On one hand, we celebrate 101 years of the Mexican Revolution, officially celebrated on November 20th, and on the other hand, there is a revolution in tourism thanks to space travel which, starting last year, is being strongly promoted by the prestigious British firm Virgin Galactic, with a branch office in México located in Guadalajara. Revolución. Una palabra que dice mucho y que, de acuerdo con el diccionario, significa cambio o transformación radical y profunda respecto al pasado inmediato. Long Live The Mexican Revolution! O
ne hundred and one years ago, México’s history changed dramatically. Names such as Porfirio Díaz and Francisco I. Madero, back then México’s presidents, Francisco “Pancho” Villa and Emiliano Zapata, peasant and military leaders, changed México’s destiny during the Mexican Revolution. The war broke out on November 20th, 1910 following the declaration of war through the legendary “San Luis Plan” which resulted in the end of Porfirio Díaz’s government (Porfiriato). The legacy of this key event in México’s history is the countless buildings dating from the Porfiriato era, most of them located in México City. Buildings such as The Postal Service Office, the Fine Arts Palace, nowadays México City’s most emblematic symbol, and the Independence Monument better known as El Ángel, were part of México’s urban modernization. Other buildings representing the era are the Revolution Memorial and the Communications and Public Works Secretariat Building today known as the National Arts Museum (MUNAL). Here a few recommendations to understand and learn more about the history that changed the country: México City’s National Museum of the Revolution; Coahuila’s Museum of the Mexican Revolution; Pueblas’s Regional Museum of the Revolution; Tabasco’s Emiliano Zapata’s City Museum; and Chihuahua’s Historic Museum of the Mexican Revolution.

The Porfiriato Era The term Porfiriato refers to Porfirio Díaz’s term in office (34 years). Although he was considered a dictator, his period was marked by economic and urban progress across the country to the expense of social inequalities. French luxury and influence were evident in architecture and the way of life of the socialite.

Madero, entonces presidentes de la nación, así como Francisco “Pancho” Villa y Emiliano Zapata, líderes campesinos y militares, cambiaron el rumbo del país al protagonizar la Revolución Mexicana, la cual quedó establecida el 20 de noviembre de 1910 cuando se proclamó el levantamiento de armas en el legendario “Plan de San Luis”, del cual prosiguió el fin del Porfiriato. Ese gran parteaguas en la historia de México ha quedado reflejado en innumerables sitios representativos de la época del Porfiriato, que están localizados en su mayoría en la capital y los cuales contribuyeron a la modernidad urbana del país, tales como el Palacio Postal o el mismísimo Palacio de Bellas Artes, máximo símbolo de la Ciudad de México, lo mismo que el Monumento a la Independencia, más conocido como El Ángel. Otros edificios representativos del tema son el Monumento a la Revolución y el Palacio de la Secretaría de Comunicaciones y Obras Públicas, hoy conocido como el Museo Nacional de Arte (MUNAL). Algunos lugares para conocer más de esta historia que cambió al país, son el Museo Nacional de la Revolución de la Ciudad de México, el Museo de la Revolución Mexicana de Coahuila, el Museo Regional de la Revolución en Puebla, el Museo de la Ciudad de Emiliano Zapata en Tabasco y el Museo Histórico de la Revolución Mexicana, en Chihuahua.

In the beginning, the Mexican Revolution was driven and led by Francisco I. Madero, the politician who drafted the San Luis Plan (where he incited the populace to take up arms) to overthrow Porfirio Díaz and return the land seized by hacendados to the peasants. This sprouted uprisings across the country led by revolution leaders like “Pancho” Villa and Emiliano Zapata who later became Revolution heroes.
La Revolución Mexicana fue impulsada y encabezada en un principio por Francisco I. Madero, político que decretó el Plan de San Luis (en el que se incitaba a la población a levantarse en armas), con el objetivo de derrocar al dictador Porfirio Díaz y a al vez devolverle a los campesinos sus tierras quitadas por los hacendados. Esto conllevó a que surgieran en varias partes del país levantamientos armados comandados por revolucionarios como “Pancho” Villa y Emiliano Zapata, que a la postre se convirtieron en héroes de la Revolución Mexicana.

