Singapore Supreme Court. Project Context Singapore Supreme Court by Norman Foster is situated at the civic centre , within the Colonial District, and having the old Supreme Court, City Hall and Parliament House as its neighbouring context. It is designed in response to a rapidly growing population of Singapore. The building takes its cue from the scale of the neighbouring civic buildings while offering a modern reinterpretation of their colonial vernacular to convey an image of dignity, transparency and openness.

Design Strategies The building is argued as a modern reinterpretation of the colonial vernacular but in a way trying to convey an image of transparency and openness. As mentioned by Foster himself, “all his buildings have a high level of interconnectivity where they are always cross-referencing with each other, and taking each other as part of the precedence.

Project Analysis As a new translation of a civic building, it has to response to the limited space qualities and facilities of the Old Supreme Court. It erects and grows vertically in such constrained city centre and promotes the idea of transparency which has not been done in the Old Supreme Court.

Public Beacon As a stronger element to communicate the idea of transparency, openness and familiarity to the public, the building has to provide a welcoming presence, especially at night, when it is literally a beacon.
