I don’t even know how but 2016 lurked up on us, and new opportunities came along with it. For me personally, 2015 was one of the most amazing years, and I knew then that 2016 would bring some major positive changes for both VIVA GLAM and myself.
You
might have already noticed that I love to travel. Last year I visited some incredible places all over the world: Sardinia, France, England, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Hawaii. To me, traveling is one of the best things that you can do, and I believe everyone should do it if they can. Every time I go somewhere, I grow culturally, try new foods, meet interesting people … and even turn a few vegan (ha-ha). Our world is so beautiful and I just love taking it all in. This year VIVA GLAM is ready to go full throttle. With Gwendalyn Augustine taking over my position as Editor-in-Chief, I will be able to focus on getting you more compelling features, gorgeous pictorials, and inspirational stories. I met Gwen years ago when she worked for a different magazine and got to see her work on many occasions. I remember her always being very straightforward, hard working, and having an honest approach to all that she did. Just like me. I knew she would be a perfect fit for this publication, and so I was super thrilled when she accepted my offer and started working for VIVA GLAM right away. Gwen and I created this issue together. Since this is the ‘EDITOR’S ISSUE’ and I just turned the big “40,” we decided to put me on the cover. Hopefully, as you turn the pages, you’ll become inspired by many of our features; everything from the new Glamarella Couture campaign and Holley’s fashion pictorial ‘Mad Hatter’’, to our beauty finds and how to detox …. If you have a favorite feature, let us know on Twitter or Instagram. We’d love to know. Also make sure to follow Gwen on her new instagram as well, @vivaglammagaine. So go ahead and enjoy our ‘EDITOR’S ISSUE’ and I hope you are already having an incredible 2016! Katarina Van Derham

New Technique “Strobing” Gives You a Slimmer Face and Enhanced Features!
EDITOR’S ISSUE
15
“What is ‘strobing’ and how do I achieve this new look?” This is a question on the minds of many women today.
St ro bing is a brand new t ec h ni q ue
that makes your face look slimmer and also enhances your features by using highlighter. This is a quick and easy look to achieve and is also inexpensive!
Strobing basically mimics the look you get when light hits your face. Your face looks more luminous by applying highlighter in the correct places. This usually only takes a few minutes during your usual makeup routine. Simply apply highlighter where you think light naturally hits your face, such as on top of the cheekbones, down the nose, and on the Cupid’s bow. Don’t apply too much or your face can look shiny, rather than sculpted.
16
www.vivaglammagazine.com
An ideal highlighter to use is Charlotte Tilbury’s Wonderglow, a beauty primer used to enhance the luminosity of your skin. This also creates a light and radiant finish that is dewy and fresh, not heavy and cakey.
Photographer: Sarah Orbanic Model: Jade Marie
Beauty experts advise to make certain you don’t use strobing as a concealer as it enhances features; it does not hide them. So for that gorgeous glow that is both inexpensive and quick, try strobing with a highlighter, illuminating face powder, or beauty primer!

10 Quick and Written by VIVA GLAM
Easy Ways to Achieve a
Seductive Look Seduction is all about the
way you feel. Whether it is sexy, beautiful, playful, alluring, mysterious, or all of the above, seduction begins in the mind and is enhanced by the way we look. Our appearance makes us more confident and, therefore, sexier. And remember, an attractive, sexy woman is one of the most powerful creatures on the planet. Here are some simple tips on how to become the most beautiful seductress any man has ever laid eyes on! 18
www.vivaglammagazine.com
Enhance Your Cleavage
Enhance, but don’t overdo your cleavage. Showing less is more. A subtle show of cleavage is more beautiful and less cheap looking. Try layering a little camisole underneath a long sleeved top for a sophisticated, yet sexy look. If you are not naturally endowed, try a good bra that enhances your natural shape or even a push-up. And adding shimmer cream to your cleavage is oh so enticing!
Wear Your Hair Down
In addition to having big, sexy hair, a recent poll showed that men overwhelmingly preferred women with long hair that is worn down, not up. So, think Raquel Welch in One Million Years BC and let it all hang loose. Hair that is beachy and natural is attractive to men; so don’t worry about having to have “perfect” hair all the time. Rather, let it loose and let it be sexy!
Feminine, not Masculine
No matter how in style oversized jeans and sweats are, never underestimate the power of a feminine dress. Men are attracted to lace and romantic styles that are timeless. Sophisticated dresses are fun and flirty, but remember, think romance, femininity, and the anticipation of what’s next!
Pouty Lips Remember Brigitte Bardot in And God Created Woman? Her pouty lips sent many men clamoring for her affection. Use a peach colored, matte lip color with a nude lip liner to achieve this beauty standard. Make your lips looks full and plump. Combine this with that smoky eye and you will be irresistible!

Seductive Look
The Higher the Heels the Better
Yes, everyone knows that high heels can be a pain sometimes, especially if walking in them all night long. However, studies show that heels make a woman more appealing to a man. Why? They change the way you walk, and they also change your posture. Wearing heels makes the breasts jut forward, the buttocks more round, and the hips sway. You also look taller and thinner, so what’s not to like? Don’t forget your heels on that special night!
Healthy Hair is Shiny Hair
A large part of attraction is looking at a potential mate and sizing up his or her health and vitality. We may not know it, but when we look at someone, we are judging them. Healthy hair is shiny hair. And shiny hair is attractive. So, seduce him with hair that is glossy and healthylooking. Don’t forget to deep condition the night before. And apply a laminate to make hair it’s shiniest! You’ll radiate and he’ll be absolutely mesmerized!
It’s All About the Eyes
Seduction usually begins in the eyes. It is a quick look, a gaze, or a stare that attracts someone to you. And did you know that large eyes, full lips, and bosom are signs of youth and fertility? So play up your eyes with a smoky look by using brown eye shadows, liner, mascara and a full set of lashes! We recommend KATLash D-Wispy for that doe-eyed effect! www.kvdbeauty.com
20
www.vivaglammagazine.com
Red is the color of Desire Did you know that in a recent study, the color most closely related to desire is red? When women wore red, men viewed them as most sexually desirable. So don’t be afraid to wear a vermillion red dress or sophisticated red lipstick on a date tonight. Red is bold and will get you the attention you deserve!
The Seduction of Scent
Did you know that fragrance heightens a man’s sexuality? And that scent increases a man’s magnetism towards a woman? Also, a recent study showed that women who wear the scents of grapefruit and strawberry are perceived as five years younger! So don’t forget to spritz on your favorite perfume before meeting your man. Simple scents are most identifiable by men, such as vanilla, lavender, or rose. We recommend Wildfox’s new Eau de Parfum that is a bouquet of warm honey and musk! www.wildfox.com
Big, Sexy Hair Everyone loves big, sexy hair, and if you’ve got it, flaunt it. Hair has been used in seduction for centuries from the Veronica Lake’s peek-a-boo look to Lady Godiva’s long golden locks. Remember, hair is your greatest accessory. Extensions are a great way to boost your look, and every girl should own at least one set of high-quality hair extensions. We recommend Cashmere Hair! www.cashmerehairextensions.com

Increase Your Beauty by Intake Did you know the average American eats 130 lbs. of added sugar in their diet each year? As you can see, many of us love the taste of sugar. And while eating sugar in moderation is not bad for us, too much of this sweet treat can cause several beauty concerns. But, by limiting sugar intake on a daily basis, you can boost your beauty!
L
essening sugar intake not only slims down your waist, it also helps to thicken your hair. Too much sugar causes a spike in blood glucose that can change your hormones. This, in turn, will turn hair lifeless and dull. However, by eating less sweets, this effect is reversible and your hair will thicken again. Sugar also causes inflammation in the body, especially of the skin. Because sugar is highly acidic it can cause breakouts as well. However, by eating fresh fruit and natural sugar substitutes such as Stevia and honey, you can minimize breakouts. By consuming too much sugar, you can build a resistance to insulin, which in turn, can cause excessive hair growth in women. Once again, this is reversible, so by cutting down on sugar, you will lessen the amount of hair on your face, chest and back. Sweets are meant to be enjoyed. However, by simply lowering sugar intake, you can increase your beauty and promote longevity and good health.

