The Difference Between

Mistakes You Might Be Making 6

WWWVIVAGLAMMAGAZINE.COM

CONTOURING AND SCULPTING often get mistaken for the same technique, However there is a big difference between the two, Here's a quick explanation: ~II/Alima is a shaping technique applied when you want to correct , change, or re-shape I

"P~L ~ d

your facial featu res. This applies to our bodies as well but let's just talk face for now.

-

~

is a technique applied when you want to outline your features. More often than not, women are trying to achieve a more sculpted face. They want to accentuate thei r c ks, make their nose smaller, bottom lip bigger, forehead smaller, etc. Mistakenly, they are using a contouring technique instead of sculpting, which only makes them look more tan.

Let's assume you want to sculpt your face and correct the little imperfections. WWWVIVAGLAMMAGAZINE.COM

Here are step-by-step instructions:

only one color - TAUPE. If you're a lighter complexion you need to use a lighter shade of Taupe; if you're a darker complexion, you need to use a darker shade of Taupe.

Why Taupe only?

Taupe is the ONLY color that creates the "shadow effect". It doesn't translate as a color and creates the illusion of a hollow area on the face. If you use shades of brown, bronze, and orange, you create a tan (contouring), but that doesn't chi3,filge the ' " proportions of your face.

I prefer to use fingers to blend the color inward or upward. When I use a powder, I use an angled brush that's very dense. If the bristles are soft, you won't be able to blend the product well and you won't achieve the result you want.

d(;)f!!fi:=t'!:o~~!ve

seen the tribal-looking makeup over and over, showing you the same technique on different faces. But does it work for every face? No. Each face is unique and so should be the way you sculpt it.

For example, I have a wide forehead so I definitely want to "shave off" the sides of it with the sculpting product. But, if you have a very narrow forehead, sculpting is

not necessa, ;;::ead is too long.

TIP: Av.oid Contour Creams Many beauty companies make contour cream kits to make contouring "easier" for you. Once again, these palettes are for contouring, which means framing your features, not for altering them. Creams are usually too thick and can make your face look like a mask. This look is perfect for Instagram after running your selfie through a bunch of filters. In real life, women can look fake and cakey.

4A

~

In conclusion, I recommend that you the contouring technique if you want to bring and more dimension to your face. Use the sculpti nique if you want to change the dimensions of you to get as close to "perfect" as mathematically PO~3si1';ue.

~

Using the correct tools is very important because sculpting needs to appear as a sha ow that's fading in and out. When using a cream,

YO~'~-~~~~~- t-h-e best sculpting effect if _ you wse the opposite color to taupe. This shade is determined by your actual complexion color. You need a color that's two shades lighter than your foundation. Sculpting is a p of contrast. If you want your feature to stand out, you use both colors.

about what

How did your modeling career begin? I was 14 when a model scout discovered me. It was just my mum and my little sister, 4 years old at the time, and we needed the money. So, helping my family was a big inspiration for me. I remember my first trip, like it was yesterday. I was 15 when I travelled to Japan, I didn't speak the language, and I was traveling alone. I had an amazing agency and they really helped me with everything, but it was still hard. I was in my model apartment, crying so bad because I missed my family - but I never quit. I traveled through Asia and Europe for another 13 years. Modeling has made me stronger, given me the opportunity to travel, see the world, and experience different cultures; it is amazing.

Do you see any significant differences in the modeling industry from country to country? Oh yes, it's so different. Each country is special and each country likes different types of models. I traveled throughout Asia, doing a lot of catalogues, campaigns, and TV commercials. I do very well over there.

believes that hairdressers, not large companies, are leading the way towards healthier hair products. Because hairdressers have personal connections with and listen to their client's desires, the entire hair industry is being refashioned.

John owned a leading salon in Beverly Hills for 18 years. Along the way he met model Teri La Verne. John explained, "She was a model and her hair was damaged from years of styling, bleaching, and highlighting. So we would do special hair treatments on her." It wasn't long before the partnership was forged. The collaboration between this well-known Beverly Hills Salon Owner and Fashion Model would eventually be the innovation of Rare EI'ements. It was around this time that John had a client bring her own shampoo into the salon. John couldn't help but ask why. "She told me she was a breast cancer survivor and her doctor had told her a lot of ingredients in shampoos and conditioners are carcinogenic. This sparked my concern and since we were in the process of creating a hair care line, I asked a chemist friend of mine about it. He told me that while carcinogens make up a very small percentage of shampoos and conditioners, it is the cumulative effect of toxins that can eventually cause cancer. Women use several beauty products everyday such as shampoo, lotions, creams, makeup, and deodorant. After many years, this build up of toxins can cause cancer." That is when they decided to work with the chemist to create the best shampoo and conditioner possible, with only natural ingredients and NO silicones, sulfates, or parabens. He remembered, "I didn't care about the cost. At the time, we made the best witln the raw ma erials available. As time went on, the companies supplying the raw materials acquired even better ingredient's, resulting in a better prodl!lot." I

