Motor Show in limited production form with only minor modifications to the Design Concept presented just six months ago. The most noticeable change is the livery that the Geneva show car will be sporting. It is one which will be available to the fortunate few who will be joining the McLaren P1 GTR Driver Programme that kicks off at the Circuit de Catalunya in Spain later this year. The design is homage to the yellow and green McLaren F1 GTR, chassis #06R, which has claimed its own place in history as one of the five F1 GTRs that dominated the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the historic debut by McLaren 20 years ago. From design concept to the track The McLaren P1 GTR has completed an extensive and intense testing schedule across the world following the unveil of the Design Concept at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance last summer. This has produced enhancements to the original design to optimise aerodynamic performance and cooling. The front track is 80mm wider than the road-going McLaren P1 and with its aggressively profiled front splitter, the also car sits 50mm lower to the ground on centre-locking 19-inch motorsport alloy wheels shod with Pirelli slick tyres. The lower bodywork is trimmed with a sleek aerodynamic blade as previewed on the design concept, which cleans the flow of air along the car’s flanks.

31 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM McLaren P1 GTR.indd 4

2/28/15 11:20 PM

The lightweight windscreen from the McLaren P1 road car, measuring just 3.2mm thick, has been retained, while the side windows are now motorsport-specification polycarbonate with a sliding ‘ticket window’ on the driver’s side. The chemically toughened glass panels in the roof have been replaced with carbon fibre panels to give the cabin a more enclosed, cocooned environment, as has the engine bay cover. The weight saving measures on the McLaren P1 GTR combine to strip out 50kg over the road-going model. The rear of the track-only model is dominated, in contrast to the road-going McLaren P1, by the presence of a fixed-height wing which sits more than 400mm above the sculpted rear bodywork – an increase of over 100mm of the adjustable wing on the road car. Working in conjunction with the front-mounted aerodynamic flaps ahead of the front wheels, the rear wing helps to increase downforce levels by more than 10 percent – meaning up to 660kg at 150 mph. Mounted on light weight carbon fibre pylon supports, the wing retains the DRS (Drag Reduction System) of the road car, which trims the pitch from 32° to 0° at the push of the button on the steering wheel. Another bold and differentiating feature at the rear are the large twin exhaust pipes, formed from an Inconel and titanium alloy. This system saves in excess of 6.5kg over the already light road-going system.

2/28/15 11:20 PM

Significant updates and modifications to the IPAS powertrain have been made beneath the ‘shrinkwrapped’ carbon fibre bodywork. At its heart, the McLaren P1 GTR seamlessly integrates the 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine with an enhanced lightweight electric motor. Combined, these powerplants generate 1,000PS; 800PS (789bhp) is produced by the petrol engine, coupled to 200PS (197bhp) available immediately from the electric motor. The powertrain has been thoroughly revised for optimum performance on track, with key components replaced with motorsport-developed parts, more suited to the sustained high speed running the cars will be subjected to. In addition to this, features within the powertrain of the McLaren P1 designed specifically for public highway use have been removed to reduce weight. McLaren F1 GTR #06R: inspiring a new generation McLaren F1 GTR chassis #06R was campaigned successfully throughout the 1995 and 1996 seasons with Mach One Racing, and is one of the longest serving examples of the McLaren F1 GTR in competition. The Harrods-sponsored #51 was famously one of seven McLaren F1 GTRs to compete at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1995, and was driven to the final podium position by multiple Le Mans race winner Derek Bell, his son Justin, and Andy Wallace. After this result, the team went on to win the final three races of the BPR Championship.

33 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM McLaren P1 GTR.indd 6

2/28/15 11:20 PM

The following year, the team enjoyed another strong campaign. Oliver Grouillard joined Derek Bell and Andy Wallace in the line-up for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and finished a commendable sixth. The team also claimed a win at Silverstone in the Global GT Endurance championship. McLaren P1 Driver Program The first locations for the first McLaren P1 Driver Program have now been confirmed, and will see drivers attend an initial test session at Silverstone, England, followed by the first on-track activity at Circuit de Catalunya in Spain. These events will follow on from individual driver profiling sessions at the McLaren Technology Centre. These tailored consultations will include a race seat fitting, a Human Performance Centre assessment, and final discussions around the design and livery of each model with McLaren Automotive Design Director Frank Stephenson. Each driver will also experience the McLaren P1 GTR from the simulator for the first time. Ultimate Series forms the third and final tier of the McLaren model line-up The McLaren P1 GTR joins the road-going McLaren P1 in the Ultimate Series. This exclusive range prioritises aerodynamics and outright performance through notable advances in weight reduction, chassis and powertrain engineering and the use of pioneering materials.

2/28/15 11:20 PM

McLaren has now established a three tier naming structure of Sports Series, Super Series and Ultimate Series. The Sports Series is the entry point to McLaren and will make its global debut at the 2015 New York International Auto Show in April. Above this sits the core McLaren Super Series, comprising the 650S, the Asia-only 625C and the recently-announced 675LT which will premiere at the Geneva Motor Show.Â

Dodge continues to build on the Scat Pack legacy In 1968, Dodge united the brand’s performance vehicle enthusiasts through the creation of the “Scat Pack Club.” The Scat Pack Club quickly transformed and expanded from an enthusiast club, into an over-arching Dodge performance philosophy. This shared philosophy ultimately evolved into the desire for even more performance. Dodge and Mopar brands partnered to respect this need by delivering factory-engineered performance stage kits that would ultimately become known as “Scat Packs.” For the 2015 model year, the all-new 2015 Challenger R/T Scat Pack and 392 HEMI Scat Pack Shaker models were created to deliver even more performance to the Dodge lineup. With a best-in-class 485 horsepower and 475 lb.-ft. of torque, trackready performance features, heritage styling and the availability of the class-exclusive TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission – these two Challenger models are targeted directly at hardcore Dodge enthusiasts. 2/28/15 11:29 PM

With production strictly limited to just 100 examples, the new model combines all of Aston Martin’s learning from its years of sports car competition around the globe to produce its most performance focused road-going Vantage. Equipped with a new iteration of the brand’s 6.0-litre V12 engine which is capable of generating up to 600 PS1, the car weighs in at 100kg less than a standard V12 Vantage S. Comprehensively re-engineered, as well as significantly restyled, the GT3-inspired special edition is lower and wider than any of its siblings in the Vantage family. A broader track – front and rear – brings even more composed cornering thanks to a reduction in lateral load transfer, while the use of Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres provides even more assured handling. Thoroughly equipped with cutting edge motorsport-inspired features, from the extensive use of carbon fibre inside and out to the track-focused aerodynamics pack – which includes a prominent rear wing and pronounced front splitter – the race-derived new Vantage brings more focused and uncompromising capability and styling to a road-going Aston Martin. 71 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM Aston Martin Vantage GT3.indd 4

2/28/15 11:29 PM

The aerodynamics package in particular has a profound effect, producing significant downforce to provide even greater levels of grip and stability at higher speeds. Inspired by Aston Martin Racing’s successful campaigns, this new GT3-derived Vantage has been designed and engineered exclusively at Aston Martin’s Gaydon Headquarters in Warwickshire, England, to be the most overt expression of everything that defines Vantage: an inspirational sports model offering supreme driveability on the road, and uncompromising dynamic performance on track. New flared carbon fibre front wings, carbon fibre bonnet, a lithium ion race-derived battery, carbon-fibre door casings, optional carbon fibre roof, optional weight-saving polycarbonate rear window and rear quarter windows are just a few of the measures which illustrate the engineers’ determination to eliminate mass wherever possible. That determination has paid off, too, as the new car weighs in at only 1,565 kg2. Under the skin lie a number of bespoke engineering upgrades, aside from the new 600 PS1 V12 engine. Magnesium inlet manifolds with revised geometry, a lightweight magnesium torque tube and a full titanium exhaust system with centre outlets are just a few of the features that underline the rigorous re-engineering of this exclusive new Vantage.

2/28/15 11:33 PM

A more-dynamic front spoiler and fascia enclose the subtly-revised BMW kidney grill, and shape the transition to the new ALPINA hood which features character chines, lending the new B6 xDrive Gran Coupe an even more powerful appearance and accentuate its class-leading performance potential. The 4.4 liter V8 Bi-Turbo V-8 engine – known amongst aficionados as the embodiment of power, torque and refinement – now delivers an astonishing 600 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and maximum torque of 590 lb-ft at only 3,500 rpm (all figures preliminary). The increase in output of 60 hp over the 2015 model has been achieved through extensive rework of the air intake ducting and air filter housing, with enhancements to the fuel supply system. Coupling the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive system with an ALPINA-developed performance calibration means the new B6 xDrive Gran Coupe delivers heroic straight-line performance. With a 0 – 60 mph acceleration time of only 3.6 seconds (preliminary), it is the fastest-accelerating BMW ALPINA model ever developed. The new B6 xDrive Gran Coupe is capable of a maximum speed of 200 mph (electronically limited). WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM | 90 2016 BMW Alpina B6.indd 5