Life of the Party J
designer Heather Wells is getting ready to party. We are sitting in her tidy, feminine bedroom where we have been discussing LOVEthirteen, her unique line of bracelets, necklaces, and body chains. Littering her vanity are the standard trappings of personal party prep: curlers, mascara wands, and tubes of gloss. But there is also a candle burning next to a small figure of an angel and a picture of an attractive older woman locked in a beaming embrace with a younger Heather. ewelry

At the moment, however, all these things stand ignored; Heather has her eyes closed. She has been sitting in silent meditation for several minutes. A few bars of a familiar country tune drift in from another room. Minutes tick by. Suddenly, Heather breathes deeply and opens her hazel-green eyes, and I am treated to a radiant smile. She turns to her vanity mirror and resumes party primping. "That's my mom, our forever angel," says Heather, nodding to the picture between swipes of mascara. "She's the reason that LOVEthirteen exists." You see, LOVEthirteen is not a traditional jewelry line and Heather Wells is not a typical designer. Her

Heather hand-selects her stones and pendants for their various energetic properties: feeling unbalanced? Try her amethyst bracelets with a lotus charm. Going through a bad break-up? You need a stack of chrysocolla. Searching for the love of your life? Wear a LOVEthirteen body-chain with an opulent larimar stone centered on your heart chakra. Heathers' mission is to inspire and encourage people to live their best possible life, both through the energy of her jewelry and through philanthropy. "Philanthropy is a cornerstone of this business," says Heather, who is touching up a flawless burgundy

pucker, “And the women and men who are drawn to LOVEthirteen tend to have involvements with various charitable organizations. I think we find each other because we have similar passions for giving back.” To date, Heather has raised thousands of dollars through LOVEthirteen for a few dozen local charities, the highlights of which are over $12,000 for San Diego’s Ronald McDonald House through
Life of the Party 38

ROMP, and over $11,000 through Wine, Women and Shoes. And speaking of shoes, Heather is stepping into a sky-high pair right now, the fringe and shiny red soles complimenting her all-black ensemble. “Giving back is the reason I chose to sell my jewelry through private parties, galas, and charity functions,” she says, standing without a teeter, “that, and it gives me
the opportunity to touch people directly. I want to know what’s happening in each person’s life. I want to know their story. It’s important to me to not only hear what they want but to feel what they really need.” Perhaps that personal touch is the reason so many women from Miami to Nashville to Denver to Dallas (as well as at home in Southern California) are clamoring to meet Heather and wear her designs. That, and the positive energy the women feel when wearing LOVEthirteen. “Women leave LOVEthirteen parties feeling beautiful and empowered,” says Heather, “and they feel good knowing that they’re supporting a charity that matters to them.” Heather laughs, “Glamour and giving back, plus a party! It’s the best of all worlds!” And we are ready to party right now. But before stepping out to drive off in an SUV loaded with her creations, Heather pauses to stack on her own LOVEthirteen. Tonight’s charity, Voices for Children in San Diego, is counting on a hefty donation, so she chooses citrine stones to bring wealth and abundance, and tourmaline to help her keep a clear, grounded focus. Finally, she layers on a few pieces of labradorite. “Labradorite helps to bring serendipity, fun, and a bit of magic,” Heather says with a wink, “It is, after all, a party.”

Entrepreneur Yana Rostomyan Tells Us
Her Secrets of Success!
Lil Jewels Boutique for Children creates chic, high-end ready-to-wear
designer clothing for kids. Based in Los Angeles, designer and creator Yana Rostomyan is proof that a woman can have it all. A successful entrepreneur, businesswoman, philanthropist, and mother, she is an inspiration to everyone. We spent time with Yana asking the question, “How does she manage to do it all?” Yana, you are the owner of Lil Jewels Boutique for Children here in Los Angeles. But you also have a background in child psychology. Do you believe your education has helped you to create your business today? Yes, definitely my child psychology education is a big part of my business. I have a great amount of love towards children, and my job now involves children of all ages. It helps me to know exactly how to approach and speak to each one of
68
www.vivaglammagazine.com
them during fittings, shows, and photo shoots. Your 2016 collection is highly anticipated. Tell us about your inspirations in creating this collection. What and who were you influenced by? And what types of fabrics are you using in this year? The fabrics that I used this season are a lot of tulle, satin, French lace, hand beaded laces, and, of course, bling. Girls love them blings! My influence for this collection was a combination of things. First off, the kids have influenced me every season, working with them and dressing them. I always listen to their ideas and try to take what I learn into consideration when I’m designing. Secondly, by traveling all over the world, I pick up
a few details from everywhere I go. I believe every ethnicity, religion, and tradition should be appreciated and put together in your own way to show your vision of all beautiful things. If you were to describe your new collection in one sentence, what would it be? Chic, glamorous, and designed for the confident. What will be some of the newest trends for upcoming 2016 children’s wear? In 2016, you’ll see a lot of colors and prints. A lot of mixed fabrics and textures combined with taste. You also know the importance of giving back to the community. Tell us about your charity work and recent involvement in supporting your community. I do a lot of charity work and run a nonprofit, “For Kids by Kids”. I am involved in all other charities in my community as well. This year, we donated over $3000 of clothing from my boutique to Mattel Children’s Hospital. We donated over $4000 worth of clothes and $6000 cash to Soar LA a few months ago. We also did a Thanksgiving drive organized by Kare 4 Kids chiropractic. We are involved throughout the year with private Armenian schools in California, helping with their charity donations. These organizations help children all over the world. I’m working on something big right now with a friend. Because it’s not complete yet, I will not mention it, but I will definitely be posting and sharing the good news on all of my social media.