I

Having had the pleasure of experiencing Rare EI'ements Iltyself, I found everything about it to be impressive. Each of the exotic in0redients used, like Marula oil, Kalahari melon seed oil, bergamot, rosewood oil, and others, are specifically selected for their individual properties and affects. Rare EI'ements also uses surfactants, which are not found in any other brand. It smells wonderful and I love what it does to my hair. I agree that they bridge the gap between natural hair care and salon quality. Rare EI'ements is made in the US, it supports America's work force along with having the integrity to not test on animals. And seriously, I love the packaging! It is gorgeous and looks very chic and stylish on my shelf. John left me with these simple words of advice. "Use the best products for your hair because your hair stays with you. You take your clothes off, but your hair you don't. I see women cutting corners by using cheaper products. They will go to a nightclub and spend 15 dollars on a drink, but not invest in their hair care!"

HEALTHY, GLAMOROUS HAIR

I

As a top stylist I often am asked about why my clients may be experiencing hair loss or thinning and most of them are women, Well the answer is //for a number of reasons, I interviewed Dr, Tim Neavin from Beverly Hills looking for answers to some of those questions from men and woman who feel they have hair loss or thinning hair, I

II

.=::::::::::::.-------

Why do we have hair, anyway? That's a great question. For many of us, life would be easier if we didn't have it. Hair probably evolved in humans to protect the scalp and face from the sun and rain. It may have even served to help retain heat. Today of course, hair on our head serves us more cosmetically than functional. For both men and women, hair has become another area on the body for us to accessorize and shape in fun and sexy ways. For many, it can even help characterize persona (hello, Carrot Top and Don King).

play major roles in our hair thickness and growth density. Some men are unfortunately dealt a hand that predisposes them to hair loss. In those cases, environmental influences such as diet and even medications can sometimes slow down the process - to an extent. While women don 't experience this male pattern loss of hair, they are still at risk of thinning based on genetics, diet, and even hairstyles!

What makes hair healthy and beautiful? For both men and women, "thick and full" are the hallmarks of beautiful hair. Straight, wavy, or curly are more personal preferences, but "thin and sparse" are not usually the look anyone is going for. Like anything else in the human body, both genetics and environment

Hairstyles? That's interesting. Is it true that ponytails can cause hair loss? Great question and "yes"! Excessive tension on the hair for prolonged periods of time can cause what is called 'traction

alopecia.' How long is too long? It's tough to say, and likely different for everyone. But the most common areas where one can see thinning or loss are the hairline and temple regions. Before the hair falls out, it can thin and become frizzy. Consider this an early warning sign. The main culprits of this rather prevalent problem include buns, chignons, twists, and various braids. The good news is that early stages of traction alopecia can usually be reversed. The better news is that it can be totally avoided with a looser pony or bun , or by changing hairstyles frequently to reduce traction damage.

Can what one eats affect the growth beautiful hair? For one, hair is protein. Thus, any diet in protein is going to challenge the scalp to produce beautiful, thick, and dense hair. Not only that, when protein storage in the ody is low, hair follicles may enter a "restin state". Thus, hair will not appear as be Iful and dense as it would with diets that' corporate enough protein. When it come 0 thick hair, protein is king .

It's important to note that protein is not the only important necessary component in thick, beautiful hair. Thus, super rich protein diets alone won't cu it. Equally important to protein is vitamins and nutrients. The list is long, but some of the important players included zinc, vitamin B5, folate, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin C, vitamin A, betacarotene, and 'ron, which is necessary for hair productia . The good news is that diets rich in fish and vegetables should cover all of these. So, be sure that the essential proteins, vitami s, and minerals are included routinely in y ,ur diet to keep hair thick AN D in a growing phase. Should your diet fall short, there are several over the counter "hair" upplements that can probably give your hair a boost. But of course, nothing beats a healthy, balanced diet.