2/28/15 11:33 PM

The ALPINA sport suspension utilizes BMW’s advanced electronic suspension technologies including Dynamic Damper Control (adjustable, adaptive shock absorbers) and Adaptive Drive (Active Roll Stabilization), which work together with the fully-variable torque distribution of the all-wheel drive system to achieve very neutral, agile driving dynamics. The powerful brake system now features blue calipers with ALPINA lettering on the front axle with brake discs measuring 374 x 36 mm on the front and 370 x 24 on the rear (increased from 345 x 24 mm). The standard equipment level has been extended to include attractive features such as Full LED Adaptive Headlights with High Beam Assistant, and a discrete new B6 model designation in the B-pillar in high-gloss Shadow Line. Refined performance with powerful delivery Continuous development of the 4.4 liter V8 Bi-Turbo V-8 engine has resulted in a number of upgrades leading to a significant increase in power output in the new B6 xDrive Gran Coupe. The engine now develops 600 hp at 6,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 590 lb-ft between 3,500 and 4,500 rpm (preliminary figures). 91 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM 2016 BMW Alpina B6.indd 6

2/28/15 11:33 PM

Two specifically-constructed, large-diameter turbochargers, operating in parallel, are primarily responsible for achieving a high power and torque output over a very broad engine speed range, without sacrificing spontaneous throttle response at low rpm. The high-performance water-air intercooler system with a short intake distances consists of a large-volume low-temperature heat exchanger, and two near-engine intercoolers. Additional oil and water coolers are located just behind the front spoiler to ensure overall thermodynamic efficiency of the engine. Extensive optimization of the air intake ducting and air filter housing leads to a substantial reduction of losses, which together with an upgraded fuel supply system results in the hike in output of 60 hp over the previous model year. Inside the cylinders, specific MAHLE pistons are designed to deal with temperatures and pressures associated with up to 1.2 bar (17.4 psi) boost pressure and the engine’s 10.0:1 nominal compression ratio.

ALPINA-tuned 8-speed Sport Automatic transmission Adapted and tested in co-operation with ZF, the advanced ALPINA SWITCH-TRONIC 8-Speed Sport Automatic transmission is perfectly tailored to the power and torque of the V-8 Bi-Turbo engine. It excels equally in the disciplines sport and comfort, playing a central role in infusing the B6 xDrive Gran Coupe with ALPINA typical characteristics. In Automatic (D) Shift Mode, the flexible blend of eight speeds and high torque makes for smooth gear changes only a torque converter can provide. Explicitly programmed for comfort, the B6 Bi-Turbo Gran Coupe glides effortlessly and efficiently at low engine speed and tall gears, offering unmatched cruising ability. In Sport (S) Shift Mode, the transmission becomes significantly more dynamic, gear changes are executed faster and feedback becomes more direct. The system allows for multi-simultaneous downshifts in only milliseconds, wherein the transmission will skip several gears depending on engine loads and speeds to select the most favorable gear for optimum acceleration. The Manual (M) Shift Mode allows full driver control over the transmission. The ALPINA SWITCH-TRONIC buttons are ergonomically mounted on the rear of the steering wheel, their actuation allowing the driver to shift up or down as required. A unique feature of the transmission software in Manual (M) Shift Mode in combination with the selection of Sport+ or DSC OFF Mode using the Driving Dynamics Control button is the cancellation of automatic upshift function. In this mode of operation, the transmission will maintain the selected gear up to maximum engine speed and will not automatically upshift to the next gear. This is desirable in certain driving situations, for example during especially dynamic driving on roads with multiple tight hair-pin corners, or on race track segments featuring pronounced elevation change. Hardware modifications to the transmission, output and driveshafts enable unrestrained power delivery. In combination with the single-cylinder fade-out and ALPINA specific software modifications, this eliminates the common reduction of torque required by the transmission in order to up-shift. This allows super-quick upshifts under full loads which, together with xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive, means the B6 xDrive Gran Coupe requires only 3.6 seconds for the sprint from 0 – 60 mph (preliminary). 93 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM 2016 BMW Alpina B6.indd 8

2/28/15 11:33 PM

BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive The ALPINA all-wheel drive system exploits the technical potential of BMW’s xDrive system and its intelligent, dynamic distribution of drive power which continuously and variably distributes torque between the front and rear axle within milliseconds, for a maximum of traction and control. For the BMW ALPINA B6 xDrive Gran Coupe, the programming of the torque distribution control system, which is interconnected with the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and engine management system, is performance-oriented and increases driving agility and dynamics – especially under lateral acceleration – while maintaining a neutral balance. Besides allowing optimum traction under acceleration by eliminating slip-induced losses, the system continuously monitors a wide range of sensory inputs – for example steering angle, lateral acceleration, yaw angle and speed - to distribute torque to achieve maximum safety in challenging conditions or when encountering sudden changes in road surface friction. Exhaust system The B6 xDrive Gran Coupe features a full stainless steel exhaust system with ALPINA trademark elliptical twin tailpipes. The character of the deep exhaust note is prominent but not intrusive. Active exhaust valves allow balance between enthusiasm and comfort on long journeys. The driver can influence the sound experience using the Driving Dynamics Control button. In Comfort Mode, the exhaust valve is closed up to 2,500 rpm, and in Sport Mode the valve is permanently open. Chassis, wheels, and tires BMW ALPINA automobiles place special demands on chassis and suspension – requiring high levels of comfort for relaxed cruising, light-footed and dynamic agility for purposeful driving as well as safe and neutral handling at high speeds. The B6 xDrive Gran Coupe’s chassis and suspension technology builds upon the basis of a BMW double-wishbone front suspension and integral rear axle. Furthermore it utilizes sophisticated electronic suspension technologies including Dynamic Damper Control (adjustable, adaptive shock absorbers) and Adaptive Drive (BMW Active Roll Stabilization). This allows the driver to change the chassis and suspension settings distinctly between Comfort+, Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ using the Driving Dynamics Control rocker switch. WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM | 94 2016 BMW Alpina B6.indd 9

2/28/15 11:33 PM

The ALPINA-specific calibration of dampers and stabilizers is tied into other system parameters including torque distribution, stability control, steering assistance, and throttle response. Stiffer springs and increased front wheel camber, combined with the 20” staggered ALPINA CLASSIC wheel and tire set, result in direct steering response and precise handling. The high performance MICHELIN Pilot Super Sport tires forego run-flat technology in order to maximize comfort and they have a high speed rating to allow for the B6 xDrive Gran Coupe’s maximum possible speed of 200 mph. The dimensions of the rear wheel and tire have increased to 10” x 20” and 295/30 ZR20 for improved traction while the front dimensions remain at 8.5” x 20” and 255/35 ZR 20. All season tires measuring 255/35 front and 285/30 rear are available as a factory option. Vehicles supplied with this option from the factory have a non-removable limited top speed of 130 mph. ALPINA recommends the appropriate use of performance summer tires and winter tires according to weather conditions for the best performance, handling and safety of your BMW ALPINA vehicle. 95 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM 2016 BMW Alpina B6.indd 10

2/28/15 11:33 PM

Exterior design The ALPINA design features blend seamlessly and stylishly into the surfaces and lines of the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe, accentuating its dynamic, graceful silhouette. A new, more aggressive front spoiler and apron enclose the subtly-changed BMW kidney grill and shape the transition to the new hood with character chines. These lend the new B6 xDrive Gran Coupe an even more authoritative appearance and hint at the enormous performance potential of the V-8 Bi-Turbo engine. The design and shape of the new ALPINA front spoiler ensures the effective flow of sufficient air to the radiator modules of the performance cooling-system, including inter-cooler, water and oil. A subtle, integrated splitter directs air over and around rather than underneath the vehicle, thereby stabilizing the front end at high speeds. Special NACA air channels at the front of the underbody suck cold air towards the powerful brake system with blue calipers which are visible through the delicate spokes of the ALPINA CLASSIC 20” wheels. Large diameter brake discs measuring 374 x 36 mm on the front and 370 x 24 mm on the rear (up from 345 x 24 mm) guarantee effective brake performance. Interior & equipment The new B6 xDrive Gran Coupe has a comprehensive, comfort orientated range of standard equipment, a luxurious interior, and only the highest-quality materials. Nappa leather and a leather instrument panel remain standard in addition to essential features such as electric comfort seats. The BMW Navigation system with BMW ConnectedDrive services is also standard. Blue ALPINA instrumentation, an ALPINA steering wheel covered in hand-stitched LAVALINA leather, the ALPINA production plaque overhead, door sill trims with blue illuminated ALPINA lettering, and the classic ALPINA luxury wood trim in Myrtle or Piano lacquer – these are some of the exclusive features of the B6 xDrive Gran Coupe’s interior.

BRABUS 850 6.0 Biturbo Coupe based on the Mercedes S 63 625 kW / 850 hp, 1,450 Nm of torque and 350-km/h top speed. The world’s fastest and most powerful allwheel-drive coupe 625 kW / 850 horsepower, a peak torque of 1,450 Nm, 0 – 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.5 seconds, and an electronically limited top speed of 350 km/h (217 mph): with the new BRABUS 850 6.0 Biturbo Coupe based on the Mercedes S 63 4MATIC, BRABUS celebrates the world debut of the fastest and most powerful all-wheel-drive coupe on the globe at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. The two-door car is not only captivating on account of its unrivalled performance, but above all thanks to its sporty and elegant design with clear-coated carbon-fiber aerodynamic-enhancement components, 21-inch high-tech forged wheels and an exclusive BRABUS fine leather interior. The eight-cylinder twin-turbo engine of the S 63 is thoroughly revised in the BRABUS engine shop using a state-of-the-art machine park. The installation of a special BRABUS crankshaft with longer stroke plus an enlarged cylinder bore and correspondingly larger forged pistons results in a displacement increase from 5,461 cc to 5,912 cc. The flow-optimizing fine-machining of both cylinder heads also contributes to the performance enhancement. 97 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM Mercedes-Benz S63 BRABUS.indd 2

2/28/15 11:35 PM

BRABUS 850 6.0 Biturbo Coupe The two special BRABUS turbochargers with larger compressor units and modified exhaust manifolds that replace the production turbos also play a major part in the enormous increase in power. As part of the engine conversion, special metal catalysts with 75-mm thick down pipes and the BRABUS stainless-steel sports exhaust system with actively controlled butterfly valve are installed in addition. Other modifications to the production engine are instantly apparent when the hood is opened: one of the key components of the engine conversion is the specially designed BRABUS 850 intake module. It includes a larger air filter housing with enlarged intake cross-section, which is supplied with air via a special duct in the hood, and new carbon-fiber air ducts with significantly enlarged cross-sections. A particularly conspicuous feature is the BRABUS Gold Heat Reflection sheathing of the intake and charge air pipes. Precisely programmed mapping for injection and ignition coordinate the perfect interaction of the high-performance components. This not only ensures maximum power output, but also compliance with the strict limits set by the current EURO VI emissions standards.