You live in the world of the fast-paced fashion industry, yet you are also a mother. How do you manage to run a successful business and be a supermom at the same time? And what advice do you have for our readers on keeping a balanced life as a businesswoman? Well that’s the question of all time; I get asked this almost every day. “How do you do it?” I believe I’m a natural multi-tasker. I have to be honest; it’s not easy being a businesswoman, perfectionist, and a good mom all at the same time. However, I’m very lucky to have an amazing family that really understands me and has my back at all times. I try to involve my family with my work all the time. For example, my kids participate in my shows and my shoots and my husband is always there loading, unloading, setting up, and doing basically all the hard work. So, at times when I’m working, I’m still with them. My weekends are completely blocked off for my family. That’s the number one rule of life: ‘family comes first’. I work a lot, but I also know how to manage my time. I think it is the most important thing that we all need to do since time is so precious and it’s flying by right in front of our eyes. I would advise readers to remember one thing “You can never buy back time.” Work around your kids’ schedule. Don’t let your family work around yours. I know it’s a hard
thing to do. We all have different jobs, positions, and careers; just make sure you have quality time with your kids. You don’t want to turn back one day when your kids are all grown up, and you regret the time that you never got to spend with them. Work hard during your work hours even at night when your kids are sleeping; that’s what I do. I get four hours of sleep almost every night, but I choose to do that. When I leave my store, I lock my work behind those doors, so when I get home one hundred percent of my attention is on my family. Try it, you’ll love it, your family will appreciate it. Who is the person who most greatly influenced you in your personal life and career? And how do you think they positively affected you to become who you are today? The person who influenced me the most in the business aspect and life would be my father. He’s always been a great businessman, and I’ve always looked up to him. We are two sisters and my dad always wanted a son (as most men want), so I wanted to prove to him that a woman can do as good of a job as any man. That got me working really hard, and now I am where I wanted to be. I couldn’t be prouder of myself. I’m very loyal, honest - sometimes too honest – dedicated, and a very hard worker that loves to have fun at the same time. Yana, you are an inspirational, successful business entrepreneur. What advice do you have for our readers in regards to making their own dreams become reality? Never stop dreaming and follow your dreams! All you need to do is just put your mind and time into it. Whatever you do with passion will always shine in the end. I want to thank first my family then all the believers, supporters, followers, and customers for all their support and trust. I promise I’m one person that will never let anybody down. “Wear it, Live it, Love it ...with Confidence.” If our readers want to follow your career and learn more about Lil Jewels Boutique, how would they do this? You can find me on Facebook / liljewelsboutique, Instagram @liljewelsboutique, Twitter @liljewelyana. We also have a website, liljewelsboutique.com, and are on Etsy.

These tips
Will Make Men Worship You!
86
www.vivaglammagazine.com
1.
Have confidence.
Men like women who are confident. In fact, everyone likes to be around people who are confident and who believe in themselves. Have faith in yourself and others will do the same. Whatever your decisions in life, commit to them with surety and act accordingly. People will respect you, and this includes your man.
Touch him.
Never forget that touch is important. We are human, and everyone craves the feeling of being touched. It is both comforting and nurturing. Take the time to touch your man throughout the day. It will give him that extra boost to his ego that he desires.
2.
Cleopatra had a way with men. And according to historical coins with her image on them, she was not empirically attractive. In fact, she had a hooked nose and angular face. Yet, she ruled the ancient world and had Marc Antony at her beck and call. How was this possible? She knew the tips and tricks to make men fall at her feet and adore her. Here are a few pointers on how to make your man worship the ground you walk on!
Listen.
If you didn’t hear this the first time: listen, listen, and listen some more. It is important to be a listening ear when he comes home and wants to share his day with you. Take the time to really hear his concerns, frustrations, and successes. This will only help bond the two of you closer as you will become his confidante.
3. Show him your smarts. 4. Don’t dumb yourself down for a man or to make others around you more comfortable. If you are doing this, you are in the wrong social circle. Show him how sharp and brilliant you are. Believe me, this not a turn-off, but a total turn on!

5.
Flirt.
Even though you may already be in a relationship, or even if a relationship is brand new, continue to flirt with him. This will stroke his ego a bit and will make him excited to chase you. Men love the chase as much as they love the conquest, so don’t forget, flirt every step of the way!
6.
Be busy and do your own thing.
7.
Be the gorgeous goddess he fell in love with.
If you are already in a relationship, don’t forget to show him the gorgeous, sexy woman he first laid eyes on. He will be mesmerized and fall in love with you all over again. Take the time to make yourself look amazing and he will fall adoringly at your feet.
88
www.vivaglammagazine.com
Remember, you are a busy woman with a life of your own. You have a career, friends, and family. Don’t revolve your life around him. This is very important. Take the time to do other things and your absence will only make the heart grow fonder.
.
8. Don’t be too easy to get.
This will work each and every time. Remember tip #5, men want the chase. They are biologically driven to do so. So, give them the space to do it. Don’t always be easy to get ahold of. Make them learn they have to plan in advance to get to see you. And they have to think about how to entertain you properly in order to win your time and attention. You are as precious as gold. Don’t forget it
Don’t be a damsel in distress.
9.
Basically, cut down on the drama and learn how to take care of yourself. No man wants to hear drama from the beginning of a date to the end. Save that for your girlfriends or learn how to better handle life’s challenges. We all have them, so learn how to deal with them accordingly.
Give yourself an ego boost.
When in doubt, give yourself an ego boost. You deserve it. And you deserve to be with the best man for you possible. Take the time to spoil yourself. Get a mani and pedi, facial, or massage. Treat yourself like you would like to be treated. And watch as you attract the man of your dreams!

WELLNESS Written by Candace Kita
FINANCIAL INTELIGENCE For Women I remember graduating college and wondering, “Now what?” Not only did I not know exactly what my career was going to be, I had very little understanding of managing my finances. Whether you are just starting out, building a business or in the prime of your career, it is vital you understand how to properly take care of your money long term. How much do you invest? And where? What about retirement? Between watching two financially savvy girlfriends of mine invest their money and reading Suze Orman’s “Women and Money”, I began to understand how to make my money work for me. One of the first things I learned was how to manage my own finances. Don’t rely on anyone else to do this for you. My best friend’s mother said, “The most important thing you can do in life is to learn to take care of yourself. Don’t rely on others. And don’t expect others to take care of you. Learn to do it yourself and this includes your finances.” Women often make the mistake of relinquishing financial control to the men in their lives. Whether it is a partner or family member, they let go of the financial reigns. Sometimes they do this because they are old fashioned or because they simply don’t want the responsibility. Later in life, these women are not in a good position to handle their own finances. Why? They didn’t learn about managing money at an early age and therefore don’t have the tools to do it in later life when they need it.
90
www.vivaglammagazine.com
Another important financial goal is to focus on retirement even at an early age. Make a commitment to dedicate 10% of your income to retirement starting in your 20’s. Did you know that saving 10% of your income starting in your 20’s at a $50,000 a year salary could become $2.2 million dollars at retirement? Start building your nest egg early and it will pay off for you in the long run. This may seem harsh, but don’t make emotional money mistakes. This can include a friend, loved one, or co-worker asking to borrow money from you. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen this happen to people I know and they always regret it. I’ve even made this mistake myself only to later regret it when I was never paid back. If someone can’t pay a debt off to a lender, what makes you think they can pay YOU back? Not only is this emotionally stressful, quite often it leads to the end of the friendship. It is difficult, but don’t loan out money unless you are okay with losing it for good. Along these lines, never co-sign on a loan for anyone. Co-signing basically means if, for any reason, they can’t pay back the loan, you are responsible. Unless you are willing to assume the payments for this loan and a lowered credit score, don’t do it. If you are getting married, get a prenuptial agreement. I know this may counteract romance, but marriage is a legally binding contract and must be looked upon this way. Remember, you are entering into a financially binding contract between two people. You need to protect your assets. For example, if you have been working on an IRA, make certain he is not entitled to it should you get a divorce. And this goes for all assets accrued during the course of your marriage. Once again, I have seen friends of mine loose a large amount financially because they didn’t have a prenuptial agreement in place. Also, don’t take on your spouse’s debt when you get married. Make certain both members are debt free before deciding on marriage. Don’t be afraid to talk freely about both of your financial situations before you get married. You need to know this information and it should not be considered rude or intrusive for you to ask. Make certain you know who you are
dealing with and what their financial situation is before you enter into marriage. Remember, choosing a fiscally irresponsible partner will ruin your financial well-being. Throughout my investing, I have learned to find financial friends. These are people that I have learned about investing and saving from. Whether this is a trusted friend, family member, or someone you can call a mentor, it is important to have someone to confide in and ask financial questions to. For example, one of my friends was the Valedictorian at Harvard and was a former day trader on Wall Street. I am always emailing and calling him for financial advice. He is someone I go to when I am making financial decisions and I feel confident in his advice because I have known him for almost 20 years. Also if you are in your 20’s or 30’s, keep 80% in stocks and 20% in bonds because you have time to ride out the stock swings. If you are in your 50’s and 60’s, keep 40% in bonds to help your portfolio when stocks are slumping. Don’t stop investing into your retirement accounts even if you have a difficult year. As much as you can, continue to invest yearly. And finally, have a financial nest egg for emergencies. This should be enough to cover all
This may seem harsh, but don t make emotional money mistakes. of your expenses for up to eight months in case something comes up. I know this sounds like a lot, but you don’t want to rack up massive debt, and the interest payments that go with it, because of an unexpected emergency. If you are married, put this emergency fund in a separate place so no one has access to it except for you. This is something for you to fall back on just in case you need it. By following these simple steps, you are off to a good start towards your financial destiny. Remember, you can control a secure financial future and there’s nothing more valuable than that.

