VITALI GROUP

Integrated process: design, construction, management.

The Vitali Spa Group is one of the most important operators in the Italian construction industry which stands alone in its sector for the ability to oversee the entire production chain of the industry and for its high technological profile. The group operates in Italy and Europe in three core business areas: real estate development, infrastructures and demolitions, in addition to engineering and production areas which have strategic and transversal values. The company’s strength lies in the ability to act as single interpreter, meeting the diverse needs of its customers in the process. Relying on its corporate cultural heritage spanning three entrepreneurial generations, Vitali is one of the leading operators in the construction market in Italy and Europe. It uses some of the most advanced European level professional standards and applies an innovative business model. The company is structured to control the entire process which, from production of materials, moves to the planning phase of an operation (Concept and Planning), its implementation (Project and Construction Management) and to the concrete execution (Construction). This process is concluded by the final handover and subsequent management of the finished work (Facility and Property Management), attributing the Group with the function of a fully qualified General Contractor. This, always in total compliance with stipulated turnaround times and attentive cost controls, offering integrated solutions that are tailor-made to customer needs.

Orio al Serio Airport THE CHALLENGE DEMAND AND FIGURES “A one-of-a-kind operation. Demanding from every standpoint: never before, indeed, had such radical runway and taxiway work been successful on such a significant airport, reducing downtime to less than three weeks”. The purchaser’s words, expressed by Andrea Mentasti, Sacbo general manager, revealed the complexity of the work commissioned to the Vitali team. Yet the goal that seemed practically impossible was not only reached, but work was completed a day earlier than originally scheduled, avoiding every and all “nonconformities”. Sacbo invested a total of 50 million Euro for this work which, in addition to flight infrastructure work, included runway light control systems as well as plumbing and IT updates. The key “figures” that characterised Orio al Serio airport infrastructure renovations clearly express the extent and complexity of the job: Overall paved area subject to work: 550,000 square metres (corresponding to 80 football fields) Total new asphalt to be poured: 220,000 tonnes (corresponding to about 6,500 35.5 t lorries). Required horizontal markings: over 70,000 square metres (corresponding to 10 football fields). About 400 km of electric wires laid.
Installation of over 2,000 new flight navigation assistance lights with LED technology.

Rapidity of execution

MEETING THE STRICT SCHEDULE IN 3 PHASES Work on flight infrastructures and other intervention elements at the Orio al Serio airport fully met the strict schedule set by the purchaser. The first two phases were scheduled from March 8th to May 12th, first on runway end safety area 10 (West) and then on runway end safety area 28 (East) with any interruption or limitation to fight activities. The purpose of the third and last phase, from May 13th to June 1st, was to complete renovations and repave the entire runway, links and taxiways. Monday, June 2, 2014, at 6 AM, the International Orio al Serio airport runway was reopened for work, fully meeting the set schedule. The infrastructure was practically completed one day early.

Highest precision

Planning and sustainability.

2 cement mixers and sieves were placed on site to crush excavation scrap material. Over 600 latest generation vehicles with GPS systems to maintain project benchmarks. Regarding the sub-foundation phase, GRADERS and DOZERS also equipped with GPS were used.

Organization and safety.

Only few mounths avaible to fully reconstruct an airport, core operations to be carried out within 20 days, and challenging quality objectives. Despite thousands of machines and more than 300 workers were involved in the construction site, despite the need for carryng out complex and demanding acrivities no accidents happened.

Olbia airport

35.000 sqm of new pavement Vitali Spa’s umpteenth race against time: renovating the Olbia “Costa Smeralda” Italian airport runway, especially used in the summer months. About 80 men worked in three shifts with one hundred perfectly coordinated machines to guarantee the new paving (about 5,000 tonnes) and position of about 150 AVL systems (visual aid lighting - aircraft navigation support runway lights). The contract, totalling around 2 million, is included in a larger renovation and expansion project that required an overall investment of approximately 20 million. To complete work, the Olbia airport was closed to air traffic from midnight on Monday, March 2nd to midnight on Saturday, March 7th, 2015. Just 6 days of intense work dividing the 24h into 3 shifts.

The contract concerns the entire runway re-pavement works (airport closed from March 2-7 with uninterrupted 24h work); following this phase, work also concerned the sub-foundation for the sole operating airport link. Old AVL (visual aid lighting) systems were also removed; the new bases relocated under the asphalt strip and then all runway lights (relocated after the new asphalt was laid), laying new raceways for their wiring. Lastly, horizontal signs were renovated.