Technology partner MOTUL supplies the high-tech lubricants for the entire powertrain. As the result of the extensive modifications the BRABUS 850 6.0 Biturbo engine delivers unrivalled performance figures: the peak power output of 625 kW / 850 horsepower (838 bhp) is produced at a low 5,400 rpm. Even more immense is the peak torque of 1,450 Nm (1,069 lb-ft), which is on tap between 2,500 and 4,500 rpm. However, in the car this figure is electronically limited to 1,150 Nm (848 lb-ft) in the interest of the longevity of the entire powertrain. The power is channeled to all four wheels via a seven-speed automatic transmission, which can also be shifted manually with the BRABUS RACE aluminum paddle shifters on the steering wheel, and the 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system. A variant with rear-wheel drive is also available. The power unit in the bow makes the BRABUS 850 6.0 Biturbo Coupe the world’s most powerful and fastest four-seat all-wheel-drive coupe. From rest, the exclusive two-door car is catapulted to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.5 seconds. A speed of 200 km/h (124 mph) is reached after just 9.4 seconds. Due to tire limitations the top speed is restricted electronically to 350 km/h (217 mph).

99 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM Mercedes-Benz S63 BRABUS.indd 4

2/28/15 11:35 PM

These enormously fast speeds naturally also place especially high demands on the aerodynamic-enhancement components, which the BRABUS designers developed in the wind tunnel. An additional BRABUS spoiler made from clear-coated carbon fiber was developed for the front bumper. It lends the two-door car a touch of motor racing flair and reduces lift on the front axle at high speeds, further optimizing handling stability. The large air intakes in the front bumper are likewise fitted with tailor-made carbon-fiber elements to add even more dynamic appeal. The BRABUS aerodynamic-enhancement concept for the S-Class Coupe is rounded out with a clear-coated BRABUS carbon-fiber diffusor, which is fitted with tailor-made cutouts for the BRABUS sports exhaust system, and the subtle rear spoiler in the trunk lid. It is also made from carbon fiber. In addition, the designers developed carbon-fiber surrounds for the side air outlets that add further emphasis to the sporty lines.

A striking design, top quality and even further enhanced driving dynamics are the outstanding traits of the BRABUS Monoblock wheels, which are available for the Mercedes S-Class Coupe with diameters ranging from 18 to 22 inches. To be able to make full use of the enormous performance of the BRABUS 850 6.0 Biturbo variant, the high-performance coupe is equipped with BRABUS Monoblock “PLATINUM EDITION 21-inch forged wheels. The use of state-of-the-art forging technology results in an optimal symbiosis of maximum strength and low weight. The show car for the 2015 Geneva Motor Show sports Monoblock F cross-spoke wheels in Shadow Gold Chrome design. In sizes 9Jx21 on the front axle and 10.5Jx21 at the rear they make perfect use of the available space below the wheel arches. The optimal high-performance tires are supplied by Continental, Pirelli and YOKOHAMA in sizes 255/35 ZR 21 for the front and 295/30 ZR 21 for the rear axle. As an alternative, 21-inch mirror-polished Monoblock VI wheels with six double spokes or the Monoblock R design with dimensionally offset pairs of spokes are also available. 101 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM Mercedes-Benz S63 BRABUS.indd 6

2/28/15 11:35 PM

Yet another option is a BRABUS 22-inch tire/wheel combination. The BRABUS Monoblock G “Platinum Edition forged wheels in the combination 9Jx22 with 255/30 ZR 22 tires on the front axle and 10Jx22 with 295/25 ZR 22 at the rear fully fill out the wheel wells. The BRABUS suspension lowering module is calibrated to the use of these ultra-low-profile tires. It lowers the ride height of the two-door car by about 15 millimeters (.6 inches). To complement the black paint finish, the interior was exclusively refined. With meticulous precision and master craftsmanship the BRABUS upholsterers transformed especially soft and breathable black Mastik leather into a BRABUS fine leather interior in a class of its own. The sweeping lines of the design of the seat upholstery, door panels and dashboard underscore the sporty and elegant nature of the coupe. Subtle contrasts are added with copper-colored seams and piping. The hallmark BRABUS love of detail is also evident in the accents and switches that normally have a silver finish. A total of 219 individual parts were coated in the same Shadow Gold tone as the BRABUS Monoblock F wheels on the vehicle. The headliner was crafted from deep black Alcantara. 2/28/15 11:35 PM

The BRABUS genuine carbon-fiber elements add markedly sporty highlights in the cockpit. Their surface is finished with a glossy sealant, and they replace the production wood inlays. Aluminum components such as the BRABUS RACE paddle shifters, pedals and door pins further boost this effect. Scuff plates with backlit BRABUS 850 logo, which like the ambient interior lighting can be set to different colors, round out the interior transformation. The 400-km/h (250-mph) BRABUS speedometer demonstrates the enormous potential of the vehicle in the instrument cluster as well. The BRABUS 850 6.0 Biturbo Coupe is available as a complete vehicle and can also be built on the basis of any existing current Mercedes S 63 Coupe. Fuel economy, CO2 emissions and efficiency class: BRABUS 850 6.0 Biturbo based on the S 63 Coupe: city 14.2 l/100 km, highway 8.0 l/100 km, combined: 10.3 l/100 km. Taking On The World, One Le Mans At A Time

The latest project for the NISMO team is the Le Mans P1-class Nissan GT-R LM NISMO – the ultimate Nissan GT-R, created to take on formidable competition on the highest levels. A global effort, the GT-R has been designed, engineered, built and tested by a team of carefully selected experts in Japan, the United States and Europe. Unlike other LM P1 cars, the GT-R’s V6 3.0-liter twin-turbo gasoline engine sits in the front of the front-wheel-drive car, while the hybrid power is harvested from the front driveline to augment acceleration. This is the first time in 16 years that Nissan will be competing at the top class at Le Mans, but it has been a tour-de-force as an engine supplier in the LM P2 class with three wins over the past four years. Nissan has been also a major factor in the “Garage 56” at Le Mans, a unique program set up by the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) that is reserved for innovative technology that falls outside of normal regulations, with vehicles such as the ZEOD RC, which competed in 2014. “LM P1 cars are the most extreme sports cars in racing today and for Nissan and NISMO, the opportunity to innovate at the highest level cannot be missed,” said Darren Cox, Global Head of Brand, Marketing & Sales, NISMO. 125 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM Nissan 370Z NISMO Roadster Concept.indd 6

Exterior Design

The exterior design of the Concept GC-PHEV is marked by the carefully placed angular creases in the sheetmetal that when combined with the overall imposing dimensions and muscular silhouette of this vehicle, express a sense of performance, capability and safety. The powerful exterior composition makes it look as though a master craftsman chiseled it by hand out of a single block of granite. Paradoxically, the Concept GCPHEV’s form was carefully designed to include aerodynamic enhancing features throughout its exterior to minimize energy wasting parasitic drag. Up front, the sleek, narrow headlights perched atop the daytime running lamps have been positioned as high as possible for maximum effectiveness and visibility. The front grille cascades from the hood down to the lower section of the front fascia. Active variable louvers have been placed within the grill to enhance engine cooling when the engine management system deems it necessary.

WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM | 132 Mitsubishi GC-PHEV Concept.indd 5

At the rear of the vehicle, the large tailgate marries aesthetically appealing crisp and contemporary lines with outstanding functionality, providing exceptional rearward visibility to the driver. The exterior aesthetic of the Concept GC-PHEV embodies a spirit of adventure and rugged capability and hints at the exciting design language for future Mitsubishi production vehicles.

Interior Design

Mitsubishi Motors focused on a new direction for the interior of the Concept GCPHEV that places equal importance on comfort, functionality and technology for all of the vehicle’s occupants. All four of the Concept GC-PHEV’s occupants get their own ergonomically-designed bucket seat and everyone in the vehicle has access to an exciting new Mitsubishi technology – the Tactical Table. A technologically advanced new feature for the driver is Mitsubishi’s new AR Windshield (see “Safety” on page 12 for more info) that utilizes augmented reality to relay critical information in the driver’s line of sight across the windshield. 133 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM Mitsubishi GC-PHEV Concept.indd 6

2/28/15 11:43 PM

Access to the spacious interior is made even easier for all four occupants thanks to the Concept GC-PHEV’s reinforced body construction that allows for the traditional B-pillar to be removed altogether.