What do you believe helps to develop ‘inner beauty’ and make for a complete person? I think the key in developing inner beauty is finding beauty and appreciation in the simple and small things. I grew up in a one-bedroom house with no running water, which meant no plumbing, nor bathroom. We had an outhouse right by the train tracks in a secluded area near the woods. Often we could not watch our black and white TV because the signal was not strong enough in that area. In addition, often we lost the power and had to sit in the dark with candles for days. What this experience gave me was a lot of time on my hands. Lots of time to think, observe, analyze, watch, etc… I knew every flower that grew along the train tracks. I knew all the deer that came down our yard in the middle of the night. I watched our chickens roaming around happy and then napping near my “bunker”. Beauty was everywhere, and I was a happy child. This has defined me. What also helps to develop inner beauty is love. Think, feel, speak, give, and receive love. You moved from Slovakia when you were 22 years old. What was your first job there? And what was your first job here? I worked in the marketing department of a French company in Slovakia for four years. When I arrived in California, I passed out flyers for $6 an hour. When you started out in this country, did you ever imagine you would have accomplished as much as you have by the age of 40? I never thought about it really. This country is so different from where I grew up, and everything was new to me. I did not even know where I would be the next day, much less at 40. How were you discovered in your modeling career? Do you think it still happens this way? Haha. Today girls are discovered on Instagram. I was in the U.S. for about four years when I was discovered in a restaurant where I worked as a server. A nice woman came up to me and asked me if I model. I said I do not. Then she said her husband, who was sitting at their table, was a photographer and would like to test shoot me. I had always loved modeling but felt I was too short for it. At that point, I was also well into my 20’s. But, it felt good that someone approached me to model and so I gave it a shot. That test shoot got me my first agent. Two months later I shot my first national commercial and three months later I was eligible for SAG (Screen Actors Guild). A lot has been written about you and your old rock and roll lifestyle. How do you feel about that part of your life now? I still live a rock and roll lifestyle. I like to live on the edge, take chances, and give it my all. I am an artist,
and I like having friends who are also artists. I like being around rock and roll music because it is close to my heart. I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s when rock and roll was going strong. I like the melancholic side of rock. The music back then was about sad lyrics but upbeat melody. It was very romantic. What are some of your biggest disappointments and lessons in life and love? I think the biggest disappointment to me is people. I have learned there are just too many cruel people in this world who like to cause pain and thrive on it. I will never understand this. However, I have also learned there are millions of beyond amazing people, and so I still have faith in humanity. When it comes to love, I have learned you have to love yourself first, be honest with yourself Now at 40, and own who you are. You cannot judge yourself for I am ready. I am sure not being ‘this’ or ‘that.’ Be proud of who you are and if you have heard the you are not, change it. Work on yourself to be who you saying by Carl Jung want to be. Once you are “Life begins content with yourself, the right love will find you.
at 40.”
Speaking of love, you have I agree gotten back together with your first husband. How is love with him 100%. different now than it was then? Well, now he knows what he wants now. Haha. I met Deja in 1998, and it was love at the first sight. When parted, I knew it was not the last time we would see each other. 10 years later, he reached out and although I was in a relationship at that time, a year and a half later, we ended up back together. Do you believe that both of you being from the same country helps create a balanced relationship? I do because I feel that I have the best of the both worlds. I get to be myself on a cultural level while we both are living the American dream together. Do you believe that women can have it all? I believe women can have it all but just not usually at the same time. If you have a clear vision of what you want and get on the road to getting it, it is only a matter of time. There are a few exceptions for when you can have it all at the same time. It has happened to me, and I’m sure has happened to other people, people who know how to manifest. Nevertheless, be careful what you wish for! Sometimes having it all is not the best thing for you. In life, I have learned some things are better left as a dream or an idea.

Having been identified as a sex symbol, what do you feel is the perception that the public has of you? I have never perceived myself as a sex symbol. Playing the role of a sexy woman on camera is a job. To me, it is acting and it is fun. If anything, I have always felt like that image did not represent me well. I am a very intellectual person and usually the first one to talk politics or world affairs. I am very opinionated. I like debates. However, the industry does not care to see that side of me. Heaven forbid a young girl from Central Europe with platinum hair could be smart! You have built your brand on your face and body. Now that you are a businesswoman do you feel that it has that helped you or hurt you? It is more about who I deal with. Some people who know me from my modeling days have a hard time seeing me as anything different than a model. It is not about my looks, so much as the position I held. They just can’t take me seriously. In some cases, they cannot accept that I have outgrown them or became more successful since, at some point in their lives I worked for them. It is almost impossible to do business with
end goal in my mind, and the right opportunities keep coming and leading me to it. Who is your market? Moreover, why do you feel they are and how do you feel VIVA GLAM serves them? It serves them as a lifestyle guide to achieving the life of their dreams. The ‘VIVA GLAM woman’ does not want to blend in, and she is not afraid to stand up for her beliefs. I like to think that in my daily life, I bring encouragement and compassion to everyone I meet. Now that I have VIVA GLAM, I try to inspire others. There are so many places to look and find darkness. I want to provide something fun and uplifting and celebrate the beauty in this world. I also hope that by promoting love, an impression will be left on others to do the same. It is important

to get others to understand how crucial it is to not hold grudges in life. Because holding onto that pain prevents you from living the fulfilled life you deserve.
You oversee all aspects of VIVA GLAM Magazine. What skill sets do you have that help you to accomplish your goals? I am known for wearing many hats. My background is in marketing, business, modeling, PR, graphic design, beauty, and producing shoots, just to name a few. To grow a brand you have to grow yourself, which is perfect for me since I love to learn.
How do you think life has changed for you over the years? My 20’s were just figuring out love, life, and myself in general. My 30’s were better; I started to understand more and figure out how life and success work. Now at 40, I am ready. I am sure you have heard the saying by Carl Jung “Life begins at 40.” I agree with him 100%.
What is a success to you regarding your business and brand? Many brands, including magazines, do not make it past the 2-year mark. Success to me is being able to grow. If you feel you keep reaching the next level, that is success. I have big plans for VIVA GLAM and would love to see it as an international brand serving women around the world. This year should be a good year for us.
The advantage of age is that you have more wisdom. What advice would you give to your younger self? I would tell myself that everything is subjective and in most cases, there is no right and no wrong. Everything is a perception. Believe in yourself, do not worry about what others think about you, and follow your dreams. You can be whoever you want to be.
Do you have a five-year plan? If yes what? If not, why? I do not have a five-year plan. I think in today’s modern world, where technology advances five times faster than just 20 years ago, it is hard to plan that far in advance. Things seem to change overnight. However, I always keep an overall vision of the brand and its

