Welcome to our Spring season at VISUAL

I am delighted to share details of this season’s exciting programme at VISUAL. In our visual art programme we will be focusing on the life and legacy of Stephen McKenna, with a major retrospective of his work spanning 60 years of practice. Alongside this we host a group exhibition, Legacy, which will explore the influence of McKenna on other artists including Adam Bohanna, Eithne Jordan, Stephen Loughman, William McKeown, Isabel Nolan and Mairead O’hEocha. We will also have a solo exhibition by Ailbhe Ní Bhriain and a group exhibition with the Carlow based 9 Stones Artists. Our theatre season kicks off with some of Irelands best known musical talent including The Fureys, Jack L and Carlow’s very own Derek Ryan. Local dance artist and resident Emma Martin brings her acclaimed opera, Orfeo ed Euridice to VISUAL on Valentine’s weekend. And as the summer season fast approaches we will have some of Irelands funniest follies take to the stage including Neil Delamere, Rory Stories and Dirtbirds Live. Later this year VISUAL will celebrate its 10th anniversary. We will announce details about this very soon! A Painter’s Life: Stephen McKenna (1939–2017) Works from 1958–2015 VISUAL are delighted to present an important exhibition of works celebrating the life and legacy of artist Stephen McKenna PPRHA. In 2016 the artist was invited by VISUAL to create a retrospective for galleries. Offering an incredible view of this artists career, the selected works and exhibition hang were decided on by McKenna shortly before his passing in 2017. Alongside this retrospective, the artist’s legacies will be acknowledged through a group show of works by six artists who found influence in McKenna’s techniques, processes and friendship. Isabel Nolan, Stephen Loughman, Mairead O’hEocha, Eithne Jordan, Adam Bohanna and William McKeown (1968–2011).

About the Artist: Stephen McKenna was a British-born visual artist known for his postmodern figurative paintings. His works can be seen in the collections of the Tate Galleries, the British Council, the Imperial War Museum, London, and has been shown at various galleries including the Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin and the Irish Museum of Modern Art. He was a member and president (2005–2009) of the Royal Hibernian Academy. He is represented by Kerlin Gallery Dublin. Kindly supported by The McKenna Estate and Kerlin Gallery, Dublin. A selection of works from this exhibition will tour to The F.E. McWilliam Gallery, Banbridge in 2020. January – April 2019

A Painter’s Life: Legacies Isabel Nolan, Stephen Loughman, Mairead O’hEocha, Eithne Jordan, Adam Bohanna and William McKeown (1968–2011). Gathering memories and artistic works by a number of artists who would have found inspiration in Stephen McKenna’s, techniques, processes and friendship, Legacy celebrates the depths of this artist’s influence. In admiration and friendship, this group show pays tribute to Stephen McKenna’s continued presence in the work of others.

The Barrow Book Stephen McKenna A collection of original watercolours by Stephen McKenna illustrating the Barrow river landscape, set alongside selected quotes from poets and writers about river life. This beautiful gathering of words and imagery was curated in 2004 by artist Adam Bohanna as an artist’s book project. Published as part of Visualise Carlow, a series of temporary public art projects commissioned as an advance programme to VISUALs opening in 2009. The work was commissioned by the Carlow Local Authorities and kindly supported by the Arts Council of Ireland.

Commissioned by Miranda O’Driscoll, Sirus Arts Centre and supported by Arts Council Open Call Award.

Inscriptions (One Here Now) Ailbhe Ní Bhriain A film installation by Ailbhe Ní Bhriain with sound by Susan Stenger. This film takes the location of a working limestone quarry and, through a combination of slow motion drone footage and computer generated imagery, transforms it into a site of dreamlike theatricality. Shot in a blue limestone quarry at Old Leighlin Co. Carlow, the film is built around a series of extended shots, tracking the walls of exposed rock within the quarry. Integral to the work is Susan Stenger’s layered soundtrack, which was developed from a study of the patterns of Morse code and the traditional tunes and phrases of Irish keening.

About the Artist Ailbhe NI Bhriain is an Irish artist working with film and photography. Recent and upcoming solo exhibitions include Temple Bar Gallery & Studios, Dublin (2018); Sirius Arts Centre, Cork (2018); Domobaal Gallery, London (2017); The Dock, Carrick-on Shannon (2017); Galway International Arts Festival (2017). Ailbhe is represented by Domobaal Gallery, London and teaches at the Crawford College of Art & Design, Cork.

The Book Project 9 Stones Artists Michelle Byrne, Cathy Fitzgerald, Annabel Konig, Anthony Lyttle, Remco de Fouw, Martin Lyttle, Jules Michael, Rachel Joynt, & Gwen Wilkinson. This is a collaborative project by 9 Stones Artists and book artist Ciara Healy. Artist Anthony Lyttle uses woodcuts as an integral part of his practice. In sharing his specific knowledge through workshops, the group was introduced to a new skill and visual language. The outcome, a book of hand-printed woodblock prints, reflects on a relationship to their practice and place of work.

