He I O

to all the beauties (and possibly handsome men) out there! If you follow VIVA GLAM Magazine on our social media, then you know that our summer was more than thrilling .

First, we went to Cancun to the beautiful Grand Oasis Spa and Resort where we shot a new reality 1V show, Swimsuit Centerfold. We will be releasing the first special edition, The Swimsuit Edition, early next year. Just a few days after we came back, we were off to Costa Rica where we shot our fashion story "Viva Vixen" which you can find in this issue. This is the third time we shot Pamela Francesca who is beyond joy to work with. Read about Costa Rica in the Travel section of this issue. Costa Rica has changed a lot within the past decade and we were pleasantly surprised to see the positive change. We even found vegan food in their grocery store!!! Our next trip took Angelica Curiel, Holley Wolfe and myself to Europe. Our first stop was London, where we shot a promo video for the company. The Four Seasons Hotel was very good to us and we enjoyed our stay. Our next stop was Paris. Ahhhhh , this was my first time in this fash ion forward city and I can't wait to go back. Then, we fiew to Sardinia where we stayed for a couple of nights. I love this part of the world with good people and beautiful nature. After Sardinia we jumped on a yacht and sailed the coast of the South of France: Monte Carlo , Cannes and Saint Tropez. Saint Tropez was the first time I regretted not bringing a photographer with us. Since VIVA GLAM is a self-sustainable unit, what did I do? I grabbed my Canon Rebel camera, had Angelica do Holley's hair and here comes a 16 page editorial, "La Parisienne", which you can find in this issue . I've never shot anyone before, so I feel my first time turned out pretty good. But I'll let YOU be the judge. Our beautiful cover story with Joanna Krupa was shot by Deja Jordan in Calabasas, California. Joanna is also such a joy to work with and we were happy she made time for us. You might know VIVA GLAM Magazine is an independent magazine fueled by the passion of a few fantastic people. If you like what we do, follow us on Instagram, Periscope, Snapchat, Facebook, You Tube, Twitter and check our website daily. And if you'd like to receive our magazine four times a year, simply subscribe on our website www.VivaGlamMagazine.com. I hope you enjoy this issue. I want you to feel good when you close it. And if you do, it served its purpose. Let me know, I'd like to know!

A Bronzing Beauty Tip by Ma~ up Artist Cat Thomson

If I had ONE PRODUCT to recommend for year round use} it would be Stila's Stay All Day BRONZER FOR THE FACE AND BODY I use the bronzer to create a primary look. This is a look that you start with before you add color to your eyes and cheeks.

f

Ione'

product to for year rp und \ use, it would be for the face and body. I use 1009 11iB is a look that color to your eyes and

eb~men(j

First apply your base makeup. Base makeup consists of primer, foundation and concealer. Then, use the matte bronzer to contour and shape your features. Contour around the face, in the hollows of the cheeks, forehead, temples and along the jawline. By doing this, you are shaping your cheeks so you know where to apply your blush.

16

WWWVIVAGLAMMAGAZINE.COM

For your eyes, apply the bronzer in your inner and outer crease. This shapes your eyes so you know where to start and end with your eye shadow. And finally, for the nose, I like to start in the inner crease and bring it down the bridge half way to make the eyes look deeper. This also defines your nose naturally. This may sound complicated, but is actually quite simple. This look never fails, and as time goes by you will see how much easier it is to do your makeup. www.stilacosmetics.com FB: Cat Thomson Beauty IG: catthomsonbeauty

KnockOff Cosmetics Many of us have seen makeup products that seem too good to be true. Much lower in cost} cosmetic knockoffs are increasingly a growing concern for both the cosmetic manufacturer and consumer. Why? BECAUSE FAI(E COSMETIC

PRODUCTS CAN REPRESENT A REAL AND SERIOUS HEALTH THREAT TO THE CONSUMER. Did you know that high levels of toxic materials such as mercur)lj lead and arsenic have been found in knockoff cosmetics? And there has been atleast one reported death related to the use ofthese illegal products. Brodsky, Commercial Director of Net Names, a firm specializing in online brand protection and anti-counterfeiting services, has been following the fake cosmetics situation in the United States and abroad. We asked Andrew about how the consumer can identify and protect herself against counterfeit purchases. Andrew Brodsky believes in

And rew 18

educating the consumer in avoiding the threats posed by fake cosmetic products. As a consumer, by taking interest in the cosmetic counterfeit scourge and educating yourself about what can be done about it, you can protect yourself against a potentially toxic health threat and also gain a deeper understanding of what is happening globally regarding the selling of these counterfeIT products.

What should online shoppers do first to make sure they are not ordering counterfeit cosmetics? The first thing to check is price. If a product is being offered for 30 percent less than anywhere else, there is a high likelihood that the product is a fake. Consumers can also go into detective mode by looking for clues on the packaging and the product itself. There are distinct signs that could reveal whether the product is counterfeit, such as poor spelling and the use of a non-standard logo. What sites should online shoppers visit to avoid buying counterfeit cosmetics? Whenever possible, shoppers should purchase items directly through reputable, known retailers whether national or local, their websites, or the manufacturer's website to avoid a potential counterfeit purchase. It's best to purchase the cosmetics in the brand's store or boutique-though even high-end department stores have unwittingly carried fake branded products. If the cosmetics company doesn't sell their products directly to the consumer, more often than not they'll list authorized re-sellers and legitimate retail stores on their website. Consumers should proceed with extreme caution when purchasing goods on large online marketplaces such as TaoBao, Alibaba and 1688.com. How should brands educate consumers in avoiding the threats posed by fake cosmetics? Companies often list vital information about fake products on their websites. Websites usually include outlets for consumers to report fake products directly to the company. Brands can make consumer vigilance another arrow in their quiver by first identifying high traffic infringements on their brand, and then taking a cue from counterfeiters by getting active in their consumer facing communications. Are there any key signs to look for when shopping online to prevent buying counterfeit products? To summarize: the most obvious signal that a counterfeit is on offer is a too-goodto-be-true price. Our rule is that if it seems too good to be true, it most likely is. Aside from price, issues like believable-looking packaging and graphics, and packaging that looks genuine, not copied, should be taken into consideration. Checking the origination point of the shipment is another possible signal. And finally, consumers should be on the lookout for unsecured payment processes. Many sites purporting to sell products simply take the payment, and don't even ship the item ' Can counterfeit cosmetics be found in stores as well or just online? Absolutely. As mentioned above, even reputable department stores, chain drug stores and the like have unwittingly sold fake branded products. There . , was one investigative report that found fake MAC cosmetics being sold in a dollar store-at a fraction of the price, of course-and they were found to contain highly toxic levels of lead, copper, and beryllium (a known carcinogen). Stories like this abound. A recent report from London found that in addition to those pOisons, various fake cosmetics might also contain arsenic, mercury, cadmium, and even cyanide. Andrew Brodsky believes in educating the consumer in avoiding the threats posed by fake cosmetic products. As a consumer, by taking interest in the cosmetic counterfeit scourge and educating yourself about what can be done about it, you can protect yourself against a potentially toxic health threat and also gain a deeper understanding of what is happening globally regarding the selling of these counterfeit products.

While on holiday, the gentleman may only need to carry one dressy item for a night on the town. This might include a sports jacket that is not your traditional business attire. Rather, it says, "I'm here to relax and play" instead of "I'm walking to the pace of the payroll." Once again, a night on the town should be effortless and comfortable, not stiff or uptight. Luggage is becoming a huge fashion statement. Ditch your briefcase for a fashionable travel bag. One way to make it stand Your CLASSIC out is to not choose basic black. And remember, a vacation is a great excuse to wear brighter than usual colors. For example, canary yellow pants with a paisley button down shirt will make a trendy fashion statement. But at the same time, a simple white linen shirt and rolled up jeans will do nicely as well.

Grooming on vacation for the most part is just the relaxed, unkempt look. Women let their hair down and men grow a beard. Get into kickback mode by allowing yourself to grow a five o'clock shadow if you are typically clean cut in the city. Or let your hair go without mousse or product. Concentrate instead on getting that perfect accessory: the ultimate deep, dark tan. A pair of classic sunglasses is a must for any gentleman on vacation. Pair them with either your board shorts or blazer; they add style and complete your overall look. Remember, while laying poolside, taking a stroll, hang snorkeling, zip lining, four wheeling or never leaving room, a gentleman can do it all in style.

CELEBRATE EVERY OCCASION WITH MOSAIC EVENT Written by Candace Kita

Floral Design

Marine is recognized in the Greater Los Angeles Area as ONE OF THE TOP FLORAL AND EVENT DESIGNERS of this century Her love of the artistic and alluring is what started her journey She projects the beauty she sees in hfe into her arrangements by incorporating rich textures and bold and tasteful colors, combining it all with non-traditional techniques.

I\ Th8 Vl8

is something about her use of bold colors and smooth transitioning patterns, designed in beautiful and architectural fashion, that makes her designs not just any arrangement, but rather a piece of art. Marine now carries her passion, ~"" .,.......... rt ll~ tir eye, Bachelor of Science in Interior Design , and a decade of experience to her own co mpan y, MOSAIC Floral Event Design , where her designs continue to amaze and astound people!

74

www.mosaicfloraldesign.com Marine, tell us about your experience in floral and event design. How long have you been a top designer and how did you become interested in this creative endeavor? I have been involved in floral design since I was seventeen. I started working in a flower shop as a sales person back in my hometown. It was just so amazing to me how designers were creating beautiful floral compositions very fast and with confidence. After moving to Los Angeles, I was looking for a flower shop to work in while working on my B.S. in Interior Design. Since then, I stuck in the floral design industry. First, it was because it's what I knew how to do, and I received encouragement from clients, college designers and friends saying I have "an eye for design." Second, it was a therapeutic outlet and the outcome of my vision was rewarding. In 2003, at the age of 21, I got a job as a head designer in one of the top fioral and event design production companies in Beverly Hills and was mentored by the "King of Flowers," Kevin Lee. I created floral arrangements for celebrity weddings, red carpet events and top A-list clients' special occasions. Since then, I've found my passion and motivation everyday in the floral design industry. Recently you have created your own MOSAIC Floral Event Design Company. Tell us more about the concept behind it. I enjoy exploring colors, tex1ures, patterns and shapes while designing a floral arrangement or a floral installation. This is similar to mosaics that have those elements but usually they are expressed through pieces of glass or tile. To me, flowers and foliages are

prefect tools to create mosaics. They naturally have an endless array of colors, beautiful textures and shapes, as well as nature's patterns that I find truly inspirational. MOSAIC Floral Event Design follows all of the above elements but in a new contemporary and non-traditional way. It doesn't matter if it is an oversized floral backdrop or an asymmetrical floral "just because" arrangement, the outcome is very different and eye-catching.

