The all-new second generation 2016 Jaguar XF large luxury sedan featuring Jaguar aluminum-intensive construction will bring a unique blend of design, technology, and refinement to the segment. With the launch of the 2016 XF sedan in Winter 2015, all current Jaguar models will now feature lightweight aluminum construction, as will future models such as the Jaguar XE sports sedan and Jaguar F-PACE performance crossover. The large luxury class sedan will be offered in rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, with a choice between two V6 supercharged engines and the brand’s most comprehensive suite of advanced performance, driver assistance and infotainment technology. DESIGN Redesigned from the ground up using Jaguar aluminum-intensive architecture, the second generation Jaguar XF delivers better proportions, more interior space and a progressive, highly streamlined form. Taking its rightful place between the mid-size Jaguar XE and the full-size luxury Jaguar XJ sedans, the all-new Jaguar XF features a more vertical front end, shorter front overhang, longer wheelbase and new rear quarter windows. Mirroring the evolution of the Jaguar design language, the sleek, coupe-like profile, long hood with deep power bulge and the short front overhang make the XF stand apart from the crowd.

5/7/15 5:12 PM
“In creating the all-new XF, as a design team we have been driven by discipline, the discipline of simplicity. Every exterior line on the XF has a clear purpose – nothing is superfluous. Achieving that simplicity takes time and requires great determination; it’s all too easy to add lines to a car, but much harder to add character by leaving lines out. Inside too, we have been driven by the desire to ensure the cabin of the all-new XF is as comforting as it is comfortable. New technology is combined carefully with materials that cosset and reassure. The all-new XF has a clear sense of calm and strength, both outside and inside – and I’m proud of my team for delivering that” said, Ian Callum, Director of Design, Jaguar. Benefiting from the design flexibility of the Jaguar modular vehicle architecture, the wheelbase of all-new XF has been increased by 2in (51mm) to 116.5in (2,960mm) while the overall length of the vehicle decreases by 0.3in (7mm) to 195in (4,954mm) long. This longer wheelbase delivers superior packaging that liberates an additional 0.6in (15mm) of rear legroom, 0.9in (24mm) of rear knee room and up to 1.1in (27mm) of rear headroom. The front overhang is now 2.6in (66mm) shorter, emphasizing the car’s dynamic, rearwheel drive stance and the outstanding proportions characteristic to all Jaguar vehicles. The mesh grille is more vertical than before, helping to reduce drag and delivering a more mature look to the vehicle. Aerodynamics are improved by using vents in the front bumper to channel air over the front wheels. This helps to prevent the turbulent wheel wake from disturbing the smooth laminar airflow passing around the car. The headlights, including the optional adaptive full-LED technology, are flush with the surrounding panels, improving aesthetics and aerodynamics. They also feature the signature Jaguar J-Blade LED daytime running lights and a ‘modern quad’ design, referencing the four round lights that Jaguar sedans have made iconic. The fluting running backwards from the top of the headlights is another detail inspired by the rich heritage of the Jaguar brand.

5/7/15 5:12 PM
The one-piece aluminum body side pressings emphasize the Jaguar brand philosophy that surfacing should always be executed with the discipline of simplicity and purity. Designing and manufacturing these panels from a single sheet contributes not only to the overall stiffness of the body, but also to surfacing purity and quality as there are no visible joints. The sweeping, coupe-like profile which defined the first-generation XF has evolved, and now features rear quarter windows. The additional feature allows for a clearer view out from the rear seats, and combined with the standard sunroof, allow more natural light to flood into the cabin highlighting the additional 0.6in (15mm) of legroom and 0.9in (24mm) of knee room delivered by the vehicle. Still relatively high to emphasize dynamics and movement through ideal proportion between the wheel, body and cabin, the waistline is now slightly more horizontal than before. The roofline is lower and the rear deck longer and higher to reduce drag. Running from front to back, peaking above the rear wheel in terms of height and then tapering away, is a chamfered feature line known as ‘the spear of light.’ The reflections make the car appear more lithe, agile and elegant.
20 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM 2016 Jaguar XF.indd 6
5/7/15 5:12 PM
At the rear, the LED tail lights feature the signature Jaguar design from the F-TYPE – a line intersecting a roundel – also used on the Jaguar XE. Here, the design is repeated, creating a clear hierarchy from the Jaguar XE, and an unmistakable pattern at night. The chrome signature blade running across the trunk lid between the light clusters is slimmer than before, highlighting the taut surfaces and dynamic visual balance of the all-new Jaguar XF. To deliver the flush fit of the light clusters and perfect integration of the chrome blade, the trunk lid is made from two steel pressings joined by laser brazing. As well as being energy-efficient, this process was selected for its precision and neat, clean finish. The interior of the XF has always attracted praise, especially the start-up sequence bringing the car to life as the rotary gear selector rises up from the center console and the air vents rotate into position. The goal was to retain that sense of occasion – and the strong, simple lines and horizontal feel of the instrument panel – but mature the design language and the use of materials, befitting the status of the all-new XF now that the Jaguar XE is in position as the entry-level Jaguar sports sedan.
WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM | 21 2016 Jaguar XF.indd 7
5/7/15 5:12 PM
The layered instrument panel, now with the Jaguar signature ‘Riva Hoop’ inspired by the Jaguar XJ, continues into the door, creating a unique cabin feel. This is enhanced by the generous application of veneers such as Gloss Figured Ebony and textured aluminum trim such as Dark Hex. With options such as the reconfigurable, 12.3-inch full-TFT instrument cluster and 10.2-inch touchscreen, four-zone climate control, 10-color ambient lighting, Black Suedecloth headliner and fluted Windsor leather seats, the all-new Jaguar XF reflects the standard for interior luxury and design. The longer wheelbase means the second row sits further away from the rear wheels, improving refinement. This created the opportunity to reduce seat height slightly, contributing to the increased headroom, which gains an additional 1.1in (27mm). Options such as the four-zone climate control system, heated seats and window blinds make the second row more comfortable. The rear bench also features a 40:20:40 split, making it easier to through-load bulky items such as skis or snowboards. The trunk now features an optional power close function. 22 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM 2016 Jaguar XF.indd 8
5/7/15 5:12 PM
ARCHITECTURE AND BODY STRUCTURE Aluminum-intensive construction Used to create inherently light and stiff body structures, aluminum alloys, self-piercing rivets and structural adhesives enhance performance, efficiency, and dynamics. These attributes were engineered into the Jaguar aluminum-intensive architecture from which the all-new Jaguar XF was developed. Also featuring advanced highstrength steels, the aluminum-intensive unibody uses materials intelligently, exploiting each to its full potential. Aluminum is also used to make the hood and front fenders, while the front-end carrier and cross-car beam are cast from even lighter magnesium alloys. Combined with the other weight savings made throughout the vehicle, the all-new Jaguar XF is up to 265lbs (AWD) lighter than its predecessor. Features such as the high-pressure die-cast aluminum front suspension towers increase local stiffness and make a significant contribution to the ride, handling and steering of the all-new XF. WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM | 23 2016 Jaguar XF.indd 9
5/7/15 5:12 PM
The move from an all-steel to an aluminum-intensive unibody leverages more than a decade’s experience of manufacturing luxury vehicles from aluminum in high volume. The one-piece body sides of the all-new XF are testament to expertise in working with the material. Pressed from a single sheet of high-strength 6000-series alloy, the body sides weigh less than 13.2lbs (6kg). Perfecting the deep haunches and the quarter windows incorporated all of the learning from the Jaguar F-TYPE in terms of depth of draw and tightness of radii. Assembly to the rest of the structure uses a two-stage framing process. The technique allows for greater joint efficiency through optimized positioning of the rivets. This translates to increased torsional rigidity of the body, making the all-new Jaguar XF up to 28 percent stiffer than its predecessor. The all-new Jaguar XF is more refined with much of the improvement coming from reducing structure-born noise. Critical to this is that the body behaves as one homogeneous structure: wherever vibration energy finds a discontinuity it will concentrate and then radiate noise through to the cabin.
24 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM 2016 Jaguar XF.indd 10
5/7/15 5:12 PM
Every part of the body was analyzed in this way to ensure that as many potential sources of noise could be designed-out. In some areas, such as the crash structure behind the front bulkhead, fully-sealed, double-wall structures are used. Where sound deadening has been applied, the latest spray-on materials are used due to their combination of higher performance and lower weight. Foam baffles inside the aluminum sections also contribute. These pieces are fitted during assembly: as the body passes through the e-coating ovens the heat causes the foam to expand so that it completely fills the section. A further example of the attention to detail which delivered the vehicle’s low levels of cabin noise is typified by the way in which the high-level brake light is fitted to the body. Running all the way along the full length of the rear glass, this full-LED light has a seal and an acoustic barrier behind it to minimize any noise leakage through to the interior. 5000-series aluminum alloy pressings are used where stiffness is a key, such as in the underframe reinforcements. These include RC5754, a grade unique to Jaguar Land Rover, which is made predominantly from recycled material. Around half of this is scrap sourced from the press shops, helping not only the move towards closed-loop recycling but also reductions in overall electricity consumption and therefore lifecycle CO2 emissions.