About the Artists 9 Stones Artists, formed in 2004. Its members are professional artists living and working in the foothills of the Blackstairs Mountains. Dr. Ciara Healy is a Curator, Critical Writer, Book Artist and Lecturer in Art, Culture & Heritage at IT Carlow.

13 & 14 April, 10am–4pm (Cost: €80) Facilitated by Anthony Lyttle and Ciara Healy. In this two day workshop participants will learn bookbinding and woodblock printing techniques. Taking inspiration from the work of artist Stephen McKenna, participants will create a series of prints. Emerging from this workshop you will have learned the process involved in block printing, book binding, and come away with a book of your own prints! Materials included.

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE 10am – 4.30pm Saturday 9th March €50 Adult workshop

Making, Stretching and Priming a Canvas Facilitated by Fergus Doyle. This workshop will guide participants through the skills and techniques needed to cut and create a timber frame stretcher; stretch a canvas using corner folding techniques for landscape and portrait profiles; and prime a canvas using various finishes. Materials will be provided. All participants will be contacted in advance to establish the size of stretcher that they wish to create

Professional Art Handling Coordinated in collaboration with Irish Art Couriers. Facilitated by John Bracken, West Dean College This three day course offers a short course in fine art handling, wrapping, crating, transporting work, method statements and risk management associated with fine art handling. It will also offer the opportunity for those currently working as art handlers to skills share and network.

About the facilitator John Bracken has 30 years’ experience in the art world and a strong practical foundation in all aspects of the handling, installation and transit of artworks. He spent 16 years at the Tate, the last five as Operations Manager for their Collection Centre. In 2005 he left the Tate to set up Patina Art Collection Care Ltd. Meals included.

Security and Care of Artworks for Facilities & Front of House Staff This workshop has been devised for facilities staff and volunteers working in buildings that exhibit artworks and care for collections. It will cover, general care of works, security and incident reports.

Explore The Exhibition with Bridget Flannery In response to this season’s exhibition of paintings by Stephen McKenna, VISUAL presents two hands-on workshops led by artist Bridget Flannery.

Explore Paint 4 Week course starting 1st March. This workshop will focus on water based painting techniques where participants will explore surface preparation, colour mixing, composition while creating work in response to the themes of the current exhibition.

Explore Drawing 4 Week course starting 29th March Pencil or charcoal? Landscape or still life? This workshop will explore drawing skills through the use of different materials and approaches.

About the Artist Bridget Flannery can be described as painter of nature. Her paintings have an organic relation with certain specific areas and places – bogs, strands, cliff faces, and rock formations. Her forms are closely akin to natural forms and shapes, but while their genesis may be in the natural worlds, they are largely autonomous and follow an internal logic of form and colour brought about by detailed looking, drawing and photography.

EDUCATION VISUAL has an extensive education programme each season to engage all ages in experiencing visual art in a new and exciting way.

School Gallery Tours Primary Schools Make the art come alive with a dedicated guided tour for primary school students of all ages.

Leaving Certificate VISUAL runs an intensive 2 hour tour and workshop, exploring new approaches to the leaving certificate galleries question. Workshops aim to give students a new understanding and perspective, using experiential learning in the galleries to make the question, and answer, come alive.

Make & Play Space Lobby Gallery (Free) Play is a crucial element of experiencing the arts and we want to give all our little visitors a creative experience. Every season at VISUAL a play space in our Lobby Gallery is set aside just for fun, drop in at any time to a readymade space to draw, cut out, make things have fun. Artist Clare Breen has developed plenty of fun activities to keep all ages entertained. The play space is always free and open during our gallery opening hours.

Parent & Toddler Sessions Every Tuesday, 11am (â‚Ź5) Join artist in residence Clare Breen for a weekly session of fun, art, and play for toddlers and their grown-ups in a relaxed environment.

Joe McCadden presents

The Fureys The FUREYS have been entertaining audiences worldwide for 41 years and their folk based music has received standing ovations in some of the biggest concert halls of the world. They have played to prominent world figures including former Irish President Mary McAleese, the late Pope John Paul, President Michael D Higgins and former UK prime minister Tony Blair, who publicly stated his favourite peace song of all time to be the FUREYS song Green Fields of France. Their emotive songs stir many emotions... tears and laughter, sadness and joy.

The Bookshop Florence Green, a free-spirited widow, puts grief behind her and risks everything to open up a bookshop -- the first such shop in the sleepy seaside town of Hardborough, England. But this mini social revolution soon brings her fierce enemies: she invites the hostility of the town’s less prosperous shopkeepers and also crosses Mrs. Gamart, Harborough’s vengeful, embittered alpha female who is a wannabe doyenne of the local arts scene. Book Launch: Eoghan Smith The Failing Heart The Failing Heart is a dark, surreal tale set in Dublin. Haunted by the death of his mother and the impending birth of his ex-lover’s child, a student embarks on an obsessive quest for knowledge. Abandoning his home, running out of money and increasingly paranoid, the people he encounters and the places he inhabits become mysterious sources of terror and anxiety. A contemporary fable of existential melancholia, The Failing Heart plunges the reader into the psyche of a tortured individual who is compelled to live a life beyond human comprehension.