In addition to cutting-edge and trendsetting floral arrangements, MOSAIC Floral Event Design offers what other opportunities for clients interested in learning about floral arrangement? We offer floral design workshops in our studio for those who would like to learn how to create floral arrangements for their homes. The workshops are DIY projects with fresh flowers where everyone gets hands-on experience from day one. When it comes to wedding flowers, what influences the colors and style you use? The most influence comes from the couple's personality and the venue where the wedding will take place. We work together to create a perfect color pallet and style for their special day. Most of us work within a budget for special occasions. What would you recommend for the bride on a budget? For a couple on a budget, I would first recommend to really think about what is important for them on their special day. Is it the decor (which I hope it is), venue, food or music? Then we go from there. Choosing seasonal fiowers can be less costly than off-season flowers. Also, don't forget the importance of lighting, which can create a dramatic atmosphere. If readers would like to learn more about MOSAIC Floral Event Design, where would they go to learn more about your creative designs and your career? We are pretty active on social media, where you can see daily posts of our past and current works (lnstagram: @mosaicfloraldesign. Facebook: MOSAIC Floral Event Design). Our website, www.mosaicfloraldesign.com. has a port101io of our past events and new collection of floral designs, and I create a new collection Eliil,l;.h year. Also, you can find more about my bio , career and featured events on the website.

WHAT 8 eARN 8M? MEAT CONSUMPTION is one of the hottest topics that people allover the world are currently debating. In fact} many are beginning to WO ND ER IF WE NEED to eat meat at all. Written by Candace Kita want to know answers to simple questions such as, "Was the caveman origina Iy a meat -eater or a vegetarian?" "Are people taller if they consume meat?" "Are our bodies designed to break down flesh or are we supposed to be eating a plant -based diet?" "Is cancer really linked to eating meat?" "Where do you get your protein if you don't eat meat?" " Can you lead a healthy life without consuming flesh?"

P80 R8

For decades, people have been debating on this controversial topic, but today, we have seen a shift towards plant-based diets allover the world. And in 2015, the vegan movement, which is the counterpoint to the meat-eating movement, is one of the fastest

growing trends in the world today. Melanie Joy, a social psychologist and activist, has given presentations on carnism on five continents. She has seen evidence of the vegan movement growing and believes that in 15 years, eating meat will be viewed by society like smoking is today. She also thinks that products will be labeled "c" for carnistic rather than "V" for vegan. Melanie says that carnism is an ideology; it is the invisible belief system that conditions people to eat certain animals. She said, "Most of us don't think about why we eat certain animals or eat animals at all. One of the things to remember is that for most people today in the world, we don't eat animals because we have

,

www, carnlsm, org to. Rather, we eat them because we choose to. It is no longer a necessity. If it is a choice, it takes on an ethical side that it didn't have before." Melanie believes that most people care about animals and don't want them to suffer. She went on to say, "Most of us have a connection to animals. We have a natural empathy to other living things and this includes animals ." However, she went on to note that at the same time, most people also eat animals. And these animals suffer terribly in the process. She believes that eating animals requires us to block our awareness and natural empathy. We see food on our plate and don't see the animal. For example, Melanie added if most people were served a golden retriever they would be disgusted. Melanie believes that we are conditioned to disconnect from our experiences . She said, "Carnism requires us to act against our core values . Most of us have the human core values of justice, compassion and authenticity. But when we eat animals , we go against our core values . Carnism is violent. Meat cannot be attained without violence. Carnism operates on defenses that numb our feelings so we act against our values without realizing what we are doing ."

ways 'humane meat' is almost more brutal than inhumane meat because we are taking the life of an individual that wants to continue living. And taking the life of an individual that developed relationships with their species and others around them," she said . The terms omnivore, carnivore and vegetarian may seem like simple words to understand. Yet, they may mean different things to different people. So I asked Melanie to better define this terminology. She explained, "Omnivores by definition can eat both flesh and plant matter. Carnivores need to ingest meat to survive. It describes biology, not ideology. And a meat eater describes a behavior aside from an ideology. Now, I choose to use the terms vegans and non-vegans and sometimes say meat eater."

WHY WE

LOVE ..OOGS EAT PIGS

After better understanding these terms, I asked her about a more complex concept, carnistic defenses. What are they and how do they allow us to accept what we would normally deem unethical? She told us , "I have three examples of carnistic defense mechanisms. I call them the three "n's" of justifications. These are myths presented as fact: Eating animals is normal, natural and necessary. These myths have been used to justify violent practice in history such as slavery and male dominance. Another example is that carnism teaches us that animals are lacking any personality or individuality on their own . For example: a pig is a pig and all pigs are the same ."

At the same time, they an animal is an injustice to the animal being eaten . don't realize that what we call 'humane meat' is But how is it an injustice that encompasses society extremely violent." as a whole? She went on to say, "This is the mentality that enables violence and oppression . It is the same regardless of who the victim of violence and She went on to talk about the reason why the idea of "humane meat" was created . "The concept of oppression is. The experience of each set of victims 'humane meat' was constructed by animal agricultural will always be somewhat unique. These are conscious, intelligent individuals with lives that matter to them just as our lives matter to us. We choose to confine and slaughter them simply because we want to. Why? We benefit and we profit. And the irony is we are harming ourselves in the process both psychologically and physically. Most people willingly do not participate in carnism. But carnism has conditioned us to act according to its tenants, thereby robbing us of our own freedom to choose what type of impact we want to have on the world and also on ourselves." Melanie is extremely passionate about educating people about carnism. I asked her about her organization, Beyond Carnism. She said one of her main goals is to expose and transform carnism. She does this through education and advocacy with a strong focus on raising awareness. She said, "We believe that as long as people are unaware of carnism, we will never be able to have an objective discussion about eating animals as long as we are operating within the system that conditions us to eat animals. And so our goal is to raise awareness of Melanie says carnism so people can make their that CARNISM IS food choices freely. Without awareness there is no free it is the invisible belief choice."

AN IDEOLOGY system that

So strong is her belief in the vegan conditions people movement, she recently wrote a to eat book, Why We Love Dogs, Eat certain animals. Pigs and Wear Cows. One reason why I appreciated her book is because rather than explaining why we shouldn't eat meat, she explained why we do eat meat. She explained, "Most people transition slowly. Most people do not transition overnight. Leather usually comes later for people if it comes at all. I advocate meat reduction. The book grew over my personal experience as a long time meat eater. I grew up with a dog who I loved and cared about. But I grew up eating lots of meat, eggs and dairy. It wasn't until I got sick after eating a hamburger that I became open to information about animal agriculture. It transformed my life and my worldview. I was shocked that I could have gone my whole life participating in cruelty and oppression. That was so opposed to the way I was. I was unaware

78

WWWVIVAGLAMMAGAZINE.COM

of something that was so contrary to me. And when I wanted to share this information, no one wanted to hear what I had to say. How can good people participate in this horrible practice without even knowing what they are doing? It is devastating to the ecosystem and themselves. Given what we know, given how harmful and violent this is, why are we doing this and why are people defensive about their choice to eat animals? I think it is very important to talk about the solution that is veganism and the problem that is carnism. When people recognize these defenses they lose the power over them. The problem is not the individual, it is the system. The problem is the end result of a deeply entrenched oppressiveism." I had also eaten meat most of my life. And I considered myself to be a "good" person. So I understood how one could be brainwashed by society into thinking eating meat is the societal norm and that nothing was wrong with it. I wondered what she thought of the upcoming generation and what she would say to them in regards to eating meat and its global effect on the planet? Melanie replied, "The United Nations said when we reduce our consumptions of animal products it is a win-win situation. It is good for the animals, good for

the planet and good for our hearts and minds. When we become aware of carnism, we can make choices based on what we authentically think and feel rather than what we have been taught to think and feel. This can be tremendously empowering." Melanie made me realize the global effect of eating meat that I had not previously thought about. And for this I was grateful. Perhaps, modern society is learning from people like Melanie Joy and ancient cultures such as the Hindus and Hari Krishnas who have been vegetarian for centuries. I hope society will come to understand carnism and its effect on today's world and future generations in a more enlightened and compassionate way.

Making from Scratch Helen's most popular desserts are the cake pops, baklava, fruit shaped cookies and edible babies that are extremely lifelike. after we tasted her spectacular desserts at the launch of the Celebrity Issue with Leah Remini. The first thing I noticed about Helen's creations is that they are exceptional, innovative, and had so much extra care taken for each handmade item. I especially loved the cake pops that were moist, full of chocolate and so delicate. I asked her how long she has been creating her masterpieces and what her culinary background was. Helen told me, "1 have been cooking and baking for about 20 years now. I took a few baking classes at Le Cordon Bleu, but it was too easy for me. So I left the program because I already knew what they were teaching." Helen is known for several signature dishes. Her most popular are Mediterranean and Middle Eastern. We had the opportunity to sample her tabbouleh salad, stuffed grape leaves, kale salad and hummus on a recent photo shoot with Joanna Krupa. The entire crew loved this healthy, fresh and delicious menu that Helen had created for us. And Joanna especially loved the fresh kale salad!

