Asa quintessential figure in the world of blues and rock, Jimmy Vivino embodies what it means to be a true musician. Known to many as Conan O’Brien’s musical director for 26 remarkable years, Vivino has been a constant in the music scene for more than five decades.
“I’m just a bluesman with a job,” Vivino said, reflecting on his prominent yet tumultuous career. “I’ve been doing this professionally since I was 16, so that’s 54 years working. I’ve always been a worker but haven’t written a lot of my own songs, I’ve always written for other people.”
That changed recently. This veteran guitarist, bandleader and producer— dubbed “a blues man with a job”—is hitting the road to celebrate the release of his debut album, “Gonna Be 2 of Those Days,” which dropped on Feb. 14, under the auspices of Gulf Coast Records.
“During COVID, after a couple of weeks of watching cable news and stressing about the whole thing, I turned to the blues,
Jimmy Vivino Set to Rock Local Venues with Debut Album
By Keith Loria
which is really just a complaint set to music,” Vivino said. “We all have situations in our lives, and the record turned out to be all of my experiences turned into one album. I found that singing about personal experience is the most gratifying way to write songs. It’s about everyone I met along the way.”
The album boasts an impressive lineup of guest artists, including guitar virtuoso Joe Bonamassa and Lovin' Spoonful's John Sebastian.
“We cut nine songs in my basement and another three up at Woodstock, and then I went into multiple studios to do some overdubs, but it’s a pretty honest representation of us playing live,” Vivino said. “Mike Zito of Gulf Coast Records just has the best label and I never encountered this kind of care with a record label before.”
With an illustrious career intertwined with legends like Keith Richards, Warren Haynes, and Elvis Costello, Vivino’s journey through the music landscape has been rich, colorful and inspiring.
This month, Vivino and his band will be bringing their electrifying performance to two notable venues—Encore in Columbia, Maryland on March 13 and Jammin Java in Vienna, Virginia on March 15.
“I’m traveling with my trio; Mark Teixeira on drums and Jesse Williams on bass, and we’ve been playing together for a long time,” Vivino said. “Mostly I’m going to be playing songs from my new album, and this is the first time I ever toured on a record of my own.”
Both shows promise to be an immersive experience into the world of blues, soul and rock n' roll, showcasing Vivino’s deeprooted passion for live performances.
“Of course there’s going to be other stuff that I do, and by the time we get to Virginia, we’re going to be really having a great time,” Vivino said. “My shows are a combination of history and the music. Over the years, I’ve learned from some of the greatest, who always have a good story about the music and about the history. The idea is to engage the audience as much as possible.”
His love for performance shines through in every show and he relishes the chance to connect with audiences in intimate venues—perhaps a reflection of his early roots in the New York City music scene where he played with countless artists who shaped his artistic journey.
“I learned early on that you have to work— there’s nothing like playing live music and
meeting people,” Vivino said, recalling his experiences with musical greats like Levon Helm and Phoebe Snow who have shaped his understanding of the craft.
With a rich tapestry of influences and collaborations, including time spent playing with the likes of James Cotton and Laura Nyro, it’s clear why Vivino describes his friends as family—the support network of mentors has played a pivotal role in his growth.
“My whole goal in life has always been to work with artists that stepped out of my record collection and I was very lucky that even before [Conan] that I had worked with a lot of heroes and became friends with so many blues greats,” Vivino said. “If you respect the records, the artists will respond in kind.”
He worked for Conan for 26 years, and now that that part of his career is over, Vivino is able to get back on the road and travel the country playing the music he loves.
Tickets for both shows are selling quickly. Whether you’re a long-time admirer or a newcomer to Vivino’s music, this is an opportunity to witness a master of his craft.
As Vivino prepares to take the stage, his mantra reverberates: Stay true to the blues, keep working and never lose sight of the joy that comes from playing live.
“You haven’t seen a blues show like this in a long time,” Vivino said. “It’s everything I learned in my whole career put into one show.” v

Exploring Delaware’s Hidden Gem: The Nanticoke Heritage Byway
By Linda Barrett
For those looking to escape the well-trodden tourist paths, Delaware’s Nanticoke Heritage Byway offers a scenic and history-filled adventure. This 40-mile route winds through charming small towns, historic landmarks, and stunning landscapes, providing a glimpse into the region’s cultural and natural heritage. Whether you’re a history buff, nature lover, or simply enjoy a leisurely drive, the Byway is worth the trip.
