The Lake District has attracted more literary and political figures than you can shake a stick at. Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Robert Southey and John Ruskin managed to combine both interests. Then there was Hugh Walpole, Arthur Rankin (Swallows and Amazons), Thomas de Quincey (Confessions of an English Opium Eater) and, of course, William himself and Beatrix. One thing you can be certain of is that anywhere which attracts such an abundance of creativity has to be special. It also follows that special places remain special and the intervening years don’t alter that. And the Lakes are special for vegetarians and vegans. There are many vegetarian and veganfriendly places dotted all over the place, most of them characterful, all of them welcoming. So, exploring this unique corner of the UK is as civilised and satisfying as it is exciting. In some ways it’s wrong to refer to them simply as ‘the Lakes’, as though it was all the same homogeneous, identikit geography. Truth is, the scenery can change as suddenly and dramatically as the weather. There are sombre, soaring heights where not even a bush can survive; jumbled and mossy crags where stunted juniper trees huddle; bleak scree slopes with their reminder that nature isn’t entirely benign; coastal plains and deep verdant valleys. And it’s possible to visit them all in the same day in a schizophrenic whirl through wonderland if that’s your fancy.

And, of course, there are the lakes themselves – tiny and tree fringed, vast and rock strewn; furrowed by pleasure steamers or dimpled by trout; teeming with visitors or high, tranquil and remote. But once you’ve found your dream, take time to explore it. For some, Lakes visiting is an endurance test – hikes up impossibly steep fells with muscles aching and lungs bursting. But the reward…! Either a coronary or a view so majestic, so silent, so awe inspiring that it takes away any breath you have left. But me, I’m a low level walker with a passion for the more gentle, wooded slopes of Esthwaite Water, Lake Windermere, Rydal Water and Grasmere – where badgers abound, where surprised red deer look at you haughtily and where the bark of foxes proclaims a right far older than that of the morons who hunt them. Everyone has their most favourite place and mine is Wordsworth’s Grasmere. And if, like me, you choose to return year after year, familiarity does not diminish its appeal. If anything, it fits snugly around you, warm and reassuring whilst worries simply melt away. This, on its own would be reason enough to visit but add to this special place a selection of vegetarian country house hotels, B&Bs and cafés and a host of other places who understand these diets, and the desire to walk with the greats becomes compelling.

Vegetarian Guide to the Lake District

About Viva! – Publisher of the Vegetarian Guide to the Lake District Viva! works tirelessly to save animals from suffering. Proud because meat eating in the UK is falling and we are happy to take some of the credit. The VVF is a unique charity – it exposes how animal products cause disease and why plant foods are the key to health. And it does it with hard science! Its controversial campaigns are influencing the public and health professionals and charting the way to a healthier, kinder future. Funded by public donations, we need your help to continue our fight for life! We’ve shown how animal products are a major cause of obesity, breast cancer, heart disease and how dairy is linked to many serious illnesses. The VVF are utterly unafraid to trample over official nostrums and provide a mass of superbly produced and easy-toread information to help people change their diet, improve their health and reduce their impact on the globe.