She explained, "1 am working out of my home and looking to expand into a store front in the next year. I had a tough time figuring out a name. Then, I remembered how I always ended up wearing flour by the time I am done baking. Hence the name 'Floured Up Baking'!" do you think about bullying in our school systems today? And what do you recommend parents and children do to combat this sensitive issue? Bullying is a horrible thing to witness and experience. It seems to be something that happens to almost everyone-even the bullies have been bullied at some point. It seems silly now, but I was bullied in elementary school for wearing braces ... yeah, braces. Humans seem to delight in noticing the "different". Being called "metal mouth" and "brace face" was hard to experience as a young kid, but I was able to get through it with good parents and the knowledge that I'm a child of an awesome God. Today, bullying obviously still happens, but because of smartphones and Internet it seems to have a more troubling, massive effect. As parents, I think one way to combat this sensitive issue is to educate your children that not everyone is the same. Raising your kids to know that mental/physical abilities, sexual orientations, fashion statements, and religious and personal interests differ in all of us as human beings, but those things are to be of interest and celebrated rather than ridiculed. As children, one way to combat bullying is not to participate, and if you see it happening, whether it's online or physical, report it or step in to stop it. To finish, I like to quote Miss America 2014, Nina Davuluri, who happens to be East-Indian American. She experienced ugly and evil cyberbullying as people tweeted and posted about her race, her skin color, called her a terrorist, and more. Miss California, one must be beautiful, confident, talented and have poise. What is the most important thing you would tell young women today about how they present themselves in society? There is 100% truth in the phrase, "be yourself." As cliche as that phrase may be, it is so true. My parents always encouraged me and my brothers to develop our passions and talents and then use those abilities to improve the world we live in. It's a bonus if we find a way to make a living at it! All of us live in a digital world where everything we post is out there for the public to see. It's important to fill our online footprint with content that best represents us, our talents, and our hearts. Whether it's a talent or skill in music, science, marketing, entertainment, etc. develop it as much as you can to make a nourishing contribution to society. Most importantly, find a way to get involved in your communities in order to offer your talents to those who need the help that you were once given so generously by someone.

Who has been your biggest influence in dance? I've had many influences in dance including Mikhail Baryshnikov, Patrick Swayze, and Slavic Krykklyvi.

What is your favorite style of dance? I like a combination of ballet and contemporary. I choreographed a solo that I'm really proud of in the stage show SWAY, where I got to showcase my ballet and contemporary skills. Doing that piece was really special. The audience reaction was amazing and the emotion conveyed through the movement drew people in. I love connecting with my fans through dance. If you couldn't dance what would you do instead? I have no idea what I would've done without dance. Dance has been transformative for me. I get so much joy out of dancing and I know it is one of my biggest passions.

What is the biggest difference between dating in Hollywood and your native Australia? The biggest difference between dating here in Hollywood and back home in Australia is just time. Hollywood, in my opinion, is where everyone from around the world comes to pursue their careers, so people here inherently have less time to focus on finding the right person. I'm not saying wanting to focus on bettering your life by pursuing a career is bad, otherwise I'd be one hell of a hypocrite. I'm just saying that it's not easy to date when you have to be so focused on chasing your dreams. Back home, people have different expectations and more time. But when something is important to you, you make time, and so when I'm ready, I'll make love a priority.

What is the biggest assumption women make about ballroom dancers? Assume you are all arrogant, or players?

GREEN ISSUE

I think the biggest assumption that I get is that I am not interested in a long-lasting relationship. In fact, it couldn't be any further from the truth. I look forward to finding my best friend who I could then call my wife. I'm looking forward to starting a family and sharing a long beautiful life with them.

Do you think women are hesitant to date you as your job requires you to be intimate with your dancing partner? I haven't had a problem with dating. It's just been more of a personal choice for me to focus on my career now. I'm a loyal and respectful guy so in my past relationships I have been conscious of my girlfriend's feelings about my relationship with my dance partner. Being dance partners with someone does foster a level of intimacy and connection, but that could mean a beautiful friendship and one that doesn't lead to romance. And if I'm already in a committed relationship then my girlfriend has nothing to worry about.

The biggest difference between

DATING

here in

HOLLYWOOD and back home in

is just time.

If you're single, is it easier for you and your dance partner to become romantic? Or is that a misconception? If the situation is right, where I'm single and my dance partner is single, then certainly romance could develop if there is chemistry. I don't think that's a misconception. There have been many beautiful relationships that started in the ballroom.

Do you find it easier to date women inside or outside of your field? I've dated women [that are] both in the entertainment industry and that have other professions. I'm open to exploring a relationship wherever I find a real connection. I think because I'm so busy performing and going to industry events, it is natural for me to meet more women through my work. What is the hardest thing about dating in Hollywood?

The hardest thing about dating in Hollywood is not having enough time to dedicate to dating right now. I think it's important to meet enough people to know what you like. I haven 't tried online dating . I like to meet someone and have a connection with them in person, so that narrows my pool down quite a lot. But to me, it's about quality not quantity. And I kn ow for me it is all about timing so when the time is right, I'll meet the one.

What are the common mistakes women make on first dates? Common mistakes women make on first dates with me are not talking enough or not askin g enough questions. Nothing is more attractive to me than great conversation and having a similar sense of humor. If you're not talking , how am I supposed to know anything about you? On the flip-side, there is nothing than less attractive than when a girl only talks about herself and is not interested in getting to kn ow you. That comes across as very shallow. You have to strike the ri ght balance on a first date of expressing w ho you are and showing interest in getting to kn ow me, too. I'm a very curious person by nature and so I ask a lot of questions. I like to get to know the girl that I may potentially date and would hope that she genuinely w ants to make a connection and know me, too. What do you think were your mistakes when dating in Hollywood? I'd say my biggest mistake when dating in Hollywood, or anywhere for that matter, was missing being in the moment. It was not all the time, but that's the biggest mistake I've made and it's usually because I'm overanalyzing or over-thinking things. Think Billy Joel, "Leave a Tender Moment Alone. " What advice could you offer women in the dating scene? Talk, ask questbns, and don't be afraid to show your sense of humor. Aso, take pride in your appearance. You're a woman and I like to bok at you. It's very important because confidence is sexk'lr than good boks. What would you like to see a girl wearing on your first date? On our fi rst date, it would be nice to see the girl I'm out with wearing something that highlights her personality and her body. Don 't wear something too skimpy. There is something sexy about leaving things to the imagination. What do you like to wear on a first date? I like to wear something masculine that's smart, casual, and relaxed . I take pride in looking after myse~ and so I tend to wear form -fitting looks.

Fashion and other passions ,

One thing every man should have in his closet? A man should always have a nice tailored suit in his closet. The right suit shows you care about your appearance and that you mean business in and out of the boardroom. There is a confidence that comes w ith wearing a fine suit and women find a confident man sexy. Do you have a favorite era of clothes for men? 1920s is my favorite decade for clothing. The fash b ns from that era had so much character. Getting dressed was more special back then and peopk'l took so much pride in their appearance. And I love a three pk'lce suit! Do you have a favorite designer? And why? I bve Klein Epstein Parker, because th ey bring that classic styk'l of the 1920s back but with modern embellishments. Their suits and tuxes are soph isticated and fashion forward. What are your other passions? I love to express myself, and the arts are a great outlet for me to do so. I'm devoting time to music and acting now, and so I can 't wait to show the world the Aussk'l triple threat in me. I am also passionate about health and fitness, and I'm excited to share my knowledge on how to live a healthy lifestyle. What can we expect to see from you next? Whats next for Henry? I'm honored to be starring as the male lead in the Los Angeles run of the Broadway show "Forever Tango" November 13-15, 201 5 at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills. This show is a fierce, passionate, and romantic showcase of true Argentine tango, which is a gorgeous art form. Why Women

Fee G i ty \ Saying No) and How To Change That We have all had a hard time saying no at some point. Maybe it was a FRIEND THAT ASI(ED a favor that you were uncomfortable with} a lover or partner pushing a boundary that you set} or no to a date that you were not interested in. Written by By Dr. Arnie Harwick

As women i~

a young age that the role of relationships our lives supersedes the importance of overall success, the capacity to win a game, and sometimes even identity. Intimacy is displayed as a priority over identity. In the fairy tales that we are read as little girls, we hear of the princesses who awaken from their slumber in order to marry the prince, not to fight evil or take over the world. Carol Gilligan, in the feminist manifesto In A Different Voice: Psychological Theory and Women's Development, discusses how women go as far as to feel a fear of success. She states that having success and being assertive over men produces an "anticipation

of certain negative consequences such as the threat of social rejection and loss of femininity." She continues to explain that a woman's success anxiety increases when it is at the expense of another person's failure. It has even been observed that on a playground, little boys will play to win. Quitting the game is never encouraged, even if someone gets their feelings hurt. The boys tend to play games that are often team oriented and competitive in nature. Little girls are often playing games with less competitive stakes, and often quit before the game has come to completion. Looking at these cultural and developmental factors, it is no wonder that women have a hard time standing their ground and stating a firm "No!" when needed.

Because masculine values tend to prevail culturally, women are often left to question their opinions. When being questioned about a moral dilemma, a woman is more likely to second guess her response when asked if she was sure that was the response she wanted to give, while men are more likely to stand by their answer.

Consider whether the request is reasonable. Stop apologizing. If the task is something that you can not or do not want to do, say no instead of saying, "I'm sorry, but..."

Saying no is a way to

To give a positive perspective, this questioning and emphasis on relationships and intimacy emphasizes the importance of a woman's view of morality. But, saying no and being assertive can be looked at as a moral choice. Saying no is a way to take care of yourself, to set boundaries, and to assert yourself. Whether it is at the workplace, with your family, or in bed, here are a few pointers on how to overcome the guilt in saying no. Ask for more information to know what the facts are. Practice saying no. It may feel awkward at first, but the repetition will take the fear out of the word. Practice saying it in front of a mirror. Try saying it at low stakes situations such as when ordering a coffee, or about less meaningful topics while chatting with friends.

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF,

It doesn't end with learning to say no. Let's play the devil's advocate and consider the consequences in saying yes.

to set boundaries,

Does saying yes get in the way or distract you from and to assert what you want to do? Will you end up angry at yourself. yourself for saying yes? Will resentment develop and build up? Will engaging in this activity cause you to have a lack of communication or dishonest communication? As a woman, you have a responsibility to yourself, and you can also model this behavior of being assertive and saying no to other women in your life.

VVh3n they were released towards the end of the war, my grandparents traveled back to Los Angeles and went back to what they knew farming romaine lettuce. And years later, after they retired, they continued to have

a

small victory garden in their yard. As a child, delighted in that magical garden. Each night before dinner we'd head out to the side yard with an old metal colander. It was bent and out of shape from so many years of use. Grandpa would pick the beans, tomatoes, cucumber, Japanese eggplant and bell peppers. I would follow behind him and pick the beans lower on the pole and the tomatoes that grew on a windy vine on the ground. to Each day my grandfather would say, "You young people don't know how to pick vegetables!" And I'd automatically roll my eyes and say, "Yes, Grandpa." And this was our pattern each and every day.