axaca is always an interesting place to visit; its numerous tourist attractions give the state a unique charm widely appreciated around the world. From November 1st to November 30th, Puerto Escondido’s heavenly beaches in the Mexican Pacific will host the yearly event “November Fest in Puerto Escondido”, now a traditional festival that has highly positioned this tourist destination due to the different sports, recreational, artistic and cultural activities held throughout the month. Among the most important events are: The Motocross Tournament; The International Surfing Tournament; The Boogieboard at Zicatela, ranked the third best beach in the world for surfing sports; and The International Sport & Sailfish Fishing Tournament. The Folk Dance Coast Festival is the main venue for ethnic and regional dance across the country, the perfect place
for the encounter of indigenous and black cultures settled along the coast. This festival has become a tradition and a space devoted to reflection that encourages all participants to embark upon a research about their dance and music traditions, and their traditional masks and musical instruments. In addition, the event calendar offers a biking route, a short marathon race, rumba, reggae and salsa concerts, a kite flying contest, arts and crafts sales, and a gastronomy festival. These activities are spiced with a Cultural Flea Market and different activities for the young, such as a hip-hop and break dance contests, an urban art show, not to mention soccer, beach volleyball and basketball games. The perfect finale for one of the feistiest months in beautiful Puerto Escondido will be the performance by Guelaguetza Infantil Calmecac and Chiquitita 2011 for the delight of the little ones.

he dream of every tourist of going beyond the planet’s frontiers is being fulfilled this year thanks to the British company Virgin Galactic, which just opened its Spaceport America in New México. Sir Richard Branson, its founder, has created the first commercial spaceline with ships that go up 62 miles from the ground, thus reaching zero-gravity just like astronauts achieve (although without the need to be part of a NASA crew). These great news will no doubt break the paradigms of our own traveling frontiers and will usher a new era for tourism. Virgin Galactic is a company that started test flights some time ago to take passengers out of this world, and started selling tickets for the experience of being close to the stars and admire the majesty of planet Earth from the outside, via a round sub-orbital flight. Currently, 450 people around the world have bought their ticket, priced at 200 thousand dollars, to travel into space and live this unique experience still expected to finalize by the end of 2010 with a first official flight. It is time to start saving and visit outside of Earth just as Stanley Kubrick envisioned in his legendary film “2001, A Space Odyssey”.
The Space Tourism An Option in Race Guadalajara Virgin Galactic is not the first or only company struggling to make outer space travel another option for tourists in search of unforgettable experiences (Space Adventures, Space Islands, and Space X among them). However, it’s the one currently at the forefront in offering suborbital flights, which are achieved by abandoning Earth’s atmosphere and experiencing zero-gravity. British entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson, founder of the space tourism company Virgin Galactic, just opened the first commercial spaceport in New México, United States, called Spaceport America. Branson plans to finish the test period in 2012 and begin with the first leisure trips into space.
Secretary of Tourism Gloria Guevara Manzo awarded Tamaulipas governor, Egidio Torre Cantú, the certificate crediting the Tula municipality as a Magical Town. During a work trip around the state, Guevara Manzo noted that with this designation, there are now 44 Magical Towns enrolled in this program, which allows to show tourists the wealth that exists in our country.

ovember is a very special month for Lorena Ochoa. First, from November 10th to 13th, the fourth “Lorena Ochoa Invitational by Banamex, JALISCO IT HAPPENS WITHIN YOU” golf tournament was held in the beautiful green fields of the Guadalajara Country Club. And second, her 30th birthday comes on November 15th, rounding up a month where she and her career as the best Mexican golfer of all, are the center of attention. And it’s no mean feat. Lorena Ochoa started playing golf when she was 5 years old, and at 6 she already had her first state title. From then onwards, her career in this sport has climbed stratospherically, winning
countless national and international trophies, until 2010, the year where she decided to put her career on hold to focus on personal projects and give a greater drive to her Lorena Ochoa A.C. Foundation, which since 2004 supports organizations devoted to the education of marginalized children and young people. However, Lorena has never abandoned her passion for this sport, as she is very attentive of her academy “Ochoa Golf Academy”, that is located at Turtle Dunes Acapulco. For now, the “Lorena Ochoa Invitational by Banamex, JALISCO IT HAPPENS WITHIN YOU” is once more one of the major events in the city. Congratulations, Lorena.