2016 Jaguar XF.indd 11
5/7/15 5:12 PM
As part of the intelligent material mix in the body, the rear longitudinal members and the B-pillar reinforcements are made from ultra-high strength hot-formed boron steels, providing exceptional rigidity and stability of the occupant safety cell. CHASSIS The all-new Jaguar XF exceeds expectations of how a sedan should ride, handle and steer. Comfort and refinement have been taken to a higher level and combined with excellent agility and responsiveness. The light yet exceptionally stiff body with its combination of aluminum and advanced high-strength steels delivers a near-50:50 weight distribution. Double-wishbone front and Integral Link rear suspension systems provide the inherently high levels of stiffness needed for agile handling and steering precision with the compliance essential for first-class comfort and refinement. Advanced damper technologies – both passive and continuously-variable – improve ride quality and extend the breadth of dynamic capability of the XF. “The all-new XF has to deliver both driver reward through agility and immediacy of response when it’s called for, and yet great ride composure and comfort too. 26 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM 2016 Jaguar XF.indd 12
5/7/15 5:12 PM
The light and rigid aluminum intensive architecture of the all-new XF is a key enabler for us delivering those attributes, as it provides an optimal basis for finely tuning the ride and handling characteristics of the car. The result is that the new XF is as satisfying to drive quickly, as it is comfortable to be driven in.” – Mike Cross, Chief Engineer of Vehicle Integrity, Jaguar. With many components made entirely from lightweight aluminum, the double-wishbone front suspension of the XF is modeled closely to that of the Jaguar F-TYPE. Its high camber stiffness means that the tires are able to generate lateral force immediately – which translates to sharper and more immediate turn-in. And the high roll camber gain means that the tire’s contact patch is maintained, generating more grip and delivering better feel. Other refinements include lighter springs made from narrower-gauge steel and low-friction, PTFE-lined bushes for the tubular anti-roll bar. Integral Link Rear Suspension The optimum balance of ride and handling requires lateral and longitudinal stiffness to be tuned independently. Integral Link suspension enables the all-new XF to realize exceptional levels of comfort and handling. Bushes soft in recession allow the wheels to move rearwards and upwards upon impact, providing excellent energy absorption characteristics.
WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM | 27 2016 Jaguar XF.indd 13
5/7/15 5:12 PM
At the same time, camber stiffness can be increased, delivering greater responsiveness. Greater caster stiffness can also be achieved, for greater stability under braking. Electric Power-Assisted Steering Steering response and on-center feel are among the most important attributes which define the Jaguar dynamic driving DNA. One of the key enablers to this is the tuning potential of electric power-assisted steering (EPAS). From filters which damp unwanted disturbances caused by road surface irregularities to algorithms which compensate for changes in ambient temperature – EPAS has a lot to offer. Incorporating all of the learning from the F-TYPE and XE, the advantages of EPAS have been fully exploited, giving the all-new XF a more connected feel with an intuitive, linear response. Passive Damping and Adaptive Dynamics Making the body of the all-new XF lighter and stiffer delivers inherent benefits in terms of ride control, but Jaguar dynamics engineers looked closely at other fundamental improvements that could be made. One of the most effective was the integration of next-generation passive damper technology to enhance comfort. The new passive dampers enable frequency-dependent damping – the ability to vary damping force not only with the velocity that the damper piston moves at, but also as a function of its frequency.
28 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM 2016 Jaguar XF.indd 14
5/7/15 5:12 PM
An extra valve in the piston provides an additional bypass. At road speeds typical of town driving, the valve is open, allowing some fluid to flow through it instead of the main valve in the piston. This reduces the damping force and makes the ride smoother and suppler. With increasing speed the valve closes, forcing all of the fluid to pass through the piston: damping force increases and the ride becomes firmer. The Jaguar Adaptive Dynamics system2 has also evolved. Still monitoring body movement 100 times a second and wheel movement 500 times a second, the control algorithms for the adaptive dampers are now more advanced – further enhancing low-speed ride comfort as well improving handling and agility at higher speeds 3.

5/7/15 5:12 PM
Configurable Dynamics First developed for the F-TYPE, Configurable Dynamics takes the duality of character of the XF to the next level. The system allows the driver to individually tailor the throttle mapping, transmission shift strategy, steering feel and Adaptive Dynamics settings using the touchscreen. Configurable dynamics is offered in conjunction with Adaptive Dynamics. POWERTRAIN Enthusiasts demanding the most involving driving experience now have the choice of the Jaguar free-revving 3.0-liter supercharged V6 engine in 340hp and 380hp ratings –equipped with either rear- or all-wheel drive (AWD). Shared with the F-TYPE, these engines combine supercharging with direct-injection and variable intake and exhaust valve timing to deliver exceptional throttle response, linear power delivery and a unique soundtrack. A single balancer shaft enhances smooth-running and refinement, while a carefully-tuned symposer feeds some of the supercharged V6’s induction sound back into the cabin to make exploiting the performance potential even more exhilarating. This is the first time the 380hp version has been used in a Jaguar sedan and is reserved for the all-new XF S. Matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission, this model is capable of covering the 0-60mph sprint in 5.1 seconds on its way to an electronically-limited maximum speed of 155mph.
30 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM 2016 Jaguar XF.indd 16
5/7/15 5:12 PM
Optimized eight-speed automatic transmissions The all-new Jaguar XF is available with one of two specifically-optimized eightspeed automatic ZF transmissions. AWD engines are paired with the familiar 8HP70 transmission, while rear-wheel drive derivatives are matched to the lighter, more compact 8HP45. Combined with the unique Jaguar rotary gear shift controller and paddle shifters, these transmissions offer an exceptional driving experience, blending smooth launch behavior with seamless shifting. The transmission module monitors driving style and adapts its shift pattern to suit. The ECU is also networked to the JaguarDrive Control™, offering quicker shifts and more dynamic kickdown in Dynamic mode, and earlier up-shifts in Eco mode. Torque Vectoring by Braking Another technology proven first on F-TYPE and now standard on the all-new XF is Torque Vectoring by Braking. On corner entry, lightly braking the inner wheels individually can mitigate understeer and help the driver to take the ideal line. Intervention is subtle and virtually transparent to the driver, but the increased agility is felt immediately. All-Wheel Drive with Intelligent Driveline Dynamics With the option of AWD, the all-new XF builds on the success of its predecessor with a next-generation torque on demand system and Intelligent Driveline Dynamics (IDD). To maximize the system’s potential, IDD is networked to the Torque Vectoring by Braking system and the Dynamic Stability Control. IDD is designed to preserve Jaguar dynamics DNA while maximizing the performance and handling benefits of the additional traction, especially in adverse conditions or on poor road surfaces. Primarily a rear-wheel drive sports sedan, the all-new XF also satisfies growing worldwide demand for AWD vehicles. Integrated into the eight-speed automatic transmission, AWD is available with the 340hp and 380hp supercharged V6 engines. In normal driving, all of the torque is sent to the rear axle. But when required, a multi-plate wet clutch diverts torque to the front axle via a chain drive in the transfer case. How much torque is transferred – and when – is controlled by the IDD module, which is integrated into the transfer case. Using sensor data such as yaw rate, steering wheel angle and lateral acceleration, algorithms within the IDD controller continuously estimate road surface friction, and how much of the available grip is being exploited at each tire contact patch. WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM | 31 2016 Jaguar XF.indd 17
5/7/15 5:12 PM
If IDD predicts that the rear tires are approaching the traction limit, torque is seamlessly transferred to the front axle. IDD also functions reactively, and can vary the front-rear torque split to mitigate oversteer in fast corners through yaw damping. Adaptive Surface Response Adding to the AWD capability of the all-new XF is Adaptive Surface Response (AdSR) which is designed to determine what kind of surface the car is driving on – normal roads, wet or gravel roads, or snow and ice – and modify the maps for the steering, throttle, transmission and stability control systems according to the conditions. AdSR, standard on vehicles equipped with both AWD and Adaptive Dynamics, replaces JaguarDrive Control’s Winter mode. AdSR functions throughout the vehicle’s entire speed range.

INFOTAINMENT AND CONNECTIVITY Jaguar InControl Touch The all-new XF features two available infotainment systems. The standard system is InControl Touch and is based around an 8-inch capacitive touchscreen featuring the new Jaguar user interface. Designed to be simple and intuitive to use, the contemporary graphics are crisp and clear. The touchscreen supports gestures familiar to smartphone and tablet users such as ‘swipe’ to perform actions and ‘drag’ to scroll across maps. For customers who prefer voice control, enhanced speech recognition enables the driver to enter destinations into the navigation system or call contacts directly. Text-to-voice technology helps to reduce driver distraction by reading out incoming SMS messages. When the vehicle is stationary the driver can use the touchscreen to compose messages or, for convenience, select one of the stored response templates.

Map data for InControl Touch Pro is stored on a solid-state drive (SSD) that can be accessed in a fraction of the time taken with conventional hard drive systems. Dead-reckoning functionality, which interprets vehicle data up to 40 times a second, can accurately position the vehicle even when GPS signals can no longer be received. Utilizing a data connection enables even greater functionality and location-based features and information. The all-new XF offers door-to-door route planning and guidance incorporating public transport options, Commute Mode which learns your daily drive so that it can automatically offer alternative routes to avoid congestion using historical and real-time traffic information, and Approach Mode which shows a 360° interactive view of your destination when you’re approximately 650ft away. On-board, Gracenote album art stored on the SSD drive enrich the music listening experience while functions such as ‘Play more like this’ make it simpler to access all of your favorite tracks. Adding to the experience, InControl Touch Pro™ includes a 17-speaker, 825W digital surround sound system developed with renowned British audio experts Meridian™. The system benefits from the Meridian Trifield™ and Audyssey’s MultEQ XT technologies which ensure optimum sound reproduction with benchmark low levels of distortion.

These two technologies also ensure that the system’s capability can be further enhanced in the future. Jaguar InControl Features Dialing-in to a conference call, booking a hotel room or just catching up with the news, with the optional Jaguar InControl Apps the all-new Jaguar XF ensures that drivers can seamlessly connect Apple and Android smartphones to the vehicle. Via a USB cable and the dedicated port in the center console, InControl Apps provides access to compatible apps on the device using the vehicle’s touchscreen1. Also compatible with the all-new XF is the new Jaguar InControl Remote, which enables customers to interact with the vehicle using a smartphone. Through the app vehicle owners can bring the cabin to a pre-set temperate by remotely starting the engine, and can check key vehicle data such as fuel tank fill level and door lock status. The app also enables the driver to remotely lock or unlock the car and receive alerts if the alarm sounds, with the option to reset it. A beep and flash feature can help drivers find the vehicle if they’ve forgotten where it was parked or provides a map to lead them to it. Should the vehicle be involved in a collision severe enough to trigger the airbags, InControl Protect is designed to automatically notify emergency services and provide GPS location of the vehicle. Occupants can also trigger an emergency call manually by pressing a button on the upper console. 36 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM 2016 Jaguar XF.indd 22

InControl Protect also features a stolen vehicle locator with the service provider using vehicle location obtained via GPS and vehicle details information to locate the vehicle to work with the law enforcement agencies to recover the car as quickly as possible. ADVANCED DRIVER ASSISTANCE TECHNOLOGY All-Surface Progress Control Pulling away on low-friction surfaces such as snow, ice or wet grass can be challenging; which is why the all-new XF features the revolutionary Jaguar Land Rover All-Surface Progress Control (ASPC) system. Leveraging the knowledge built up over decades of Jaguar Land Rover experience in off-road technologies, ASPC delivers a step-change in capability because there’s no driver input on the pedals: the driver just has to steer. ASPC works like a low-speed cruise control and can operate between 2 mph (3.6km/h) and 19mph (30km/h). The system is activated by pressing a button on the center console and then the driver uses the cruise control switches on the steering wheel to set the maximum speed. What makes ASPC so effective is that it doesn’t just provide fine control of the throttle: it also uses the brakes in opposition to the throttle so that from standstill, only very low engine torque is applied to the driven wheels. This capability is designed to ensure smooth progress with little or no wheel spin. ASPC is standard on the entire XF model range.