CREATED VICTORY GARDENS next to their barracks. They grew cucumbers, beans, tomatoes and com supplement their camp rations.

In the garden he told me how much to water tomatoes. "Not too much so the sugar content stays high."And how to properly pick a bean. "You have to pinch it like this at the top and pull." He spoke a little about the war and what it was like growing vegetables in camp. He also told me about how some men would sneak out of the camp to fish for trout and then sneak back in. And how there wasn't a lot of food in

camp on the whole. It was cold in the Sierra Nevada in the winter and this area is known for extreme high winds. There were holes in the barracks, so the men would do their best to stuff them with straw. They were fed spoiled fish and once realized they were drinking water that came downstream from where a dead cow lay. Times were tough. One man they knew went fishing and disappeared. And when my grandparents were released, they called on the phone to a hotel in downtown Los Angeles. My grandfather, who spoke English perfectly with no accent, was told to come down as they had several rooms available. When they arrived, the hotel clerk took one look at them and said, "We have no rooms available." My grandparents experienced a lot of anti-Japanese sentiment after the war, but never seemed to hold a grudge. Grandpa never spoke badly about it. He just told me these stories when we were picking vegetables. In fact, I never heard him say a bad word about what happened at all. But, this was my grandfather and he never spoke badly about anyone. He always seemed to be able to move on peacefully from any situation with grace. When I visited them each summer, everyday we ate freshly picked vegetables from the garden. As a child, I guess I took it for granted. And little did I know at the time that this was planting knowledge about gardening into my tender, young mind. Flash forward so many years later, I'm a strong advocate of growing your own vegetables and fruits. In fact, there are many of this generation that are going back to a simpler time and having small victory gardens, even in the city. You'd be surprised at how much food even a small piece of land will yield. And there are many benefits from growing your own food in a small garden. Gardening can save you money by growing much of what you eat. Food is expensive because of an increase in gas and oil prices. How does this correlate to what you eat? Most of what you eat isn't even grown in your state. In fact, it is often shipped from all over the country. And studies show that up to 40 percent of food is thrown away due to spoilage even before it gets to the consumer. Growing your own food cuts out the middleman such as the truck driver, gas company, farmer and grocery store. And there is also a sense of personal gratification that you get from growing your own food. You have the satisfaction knowing that you didn't use GMO seeds and you grew organically without pesticides. And there is nothing like walking out your back door, picking a few ears of corn, and boiling them in a pot. On the table from the garden in 30 minutes flat, corn never tasted so good!

GREEN ISSUE

As my grandfather once taught me about raising food, it is important to educate the newest generation that food doesn't originally come in packages and boxes. Many children assume food is in its natural state in the grocery store! Teach them that a carrot and potato grow underground and that tomatoes are really fruits. They will grow up with a newfound respect for nature and for the foods we eat. Today, my partner and I have a small garden and we grow vegetables. There is so much to marvel at each season! I can't tell you how many people come over and are excited about seeing watermelon grow on a vine. And how many have never seen an eggplant before. And in the evening when we pick beans, tomatoes and bell peppers I'm reminded of my grandpa taking our little colander to the side yard to pick something for dinner. My grandfather lived to the ripe old age of 88. He had many experiences throughout his life, some good and some challenging. If I could sum up what I learned from our talks in the vegetable garden I would say that happiness is the simple things in life and spending as much time as you can with the people you love is what counts. Live simply. Time somehow flies by quickly and we are often pre-occupied with things that seem so important at the time, but are really not. Fame, money, success and what others think of us are really not what life is about. Perhaps life can be as simple as: Help the environment, save money, increase your independence and bond with your family by growing your own victory garden today.

JOANNA KRUPA needs no introduction. After mavin g to Los Angeles in her early 20s,Joanna hasn't stopped pursuing her career. She always knew what she wanted and always believed in herself I remember her from her first modeling jobs in Los Angeles,

EVERYONE WAS TALKING ABOUT HOW BEAUTIFUL SHE WAS. Even my best friend at that time came home one day and told me she saw the most beautiliu girl in the world.

THAT GIRL WAS JOANNA. Written by Katarina Van Derham went by, Joanna kept climbing the ladder of show business and today I can say that all her hard work paid off. Now, living in the success she as always envisioned, she loves to pursue her other passion, a passion for animals . Her PETA campaigns are not the only ones that strike that attention. Joanna founded her own charity organization, "Angels For Animals", and she always makes time to support and bring attention to other people's causes .

AS 'tears

I couldn't imagine a better fit for our Green Issue cover. Joanna earned her place and we are honored to celebrate this golden girl in our current issue. You are a passionate animal activist. What is one issue regarding animals which bothers you most in the world? All animal cruelty bothers me very much. I can't believe with all of the knowledge and awareness that is out there people continue to support these cruel actions all because of greed and profit. What makes me really angry is the Yulin dog festival in China, where each year they torture, beat, skin alive, boil, and steal dogs and cats from their homes. These people are monsters and shouldn't be walking the streets of this Earth . It 's beyond disturbing that any person could look at this, support it, and think it is okay. In addition to helping animals, you are also interested in the environment. What is your favorite organic company? I am all about being organic and eating organic because we are what we eat. One of my favorite companies is Amy's because they have the most amazing delicious vegan pizzas and lasagna and are super healthy at the same time . Is there a specific person or organization that initially inspired you to be environmentally conscious? The thing that inspired me is the reality of what's happening on the planet. Human beings have hurt this planet so much. This has led to global warming. That is why I want to help as much as I can. Obviously nobody's perfect, but I do one thing at a time. I make sure to recycle and save electricity. Also, I'm trying to save

water, especially in Los Angeles , since now we are now in a horrific drought. So I try to use water as little as possible. I also donate my old clothes. I try to use paper bags rather than plastic. These are ways I try to help.

If you could tell people one thing that would help animals in the world, what would it be? I would tell people to start opening their eyes to the realities of the cruelty towards animals and do something about it. Stop living in boxed up glass houses not caring about these helpless and defenseless animals. The more people spread awareness and educate others, the more chances these animals have for the future. There is no reason animals should endure the pain and suffering they do from animal testing. Now there are alternatives that are less expensive than animal testing. Everyday I wake up to tweets on Instagram and Facebook, posts from my fans about these horrifying things and it really breaks my heart how people can be so evil. Circuses, zoos, Sea World , dogs and cats neglected at shelters, skinning them alive for fur, poaching rhinos , killing dolphins in Japan , my list can go on and on. I was born with a good heart and my parents raised me to be a good human being and not to hurt others. That's why I can't even relate to anyone having the thought of hurting a living thing. To me those are not people and not part of humanity, but absolutely evil souls on this planet that don't belong here.

We know you don't wear fur. This is still a big issue in the fashion industry. Is there a designer you absolutely love that uses alternatives to real fur in their fashion? I don't like faux fur as I think it still gives the wrong message since it is hard to tell the difference between real and fake nowadays. The faux fur looks so much like real fur and that can confuse a person thinking it is real and promoting wearing fur, so I don't wear any type of faux fur. I don't want to even promote the fake one as I don't think it is necessary. Plus, there has been research and investigations made that sometimes designers sell faux fur, but when tested it came back as real cat and dog fur. My favorite designer is Stella McCartney because she's a huge animal lover. I love her handbags because they're all vegan and cruelty free. Do you have a favorite cruelty free cosmetic line? I have my own day and night cream named Cellogica that is cruelty free, as there is no need or excuse to test on poor, innocent animals for cosmetics. People are so educated and informed about the cruelty that goes on in labs that test on animals. I am shocked there are still companies that promote cruelty when there are so many alternative and less expensive ways to test than on animals. You are pescatarian. Would you consider switching to a completely plant based diet? Yes, and I am eating less and less fish and more vegan meals. Many know you from The Real Housewives of Miami, Dancing With the Stars and Top Model Poland. What is currently going on in your career? And what can we look forward to seeing you in soon? I have 2 movies coming out. One this year called You Cant Have It, where I play the lead role as and undercover CIA agent, and one next year called The Wind of Heaven, where I play and animal activist against horse slaughter for meat.

The phone rang one spring day and it was my friend Dave Blass. We have been friends for over 20 years and our lives have crossed over multiple career paths. Dave had a proposition: "Hey, I found something interesting while reading an article on top 10 Bucket List trips to take. LET'S GO ON AN ADVENTURE TO PERU. Let's climb the Andes Mountains and see Machu Picchu. I said, "Well, I'm really busy, but yes, I think we can do this. It sounds like fun!" forward two weeks before we are ready to go. Apparently, Dave had already paid for everything without my knowledge . He called me up and said, "Doug, are you ready to go?" "Well, I didn't realize you were serious!" I said. At this point if I didn't go, it would cost me a lot in reimbursement fees. So, our adventure to Machu Picchu began.

During this time, I was wrapped up in daily life and not quite ready for the adventure of a lifetime. But I thought to myself, "When are we ever ready for the adventure of a lifetime?" Peru has an approximate population of over 30.4 million inhabitants . It is a country rich in diversity with a multi ethnic tapestry of people. Asians, Latinos, Europeans and Africans live together to create a wide diversity in cuisine, art , literature and music. Machu Picchu , discovered in 1911 by Hiram Bingham, is located in the Cusco region of Peru and is considered one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Built around 1450, it represents the Incan World at its height. Today, it is considered one of the great tourist destinations in South America. The realization that we were actually going to Machu Picchu set in. What do I need to bring? Do I need to get shots, health and air evacuation insurance? What about

phone service? OMG, what have I gotten myself into? Or better yet, what has Dave gotten me into ... again. After getting all of our essentials, off we went on our trip of a lifetime ... me cursing him the entire way. Eight hours later, our plane landed in Lima, Peru for a small layover. I recently watched a show on the world's worst prisons and Lima was being featured ... Wow, not a place I would want to get into trouble. We then headed for the city of Cusco that sits high in the Andes Mountains at 7,800 feet above sea level. It was imperative we stay in Cusco for two days prior to ourascent into Machu Picchu because we had to acclimatize to the altitude. In my opinion, two days was not enough as you could immediately feel the difference in height. We found Cusco to be a charming storybook village in what seemed to be the middle of nowhere. It is not your typical tourist town, it is an ancient city steeped in tradition. And during our 2-day stay, we had the opportunity to get a true feel for the people and the culture.