oviembre es un mes muy especial para Lorena Ochoa. En primer lugar, se llevó a cabo del 10 al 13 de noviembre el cuarto torneo de golf “Lorena Ochoa Invitational presentado por Banamex, Jalisco sucede DENTRO de ti” en los verdes y hermosos campos del Guadalajara Country Club. Y en segundo lugar, festejará su cumpleaños número 30 este 15 de noviembre, para completar así un mes en el que ella y su trayectoria como la mejor golfista de todos los tiempos en México, son los protagonistas. Y no es para menos. Lorena Ochoa comenzó a jugar golf desde los 5 años y a los 6 ya tenía su primer título estatal. En adelante, su carrera dentro de este deporte ha sido meteórica, ganando
infinidad de trofeos a nivel nacional e internacioal, hasta el 2010, año en el que decidió hacer una pausa en su carrera para dedicarse a proyectos personales y a impulsar más su Fundación Lorena Ochoa A.C., la cual desde el 2004 apoya a organizaciones dedicadas a la educación de niños y jóvenes de escasos recursos. Sin embargo, Lorena no ha dejado del todo su pasión por este deporte, ya que está muy al pendiente de su Academia de golf “Ochoa Golf Academy” ubicada en Turtle Dunes Acapulco. adre del exitoso corredor de autos Fórmula 1 Checo Pérez, amigo de Felipe Calderón y persona realizada en la vida, Antonio Garibay comparte en exclusiva con VIVA MÉXICO parte de lo que ha sido su trayectoria, desde sus épocas de corredor de autos hasta estos días en los que, afirma, la vida le ha dado todo. “Me considero diferente, bendecido de Dios, un triunfador, un guerrero, un luchador incansable”, afirma orgulloso. A sus 52 años, Toño Garibay está feliz y pleno de vida. Sus comienzos fueron desde ceros y hoy día está en la cima. “Todo esto de las carreras empezó con un gran amigo mío, Paco Fierro. Yo lavaba sus carros de carreras a la edad de 12 años. Fui entablando una relación con él y un día me dio la oportunidad de manejar por primera vez un carro de carreras”, recuerda. En esas épocas era taxista y, confiesa, no le sobraba el dinero. “Era tanta mi afición que no me daba pena (ser taxista), trabajaba todo lo que podía
para tener muy bien mis carros”. Hoy día, esa anécdota ha quedado muy atrás. Don Antonio Garibay, campeón nacional de la Copa Marlboro, “sembró” bastante y actualmente se dedica a cosechar sus logros, a pesar de haberse retirado en 1987 por un accidente que le aplastó dos vértebras. Eso lo llevó a incursionar en el papel de representante de otros corredores, como Adrián Fernández, con quien logró muchas cosas. Y por supuesto, de su propio hijo “Checo” Pérez, a quien desde pequeño apoyó en su sueño de ser un corredor exitoso. La historia de Antonio y sus hijos (Antonio y Sergio, ambos corredores) continúa. “Yo llevo cuatro amigos presidentes de la República; Felipe Calderón es un gran amigo, lo conocí siendo diputado, jugábamos fútbol juntos y el día de hoy adora a mis hijos, los considera sus sobrinos, les da muy buenos consejos, les dice: ‘tú concéntrate en ganar, y lo demás nosotros lo arreglamos’” bromea.

