A Colorful Career: Artist Janice Donelson
By Linda Barrett
With her sparkling eyes and a Southern penchant for storytelling, an afternoon with artist Janice Donelson was a delight. Surrounded by framed and unframed watercolor paintings and a cluster of furry companions, she channels her passion onto the paper to create beautiful works of art that anyone would be proud to display.
The Beginnings
Donelson was raised in the Nashville area in a family where her mother, father and sister were all artistic, so it only makes sense that she would inherit that talent as well. Some of her earliest artistic memories are of painting and sketching their backyard garden flowers.
Later, as an art major at the University of North Carolina, Donelson honed her skills. “My classes taught me a lot. I especially remember a class in lettering where you had to learn to write and print well. Even now, it affects how I write.”
In her senior year, Donelson stood out as being talented and a professor asked her what she was going to do next. “I said I wanted to go to graduate school, but he told me to just get married to somebody rich and not worry about supporting myself with art.” Remember, this was the 1960s.
“That was the perfect thing to say to motivate me,” she said. “I went directly to the registrar’s office to see what advance studies were available and they recommended the Accademia di Belle Arti
in Rome.” Getting accepted and spending a year there, Donelson was challenged daily to develop her drawing skills and sketched street scenes, models and statues. This experience kindled her passion for pen and ink drawings.
Throughout her career, and now fluent in Italian, Donelson made it a point to return to Italy for a month each year for years. There she would sketch up to three drawings a day of the various buildings and scenes to watercolor. You can see and purchase her works in her currently-at-home gallery.
Talent Meets Opportunity
There is a quote by the Roman philosopher Seneca that reads, “Luck does not exist: there is a moment when talent meets opportunity.” That describes Janice Donelson’s career trajectory perfectly.
After Janice married John Donelson, the couple moved to California where John earned his doctorate degree from Stanford University while Janice studied art and Oriental brush painting. While at Stanford, John became friends with the future economist Arthur Laffer who went on to join President Reagan’s Economic Policy Advisory Board.
Invited by Laffer to various White House events, Janice’s art talents became known and recognized in Washington and she was asked to represent Virginia with art by both the Reagan and Clinton administrations.
All Photos Credit: Linda Barrett
Opportunity didn’t end there. Donelson was shopping in a Florida gift shop when she was approached by a man who had seen her sketching a series of whimsical cartoon frogs and sayings. She discovered he owned the largest gift manufacturing company in the U.S. He commissioned a series of products under the license The Light Touch that included cards, mugs, plates and other gift items that went nationwide. “He had me represented in every truck stop with my Light Touch cards!” she said with a laugh.
At home in Vienna, Virginia, Donelson created Distinctive Paintings and Portraits to illustrate pen and ink drawings of beautiful homes and other buildings for local and nationwide clients. She was also selected by the International Artist publishers as one of five artists selected representing the U.S. in a book. In addition, she produced artwork for 25 cities in the United States for the Paris-based company Yves Delorme to promote their Palais Royal luxury linens.
What Inspires Art
When asked what inspires her to paint, Donelson answered, “Mostly anything in nature or architecture. I have learned to use my imagination to look at something and create a really different view of it. I like to find different structures I can combine with the sky and other natural elements and love to do summer and winter scenes, but I have never limited myself.”
A deep faith plays an influential role in Donelson’s life. “Every morning and evening I journal in a dedication to feeling one with my own creative spirit. I work with affirmations of all kinds.” She even records some of her inspirational messages on Unity of Fairfax’s Thought for the Day message line.
“Every day my life brings changes, and the journey is constantly evolving and bringing new ideas.”
– Janice Donelson
With no plans to retire, Donelson still creates art daily in her favorite watercolors and pen and ink, and teaches art classes locally, including instruction on cruciform and one third/two thirds techniques. She has also published 11 books of her art and poetry that are for sale.
Many of Donelson’s paintings and drawings have been displayed in galleries around the globe. But during the pandemic, numerous galleries closed and her unsold works were returned. Not having a local gallery, she mounted many of her favorites on walls throughout her home and invites interested parties to visit her there to purchase art by appointment. She is currently hunting for a gallery space in the Vienna area where she, along with other artists, can display and sell their works.
What is Donelson most proud of? “Probably being well known as an artist,” she answered. “I never realized I would become an artist at the level I am or dreamed I’d have this talent in art. I feel fortunate to have been able to take my ability and creativity to the max. The flexibility of being able to be an artist and create is most exciting…there’s never a dull moment.” v