The food in Cusco was wonderfully authentic. The first must-taste dish in Peru is Aji de Gallina. The yellow aji pepper lends its color - a bright yellow hue - and its mild kick to several Peruvian dishes. Among them is a rich, velvety stew made with chicken and condensed milk. It is thickened with de-crusted white bread. There is also a vegetarian altemative with a similar flavor, the ubiquitous Papa a la Huancaina, or boiled potato with creamy yellow sauce. Pisco is a clear to amber alcoholic beverage and we drank many Pisco Sours, which we learned how to make during one of our nights on the hike. Earlier, I had purchased "Turn Right at Machi Picchu," which is a modern guide to the Incan World. The first night we ate at a restaurant recommended by the author. This had the best Aji de Gallina! Our trip consisted of a 10-day adventure through the Andes Mountains to Machu Picchu, whitch that has an elevation of 15,000 feet. During our travels, we went

Lodge, whitch is at an elevation of 12,690 feet. Exhausted but excited, we listened to a briefing by our trip leader by the fireplace, followed by aperitifs and an exquisite dinner. On our second day we hiked to Humantay Lake. One couple in our group was getting married. They asked a shaman priest to perform a blessing ceremony by the glacier lake. This religious ceremony included all of us. We folded pieces of paper that were blessed by the priest and went back to the couple. The shaman priests put candy and fiowers on top of the pieces of paper. Then, they burned them releasing them into the spirit world. At this time, a few of us decided to take a dip in the glacial lake. The guide said there is usually a contest of who could stay in the lake the longest with sub - zero degree water. One member of our group, a doctor, stayed longer than anyone else-a few minutes. We all thought we'd have to pull him out! On the third day, we crossed the Salkentay Pass, whitch is the highest point on the trek at 15,213 ft. I pride myse~ on working out every day for the last 25 years, but climbing to the top of the Salkentay Pass was an extreme challenge with the altitude. For every three steps, I would have to stop and take a breath. Being in my 50's, but still being in excellent shape, I found it to be a challenge. What a sense of accomplishment to finally reach the top! I beat Dave by a good 30 minutes: bragging rights! Based on the diversity of the group, everyone made it

From here, we could view the snowcapped mountains of Vilcabamba Range in just about every direction. Andean condors are also known to travel in this area of the range so we kept our eyes out for them. Day four found us descending into the Cloud Forest. wear good hiking shoes because you will definitely be climbing the narrow paths through the ruins.

On the fifth day we hiked along the Santa Teresa River Valley where we passed through banana, avocado and granadilla orchards. It is said that some of the best coffee in the world comes from here. On the sixth day of our hike, we were able to experience our first views of Machu Picchu from Uactapata Pass. This was a very distant, but spectacular view from the southeast. There was a clearing where we had our lunch. It was cloudy during this time, then all of a sudden the clouds cleared and we saw Machu Picchu for the first time. There were many "ooh's" and "aah'sj"; this first glimpse I will remember for a lifetime. We then made our descent to the Aobama River. Machu Picchu was just but a short distance away! After seven days of hiking, we finally reached the base

When you finally reach Machu Picchu, it is breathtaking and mind-boggling to think how this was created hundreds of years ago. Scientists have said that even by modem standards, it would be difficult to complete the task the Incans did in building Machu Picchu. Essentially, they took the top of a mountain and flattened it in order to build a series of homes with irrigation. We marveled at the Sun Temple, houses and 360-degree view of the Andes Mountains. Coming from a construction background, it is a quandary as to how they were able to create the interlocking design with the brickwork. And the sheer size of the stones that were used in this construction, based on primitive tools, is almost unbelievable if I had not seen it myself. Because of this, the govemment has begun to regulate the crowds as they are becoming too large. After retuming back to Cusco, Iasked myself, "Was it worth going on this 1O-day joumey into the Andes Mountains?" Initially, I was apprehensive in going on this tremendous trip based on timing and schedule. However, after my experience, I realized it is something only a handful of people will do in a lifetime. As we finally landed back at LAX, we grabbed our luggage, shook hands and said "see you soon!" Thank you to my dear friend, Dave Blass, for pulling me into this adventure. Everest is next!

the 1960's, Costa Rica was known as a surfing destination where packing included one backpack, a surfboard and yourself. Accommodations might be a hostel for $10.00 a night or simply sleeping on the beach. But now, Costa Rica is known as a high end, lUxury travel destination and is one of the most popular spots in the world. With its eco-friendly tourism, dense tropical jungles, nightlife, surfing, museums, shopping and fine dining, Costa Rica has just about everything to offer the discerning traveler. So, with lUxury in mind, VIVA GLAM had the opportunity to travel to this unique, exotic destination and spent a week exploring all that Costa Rica has to offer. Our first destination was Los Suenos, which is located a quick, one hour drive from San Jose the country's capital. We drove through lush, dense tropical forest as we made our way to Los Suenos. We passed tourist favorite, Jaco Beach, which is known for its party-like atmosphere, nightclubs and friendly locals. And we travelled over "Crocodile Bridge" which is a tourist favorite as several large crocodiles loom underneath and call this bridge home. Within an hour we were in gorgeous Los Suenos. We were warmly greeted by the president of

Our condominium, courtesy of HRG Real Estate Group, was situated in the heart of the Los Suenos Resort. Michael Hardy, owner of HRG Real Estate Group, explained to us that this exclusive community is within walking distance of the Beach Club as well as the marina, shops, restaurants and bars. As we walked into our condominium, we immediately noticed the high ceilings and lovely terrace that offered an ocean view as well as a view of the rainforest. We also had a state-of-the-art, gourmet kitchen! A local grocery store was only a few blocks down the road, so we had the opportunity to cook at home if we wished. Our condo had 3 roomy bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a large living/dining area and beautiful decor. This was definitely a taste of heaven! After dinner, Balinese dancers performed at the Java Bar at Four Seasons, with richly adorned costumes and a unique method of dancing. The next day, we ventured out of the resort to see ancient Hindu temples, including the Holy Water Temple and Gunung Kawi temple with natural waterfalls. We also saw spectacular rice paddy terraced fields and an authentic coffee and cacao farm, where I sampled a wide array of flavors and saw coffee being made over large open stoves. The vegan hot chocolate was the best! We then came back to the resort to enjoy a two-hour couple's chakra balancing treatment in one of the spacious spa villas. We finished the treatment with a flowing chakra massage with ylang ylang and jasmine oils, and cananga 'breath of peace' meditation. This was truly one of the most special spa experiences of my life. As I was drawn to Bali in part for the spiritual aspects, we also elected to try a traditional Hindu water purification treatment. We arranged for a driver to take us to the home and temple of Ida Resi Alit, who performs traditional Balinese Melukat, a water purification ceremony, in her village temple to help cleanse the body and mind of past karma and negativity. She was ordained as Bali's youngest High Priestess after a near death experience at a ritual ceremony, where she was revived and complete with vast previously unknown knowledge, including complete and complex Sanskrit mantras. It was a

fascinating experience to hear her chant and then purify the participants, including us, with cold water poured over our bodies until we were drenched. We finished the day by walking one mile on a very narrow path through stunning rice fields until we reached the bohemian Sari Organik restaurant, featuring a wide array of vegan and vegetarian dishes. The next day, we entered the Ubud Monkey Forest, and saw more than 30 monkeys of all shapes and sizes in the wild. Beware that the monkeys will jump on humans to obtain bananas! As I follow a vegan diet, the chef impressed me with creating special vegan dipping sauces, delicious corn fritters and a spectacular vegetable curry. The next morning, we took an hour walk along the beach just after sunrise, moving past fisherman getting ready to depart on local Balinese boats. During our last night on Bali, we visited a famous beach club Potato Head, located in Seminyak, about 15 minutes from Jimbaran Bay. Upon arriving, we were escorted down the large lawn to enjoy day beds with creative cocktails by the pool. They often have famous DJ's at Potato Head during the summer months. NATU BEAUTY Written by Elena Terrones

I never imagined a pair of brown hiking boots would be my favorite shoes. As I packed my suitcase it was HARD TO BELIEVE it belonged to me. Instead of colorful dresses and jeweled stilettos from my favorite Beverly Hills boutiques, it was full of qUick-dry shirts and hiking pants that un zipped into shorts that I purchased from REI. This was going to be a DRAMATICALLY DIFFERENT kind of trip from my previous travels so I was filled with anticipation by what I would gain from the next two weeks.

after ) I watched many nature documentaries that I became awed by the miracles of the animal kingdom. Awe led me to dream. How could I playa role in protecting these precious beings? I really craved a sense of purpose that went beyond my own physical and financial needs. I wanted to be immersed in the magic that was captured in Planet Earth and other amazing documentaries I watched. A close friend recommended I look into Earthwatch, a nonprofit organization of scientists and volun teers investigating the critical environmental issues that face our changing planet. Earthwatch offers four categories of expeditions throughout the world : ocean health, wildlife and ecosystem, archeology and culture, and climate change. I found myself torn between tracking dolphins in the Adriatic Sea, unearthing ancient history in Tuscany, researching butterflies and bees in the Himalayas, or protecting South African penguins from extinction . In the end, the penguins won me over. Surfing the web, I learned that oil spills have decimated the population of the South African penguins. Wonderful organizations including The South African Foundation for the Conservative of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) are dedicated to rectifying the problem. In 2000 a large ship spilled more than 1,300 tons of oil leading the two organizations to initiate a massive rehabilitation project, scrubbing over 20,000 oiled penguins with coarse-bristled brushes to allow them to swim and thrive again. Although the project's efforts were successful, the penguin community suffered a devastating, unexpected after-effect; the oiled seabirds were no longer able to reproduce. This is only one of many factors that affect their existence; habitat loss, fishing , and climate change are also critical threats to their survival. When I signed up for the two-week expedition, Earthwatch sent me a list of books and field guides on

penguins along with the suggestion that I watch the film March of The Penguins . My packet also included travel tips, safety precautions, and a packing checklist . Brimming with excitement and anticipation, I was ready for the journey. Once in South Africa, the expedition began with a sixty-minute ferry ride from charming Cape Town to the historical Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years before he was elected President of South Africa. Upon arrival on the island, our Earthwatch crew piled into the back of a white mini pickup truck and the leader of our group drove us past the prison, which is now a tourist destination. I was overcome by an eerie feeling as we rode past deserted warehouses, dilapidated watchtowers, underground tunnels, and shipwrecks near the shoreline. The desolate island was abandoned except for a compound of a dozen rustic homes that once housed prison sergeants - one of which would be our "home" for the next two weeks. My neighbors would include spring buck, rabbits, tortoises, incredibly noisy seagulls, and a small community of South African penguins.