THERE IS NOTHING in my world like having beautiful, healthy hair. It's important to me that all my clients feel amazing about their hair. When they walk into a room, I want them to get everyone's attention, lighting up the room with their shiny glow whether it's short, medium or long hair. As I believe you are what you eat, have done more research on how to eat for healthy hair. If you are experiencing some issues with your hair do know there is always a solution for any problem.

Putting The ~ on Sunscreens Deciphering the code of caring for your skin

We all know that EAUTIFU ' I I IQ I ~~Q~ TILlI D RT I1npnl Ie , Our skin is the biggest organ we have and it is susceptible to mistreatment from many factors in our life, We love the sun and our bodies crave the Vitamin 0 that it provides/ but balancing a healthy glow and avoiding damage can be tricky,

36

WWWVIVAGLAMMAGAZINE.COM

Those of us concerned with our skin's health, elasticity, and youthful appearance often use a combination of methods, including protective clothing, utilizing shade, fun hats and glasses, and of course, sunscreen. But it turns out that the sun's harmful rays aren't the only danger we need to dodge in our quest for perfect skin. The very thing that is meant to protect us, our sunscreen , usually has toxic chemicals in it, and could easily be contributing to premature aging and skin damage, causing us additional harm. So, here's the skinny on the key ingredients in most sunscreens:

MOST SUNSCREENS CONTAIN TOXIC CHEMICALS Out of 2,000 sunscreens tested , the Environmental Working Group (EWG) found that more than 75% contained toxic chemicals that can increase your risk of cancer and other health issues. Most sunscreens contain oxybenzone and butylparaben, both of which are listed as moderate to high "overall concern " for health hazards by the EWG . Oxybenzone is a particularly penetrative chemical that raises concerns of biochemical or cellular level changes and endocrine disruption . It also happens to be the most common allergen found in sunscreens .. . and the allergic reactions are triggered by sun exposure. Butylparaben is an antimicrobial preservative and has been found to cross body barriers and enter the body through the lungs, GI tract, and skin epithelium (National Toxicological Program). And according to the International Chemical Secretariat, butylparaben may also decrease

sperm function and alter metabolic hormones. These are not the only ingredients to run from either. There is a long list of confusing, difficult to pronounce chemicals that we don 't want on our skin - or put into the environment around us. So what about harming the world around us?

YOUR SUNSCREEN MAY BE HARMING MARINE LIFE You may think that you alone, with a thin layer of standard sunscreen can do no harm. But it turns out this is untrue. A study published in the Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology found that even a small squirt of sunscreen in six Olympicsized pools is enough to cause disruption of coral growth, kill coral, and contribute to the increasing rate of coral bleaching. I've spared you the details of how it actually does this to the coral, as it broke my heart. What can you do to protect our coral reefs, sea life, and aquatic ecosystems? Start by using a reef-safe sunscreen! But as for our own healthy bodies, we must go even further. There are several categories of sunscreen to choose from; chemical free , organic, natural, and reef safe. So it seems the 'good news' is that the level of toxins you enjoy is up to you! While it can still be very confusing for consumers to untangle all of the different categories and claims made by manufacturers, one thing is for sure ... we believe the more natural, the better for us.

) arely do you meet a person who has such a charitable heart that they have devoted eir life to helping others. Top fashion designer lonica Moldovianu exemplifies this. From her humble beginnings in Romania as a volunteer; being a Social Worker in England ; to becoming a model; and transforming into a world famous fashion designer, lonica's path has been one filled with excitement, challenges, and joy. lonica started life in Galati, a small town by the Danube River in Romania. She had a passion for clothing as a child and her mom, a seamstress, was her inspiration. From a young age, she knew she would one day design her own clothes. As a teenager, lanica's passion for helping others led her to volunteering for various NGO's helping street children and orphans in Romania. lonica told us that at the time, fashion wasn't really seen as a career in her home country and since she was already involved in the humanitarian field the decision to become a Social Worker was easy for her. Life then took lonica to UK where she lived and continued to practice as a Social Worker for many more years. lonica told us, "My passion for fashion and helping others I cannot separate. Itls who I am ... my biggest dream and ambition as a successful entrepreneur is to make a difference in the world. I am a strong believer in a world where a child should know no war; I am an Advocate for War Child, helping children and : ~;;~~~:.i families in conflict and post-conflict zones rebuild their lives .. by creating sustainable programs in education, justice, and economic opportunities." Today, lonica is a celebrated fashion designer. In describing her current collection, she said that she loves to see femininity and elegance in a woman. So she created a ready to wear style that is classic and timeless, feminine and elegant, but with an added European touch. lonica has succeeded in everything that she has set out to accomplish, and we wondered what advice she might have on achieving our dreams. She referred to a quote that is very dear to her, "What is real and what is lasting is who you truly are and what you're meant to bring." She explained this quote further by saying, "To me that is the quintessence of true happiness and living. It all starts with a discovery of self, your values, passions and dreams. My advice to you is to never give up on your passion . Once you find it give yourself 100% to it. If you are in search of success, follow your passion first and success will follow you."