A Journey Through History
The Nanticoke River, the heart of this route, has been home to the Nanticoke Indian Tribe for centuries. The name translates to “People of the Tidewater,” and their history predates European settlement. Captain John Smith met the Nanticokes in 1608 while exploring the river, and a monument at Phillips Landing Recreational Area commemorates this encounter.
To delve deeper into this rich heritage, visit the Nanticoke Indian Museum—the only Native American museum in Delaware. Designated a National Historic Landmark, it houses artifacts, artwork, and traditional clothing, offering an intimate look at the tribe’s enduring culture.
Visit Seaford: A Town Steeped in Time
Ross Mansion
Once home to Delaware’s 29th governor, William Henry Harrison Ross, this Italianate mansion has a storied past. Ross, a Confederate sympathizer, was charged with treason by President Lincoln and allegedly escaped to England hidden inside an apple crate. Today, visitors can tour the recently-restored mansion and its grounds, which include the Ross Events Center and Delaware’s only remaining quarters for enslaved people, offering a stark reminder of the past.
Photos by Linda Barrett
For a unique experience, attend a Victorian Tea at the mansion, where three-tiered trays of finger sandwiches, scones, and cranberry mimosas transport you to another era. (Check their calendar for upcoming events.)
Seaford Museum
Housed in a former post office, the Seaford Museum is a hidden gem featuring interactive exhibits on Delaware’s history. Highlights include a 22-foot mural by local artist Jack Lewis, a 42,000-year-old piece of cypress, and exhibits on the Underground Railroad, the infamous Mary Cannon, the DuPont factory (birthplace of nylon) and a fascinating model railroad. Don’t miss the Webb Exhibit Room, dedicated to Dr. Jane Rigby, a Seaford native, astrophysicist at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, and Senior Project Scientist for the James Webb Space Telescope.
Cannon-Maston House
The oldest surviving brick home in Sussex County, the Cannon-Maston House dates back to 1727. Currently under restoration, it is set to open as a museum in 2027. See if you can spot the initials of Mary Smith Cannon etched into the brickwork and spot bricks marked with tiny fingerprints— evidence of enslaved children who helped make them.
Woodland Schoolhouse
Built in 1913 and used until 1929, this oneroom schoolhouse has been restored for school trips and history enthusiasts. Step inside and imagine a time when all grades learned together in a single classroom.
Visit Laurel & Bethel: Echoes of
the Past
Old Christ Church
One of the most remarkable stops along the Byway is Old Christ Church in Laurel. Built in 1772, this entirely wooden church remains unaltered, preserving a rare glimpse into 18th-century architecture, with the acoustics of the barrel-vaulted ceiling providing an unforgettable experience. The surrounding yard holds the grave of former Delaware Governor Nathaniel Mitchell and an angelic statue overlooking Broad Creek. Note: Services are held only during summer due to the lack of modern heating and cooling.
Bethel Maritime Museum
Bethel was once a thriving shipbuilding hub, and the Bethel Maritime Museum honors this legacy. Housed in a former tworoom schoolhouse, the museum features model schooners, sailing rams, a captain’s belongings, and photographs and artifacts from Delaware’s maritime past.
Bethel Market
For a nostalgic step back in time, visit the Bethel Market. Originally built in 1900 as a general store, this charming spot offers ice cream, sandwiches, and a touch of oldfashioned Americana with its creaky screen door, wooden floors and vintage decor.
Outdoor Adventures on the Byway
The Nanticoke Heritage Byway isn’t just about history—it’s also an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise.
• Float down the Nanticoke River: Whether by kayak, canoe, or boat, the river provides a serene way to explore the landscape.
• Explore Trap Pond State Park: Enjoy fishing, boating, hiking, or camping in one of Delaware’s most beautiful natural areas.
• Ride the historic Woodland Ferry: This free ferry connects Woodland and Bethel, offering a short but scenic trip across the river. On the Woodland side, look for Cannon Hall, a Georgian-style home built in 1812 that’s listed on the National Historic Register. It is currently being restored.
Dining & Drinks
Brimming Horn Meadery
For a unique tasting experience, stop at Brimming Horn Meadery in Seaford, specializing in honey-based meads with names inspired by Norse mythology. Our favorites included the berryinfused meads like Björnbar (honey and blackberry) and Lofnabloon (honey, lemon, lavender, hibiscus, rosemary and cardamom), and the Myrkwood, a black cherry/black currant wine.