The interior of the old house was barren , with minimal furniture. The walls were covered with maps and charts pertaining to penguins. We ate dinner in a cozy dining room on a penguincovered tablecloth and warmed ourselves in front of a fire in the living room at the end of the night. Mornings began at 5am. The old wooden floors creaked as we scurried around, readying ourselves for the day.

My team, consisting of seven people, was headed by a postdoctoral scientist, Sally Hofmeyr, and her dedicated, quite delightful associates Amour McCarthy, Jennifer Grigg, and Barbara Barham, all locals to the region who cooked us meals using their fam ily recipes. Also volunteering were three other American women , including a free spirited single mother, a navy veteran, and a soft-spoken but adventurous woman on her seventh Earthwatch expedition. For two weeks we bonded, working together to better understand the South African penguins on the island . We photographed penguins so they could be identified and studied. We crawled under dried shrubs, carefully pulling out furry chicks so we could measure and weigh them. We also monitored their living conditions and documented their nesting habits entering all of the information we gathered into a databank. I fell in love with the penguin chicks even though they pecked at me (and my camera) and wiggled away as I tried to measure them. They were feisty! I was moved by the way the adults raise their young as a unified couple and how they work together as a community. Watching them waddle in a group to and from the treacherous sea or diligently gathering twigs and branches to create a proper nest made me feel lucky to be alive and sharing this wonderful world with these animals. They're hard workers with a survival instinct to do whatever it takes to thrive as a species, something we as humans would do well to call upon because as Humanplanet eloquently states,

"It's through partnerships with nature that people can live on this earth without destroying it." Volunteering for Earthwatch invigorated my soul while giving me a way to playa small part in helping an adorable species survive. It also led me to the other side of our planet. Before I discovered Earthwatch, South Africa wasn 't on my radar. I wasn 't aware of the

artistic, culturally rich, politically charged energy of Cape Town, with its amazing vistas atop Lion's Head, Cape Point and Table Mountain, which is one of the seven wonders of nature. Cape Town turned out to be a playground of adventure within modern living juxtaposed by raw nature. Everything abcut this utopia inspired me to push myself to try new things. I reveled in all South Africa had to offer by ending my trip with sightseeing, skydiving, white water rafting, and breathtaking safaris. The Capetonians I met were wonderful people, kind and charming, with an affinity for Arnericans. They're quite stylish too. I felt warmly welcomed by ther hospitality and rather enjoyed their accents. It was fun making friends on the other side of the globe, yet I was also at ease in my solitude while exploring this exotic land. I grew as a person on this trip . The sense of purpose and adventure I gained from working on this project will stay with me forever. I realized how "beauty" goes beyond red lipstick or a fabulous dress. There's a different kind of radiance a person exudes through personal development and contribution to our amazing planet. Stylish clothes accentuate our natural beauty, but so do brown hiking boots, because they get you to rare adventures and amazing places l

What initially started out as a family vacation to Africa ended up as much more for VIVA GLAM SUPERMODEL, MARKETAJANSKA While visiting Tanzania, she noticed children at school doing their work on the dirt floor. She also noticed they had no basic school supphes such as pencils and erasers. Beheving that one person can start positive change, she decided to do something about it. We spoke to Marketa about her experience in Africa and what she did to improve the lives of the children she met while there. Marketa, why did you decide to go to Africa? Has it always been a place you wanted to visit? I was invited by my husband's family to go on safari in Tanzania. I was always interested in Africa, but because my modeling career never brought me there , I had never been. I really loved my experience in Tanzania and Zanzibar, and leamed so much, but that's such a small part of Africa. I also want to visit Morocco, South Africa, Egypt, and Congo. What was your first impression of the African lifestyle? It is so much different than in the United States. When we spent time in the cities of Dar EI Salam and Arusha, people were walking around everywhere. it was so crowded and busy. Some of the people were wearing very bright and colorful clothing, and those who were Muslim wore much more reserved clothing, like

140

tunics and head scarfs . It was a very interesting mix of people. People were very poor, but I saw so many people smiling, so they seemed happy. We went to the local markets, which were so busy and intense, it was almost overwhelming. Is there anything in particular that stood out to you? Everything about the culture stood out to me. It's so much different than any place I've ever been before. One thing that amazed me was the Maasai people . They are tribal people, living in small huts, taking care of livestock and traveling from place to place. The women wore beautiful jewelry - long necklaces and earrings with so many vibrant colors. They have such an old-fashioned lifestyle, but they are so friendly and happy. Because they live with so little, they have such great spirits.

While on your visit, you decided to help build school desks for children. What ignited this idea? When we were on safari, we stopped in a large village and visited an elementary school. After playing with the kids and giving them some school supplies, we went in one of the classrooms. I saw that there were some desks, but many children had to sit on the floor, and that thought really stayed with me. I loved being with those kids and I really wanted to help them. I asked the headmaster what these children needed, and he said "desks," so I felt like I needed to help. We were able to fund 15 more desks to seat 30 additional children. I want to do more for them if I can. Raising money can be a difficult thing to do. What was your experience with a GoFundMe campaign? It was difficult to get people involved. There are so many problems in the world that we don't know about, and if nobody sees it first-hand, it doesn't really resonate with people. GoFundMe was effective for me getting the message out there, but it's very difficult making people donate to something that they aren't seeing first-hand. Fortunately, we got pictures of children in the new desks, so I know it was worth it. We also had a few very generous donations from a few people, like yourself, and those were a huge help! How did this experience shape you as a person? It made me realize that so many people need help in developing nations, and children need an education. I think educating children is the most important thing for the future. I think that since we I"e in a wor1d where we have the ability to connect and educate through the Internet, we need to do so much more to help people in poorer countries; and it starts with education. I also saw that money doesn't buy happiness because I met so many people who had very litt~ money, but were so happy in life. In addition to being a model and actress, you are first and foremost a singer. Your hit, "I Get High" made it into the Top 10 workout tunes. You went from California beach girl to more edgy and stylish. In fact, you cut and dyed your hair recently. Do you feel this was necessary for your musical career in order to advance? I don't know if this change was necessary, but it was something I just wanted to do. I love changing. I think it's very important for artistic people to reinvent themse"es and look at themse"es in a different way. Changing your look is a great way to stay fresh and fun. If everyone stayed the same their whole I"es, we'd I"e in a pretty boring world.

FATE. I(lSMET DESTINY. Perhaps these are not everyday words for everyday use. In fact} most would say these are extraordinary words that have power. And such is it that these are the words that I use to describe VNA CLAM's relationship with

MICHAEL-BLU AND SETH LEWIS OF BLU SETH FARMS. and 8 et h, owners of Blu 8eth Farms, are known for high quality eye care products such as Rev-Eye-Visco and Citru-Arctic-Tea Rejuvenating Eye Mask. In what originally began as a business relationship several years ago has organically blossomed into something much more. And, as it is so much of the time, life's greatest lessons, inspirations and miracles come from the positive people that are around you.

Michae-Bu

Powerful energy radiates off both Michael-Blu and 8eth, and it is an energy you feel upon first meeting them. It is also important to note here that they are very real. Genuine people are hard to come by, folks. And genuine means wearing their hearts on their sleeves and sometimes showing imperfections. I tend to respect people who allow others to see their flaws. Perfection equals not real, you see. And in my book, you score higher if you are not afraid to show this. Little did I know upon meeting them how much we would all affect each other's lives. And little did I understand in what subtle ways the Universe would use each of us to pass blessings back and forth. At this point, you are probably asking, "What in the world are you talking about?" Well, let me start at the beginning. Actually, this journey really starts as far back as 1993, so let me instead start this story a few months ago ... Michael-Blu had invited us to celebrate his birthday in Hollywood. Good food, fun and festivities are always expected. I mean, we can have a great time together at a frozen yogurt stand! But little did I know that tonight we would be planting a seed in Michael-Blu's mind that would have tremendous impact. And, much later, he would also be planting positive miracles in our lives as well. He invited several people to come to the party. But, in the end, due to traffic, previous commitments, etc. we were the only ones there. Instead of it being a letdown, it was the Universe allowing us time and space for

miracles to occur. By being a smaller crowd of five, we were able to connect on a level that we almost certainly would not have been able to if there were more people. Instead of superficial talk, we spoke and listened from the heart. I am reminded in this situation how "real" talk is always a blessing never to be underestimated. We spoke about Michael-Blu's difficulty with his family. How he was estranged from them. How disappointed his parents and brother were of him. And we heard the pain in the voice of someone who just wanted to be loved and accepted by his family and whose family was just unable to do so. It was painful to hear. After all, we have all had situations in our lives of rejection from those we love. We spoke about being able to change ourselves, but we are not responsible or capable of changing those around us. And how we must have the strength to remove ourselves from unhealthy sit u a t ion s . And, most importantly, we have to love ourselves as well as the ones who are hurting us.