Many may see producer OSMR RIVERAIS life on social media and be impressed by the opulent lifestyle that he leads, He is the owner of Rivera Productions and rubs elbows with some of Hollywood1s elite, You see him traveling the world via private jet and sailing to luxurious parties on super yachts, But Oskar isnlt here in Hollywood to be famous" ,his goal is to leave a legacy, has been in the business of producing for over 5 years now. In fact, he has been working non-stop since he came to America from his native EI Salvador. When asked how he got started, Oskar said, "I started out in Hollywood as an actor and model. Because of this, I was asked to attend networking events; often times as an interviewer. I enjoyed talking with and learning about people, but I wanted to do more; I wanted to help. It was there that I began hosting and eventually producing events. Before I knew it, I was branding myself and had people from all over the world working with me."

What does Rivera Productions do exactly? They produce luxurious events, everything from world premieres to launching parties. They also handle public relations for independent clients, such as liquor companies, plastic surgeons, and fashion, beauty, and cosmetic companies. Their specialty is lUxury branding, and as a business partner with Celebrity Connected, they are able to place products in gifting suites and award shows for every event in town. Oh, and did we mention Oskar is also one of the producers of LA Fashion Week?! Oskar understands the importance of giving back. He feels blessed to be doing the work that he does, and

loves contributing by working with non-profits. He maintains a vital role with Walking with Anthony, a nonprofit organization that helps patients with spinal cord injuries. He is also instrumental in the production of City Gala, an event that raises money for children living on the streets. Oskar believes in God and His timing. Oskar told us, "I leave everything to God. If you leave your expectations to people, you will be disappointed. But you will never be disappointed in God. Life is always about God's timing. " In fact, Oskar believes there are three key elements to his success; his education; family values instilled in him by his mother; and his belief in God. "I believe what you give is what you get. " Regarding his legacy, he believes what is most important is how others will remember you. Therefore, his success is always about helping other people accomplish their goals. His concept is simple: by linking good people together, you will forge successful partnerships. Because Oskar has developed his abundant book of connections through friendship, and thinks for the long term rather than short term, it is natural that this commitment and loyalty is maintained consistently through his professional dealings as well. This is not the way we have found most people in production and public relations to operate. He told us, "My network is a powerful one, but it is because I have developed real relationships with people. I never use people. Instead, I go to the extra mile for everyone. This is what has given me the reputation and strong network that I have. "

RIVERA PRODUCTIONS

What advice does Oskar have for others aiming to succeed? "Be focused and always have a target. Learn quickly. If there is something you don 't know, go out and learn as much about it as you can. " ... And perhaps this is the hallmark of someone who is entirely self-made.

Douglas Thaddeus

JEFFERY As I look up from my latte) I lock eyes with a very striking) gray-haired gentleman, Upon initial impression) he is well dressed) impeccably groomed with cheekbones that you can slice bread with,

He

is the quintessential tall, dark and handsome man, as if straight out of a Marlboro ad . This is my first impression of entrepreneur, businessman, and actor Douglas Thaddeus Jeffery. A broad, easy smile puts me at ease and we sit down for what I know will be an interesting conversation. He looks like he has led a life of relative ease and comfort. I realize quickly, however, that this is not the case. He candidly told me, "Childhood was not easy for me; everything was a challenge. I

didn't excel in school. I was the overweight, fat kid that everyone made fun of, and I ended up both bulimic and anorexic. Plus, I grew up on the 'wrong side of town' and my family went through financial hardships. But in my heart, I always knew there was something more out there and I wanted to find out what it was." Many, many years later, Doug was working as a croupier in Atlantic City, when Chippendale's in New York discovered him . He soon began traveling throughout