Tailored Treatments: Customized Dental Care for Children with Special Needs
MONTH AUTISM ACCEPTANCE
Proper dental care is even more important for children with special physical, medical, developmental, or behavioral conditions, especially since children with special needs are more likely to develop dental problems than children without these issues. They are susceptible to tooth decay, gum disease, or oral trauma, or may have physical difficulty with good dental habits. Medications or diets can also be detrimental to oral health.
A pediatric dentist and their team are specially trained to work with children with special needs and can develop a treatment plan to provide the best dental care. Your child may need extra time to adapt to a new environment, require simple explanations of procedures, or a calming atmosphere. The dentist may even suggest mild forms of sedation. You collaborate closely with your dentist to decide what is best for your child.
Types of Special Needs
● Visual or auditory impairment
● Developmental disability or delay
● Behavioral or mental health issues
● Emotional disability
● Intellectual disability
● Autism spectrum disorder
● Orthopedic or physical impairment
● Multiple disabilities
Specialized Adaptations
A special needs pediatric dentist can provide adaptations designed to provide dental care beyond routine. Some of
these customized accommodations can include:
● A schedule that benefits children who require a familiar routine, with appointments scheduled in the same room, at the same time, with the same dental assistant on each visit
● An initial “meet and greet” desensitization appointment
● Wheelchair accessible spaces
● Quiet room visits to aid with relaxation
● Split or elongated visits to reduce anxiety
● Mid-morning appointments for children who need to clear morning airway congestion
● Sedation dentistry options
● Specialized equipment for children who cannot stand or sit motionless
● Experience with patients with craniofacial anomalies
● Collaboration with other special needs providers
National Autism Acceptance Month
Children diagnosed with autism can struggle with communication, connections, and engagement with others, and can feel rejected as a result. They may find it difficult to understand what others are feeling or thinking, become anxious in social situations, or have trouble making friends. They often prefer to be on their own.
During Autism Acceptance Month, individuals are encouraged to use their voice and platforms to spread the message of awareness, inclusion, and connections to both one another and support services. Social and community support can help those with autism spectrum disorders reach their full potential and achieve optimal health.
Smile Wonders offers experience and passion in providing collaborative and comprehensive oral health care for patients with special needs, and those with craniofacial anomalies such as Clef Lip and Palate, Cerebral Palsy, Autism Spectrum Disorders, ADHD, Down Syndrome, Neural Tube defects, Epilepsy, traumatic brain injury and various other congenital conditions.

through the meticulously preserved rooms, each offering a unique glimpse into George Washington’s private and public life.
Note the spacious dining room where Washington entertained and conducted important discussions about our nation’s future. Explore his private study where he penned letters shaping the course of American history. And see the bedroom and bed where he spent his last hours. Rooms throughout mansion feature original objects, period pieces and reproductions. Your guide will share fascinating anecdotes and facts that bring the mansion to life, like the framed key to the Bastille given to Washington by the Marquis de Lafayette. (Note: The New Room is not on view currently due to mansion revitalization. Reopening August 2024.)
After your tour, take a moment to relax on the expansive porch overlooking the milewide Potomac River. Washington claimed that Mount Vernon was the “Most pleasantly situated house in the United States.” You may agree.
The Grounds
throughout the years, including Thomas Edison, King Edward VII and President James Buchanan.
Farm: A four-acre farm represents the more than 3,000 acres Washington cultivated. From April to October, watch costumed interpreters demonstrate the various activities that took place daily, like hoeing, cooking over the fire, shearing and harvesting. The 16-sided exact replica barn was innovated by Washington for treading wheat—his most important cash crop.
Tombs: Honor our founding father by participating in a daily wreath-laying ceremony at George and Martha Washington’s Tomb.
5 Best Things to Do at Mount Vernon
1. Tour the mansion
Exploring the expansive grounds is another highlight. Be sure to visit the beautifully landscaped gardens and the numerous outbuildings such as the kitchen, slave quarters, spinning house and blacksmith shop. These areas offer insight into the domestic and working aspects of the estate during Washington’s time, providing a more comprehensive view of colonial life.
Slave Cemetery: Don’t miss the cemetery commemorating the lives of the free and enslaved individuals who lived and died at Mount Vernon. A total of 70 graves have been located in the sacred woods and outlined with rope boundaries along with a stone memorial.
2. Explore the grounds, outbuildings and burial grounds
3. Engage with interpreters
4. Take a scenic boat cruise
5. Visit the educational exhibits and museum
Outbuildings: In 1799, more than 50 enslaved men and women were trained in specific trades, using their skills to care for livestock, process food, make tools and textiles, and construct and repair the buildings including the mansion itself. Feel free to interact with the costumed interpreters you may find at several sites.
Gardens: The four gardens each served a different purpose essential to the estate. The Upper Garden, or formal garden and greenhouse, showcases Washington’s gardening skill for guests. The Lower Garden and Fruit Garden provided vegetables and fruits year round. The Botanical Garden allowed Washington to experiment Some of the historic trees around the grounds were planted during George Washington’s time and by notable visitors
Costumed Interpreters
Imagine our thrill when Martha Washington herself strolled by! Depending on when you visit, you can meet and speak with the first family and others who lived and worked on the estate. On our visit, we chatted with interpreters at several locations including those portraying Ona Judge, the personal maid to Mrs. Washington and Christopher Shields, Mr. Washington’s valet and waiter who described their daily chores and answered questions.
Museum and Education Center
Explore 23 galleries and theatres to learn about George Washington’s life and Mount Vernon’s enslaved community. You’ll see hundreds of artifacts from Washington’s lifetime—including his “wooden teeth”—movies, a 4D theatre, and an interactive theatre. Children ages 3-10 can enjoy the Discovery Center filled with books, costumes and themed activities. (From July 8, 2024 through 2025, the Education Center exhibit on George Washington’s life will be off display for an extensive rebuild.)
Onsite Dining & Gift Shop
Pop into the Mount Vernon Food Court Pavilion for breakfast, lunch or snacks on the go, or savor the flavors of early America at the full-service Mount Vernon Inn Restaurant for sandwiches, full entrees or dessert. Weekend brunch is also available. Admission is not required to dine here, but you may want to make a reservation. And don’t forget to take home a souvenir from the inviting gift shop!
River Tours
A scenic boat cruise along the Potomac River provides a unique perspective of Mount Vernon from the water, complementing the on-land experience.