no one knew immediately what was wrong with me. I had brain scans and went on different medicines and no one could figure it out. Finally, I was sent to Dr. W. King Engle, who was the head of the Neuromuscular Center at USC. He thought he knew what it was and ordered a bunch of tests, a spinal tap and a 3" biopsy on my leg muscle. I also had nerve conduction tests on the same day. It was an excruciating ordeal but waiting for the results was worse. After about three weeks I was told I had an auto immune neuromuscular disease and I would have to begin blood infusion therapy twice a week. This treatment is called IVIG. IVIG defuses platelets that go directly to your immune system to attack your nerves." After about a month of his IVIG treatments, MichaelBlu started to feel good again. But he realized it was going to be a lifelong situation. Yes, it did allow him to feel good, but he had to be dependent on IVIG. It was his life support. Without it, he couldn't even wash or dry his hair. And his fingertips and feet felt numb all of the time. His IVIG treatment is a 6 hour long process. A home nurse came to Michael-Blu's house at midnight and administered his regimen. I was shocked at what I was hearing as I had never heard about Michael-Blu's illness before. I marveled at what he had to struggle with each and everyday. And yet, he always had a smile and was in good spirits when I saw him. Hewent on to tell me that a little over a year ago, he and Seth decided to change their diets and lead a healthy lifestyle with organic food and Super Smartbursts. "What is a Super Smartburst?" I asked. Michael-Blu and Seth refer to this journey of self-discovery and entire positive experience as "Super Smartburst". It represents the raw fruits and vegetables followed by exercise and reading for knowledge. Michael said it was like they opened themselves up and got a huge burst of answers, smartness, knowledge, direction, guidance, and most importantly, enlightenment! Super Smartburst started them on a path to nature, to the earth and what God intended for them to be nourished with, both mentally and physically: a burst of enlightenment. By listening to several physicians and by educating himself, Michael-Blu discovered that his disease attacks the sheath that wraps around the nerves in the body. This disease eats the wraps and then starts to attack the nerves. The result is a sense of false signals to the sensory and motor nerves and then to the brain. Michael-Blu continued to do Super Smartbursts for a year and a half and miraculously started to get some

of his reflexes back. He and Seth then decided to start working out with a trainer and dedicated themselves to undergo a body transformation and a lifestyle of health and wellness. In fact, one day Michael-Blu was watching an inspirational video by trainer Greg Plitt, and he believes that was a life altering moment. Since then, he and Seth have been working out with personal trainer Will Hamilton 4 times a week for the past year and began feeling different, stronger and overall really great.

He went on

Mind you, this didn't happen to tell me that a little over a overnight. Rather, this year ago, has been a he and Seth decided to journey of baby steps. change their diets and lead a This has been a journey of healthy lifestyle eating healthy, working out, with organic food and reading tons of books, SUPER SMARTBURSTS positive thinking, living an authentic life and being truthful with oneself. Michael-Blu believes his birthday night was a life changing moment. And it was a life altering moment that he was fully conscious of. He said, "The Universe got involved and the people that were supposed to be there that night were there. Things were said that night that changed the way I felt about myself. It is very strange and difficult to put into words, but I just felt it was important and I knew in my body that things were happening. Regarding my family, that night I decided I'm going to think about the things that I love about them. I think about the positive things, not the negative things. I also think about the times with them that I laughed and what I love about each one of them. The best thing I've learned out of this entire experience is that I keep growing as a human being and head in a positive direction. This whole journey has been so miraculous and I feel like so much information has been given to me," Michael-Blu continued with his story about his healing and said, "1 was feeling so great and so strong, a voice kept telling me that I didn't need my treatment anymore. I really felt different. Seth and I took a road trip to Denver a few months ago and I started to know something was happening within me physically. I could

literally feel a shift in me. It was very conscious. I told Seth that I was being healed because I could feel it in my nerves, I could literally feel my nerves and muscles healing themselves. I wasn't even able to sleep and this lasted over two weeks . When we got home I made an appointment with my neurologist, Dr. Shalini Mahajans, who has since taken over as director of the Neuromuscular Center at USC, to find out what was going on . At the appointment she asked to do a nerve conduction test. This test involves a needle going into your muscle that allows the doctor to see damage and how your nerves are responding to electrical current. I was actually excited about this because it was going to be proof that something was happening inside of me. I made a decision then to taper off my treatments because I felt like I didn't need them . I went down to once a week and felt okay. Then every other week. Then none. An inner voice also told me to call my psychiatrist, Dr. Joseph Haraszti, to get a blood test. You see, I've been on heavy medications for a long time, about 20 years." "What do you consider heavy?" I asked . He went on to tell me he had been on as many as 8 different medications plus

146

the IVIG treatments twice a week. "I had a lot of doctors and a lot of medications to keep me functioning. This was my life support. Well, my psychiatrist told me according to my blood work, I wasn't even taking my medications! I told him I was . He said the medications aren't even showing up in your blood work! My body was already cleaning itself. I decided to stop taking all medications. My doctor suggested tapering off of them for health reasons and I agreed. Next, I went back to the neurologist for my test results. She said, 'I'm going to tell you something, if I spoke to any expert here and showed them your results, they would never believe you had a neuromuscular disease. In fact, you surpassed every test and you have no nerve or muscle damage left. I don't even know what to say and this is every doctor's dream for this to happen.' I told her, 'I wish you could feel what I feel right now.' I knew already that this was true. I knew what was happening. Now I had proof from two doctors that something miraculous was happening to me. I was being healed. I have to add and make it really clear that I'm in no way against doctors or medicine, I believe that both saved my life and allowed me to go through this process. I'm a true testament to the brilliance and humanity of my doctors. They encouraged me to get well and created a space for a miracle to manifest. Through this journey that I have been on, information and healing

has been coming to me in my dreams, while I have been consciously awake, and I also believe things have been spoken to me on purpose. I believe what healed me was mentally and physically being in a total truthful state, a positive outlook on life, positive thinking on the whole and manifesting. I now strongly believe that we can not be whole and completely healthy if we are living untrue and against nature. We must begin to live in a state of complete honesty to be in top form, mentally and physically. I would find myself on the elliptical machine running and would be so grateful for my clean bill of health. In fact, all of my prayers for my entire life over the past year have turned into gratitude. I really only have gratitude. I feel so filled with so many amazing people and things I have to be grateful for. And this in turn has filled me with so much love for others. I know the human heart and I know how it works and feels. I know what it is to be rejected and to be in despair, I also know what it is to be loved and to love. And I now know how important it is to tell people how you feel about them and how empowering this simple gesture is. You can change a person's life by the simplest thing. In fact, you have to be careful about what you say to people. Because words are powerful and what you say can be life-altering in a good or bad way." I agreed with Michael-Blu and something in what he had just said made me think to ask how he knew that words held such power. He said, "Let's go back 17 years. I was living in NYC and pursuing a career in acting and singing. I had just finished recording an album and had a super manager. I can look back and I know exactly what was going on during this time.

I'm talking about positive thinking and manifesting miracles in your life. Believe me, this is real and I know we are all manifesting our lives from the day we are born to the day we die. You have the power to manifest crap or great things! Once you realize this and have control over it, you can put positive things in your life. I can look back on this time in my life, and at this time I believed in myself so much and had so many positive people around me that wanted only the best for me. I know from this time too how powerful words are. The spoken word is so powerful in both a negative and positive way. Sometimes I think that people are not conscious of how

powerful words are. I am reminded of a phrase by the poet Maya Angelou: 'You might not remember what someone said to you, but you will never forget the way they made you feel.' I was on top of the world and one person said something so horrible and devastating to me that it crushed my spirit completely, I let it infect my life and it ruined my self -confidence. It affected me so deeply that it was like they stuck a knife into me and killed me. Remember, I was on a positive path and I believed in myself. I felt it was ripped from me and I actually ended up in a hospital with a nervous breakdown for 2 months! Of course, this breakdown didn't happen overnight. It occurred over the course of a few months as I let that infection ruin my self confidence. My manger saw it happening. I was suicidal and almost killed myself. I tokJ my manager I needed help." I was surprised by this revelation, but urged him to go on. Michael, said "my manager Tony Coelho, who became my best fr8nd, helped me. He was able to get

My manager Tony Coelho, who became my best friend, helped me. me into Silver Hill in New Canaan, CT. I stayed at Silver Hill for 2 months. I got put on heavy medications while there. I lost my spirit and succumbed to defeats and bsing myself. I took the medicatbn they gave me. None of my family came to be there with me. Maybe this is because some people have such a hard time handling the truth. Tony, however, was there and came twice a week to see me. He sent me stuff in the mail to cheer me up. He was there for me then and he saved my life. He has been there ever since. His words and actions changed my life forever." Michael-Blu said he got out of Silver Hill 2 months later. Reflecting on his experience there, he said, "1 got out of the hospital and looking back on everything, I believe when you are not living an authentic, true life for yourself, it is detrimental to your health. I feel like it was what made me sick. Because all of the time I was trying to be what everyone wanted me to be. I wasn't being truthful to myself about who I was. Regarding what happened with my parents, I now feel set free as a human being. Sometimes as painful as it is, you just have to separate yourself from negativity. I'm accepting myself and living a truthful life. And because of this, my I~e has changed in miraculous ways.

We are there for each other in an amazing way, and there is a bionk:: strength and super force in our partnership. We're together!" I was completely awe-struck at the end of Michael-Blu's story. I also had the blessing of reading some of his journal entr8s during ht3 miraculous journey: "To my awesome Facebook family, I've been on ... and I'm still on the most fantastic physical and spiritual journey of my life.. growing, learning and receiving unbel8vable blessings. Like many of us, others have been inspired by Michael-Blu's writings on social networking about his miraculous life journey. One reader wrote: "Dear Michael-Blu, you have Radiant Energy! You are filled with wise words, which never lack positivism. You truly are a ray of sunshine and consistently allow yourself to feed off of the wonderful people in your life and them doing so in return . In order to receive warmth, you not only understand but believe that you must give it out as well. However, your insight and depth perception do not go unnoticed. Being in your presence and discussing the more consequential aspects of life travel through ears as well as minds, leaving a lasting impression on the way everyone should see the world with hopeful hearts and big eyes. Your energy provides an essential balance to the world, and don't you forget it! FACEBOOK Friend." And finally, Michael-Blu offers some words of wisdom from a piece that he deeply identifies with by Charlie Chaplin whitch is meant to be shared and will hopefully leave you with encouragement , wisdom , blessings , power to face life's challenges and to give hope in the face of adversity: "As I began to love myself I found that anguish and emotional suffering are only warning signs that I was living against my own truth . Today, I know, this is 'AUTHENTICITY' . As I began to love myself I understood how much it can offend somebody. As I try to force my desires on this person, even though I knew the time was not right and the person was not ready for it, and even though this person was me. Today I call it 'RESPECT' . As I began to love myself I stopped craving for a different life, and I could see that everything that surrounded me was inviting me to grow. Today I call it 'MATURITY' . As I began to love myself I understood that at any circumstance, I am in the right place at the right time, and everything happens at the exactly right moment. So I could be calm . Today I call it 'SELF-CONFIDENCE' .