Doug gave up his acting career to focus on HIS COMPANY the world as their new MC. Before long, he became a male model in New York and began booking regular catalogue work, commercials, and even appearing on the covers of Harlequin romance novels. In fact, Fabio was a cohort whom he'd pass in the halls! Eventually, it seemed everyone he knew was moving westward. His lifelong dream was to become an actor,

so why not go with the flow? He moved to Los Angeles and started his life all over. I asked him what it was like moving to the West Coast. Doug laughed, "It was very challenging. I had huge clients in New York as a model. In Los Angeles, I had to grab whatever I could take, while pursuing my acting career. I was a bartender, personal trainer, and picked up side jobs to make ends meet. The money I had saved up in NYC ran out quickly. started building furniture on the side to supplement my income. One day, I was asked by a friend to help on a movie set. This led me to create 41 Sets, and the rest is history." Doug ended up creating this successful set design company. Within a few short years, it became a multi-million dollar business, and has been the industry go-to for the past 15 years." But there is always a price for success. Doug gave up his acting career to focus on his company. He said, "Looking back, I believe my journey was predetermined. And dealing emotionally with the death of my mother made me realize what is really important in life. There are no short cuts. You have to run the

course set before you. Now, so many years later, I've decided once again to pursue my passion of acting . I believe that no matter what, you will always come back to your true desires in life. I mean, come on, can you imagine starting over at 54? But as much as I wanted to be an actor 15 years ago, maybe the time wasn 't right. I'm brand new and starting over again. I'm a deer in headlights. If it weren't for my partner, Candace, whom I love to death, I would have no idea what to do," he said smiling. Listening to Doug made me realize that no matter what age you are, we can all identify with someone transitioning from one stage of life to another. After all, life is nothing but a series of chapters. And these chapters are filled with challenges, failures, and successes. Here is a successful businessman who was once a working actor, and is now going back to the past to fulfill his future. Out of curiosity, I pushed him about his goals. After a few moments, Doug told me, "My goals today are to chase my dream. I have unfinished business. I have come so close in the past and had opportunities that would have changed my life. lowe it to myself not to give up. The beauty is that all of my successes and failures have made me who I am today. Now, when I go to an audition, all of this comes through my eyes. I hope they appreciate who I am and what I have become. After all, that is all that you really have in life. " My afternoon with Doug ended on a note of positivity and hope. And judging by what I heard, his were words spoken of a life lived to the fullest.. .with many more chapters to come!

There1s a gun on the table - but ifs only a movie prop, I guess you can expect this when you are sitting at the home office of Hollywood legend Bobbie Chance, Bobbie is known for taking some of the Industris greatest actors to new levels of performance, An iconoclast she is opinionated outgoing and interesting, I

I

Ugon

entering her home in Los Angeles , CA, I stepped into the 2-story foyer. Her husband design d their house, and it is elegant and sophisticated, yet warm and inviting. As we entered her office, I was delighted to see movie posters from the Frankie Avalon

I

She had just come to California from Florida and was living in sunny Malibu with her new husband when her uncle suggested she visit a friend of his. The friend told her, "You look like a Swedish girl, and they are looking for one for a starring role in a new film with Frankie and Annette. Go and read for it."

Today, Bobbie is known as one of HOLLYWOOD'S FOREMOST acting coaches, although she does not refer to herself as an acting teacher per se. and Annette Funicello beach party era. Bobbie began her acting career in Hollywood during the 1960's and told us about how it was an entirely new era for movies. Previously, there were no films for teenagers and the beach movies had started a completely new trend.

58

Bobbie continued , "I was just open and available to the universe. I did a monologue with a Swedish accent, and I was making it up as I went along . The funniest thing is I didn't know how to end it, so I walked out . .. and left the building! They couldn't find me! They