Tactical Table

A new vehicle technology incorporated in the Concept GC-PHEV is the Tactical Table. Located in the center of the cabin between the four seating positions, the touchscreen Tactical Table is an innovative new information system that makes connected car technology an interactive experience available to everyone inside the vehicle. The Tactical Table provides an advanced means of two-way communication between the vehicle’s occupants, whether assimilating information for a road trip or having fun through its advanced infotainment features. When the driver or one of the passengers places their smartphone atop the Tactical Table they can create, collect, exchange and/or share information with others using the Concept GC-PHEV’s onboard communication system. Next-Generation PHEV with MiEV Technology

The highly advanced and powerful plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) drivetrain featuring Mitsubishi innovative Electric Vehicle (MiEV) technology is a perfect complement to the “go anywhere, do anything” attitude of a rugged yet refined vehicle like the Concept GC-PHEV. MiEV technology is the name given to Mitsubishi Motors’ proprietary EV- and PHEV-based drivetrain systems and features components and software that have been engineered to deliver outstanding capability, safety and reliability. MiEV technology powers production vehicles including the 100-percent electric-powered Mitsubishi i-MiEV and the plug-in hybrid Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Mitsubishi Motors’ very successful EV- and PHEV-focused motorsports endeavors – including multiple electric vehicle class wins at the famous Pikes Peak International Hill Climb and the grueling FIA-sanctioned Asia Cross Country Rally continue to advance Mitsubishi Motors’ plug-in electric vehicle development. 135 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM Mitsubishi GC-PHEV Concept.indd 8

2/28/15 11:43 PM

The MiEV PHEV drivetrain powering the Concept GC-PHEV consists of a gasoline-powered supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine paired with a lightweight, compact and high-output electric motor that together produce a maximum of 335 horsepower/250 kW and a main drive lithium-ion battery pack with storage capacity of 12 kWh (which is located behind the rear axle and beneath the rear cargo area floor). This energetic yet extremely efficient powertrain combination makes for exciting acceleration with plenty of torque while offering excellent fuel and energy efficiency – the best of both worlds. For additional power optimization with reduced exhaust emissions, the 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 engine benefits from the latest iteration of Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control (MIVEC) variable valve timing. Another welcome feature of the Concept GC-PHEV’s advanced plug-in electric vehicle drivetrain is that the system’s high-capacity main drive lithium-ion battery pack can act as a mobile power source. The 100 volt AC onboard electrical outlet is capable of delivering an external power supply of up to 1500 watts of electrical energy, ideal for acting as an emergency power source for home appliances in the event of a power outage.

2/28/15 11:43 PM

Using the energy stored within a fully charged lithium-ion battery pack alone, the Concept GC-PHEV can supply the equivalent of a day’s worth of electrical power consumption to the average household. With a fully charged battery pack and a full tank of gas to recharge the battery when necessary, this advanced PHEV drivetrain can provide nearly two weeks (13 days) of emergency power to the average household. When driving, the PHEV system automatically switches operation between pure EV mode (all-electric) and hybrid mode (engine and electric motor) depending upon driving conditions, remaining energy within the lithium-ion main drive battery pack, and other factors. In EV mode, the transmission allows the engine’s output efficiency to be maximized at all vehicle speeds. When driving in hybrid mode, the 8-speed automatic transmission extracts power from the engine while the high-output electric motor kicks in to provide additional power, if required. Whether driving in EV or hybrid mode, the Concept GC-PHEV’s drivetrain always delivers outstanding performance, excellent response and smooth acceleration with quietness and sophistication comparable to that of a high-end luxury vehicle – even when pulling a trailer or driving off-road.

139 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM Mitsubishi GC-PHEV Concept.indd 12

2/28/15 11:43 PM

Super All-Wheel Control

A pioneer and recognized global leader in the area of PHEV-based all-wheel drive systems, Mitsubishi has designed an extremely capable Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) system for the Concept GC-PHEV to provide the highest degree of safety, tractability and off-road performance. The S-AWC system not only includes electronically-controlled front and center limited-slip differentials but also benefits from a proprietary Electronic-powered Active Yaw Control (E-AYC) system that more precisely controls left/right torque vectoring of the wheels by using a differential motor. The implementation of a differential motor not only improves response but makes for a much more energy efficient system when compared to a conventional hydraulically-operated yaw control system. This helps the E-AYC system to more efficiently recover energy when the vehicle is decelerating – generating more “free” energy to feed into the lithium-ion main drive battery pack.

Connected Car Technology

The Concept GC-PHEV has been equipped with Mitsubishi Motors’ advanced “connected car” technology that makes use of next-generation information systems. WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM | 140 Mitsubishi GC-PHEV Concept.indd 13

The connected car systems not only provide an additional level of information and driving-related logistics in a convenient and easy-to-use system, but they can potentially reduce the risk of accidents involving other drivers as well as pedestrians/cyclists by keeping the driver better informed about traffic signal status as well as other vehicles and objects within the vicinity of their vehicle. While still in the early stages of research and development, connected car technology as developed by Mitsubishi Motors will have a significant impact on the way we utilize our vehicles, as well as how we interact with our cars through the “Internet of Things.” By linking to a vehicle information network, the Concept GC-PHEV’s connected car system uploads real-time vehicle status information to the network while simultaneously downloading external data. Information received includes traffic within the area, the status of the traffic signal ahead (currently red, yellow or green), and other information to help the driver operate their car more economically and efficiently than ever before. Another important role for connected car technology is in the area of vehicle diagnostics. For example, the system can detect if there is a mechanical issue with the car, alert the driver to the severity of the problem, then provide information so that the driver can drive to the closest Mitsubishi Motors service center in the area (if deemed necessary). Furthermore, should the vehicle be involved in an accident, the connected car system can immediately contact emergency responders as well as provide them with important information (severity of the crash, alert first responders that the vehicle has a high-voltage system if the vehicle is an EV/PHEV, etc.).

141 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM Mitsubishi GC-PHEV Concept.indd 14

2/28/15 11:43 PM

Looking further down the road, future technologies to be incorporated into the connected car system could be novel interfaces such as the AR Windshield, which makes use of augmented reality technology that would allow the driver to collect and process data more safely and efficiently without having to take their eyes off of the road ahead (see “Safety” on page 12 for more information). Connected car technology has the potential to greatly improve driving convenience, efficiency, comfort and safety. Safety is of immense importance to Mitsubishi Motors as the company continues in its never-ending endeavor to earn the highest safety scores for its production vehicles, like the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) “Top Safety Pick+” for the 7-passenger Outlander and “Top Safety Pick” for the 5-passenger Outlander Sport.

AR Windshield

The AR Windshield makes use of augmented reality technology to display critical data to the driver while the vehicle is on the move, greatly improving safety for the vehicle’s occupants as well as pedestrians by allowing drivers to more efficiently maintain control of their car without taking their eyes off of the road in front of them. Information projected onto the windshield includes: • Satellite navigation-based drive route guidance • Distance to vehicle ahead • Lane Departure Warning alerts • Vehicles/pedestrians in blind spots • Caution Tracking information that includes vehicle-to-vehicle communications

Rearward Blind Spot Vehicle Warning

Rearward Blind Spot Vehicle Warning helps to minimize collisions by alerting the driver of a vehicle approaching from behind. Additionally, the system will detect and alert the driver to the presence of a vehicle or other objects (pedestrians or cyclists in motion, stationary obstructions such as a parked vehicle, fire hydrant, etc.) when the driver’s own vehicle is backing up.

Pedestrian Collision Mitigating Auto-braking

Pedestrian Collision Mitigation Auto-braking utilizes both radar- and camera-based systems to detect when a pedestrian walks in front of the vehicle, then automatically applies the brakes to help mitigate injury to the pedestrian or to avoid a collision altogether. 2/28/15 11:43 PM

Unintentional Vehicle Move Off Control

The remarkably intuitive Unintentional Vehicle Move Off Control system operates through a camera mounted at the front of the vehicle working in coordination with a variety of sensors. It detects the mistaken or unintended use of the accelerator instead of the brake pedal and then limits engine power to help restrain forward movement of the vehicle. The system also issues a warning to the driver.

Driver Monitor

The Driver Monitor, using sensors in the steering system and driver’s seat, as well as a camera positioned in front of the driver, detects changes in the driver’s posture and/or eye blinking to determine their level of alertness. If the system detects any abnormalities in driving behavior caused by fatigue or inattentiveness, it will instantly alert the driver. Furthermore, if the system determines that the driver’s level of concentration has diminished or that they are taking their eyes off of the road for too long, it will sound an alert to get the driver’s attention.

Forward Collision Mitigation

A radar-based system that, in certain circumstances, helps determine if a frontal collision is imminent and then warns the driver with audible and visual signals. If necessary, the system automatically applies emergency braking to reduce the severity of the collision.

Lane Departure Warning

As its name suggests, the Lane Departure Warning system is a camera-based system that helps to monitor the lane position of the vehicle and warns the driver via visual and audio alerts should they begin to veer into the next lane.

Adaptive Cruise Control

This radar-based sensor at the front of the vehicle constantly measures distance between itself and the vehicle in front of it, allowing the driver to select between different following distance settings.

Auto Hi-beam Headlights

Through the use of an onboard camera, the Auto Hi-beam Headlights will automatically dim when the system detects oncoming vehicles or pedestrians, re-illuminating the headlights at full strength once the objects have passed. 143 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM Mitsubishi GC-PHEV Concept.indd 16

2/28/15 11:43 PM

The advanced next-generation safety technologies Forward Collision Mitigation, Lane Departure Warning and Adaptive Cruise Control are already available on the recently redesigned 7-passenger 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander crossover vehicle.

