Completed Cibolo Valley Elementary School
Cibolo Valley Elementary School in Cibolo, Texas—located between Austin and New Braunfels, Texas—is the newest and largest school for Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District. The 153,000 sf campus was approved by voters as part of a May 2013 bond referendum and opened in August 2015. Challenged for space, the district recognized a need for a new school facility. LPA, who has worked with the district for more than 15 years, completing several elementary schools and a new high school for the district, was asked to help bring this new school to fruition. While other schools in the district serve 700 to 800 students, Cibolo Valley Elementary is designed for a 900 student initial capacity with room for expansion of up to 1,200 students. The school incorporated several sustainable features, including two on-site cisterns. The main entry cistern stores rain water harvest from an adjacent roof and piped condensation from several mechanical units. The cistern is then connected into the adjacent irrigation system for landscaping, helping the district to save on water usage. The second cistern located in the discovery zone courtyard, collects water off of a large butterfly roof. The harvested water is then connected to the irrigation system for landscaping throughout the courtyard. Other sustainable features include high-efficiency HVAC system; automated electric lighting control system; recycled materials used during construction; low-VOC materials throughout; and high-durability, low-maintenance interior finishes, such as polished concrete flooring throughout the campus.
Role: Facade design, CD production work, courtyard design, rendering and graphic presentations, partial management of the project during it’s construction.

San Antonio Independent School District renovation and addition for the Longfellow Middle School serving 988 students in grades 6 through 8. This project included a new addition of a Fine Arts Building, administration building and renovation of an existing building. The new Fine Arts building was designed to incorporate new classrooms for students for music, art activities, and also a new cafeteria to provide students and faculty with the newest and most recent equipment. A new administration building was designed in order to concentrate all the administrative staff in one main building. The new administration building includes additional offices, reception and also serves as a new main entrance for the staff and visitors. A renovation of existing buildings included: new paint, new surface materials, upgraded MEP and the replacement of two roofs. The challenge of this renovation was to make sure that all the phasing was done in full coordination with the school district.
Role: Rendering and Graphic presentations, full management of the project during it’s construction.

The design of the New Small High School should reflect an innovative and collaborative spirit. An outward focused campus invites community, business and institutional partnerships to support technology driven education. A central 3 dimensional courtyard space and glazed north facade orients to the public side and places a premium on making visible the daily activities of the innovative educational process. With a buildable site of almost 44,000 sf the building is organized around the east-west axis to maximize exposure to daylight, as well as views to the bay. The program is stacked on three floors allowing abundant space for outdoor learning as “Learning Happens Everywhere”, while the ‘U’ shape configuration allows direct access to an adjacent outdoor learning area from most interior space. In addition, the building is used as a buffer between the large outdoor learning / amphitheater and the parking, as well as any negative impacts of the adjacent light industrial buildings.

The 3d indoor / outdoor campus: each floor weaves the indoors and outdoors to maximize the types of spaces where students can collaborate and learn. The synergies between the 3rd floor program components create healthy habits for students; a mind-set about wellness, social interaction, knowledge and digital literacy for life-long learning. Common spaces now serve more than one purpose, giving opportunities for students to define the possibilities.
inspiration for the design of collaborative learning spaces comes from the idea of creating connections between engineering + design. …space to connect and grow student knowledge, space to connect with community and space to focus on independent growth and reflection….
engineering + design moments for independent reflection
the energy of the mind is the essence of life. aristotle
connect knowledge + growth
CONNECTIONS create community + social connections
unique individuals form a collective [pattern] The variety in space types are emphasized through interior design and material approach: • connections happen in protected space - like the cave of a tree, • connections may be layered and socially interconnected – like the layers of branches coming together • connections occur with reflection as individuals – with a ripple effect of integrated learning

The design concept for Bishop Elementary was grounded in the tenents of Universal Design and Equity. Every feature, every space, every opportunity has been designed to allow every user to have the same experience. This was of high importance to the school district as Bishop is the home of the district wide severe needs special education program. By focusing on the experience of these learners, Hord Coplan Macht designed a school that engages and supports all learners. As a replacement school on the same site, Bishop is designed with an architectural aesthetic that pays homage to the history of the neighborhood. Through an architectural language that harkens back to a prairie style, the building accentuates a horizontal plane with deep roof overhangs and linear elements. The building is all on one floor level, as is the exterior play, allowing students that confined to wheel chairs the same experiences as those without. This is a site and a building with no stairs. Students are welcomed to this 43,514 square foot single story school by entering into the heart of the building. The entry is flanked by the Learning Commons and flows directly into the Dining Commons. The gymnasium is immediately adjacent and can open up into the Dining Commons through a large operable wall, creating a single large space to support the multitude of all school and all community events. The classrooms are organized in wings north and south of the core, all having equitable access to the shared common spaces. The exterior landscape was carefully designed as an extension of the building. An exterior dining patio flows from the Dining Commons. The south facing exterior playground is a thoughtful collection of paths that create a variety of spaces, allowing all students to engage in a type of play they are interested in. Every component of the apparatus is fully accessible allowing every student the same opportunity to experience the joys of play and the outdoors.

What if school was your home? For the 200 students that attend the new Cherrelyn Elementary School in the Englewood School District, it is exactly that. Over 20% of the students attending Cherrelyn are classified as homeless and the most stable part of their day, are the seven hours they are attending school. As a replacement school on the existing site, it is designed around the fundamental idea that this school is a home. Students are welcomed to this 41,660 sf single story school by entering through the front porch. The heart of the school is flanked by the Learning Commons, STEM Lab, and open Dining Commons. The school is organized around two classroom wings, each supported by a themed break out space. The theme of each break out space comes from the history of original Cherrelyn Elementary School, which includes the Tree House, the Locker Room, the Sound Studio, and Next Door. The history of the existing school was very important to the school and the community as a whole. Specific elements of the existing school have been salvaged and are incorporated into the design of the new school including: wood floors, locker doors, wood doors, speakers, and trees. These elements became the design concepts behind the breakout spaces within the school.

Legacy Peak Elementary educates, empowers and engages students via project based learning, an authentic approach that captures the heart and passions of students and teaches them how to use that knowledge in real life situations. Until recently, the design of education was more than 100 years old and focused on the needs of the industrial revolution. Today, we have completely different needs as a society and economy. Today’s communities need schools that build the capacity of students to think outside the box, collaborate, communicate, lead and engage – not just in the classroom but in real life situations. The Academy 20 school district established these educational goals and mission for this new school as well as made a promise to their voters that it would be designed, constructed and opened within a 16 month schedule. HCM teamed with Nunn Construction under a design build contract to accomplish this task. The design process and schedule was broken into three distinct paths, the civil and entitlement work, structure, and the building and landscaping. Bid and construction packages were issued and managed as a team, allowing construction to begin within 5 months of the project kickoff. The 93,000 square foot, two-story school consisted of three distinct programs, which included a 60,000 sf K-5 elementary school, the 22,625 square foot Center For Modern Learning, and the 10,500 sf Challenger Program. Each of these three distinct programs have their own entry, but are part of a single building and have the opportunity to share resources like the gymnasium and outdoor play grounds.