called me and said that I had gotten the starring role." That impromptu meeting led to a seven-year studio contract for Bobbie. Her partner in most of the beach films was film legend, Buster Keaton. Bobbie fondly remembered him and said, "Buster Keaton to me was just a sweet, dear old man. I was seventeen and didn't know who he was. He was a genius, and most people say he was more gifted a comic than Charlie Chaplin. Buster took me under his wing. In fact, I had lunch with him in his dressing room for over two years . He taught me rope tricks. He never smiled; that was his trademark. I got him to laugh and smile. When he smiled, he was missing two teeth in the front! He taught me everything about comedy and it was an honor." Bobbie continued acting and eventually moved on from the beach movies to more dramatic material . She said, "They were grooming me to be the next Marilyn Monroe. That was cool, but I didn't want to do that. I wanted to do heavier stuff." I was walking down Mulholland Drive when David Carradine saw me. He asked if I wanted a starring role with him and Barbara Hershey. I told him to contact my manager. He explained it wasn 't that sort of film. He said that they were all going to Grant 's Pass, Oregon. They were all going to sleep in sleeping bags outside and play guitar. I told him I needed a hotel room. After the first day of shooting there was a knock at the door and it was the producers asking to take a shower! I was the only one who got a hotel room. They were all swimming in the river in Grant's Pass and sleeping on rocks!"

with her actors, she explained, "We want the actor to work. A few years ago, we celebrated over 1000 actor showcases. That means I have directed over 85,000 scenes. This is more than Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard, and Steven Spielberg put together. Our actors put up their work in front of A-list people every week." She referred to her style of acting as "the method of no method approach to acting ." What does this mean, I asked? "Actors inherently want to please and be wonderful. They wonder 'will they like me or hire me? ' Our work is the antithesis of this. It is about the actor and the part. I'm in the parts business. And our actors have to get to a place where only the part is important, not them . The part gets the actor hired, not vice-versa. The part will never let the actor down. It is always the other way around . And you can quote me on that." Bobbie believes that what matters for an actor is their hunger, passion, and drive. And this is seen in her classes. I asked how long her classes typically run. She told me that they "are done when they are done. " She said, "The doors open at 7:30 pm . We have been there until 3:30 am! Martin Landau guest coached for me, and he was there until 3:45 in the morning! Art is different than business."

When I probed more deeply about her style of teaching, she said, "Acting is about being generous generous of spirit, soul, talent, nature, fire, vulnerability, and the ability to rise. I'm not a teacher, but I will show you the way in . And the BOBBIE way in is generosity."

BELIEVES

Bobbie has coached A-list actors such as Drew Barrymore, Scarlett that what matters Johansson, and Giovanni Ribisi, among others. I asked her what for an actor is makes an actor great? She replied, "You cannot keep talent a secret in Today, Bobbie is known as one of their hunger, Hollywood 's foremost acting coaches, Hollywood. An actor's talent rises; passion, and drive. you are not plucked from obscurity. It although she does not refer to herself as an acting teacher per se . And she becomes a way of life. If the actor is in the arena and the actor acts, luck will find them . You also does not consider her school an acting school either. She explains, "Expressions Unlimited is not don't have to go out and sell yourself; it will find you. an acting school ; it is a place where actors can An actor has to have rocket ship fuel in their blood . come, hang out, and put up their work. I'm not a Talent rises, greatness rises." teacher. They can come and work on their auditions, and I take the actor to a new level of work, getting What did Bobbie teach me in the few hours we spent them to a place where they are free and don't have together? That it is vital to be generous of heart, it to be wonderful for anybody anymore." is better to give than to receive, and to always have compassion . How did you originally become interested in healthy eating and exercise? At an early age, after seeing a few loved ones with health issues, I learned that our bodies are our temples. It is entirely up to us what we feed our bodies and how we take care of them. During my college years, I took a nutrition class just for fun. It ended up becoming a huge passion of mine. I knew in that class

one thing that will always stay constant in a world that is always changing is how true we choose to be with ourselves. One of the most important things to you is to be able to look back on your life without regrets. What dreams did you want to follow and why? I believe that you can have many dreams. That's the beauty of being human. We have the ability to try as many things as we want. I started out as a nutritionisVpersonal trainer for 8 years. I loved every second of it. From that point on, nutrition and learning about how FOOD CAN BE OUR MEDICINE became my life. that I had found something I completely related to, and I fell in love. From that point on, nutrition and learning about how food can be our medicine became my life. You love to evolve in life and believe that nutrition and fitness have led you on a path to spirituality. What in your life indicated this and how did you know this was the path you were supposed to be on? I have been very spiritual ever since I was in high school. These days, I hear the word "spiritual" all over the place. For me, being spiritual means having a very deep, soulful level of understanding of our bodies, our surroundings, and the universe that surrounds us - and that is inside of us. This is something that is always a work in progress for me. I realize that I am constantly evolving, constantly changing, as we all are. Some of us choose to accept change more than others. I realize that change is inevitable. The

I had amazing training, sold 9 houses in my first 6 months, learned how to negotiate on behalf of my clients and most importantly, helped my clients find their new home. It was also very rewarding, but I knew there was something more out there for me. After moving back up to Northern California last year, I knew it was time to listen to the burning desire that is deep within my soul. I

have always loved being in front of the camera, being on stage, singing, and acting, and I knew in my heart that if I didn't give it a shot then I would live with regret. One thing I can count on for myself is that I will not look back on my life and "wish" I had tried something. Life is too short to not go after your heart's desire.

life has prepared me for the journey I am currently embarking on .