Actress Despina Mirou Follows Her Dreams from Greece to Stardom in the US! Despina Mirou is a well-
known Greek-American actress and writer. She began her interest in the arts as a child and quickly received two writing awards. She forged ahead to complete ten theatrical productions and then started working in films and television. It’s amazing to see how easily she can jump from drama to comedy; she is known to be a chameleon!
L
ast year, she moved to Los Angeles where she participated in a master class with Al Pacino. She just finished seven works: a drama with Faye Dunaway, a comedy with Renee Taylor, some parts in a television series, and a performance at a NY comedy club where she impersonated Lucille Ball. She even made time to receive an award from US Congress for her speech about women. Despina represents talent that meets the passion of her gaze. She is a combination of Mediterranean temperament and voluptuous beauty. 108
www.vivaglammagazine.com
Despina, what made you decide to come to the US and pursue your dream of acting in the States? Were there any particular challenges you had to overcome in coming to another country to follow your dream? In Greece things are especially difficult now! LA is the best place for an actor who is very interested in the film industry, and here I have a lot of opportunities. Also, I love the Southern California sun! The big challenge is worth the risk. This is why I left my ongoing career in Europe to start from scratch! I received my celebrity Green Card. I also went to college to improve my English and I joined SAG. I had plenty of work and many auditions. Also, I have met amazing people! Who was the person or people who most influenced you to achieve your passions in life? In my personal life, it was my twin sister, with whom I have a very deep connection. In my professional life, actors such as Jack Nicholson, Marlon Brando, Katharine Hepburn, and Jerry Lewis have always inspired me.
You have worked with some of Hollywood’s greatest. Who have you worked with and do you have good memories? It has been such a pleasure to meet such special artists! They are charismatic personalities; they are talented and very generous. Al Pacino was a unique teacher in the master class. And Renee Taylor was so generous to me during the shooting of the film Tango Shalom. I also have to include John Strasberg, John Malkovich, and Keith Richards as really positive experiences. Working with such amazing actors has helped me to become not only a better actress but also a better person. You are also a smart businesswoman in addition to being a creative talent. What advice do you have for our readers who would like to follow in your footsteps? ‘Follow your heart’ is always my motto. Take risks, be brave, and work hard, keeping your talent warm with a lot of preparation like an athlete. Don’t be afraid of problems; problems are camouflaged opportunities! You also know the importance of giving back. What charities are important to your heart and why? I am very sensitive about blind people, children with disabilities, and the homeless. For several years, I lived with a child who had disabilities, and it ‘Follow was a big schooling for your heart’ is me. These children are very charismatic. My always special interest for the blind stems from my motto. a family experience. The blind are heroic because their daily life is painful and difficult; they see with the eyes of the soul. As for the homeless, my heart hurts every time I see a homeless person in the streets. What is the craziest thing that you have done for your work? I was up for a role in the film Flight of the Swan directed by N. Tzimas. He called me to play a young mother who has lost her child after a mountain catastrophe. The director told me that I was too beautiful for the character; that he wanted a village girl. So to prove to him that I was fit for the role, I covered my body with mud and wore my neighbor’s old village dress. Then I went to his office; I fell to his floor, and I began to cry that I had lost my child! He directly offered me the role.

Chantel Jeffries On Beauty Trends and How to Flaunt Your Favorite Features
D
uring our photo shoot, we sat down with Chantel and asked her for beauty advice for our readers. Find out what her fans ask her about most, what she can’t live without, and how to flaunt your favorite features.
W hat is your favorite era for beauty?
I like different things from different eras, so I wouldn’t be able to choose just one. Specifically, I like hair from the 80s and eyebrows from today, not the skinny [eyebrows] from before.
What new beauty trends are you dying to try?
I think one of my favorites is the faux freckles. But I’ve been doing them for a while. In fact, I’ll be coming out with a faux freckle kit, so look out for that! I also like the thick brows for sure. I’ve had thick eyebrows all my life, and I’ve struggled because I didn’t really like them. But now that I’m comfortable with them, I love that look too.
What is one product that you cannot live without? I cannot live without my skincare products because

without clear skin, I don’t feel like myself. I use Clearogin; it’s a great three-step regimen. It helps me feel confident, so everything else falls right into place.
W hat is the most common question you get asked by your fans?
Probably anything that has to do with eyebrows. They ask, “Do you wax, thread, pluck, how do you make them grow, etc.?”
W here do you see yourself in 10 years?
I see myself deeper into my acting career. I would love to write and help develop projects for other people. I love comedy. I see myself with my brand, Club Noir, in fashion. It’s fashion-forward functionality. I see that growing and expanding. [Also], I’ll probably be starting a family by then. I will be in my 30s, so I will hopefully have a child or two by then. As Chantel is known for her curves and beauty skills, we asked her how to play up your favorite features and what trends she would recommend for you!

HIPS
If you love your hips, I would recommend high-waisted garments in order to accentuate them. I really like high-waisted distressed denim right now.
LEGS
If you love your legs, then show them off a little! Wear strappy pumps with a mid-length skirt. Try pairing this combination with a loose-fitting trench coat.
CHEST
If you love your chest, accentuate your silhouette with a form-fitting or sheer turtleneck. I love this trend for fall/winter, especially in different earth tone colors.
LIPS
If you love your lips, apply a natural color lip with a bit darker outer liner. Also, try using concealer lined around your lip and a dash of shimmer on your cupid’s bow to give the perfect pout.
CHEEKBONES
If you love your cheekbones, contour them with a natural matte bronzer and then accentuating with a nude highlighting illuminator on the top of your cheekbones.
EYES
If you love your eyes, try complimenting colors to your eye color. Brown eyes compliment well with purple tones, green with earth green and purple, and blue eyes with browns. Another trend to try is lash extensions. They give your eyes a pop without makeup.

INSTANT MOM STYLE TIA MOWRY
talks about evolution through wardrobe Many Viva Glam girls are shoe fanatics. What kind of fashionista isn’t? A killer pair of shoes can take you places and we know that. If we had the opportunity to shop a designer shoe closet, it would be a dream come true, right? Well, shoe fanatic and Instant Mom actress Tia Mowry-Hardrict gets to do that on a daily basis, simultaneously living her shoe dream while playing a role she loves.
Tia
Mowry-Hardrict has been playing the role of Stephanie Phillips since 2013, capturing the hearts of American audiences as the party girl turned fashionista stepmom. We’ve watched her glamorous wardrobe evolve from glitzy party dresses to stylish classic ensembles, most of which the audience can afford to purchase as the outfits are a mix of high and low brands. Besides Instant Mom, Tia Mowry-Hardrict has her own cooking show on The Cooking Channel titled Tia Mowry At Home. Not only is she bringing us laughter while we enjoy the company of our family, but she’s

providing good meals to share with them as well. From her active and popular Instagram account, we know Tia Mowry-Hardrict has a sexy and sophisticated sense of style. We were intrigued to find out more about how she has grown with the role of Stephanie as the wardrobe evolved with her storyline. While Stephanie may have switched from partying with the girls to hanging out with the step kids, she has yet to take off her Louboutins, so she will always be a style inspiration to us.