About the Author: Eoghan Smith is an Irish writer, critic and academic. He is the author of John Banville: Art and Authenticity and the co-editor with Simon Workman of Imagining Irish Suburbia in Literature and Culture. The Failing Heart is his first novel.

Rising PR presents

Derek Ryan Derek Ryan continues to maintain his position at the top table of the Irish Country Music. His concert tour includes a mix of old favourites, classic country and Derek’s own original material. His recent number one album The Fire produced a several hits including Heaven Tonight and Homeland. These songs will feature in this new concert tour along with many classics such as Hold On To Your Hat, God’s Plan and Life Is A River. The highlight of Derek’s show is the moment when he is left alone with his guitar on stage. This, to Derek, is a chance for his audience to get to know him better and know more about the music. This show is sure to be filled with energy, enthusiasm and above all sheer entertainment.

The Scourge The Scourge is a deeply moving and hilarious play about an ordinary Irish family struggling to cope with their mother’s illness as they visit her in the nursing home where she spent the last years of her life. The play is based on Michelle Dooley Mahon’s debut novel Scourged, a memoir dedicated to her late mother Siobhan, a Carlow woman, whose voice was sadly silenced by Alzheimer’s disease. It takes a nostalgic look back at growing up in rural Ireland and Michelle’s own personal battles with depression and diabetes, which she has written about with emotion and humour. Commissioned by Wexford Arts Centre with support from Artlinks, Arts Council Ireland, and Wexford County Council. Programmed as part of First Fortnight.

Under the Clock Using Clerys clock as the initial focal point this charming Irish Documentary, by the team who brought you Older than Ireland, examines dating, sex and relationships in Ireland over the decades. A cast of colourful characters recount their first meetings under the clock, without intervention from the film makers and often in the comfort of their own homes or other significant places the film creates an open yet intimate atmosphere. Cursed Murphy Versus the Resistance Presenting Cursed Murphy Versus the Resistance: a mash-up of spoken word performance, cinematic guitar soundscapes and big beats, featuring Cursed Murphy, aka spoken word performer and novelist Peter Murphy (John the Revelator, Shall We Gather at the River), Dan Comerford (Frankenstein Bolts), the Gangnus sisters Rebecca, Tamara and Jasmin, and Kevin Dillon (all members of street drum crew Bloco Gorman). Together, the sextet generates a full-on sensory experience that combines the power of poetry, storytelling and theatrical psychodrama with the visceral attack of rock ‘n’ roll, ambient atmospheres, and warlike Brazilian-influenced rhythms. Orfeo ed Euridice In partnership with the Irish Baroque Orchestra

Christoph Willibald Von Gluck’s most influential opera Orfeo ed Euridice comes to VISUAL this Valentines weekend. Directed and choreographed by Carlow native Emma Martin (artistic director of Carlow based dance company United Fall). This major new production tells the story of Orpheus, a Greek mythological figure who is granted permission to travel to the underworld to rescue his wife Euridice on the condition that he not look at her until they are back on earth. Huggy must go on an adventurous musical quest in search of evidence of Spring if he is to convince his friends that it is time to wake up! Produced by Ceol Connected, this wonderfully interactive performance is led by Thomas Johnston (whistles, song, and uilleann pipes) and Púca Puppets’ Niamh Lawlor. Set design by Eve Fisher.

The Silent Revolution Das Schweigende Klassenzimmer Based on true events, Silent Revolution is a captivating Cold War-era drama told from the perspective of two East-German high school students. It’s 1956 and during a visit to West Berlin, Theo and Kurt witness dramatic footage of the Budapest uprising. Back at school in Stalinstadt, they spontaneously stage a silent protest in class. Set during the Soviet occupation of East Germany the film highlights the stifling grip that the authorities maintained in the region and the impact on those living there. Carlow Youth Theatre Designed to promote the artistic creativity of young people through the theatrical form, workshops are held weekly and offer a constructive space for members to develop skills in the areas of acting, directing, stagecraft and scripting. Coordinated and led by Eimear Cheasty and a panel of highly qualified facilitators, all of whom have in-depth knowledge of theatre making, production and the scripting process. Carlow Youth Theatre endeavours to bring young people through a process that sees them engaging in the creative arts in a constructive, fun and safe manner, while exploring their potential as young theatre makers. Ages 10-14 and 15 -20.

Dancehall Youth Project Dancehall Youth Project is an exciting dance initiative for young people as a partnership between VISUAL, Emma Martin, and Carlow Regional Youth Services. With weekly dance classes (Mixed styles: hip-hop, contemporary, groove), led by experienced teacher & choreographer Olwyn Lyons. Dancehall Project has been running since 2015 giving young people an opportunity to feed their creativity and learn new skills with performance opportunities throughout the year.