The Virginian Fairfax
Set in the energetic city of Fairfax, VA, The Virginian sits on 32.7 acres along Accotink Creek, an oasis of nature in urban Northern Virginia. Shopping, museums, and restaurants are just minutes away and The Virginian’s convenient location offers quick access to the Washington, DC area. The campus includes apartments and amenities for independent retirement living, as well as complete options for higher levels of care if needed — all under one roof. For every incoming Assisted Living and Memory Care resident, The Virginian holds a roundtable meeting that includes the resident, the resident’s family, the Executive Director, and department heads. The Kensington Falls Church
The Kensington’s enhanced program of exceptional care makes it possible for residents to continue living here, even if assisted living health care needs change or increase. The Kensington offers assistance that includes a full spectrum of clinical support – beyond what many traditional assisted living communities offer. Allowing all of our residents to “age in place.” They will not have to move out if assisted living health care needs change or increase.
To create the best conditions for this “relationship-based” focus, we assign a primary care manager to each resident. The consistent attention of one individual keeps the continuum of familiarity intact. It also preserves meaningful routines for residents.
Ultimately, the bond between residents, the residents’ families, their care manager, and the entire team deepens – making the care experience more natural, pleasant, and dignified, easing the potential stress of senior care.

Missy Whittington
Fastest Growing Agent
Missy Whittington has lived in Vienna for 50+ years and is trusted and respected within the community. She attributes TRUST as the number one reason for her success saying, “when you hire a realtor to take on the sale of your home or to purchase a new one, you have to trust that this person will get you to settlement in a timely manner without drama and will continue to serve the client well after the transaction has closed.”

Capstone Vineyards

Crimson Lane Vineyards
13334 Crimson Lane, Linden, VA 22642 crimsonlanevineyards.com

Together, he and his wife Deanna—she herself came from a family background of winemaking practices—opened Crimson Lane Vineyards in 2023. 21 and up restrictions.
Tom’s brother-in-law, Dominick Fioresi, grew up in a lively Italian family that made homemade wine, and became the winemaker at Crimson Lane. Wines here are created by hand—old school style—because they believe the closer they are to each step of the winemaking process, the more they can preserve the product’s integrity.

Domaine Fortier Vineyards is a boutique winery opened by Dr. Stephen Fortier and Jennifer Volk-Fortier focused on small lot, hand-crafted, high-quality wines. Register in advance for a discount on your wine tasting.
Everleigh Vineyards & Brewing Company

Kalero Vineyard
36140 Charles Town Pike, Purcellville, VA 20132 kalerovineyard.com
Set on a 130-acre farm, the heart of Kalero Vineyard is its historic 2,400 square foot 1834era Heartstone Barn, named for a heart-shaped stone found on the property by the owners’ twin daughters. Fully restored with an extensive renovation to serve as both a tasting room and an event space, Kalero Vineyard is positioned as a wedding destination.
Kalero offers tastings of its 14 varietals—but only on Fridays from 1 PM to 7 PM, Sundays 1 PM to 5 PM or by appointment (tasting room could be closed for private events); 21 and older restrictions. Come enjoy their monthly brunch.

Located on Lake Manassas in Gainesville, guests can enjoy wine, beer, cider and seltzer, along with food trucks and live music on the weekends. The winery features the lodge-style tasting room, an upstairs gallery with lake views, an outdoor pergola with its large wraparound porch, and the lawn with its lake breezes. Age 16 and up restrictions/no infants. No cash on site; credit card payments only. Interior reservations recommended/2 hour limit.