How would you describe Stephanie’s style? Stephanie is very chic and cool. She’s also just very much into high-fashion brands. She’s wearing Gucci. I think that’s one thing that I love about this character is that this is a woman who had a life before she had kids and she’s extremely into style, but she didn’t let
She’s balancing working and being a mom. You’ll see her more in blazers and some stylish trousers. Before that she was a fashionista who had a career and had fun with friends. Now it’s about still staying fashionable but also being this businesswoman and a mom at the same time. With that said, her style is a lot more
I think I take more risks. I’m not all about following the trends; I’m all about
wearing what I like. If what I like creates a trend, then so be it. her being a mom change that. She’s running around after these kids in Louboutins. As Stephanie has gotten more comfortable in her role as stepmom, her wardrobe, makeup, and hair have toned down and have become more polished. How else do you think her style has evolved?
116

comfortable but she’s not sacrificing her style and being chic with it. She’s wearing snakeskin trousers with a white blazer, sparkly Louboutins, and even incorporating a little bit of flats. But when she’s rocking flats, they have to be bold, full of color, and stylish. When she’s rolling up, I guess at the kids’ school, she’s not in mom jeans. Let’s just say that.
As Stephanie’s wardrobe evolved, did it help you grow with the role? Yeah, I think what came with that evolution was a little more maturity. In a sense, she is a mom and she has to take on certain responsibilities, which is...she is making the kids’ lunch every morning, she’s making them dinner; she’s a parent on the committee at school. It helped me bring a nice maturity to the role and what I mean is responsibility. She’s always been motherly but I think she’s more comfortable and more in her own skin this year, so maybe more confident with being a mom. What do you love most about Stephanie’s style? I love that she’s rocking high heels. This woman has the best high heel collection. I mean it’s versatile. She’ll have some ankle boots, knee boots, open-toe high heels, pumps, etc. The cameramen [on Instant Mom], all four of them, have asked me how I’m doing in regards to my feet. We shot an episode where I was running around the house with a garbage bag, going up and down the stairs. But that’s what I mean with Stephanie, she’s a very stylish woman who doesn’t let go of her style now that she’s a mom and she has an envious stepdaughter because of that who’s always wanting to borrow her clothes. In what ways is Stephanie’s style different from your personal style? I think I take more risks. I’m not all about following the trends; I’m all about wearing what I like. If what I like creates a trend, then so be it. I wore one of my favorite outfits a few months ago. I wore these denim shorts with a Rolling Stones vintage tee and I put on my Balmain blazer and a DIY velvet choker with some heels. I also loved this bomb kimono jacket from Kate Moss’s line at TopShop. I really like Stephanie’s style, but she’s more about name brands. I like to mix my wardrobe with highend labels, like Balmain, Stuart Weitzman, and Balenciaga, but then I’ll throw in a piece from TopShop, Zara, or even a DIY piece.

If there were one outfit you could take away from the set, which one would it be? I actually already took this outfit home, which is so funny, I don’t even think I wore it because we planned on me wearing it but then I accidently got a stain on it. (Laughs) It’s a fuchsia A-line knee-length dress, very 60s-inspired with bell sleeves. I took it because I liked the way it fit. It felt very classic and fuchsia looks great with my skin tone. The Instant Mom stylist, Bramli Knauf, is really into the 60s, so that’s what I’m wearing this year, [a lot of] bell-bottoms and denim flares.
While Stephanie owns a lot of high-end pieces, the average outfit Stephanie wears is relatively affordable with most pieces under $200. Do you think that allows Stephanie to be more relatable or inspire fans to dress like her? Yeah, I think that’s a cool quality of Stephanie’s. Fashion doesn’t have to be expensive. I think that’s really cool. She’s a mom, she has a family, and she’s trying to balance what she spends her money on and that’s a very relatable topic. Stephanie’s style is a way to show people that fashion can be affordable.

Known as the Live
Music Capital of the World,
Austin is a city that is steeped in both the traditions of the Old West and the innovations of new technology, music, culture, and cuisine. With over 250 live music venues, Austin is home to rock, country, the blues, classical, and music in many other forms. And with many restaurants with 5 star critical acclaim, Austin is also a city known for its eclectic food culture. Also, with the help of celebrities such as Sandra Bullock, Matthew McConaughey, and director Richard Linklater, the film industry has taken notice of Austin and it is now a leading destination for both big budget and independent films. Whether it be sky diving at Adrenaline 365 or listening to live country music on the infamous Sixth Street Strip, we were ready for just about anything. We stayed at the charming Hotel San Jose on South Congress Avenue. This hotel is known for its emphasis on Indie film. There are hundreds of eclectic movies that are complimentary for you to watch during your stay. Whether it be John Waters’ Pink Flamingos, Richard Linklater’s Slacker, or The Wilson Brothers’ Bottle Rocket, you’ll get a crash course in Indie film during your stay at this charming, hipster hotel.

You can also ride on the bat watching tour from Capital Tours, or picnic on the sidelines while waiting for the bats to make their nightly foray out into the night in search of insects. You will learn quickly that bats are not the scary creatures they are portrayed to be in the movies. Rather, they perform an important duty to the community each night by eating millions of mosquitoes that breed in nearby lakes Austin and Travis. So, I guess bats are not so bad after all. Another must see in Austin is the Sixth Street Strip, which is located downtown. This is the hub for Austin’s nightlife with live music venues, bars, and restaurants stretching for several blocks. We originally intended to go skydiving, but we realized this might be a bit too extreme for some of our family members, so a trip to I Fly was a perfect compromise and something the whole family could enjoy together. It is a flying experience in a giant wind tunnel that generates up to 1600 horse power wind from four fans. This creates a cushion of air on which you float safely and comfortably. I ventured to Croatia with my friend, Roya, in August. We began our journey in Dubrovnik. We stayed at the Five Star Hotel Excelsior, in a guestroom with sweeping views of the sea, and only a five-minute walk to the legendary Old Town of Dubrovnik. The Hotel Excelsior dates back to 1913, and has had many famous visitors including Queen Elizabeth II, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, Sir Roger Moore, and most recently, the legendary film director Francis Ford Coppola. and dates back to the 14th century. It felt like stepping back in time to a medieval village made of stone. I was happy to find a vegetarian restaurant in the Old Town. Nishta restaurant opened recently by a married couple named Ruzica and Gildas, who are both certified chefs. The menu offers several vegan options. I began with the Crusty Salad, a raw, vegan dish of arugula, almond cheese, tomatoes, zucchini noodles, avocado, and a flax seed crust made with sundried tomatoes, which was excellent.
Chef Chavez prepared a
delicious dish of quinoa and vegetables with a mango citrus sauce. The restaurant is very elegant with a grapevine-laced terrace overlooking the Adriatic Sea and Dubrovnik Old Town. I also enjoyed the Banana Curry dish with brown rice. Roya loved the vegetarian burrito with tempeh, salsa, beans, cheese, and rice-which can also be made vegan. The second day, we proceeded to walk on the famous Wall of Dubrovnik in the Old Town when a thunderstorm with rapid lightening appeared! This was the first rainstorm in more than three months. We ran as fast as we could to reach the end of the wall, where we could get back down to the city. We quickly entered an oyster and sushi restaurant called Bota for relief from the rain. I was very impressed that they offer an elaborate vegan sushi platter on the menu, with veggie cut rolls, zucchini and carrot tempura, and two
pieces of individual sushi made with avocado on top. It was a perfect lunch paired with wine, while we waited for the intense storm to settle. Later that night, we tried a highly recommended Peruvian fusion restaurant, Victoria, which just opened at Villa Orsula, located next to Hotel Excelsior. Victoria Restaurant is helmed by Chef Roberto Chavez, who is guided by a philosophy of healthconscious cuisine, blending Inca roots with the flavors of Spanish, Basque, African, Asian, French, Italian, and British cuisine. and Dubrovnik Old Town. The ambiance and view were incredible. The next day, we hired a private car and driver to visit the country of Montenegro. The drive from Dubrovnik was very scenic with winding roads overlooking the dramatic coastline below. We arrived at Kotor Bay and our driver brought the car onto the actual ferry, which was a unique experience. I was especially excited to see the Aman Sveti Stefan resort, located on its own island amidst the Adriatic Sea, as I am a huge fan of Aman Resorts after having stayed at Amansara in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Aman Sveti Stefan was originally built as a fortified village by a wealthy family in the 15th century, and became part of the Aman collection four years ago. It was all I had anticipated and more. Upon entering the area of Sveti Stefan, we parked and then walked on the isthmus to the resort. Aman Sveti Stefan’s cottages are accessed via stone footpaths and staircases designed to follow the organic contours of the island. Each room, cottage, and suite is unique and features 600 year-old red tiled roofs. There are three red sand beaches on the property, which reminded me Aman Sveti Stefan of the famed red sand beach in Santorini, Greece.