Forward-facing stereo camera Located in front of the rear-view mirror, the available forward-facing stereo camera generates a 3D view of the road ahead. The information is interpreted by image processing software and the output used by a wide range of advanced driver assistance systems. One of the most important is the Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) system 2. If the module determines that a collision with a vehicle ahead is likely, the brake system is pre-charged and the driver given audible and visual warnings. If no avoiding action is taken and the collision deemed to be imminent, the system is designed to initiate full braking to avoid it or mitigate the effects. The stereo camera also supports the Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Lane-Keeping Assist (LKA) systems2 available on the Jaguar XF. By monitoring the vehicle’s position relative to lane markings, LDW is designed to notify the driver if they begin to drift out of lane by providing visual warning in the instrument panel and a haptic warning through the steering wheel rim. If the driver drifts too close to the edge of the lane, the LKA system can guide the driver towards the center of the lane by applying a small amount of counter-steering. The amount of torque applied to the steering wheel is slight and can be easily over-ridden by the driver at any time. Available on the all-new XF, the Driver Drowsing Monitoring (DDM) system2 is designed evaluate patterns of driver inactivity, such as little or no steering, pedal or instrument panel activity followed by sudden or excessive inputs, and provide multistage visual and audible warnings when driver drowsiness is noticed. The Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR) system2 relies on the stereo camera to keep the driver informed of speed limits – including temporary limits which apply during road work and variable limits on highways. Camera data is cross-referenced against GPS data to ensure accuracy. If the driver selects the over-speed warning function, the ring around the sign graphic flashes whenever the limit is exceeded. Intelligent Speed Limiter To assist drivers in areas where speed limits change often, Jaguar has developed an Intelligent Speed Limiter (ISL) which uses the TSR system data to monitor changes in the speed limit and automatically increase or decrease the vehicle’s speed to match. 38 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM 2016 Jaguar XF.indd 24
5/7/15 5:13 PM
If the TSR system recognizes a higher speed limit ahead, the system is designed to notify the driver and the vehicle can accelerate smoothly up to the new limit. If the speed limit is lower, the vehicle can be slowed down accordingly. If the driver presses the Resume button, the rate of acceleration or deceleration will increase. Laser Heads-Up Display The all-new XF is the latest Jaguar sedan to feature a laser Heads-Up Display (HUD). Projecting key information such as vehicle speed, gear shift indication and navigation instructions onto the windshield, this system is designed to help the driver keep their eyes on the road. The color images are exceptionally sharp and are adjustable both in height and in brightness, making it easy to find the ideal setting. The HUD may also be switched off if desired. Laser technology offers several advantages over conventional TFT systems. The images it generates offer superior color saturation and higher contrast, so they’re more resistant to ‘washout’ in bright sunlight. And the system is not only more compact, but it’s almost a third lighter.

Adaptive Cruise Control with Queue Assist The Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) system familiar from the previous XF has been enhanced in heavy traffic. Using a long-range 77GHz scanning radar, the system is designed to maintain then enables the all-new XF to track the vehicle in front as the traffic starts moving again.

5/7/15 5:15 PM
In a flowing transition, Mercedes-Benz lands the next coup: the Concept GLC Coupé is a near-production-standard study that carries the successful GLE Coupé formula over into a more compact segment. The dynamically expressive show car combines typical stylistic features of a coupé with the sensually pure design idiom of coming SUV generations. This emotively appealing fusion is further enriched with details that are strong in character. A twin-blade radiator grille, powerdomes on the hood and a four-pipe exhaust system form an aesthetic contrast to the harmonious, almost organic main body section. On the other hand, elements from the rugged offroad world, such as enormous 21-inch tires, front and rear underbody protection, increased ground clearance and side running boards, are indicative of the off-road performance potential of the Concept GLC Coupé. Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Daimler AG, puts it in a nutshell: “With its modern and sensual design idiom, the Concept GLC Coupé gives a foretaste of future SUV models from Mercedes-Benz. At the same time, it embraces the typical values of tradition-steeped Mercedes-Benz coupés”. The same successful blend of the multifunctional SUV and the emotively appealing coupé world of Mercedes-Benz that was so enthusiastically welcomed with the GLE Coupé is now repeated with the Concept GLC Coupé.
44 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM Mercedes-Benz Concept GLC Coupe.indd 4
5/7/15 5:15 PM
However, the near-production-standard show car inhabits a more compact segment, as demonstrated by the external length of 186.2 inches (4.73 meters) and the 111.4 inch (2.83-meter) wheelbase. These two dimensions, together with the striking and muscular main body section, elongated greenhouse and large 21-inch wheels, provide an ideal basis for the typical, almost dramatic proportions of the sportily youthful coupé generation with the characteristic off-road touch. Distinctive front end, sculptural headlamp design At the front, a short, crisp overhang with upright radiator grille and twin-blade louvre so characteristic of sporty Mercedes-Benz models give a first indication of the sporty philosophy behind the Concept GLC Coupé. The credo “Born to race on every ground” is confirmed by the powerdomes on the hood, the sweeping lines of the A-wing below the radiator grille, the large side air intakes and the visually dominant underbody protection. Like all the trim elements on the concept vehicle, this typical SUV feature radiates in silver shadow to form an attractive counterpoint to the solar-beam paintwork and the all-round claddings in matte gun metal magno paintwork.

Reminiscent of light sculptures, striking LED headlamps decisively shape the expressive face of the Concept GLC Coupé. All functions are united in one housing: for illumination, the daytime running lamps and turn indicators use the upper strip inserts, dubbed “eyebrows” by the designers. Below them are three rotating lenses, which appear to positively float in the deep, three-dimensional space and which adapt to the situation to optimally illuminate the road or terrain. Of course, the headlamps are non-dazzling for oncoming traffic in lower beam, upper beam, cornering light or active light mode. This is achieved by blanking out the light cone in the area of oncoming vehicles. Side profile with low-slung coupé greenhouse and large SUV wheels The perfection with which the intrinsically contrary design worlds of the coupé and the SUV have been brought into harmony with each other is revealed in particular by a side view of the just under 63 inch high (1.60-metre) Concept GLC Coupé with the typical, elongated roof line of a sports coupé. Like the integrated roof rails and fully recessed door handles, the squat greenhouse with its frameless side windows blends perfectly into the vehicle’s flanks to additionally underscore the coupélike character. The interplay with the high beltline, wide shoulders and accentuated wheel lips gives rise to extreme proportions that lend the Concept GLC Coupé a thrilling dynamism. This highly charged interaction is given extra emphasis by the drawn-in waist between the dropping line and the lower, rearwards ascending light-catching contour. 46 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM Mercedes-Benz Concept GLC Coupe.indd 6
5/7/15 5:15 PM
A clear indication of the more prominent SUV genes is given by sill extensions reminiscent of the side running boards on a classic SUV. Flush with the outside edge of the body, wide 21-inch wheels with large, heavily profiled tires combine with the relatively high ground clearance to endorse the sportily dynamic off-road ambitions of the Concept GLC Coupé. Rear end with distinct coupé heritage The rear view of the precisely 78.7 inch (two-metre) wide Concept GLC Coupé in particular reveals the wide, muscular shoulders with harmoniously modelled wheel arches that house 21-inch (53.3 cm) wheels with 285/45 R 21 wide-base tires. The four polished stainless-steel tailpipes of the exhaust system provide a visual highlight. Mounted in pairs above an A-wing similar to the one at the front and featuring characteristic underbody protection, the tailpipes underscore the sporty look of the coupé.
WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM | 47 Mercedes-Benz Concept GLC Coupe.indd 7
5/7/15 5:15 PM
Overall, it is the styling of the rear end that most clearly accentuates the coupé genes of the concept vehicle. Narrow, split tail lights, centrally positioned brand star and a sharp spoiler lip emphasize a design line that made its debut with the S‑Class Coupé and which all Mercedes-Benz coupé models have since followed. Relocated to the lower section of the bumper, the number plate as well as the typical form of the rear window with its rounded upper area are among the further stylistic features. The night design of the LED tail lights sets a new tone. Adapted from the headlamps, the strips at the top are home to the turn indicators, which use chasing lights to signal a change of direction. A circular rear light encloses a central lens that adaptively augments the brake lamp for even better visibility. Technical details provide a stimulating contrast Hard technical details give an additional emotive appeal to the Concept GLC Coupé with its almost organic form of the main body section. For example, excitingly designed components such as two-part, open light-alloy wheels, wing-look exterior mirrors and the already mentioned four exhaust tailpipes set a deliberate stylistic contrast intended to underscore the technological claim of the show car. The same goes for the underbody protection with front and rear cooling ducts and the headlamps and tail lights, which resemble light sculptures.

Power aplenty: all-wheel-drive powertrain producing 367 hp The drive technology aboard the Concept GLC Coupé matches the vehicle’s looks. A V6 powerplant delivering 367 hp (270 kW) and 384 lb-ft (520 Nm) makes for a highly sporty level of performance. Familiar from AMG sports models, the direct-injection biturbo engine is teamed with a 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission and 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive to provide the show car with emphatic acceleration while at the same time giving an acoustically audible note to the impressive performance. Depending on the transmission mode setting, the tailpipes give off either a commandingly subdued rumble or the passionate sound of a high-powered sports car. Extension to the SUV world of Mercedes-Benz The SUV world of Mercedes-Benz has room for further models, such as a production version of the Concept GLC Coupé. The wide range of models allows customers the flexibility to order a tailor-made vehicle to suit their personal preferences. At the same time, the show car would enrich the trendsetting coupé world of Mercedes-Benz with a new all-rounder while providing a logical addition to models such as the four-door coupés. In addition to spawning entirely new classes of vehicle, these models have also exerted a considerable impact on the model policies of all manufacturers. They have also proved an outstanding success on the sales front. WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM | 49 Mercedes-Benz Concept GLC Coupe.indd 9

About the historic Fiat Nuova 500 The Nuova 500 was the fruit of a strategy designed to develop and revamp Fiat’s product range, embarked upon by the company during World War II. While the city of Turin was still being targeted by Allied air raids, and the company’s Mirafiori offices were occupied by German troops, Vittorio Valletta, Fiat Managing Director and later company Chairman (after the death of Fiat’s founder Giovanni Agnelli), asked Dante Giacosa to start thinking of new cars that could go into production after the war. The result would be the Cinquecento, an automobile that delivered on its mission to provide efficient and affordable mobility during Italy’s period of rebuilding and economic recovery.
The Fiat Nuova 500 was “the right car at the right time,” and on July 4, 1957, the hatchback marked the rebirth of FIAT and its product range. Exactly 3,893,294 examples of the historic Cinquecento were built between 1957 and 1975, helping to provide an attainable car for Italians and numerous other Europeans. After 18 years of production, the last Fiat Nuova 500 was built on August 4, 1975, at the SicilFiat plant in Termini Imerese (Palermo, Sicily).