As I began to love myself I quit stealing my own time, and I stopped designing huge projects for the future. Today, I only do what brings me joy and happiness, things I love to do and that make my heart cheer, and I do them in my own way and in my own rhythm. Today I call it 'SIMPLICITY' . As I began to love myself I freed myself of anything that is no good for my health-food, people, things, situations, and everything that drew me down and away from myself. At first I called this attitude a healthy egoism . Today I know it is 'LOVE OF ONESELF' . As I began to love myself I quit trying to always be right, and ever since I was wrong less of the time. Today I discovered that is 'MODESTY' . As I began to love myself I refused to go on living in the past and worry about the future . Now, I only live for the moment, where EVERYTHING is happening . Today I live each day, day by day, and I call it 'FULFILLMENT' . As I began to love myself I recognized that my mind can disturb me and it can make me sick. But As I connected it to my heart, my mind became a valuable ally. Today I call this connection 'WISDOM OF THE HEART'. We no longer need to fear arguments, confrontations or any kind of problems with ourselves or others . Even stars collide, and out of their crashing new worlds are born . Today I know THAT IS 'LIFE'!" If I could sum up what I learned from Michael-Blu during his miraculous journey, I think it would be: Remember, everybody has the ability to affect someone in the world . Words have power, both for positivity and negativity. And forgive everyone, even those who you have difficulties with , from the heart . Live truthfully and live honestly with yourself above all. And most importantly, love, love, love ... And MichaelBlu, we love you .

A CHALLENGE: Expand Your Family Written by Bo L. Arnold.

THE "TYPICAL" FAMILY - AN ARCHAIC IDEA Her pg.rents were killed in a car crash in Africa while working as missionaries. This left my dear friend Caroline and her brother, Michael, in a predicament no parents. So, Caroline's aunt (mother's sister) and uncle adopted the young children and raised them as their own. In addition to their aunt and uncle's daughter, JoAnn, this became Caroline and Mike's family.

has less and less application to real life. Of course, many people still hold onto the belief of the archaic definition of family. To each their own, which means each person's definition of family applies only to that person and no one else.

THE DOG WALKING FAMILY

The ideas of family have changed over the last 60 years. For eons, the typical family was defined as a father, a mother and a son. Later it grew to a father, a mother and children; 2.2 children, as the statistics suggested. In the last six decades, however, the typical family began looking not so typical.

Most every evening I hear a dog barking at my front door. It's Simon. He shows up with his dog mom, Kathy, and lets me know he is here to pick me up for our walk. We head out and pick up Aunt Katina and Pushpa, both of whom live across the street from me. Aunt Katina and Uncle Mario, her husband, are Greek - and they are not my real aunt and uncle, but I love them as if they were. Pushpa is from India. As we begin our walk, we run into Le from China and her fourlegged kids, Mae-Ling and Ginger. Together, we walk loops around the neighborhood, laughing, checking on health issues and watching the cute things the dogs do. This is our dog walking family.

Research shows that in 1970, 75% of all households had both parents living with children. By the year 2000, that number dropped to 51 %. Today, families can hold any configuration. The definition of the typical family

Our dog walking family is diverse and no one is related by blood, but it is still our family. Of course, most families begin with two people who are not related by blood and grow from there. Like families, our dog

In 1970, my family consisted of a mother, a father and three kids, including me. But after a divorce, we ended the 70's with a mother and three kids. Did that mean we weren't a family anymore? Hardly, but it didn't match the old definition of family.

Your Thoughts' Are They Hurting You or Healing You? Written by Bo L. Arnold.

THINIZING CREATES FEELING Every time I feel bad about myself, someone else or something else, I feel it in my body and it doesn't feel good. For instance, when someone I dated for six years broke up with me for the third and final time, I thought no one would ever love me again. I felt defeated, useless and hopeless. The deep-rooted pain of those thoughts resonated through every cell of my body. My stomach was upset, my legs were weak and my head hurt. I was tired and I lost my motivation for everything except walking the dogs. But, through my pain and suffering I realized something that set me on a course of continual life changes that would bring me closer to reality and closer to love; it was only my thoughts creating my physical discomfort, nothing else. That led me to the even greater realization that I don't have to participate in those thoughts. They can play in my mind without me ever getting involved with them. Your life changes drastically when you are no longer a slave to what you think. That's been my experience.

154

WWWVIVAGLAMMAGAZINE.COM

Beliefs create thoughts and thoughts create feelings. Our foundation belief, the one we were all taught when we were growing up and one that is reinforced in our mind throughout our lifetime is, "I'm not good enough." Our thoughts about ourselves mirror this belief, as we often tend to think things that are not supportive or loving towards us. Below are some examples of the kinds of thoughts that arise from this belief; so many of us think the same things about ourselves. • • • • • • • • •

Everyone else always wins. I'll never meet a nice person to date. Everyone else understands it. Why can't I get it? She never has anything go wrong in her life. Why is my life so messed up compared to hers? I'm so stupid. I'm too fat. I'm not young enough. I'm not pretty enough. No matter what I do, it's never enough.

With such beliefs and thoughts as our foundation for how we see ourselves and the world, we fight an uphill battle in order to be good enough and to see others the same way. But the battle isn't necessary because the belief is a lie. We have been tricked into thinking we are less than or lacking in many ways, but that is simply not true. There is nothing wrong with any of us no matter how much evidence our minds want to show us to the contrary. When we are open to the truth about our beliefs, we have the opportunity to uncover them and the accompanying thoughts and emotions. We can do this by listening to our body, by checking how we feel inside and paying attention to what hurts. This is one way we can see how our thoughts affect us physically. This is an important step in releasing what needs to be released in order to heal all parts of our lives.

YOUR BODY FEELS YOUR THOUGHTS Thoughts release electro-chemical signals in the brain and those signals are what we feel in our body. It is often called the body-mind connection or psychoneuroimmunology. It has also been shown that particular thoughts tend to settle in certain places

the Big 5, as I call them, test the resources of your body, often to the point of failure. Many people suffer from digestive issues, back pain, leg pain, headaches and more. The next time you get angry or are on the blaming bandwagon, take note of how your body feels. Which parts of your body are affected? This mind-body connection is a key to healing what ails us, butwe don'tfocus on this much when we have a physical illness, though that is changing with books like You Can Heal Your Ufe (Hay House 1984) by Louise Hay and Your Body Speaks Your Mind (Sounds True, April 2006) by Deb Shapiro. It is true that doctors today know that stress lowers the immune system, but I'm talking about a deep review of limiting beliefs that create the thoughts and emotions that lead to physical illness. With this level of awareness and inspection, we allow limiting beliefs to bubble to the surface. This is where we begin to see our truth. Would we dare to look? Just as thoughts can hurt us, they can also heal us. Thoughts that arise from love release completely different electro-chemical signals in the body. Notice how your body feels when you are happy, joyful, peaceful or laughing. The more you practice listening to your thoughts and being aware of how your body feels, the easier it will become. In time, you will understand

Thoughts release electro-chemical signals in the brain and those signals are what we

FEEL IN OUR BODY. within the body. For example, emotions such as anger are tied to heart disease as our "fight or flight response" is quickly activated and stress hormones, including adrenaline and cortisol, are released speeding up your heart rate and your breathing, giving you a burst of energy. Blood pressure also rises as your blood vessels constrict. With continual constriction, plaque build-up can occur - not a good situation for the heart. The bodily responses to anger are the same bodily responses that occur when you think that Black Bear is going to have you for dinner. But, most of us aren't being attacked by Black Bear; we are just reacting to our own thoughts of inadequacy. So, it's important to understand that when you blow a gasket over your partner's late work night, your sister's oversight inviting you for a girl's night out and your mother's poor eating habits all in the same day, you could be setting yourself up for heart disease. The same is true for resentment, judgment, guilt and blame. All thoughts and emotions associated with

this sacred connection. Awareness of the mind-body connection creates the space for something other than thoughts to arise, and that something is truth. Truth is the same as self -love.

OPPORTUNITY FOR HEALING It is easy to blame your partner for saying something that made you feel angry, sad, insecure or unloved. But, the truth is, you are merely reacting to your belief about yourself - the belief that you are not good enough. All reactions that invoke the Big 5 are always about you and what you think about you. In this state of mind, when your partner is busy, you might think they aren't acting lovingly toward you. Your mind may take that and tell you they must be having an affair, that they aren't attracted to you anymore or that everything else is more important than you. But, these are all just thoughts. Your mind took a situation and added the lack filter to it that then made you unhappy, afraid, angry, resentful and so on.

The awareness of this is not so you blame yourself or feel bad, as if you are hurting yourself with your thoughts. That is just more thinking - more mind. The awareness is merely to see the connection between your beliefs, thoughts, emotions and physical discomforts. This creates space that can provide healing from the way we have been taught to think. The other major opportunity here is to realize that we don't love ourselves due to our training. Many of us don't realize we don't love ourselves so this may be a lot to take in, but if you observe your thoughts about yourself or you feel the discomfort in the body, you can gain a sense of this connection. This brings the awareness of your beliefs and thoughts to the surface where they can be examined and transformed. The examination is up to you; the transformation is not. Transformation happens in the way that provides you with the most meaningful experience. The mind is not in control of this - your divine nature, or your true self, is.

So now what? Nothing. There is nothing to do. There is only awareness. The rest will take care of itself. The important point is to understand that your thoughts affect your health. You can experience this by being aware of how your body feels and then examining the thoughts that are happening simultaneously, or you can observe your thoughts and become aware of how they make your body feel. Whatever works for you is all that matters - there is no right or wrong. We have to realize that our thoughts create emergencies and critical problems that don't deserve the level of attention and adrenaline we give to them. The anger, resentment and other similar reactive emotions are based on our fears about ourselves. Nothing is really wrong. Nothing is truly lacking. The result of this awareness is a space between thoughts and the reality of love - the reality that you are not lacking anything. This is where self-love has the opportunity to arise so you can now experience that. This is where healing happens.