The Future: Advanced Safety Technologies

The advanced systems on display in the dynamic new Mitsubishi Concept GCPHEV crossover are but a foreshadowing of the futuristic automotive-related technologies that Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) designers and engineers have in store for their customers in the not-too-distant future. Already an industry leader in the area of 100-percent electric-powered vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), the Japanese auto manufacturer is at the forefront in the research and development of vehicle-to-infrastructure communication systems, Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and vehicle-to-vehicle driving assistance systems and technologies. Some of these advanced automotive technologies that will likely make their way into future Mitsubishi production cars include:

Next-Generation Driver Safety Support System (DSSS)

An infrastructure-to-vehicle communication system, the Driver Safety Support System improves vehicle occupant and pedestrian safety by communicating between Mitsubishi vehicles and road infrastructure. This helps to prevent accidents by warning the driver of the vehicle – or pedestrians and cyclists not even visible to the driver further down the road – of each other’s presence and/or pending interaction. For example, a DSSS system using roadside sensors and cameras could alert the driver to the presence of pedestrians/cyclists in the area, thus helping to reduce the chance of an accident.

Lane Keep Assist

Lane Keep Assist technology provides handling support if deemed necessary to prevent the driver from drifting out of their lane due to inattentiveness or fatigue. Along with a traffic sign recognition system that uses an onboard camera to recognize road signs, the system can further alert the driver about the road signs through additional information and/or warnings. In the event of an emergency, the system will then activate an engine speed limiter. WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM | 144 Mitsubishi GC-PHEV Concept.indd 17

2/28/15 11:43 PM

Mitsubishi Electric Vehicle (EV) Operation via Smartphone Remote Control Mitsubishi Motors Corporation designers and engineers are working on new ways to improve the ease of use and convenience of 100-percent electric-powered vehicles and plug-in hybrids that will soon make their way into the company’s production models as part of its Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) efforts. The introductory phase of this program will likely include user-friendly smartphone apps that will allow Mitsubishi electric vehicle owners to: • Help determine the most cost efficient means of vehicle charging • Check on electricity rates in varying locations • Help select off-peak times to charge their EV/PHEV

145 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM Mitsubishi GC-PHEV Concept.indd 18

2/28/15 11:43 PM

Additionally, Mitsubishi Motors is working on developing smartphone apps for all of their customers to be able to obtain current city street and freeway information as well as traffic conditions.

Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control

Working in tandem with the Lane Keep Assist system, Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control provides forward visual assistance on roads and highways by sharing acceleration, deceleration and braking input information with the vehicle in front of it by using vehicle-to-vehicle as well as available vehicle-to-infrastructure communication systems to establish and maintain accurate and efficient distances between the two vehicles. This not only helps to improve safety but also encourages more efficient vehicle operation as well by reducing traffic congestion.

Advanced Soul-Based Off-Roader Captures the Essence of the “Go Anywhere” Compact CUV Intended for Urban Escape and Mountain Adventures. Aligning form and function to conceive a uniquely compelling vehicle for the city-dweller-turned-outdoor-adventurer, Kia Motors America (KMA) today took the wraps off the boldly designed Trail’ster e-AWD concept at the 2015 Chicago Auto Show. Based on the brand’s iconic Soul urban passenger vehicle, the turbocharged Trail’ster with its Polar Pearl Snowdrift/Terra Bronze Metallic paint scheme, roll-top canvas roof and armored aluminum skid plates captures the essence of an advanced and capable CUV intended for those looking to escape their urban environs in search of higher-elevation playgrounds where snow, mud, streams and trails abound. Efficient and lightweight, the Trail’ster is ideal for transporting adventurers and their gear. With its rugged, functional and upscale approach to an active mountain-focused lifestyle, Trail’ster was dreamt up at Kia’s California design studio, birthplace of the unforgettable Track’ster and GT4 Stinger.

159 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM Kia Trail'Ster Concept.indd 4

2/28/15 11:46 PM

“The Trail’ster concept is a near-future look at how the production Kia Soul would logically evolve into an AWD-capable version that’s built to escape the city streets and roam into the mountain wilderness,” said Tom Kearns, chief designer, Kia Design Center of America (KDCA). “It takes the go-anywhere capability of an SUV and reimagines it within a compact and sporty package with an expressive design to match.” Underscoring Kia’s focus on all-wheel drive capability, the Trail’ster enables a wide array of mountain activities, from skiing and snowboarding to camping, hiking and mountain biking. Whether it’s trekking up to a high, snowy summit or traipsing down a muddy fire road to a piney trailhead, the Trail’ster – thanks to a rear axle-mounted electric all-wheel-drive system – is all about surefootedness in the wild. A Soul Searcher, Inside and Out Based on the production Soul, the Trail’ster’s overall shape and size are unmistakable. But with family genes tied closely to the thought-provoking Track’ster and Soul’ster concepts — which pushed Soul far into new directions to realize its performance and lifestyle possibilities — the Trail’ster also takes a dramatic departure from its production-car roots with styling and drivetrain components that turn Kia’s popular urban passenger vehicle into a rugged runabout, further demonstrating that Soul is indeed the ideal platform for creativity and experimentation.

2/28/15 11:46 PM

The exterior color was inspired by the earthy combination of springtime snow and mud, the terrain for which the Trail’ster has been created to travel confidently through on its way to outdoor destinations high above sea level. The Polar Pearl Snowdrift exterior paint is a modern neutral color, against which the warm and contrasting Terra Bronze Metallic tone of the roof and lower cladding brings connection to the soft dirt of roads less traveled. Anodized fire-red wheel accents and polished billet aluminum sections infuse a purposeful and sophisticated aesthetic to the Trail’ster’s precise design, taking inspiration from high-tech, high-performance outdoor sporting gear. Overhead, the Trail’ster features a stylish full-length, weatherproof rollback canvas roof to create an open-sky environment for occupants to enjoy the outdoors even before reaching their chosen high ground. This fully retractable cover also helps lighten the vehicle and lowers the center of gravity, promoting higher efficiency and improved dynamics. Integrated roof rack fittings with aluminum cross rails allow adventurers to tote mountain bikes or snowboards with ease. 161 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM Kia Trail'Ster Concept.indd 6

2/28/15 11:46 PM

The Trail’ster’s use of advanced LED technology creates a strong and unique lighting identity from top to bottom, front to back. Upfront, the signature Kia grille bars extend through the K900-style projector headlamps to create a full-width frontal graphic. And below, expressive fog light elements give the vehicle a bold personality while providing additional wattage for illuminating off-the-beaten-track excursions. The Trail’ster’s rear view takes on a tough-looking appearance framed by LED taillamps that are built into durable, ruggedized light housings. Highlighting its off-road prowess, the Trail’ster wears aluminum skidplates around the entire vehicle, providing a protective armor to shield the undercarriage from jagged rocks and ice. Within, the Trail’ster’s color and trim palette combines brown leather and aluminum accents to relay an earthy but upscale environment that’s both durable and comfortable. Cabin materials are inspired by snow sports gear and equipment. “We drew from high-quality active lifestyle accessories like snowboarding gloves, boots and helmets to bring a premium level of craftsmanship and character to the interior space,” commented Kearns.

WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM | 162 Kia Trail'Ster Concept.indd 7

2/28/15 11:46 PM

The focal point of this interior is a tactile and sturdy center console incorporating a thickset gear shifter, AWD controls and a bright red ignition button. Brown leather-trimmed seats feature a pillow-embossed textile for the seat inserts and the floor mats feature aluminum inlays for all-weather traction. Other interior finishes and details were also inspired by the top-quality materials of cold-weather sporting gear, like leather, high-gloss paint and metallic trim. Being based on the Kia Soul means the Trail’ster also benefits from efficient packaging and an abundance of space for passengers and their cargo as they head out on their next adventure. Ready to Roam Anywhere The Trail’ster is primarily powered by a robust 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine outputting 185 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque through a six-speed automatic transmission, matched to an electric all-wheel-drive system on the rear axle intended for low-speed assist, enhanced launch acceleration and improved traction in inclement weather or off-road situations. In addition, this approach helps mitigate turbo lag by providing instant torque. 163 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM Kia Trail'Ster Concept.indd 8

2/28/15 11:47 PM

The system also improves fuel economy over standard all-wheel-drive setups by operating only when needed and serving as an energy recovery mechanism. Further defining the near future perspective of Soul as a capable and efficient all-wheeldriver runner, the Trail’ster arrives as a “Through-the-Road” hybrid, which means it has two power sources (a front gas engine and a rear electric motor) that make up the hybrid system and meet “through the road,” as opposed to inside the transmission with a common driveline connection. It requires all four wheels being driven in careful coordination, but there’s no mechanical link between engine and electric motor. The link between the two is the road itself. “This powertrain strategy of a downsized turbo and ‘Through-the-Road’ hybrid power yields a dual benefit of increased performance – torque and traction – and optimized efficiency,” said Kearns. “This is AWD being done the advanced, intelligent and responsible way, while sacrificing nothing.” Should the Trail’ster find its way to production, fuel economy would be targeted at a 25-30 percent improvement in city driving and 5-10 percent in highway driving over the normally aspirated 2015 2.0-liter gasoline Soul. WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM | 164 Kia Trail'Ster Concept.indd 9

2/28/15 11:47 PM

The Trail’ster’s electric propulsion system draws energy from a 1.2 kWh Lithium Ion Polymer battery powering a 27 kW, 270 volt AC synchronous permanent magnet electric motor outputting 35 horsepower and 100 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels and bringing total output to an impressive 220 horses and 285 pound-feet of torque. To further improve fuel efficiency, the system also utilizes a Hybrid Starter Generator (HSG) to start/stop the engine as needed (and to feed energy to the high voltage battery), and an electrically driven A/C compressor, which can run when the engine is shut off. This technology is designed for easy, lightweight packaging, with the compact battery pack stored under the cargo floor. Operationally, the rear electric drive system engages in one of three scenarios, depending on throttle position and road conditions: Under light throttle, the Trail’ster attains true clean mobility as the electric motor drives the car solely for a range of two to three miles; under normal driving, the rear electric motor assists the 1.6-liter turbo during acceleration events calling for greater power and torque; when treading off-road or on wet pavement, the electric drive system is introduced when front wheel slippage is detected. Finally, the Trail’ster’s electric motor acts as a generator to recover kinetic energy and recharge the battery when the vehicle is braking or coasting. 165 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM Kia Trail'Ster Concept.indd 10

2/28/15 11:47 PM

For traversing tough terrain, the Trail’ster has been raised more than two-and-a-half inches over the production Soul. In addition, this mountain rover wears Pirelli Winter Carving 245/45-19 snow tires for enhanced traction and utilizes KSport coilover shocks to absorb the impact of rough, uneven ground and rocky surfaces.