The second course included sautéed green peas, carrots, and red bell peppers with grilled tofu. We finished with dessert, including an array of fresh fruit and house-made sorbet with mint. We were in heaven. Later that day, we headed to the island of Hvar via a ferry and checked into the Amfora Hotel, which was recommended by a friend and located within walking distance of the main town. The hotel is very contemporary and has a notably large pool. That night, we had cocktails at the property’s sister hotel, Adriana, on the chic rooftop lounge, which has a modern design on both levels. It was filled with people from around the world who were in town for The Yacht Week. We found a vegetarian and vegan friendly restaurant the next morning by viewing the Happy Cow app. Vita Health Food Bar serves smoothies, green juices, and an array of salads and sandwiches. We started out with almond milk lattes and green smoothies, and
then enjoyed a salad of arugula, quinoa, avocado, tomatoes, walnuts, and hemp seeds. It was exciting to see such a health conscious restaurant in the middle of the touristy Hvar town. We spent much of our time in Hvar enjoying the scenic beach club, Hula Hula, at sunset and the Carpe Diem Beach Club later at night, which is located on a remote island only accessible by boat. Both venues featured great cocktails with picturesque settings on the water. We were fortunate to be in Hvar during the same two nights as The Yacht Week, and so were able to meet up with our friend Kelly from Los Angeles. She invited us to The Yacht Week’s White Party, which was filled with a variety of international guests, supplying us with fascinating conversations and a fabulous evening. I am so grateful to have experienced Croatia and Montenegro, and hope to return to its beauty and culture again soon. If you ever get the chance, I would definitely recommend signing up for The Yacht Week in Croatia, or if you prefer a more tranquil experience, chartering a boat to see many of the islands.

But, a new experimental drug called Kerbiozen had just come out and was offered to the patient. He agreed to try it and was given the injection. Within a few days he was walking about the ward. His tumors, originally the size of oranges, had shrunk to golf ball size. His condition continued to improve and he was soon released from the hospital. Two months after his release the patient saw a news story stating Krebiozen didn’t work. Although Krebiozen seemingly worked for our patient, he believed the news story about the ineffectiveness of the new drug. Within days the cancer had returned and he was back in the

hospital. Out of options, the patient’s doctor made a bold move and decided to lie to his patient, telling him the news story was wrong. The doctor also said the cancer returned because the original injection of Krebiozen must have been less potent due to storage issues at the hospital pharmacy. The doctor said he ordered another injection that would be double the strength of the first one. The patient decided to take the double strength injection. Now, the entire story was a lie. There was no double strength Krebiozen. The doctor, instead, injected the patient with pure water, or a placebo. Believing the injection was double strength, the patient’s cancer rapidly disappeared. The patient’s expectations of the drug’s outcome provided the cure. Within two months, another news story broke again saying Krebiozen was shown to be useless in clinical trials. Seeing this, the patient believed this story.
The tumors quickly reappeared. The patient was readmitted to the hospital where he died two days later. This is the power of belief. Two things stood out to me in this medical case. One was the issue of the placebo effect and the other was the power of belief – used to both heal and harm our patient. First, let’s define the placebo effect. Then we will deal with the amazing power of belief. For a good definition, I located an article by Harvard University’s Medical School that defined a placebo in this way: “…it’s a favorable response to a medical intervention — a pill, a procedure, a counseling session, you name it — that doesn’t have a direct physiological effect. (Note the emphasis on direct, because there do seem to be indirect effects.) The classic example is when people enrolled in a study experience some improvement in their condition even though they have been assigned, for comparison purposes, to take “dummy” pills that don’t contain any active ingredients.” The word placebo literally means “I will please” in Latin. The placebo effect and the power of belief go hand in hand since it is the belief, or expectation of healing, that powers the placebo. It seems if we believe we can be healed, we often are. “Expectation is a powerful thing,” says Robert DeLap, M.D., head of one of the Food and Drug Administration’s Offices of Drug Evaluation. “The more you believe you’re going to benefit from a treatment, the more likely it is that you will experience a benefit.”
The Power Within
This power to cure, or heal, ourselves comes from within. It’s not that traditional medicine can’t be or isn’t helpful. But, studies consistently show that the power of the mind, the power of expectations of healing, and the belief in treatments work nearly as effective as traditional medical treatment including surgery. Let’s take a look at a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine and led by Dr. Bruce Moseley, clinical associate professor at Baylor University. In this study, 180 patients with knee pain were randomized into three groups. Two groups received actual surgical procedures. The third group, however, underwent simulated arthroscopic surgery where small incisions were made, but no instruments were inserted and no cartilage was removed. During the study, none of the patients knew if they had received real surgery or placebo surgery. During the two years of follow-ups, patients in all three groups reported moderate improvements in pain and ability to function. However, neither of the two real surgery groups reported less pain or better function than the placebo group. In fact, at some
points during the follow-ups, the placebo patients reported better outcomes than the patients of at least one of the real surgeries. The conclusion of this study? For the medical community, this study has led to the understanding that arthroscopic surgery, as performed an estimated 200,000 times a year for the treatment of osteoarthritic knees, may be useless. “My opinion is we probably shouldn’t be doing it,” said Moseley. This is the power of belief in action. Not only could it keep us from needless surgeries, pill popping, and other potentially harmful treatments with unwanted side effects, our belief in our ability to heal could save us a lot of time, unnecessary pain, and money. In the story above about our lymphoma patient, we can see that his beliefs helped heal him, but also harmed him. Our training from an early age wasn’t overly helpful in the “you are a powerful being” department. We were saddled with scads of limiting beliefs that left us thinking we are weak and incapable in many ways. As such, we tend towards doom and gloom rather than potential and opportunity. So many of us falsely believe we are powerless to change our health for the better, but this is simply not true. We are not limited or powerless. We can heal our lives if we believe we can. If you can’t see this power in yourself, look at the scientific studies and the stories of healing that prove it and let them inspire you to believe in the possibility of healing for you. Dr. Bruce Lipton, a cell biologist and former medical school professor and research scientist, wrote The Biology of Belief (Hay House 2015 – Updated Copy), that shows how beliefs control behavior and gene activity. Dr. Lipton’s research shows that genes and DNA do not control our biology. Instead, DNA is controlled by signals from outside the cell, including the energetic messages emanating from our positive and negative thoughts. Dr. Lipton’s research in cell biology and quantum physics is a major breakthrough in science today, showing that our bodies can be changed as we retrain our thinking. Most of us have not yet begun to tap into the power of our mind to change our lives and to heal us. We don’t know that we can choose to perceive ourselves, as well as our environment, in ways different from what we have been taught. We definitely don’t have to perceive ourselves in a way that is harmful to us. We can use the science and the stories of healing to help us see the false, limiting beliefs that hold us back and keep us from healing all areas of our life, even our health. If someone else can do it, so can you. Somewhere deep inside us, we know the truth. We can take back control of our lives. We have the power. Are You a “People Pleaser”? The Importance of Balanced Giving
Unbalanced Giving
I was an addict. I didn’t take drugs, drink, or gamble. I wasn’t addicted to sex, food, or exercise. I had none of the usual addictions. I had something else; I was addicted to giving to others. Also known as “people pleasing”, I was the “yes” person, meaning I had no real boundaries as to what I’d give others financially,