The 60/40 rear seatbacks have a greater range of adjustable recline for varying combinations of passengers and cargo, with an increased available recline of 37 degrees compared with 28 degrees for the previous model. ADVANCED, POWERFUL AND EFFICIENT NEW POWERTRAINS 2016 Tucson powertrain offerings also have been improved with top efficiency levels as a primary target. 64 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM 2016 Hyundai Tucson.indd 6
5/7/15 5:19 PM
Base models offer a Nu engine family, 2.0-liter, direct-injected four-cylinder with an estimated 164 horsepower and 151 lb.-ft. of torque, coupled with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The six-speed automatic offers SHIFTRONIC(tm) manual shifting mode and includes an overdrive lock-up torque converter for higher fuel economy at highway speeds. Based on internal tests, fuel economy for the 2.0L FWD model is estimated at 23 (city), 31 (highway), 26 (combined). The 26-mpg combined fuel economy rating is a one-mpg improvement over the previous model. Further, powertrain NVH has been reduced through hydraulic transmission mounting and recalibrated engine mounts. Eco, Sport and Limited models offer a new, Gamma engine family, 1.6-liter turbocharged, direct-injected four-cylinder with an estimated 175 horsepower and 195 lb.-ft. of torque. Peak torque delivery starts at only 1,500 rpm and holds through 4,500 rpm, for low-RPM responsiveness and performance in everyday driving conditions. The turbocharger features low-inertia turbo-spooling response characteristics, and an electronic wastegate control for more precise control of manifold pressure. Internally, piston-cooling oil jets ensure cooler piston temperatures for enhanced engine life.
WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM | 65 2016 Hyundai Tucson.indd 7
5/7/15 5:19 PM
Further, the Gamma engine features a new water jacket insert that automatically prioritizes cooling in the upper level of the cylinder block, where more combustion heat is generated, resulting in lower cylinder head temperatures and allowing for leaner air/fuel mixtures for better fuel efficiency. The turbo engine is coupled to a new, first-in-segment seven-speed EcoShift(r) dual-clutch transmission (DCT). This dual-clutch transmission offers outstanding efficiency with quick, seamless shifting and brisk acceleration. When compared with some competitors’ continuously-variable transmissions, this DCT is able to handle more torque with minimal power interruption throughout the powertrain operating range and with greater durability characteristics. Based on internal tests, estimated fuel economy for this powertrain on Eco FWD models is 26 (city), 33 (highway), 29 (combined), a 5-mpg improvement over the former Tucson 2.4L engine. Sport and Limited FWD turbo engine models are estimated at 25 (city), 30 (highway), 27 (combined), representing a 3-mpg improvement in combined fuel economy over the former Tucson 2.4L engine. In addition, the new Tucson’s fuel tank has been increased by 1.1 gallons for even greater driving range.

5/7/15 5:19 PM
ALL-WHEEL DRIVE CAPABILITY 2016 Tucson will offer an advanced AWD system developed by Hyundai in conjunction with Magna Powertrain. The system includes a driver-selectable AWD lock that allows a differentiated torque split between front and rear wheels, for off-road and extremely slippery road conditions. The system also includes Active Cornering Control, which automatically transfers torque to the wheels with the most traction. The system reduces understeer and enhances cornering performance by braking the inside rear wheel and delivering more torque to the outside rear wheel, providing a torque-vectoring effect. Finally, the system incorporates both Hillstart Assist and Downhill Brake Control to assist drivers facing sharp incline or decline conditions. REFINED, RESPONSIVE CHASSIS The 2016 Tucson platform offers enhanced driving dynamics with more than one inch increase in width and a 1.2 inch increase in wheelbase for greater ride comfort and linear stability. WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM | 67 2016 Hyundai Tucson.indd 9
5/7/15 5:19 PM
The front and rear overhangs were increased in smaller proportion to this increased wheelbase, centering more of the Tucson’s mass within the wheelbase for better handling response and control. Even more, the entire Tucson chassis is more rigid, now using more than 50 percent Advanced High Strength steel compared with 18 percent for the former model. The new Tucson also benefits from strategic use of structural adhesives at higher stress points on the chassis and more extensive use of hot-stamping methods for greater rigidity. The structure also uses four-point bushing mounts for improved comfort and reduced road noise. A world’s first shock-absorber mounting structure, the 2016 Tucson employs a dual-reinforcing panel rear wheelhouse design, which optimizes panels that are prone to vibration, resulting in a 109 percent increase in rigidity, reduced road noise levels and ride and handling improvements. The Tucson suspension has been enhanced for more precise handling without sacrificing ride comfort. The front suspension is a MacPherson strut design, with coil springs, gas-filled shock absorbers and a 24.7 mm stabilizer bar. The rear suspension is an independent, multi-link design, now with dual lower arms for both FWD and AWD, for optimal ride comfort and body control. 68 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM 2016 Hyundai Tucson.indd 10
5/7/15 5:19 PM
Both front and rear suspensions use SACHS(r) dampers and lightweight, hollow stabilizer bars for superior body control in all driving conditions. Rear suspension control arms have been lengthened to minimize camber and toe changes throughout the suspension travel range, which has been increased to better absorb larger impacts. In addition, the jounce bumpers now use a more sophisticated, hydraulic-type design, for more refined responses over larger road impacts. Suspension bushings are now composed of a higher-dampening synthetic rubber for smoother ride characteristics when compared with conventional rubber. 2016 Tucson also offers Drive Mode Select, which allows the driver to customize their Tucson’s dynamic responses, such as steering feel, transmission and overall powertrain responsiveness to their preferences, and to changing road or traffic conditions. LOWER NVH, BETTER AERODYNAMICS To improve NVH characteristics, the 2016 Tucson has applied a number of sound dampening and insulation measures, such as:

IMPROVED STEERING FEEL In addition, steering feel has been enhanced with an improved motor-driven power steering system and extensive use of lightweight, rigid aluminum for the rack assembly, for greater precision and feedback. Overall friction for the steering system has been reduced by more than 20 percent compared to the previous model. The Tucson’s motor-driven power steering is more efficient and quieter than traditional hydraulic systems by reducing parasitic losses from ancillary belts and their continual drag on the powertrain. Further, the steering system has been upgraded for more precise and rapid adjustments in steering feel with changing driving conditions. The steering wheel itself now offers a wider range of tilt and telescopic adjustment for greater driver comfort. SEGMENT FIRSTS AND NEW FEATURES The 2016 Tucson offers several compact CUV segment firsts, including ventilated front seats and YES Essentials(r) stain-resistant seats. COMPREHENSIVE SAFETY FEATURES The 2016 Tucson is expected to receive a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) when equipped with Automatic Emergency Braking. For 2016, new, advanced safety technologies such as Automatic Emergency Braking with pedestrian detection, Lane Departure Warning System, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Cross-traffic Alert, Lane Change Assist, Backup Warning Sensors and standard rearview camera are offered. In addition, advanced high-strength steel represents over 50 percent of the new Tucson’s structure, for enhanced crash safety. The Tucson is engineered to provide its passengers with multiple defensive safety layers. The A-pillar and mirror blind spots were reduced for enhanced driver visibility. The steel unibody has integrated crumple zones and a high-tensile front subframe designed to work together to reduce the forces that typically reach the passenger compartment. The center pillars serve as the anchors of a ring structure which improves overall side structure stiffness while also creating more room for the door armrest and seat. All four doors also have internal guard beams to protect passengers in a side-impact collision. 74 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM 2016 Hyundai Tucson.indd 16
5/7/15 5:19 PM
The entire body shell has been made stiffer and lighter thanks to extensive use of advanced high-strength steel, and the use of Tailor Welded Blanks (TWB) reinforces key structural members. TWB assemblies combine steels of different thickness and grades using a sophisticated laser welding and stamping process to achieve an optimal stiffness-to-weight ratio. TWBs reduce body weight while enhancing crash energy management. Tucson also features a standard Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) that alerts drivers if one or more tires are under-inflated, including the tire’s location. COLOR The new Tucson offers eight appealing exterior colors and three interior color environments. Six of these exterior colors are all-new, including Chromium Silver, Coliseum Gray, Ruby Wine, Mojave Sand, Sedona Sunset and Caribbean Blue. Winter White and Ash Black fill out the diverse eight-color offering. Interior color environments include black, beige and gray in cloth, and black or beige in leather, available on Limited models.

Porsche is highlighting the 2015 convertible season by celebrating the world premiere of the new Boxster Spyder. This pure sports car will make its debut at the New York International Auto Show. The new top model of the Boxster range retains the unique and unmistakable character of the previous Spyder, which has already attained cult status. For example, the classic roadster top is still opened and closed by hand, and the Boxster Spyder is only available with a manual transmission, benefiting both weight savings and driver enjoyment. Staying true to roadster DNA, the Boxster Spyder offers a traditional sports-car driving experience combined with truly exceptional performance. This includes a firm sport suspension with a 20-mm lower ride height, brakes taken from the 911 Carrera S, more direct steering, and a 3.8-liter horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine with an output of 375 hp, culminating in a genuine sports car experience with outstanding driving dynamics. It is the lightest model of the current Boxster line, and the most powerful Boxster to date. Taking only 4.3 seconds to sprint from 0 to 60 mph, the Boxster Spyder has a top track speed of 180 mph. The distinctive design of the Boxster Spyder includes stylistic elements reminiscent of legendary sports and race cars from Porsche. Two prominent streamliners that extend down along the sweeping rear lid behind the headrests pay tribute to the 718 Spyder from the 1960s.

5/7/15 5:20 PM
The manually operated, lightweight top is suitable for everyday use with an electric clasp, while bringing to mind roadsters from the past. The fins that stretch back from the top to the rear lend the vehicle’s silhouette its characteristic design. The front and rear fascia’s also are unique to the Boxster Spyder, and an air outlet is located in front of the forward luggage compartment. More so than in any other Boxster, the interior of the new Spyder creates an atmosphere that elicits a feeling of pure driving pleasure. The driver and passenger sit in standard Sport Seats Plus, while the new steering wheel with a diameter of 360 mm (compared to 370 mm in other Boxster models) helps ensure the mid-engine roadster can be driven precisely and with great agility. In line with the model’s traditional roadster character, neither a radio nor an air conditioner is included as standard equipment in order to reduce weight. However, both can be ordered as optional equipment at no cost. Furthermore, the entire range of Boxster audio systems is available for customers to choose from as an option, including the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system with navigation. The new Boxster Spyder will be launched in the U.S. market in October and can now be ordered at dealerships. In the United States, the MSRP is $82,100, not including a $995 destination charge.