Antonio Garibay, the father of F1 pilot Checo Pérez, a friend to Felipe Calderón and a self-realized human being talks about his career from his days as a race car pilot to the present when, as he confesses, life has given him everything he desired in exclusive for Viva México. “I consider myself different, blessed by God, successful, an unwavering warrior and a fighter”, he proudly noted. At 52, Toño Garibay is happy and full of life, and as he reflects on his past and talks about his days as a race car pilot, he denotes the same pride. He began from scratch and today he is at the top of his world. “This entire racing thing started with a dear friend of mine, Paco Fierro. When I was 12 I used to wash his race cars. We built a close relationship and one day he offered me the chance to pilot a race car for the first time in my life. He really didn’t want to loan me a car and it took him a long time to do it. He thought that by doing so he was going to ruin my life because he said the only way to leave this profession was in a coffin”, he recalls. Back then he was a taxi driver and money was rather scarce, as he confesses. “I did all kinds of jobs to keep my race cars in top condition. I was a cabbie. I remember I used to go to the race track on my cab with my race car in tow. I was the only one
who did that, the only cabbie doubling as a race car pilot. My passion was so deep inside me that I didn’t feel ashamed to do anything; I worked hard to keep my cars in good shape”. Today this belongs in the anecdote book. Antonio Garibay was the Marlboro Cup national champ and today he reaps the fruits of his efforts, even despite his retirement in 1987 after an accident that crushed two vertebrae. This was precisely the reason why he decided to represent other pilots like Adrián Fernández with whom he accomplished many things. Needless to say, he also represented his own son “Checo” Pérez and supported his childhood dream of becoming a successful race car pilot. “I always told him that he had to be the best in the world either as a race car pilot, as an architect or as a physician”. And the saga of Antonio and his children (Antonio and Sergio, both race car pilots) continues. “I have been friends with four presidents of the country: Carlos Salinas, Ernesto Zedillo, Vicente Fox, and Felipe Calderón. Felipe is a good friend of mine; I met him when he was a congressman. We played soccer together and today he loves my children and treats them as his nephews; he gives them good advise telling them, ‘You guys focus on making it to the podium, we’ll take care of the rest’”, Antonio jokes.

El golf como la fuente de la juventud

iene 91 años y aún hace muy buenos swings. Su vitalidad sorprende a cualquiera, sobre todo, cuando está en los campos de golf. La señora Anita Yanomé es una de las jugadoras más longevas de este deporte en la ciudad, el cual practica semana a semana en el Guadalajara Country Club, donde es una de las consentidas junto con la exitosa Lorena Ochoa. No juega de manera profesional, sino más bien para divertirse y pasar el rato con sus amigas. Tiene diez hijos, 28 nietos, 18 bisnietos y afirma que el golf es su pasión y algo que la mantiene joven. Comenzó a practicar este deporte hace ya más de 50 años, pero desde hace 35 lo hace de manera ininterrumpida. Cada miércoles, religiosamente, acude a los campos del Club para hacer lo que más le apasiona en la vida: jugar golf. La señora Yanomé ha jugado en prácticamente todos los campos del país, inclusive ha ganado torneos y trofeos de plata, pero actualmente lo hace sólo por hobby. Todo comenzó por influencia de su esposo, el japonés Ernesto Yanomé, de quien hace años enviudó. “Él influyó bastante para que me gustara el golf, aunque antes eran otros tiempos y no se veía muy bien que las mujeres jugaran este deporte”, recuerda. La jovialidad y energía que conserva a sus 91 años de edad, se lo debe al ejercicio diario y al haber practicado yoga por más de 20 años. Además de mantenerse activa jugando golf una vez a la semana, la señora Yanomé acude al gimnasio de manera disciplinada dos días por semana. De igual manera se levanta muy temprano por las mañanas y adquiere así la primera energía del día. Eso, y una gran pasión por el golf hacen que se mantenga más joven de lo que muchos piensan.

he is 91 years old and still has very good swings. Her vitality surprises everyone, especially in the golf course. Mrs. Anita Yanomé is one of the oldest players of this sport in the city, which she plays every week at the Guadalajara Country Club, where she is one of the favorites along with the successful Lorena Ochoa. She doesn’t play professionally, but to have fun and spend some time with her friends. She has ten children, 28 grandchildren, 18 grand-grand-children, and she says that golf is her passion and what keeps her young. She started playing golf more than 50 years ago, but only started playing uninterruptedly 35 years ago. Every Wednesday she visits the Club’s golf courses religiously to do what she is most passionate about in her life: playing golf. Mrs. Yanomé has basically played in every golf course in the country, and has even won tournaments and silver trophies, but currently it is just a hobby. Everything began with goading from her husband, Japanese-born Ernesto Yanomé, from whom she widowed years ago. “He was a big influence in me liking golf, although those were different times and women playing golf was something that was not very well regarded”, she remembers. She owes the jocularity and energy she keeps at her 91 years of age to daily exercise and having practiced yoga for more than 20 years. In addition of keeping herself active by playing golf once a week, Mrs. Yanomé visits the gym in a disciplined twice-per-week basis. She also rises very early in the morning to get her first energy in the morning. This, plus a great passion for golf, keeps her looking much younger than many people think.