Efficiency, Capability, Class and Detail Ram Truck Announces New Laramie Limited Ram continues building momentum with new top-of-class Laramie Limited model Prominent badge, Argento wood and premium leather are key ingredients of new Ram Laramie Limited design, treasured by high-end pickup buyers. Laramie Limited trim is part of Ram’s strategy to continue its aggressive pace in the truck market. Ram Truck brand is taking the 2015 Ram Laramie Limited the benchmark in truck opulence to an even higher level of sophistication and attention to detail. The upgraded interior and exterior trim aligns with a long list of best-in-class titles under the Ram moniker, including fuel economy, payload, torque and towing capacity. “Among Ram Truck’s greatest strengths is our ability to quickly react to customer demand,” said Bob Hegbloom, President and CEO, Ram Truck Brand — FCA US LLC. “The new Laramie Limited trim is a perfect example of how Ram directly responds to customer input with the highest level of luxury available in pickups. The Laramie Limited trim exceeds the high expectations of affluent truck buyers by combining capability with refinement.” 189 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM 2015 Ram 1500 Laramie Limited.indd 4

2/28/15 11:54 PM

Featuring premium materials, such as an all-black, full-leather seating, real wood interior components and unique badges, Ram Laramie Limited is a “black-tie” luxury alternative to the popular southwestern-themed Laramie Longhorn edition pickup. “Today’s high-end Ram pickups have more features than select luxury sedans,” added Hegbloom. “We will continue to strive for the highest levels of sophistication, while keeping the core needs of a truck owner top of mind.” The new Ram trim, available on the1500, 2500 and 3500 models, will make its debut at the 2015 Chicago Auto Show, which opens to the media on Feb. 12, 2015. Exterior The Laramie Limited’s all-new grille is the most prominent change of the exterior. As the leading point of the new Limited, its new billet port grille breaks from the long tradition of a crosshair styling with bold “RAM” lettering. Exterior features include a body-color front fascia with fog lamps and a matching, painted rear bumper. For added flash, an optional exterior package covers the front and rear bumpers in bright chrome. To address customer demand, select-colored Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks come standard with chrome.

2/28/15 11:54 PM

On each side of the grille, a quad headlamp design includes a bi-functional halogen projector system placed in a dark background. Fifteen amber LEDs illuminate park/ turn/position lamps and three amber LEDs serve for the side markers. A vertically ribbed inner lens softens the glow and retains the improved visual component of the segment exclusive LEDs. The Ram design team carefully crafted the interior bezel and housing to create a visually entertaining, yet functional piece of hardware. Also, a Ram shield logo is molded into the housing, and the Ram name molded into the inside of the outer lens. The side profile of the Limited is dressed in chrome accents for body-side molding with etched “Limited” mirrors, door handles, window molding and standard wheelto-wheel side steps. Ram 1500 Laramie Limited features an all-new 20-inch forged multi-surface aluminum wheel – unique in the truck market and a detail not to be missed. Polished surfaces are accented with painted silver. Heavy Duty models also feature a new multi-surface 20-inch fully-polished aluminum, six-spoke wheels. Wheel centers are embossed with the Ram brand name. 191 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM 2015 Ram 1500 Laramie Limited.indd 6

2/28/15 11:54 PM

Matching the new front grille theme, a new tailgate design is fixed with a 20-inchwide, bright chrome “RAM” badge so onlookers can clearly identify the truck. A new chrome accent strip lines the base of the gate. Premium tail lamps are equipped with 15 red LEDs and three red LEDs for the side marker. A frosted inner lens creates visual entertainment and softens the glow. The Ram Laramie Limited is available in seven exterior color choices, including: Brilliant Black, Bright Silver Metallic, Pearl White, Red Pearl, Granite Crystal Metallic, Maximum Steel Metallic and True Blue Pearl. Interior The 2015 Ram Laramie Limited is the apex of modern luxury. Subtle stitching accents, pin striping, unique materials and patterns are found throughout the interior. These are details created for the customer who appreciates them. The Limited starts with an all-black leather cockpit – the seats are covered in Black Natura Plus premium leather. Unique pinstripe stitching designs lend the Ram Laramie Limited an unmatched level of sophistication and style. Graystone leather piping rides the stitching peaks, creating a visible silhouette profile of the seats contrasting an all-black backdrop. Using an idea borrowed from the Longhorn trim, rear flap-closure seatback map pockets with modern, chrome Ram-lettered buckles also are unique to Laramie Limited.

Passenger touch points are given a soft, comfortable feel. The Ram Laramie Limited’s newly designed, deep and double-stacked center console is topped with a forgiving, French-stitched full-leather lid and pronounced Limited badge, covering USB, Auxiliary and 12-volt service points. Just forward of the console lid, a new bin houses a cellular phone and tablet holder, which can be concealed with a new tambour wood sliding door. The real wood door is made from Black Argento, the chosen timber for the Limited interior. The collective Silver pinstripe theme runs through the wood and a satin chrome handle rolls the door with ease. Laramie Limited includes a leather-wrapped steering wheel from the 2 o’clock to 10 o’clock positions. The remaining portion of the steering wheel receives high-gloss Black Argento treatment with silver accent lines. A-pillar and B-pillar handles feature a leather wrap with rollover Graystone stitching. The column-mounted shifter on Ram 2500 and 3500 Heavy Duty models also receives leather treatments with accent stitching and satin chrome accents. Ram 1500 models feature a machine-spun aluminum shifter mounted on the instrument panel with knurled edges to assure finger and glove traction. 193 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM 2015 Ram 1500 Laramie Limited.indd 8

2/28/15 11:54 PM

Placed into a black mask background, Ram Laramie Limited’s Liquid Graphite-faced gauges are surrounded with diamond knurled, Liquid Chrome rings, a design cue inspired by modish watches. Gauge needles are finished in white with Liquid Graphite painted hubs. Limited’s cluster also has a unique modern font, with clean white accent lighting to further differentiate the trim. The instrument panel is topped with Graystone accent stitching and fitted with a Liquid Graphite glove box spear, pinstripe design and understated “Limited” badge. The 2015 Laramie Limited features the next generation 8.4-inch Uconnect system with standard navigation. Digital background screens are tailor-made to the highclass trim, another detail valued by premium truck customers. The center stack is finished off with K-black Dark Metallic paint, Argento inlays and surrounded by large Liquid Graphite bezels. Front and rear door trim are layered in premium leather. Armrest uppers are accented with matched French stitching and pinstripe stitching designs. The top of the door panel is covered in ultra-soft Natura Plus leather, uncommon in trucks. Highgloss Argento wood spears with silver accent lines lay above the armrest upper and satin chrome trim rings and badges provide subtle flair.

Ram Laramie Limited editions receive remote LED lighting at the inside door handles, and a full-length light that illuminates the truck’s multifunction lower map pockets, front and rear. Beneath the dash is soft footwell lighting, providing both functional and aesthetic properties. New for Ram Truck, and debuting on the 2015 Laramie Limited model, is an allblack headliner and pillars combination. This change allowed designers to control where contrasts exist best for visual appeal. Finally, passengers will enjoy solid Black premium Berber carpet floor mats, which are removable by using Liquid Graphite snaps, leaving a rubber, slush and mud-capturing mat with Limited badge. The carpet continues the silver-lined theme, which matches the steering wheel, center stack, console tambour door and door spears. For entry and exit, brushed-silver Ram-branded door-sill plates resist scuffs and add visual appeal and close out the most luxurious interior available in a pickup — the 2015 Ram Laramie Limited.

Since its introduction in 2012, Police Interceptor Utility quickly became America’s best-selling police vehicle, helping Ford capture 55 percent of the U.S. law enforcement vehicle market. The 2016 Ford Police Interceptor Utility was developed with input from the Ford Police Advisory Board to handle the extreme rigors of police duty. In the business of fighting crime, performance and durability are king. Ford Police Interceptor Utility is the only Pursuit Rated midsize utility vehicle; Ford’s utility and sedan versions are the only Pursuit Rated vehicles with standard all-wheel drive. “Our Police Interceptor Utility is the best-selling police vehicle in America because we have a unique relationship with our customers,” said Jonathan Honeycutt, Ford North American marketing manager for Police Vehicles. “By listening to the Ford Police Advisory Board, we have engineered a vehicle that officers love.” Customer-driven innovation To create the most innovative law enforcement vehicles, Ford listened to the experts. The Police Advisory Board was created by Ford to refine and develop future products that meet the needs of law enforcement agencies. The board, created in 2000, consists of a rotating panel of 25 experts from the law enforcement community. The group has supplied Ford with customer feedback and served as a pilot group for products, programs and services.