McLaren has completed its three tier model strategy with the global reveal of the first in its Sports Series family: the McLaren 570S Coupé. This pure sports car, with driver optimised layout and electrifying performance, shares its DNA with the McLaren Super Series and Ultimate Series that sit above it in the range hierarchy. The Sports Series introduces McLaren race-derived technologies and design values to a new segment and audience. Like every McLaren, the performance of the 570S Coupé is breathtaking. It combines, as its names suggests, a power output of 570PS (562bhp) with light weight construction to give a class leading power-to-weight ratio of 434PS per tonne. The 570S accelerates from 0 to 100km/h (62 mph) in 3.2 seconds, while 200 km/h (124 mph) is reached in just 9.5 seconds with the pace not letting up until the car reaches a top speed of 328 km/h (204mph). The Coupé is the first bodystyle to be shown in the Sports Series, highlighting the latest evolution of the McLaren design philosophy. The ‘shrinkwrapped’, aerodynamically- optimised form will be seen in public for the first time at the 115th New York International Auto Show. The McLaren design team has created a shape of beauty highlighted by details such as the rear flying buttresses that increase downforce as well as adding grace, and complex door tendons that direct additional air to cool the mid-mounted V8 engine
100 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM McLaren 570s Coupe.indd 4
5/7/15 5:25 PM
The Sports Series features an evolution of the 3.8-litre V8 twin turbo engine, named M838TE, with 30 percent of components bespoke to the new model. Engineered by McLaren, it produces 570PS (562 bhp) at 7,400 rpm, and 600Nm (443 lb ft) of torque at 5,000-6,500 rpm. Power is delivered through a seven-speed SSG transmission, and transferred to the road through the rear wheels. This power is brought under control with standard-fit carbon ceramic brakes, fitted behind a newly designed range of forged alloy wheel options with P ZeroTM Corsa tyres as standard from McLaren technical partner, Pirelli – 225/35/R19 on the front and 285/35/R20 on the rear. The unique carbon fibre MonoCell II chassis has been newly designed with more of a focus on day-to-day usability, offering improved ingress and egress from the cabin. It is incredibly strong and stiff yet weighs less than 80kg, offering optimum levels of protection. This lightweight structure, and the use of aluminium body panels, contributes to a dry weight of as low as 1,313kg (2,895lbs), almost 150kg lighter than its closest competitor. Minimised weight and a turbocharged engine doesn’t just bring great performance. The 570S also delivers excellent fuel efficiency and emissions for car that is also a member of the 200mph club, with fuel economy of 25.5mpg on the EU combined cycle, and emissions of 258g/km. For the US market, this means exemption from gas guzzler tax.

A PURE McLAREN BOTH ON ROAD AND TRACK The 570S shows an evolution in the design direction for McLaren, with the McLaren ‘face’ seen on models in the Super Series and Ultimate Series sharpened further. This unique and striking appearance has been designed by air, with a bespoke aerodynamic package including aero blades below the front bumper giving a purposeful stance while channelling clean, cold air through the lower leading edge of the bodywork. Large ultra bright LED headlamps, fitted as standard to all Sports Series models, flank a sculpted bonnet which channels airflow over the front wheelarches. The intricately designed dihedral doors, a McLaren design signature since the iconic F1, possess a three dimensional form including a ‘floating’ door tendon which houses a discreet door button. This unique feature divides the airflow, channelling it into the side intakes and underneath the flying buttresses. This architectural structure ensures drag is minimised along the profile of the 570S, while also optimising levels of cooling and downforce. Flying buttresses at the rear of the teardrop-shaped glasshouse form part of the aero package, directing air over the shoulderline of the 570S and across the rear deck aiding heat evacuation from the exposed engine bay and increasing downforce. 102 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM McLaren 570s Coupe.indd 6
5/7/15 5:25 PM
Super-formed aluminium rear fenders ensure clean air is delivered to the fixed rear spoiler, again maximising downforce. The rear of the car is clean and uncluttered, with LED light blade rear lamps which follow the form of the sculpted panels. The rear of the vehicle features an aluminium mesh allowing effective heat evacuation as well as a view into the engine bay. This sits below a concave rear window, another signature Sports Series Coupé design cue. The twin exhausts exit below the rear bumper, either side of a newly designed and highly intricate rear diffuser. The Sports Series has its own newly-developed suspension system ensuring enhanced levels of driver engagement and refinement on both road and track. It uses independent adaptive dampers with front and rear anti-rollbars – distinct from the Super Series – and dual wishbones, with the set up controlled by the familiar ‘Normal’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Track’ handling settings. In ‘Normal’ mode, the system provides a refined yet engaging ride, while the ‘Sport’ and ‘Track’ settings allow the 570S to become more track-focused when required.

THE MOST USABLE McLAREN TO DATE Like every McLaren the cabin of the 570S has been designed around the driver, with a clear focus on engagement, visibility, functionality and more than any McLaren before it, day-to-day usability and space. As standard, the sports seats are leather upholstered – racing seats are optional – offering a high level of long distance comfort and support. The dashboard and steering wheel are also all leather trimmed. Intelligent and ergonomic design within the cabin provides extended stowage space, with the most usable space of any McLaren model to date. This adds to the 150 litres of storage in the front luggage bay. The 570S is comprehensively equipped with a full infotainment system including an all new TFT digital instrument cluster that changes configuration according to driving mode, a seven-inch IRIS touchscreen, now with integrated climate control functionality, Bluetooth connectivity and DAB digital / SIRIUS satellite radio (depending on market), mounted on a ‘floating’ centre console. Despite the extensive specification list, weight- saving is still a key focus on the interior and the McLaren Audio four-speaker system ensures the optimal sound quality at the lowest possible weight.
104 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM McLaren 570s Coupe.indd 8
5/7/15 5:25 PM
With the Sports Series, an even greater variety of interior customisation is available with a variety of factory available Alcantara®, nappa leather and carbon fibre options. In addition, McLaren designers have created a range of ‘By McLaren’ bespoke interior specifications, similar to those also available on the 675LT, teaming carefully selected colours and materials designed to best showcase the stylish cabin space and co- ordinate with each exterior paint colour. In addition to this, a McLaren Audio Plus 8- Speaker Upgrade System and bespoke 12-Speaker Premium Audio System with 1280W surround sound upgrade is also available for the ultimate audio experience.

5/7/15 5:26 PM
An Elegant, Dynamic New Look For 2016, Lexus designers have cast a daring new form with the refreshed ES. A commanding front fascia that features Lexus’s trademark spindle grille, framed in combination with accentuated brilliant satin chrome, gives this new ES a new sense of luxury and instantly distinguishes it from the crowd. Accompanying the grille is a pair of newly designed headlights, now equipped with LED projector technology, while iconic “L”-shaped arrowhead Daytime Running Lights (DRL) extend outside the headlight element for a distinctive look that links it with other Lexus models. Also, redesigned fog lamps areas have been relocated to the outer lower corners of the front fascia and amplify the vehicle’s wide stance. A re-sculpted front fascia connects to the hood adding the sensation of motion even when the car is standing still. The sleek shape continues with the ES’ graceful roofline that flows effortlessly to the rear, where an improved, modern taillight design evokes the “L”-shaped theme furnishing an instantly recognizable nighttime glow. Spanning the rear is a re-stylized chrome license plate garnish that flows visually into the clear elements of the lamps to communicate the vehicle’s on-road stability. Adding a considerable amount of flair to the vehicle’s already sporty attitude are newly sculpted chrome-tipped rectangular exhaust ports.

To complement the impactful new form, two 17-inch wheels with directional spoke patterns have been developed. A branching dark gray metallic, multi-plane machined 20-spoke wheel is optional for non-hybrids, while hybrids are distinguished with a 10-spoke design with machine finish over medium gray. Four new exterior colors join the ES palette: Amber, Nightfall Mica, Caviar, and Eminent White Pearl. Like the six existing choices, each features Lexus’ innovative cutting-edge paint technology designed to allow the paint’s clear coat to heal itself even from light damage. Each of the 10 colors were carefully selected to reflect the ES’ dynamic surface and is brought to life by the renowned, multi-stage paint process that gives Lexus models their deep, jewel-like luster. A Luxuriously Updated Cabin with New Levels of Sophistication When it comes to luxury and refinement, Lexus has no equal. Engineered to provide driving confidence and the ultimate in comfort, the ES surrounds its occupants with a luxurious, contemporary cabin. From the sweeping dashboard reminiscent of modern architecture to highly intuitive ergonomics mated with the finest materials and surfaces, the ES cultivates a feeling of sheer quality with every touch. 112 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM Lexus At Shanghai.indd 6
5/7/15 5:26 PM
The 2016 model takes luxury to the extreme with a collection of new interior color combinations, including exquisite multi-color themes that exemplify elegance. The seats are now offered in four different colors: Flaxen, Parchment, Stratus Gray and Black. Customers can choose from the three trim materials: semi-aniline leather, leather and Lexus NuLuxe. In addition, four styles of interior trim have been carefully selected to harmonize with the color choice: Illustrious Piano Black, Linear Dark Mocha Wood, Espresso Bird’s Eye Maple with Shimamoku ornamentation, and new for 2016, Bamboo now has matte finish. First appearing in the GS and LS sedans, Shimamoku is a high-end finish of luxurious wood created through a multi-step manufacturing process by highly skilled craftsmen. Furthermore, an embossed pattern has been added to the comfortable-yet-supportive seats. Additional trim enhancements to cabin-facing door surfaces and the center console unite the interior in upscale feel and design cohesion. Color-matched upholstery appears along the center console as well, coupled with a new leather boot-enclosed gear selector.

A new, sporty steering wheel provides better driving engagement. A larger 4.2-inchThin Film Transistor (TFT) color multi-information display conveniently places vital vehicle and route information as well as multimedia information front and center. To further enhance Remote Touch Interface (RTI) control, the 2016 ES adds “Enter” buttons on either side of the interface controller. Refinement Taken to a New Level and an Expanded Engine Lineup Since its inception, Lexus has offered quiet and smooth driving vehicles. The 2016 ES upholds that tradition with a host of improvements to provide the driver with an exciting experience. For the new 2016 ES, Lexus engineers applied structural reinforcements to foster stiffness in the vehicle’s unibody construction. Adapted from the Lexus IS sports sedan, this form of chassis tuning arms the ES with enhanced ride quality and handling. Moreover, this ES adds a sound-reducing layer behind the dashboard to better isolate engine noise from the cabin.

