Welcome to the Summer Season at VISUAL
Our Summer season is all about our relationship to the land, and how it sustains us. Alongside exhibitions that explore farming and our connections to the land, we’ve been planting seed potatoes with An Gairdín Beo and Carlow Integration Forum, ready to harvest, cook and share this July. We’ll also be dipping into our rivers for artistic inspiration, and exploring the relationship of bees to our urban environment. We’ll have special events celebrating the Carlow Arts Festival, Cruinniú na nÓg and Heritage Week, plus lots of free and fun events for families and children. Join us in a feast for the senses this Summer!

Katie Watchorn BalehomeBalehome BalehomeBalehome presents a collection of new and pre-existing works by Katie Watchorn relating to farmyard and milking parlour systems, in particular the sunken pit of the traditional herringbone milking parlour structure, still used today. Stemming in part from her grandmother’s cattle records which document the physical attributes and life events of each cow in the herd, Watchorn creates a sculptural narrative depicting a full generation of dairy production. What results is an intimate family history, which folds and evolves with the cyclical nature of the farm and rural living. Her family’s particular lilting cattle call – Balehome – is bellowed out over the landscape to call in the herd for morning and evening milking. As part of BalehomeBalehome, Watchorn has created a limited-edition publication in collaboration with artist and designer Marian Balfe, which includes a short story by artist Laura Fitzgerald and is available from VISUAL’s bookshop. Raised on a dairy farm in rural Co. Carlow, Katie Watchorn received a BA (Hons) in Fine Art Painting from the National College of Art and Design in 2014. Drawing on her upbringing, Katie’s practice primarily deals with illuminating the nuances and materiality of Irish rural farming. She has received the Overall Winner in the Visual Arts Category of the 2014 Irish Undergraduate Awards, the Hotron Recent Graduate Award 2016, Wexford Arts Centre EVA Award 2016/2017 and is supported by the Arts Council Next Generation Bursary for the production of new work 2017/2018.

Deirdre O’Mahony The Persistent Return The Persistent Return is a large scale, two-screen installation that reflects upon the history of the potato and the role it played in consolidating and concentrating power in Europe in the seventeenth and eighteenth century. The potato brought with it a possibility of freedom from recurring cycles of famine, but also a precarious dependency on monoculture. The film points to the human cost of privileging scientific rationalism and reminds us that the skills of both head and hand are needed in order to actively respond to the challenges facing humanity today. Bio Deirdre O’Mahony’s research and art practice is grounded in collaborative engagements with different rural publics and contexts. She developed her PhD research around “X-PO”, a defunct rural post-office re-imagined as a social and cultural public exchange space More recently her SPUD project has focused on tacit, place-based knowledge and its relevance to food production today. Mary Coughlan Known to be one of Ireland’s greatest female singers, Mary Coughlan has drawn from her inspiration and idols: Billie Holiday’s teary outpourings of heartbreak, the sultry amours of Peggy Lee, Van Morrison’s soulful cries, and the bold offerings of Edith Piaf. The secret to Mary’s soulful performances lies in her unique delivery. Mary makes us think what it is men make of women and what women must do to make do, reciting the story of every song effortlessly, with passion and emotion in every note.

Looking Deadly A wedding is the craic, birthdays are grand but you can’t beat a good Irish funeral. Yeah, it’s sad… but ya know what’ll help with that? Kind words, hang sangwiches, a glass of warm porter, milky tea, a bad ballad, a snog with that cousin you know you shouldn’t fancy and a fight over who thought more of the dearly departed. Now you’re ready for the three-day wake! Having sold out around Ireland, Foystown’s two rival funeral directors are back with the rollercoaster that is the battle for the funeral of local legend, Big Tom McCarthy. Looking Deadly will make you laugh and cry, just like any decent funeral should and Big Tom will rest in peace... eventually. “Laugh out loud moments… It’s a real treat” – Alan in Belfast blog “An hour in their company is not quite enough” – The Big List “McGrath and Singleton’s performances are superb… captures the essence of Irish culture and community” – Meg.ie “Thoughtful and effective” – The Reviews Hub “A highly entertaining romp with quick-fire gags” – Irish Independent

Fishamble: The New Play Company presents
Before
Written & Performed by Pat Kinevane. Before is a new play with much music, set in Clery’s of Dublin, on the very day this iconic department store shuts - for good. Pontius is inside, trying to choose a gift for his estranged daughter, whom he hasn’t seen for almost 20 years. He will meet her in an hour. This father’s journey is both beautiful and strange, from the isolation of his Midlands home, to the madness of O’Connell Street. Some folk are impossible to buy for…