2/28/15 11:55 PM

The 2016 Ford Police Interceptor Utility features a new front and rear design, new headlamps, a new instrument panel and an enhanced electrical system to distribute electrical loads more efficiently. Available Surveillance Mode technology warns the driver when someone approaches the rear of the vehicle. Upon detection, the driver’s window automatically raises and all doors lock. Ford is the first manufacturer to bring this innovative feature to market. As a direct response to customer feedback, Ford added a liftgate release switch, accessible to occupants in the front. It allows the rear liftgate mechanism to remain unlocked for 45 seconds before timing out, permitting officers to access the cargo area. A rear camera with washer is standard for the 2016 model with a 4-inch screen in the center stack. As an option, the view from the camera can be seen in the rearview mirror. Police Interceptor Utility comes standard with a 3.7-liter V6 producing 304 horsepower and 279 lb.ft. of torque, while an available 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 makes 365 horsepower and 350 lb.ft. of torque, allowing agencies to select the engine that best meets their patrol requirements. Police Interceptor Utility’s standard all-wheel drive is designed to deliver low-speed traction and high-speed handling and stability. WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM | 202 Ford Police Interceptor.indd 5

2/28/15 11:55 PM

“From the heavy-duty suspension and powertrain offerings, to the unique steering and transmission calibrations, Ford Police Interceptor Utility is built to provide any law enforcement agency a vehicle ready to meet extremely demanding needs,” said Arie Groeneveld, chief engineer for the new Police Interceptor Utility. Both engines have been calibrated to meet extreme test requirements defined by the Michigan State Police and Los Angeles County Sheriff ’s Department. Tests include aggressive driving on road courses and racetracks, braking and acceleration, top speed and city pursuit testing. In both Police Interceptor models, the standard six-speed transmission features a unique Pursuit Mode specifically programmed for law enforcement use. The transmission automatically switches from normal, fuel-saving operation to Pursuit Mode when it detects aggressive driving situations, based on brake line pressure, deceleration and lateral acceleration rates. Once in Pursuit Mode, the upshift and downshift performance of the transmission is optimized for aggressive driving, returning to fuel-save mode when it senses the aggressive driving is complete. 203 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM Ford Police Interceptor.indd 6

2/28/15 11:55 PM

The software is tuned to perform a reverse Jturn, which is when a reversing vehicle is spun 180 degrees and continues, face forward, without changing direction of travel. In addition to unique cooling systems designed for extreme use, Police Interceptor also features custom-developed brakes designed to withstand excessive use. The 18inch steel wheels have high venting characteristics to help cool the brakes. The vehicle has been designed to stand up to the demands of police work, with heavy-duty powertrain mounts, reinforced subframe mounts and unique hubs and bearings. Larger-diameter springs are used in the suspension. The upgrades help ensure every Police Interceptor model can handle the extreme rigors of law enforcement work. Even the tires are specifically designed to meet durability and pursuit standards, with some departments logging as many as 50,000 miles per year. The unibody structure of Police Interceptor Utility features boron steel in the A-pillar and a hydroformed, high-strength steel tube that runs the width of the vehicle to improve structural rigidity. Interior and exterior dimensions remain the same for the 2016 model. WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM | 204 Ford Police Interceptor.indd 7

2/28/15 11:55 PM

Designed in Dearborn, built in Chicago Police Interceptor Utility and Police Interceptor Sedan are sold in more than 80 markets around the world, but built in the heartland of America, at Ford’s Chicago Assembly Plant. Once initial work is completed at Chicago Assembly Plant, the vehicles are transported less than a mile away to Troy Design and Manufacturing to be upfitted with law enforcement equipment. A wholly owned subsidiary of Ford, Troy Design and Manufacturing operates out of a 54,000-square-foot facility, where approximately 200 workers bring Police Interceptor vehicles to life. Law enforcement agencies can select from 125 packages, which include a variety of lighting options, wraps and styles. Last year, an estimated 269,000 police-duty accessories were installed on 36,000 vehicles before shipping to police departments across the globe. One of the most important and recognizable features of Police Interceptor are the lights. The 2016 Police Interceptor Utility allows agencies to choose from up to 25 different patterns. The lights are now better integrated into the new front and rear fascia, allowing for a more seamless design and a stealthier look for patrol duty. 205 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM Ford Police Interceptor.indd 8

2/28/15 11:55 PM

In a nod to police vehicle nostalgia, Ford added a blinking white function called “wig-wag” to the incandescent high-beam light bulbs. Other key technologies available on Ford Police Interceptor Utility: Ballistic shields built to Level III specifications determined by the National Institute of Justice Standard, factory-installed in the driver and passenger doors for additional protection against gunfire. SYNC, a hands-free information technology so officers can operate various communication and audio equipment by voice control Available Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), which uses two radar sensors located in the rear quarter panels to detect vehicles in the surrounding lanes. If a vehicle enters the driver’s blind spot zones, the system alerts the driver with a warning light in the sideview mirror. Available cross-traffic alert, which uses existing BLIS radar modules to sense oncoming traffic when slowly backing out of a parking spot. The system functions only while the vehicle is in reverse and warns when cross traffic appears within three carwidths. Available Reverse Sensing System, which emits an audible tone to alert the driver to certain objects up to 6 feet behind the vehicle

2/28/15 11:57 PM

VELOSTER TRANSMISSIONS Hyundai’s commitment to making the Gamma engine extremely fuel efficient continues by pairing it with a standard six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed EcoShift dual-clutch transmission (DCT) developed by Hyundai. Hyundai’s EcoShift DCT takes the benefits of a manual transmission, including low fuel consumption, and blends them with automatic transmission benefits, such as high comfort levels and smooth shift quality. In addition, the EcoShift DCT enables direct connection for high efficiency and uninterrupted torque transfer during shifts. This powertrain also has an Active ECO mode which modifies engine and transmission control for improved fuel economy. The EcoShift DCT also incorporates Hyundai’s Hillstart Assist Control (HAC). HAC is designed to minimize rolling backwards on steep ascents. Veloster Turbo is paired with a standard six-speed manual transmission or a new for 2016 seven-speed dual clutch (DCT) automatic transmission. Both transmissions were developed in-house by Hyundai. The new Veloster Turbo seven-speed automatic transmission features steering wheel-mounted paddle-shifters and SHIFTRONIC(r) transmission gear control, and is more performance-tuned in comparison with the non-turbo model’s DCT. This transmission was specifically engineered to handle the increased torque output from the turbocharged engine. The non-turbo Veloster’s EcoShift DCT was tuned especially for fuel efficiency rather than the higher torque and performance calibration of the Veloster Turbo seven-speed DCT. 215 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM 2016 Hyundai Veloster.indd 8

Turbo Model 7-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) TURBO R-SPEC MODEL The heart of the Turbo R-Spec is the responsive, 1.6-liter, direct-injected, turbocharged engine, along with unique design cues and enhanced chassis tuning. Sport suspension and steering settings have been retuned for optimum responsiveness, with higher spring rates and a more rigid transmission mount. The Turbo R-Spec offers a 6-speed manual transmission with short-throw B&M Racing(r) Sport Shifter for a tighter, more direct shift feel. New for 2016, the seat belts for the Turbo R-Spec are now red, reflecting the model’s performance intent. Inside, red leatherette bolsters with red/black cloth insert sport seats complement special embroidered-logo R-Spec floor mats for a sporty ambience. On the exterior, R-Spec badging adorns the rear hatch. Veloster Turbo R-Spec is available in three exterior colors: Elite White, Ultra Black and Pacific Blue.

VELOSTER TURBO PERFORMANCE The 1.6-liter turbocharged, direct-injected four-cylinder engine produces 201 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 195 lb.-ft. of torque from 1,750 rpm. Veloster Turbo models feature Active Sound Design, which enhances intake and exhaust powertrain sound character inside the cabin for an even more involving driving experience. Turbo models generate 201 horsepower on regular fuel, which represents a best-in-class specific output of 125.6 horsepower per liter. TURBO MODEL EXCLUSIVE: TORQUE VECTORING CONTROL All Veloster Turbo models offer Torque Vectoring Control (TVC). This active cornering feature, utilizing capabilities from the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and powertrain control systems, allows Veloster Turbo to improve dynamic cornering during more enthusiastic driving. TVC uses wheel speed sensors coupled with ESC algorithms to apply precise braking force to the inside front wheel during spirited cornering. This active braking redirects power to the outside front wheel in the turn, reducing wheelspin for enhanced cornering grip and corner-exit acceleration. Overall, this provides Veloster Turbo drivers with an incremental margin of cornering precision during enthusiastic driving. Veloster Turbo also features a quicker-ratio steering rack and a revised steering calibration to match, which gives drivers precise cornering, feedback and control. For 2016, the 18-inch alloy wheel tire width has been increased by 10mm, fitted with Kumho Solus 225/40R18 tires, designed to extract maximum performance without compromising ride. 217 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM 2016 Hyundai Veloster.indd 10