New for 2016 in specific markets is a 2.0-liter direct-injection four-cylinder engine. Engineered to meet China’s fuel economy regulations, the D4 engine will be offered in China, Russia and Taiwan. In the U.S., the luxury sedan will continue with its exceptionally smooth 3.5-liter V-6 engine and a gasoline-electric hybrid powerplant, while other markets also have a 2.5-liter L4 version. The ES now offers a range of powertrain options prioritized for fuel efficiency and power delivery, with enhanced sensitivity to the environment. On the Cutting Edge of Safety Lexus Safety System The ES offers Lexus Safety System +, which combines key innovative safety technologies into a single, networked package. Among them are the Pre-Collision System (PCS), which can detect vehicles and pedestrians, in some circumstances, by a combination of millimeter-wave radar and front-facing camera.
It dispatches a warning as Brake Assist (BA) and emergency braking are activated. The Lane Departure Alert (LDA) employs a camera to keep track of visible lane marking lines on the road. If the vehicle begins to unintentionally deviate from the lane, the LDA system will notify the driver with an audio-visual alert and vibration to the steering wheel. The Automatic High Beam (AHB) senses headlights from oncoming traffic and the taillight of the car in front, automatically adjusting hi-beam and low-beam illumination to help ensure optimal forward visibility during nighttime driving. The Radar Cruise Control uses millimeter-wave radar to detect the speed of the vehicle ahead in order to adjust the cruise control speed setting accordingly, helping to maintain a preset distance. This system also uses a combination of millimeter-wave radar and camera to detect a lane change by the vehicle in front for smooth acceleration and deceleration control. “With improved performance, an expanded engine lineup and a quieter and thoroughly luxurious interior wrapped in a freshened chiseled body, the new ES builds efficiently on what has made it one of the most popular luxury sedans in the world, and we are confident that this latest version of the ES will build upon its past successes,” said Asahi. The New RX 200t While the new RX 350 and RX 450h luxury utility vehicles made a dazzling debut earlier this month at the New York International Auto Show, the RX 200t made its first appearance at the Shanghai International Motor Show, alongside the much-anticipated ES. What sets the RX 200t apart from the vehicles introduced in North America is its turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 under the hood, designed for select global markets, including China. The output of the powertrain, which features VVTiW (Variable Valve Timing-intelligent Wide) and a low-inertia twin-scroll turbocharger with air-to-liquid intercooler, will be aimed at more than 228 hp (170 kW). The gear ratios of the 6-speed automatic transmissions provide excellent acceleration off the line and exceptional passing power. The turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 joins the other RX’s engine offerings. One is an upgraded and more powerful 3.5-liter V6, which aims to deliver 300 hp and comes mated to a new 8-speed automatic transmission, while the hybrid model features an Atkinson-cycle 3.5-liter V6 that produces around 300 hp when combined with the electric motor. These engines have been tuned for greater fuel efficiency and low carbon emissions.

5/7/15 5:26 PM
The RX features a new bold look to go along with its refined engines. The front of the vehicle is highlighted by a completely new fascia with an emboldened spindle grille and triple L-shape LED headlamps. A truly innovative styling cue is the blacked-out C-pillars, which provide a floating-roof effect never before seen on a Lexus product. The appearance of the rear has been sharpened and exudes a sense of rock-solid stability, as the new L-shaped taillights that wrap around the sides of the vehicle create a wider, more authoritative presence when illuminated. Inside, the new RX’s cabin is one of comfort and luxury, with repositioned trim pieces that exude a high level of class, and specially-finished laser-cut ornamentation available for those who desire an extra dose of opulence. Rear-seat occupants are treated to more leg and knee space, and a retractable power panorama roof provides occupants with a refreshing open-air experience. When it comes to delivering carlike handling, the RX has no peers. The entire chassis has been fortified to provide enhanced straight-line stability and control through turns. The RX’s fully independent suspension system has been tuned and reinforced for controlled handling while keeping ride quality remarkably smooth. WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM | 119 Lexus At Shanghai.indd 13
5/7/15 5:26 PM
For those who prefer more excitement and performance in their luxury sport-utility vehicles, the RX F SPORT will be available with all of the model’s engine offerings. The RX F SPORT will feature, among other things, exclusive alloy wheels, “F SPORT” badges, and an “F” mesh design on the spindle grille to visually differentiate it from the other versions, while modifications to the chassis enhance the vehicle’s already superb cornering performance. Lexus has always stressed safety technologies in all of its vehicles, so it should come as no surprise that the new RX is enhanced in the areas concerning the well-being of its occupants. Among these new changes is Lexus Safety System +, which is also available on ES. Adaptive High-beam System (AHS), a Panoramic View Monitor (PVM) and Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) are available as optional equipment.

The Ram Truck brand today unveiled a one-of-a-kind Texas Ranger concept truck to commemorate and promote the brand’s partnership with the renowned law-enforcement agency and the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum. Introduced by Ram Truck Brand President and CEO Bob Hegbloom at the 2015 Dallas Auto Show, the Ram Texas Ranger concept truck brings the legendary spirit of the Rangers to the road. “The Ram team developed this commemorative concept truck in order to further highlight our relationship with the Texas Rangers and the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum,” said Bob Hegbloom, President and CEO – Ram Truck, FCA US LLC. “Although Rangers are well-known horsemen, today Texans drive more pickups than drivers in any other state in the country.” Both inside and out, the Ram Texas Ranger edition celebrates the Rangers and the iconic silver Lone Star Ranger badge. Exterior The Ram Texas Ranger edition concept truck is identified by unique Texas Ranger badging designed to represent the Mexican five-peso coins from which Ranger badges are tooled.

5/7/15 5:28 PM
The coin was minted from 1947 through 1948 and was the basis for the first official Texas Ranger star badges. The coin was re-tooled to the star-and-wheel shape worn by today’s Rangers. Representative of those star-and-wheel badges, large five-pointed milled-aluminum emblems are mounted to front driver and passenger-side fenders. A third milled-aluminum Texas Ranger badge adorns the concept truck’s tailgate. Each of the four polished-aluminum 20-inch wheels also gets a milled-aluminum Texas Ranger center cap. The Texas Ranger edition is painted in a Bright White and Bright Silver Metallic two-tone color scheme that embodies the white hats and silver badges that the good guys always wear.

Interior Of course, the Ram Texas Ranger concept’s interior is loaded with Ranger design cues as well. Starting with the etched Canyon Brown and Tan leather and tooled-metal details that distinguish Ram’s luxurious Laramie Longhorn edition, Ram’s designers have loaded the concept truck with unique Texas Ranger edition accents. Among the most notable are four real Mexican five-peso silver coins inlaid within the wooden portions of the door bolsters. Front doors have the obverse or “heads” side and rear doors contain the reverse or “tails” side of the coin. 126 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM Dodge Ram Texas Ranger Concept.indd 6

Although the Ram Texas Ranger edition was designed as a one-of-a-kind concept that will tour Texas and help build awareness for the Texas Rangers Hall of Fame and Museum, officials have not ruled out a possible production run. No timing or pricing for a possible future Texas Ranger edition was announced. Texas Trucks More Texans drive pickup trucks than drivers in any other state; 20 percent of motor vehicle registrations versus 12 percent national average. In fact, Ram sells nearly two-and-a-half times as many pickup trucks in Texas as it does in the next-highest volume state. In 2002, Ram Truck was the first manufacturer to recognize the strength of the pickup truck market in Texas and to offer an exclusive edition for the state. The Ram Lone Star edition was the first pickup truck designed by Texans and built specifically for Texans. The Ram Lone Star edition is by far the brand’s best-selling model in Texas, accounting for nearly 40 percent of the half-ton mix. Since the Lone Star’s debut, Ram has sold more than 230,000 of the Texas-only models.

Ram introduced the Ram Laramie Longhorn edition to State Fair of Texas audiences in September 2010. It was the most luxurious truck ever produced by the company. The Laramie Longhorn is layered with southwestern design iconography. Inside and out, Laramie Longhorn is loaded with remarkable features and design cues from traditionally handcrafted, time-tested wares, such as the antique pocket watch, a fine pair of hand-tooled leather cowboy boots, a collector’s-grade shotgun or a horseman’s saddle. The Ram Laramie Longhorn’s metal work and leather work are second to none. Ram is the fastest-growing truck brand in Texas. Its share is up 2.52 points over the last five years, in no small part owing to its ability to deliver the hard-working trucks that Texans demand. Ram / Texas Rangers Partnership At the 2014 State Fair of Texas, Ram Truck announced a new partnership with the Texas Rangers, aiding the preservation of the history of the renowned law-enforcement organization.

Ram Truck Brand President and CEO Bob Hegbloom marked the event by presenting the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum with a check for $100,000. In partnership with the FCA Foundation, Ram’s support is helping to perpetuate and promote the heritage of the Texas Rangers via the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum in Waco. The Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum is the official historical center of the Rangers and is preparing for the Texas Ranger Bicentennial in 2023. The Texas Rangers, America’s oldest state law enforcement agency, are gearing up for their landmark 200th anniversary. Today’s elite Rangers trace their founding to 1823. The first Rangers were minutemen and scouts protecting farms, ranches and settlements on a hostile frontier. Remarkably, Rangers have upheld the law over the span of three centuries; they are the only American lawmen to have served under five flags: Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the United States, Confederate Texas and the U.S. again. 130 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM Dodge Ram Texas Ranger Concept.indd 10
5/7/15 5:28 PM
The Texas Ranger is one of the most cherished symbols of the Lone Star State, a positive and enduring icon of Texas and America. Many families take immense pride in having a relative who was, or is, a Texas Ranger. Past and present ranks include Texans of Hispanic, Anglo-European, African, American Indian and Asian ancestry. Â The Texas Ranger Division is a major division within the Texas Department of Public Safety, with lead criminal investigative responsibility for the following: major incident crime investigations, unsolved crime/serial crime investigations, public corruption investigations, officer involved shooting investigations and border security operations. Â The Texas Ranger Division is comprised of 213 full-time employees, including 150 commissioned Rangers and 63 support personnel, as well as administrative staff, Border Security Operations Center, Joint Operations and Intelligence Centers and the Special Weapons and Tactics team. About the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum The museum was established as the official historical center of the Texas Rangers in 1964. Since its founding, the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame has grown to include a museum, Texas Ranger company headquarters, State Hall of Fame, library and archives, an educational center serving nonprofits and a banquet facility.

Today, the site has more galleries and the land holds buildings for a variety of services: more galleries, more research, more education and community involvement among them. An educational center not only hosts student groups (students in fourth and seventh grades in the state study Texas history), but is a place to help community organizations with training or conferences. Efforts are underway to renovate and expand the exhibits and educational facilities of the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame in Waco. The goal is to leave a Bicentennial legacy by supporting efforts of the museum to further preserve the Texas Ranger heritage for future generations. In preparation for the 200th anniversary of the Texas Rangers, the Texas Public Safety Commission has appointed the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum as their representative and steward for the Texas Ranger Bicentennial. 132 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM Dodge Ram Texas Ranger Concept.indd 12