emotionally, and physically. But, this kind of giving is obviously out of balance with what is healthy and reasonable. So why do we do it? We are looking for acceptance and approval from others as a way to feel better about ourselves. Only problem is – it doesn’t work. The people pleaser rarely says, “No” or “Enough”.
“People pleasing” is an intense need to give to, to do for, to care for, and to please others for the main purpose of being loved. To people pleasers, being accepted or approved of means being loved. Somewhere in childhood, we received the message that we are worthy of love only when we behave in certain ways - when we are obedient, pleasant, agreeable, and when we do things the way the other person wants them done. We are taught that when we don’t comply, the consequences include getting yelled at, having someone frustrated at us, being told we are useless or stupid, and feeling un-loved. When we carry this thinking or methodology into adulthood, we struggle because each person we come in contact with is someone we need to please in order to be accepted. And in order to be accepted, approved of, or loved we become a fraud, leaving our true feelings and the need to care for ourselves behind. It affects every part of our lives, especially romantic relationships. People pleasers will typically pair up with an extremely controlling person often creating an emotionally abusive environment. If paired up with a healthy partner, this people pleasing’ attitude creates divisiveness. Our inability to be who we truly want to be cultivates the feeling that no one truly loves us. How could they when they don’t really know who we are, what we think, or what we want? Always pretending or putting others first prevents us from genuinely connecting with them. No matter what, our need to please perpetuates the cycle of not feeling loved or accepted and therefore needing to please more. If this is not corrected, we are ensured to live a stressful life filled with exhaustion, low self-esteem, resentment, and an empty bank account.
Unbalanced Giving is Fear
The driving force behind people pleasing is our fear of not being good enough. This fear generates more fear like the fear of rejection and the fear of failure. We are constantly afraid of being rejected if what we do is not enough. But, in a world where we have been taught that we are not good enough, that is par for the course. Anything we do based on this teaching can only have an outcome that reinforces our belief of not being good enough. The fear of failure is a close relative of rejection because when we are rejected, we have failed. When we don’t do enough or if we haven’t done it the right way, people may not like us, or worse yet they may leave us. The truth is we are always going to fail in the end when we depend on people pleasing tactics to feel accepted and loved. This is a form of conditional love
and conditional love isn’t real love. It is time for us to see the root of these fears so they no longer plague our lives. Be active every day to recognize when they pop up so that they can no longer have any control over us. That way, when we give, we are doing it freely and through real love. The only way to guarantee that you feel accepted and loved is to do it for yourself. We haven’t been taught how to do this, but we can learn. We must learn the truth about people pleasing. Truth leads to healing. It is time for every people pleaser to see that their level of giving is out of balance and ask themselves why.
It’s all in the Mind
There is a belief that lives deep in our People subconscious that says we are not good pleasers enough. The belief is not true, but most of will typically pair up us don’t know that so we devise ways to with an extremely overcome it. People controlling person pleasing is one of those ways. Of course, the often creating an simplest, most effective way to overcome this emotionally abusive is to stop believing we are not good enough. environment. But, that’s not always so easy due to the years of conditioning and mind created support of that selfsabotaging concept. So, until this untrue belief drops away, we must understand how the mind operates with this belief and see that the entire process is nothing more than an experience our mind has created. Here’s how people pleaser thinking goes: Our mind tells us that if we are going to be accepted and loved we have to do and do, give and give. So we do and do and give and give. And then our mind evaluates the effectiveness of those actions. Did it work? Did we get what we were hoping for? Do we feel accepted and loved? If the person hasn’t responded in a way that we think shows they accept and love us, our mind tells us we have failed. We feel worse than before. But, it’s all happening in our mind – the entire process of people pleasing does not go beyond the boundaries of the mind. It’s a massive set up; a trick that we are falling for over and over. The fact that it is all happening in the mind is good news because it means we can unravel these beliefs, thoughts, and behaviors to get to the bottom of them. Once we begin to, we will see that we have more power to change than ever imagined. That power starts with awareness and ends with self-love.

Balance Comes with Love
The ultimate balancer in life is self-love. So many of us hear this term but don’t really know what it means. Selflove means no longer following the beliefs and thoughts you have about not being good enough. That includes no more putting your own desires aside in order to please someone else. The truth is we don’t need others to approve of us or accept us; we only need to approve of and accept ourselves. We don’t need others to make us feel loved; we only need to love ourselves. Self-approval is self-acceptance. When we approve of how we are right now, as a whole, we love ourselves. There are no conditions in this. We are not responsible for anyone else’s pleasure, so stop pleasing others and focus on pleasing yourself. Live for you, not for someone else. It is time for us to be our authentic selves. No more putting our dreams aside because someone else reacts or is unhappy about them. No more working longer hours than anyone at the office just to prove to the boss we are worthy of a raise. No more worrying that people won’t like us if we say “no.” No more holding back, keeping quiet, giving up or ignoring for the sake of pleasing anyone other than ourselves. No more being afraid. It is time to be brave, to be strong and to be you. It is time for you to express yourself and to live your life the way you want to live it. You deserve nothing less. You are and always have been good enough. That is the truth.
Let’s get started today.
Below are some things that may help you break free from habitual people pleasing and begin living the life you really want today: • Recognize and admit to people pleasing. • Decide to stand up for yourself, stick to your guns, and make your voice heard. • Know that you don’t have to be aggressive or confrontational in becoming authentic – kindness and peace are good for all parties involved. • If you have resentment and anger, find healthy ways to express it, then move on. • Stop saying “yes” to everyone and everything. You don’t have to do anything to be accepted and loved. You are fine just the way you are.
Being our true selves and no longer giving to others for their approval or acceptance means we can give from our heart. We can give without expectation or consequence. That is giving freely. Balance in giving can be found in the place where love exists. You will know it when you experience it.