ELOSTER FUEL EFFICIENCY Through the application of these advanced engine technologies and weight-saving measures, Veloster Turbo and non-turbo offer solid performance from 1.6-liters of displacement, and superb fuel economy as well. Veloster’s compelling combination of performance with efficiency is a formula many industry competitors are seeking to duplicate. Hyundai’s development focus on all the factors of efficient performance, such as direct-injection, small-displacement turbocharged engines, six-speed and dual-clutch transmissions, comprehensive light-weighting, efficient aerodynamics, and reduction of parasitic engine losses through electric-powered ancillaries, have combined to yield simultaneous benefits in performance and efficiency to the consumer. SPORT-TUNED DYNAMICS Veloster and Veloster Turbo are fitted with a McPherson strut front suspension, coil springs, gas shock absorbers and a 23-mm diameter front stabilizer bar. The rear suspension is a light-weight V-torsion beam, with an integrated 24-mm stabilizer bar to allow bracing of the arms for greater rigidity and to further control body roll. The rear suspension also uses monotube shock absorbers for ride comfort with control. Veloster features electric power steering that adjusts assistance to changing driving conditions while improving fuel economy over a conventional steering system. Veloster’s turning diameter of 34.1 feet is better than Mini’s 35.4 feet, Civic Si’s 37.1 feet, VW GTI’s 35.8 feet, VW Beetle Turbo’s 35.4 feet, and Fiat Abarth’s 37.6 feet. OVERALL DIMENSIONS The Veloster rides on a 104.3-inch wheelbase, with an overall length of 166.1 inches and width of 70.5 inches. The Veloster Turbo has the same a 104.3-inch wheelbase, but is 1.2 inches longer (167.3 inches) and 0.6 inches wider (71.1 inches). WORLD-CLASS WEIGHT EFFICIENCY World-class weight efficiency is a program target for all Hyundai models. This strategy delivers outstanding fuel economy and performance simultaneously. At just 2,679 pounds, the Veloster base model is 403 pounds lighter than the Scion tC. Further, at just 2,877 pounds, Veloster Turbo is 125 pounds lighter than the Honda Civic Si Coupe and 95 pounds lighter than the Volkswagen GTI. This priority on weight efficiency allows the Veloster Turbo to deliver a great combination of agility, performance, and fuel efficiency. WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM | 218 2016 Hyundai Veloster.indd 11

ADVANCED STANDARD SAFETY All Velosters feature a rearview camera fitted to all models for superior parking visibility. Velosters have an exceptional level of standard safety features for the sporty coupe segment highlighted by a Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system, which optimally manages ESC (Electronic Stability Control) and the Motor-Driven Power Steering (MDPS). VSM works to control two effects. The first is when a driver accelerates or brakes on a split-mu surface (slippery on one side, dry pavement on the other) and the vehicle wants to pull in one direction. VSM detects this condition and sends a signal to the MDPS to apply steering assist to counter this force. VSM counters the pull and automatically provides counter steering. VSM reacts the same way during sudden lane changes or fast cornering. All Velosters feature six airbags—including dual front, front seat-mounted side-impact, and front and rear side curtain airbags. Velosters also features a state-of-the-art braking package. The package includes four-wheel disc brakes and an Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) including Brake Assist, which provides maximum braking force when a panic stop is detected, and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), to automatically adjust the braking force to front and rear axles based on vehicle loading conditions. ENHANCED AUDIO/NAVIGATION SYSTEM CONNECTIVITY Customers expect to be connected to their electronics at all times, so Veloster comes standard with a multifunction seven-inch touchscreen display. At engine start-up, the screen comes to life with a Veloster image and a unique sound. There are even three interface layouts users can choose from to suit their personal taste. For 2016, Veloster audio/navigation systems have also been enhanced with the following capabilities and improvements: * Multi-touch screen with menu swipe function * HD Radio(r) capability * “Eyes Free” Apple Siri(r) integration for iPhone * Advanced SiriusXM(r) functions, including Travel Link (90-day trial) * On-board music and app storage (Jukebox 6GB and Apps 4GB) * Navigation map and music split-screen display function 219 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM 2016 Hyundai Veloster.indd 12

2/28/15 11:57 PM

* Navigation map with enhanced junction-view lane guidance A Bluetooth(r) hands-free phone system with voice recognition, address book download and audio streaming is standard and onboard navigation is optional. The system also integrates a rearview camera. Pandora(r) internet radio is integrated into all Velosters. The display screen has a Pandora icon to stream internet radio from an iPhone(r) or Android(r). Pandora can also be viewed on the display screen and songs can be given the familiar Pandora thumbs up or thumbs down. With video games being an important element of entertainment, Hyundai integrated an RCA cable and an available 115-volt power outlet in Veloster to support gaming consoles for ultimate gaming sessions or to watch videos on the seven-inch multimedia touchscreen when the vehicle is parked. Veloster Turbo features a standard 450-watt Dimension Premium Audio system with eight speakers including an eight-inch subwoofer, external amplifier and iPod(r)/ USB/auxiliary input jacks. A SiriusXM(r) Satellite Radio interface is also integrated into the head unit and features channel logos and Data services, such as NavWeather(r), Stock Ticker and Sports Ticker. For 2016, SiriusXM Travel Link(r) has been added, with a 90-day trial period. CONNECTED CARE AND HYUNDAI BLUE LINK(r) The 2016 Veloster offers the next-generation of Hyundai Blue Link(r), with enhanced safety, service and infotainment telematics. Blue Link brings seamless connectivity directly into the car with technology like remote start, destination search powered by Google(r), remote door lock/unlock and stolen vehicle recovery. Call it a trio of firsts in the Second City as the refreshed Toyota Avalon and sporty Camry and Corolla Special Editions made their world debuts at the 2015 Chicago Auto Show. The three models rode into Chicago with a head of steam as the Avalon, Camry and Corolla are each the sales leaders in their respective segments, a first for Toyota. All three vehicles are 2016 models and will go on sale later this fall. Refreshed 2016 Avalon Unveiled as all-new in 2012, the fourth-generation Avalon was the first vehicle to meet Toyota President Akio Toyoda’s challenge to create cars that spark people’s emotions. Toyota mixed its legendary Quality, Durability and Reliability (QDR) with a strong dose of emotion through fresh new styling, improved performance, and high-tech features. They proved to be winning ingredients as Avalon quickly grabbed the attention of mid-size premium car buyers in segment leading numbers. Five distinct grades on the V6 models will give customers a wide array of choice (XLE, XLE Plus, XLE Premium, Limited and Touring). Hybrid customers can choose from three separate grades, adding luxury features and technology options as they move up the chain from XLE Plus to XLE Premium and Limited. Two unique suspension systems were developed for the 2016 Avalon to better align with diverse customer preferences. One retuned suspension prioritizes a comfortable ride for the XLE through Limited grades. The other, provides a more dynamic and responsive driving experience for the Touring grade. Both of these suspension tunings are new and represent significant improvements over the current production Avalon.

At the 2015 Chicago International Auto Show, the 2015 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat was awarded the “Auto-V Magazine Favorite Car”. “The new Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat has quickly captured the world’s imagination,” said Bill Adam, SAMA president. “Other automotive manufacturers have made high horsepower vehicles over the years, but none comes close to this one. Dodge has built a family capable performance sedan that is sinister and powerful looking, while still able to achieve impressive gas mileage, making this car the 2014 Star of the Show.” The new 2015 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat is powered by the new supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI® V-8 engine. Its 707 horsepower matches the highest rating of any V-8 engine in Chrysler Group’s celebrated history – that of the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat – making it the quickest, fastest and most powerful production sedan in the world, as well as the most capable and technologically advanced fourdoor muscle car in America. The supercharged HEMI V-8 engine is mated to the new segment-first TorqueFlite 8HP90 eight-speed automatic transmission.

The unrivaled four-door performance numbers tell an impressive story with an NHRA-certified, quarter mile in 11.0 seconds, 0-60 miles per hour (mph) in 3.7 seconds, 0-100-0 mph in under 13 seconds and a top speed of 204 mph. Additional performance attributes of the new Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat include the largest brakes ever offered in a Chrysler Group vehicle – 15.4-inch Brembo twopiece rotors with six-piston calipers, 20-by-9.5-inch wide forged-aluminum wheels with Pirelli P Zero performance tires and adaptive damping three-mode suspension. Dodge and SRT designers have re-sculpted and refined nearly every body panel of the new Charger with functional performance cues, including heat extractors in the hood, unique front and rear fascias and dramatic LED lighting in both front and rear. The 2015 Charger SRT models feature restyled driver-focused interiors with premium, soft-touch materials, a new 7-inch thin-film transistor (TFT) customizable digital instrument gauge cluster and a new instrument panel center stack with the latest generation 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen media center. Driving the 2015 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat was an amazing experience. Getting into the Charger SRT, not knowing what kind of ride you are in for is something that will totally catch you off guard. The moment we started up the Charger the sound of the engine and the muffler was breathtaking. As we drove around the garage with the Charger you can tell that this car screams to be opened up on a track for every reason. The accelaration on the Charger is also impressive and not to mention the smooth handling as we took sharp turns in the convention garage. All I could of think to myself was I wish I can take this car to a real race track open up the 707HP that the SRT Hellcat pumps out. After test driving the Charge SRT Hellcat, we wanted to spend some more time with this beautiful machine. Dodge definitely out-done themselves with this one and they have a real gem in their line up of high performance cars in their stable. To see a 4 door sedan perform like a supercar similar to your Lamborghini’s or Ferrari’s is mind blowing.