The revolution enters the next round – the all-new smart fortwo has undergone improvements in virtually all areas and is markedly more comfortable. Drive power is supplied by a state-of-the-art three-cylinder engine rated at 89 hp, while power transmission is performed by a five-speed manual transmission or the twinamic automatic dual clutch transmission. A host of innovative details guarantee even more fun in the city. The new smart generation was launched in Europe in November 2014 and is making its U.S. debut at the 2015 New York International Auto Show before arriving in dealerships in September. “As Europe’s youngest car brand, smart enjoys global success today. No-one combines functionality and emotionality as well as we do, as the inventors of individual urban mobility. The new smart fortwo adopts the proven concept while offering more of just about everything – more space, more color, more equipment … and even more fun in the city! Only the vehicle length remains as unique as ever, at 2.69 meters (8.8 feet),” says smart boss Annette Winkler. “Our idea based on a total rethink of urban mobility has won through.” “In the planning phase we were clear that we wanted to retain the rear engine for the new smart, so as to continue to exploit the vehicles’ strengths to the full in the city,” explains Jörg Prigl, head of the product group Compact Cars at Mercedes-Benz. “On this basis, we then developed the new fortwo and forfour together with our partner, Renault.”
138 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM 2016 Smart ForTwo.indd 4
5/7/15 5:30 PM
“We are proud that we have been able to make the fortwo with the same length of 2.69 meters (8.8 feet) even safer and altogether more grown up,” Markus Riedel, Head of Development at smart, adds. “We even succeeded in reducing the turning circle to 6.95 meters (22.8 feet), setting a new best.” Figures for vehicles with manual transmission, but a double-clutch auto transmission will also be offered in the U.S. Unmistakeably smart – the design The brand appeals to the heart and mind in equal portion. An expressive design idiom and coloring embody pure joie de vivre. The compact proportions and clever details attest to unique functionality. The new smart fortwo is instantly recognizable as a member of the smart family with many distinctive design features including the trademark smart headlamps and front grille and the iconic tridion safety cell. In addition, its intelligent rear engine setup helps ensure the smart fortwo is particularly agile in urban traffic. “smart stands for FUN.ctional design, as the brand is defined by two poles – the heart and mind. WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM | 139 2016 Smart ForTwo.indd 5
5/7/15 5:30 PM
The design idiom is clear and purist and therefore very progressive. The typical smart attributes are being carried into a new era: the typical silhouette with the ultra-short overhangs, the clear lines, forms and surfaces, the tridion cell and the updated, likeable smart face,” says Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Daimler AG. “It is never easy to design the successor to a design icon – but it is all the more exciting.” Extreme agility and optimum use of space more fun in the city Short overhangs, minimal length, and high steering angle: The new smart fortwo has everything it takes to manoeuvre elegantly into any parking space - and around every corner, too. When it comes to the turning circle, the new smart fortwo sets a new benchmark: at 22.8 ft (from curb to curb) and 24 ft (from wall to wall) it makes turning manoeuvres extremely simple. This new model also leads the way once again with regard to the maximum of space packed into minimal dimensions, as documented by the excellent body space index. Additional highlights include the folding front passenger seat backrest for maximum versatility. 140 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM 2016 Smart ForTwo.indd 6
5/7/15 5:30 PM
Real Life Safety safety features The essential safety concept embodied so successfully by the preceding models has been retained. Like a nut, the soft interior is protected from harm by a rigid shell: the tridion cell. A high proportion of ultra-high strength hot-formed steels and maximum-strength multiphase steel is now used on the new smart. In keeping with the Mercedes-Benz “Real Life Safety” philosophy, the focus in car-to-car crash tests was on compatibility with substantially larger and heavier vehicles. The new smart vehicles performed well in frontal collisions with the S- and C-Class. Advanced assistance systems which were previously reserved for higher classes of vehicle further enhance safety and comfort. These include Crosswind Assist (standard) and forward collision warning (optional). A new front axle design adopting elements of the previous Mercedes-Benz C‑Class, an optimized De Dion rear axle, substantially increased spring travel all round, tires with higher side walls and an unprecedentedly small turning circle are the highlights of the new chassis. The chassis and suspension of the new smart generation have been evolved on the basis of the experience acquired with previous smart models and designed for markedly enhanced ride comfort.

5/7/15 5:30 PM
New three-cylinder engine, dual clutch transmission the drive system A state-of-the-art turbocharged three-cylinder engine will be standard on the new smart fortwo at the market launch: The turbo engine is rated at 89 hp. The 898 cc engine mobilizes maximum torque of 100 lb-ft at 2500 rpm. The totally new turbocharger features an electronically controlled wastegate which enables increased engine dynamics in conjunction with a sustainable reduction in fuel consumption. Apart from the turbocharger, a whole range of other technical measures also contributes to the engine’s excellent fuel efficiency and performance. These include variable swirl control and variable adjustment of the inlet valves. Another defining trait of the all-aluminium three-cylinder engine is the square bore/stroke ratio. Both transmission variants are also new for smart: customers can choose between a five-speed manual transmission and the twinamic six-speed dual clutch transmission. Passion, prime and proxy the new lines

5/7/15 5:30 PM
Three equipment lines (passion, prime and proxy) and a wealth of optional items, some of which were previously the reserve of higher segments, make every smart fortwo a unique gem in its own right. Even in the entry-level pure version, a comprehensive scope of safety and comfort features are offered. These include LED daytime driving lights, central locking with radio remote control, cruise control, multifunction steering wheel, smart radio with CD-Player, Bluetooth (handsfree/audio streaming), power steering, exterior temperature indicator with frost warning, instrument cluster with 3.5 in color display and trip computer, and power windows. Passion, prime and proxy are the names of the three lines which serve to upgrade the “pure” smart fortwo and provide for differentiation particularly in the interior. Their features include a leather multifunction steering wheel, power and heated mirrors, height adjustable driver seat, armrest, and retractable cargo cover. In addition, to tie in with the market launch of the new smart generation, the edition #1 package will be available for model year 2016. This offers exclusive design features such as a tridion safety cell in lava orange combined with bodypanels/body in white. WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM | 143 2016 Smart ForTwo.indd 9
5/7/15 5:30 PM
The multimedia systems meet the highest standards, with comprehensive smartphone integration, real-time navigation and intuitive operation with touchscreen. For the first time, smart is offering the JBL sound system, which produces an impressively full sound. It incorporates a 6-channel DSP amplifier (240 W) in the fortwo, with a total of eight high-performance loudspeakers providing outstanding listening pleasure. Smart cross connect is a revolutionary new app which is available to customers free of charge from smart for the smart fortwo. smart cross connect offers even more features while on the move and outside of the vehicle. smart parking is among the features which now offer a more user-friendly design and incorporate new functions. FUN.ctional – the exterior design Extremely short overhangs at front and rear – the new smart generation also possesses these typical proportions. And thanks to the 100 mm (3.9 inches) wider track, the wheels are positioned further outwards. These characteristic proportions offer outstanding visibility and agility and, together with the rear engine, enable a passenger cell accommodating an unrivalled amount of space in such compact dimensions. The color contrast between tridion cell and body panels is another characteristic feature of the smart brand.
144 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM 2016 Smart ForTwo.indd 10
5/7/15 5:30 PM
The smart designers refer to the evolutionary development of the silhouette as the “one-and-a-half box” design. A change to the previous one-box proportions became necessary for two reasons: the higher hood lends the smart a more grown-up and sportier character and offers greater pedestrian protection. The smart fortwo features a friendly but self-assured face. A decisive feature of this friendly face is the signature smart grille, which is now slightly larger. The grill’s perforated structure results from a honeycomb pattern. The honeycomb is paler towards the outside - the designers refer to this as fading. The radiator trim is available in a variety of colors to match the tridion, including black, cool silver and white. The second, black cooling air opening in the bumper also features the honeycomb pattern. The markedly larger updated smart logo in the middle of the grille also demonstrates self-confidence. It is now three-dimensional and almost spherical in shape, harmonizing with the smart’s distinctly more sensuous lines. The logo features a matte finish rather than a high-gloss look, similarly to all the sparingly applied chrome accents.
WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM | 145 2016 Smart ForTwo.indd 11
5/7/15 5:30 PM
The rhombic front lamps are truncated slightly at the top, producing an attractive sporty look. The U-shaped daytime driving lights (optional Lighting Package) add a characteristic design feature. A loving attention to detail is demonstrated, for example, by the way in which the honeycomb pattern is cited in the headlamp covers. On the indicators, the honeycomb pattern even performs the function of dispersing the light. The hood also highlights the new sculptural lines, describing a powerful and sporty downward sweep between the headlamps. The new smart fortwo is clearly recognizable as a member of the new smart family. It has a large door extending into the B-pillar with a frameless window. The typical smart genes are thus apparent from afar on the road: the striking door contours and the unique tridion cell. A characteristic swage line, such as features in the middle of the doors, underscores the brand image. This is followed by the fuel filler cap on the right and the air inlet for the rear engine under the B‑pillar on the left. As previously, the door is lined with a panel in high-quality lightweight plastic. This allows the king of the car park to shrug off any knocks and bumps from other road users.
146 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM 2016 Smart ForTwo.indd 12
5/7/15 5:30 PM
A new feature on the smart fortwo is the pronounced shoulder line. This provides a firm look on the road and establishes a visual separation between the vehicle body and greenhouse. The twin-section tailgate is close to smart drivers’ hearts. The new smart fortwo thus boasts this special feature once again, enabling the vehicle to be loaded even in the tightest parking spaces. The rhombic tail lights framed by the tridion cell are reminiscent of the first smart generation and combine with the large track width to emphasize the width at the rear. A unique LED scenario is optionally available in conjunction with the Lighting package: eleven individually illuminated cubes are allocated to each tail light, providing for a striking night design. The typical honeycomb pattern features once again in the clear glass over the indicators and reversing lights in the middle of the lamps. Easy-going and charming the interior design “Loop” is the designers’ name for the emotional sweep that features as a theme in the interior, embellishing the dashboard and doors. The sculptural dashboard itself consists of two sections - a bold and sensuous outer section which can optionally be covered with fabric, and a large, concave inner section incorporating the functional elements. In front of the dashboard, the instrument cluster and the infotainment center with radio/navigation appear to hover in front of the dashboard. WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM | 147 2016 Smart ForTwo.indd 13
5/7/15 5:30 PM
The dashboard and the door center panels feature extensive fabric coverings in the three lines. This high-quality textile surface is very pleasant to the touch and is reminiscent of the mesh inserts in modern sports shoes. The mesh structure is a USP in this vehicle segment. The color and material concept underscores the easy-going and charming character of the new smart generation, with the equipment lines standing for a distinctive and individual appearance. The sporty front seats with bold contours are designed as integral seats. The instrument cluster and its semi-circular segmentation for speed and warning indicators cites the previous smart models, but in a new look. The striking spherical air vents are simple and fun to use. The centrally positioned air conditioning control unit also features an distinctive appearance: the desired temperature can be set on a scale in the middle with the aid of a sliding magnifying glass. The three-spoke multifunction steering wheel can be used to control the radio or navigation unit positioned in the center of the dashboard. The infotainment center in modern consumer electronics style appears to hover in front of the dashboard. The interior thus reflects the values of a young, active and networked generation. 146 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM 2016 Smart ForTwo.indd 14
5/7/15 5:30 PM
The doors take up the “loop” of the dashboard with their ellipsoidal sweep. The large armrest provides for comfort. The honeycomb pattern from the exterior is cited on the integrated loudspeaker and the tweeter in the mirror triangle. Smallest turning circle of any car – the concept Short overhangs, minimal length, high steering angle. The new smart fortwo has everything it takes to manoeuvre elegantly into any parking space - and around every corner, too. When it comes to the turning circle, the new smart fortwo sets a new benchmark: at 22.8 ft (from curb to curb) and 24 ft (from wall to wall) it makes turning manoeuvres extremely simple. The smart fortwo makes exceptional use of the available space. The smart engineers have developed the body space index (BSI) to describe how efficiently space is used. It describes the ratio of interior to exterior length, whereby the interior length is measured from the accelerator pedal in unused position along a horizontal line to the rear end, as a simple means of comparison between different vehicles. At 75%, the new smart fortwo attains top ratings for this criterion.
WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM | 147 2016 Smart ForTwo.indd 15
5/7/15 5:30 PM
Markedly more comfortable the chassis The new smart fortwo has essentially been configured for gently understeering handling characteristics. The different tire sizes at front and rear have thus been retained, whereby the narrower front tires in conjunction with a high outside wheel turn angle contribute to the unprecedentedly small turning circle. ABS, ASR and ESP速 are ready to intervene at the critical limits of road-holding. A hill hold function and brake assist are integrated in the brake system. The engineers have designed a new McPherson suspension with a triple-path head bearing for the front axle. Each wheel is controlled by a wishbone under the wheel center, the McPherson strut and a tie rod. Comfort and guide bearings for the wishbones provide for added comfort, along with the markedly increased overall spring travel. During the compression phase in particular, the new smart runs markedly more smoothly over uneven surfaces than previously. The new smart fortwo also features a sophisticated De-Dion rear axle, which has been modified for substantially greater comfort. New elements are the twin-tube shock absorbers and separate barrel-shaped helical springs. Two elastomer shims provide for effective noise decoupling of the helical springs between body and rear axle.
146 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM 2016 Smart ForTwo.indd 16
5/7/15 5:30 PM
The sports suspension is available as part of the optional Sport Package to those seeking sportier handling from their smart. The springs are firmer here and the vehicle is ten millimeters lower. The standard Direct-Steer system with variable ratio and electric power assistance provides for considerably enhanced driving enjoyment, even better handling and increased efficiency. Crosswind Assist as standard – active safety Advanced assistance systems which were previously the reserve of higher classes of vehicle further enhance safety and comfort. These include crosswind assist (standard) and forward collision warning (optional). Every car driver will be familiar with risky situations when surprised by strong gusts of wind while overtaking trucks or on bridges. Standard-fit crosswind assist is able to defuse such dangerous situations by carrying out specific braking intervention when the vehicle threatens to drift off track. As a result, less countersteering effort is required of the driver. Crosswind assist is active from 50 mph when driving straight ahead and in gentle bends. A brief lapse in concentration is all it takes for the driver to edge too close to the vehicle ahead – this is one of the main causes of serious traffic accidents. The forward collision warning (optional) helps to defuse such dangerous situations. For example, it can prevent rear-end collisions when the driver approaches the end of a traffic jam. The system can also prompt the driver to take action in dangerous traffic situations in the city, thereby helping to avoid accidents. The distance to the vehicle ahead and the closing speed are monitored continuously by mid-range radar. The driver is warned in two stages: when a vehicle ahead is detected, a warning lamp lights up in the instrument cluster if the distance is not within the safe range (stage 1). If the closeness to the vehicle ahead becomes critical, giving rise to a danger of collision, a warning tone additionally sounds (stage 2). The driver is thus urged to take action in the form of emergency braking or a specific evasive maneuver to avoid a rear-end collision. The combined visual and audible warning is initiated in case of moving or stationary vehicles in the speed range from 5mph to top speed. Stationary vehicles are detected when the driver is travelling at a speed from 5 to 56mph. Comprehensive occupant protection passive safety The bodyshell of the new smart fortwo and the tridion safety cell have undergone further development to adapt them to even more stringent safety requirements. A high proportion of ultra-high strength hot-formed steels and maximum-strength multiphase steel is now used. These are used in the sidewall and in particular in the substructure. In order to assure the structures of a high level of deformation and energy absorption capacity in frontal collisions, the new smart generation has been provided with the largest possible crumple zones and attention has been devoted to ensuring an effective flow of the accruing forces. In a severe frontal collision, the rear structure also helps to absorb the energy acting on the vehicle. The forces are channelled into the extremely robust passenger cell, which is designed as a safety cage. Particularly extensive work went into adapting the new front axle carrier to crash requirements. The highly robust tridion passenger cell is able to prevent major deformation even in very severe collisions, thus helping to protect the occupants’ space. The fuel tank is located safely outside the deformation zone in front of the rear axle. 148 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM 2016 Smart ForTwo.indd 18