MUSIC AND THE PINEAL GLAND Last night I attended a strings and piano ensemble that featured the music of Mozart, Bach, and Piazzolla, to name a few. The point of the performance was to mix classical symphonies with a Latin flair created with the special talents of a Venezuelan-born pianist Gabriela Montero. It was lovely from beginning to end . Early in the performance, though, something magical happened. My pineal gland started tingling off the charts. What is the pineal gland and why is that important? The pineal gland is located in the center of the brain where the two hemispheres come together. It produces melatonin, which is involved in the synchronization of the circadian

In metaphysical

In metaphysical circles, this is also known as the third eye or the seat of the soul. This is important because the pineal gland is our direct link to the truth about who we are. And that is that we are powerful beings whose natural state is connection, peace, love and healing. You 'll know it's active when you feel tingling at the back of your head near that bump at the base of the skull . It's different than anything else you have felt before so you will know it if you experience this. From a spiritual perspective, it is in the active pineal gland that we know we are one with God/ Allah/ Supreme Being/the Universe, not separate, as we have been taught. It can be said that we are the universe. The fact that my pineal gland was tingling 'off the charts ' meant that it was highly active. It was this symphony that provided the spark for that activity.

MUSIC, WHOLE NUMBERS, AND THE UNIVERSE The pineal gland knows what Pythagoras discovered way back in the fifth century B.C.- that music is our direct connection to the universe and we are part of that connection . It just so happened that Pythagoras was experimenting with a stretched piece of cord which, when plucked, created a sound of a certain note. When Pythagoras halved the cord, stretched it and

my pineal gland experience last night that I started to research the health benefits of listening to music. -Boosts the Immune System and Reduces Pain-Studies have shown that music reduces the levels of the stress hormone, cortisol. When released in the body, cortisol is responsible for weakening the immune system, increasing blood pressure, increasing the risk of heart disease and lowering bone density. Cortisol is released during stress episodes. Science has shown that listening to just 50 minutes of uplifting, calming, or peaceful music per day has positive health effects. -Improves Sleep Quality - Stress is the most common factor in poor sleep quality. Music, however, reduces stress, thereby improving the potential for a better night's sleep.

plucked again, it created a sound one note higher and completely consonant with the first note. These sounds were extremely pleasing to the ear. Pythagoras believed numbers were keys to the universe and with his experiments with the stretched cord, he found that music is expressed in exact ratios of whole numbers. From that he concluded that music was the ordering principle of the universe. Pythagoras also believed that creating music was man's way of participating in the harmony of the universe. Anyone who has listened to classical music, relaxation music, or perhaps hemi-sync music for opening the human body's energy centers can attest to the power of such music and its ability to create amazing metaphysical and spiritual experiences. So listening to music can help your pineal gland get moving, but music has many other benefits, including those that improve our health.

MUSIC AND GOOD HEALTH Each of us has a favorite type of music. My mother loves country. My brother loves rock and roll and my sister loves the rock hits of the seventies. I like all types of music including classical, but it wasn't until

-Strengthens the Heart - Studies have shownthat music actually strengthens the heart muscle. This is great news for all who have suffered with heart disease or have had a heart attack. Regardless of the type of music you like to listen to, listening to your favorite music releases endorphins in the brain that improve vascular health. In fact, Massachusetts General Hospital found that heart patients who listened to music for 30 minutes a day had lower blood pressure rates and less distress than patients who did not listen to music.

Although it may not be everyone's favorite, classical music has some other health benefits you may find interesting. -Beethoven Fights Cancer - According to a study conducted by the Programme On co biology at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, exposing MCF-7 cells, which are linked to breast cancer, to Beethoven 's Fifth Symphony caused the destruction of cells, and two in five eventually died. So, get that classical channel programmed into your car stereo today.
