Dennis McNulty TTOPOLOGY TTOPOLOGY, an exhibition of new and retrospective works by Dennis McNulty considers the technologies and systems that have been developed, cast aside, or revised in order to advance our human potential. Coupling technology and art, McNulty explores the fields of science, engineering, built environment, retro technologies and future possibilities. TTOPOLOGY at VISUAL includes collaborations with musician David Donohoe and artist Bea McMahon. Dennis McNulty’s work is informed by his background in electronic music, his training as a structural engineer and his studies in psychoacoustics (sound perception). He works with a diverse range of media such as building materials, sound, video and media systems which often employ custom built hardware and software. McNulty is artist in residence at CONNECT, Ireland’s Research Centre for Future Networks and Communications, where he is an active member of the Orthogonal Methods Group. This exhibition is a co-production with Grazer Kunstverein, Austria, involving site responsive iterations at each venue. TTOPOLOGY at VISUAL has been kindly supported by Thermo Air, Carlow by way of a production workshop.

VISUAL ART
F Digital Gallery 3rd February – 27th May
Alan Butler The Need to Argue in the Master’s Language The Need to Argue in The Masters Language is a one-person exhibition based on Butler’s on-going series of video-game photography, Down and Out in Los Santos. Since 2015, the artist has been taking photographs that document the lifestyles and environments of the homeless population of Los Santos, the fictional city in the video game Grand Theft Auto V. To date, these works have been exhibited in exhibitions, publications and photography festivals around the globe in photographic form. For this exhibition, Butler explores the subject through less photographic means for the first time using sculpture, print, video and installation to delve into the relationship between technology and representation. Alan Butler’s work often investigates the inner-workings of the internet, the implications of new media technology, and the politics of appropriation. He received his MFA from LaSalle College of the Arts, Singapore (2009) and BA in Fine Art from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin (2004) where he now lectures in Fine Art Media.

Damien O’Reilly B Movie Posters
Before the advent of what would become known as New Horror, the B Movie was a staple of the cinema-going experience. A big budget movie would often doublebill with a smaller, less mainstream film. Without the limits of trying to appeal to a large market or paying attention to a demographic, the B movie was a thing of unbounded creativity and uncensored ingenuity. B Movies is an ongoing series of illustrations inspired by the low budget Sci-fi and Horror movies of Golden Age Hollywood. They have been created using pen and marker. The movies depicted don’t actually exist, they are a shadow celebrating a bygone era.

VISUAL Taster Sessions Learn a new skill or revisit your talent in the relaxed gallery atmosphere in VISUAL, led by artist Bridget Flannery. I Wish I Could Paint: 4 week course starting Friday 2nd March I Wish I Could Draw: 4 week course starting Friday 13th April Painting and drawing are not skills dependent on having talent. Both can be learned with practice. Bridget Flannery will provide you with the drawing and painting skills and tools to gain confidence and enjoy your new hobby – no matter what your current skill level. Bridget Flannery can be described as a painter of nature. Her paintings have an organic relation with certain specific areas and places – bogs, strands, cliff faces and rock formations. However, she makes no attempt to reproduce the surface appearance of places. Her forms are closely akin to natural forms and shapes, but while their genesis may be in the natural world, they are largely autonomous and follow an internal logic of form and colour brought about by detailed looking, drawing and photography.

Whatever the Weather A show about courage, trying new things and stepping outside... whatever the weather! A drop of sunshine, a sprinkle of rain, a dollop of snow and a whoosh of wind. Whatever the Weather it can be fun to go outside! But that’s not what Worried Wendy thinks, she hides away inside, afraid of what the weather may bring. As each day brings a new weather the children experience a range of sensory activities, touching warm sunshine heat cushions, dancing with whirling wind sticks and catching their reflections in the puddles. Together the children show Wendy there’s nothing to fear... Whatever the Weather they can go out to play! This is a new work from Little Bigtop, combining moments of theatrical magic with playful participation. Co-created and performed by Joanna Williams and Joanna Parkes. Educating Rita Willy Russell Highly regarded local theatre group Carlow Little Theatre Society return to the George Bernard Shaw Theatre in March 2018 with Willy Russel’s painfully funny and passionately serious play Educating Rita. Educating Rita is a witty, yet poignant look at a working class woman’s attempts to change her social circumstances through pursuit of an Open University qualification.
Untitled-1 1
The play centres on Frank who is a tutor of English in his fifties whose disillusioned outlook on life drives him to drink and bury himself in his books. Enter Rita, a forthright twenty-something hairdresser who is eager to learn. After weeks of cajoling, Rita slowly wins over the very hesitant Frank with her innate insight and refusal to accept no for an answer. Their relationship as teacher and student blossoms, ultimately giving Frank a new sense of self and Rita the knowledge she so craves. The play became a hit film with Michael Caine and Julie Walters in 1983.