Bon Appetit
Just across the street from the meadery, local favorite Bon Appetit serves up classic French cuisine in a cozy setting. We thoroughly enjoyed baked salmon in a delicate cream sauce and a rich French onion soup.
The Dairy Bar
This no-frills diner in Seaford is a beloved breakfast and lunch spot. Their lumpmeat crabcake sandwiches are a must-try. But if you order the sweet tea, be warned—it’s really sweet!
Abbott’s on Broad Creek
For dining with a waterfront view, head to Abbott’s on Broad Creek in Laurel. This modern American restaurant offers locally sourced dishes, Sunday brunch, and a relaxing deck perfect for happy hour drinks.
Where to Stay
For a comfortable and convenient overnight stay, the Hampton Inn Seaford offers a central location with modern amenities, including free parking, Wi-Fi, a fitness center and an indoor pool. Plus, a complimentary hot breakfast gets you ready for another day of exploring.
The Nanticoke Heritage Byway is more than just a drive—it’s a journey through time, nature, and local culture. Whether you come for the history, outdoor activities, or small-town charm, this hidden gem in Delaware promises an unforgettable adventure. v
Le Bistro
Yet Another Must-try Gastronomic Destination on Vienna's Church Street
by Allison Chase Sutherland
LeBistro is yet another excellent culinary find on Church Street in Vienna owned by Nancy Sabbagh with her husband, renowned Executive Chef Roberto Donna of Roberto's Ristorante Italiano just across the street and down a few blocks. Le Bistro's Chef Steve Scott has been working with Roberto since 1989 at Galileo, Laboratorio di Galileo I Matti, Bebo, Al Dente, and Radicchio. He attended culinary school in Bologna and also cooked in fine establishments outside of Torino.
Upon arriving at Le Bistro, you will encounter a clean white building which welcomes you in to a warm, cozy interior. Just inside, you will be greeted by a wall of art deco framed posters to set the mood of the bustling, lively scene before you. The space manages to combine a feeling of intimacy with camaraderie. Those that run
the restaurant, including the affable and charming maître d’ Fulop Kosz, make you feel right at home among the stylish decor. Once comfortably seated, start off with an exquisitely smooth Paté de Campagne, with pork, duck confit, and chicken liver, served with cornichons, frisée salad, nicely complemented by a sharp Dijon as well as a rustic whole grain mustard accompanied with sliced French baguette. Next up, go for the chef's seasonal velvety Butternut squash Granny Smith apple celeriac purée soup with a black truffle crème fraîche topped with fried spinach on top. Before the main course, it's always nice to have a fresh salad, in this case, Salade Lyonnaise with frisée, poached egg, lusciously flavorful smoked bacon lardons, croutons, and house vinaigrette, just as one would expect at an authentic French bistro.
Photos credit: Allison Chase Sutherland
With the usual suspect selections such as Onion Soup Gratin with dry sherry, French baguette, gruyère cheese, and fresh lemon thyme sauce; Filet of Trout Almandine with white wine lemon thyme sauce, almonds, capers, currents, and pomme purée; and Bouillabaisse of Cod with shrimp, mussels, pomme purée, and rouille croutons, you soon start to wonder which arrondissement you're in.
From the sea, the tender halibut in a delicate champagne citrus beurre blanc over sautéed spinach is a light and flavorful selection. And the savory traditional boeuf bourguignon, a red wine and garlic beef stew, with sautéed vegetables, fingerling potatoes, mushrooms, and lardons is tender and succulent. No knife necessary.
The sparkling water served here is San Benedetto. There is a variety of interesting choices for cocktails, and the restaurant offers an impressive wine list, including varietals from France, California, Oregon, New Zealand, Australia, Argentina, and Spain.
Desserts to look out for are the crème brûlée, cleverly crafted with just the perfect ratio of an impossibly crispy, crunchy circumference of a top layer over a shallow several-centimeter creamy base – placing it as the best I've ever had – and the artistically presented French countrystyle Tarte de Pommes à la Mode with thinly sliced layered apples and a real French crust, twisted at the edges.
After such a sublime and sumptuous repast, when it's finally time to bid adieu to Le Bistro and your convivial evening in France – to where you have unwittingly been magically transported – though you might expect to step out onto centuriesold French cobblestones, it's always nice to take an after-dinner stroll down the picturesque and quaint Church Street with its own lovely brick sidewalks. The spell might be temporarily broken, but Vienna's own Church Street, which is quickly becoming a gastronomic destination to go out of your way for, lucky for us, is not far away. So just blink, and you're back in Paris.