The Mercedes-Benz safety engineers were involved in the cooperation project with Renault throughout all phases of the development process and were able to contribute their amassed know-how. For example, this was particulairly helpful in the area of computer simulation, where it was possible to calculate in detail the behaviour of individual weld spots or the newly introduced bonding methods, such as MIG soldering. The number of assessed collision cases far exceeded the mandatory scope, both in the simulations and in real crash testing. The new smart fortwo underwent the same development program as the new Mercedes-Benz C Class, for example. As it was designed for the global market, the number of crash tests was four times that required for vehicles designed primarily for the European market. In keeping with the Mercedes-Benz “Real Life Safety philosophy, the focus in car-to-car tests was on compatibility with substantially larger and heavier vehicles. The new smart fortwo was required to demonstrate its capabilities in frontal collisions with the S- and C-Class. The way in which all components (body, seat belts, airbags and sensor system) interact is crucial to effective protection. The forward displacement space for the occupants is to be sufficient to provide them with an adequate deceleration distance to minimize accident-induced physical stress in the event of a collision. Driver and front passenger are each provided with a 3-point seat belt with belt force limiter and pyrotechnic belt tensioner as standard. The TopTether attachment is standard on the passenger seat of the fortwo, providing a simple means of attaching child seats rigidly to the vehicle. The child seats themselves come from the Mercedes-Benz range. The headrests for driver and front passenger are integrated in the backrests. They reduce the risk of injuries to the cervical vertebrae in a rear-end collision. The smart fortwo comes with 8 airbags as standard. The kneebag has a positive influence on occupant kinematics in a frontal collision, thus offering the driver additional protection in many frontal collision scenarios. The standard-fit sidebags (head-thorax bags) are accommodated in the driver and front passenger seat backrests and provide side cover for the respective occupants’ head and chest. The sidebags incorporate two chambers to enable due adaptation to different sizes of head / upper body. WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM | 149 2016 Smart ForTwo.indd 19

When inflated in side-on collisions they are able to lower the degree of stress to which the chest area is exposed and reduce the risk of the head colliding directly with the side window or other objects likely to cause injuries, such as a pylon, a tree or parts of a colliding vehicle. The occupants’ pelvic areas are additionally protected by deformation elements installed at appropriate points in the door panels. Three equipment lines: passion, prime and proxy passion, prime and proxy are the names of the three lines which upgrade the smart fortwo “pure” and provide for visual differentiation. The most important features at a glance: The passion line is very stylish and modern with a choice of color combinations in black/orange, black/white, or black/grey for the interior. The multifunction steering wheel in leather, power and heated mirrors, and a retractable cargo cover combine a high-quality ambience with functionality. Practical equipment combinations: the packages Smart has combined various features in two practical packages: Building on the lines, the Sport package underscores the car’s dynamism on both a technical and visual level. Lowering the vehicle by 10 millimeters lowers the center of gravity for even better roadholding. The Sport package is a standard feature of the proxy line (without the sport wheels) and is available as an option for passion and prime. The Lighting package comprises headlamps with daytime driving lights featuring LED fiber optic technology and LED tail lamps. It comes standard in conjunction with prime and proxy. Further upgrade options: optional equipment In addition to the equipment lines and the packages, numerous individual optional equipment features are available for the new smart generation. A highlight is the JBL Soundsystem, which produces an impressively full sound. The JBL Soundsystem incorporates a 6-channel DSP amplifier (240 watt) and a total of eight high-performance loudspeakers provide for outstanding listening pleasure: one broadband center loudspeaker, two tweeters in the mirror triangle, two lower mid-range speakers in the doors (on the forfour additionally in the rear doors), two broadband rear-fill loudspeakers and a removable woofer on the left-hand side of the luggage compartment. Production – Hambach plant remains a role model Highly efficient assembly and logistics operations and suppliers based directly on site at the plant as system partners: since it was opened in October 1997 the smart plant in Hambach, Lorraine, has stood for the success story of an innovative, particularly lean production concept which continues to set new standards in its area of the automobile industry. With investments in the order of 200 million euros for production of the new generation of the two-seater, the plant has brought its original production concept into line with the state of the art while further increasing the flexibility of production operations. The innovative, lean production concept at 'smartville' is based on smart assuming overarching control of the plant and responsibility for the end product, while at the same time drawing on the expertise of specialized suppliers and service companies for numerous areas of production. The success story an idea wins through 1998 saw the launch of an excitingly different car the smart city coupé, which has since long become known as the smart fortwo. Measuring little more than two and a half metres in length, the uncompromising two-seater fitted crossways into parking spaces and established a new class of its own. Idea and brand successfully established worldwide. With its uniquely short design, the smart is simply unbeatable for city driving - much to the delight of smart drivers in ever more cities all over the world. Following the smart fortwo’s initial launch in Germany and eight other European countries, it is now available in 46 countries across the globe. It has always been part of the smart concept to offer customers numerous additional services in the area of individual mobility. Back in an early phase of the brand’s history, for example, the smartmove programme enabled drivers to rent a larger car on favourable terms, to reserve special parking spaces and to avail themselves of a car sharing programme – services which have since undergone further development and which remain closely linked to smart today as “smart add-on” or “car2go”. Smart is also a pioneer of the local emission-free electric drive: 2012 saw the launch of the third-generation smart fortwo electric drive. With its 74 hp electric motor the smart fortwo electric drive accelerates from 0 - 60 mph in tbd seconds, and with a maximum speed of 96 mph driving pleasure is also guaranteed on urban motorways. 152 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM 2016 Smart ForTwo.indd 22

The 17.6 kWh battery enables the urban two-seater to travel up to 60 miles in city traffic without producing any local emissions. The sale&care model makes opting into electric mobility particularly attractive, it offers customers an opportunity to buy, finance or lease the vehicle at an attractive price and to rent the battery for a monthly fee. 2012 also witnessed the introduction of the first smart with just two wheels: the smart ebike features an unconventional design in line with the style of the brand, functions appropriate for city use and high technology standards which are reflected by an extremely efficient high-performance drive package among other merits. Total sales for the smart fortwo well in excess of 1.5 million show how successfully smart has turned the idea for this unique city car into reality. Annual sales also remained stable around the 100,000 mark in the final years of the model lifecycle. In 2013 the smart electric drive was the market leader in Germany and ranked 3rd in Europe and 5th worldwide in the registration statistics for electric cars. At the beginning of 2014 the smart fortwo won the title of “Microcar of the Year for the fifth time in succession in China. Today, five years after the market launch, China is the third most successful market for smart, after Germany and Italy.