A Journey Through Southern Maryland Wineries
by Linda Barrett
Tucked away in the scenic landscapes of Southern Maryland lies a trail of exceptional wineries that beckon wine enthusiasts. From their lush vineyards to charming tasting rooms, Southern Maryland’s wineries are a perfect escape for those looking to sip and savor their way through the region’s two wine trails: the First Landing and Patuxent Wine Trails.
Friday’s Creek
Winery:
A Rustic Retreat
Our first stop was Friday’s Creek Winery, a family-owned gem in Owings, Maryland, located just 25 miles from DC’s Capitol Dome. Nestled on a former tobacco farm, this winery offers a rustic charm that’s hard to resist. The owners converted an old barn into a cozy tasting room where visitors can sample handcrafted wines like their popular Cayuga White and Cabernet Franc in a tranquil ambiance with a view to the Patuxent River. No food available on site, however, you can bring your own picnic.
Not all wineries are open daily. Check their websites for hours.
Cove Point Winery: A Coastal Escape
Just a short drive away is Cove Point Winery, the smallest licensed—and one of the oldest—wineries in Maryland. But don’t let its size fool you—this pintsized winery packs a punch with a diverse wine selection. It is known for its unique fruit wines like their Gingerbread Cookie, Café Mocha, Toasted Caramel, Orange Chocolate Port, Black Forest, White Chocolate Raspberry and many others, and is a must-visit for those with an adventurous palate.

Perigeaux Vineyards & Winery: A Boutique Experience

Their Frenchstyle wines, such as their elegant Cabernet Sauvignon, double gold-winning Riesling and Estate Pinot Gris, reflect the unique terroir of Southern Maryland. Plus, owners John Behun and Mark Flemming claim to be the only Maryland winery producing a Zinfandel. In addition, they are currently working with a local distillery to create a port-style wine. Enjoy their intimate tasting room with its cherry wood bar and friendly staff, visit the grand French-inspired estate home (and event space) or stretch out on the expansive lawn under centuries-old trees. Picnic and pet friendly.

As parents, we all want to set our children up for a lifetime of healthy smiles. But when should you start brushing your child’s teeth? How do I know if my baby is feeding properly? To answer these common concerns, we sat down with Dr. Rishita Jaju, a trusted pediatric dentist in Reston, VA, to get expert advice on how to keep little teeth strong and healthy.
Q: How Early Should Parents Start Brushing Their Children’s Teeth?
Dr. Jaju: You should start brushing as soon as the first tooth appears. Even before that, wiping your baby’s gums with a damp cloth can help them get used to oral care. To make brushing easier, try doing it while your baby is on the changing table. As they get older, make it fun by singing their favorite songs, like Baby Shark, Wheels on the Bus or the ABCs. An electric or battery-operated toothbrush can also help them get comfortable with the bristles’ circular motion near the gumline. The key: keep it playful and consistent so your children develop healthy habits early.
Q: Why Do Doctors Advise Against Pacifier Use, and How Long Should My Child Use One?
Dr. Jaju: Limiting pacifier use helps babies learn selfsoothing skills in the early days. It can also help keep the airway open and assist with varying sleep positions. Pacifiers should be used for short periods and only at specific times, not for extended periods.
Your child should be weaned from the pacifier by 6 months when teeth start erupting and your baby moves from sucking to developing a gnawing motion with their jaw to prepare for teething. Using one longer than six months, jaw shape and changes in Trent position can start occurring,

which can lead to orthodontic concerns and the need for braces or appliances later on. Encourage other selfsoothing methods, like a soft blanket or a calming routine, to make the transition easier.
Q: What Should I Do If My Baby Is Having Feeding Difficulties?
Dr. Jaju: There are myriad of reasons, but parents should watch for three key red flags: 1) persistent pain for mom beyond the first week past age two, 2) noisy feeds with clicking or gulping sounds, and 3) a fussy or frustrated baby during or after nursing. These could indicate a tongue or lip tie. If you notice these signs, consult a pediatric dentist or pediatrician who has specific expertise in infant feeding. A lactation consultant or feeding therapist could also help resolve issues therapeutically. Early intervention can make a big difference in ensuring your baby feeds comfortably.
At Smile Wonders, we provide expert, compassionate care for all aspects of your child’s oral health. From helping parents build good brushing habits to assessing feeding concerns, our team offers personalized, researchbacked solutions. Whether you need routine guidance or specialized care, we’re here to support your family every step of the way.
